Easy ROSELLA JAM0 (Dulcie Edwards)
Shell Rosellas and separate shells from seeds. Cover seeds with a little water; peel one (1) Apple and put skins and core in with seeds. Boil for about 10 minutes and then strain thoroughly. Cut apple very finely and add to strained juice. Cook for about 5 to 10 minutes with the lid on. Add Rosella shells and cook until tender; then add sugar: 1 cup Sugar to 1 cup Fruit. Cook until it comes to a rolling boil. Boil for 15-20 minutes, stirring often to prevent sticking. (While boiling, skim off any froth which forms on top.) To test for correct jelling, spoon a little onto a cold saucer and let cool for 2 – 3 minutes. Push with spoon and if surface wrinkles and can be moved in a lump, it’s ready for bottling. Bottle while hot/warm and leave lid off until totally cold. Dulcie Edwards was an older lady who lived locally for many years. She was affectionately known as “Nanna”, being the grandmother of the 4 Mears kids, mother of Bernard (Mears) and mum-in-law of Susan. Dulcie was a country girl born and bred (in Mackay on a dairy farm) and was a great cook, gardener, and crocheter, knitter, et al – supreme. She made THE BEST Rosella Jam of anyone and made numerous batches each year which were swiftly procured for all around the district. Nanna has since passed while well into her 80s but she left this recipe with me for posterity…Enjoy...........& Good Luck!! P2

We are lucky to have the services of Narelle providing 1 on 1 computer training on Tuesdays. Narelle has generously cleared a 2-hour period each Tuesday to work with people needing IT assistance. This service has been made available through Broadband for Seniors. Bookings are essential. At the moment we are able to book appointments for up to an hour per learner. In August we will be holding our 2nd Art Expo and Painting Competition. See the advertisement below. This year’s theme is “Pineapples” with the view to asking permission of artists if the work can be reproduced as a poster or other form to sell at this year’s Pineapple Festival. There are still a few wrinkles to be ironed out about this idea – and all views on the idea would be appreciated. Suicide intervention training is being held on 9 May hosted by CORES P/L. This is free course and a must for every. Not a pleasant topic we know, BUT there are not many who can say their lives have not been affected by suicide. To have some reliable tools in you tool kit is better than saying, “I didn’t know what to do?” Please make an effort to come along to the course; booking is a must. The information session hosted by Mark Hargreaves was well attended and those present gained much useful information. I saw many heads nodding (not the ‘Z’ nodding of afternoon nappers) in acknowledgement of the information being presented and provided food for thought for future planning. Thank you Mark for your time coming to our part of paradise and for your expertise on this topic. How to prepare for Tropical Storms and Cyclones brochures are available from the Community Centre. After the near miss of TC Debbie we have restocked. To all Mothers, new Mums, Grandies, – have a lovely day doing anything and everything you want to do. As always – take care……..Chris

Sadly, we lost Veronica May (nee Wegert) during April. Vonny was originally diagnosed with Breast Cancer 16 years ago but was able to enjoy her children and grandchildren for all those years of remission. She was a committed and loving mother and grandma and her family will miss her. Vale Vonny. April also saw the passing of Les Dallow who was the partner of Letitia McDonald and the brother of Joan Ruddick. Les had not been well and will now no longer be hurting, but will be sadly missed by his local family.. Vale Les Madonna Reinke, Sue Young and Bob Holt have not been well at all and need our very best wishes, prayers and support to help get them “up-and-at-‘em” again. To anyone who’s doing it tough and of whom we’re not aware, please get well soon. On a more pleasant note, Gary Luff and his partner, Koy Pirroon, were married on April 29th at the Landing. Such a happy occasion with all present wishing them a wonderful life together.

We’ve welcomed Narelle Shiell to the Community Association Management Committee. This is great news and brings us back to our regular 6 members. However, if there is a male in the community who’d like to join us, we’d welcome another man with open arms. Well, the third Lone Pine Seedling we’ve tried to establish has died. I don’t think we’ll try again. It was to recognise 100 years of WWI and the sacrifice made by so many but it hasn’t worked. We’ll have to think of something else. Recently noticed that a new building (house?) has been built on the exact spot of the old Community Hall on the block opposite the Pub! Many happy memories in the old Hall. Let’s hope that happiness transfers to the new home. Once again, a busy month just gone by and another on the way. We’ve put and are putting a lot of activities in place for 2017 which we hope will be approved and appreciated. Please keep an eye on the RAG, the notice boards, and social media. Otherwise, it’s business as usual with much to be done.

Combine the avocado, onion, cilantro, lime juice, and salt in a bowl and mix well, chill until ready to use. Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

BOWEL CANCER AWARNESS
Bowel Cancer – Also known as colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia. BOWEL CANCERS begin as polyps. Polyps are growths occurring in the lining of the bowel. Not all polyps are cancerous; they may or may not bleed and cause diarrhoea and pain. Because polyps can develop into cancer, early diagnosis and removal of all polyps is important. More than 75% of people who develop bowel cancer do not have a family history of the disease. Bowel Cancer Facts 1 in 13 (14 962) Australians are told they have bowel cancer each year including 1313 people under the age of 50 Bowel Cancer claims the lives of 4071 Australians every year including 213 people under the age of 50 55% of people diagnosed with bowel cancer are Male and 45% are Female Bowel Cancer risk increases with age. Screening from age 50 every 1-2 years could save your life For around 25% of all bowel cancer cases there is a family history or hereditary contribution 90% of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully if found early. Fewer than 40% are detected. Bowel Symptoms Blood in the bowel movement Unexplained weight loss Persistent change in the bowel habit Severe abdominal pain
High Risk
The risk of bowel cancer increases 3 to 4 times the average if: - One or more of your blood relatives (parent, sibling or child) have had bowel cancer or polyps. - You’ve previously had bowel cancer or polyps. - You’ve had extensive inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis).- You have a history of bleeding with or in the stool. - You have experienced a recent change in bowel habit or pain in the lower abdomen. Persons in any of the above categories should consult their doctor for follow up investigation. Note: Many bowel cancers also occur in people without high risk factors. Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. Another relatively quiet month has passed since my last communiqué. The Club End of Month BBQ, the first Balgal Beach Markets for 2017, the Closed Club Barra Competition were but a few of the events on our Calendar of Social Events. However, of these events, some did not come to fruition. The Club’s end of month BBQ held on Friday 31st. March was well attended but the number of Members attending were down. Don’t forget this is a FREE BBQ for Members and only $15.00 per adult for guests or visitors. School age children accompanied by an adult are free. So make an effort to attend as your Committee and other Club Members put a lot of effort into staging this once a month social event. The BBQ Team did another excellent job and we thank them most sincerely for their effort in putting on another first class event. Col Pace’s rissoles seem to be getting better each month so keep up the good work Col. President Di presented a cheque on behalf of the Club for $1,000 to the Ingham Coast Guard and thanked them for watching over us whilst we are “out there”. Rex representing the Ingham Coast Guard thanked all Club Members for the generous donation and assured us the money would be put to good use as they receive little government funding. The winners of the Club Monthly Fishing Competition were: Senior, Richard Pratt who was most excited about finally winning something: Junior, Jack Jones and the Mystery prize was jagged by an extremely lucky and cheeky Sloane Palmer who fought off some stiff opposition to finally snatch the prize. The raffle was won by Robert Pratt but it quickly disappeared into Kirsty’s purse “for safe keeping”. Congratulations all. The first Balgal Beach Markets scheduled for 1 April was cancelled after a lot of soul searching by the Executive Committee. The long range forecast for the day was for windy and foul weather and as we have to let stall holders know of any cancellations well in advance of the event so they can attend an alternative venue, we took the weather man’s forecast into consideration and cancelled. However, as we all now know, it turned out to be a beautiful day. Another consideration was the feedback we were getting was that people would rather spend their Saturday putting their yards and houses back in order after the practice preparation pack up for TC Debbie. So, the first Market for the year will now be on Saturday 6 May. Please mark that date on your social calendar. For The first Market Day only, we are offering FREE, yes Cyril, FREE stall sites and this year there is no restriction on what you may sell in your stall but the Fishing Club reserves the sole right to conduct any raffles. Most importantly, stall holders must have their own insurance. Sorry, no insurance, no setup. We do need a variety of stalls particularly fruit and vegetables. Come on down to The Landing for a great social gathering, grab a bite to eat and for Mon’s great coffee and there may even be something there for that last minute Mothers’ Day gift like a second hand mower or fishing gear but sorry, no electrical items like jugs, toasters or irons.. Members will recall so far this year we have run not one but two (2) Closed Club Barra Fishing Competitions with great prizes offered. Despite heaps of Club Members nominating; not one singular, solitary, solo, nuffin Barra was caught. The great prizes still sit in the garage taking up valuable space so the Club Fishing Events Coordinator will, I am certain, soon release details of another competition but I am willing to bet it will not be a Barra Competition. We know when we are beaten. As I pen this piece of literary whateveryouwannacallit, President Di and I are resting in a very nice comfortable caravan park in Normanton after a brief visit to Karumba. No, we didn’t fish but had some nice prawns. We are taking a well earned break from Fishing Club duties but don’t panic Cyril, we will be back in time to organize the end of month BBQ, ANZAC Day and release details of the Closed Club Fun Family Weekend Away in May, - once we work them out! You may have noticed that the wildlife on or within cooee of the golf course now wear protective clothing including steel hats on Wednesday mornings. This is because Graham and Dickie have taken up the sport again after a few months break. I hear the air is blue, clubs fly each which way and golf balls buzz through the scrub like zinging bullets. It seems the only safe place is in the middle of the fairway. Have fun fellas and remember you are doing it for the enjoyment. Past President Garry Luff and his longtime Partner Koy were married at The Landing on Saturday 29 April attended by a number of Club Members. We wish Garry and Koy all the very best for their future together. So far this month no Club Member has been reported on the sick list which is very pleasing as it is good to know that we run a happy, fit, healthy Club. Keep up the good work. The Club Committee and all Members wish all you Mums and soon to be Mums a happy care free Mothers’ Day when you will be treated like a queen or a goddess, waited on hand and foot all day but don’t forget come Monday morning everything is back to normal so make sure you make the best of your special day and lap it up big time. Now to finish the article this month on a serious note, don’t drink while driving as you may hit a bump and spill some. Until next month,………….Ninger
OP SHOP NEWS Hi All and welcome to May already. The months just seem to be slipping by very rapidly. It just seems like yesterday that I wrote the last Op Shop News article and now Kerrie in the Rolly Rag office is nagging me again for this months words. Well this month has been very busy and the lovely ladies who volunteer their time here in our Centre are run off their feet. I would like to thank our lovely ladies for the great job that they do here in the Op Shop and I would also like to thank everyone in our community for their kind donations. We have lots of good quality clothes and goodies here in the Op Shop at the moment so come on down and browse a bit and you might find something that you want. Mothers Day is on the 14th May, maybe you might find something for your mum as well. The Op Shop will be closed on Monday May 1st for the Queens Birthday Holiday-but will be opening on Tuesday 2nd. Congratulations to Cheryl from the Fulham Road Fish Bar on winning our Easter Hamper. Cheryl was absolutely delighted when I rang and told her she had won the raffle. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets in the raffle. Or current raffle is the Mothers Day Raffle. $1 per ticket or 6 for $5. 1st Prize: Mothers Pamper Hamper…………...2nd Prize: Box of Chocolates.……......3rd Prize: Bottle of Wine. Good Luck everyone! Breaky & Bowls - Sunday 7th May Cost is $12. Any one interested in getting a team together and go to the Mystic Sands Bowls Club? If we can get enough people together we would consider hiring the bus to take everyone for some fun. On Tuesday 23rd May a few of us are going to the Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea at the Rollingstone Community Hall 9.30am. There will be a cent sale, prize for the best decorated Bra and some home grown entertainment. Please contact me if you would like a lift down there on the day. Saturday June 24th we are having a Garage Sale / Car Boot Sale at Toomulla Park 11am - 2pm. If you would like to have a Stall / Car Boot site it will only cost you $10. The community association will have items for sale that have been kindly donated. There will also be a Sausage Sizzle and drinks for sale. Please contact Rhonda for any further info - 47707813 or schwarzee1959@gmail.com Well there were 6 of us that went along to the luncheon at the Tafe College on Tuesday. The food was very delicious, the staff were just so helpful and friendly and we had lots of fun. The price was right ….$20 for an Entree & Main meal! It is wonderful to see young people learning a trade. We are going along again on Tuesday 9th May, so if you would like to come along please contact me on the above details as we have to book numbers for the table. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. There have been a few snakes seen, caught and relocated around Toomulla lately, so please be on the lookout. One very, very large scrub python ate a resident’s cat, could also be the same snake that ate one of Betty’s chooks! Hungry snake, but he was happily relocated out to the bush, a couple of tree snakes and even a children’s python. Nothing venomous luckily. Garden Mulch anyone? There were some trees fallen down in Rouse Harvey Park, a contractor was sent out by the council to cut the trees up and they have dropped off the mulch, so please feel free to take what you want. There’s plenty of it!! Resident George Duvel has not been well for a few weeks now, he has been in & out of hospital. We are hoping that you are feeling better soon George. Happy Birthday to those who celebrate in May, have a lovely day. …………….Cheers…...Rhonda P.S. Safety hint of the month: Remember to take your ride on mower out of gear before starting it up!

ACNE Are you at RISK? Acne affects at least 85% of people at some stage through their life, most common between 15-25 years. 95-100% of males between 16-19years will suffer acne and 8385% of females between 14-17years.10-20% of these may continue to experience through adulthood. (myvmc). During adolescent’s androgen, sebum and growth hormone levels peak. Increasing sebum production and abnormal keratinisation, this leads to follicles becoming blocked because of excess sebum and dead skin cells. The bacteria growing in the blocked pores then lead to redness, swelling and pus-filled bumps, known as pimples. (hechtman,2012,p.660). Most common on face, neck, chest and upper back. In mild cases lesions maybe open comedones-blackheads, closed comedones – whiteheads and papules. More severe cases develop inflamed papules, pustules, nodules and cysts which often lead to scarring. Scarring can often lead to depression and low self- esteem. (hechtman,2012,p.660). Wholefood diet can help to create healthier skin and immune function as well as regulate hormonal balance and inflammation. Vegetables, fruits and wholegrains help reduce outbreaks. Wholegrains, nuts and seeds give antioxidant protections and skin healing. Oily fish helps reduce inflammation. Eating a low GI diet opposed to a high GI as it promotes insulin resistance and increases androgens thus increasing sebum leading to acne. (Tuck,2013). R.S.L. NEWS Rather difficult writing this as the article is due before ANZAC Day, and of course that is what should feature in the May Rolly Rag. However, here’s hoping the weather was kind and we had a lovely cool, fresh morning, with a beautiful sunrise as we stood looking out to sea at Balgal Beach. A slight breeze gracefully moved the palm fronds as we listened to our guest speaker and contemplated that morning 102 years ago when those brave, young ANZACs stormed the beach at Gallipoli. Many didn’t make it to the shore and the others were like sitting ducks as they crossed the beach and tried to seek shelter on the hillsides. Following the service, patrons gathered, sometimes meeting those whom they meet regularly each year at this same location. A beer and a chat about the past to catch up. Others enjoyed the lovely breakfast cooked by the Lions and found a place to sit or stand and chat to each other. Later in the day, the community joined in and people marched, proudly wearing the uniform of their unit, group or service club. Little legs did overtime to keep up as ex-service personnel proudly displayed their medals as they marched along The Esplanade. Following the march a second service was conducted in the park. Again we had guest speakers and the most important part, the playing of the Last Post and Rouse. Flags were lowered and people bowed their heads respectfully, remembering the fallen who didn’t make it home and the wounded who returned with many physical and emotional scars. We also remember the other conflicts that have occurred since that war and our thoughts turn to those who are currently serving overseas, assisting with training or peace-keeping. Thank you to all of those who attended the day, either for one of the services or for both. Your presence makes it all worthwhile. Numerous thanks need to go to so many who make this day possible. Firstly to all of our sponsors- Pace Farming for eggs and ice, Blancos for sausages, Tip Top Bakery for bread and Pauls Milk for the obvious. Please support those businesses if you can as they have been terrific sponsors for a number of years and enable us to keep the cost of the breakfast to a very reasonable amount. A big thank you to the Rollingstone Lions and Leos for cooking and serving the breakfasts. Our Catafalque Party from 9 TPT SQN have become ANZAC Day regulars and we are proud of establishing a close relationship with such a great unit. Thank you to our guest speaker, LT Sarah Wilson , who made a memorable speech to remind us of the significance of the day. Thanks to Councillor Margie Ryder for her moving talk and being there to represent the council. The school students, again represented their schools admirably. Phoebe from Rollingstone recited “In Flanders Field” and Cody from Mutarnee also recited a poem. Thanks to those who keep us safe on these days. This includes “Goughy” and Sean from the Rollingstone Police, the Ambulance and also the SES. Rob Wilson gathers his small group and they are there from the early hours ensuring everyone knows where to go. Of course we can’t forget our MC, John Muller, who delayed going to New Zealand for a conference as he is so dedicated to this day at Rollingstone. These things don’t happen without other support. RADCA allow us use of the cold room and chairs and tables; Rosco allows storage of the milk, and then comes the Rollingstone RSL committee. President Ewan, Jan, Dowie, Tony G (M5), Rob T and Dave C, have all assisted with the running of the day, whether it be setting up, taking down, collecting items or handing out items. RSL members who are always there to assist in loading, setting up and taking down are Mick C, Ashley F, Jamo and Greg, and we also welcome new member Tony A who has joined this band of reliables. Our bar attendants Doug and Des take their role very seriously and ensure we continue the tradition of rum and milk in the early hours followed by the Aussie specialty-beer. Thank you Doug and Des. A special thank you to newcomers to our area, Mick and Lisa, who assisted with the work at the park and to Theresa, who loves running and volunteered to deliver the letters to residents. Wow- did she go! I would have taken a lot longer by myself. Volunteers, spur of the moment, or in there for years are very much a part of the Australian way of life. Thanks to Nina at school for assisting with programs and certificates. She is so clever. There I was imagining going through all of these USB sticks and bingo Nina helped me. School principals Kacey C and Michael B, for encouraging their student’s participation on such a special day. Back at the club where we go to complete the day’s activities and enjoy some nibblies and refreshments, we need to thank Emma, Theresa and Kris for their preparation and service. I’m sorry to anyone whom I have missed. I shall try and catch up in the June Rolly Rag, I’ll leave the report on Two-up for then and let you know who won all of the money. A wonderful day again and thank you to all of the Rollingstone and surrounding districts for your support. Remember we are there on Friday nights at Mystic Sands Golf Resort with our raffles and Goose Club. Come on over, try your luck and enjoy dinner. We do have fun and it’s a great way to start the weekend. Cheers, Rhonda.

All had a good time lots of laughing and rivalry. Team 5 won the game and were given the GOLD PRIZE. We had three visiting kids playing they all got GOLD and were really excited. The LOUNDS FRESH SEAFOOD RAFFLE was won by Kathy Thatcher. Congratulations; it’s a great prize. Fish of the month went to Tom Ruddick with a 60cm Grunter. The lucky length did not go off. Dinner was a hot dog night with lots of extras and was yummy as ALWAYS. Thanks to the cooks and ladies, your sweets were a delight. WELL DONE GIRLS. It has been decided to have a club outing to the Harvey Range Tea Rooms for breakfast in the near future. Seems we have a lot of interest. We are all looking forward to going. Something different, should be fun. Some of our members have been travelling to that faraway land of the Long White Cloud. All have returned safe after a great holiday and lots to talk about. Rollingstone SES Hi everyone hope the month has keep you well as it's been a busy month for your local emergency services. We are very lucky the cyclone didn't come here. 3 SES (Rob Joe & Jeni) & 2 RFS (Paul & Matt) crew went on deployment to Proserpine for clean up & assisting people who needed help. We did a 5 day deployment and we were looked after by Qld urban & rescue who set up a habitat for us to live in & lions club & Salvation Army kept us fed & watered. We were the first deployment from Northern region to enter the disaster zone. It was a mess. We did what we could in our time there which consisted of tarping roofs, chainsaw up huge logs so people could have access to there driveways. I had an awesome experience & learnt a lot. We met a lot of emergency service people from all over the northern region and our base was at Proserpine SES and we were sent all over the region to help. Our crew worked out of Hydeaway Bay and our crew was made up of Townsville & Rollingstone. We had a picture taken with the deputy commissioner and he came to thank all of us for putting our lives on hold to help out in the Cyclone Debbie emergency …..That's just what we do….. And for some good news…...We have just received a new generator & will be receiving new emergency lighting in the not too distant future…. until next month stay safe…. Yes...we had 3 flat tyres on our Cheers….Jeni Maxwell trailer...Now we have new ones.
Hello Golfers, Well it has been a long time coming to get myself into gear and post some scores for the past couple of months, things have been happening to stall me. So here we go. The opening day was very successful and a lot of fun was had by all. The first monthly medal was held on 4/3/17 and the results are as follows Div 1 Ashley Foster with 66 that would be worth a celebration drink good on you Ash R/U Bob Lloyd with 72 good honest golf well done Bob Div 2 Eddie White with 81 it was hard going well done Ed R/U Peter Simpson with 84 another hard going day well done Pete Ladies Scores Winner Megan Jeffree with 77 nice one Meg, congratulations R/U Pam McCarthy with 83 another hard day at the office mate. Then we come to April’s results Div 1 Gary Smylie with 76 well done Gary. The going was a bit hard R/U Wayne McCarthy with 77 just a couple of shots less and you would have had the daily double R/U Bob Lloyd with 75 what’s going on Bob Ladies Scores Winner Pam McCarthy with 79 hard going but it was worth it well done Pam
R/U Maree King with 81 I tried and I tried and I got tired. On the 22 April we held the RADCA Golf day and the people that did participate had a fun day and it was won by none other than yours truly and her partner Grahame Starkie with 67.75 wasn't that a surprise. I would like to thank Sue Von Wald and RADCA for sponsoring the day. Now for my moan…… Firstly, I have noticed that the ladies red tee box area is suffering a lot of divots that are not filled with sand. We have buckets at the 1st tee box, it’s not much fun if your ball lands in a divot, so I say lets all be considerate with one another and it helps the ground staff out. I would like to see more club members playing as our little club needs all the help it can get and if there are any newcomers to our beautiful area please come to the club and the bar staff will serve you with good food and the odd glass of ale. Not too much though. Lastly and this is not a moan I would like to thank the volunteers who put hours into working at the course because without them the course would be very unhappy, so thanks to Tony Cochrane and Tony Alcorn for your time and sweat…..HOORAY TO YOU BOTH!!!!!! I wont be here next month as Grahame and myself are taking off for a holiday its a bit of a bucket list time for us both. Cheers for now and good golfing Look after one another and stay safe Maree K.

Les Hyland PDCA AGM The PDCA held its AGM, as always, on Easter Saturday in the Community Hall. The President’s Report in this issue covers the events of the past year in some detail. The election of officers brought only two changes in the Vice Presidents. The new Executive Committee for the PDCA is: President ….Lynn Hyland………...Secretary….Michael Drew 1st Vice President………....Wilfred Karnoll Treasurer….John Tubman 2ndVice… President….Jamie Oliver Some of the Points arising in Lynn’s President’s Report were; 1.….The refurbishment of the McClelland Lookout Picnic Grounds has recently seen the installation of a new dual gas BBQ in the new shelter shed and the old BBQ repaired and moved to the large shed. Water has been connected to the sheds and to a hand basin at the toilets. The old paving has been replaced with hard stand matting in a number of areas. The next phase will be focussed on the gazetting of the Lake Paluma area tracks and their signage. Our main event for the year was the official opening of the Andree Griffin Memorial Track and the unveiling of the Pioneers Memorial Stone in the “Trees In Memory” grove and the Honour Board at the hall. 2…..The PDCA ran a very successful Art Exhibition and came out on the positive side financially after prize money and costs were taken into account. Bunnings once again kindly sponsored to the value of $200 the Paluma Garden Competition and have indicated that they will do so again in 2017. Markets were held at Easter, May and Oct. with our usual Sausage Sizzle available. Helpers are needed as the older generation are “ getting older.” 3…..Early 2016 TCC elections, saw Cr. Margie Ryder elected as our area Councillor. The PDCA executive met with her in May’16 to provide her with an oral and written profile of our community, its assets and current and outstanding issues with council. We have had some success stories with TCC, namely, a new septic system at the Village Green toilets, the clearing back of roadside vegetation between the village and Dam Rd. turnoff, the resealing of all bitumen roads in the area, the installation of a free Wi Fi facility at the hall and Village Green area and a prompt response to the removal of a dumped car body. Unfortunately we have not had the same level of support from TCC with our ongoing water quality and security of supply issues. This is the second year in a row that the problem has arisen and the promised budget for a treatment plant has vanished from TCC budget . A 5th Dec. ’16 Public Meeting, called by Mayor Jenny Hill saw 3 actions by TCC outlined 1. Clean out the weir. 2. Inspect the septic systems along the ridge line. 3. Seek E.O.I.’s from industry for a solution. The PDCA has received one requested update from the Mayor in Feb. and another was requested on 13 March, which we still await. To date TCC have delivered one re supply of bottled water after the generous donation of the initial supply by Amatil in Nov.’16. A further request has been made recently. The Mayor stated in Dec. ’16 that she would call another Public Meeting prior to TCC 2017-18 budget considerations . Dates when the Community Centre is available for this meeting have been provided to TCC. A “Water Issue” noticeboard has been set up at a window of the hall. Check there for any news. Some action has begun on the weir and the septics . It is now 5½ months since a “Boil Water “ notice was issued for the village and signs were erected. We now await news of a “SOLUTION PLAN”.
installation for Paluma. We do not believe it to be a tower but any improvement to a nil service is good. Easter Market In your scribe’s, not too wonderful memory it is many many years since we had as busy an Easter Sunday market day. Granted we had an eclectic collection of stalls, the regulars, Leo & Jo, Jack, Colwyn & Roy, and Lynn were there but we also had Rodger’s knick-knacks, Denise Mooney’s superb sewing and Kirsten’s jewellery. So there was plenty on show and, in general, most stall holders were well pleased. It was a cool, partly cloudy day but it did not deter the crown of happy visitors who, we feel, went away impressed with their Paluma experience. The sausage sizzle was another thing altogether. We sold our first sausages at 08.45 hrs, quite unheard of, and thank goodness we had over catered as we had sold over half our stock by 10.30hrs. Many thanks to Michael, Bruno, and John who coped with the early stream of sausage munchers especially in the early stages. A highly profitable morning as we were sold out just before 12.00 hrs. There will be no May market this year but there will be one on Sunday May 25th the day after the annual “Solstice Dance” conducted by “Wattle ’n Gum” - the first weekend of the June School Holidays. Bruce Plant Memorial. Details of the Ceremony on 23rd April to Honour Flight Lieutenant Bruce Albert Plant - a Paluma resident killed in 1943 when the Lancaster Bomber he was piloting was shot down over Germany - will be reported next month.
Birdwatchers will have noticed several of the beach birds and the bush-birds will have migrated away now. Most of them have gone North and only a few of them have gone South. At the same time many reptiles and amphibians will have gone into hibernation for the Winter. Nature lovers will have noticed this. They will also have noticed the changes in the shape and speed of the cloudbanks passing over us since (or even before) the Summer. I have lived in Paluma for almost 30 years now and it seems to me that the weeds in my garden have come too fast for me to keep them at bay. I prefer to pull or dig them out rather than poison them. No matter what it says on the tin or bottle of weed -killer, I still feel that there could be something left in the soil to kill or maybe only slow the growth of the garden plants. I have found a few sloughs (shed skins) of snakes lately and friends have shown me a few that they have found. It is quite normal for them to shed their translucent skins before they go into hibernation as they are still growing while they hibernate. What a loss of wildlife there must be in the lowlands when a cyclone floods the lowlands. While residents do see some birds, animals, reptiles and amphibians in trees above the floodwaters or on telegraph poles or in their house roof, there are terrible wildlife losses in cyclone flooded areas. For new naturalists this is a good time of year to list/record the 4…...Paluma has been for a number of years on a data base for wildlife in your area – all you can see or only the particular Federal funding for Mobile Black Spots via PDCA and PRFB wildlife you are interested in. So, when Spring comes you can applications. We finally made it on the current funding list and add those birds or other wildlife you are interested in. at some time in 2017 Telstra will be putting in some type of Roy Mackay P 27
ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi everyone, I hope you had a great Easter break! Over this term we will be very busy doing everything from playing with our under 8’s to competing in sports activities to shining with our NAPLAN results! It is certainly going to be a very busy term! We have already had our school cross country run and will be sending a team of great runners to the Interschool competition in Townsville. Good luck to those athletes! And congratulations to the Cassowary team for their great cheering performance! The running scores were very tight, with only 6 points separating our three sports teams. Our school ANZAC parade was also a great success with students participating in a very solemn parade as we remember all those that have served, or are currently serving for our freedom. Lest we forget. Our school leaders spoke beautifully, and Mr Coulson was our special guest. As you may have heard on the media, the Minister for Education, the Hon. Kate Jones has announced that Queensland State Schools will delay the implementation of NAPLAN online. Our school has been one of 65 trial schools in Qld. Our students will continue to undertake NAPLAN, in a paper-based format in 2017, as we have done in previous years. The delay means further testing of the assessment platform to ensure that the online tests are 100% ready to go for 2018. We have been able to provide valuable feedback to help improve the platform that our students will use when they undertake the online assessments in 2018. NAPLAN will continue to be a point in time assessment that gives us information on how our students are doing with essential literacy and numeracy skills. We will continue to implement our current curriculum programs ensuring students are developing paper and digital skills in literacy and numeracy. We understand that the Minister has made this decision to put the best interests of our students first. TAG Rolly TAG Rolly will start again on Tuesday 2nd May, and will be run by Kerri-Anne. TAG is a pre-prep program that allows young people to be familiar with our school and easily transition into a formalised school program when they start prep. Parents must stay with the children as we follow playgroup rules and procedures. TAG Rolly will start at 9.00 and finish at 11.00 every Tuesday during the school term, all that carers need to do is to bring a plate to share for morning tea. We can’t wait to see all of the new faces for the 2017 program. Term 2 Important Dates: • ANZAC Day 25/04……….Labour Day Holiday 01/05……….NAPLAN 9-11/05……….School Photos 22/05 • Under 8’s Day 25/05……….Year 4-6 School Camp 29-31/05……….Readers Cup 15/06 • NAIDOC celebration 15/06……….Rolly Athletics carnival 20/06……….Bluestone Cup (game one) 9/06 Cheers Kacey (Principal).

I would like to start by thanking the lady who donated sheets and towels to Gaye and the club and also all those that kindly donate items as well. All donations are gratefully received. A big thank you also from the animals. I would also like to thank the people who saved the little joey back in early April. He is doing really well and thriving, he is named Fielding. Just a small reminder.... There is a wild life talk on 29th April at the Community Hall. It is so good to finally have some cooler weather at last. We have missed the animals that this change brings out. The birds are loving the light showers of rain that land on the trees and the new growth on the bushes. I also hear sound of babies wanting to be fed at that second and Mum and Dad are not doing it fast enough "No Pressure" it is such a calming sound to listen to the birds chatting to one another and so happy. Don't forget if you find an injured bird of any species Gwen’s the one to see. Lastly... I apologise for missing last months news letter, I was not well and missed the dead line. That's all from me, Remember.... Animal injured... Stop and check………...Thanks……...Chris. P28
MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB Wow!, What a busy month we have had without seeming to have done very much. A big shout out to Bart for his continued efforts in getting our green up to such a high standard in recent times. Club Championships The Pairs competition has been completed with Bruce and Michael being victorious over Steve and Hut 25 – 10. The first round of our Singles was played with Bob to play Mal and Bruce to play Michael in the semi-finals. Community Bowls Sadly, the combination of weather and a power outage caused this much anticipated event to be deferred to a later date. All of the teams were looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to get together in true community spirit. Details of the future date will be in the next rag. Brekky Bowls Another successful morning saw 20 players enjoy a sumptuous breakfast and some fast-paced action on the green. Looking forward to the next episode on Sunday 6 May. 8am for Breakfast. Names in by 9am for bowls. Jackpot Pairs Keeps drawing affiliated players from around the district. Our second jackpot has progressed to $143. Macknade Visit Easter Monday saw us taking the community bus and the blue ute to Macknade Bowls Club where we had a great afternoon of competitive bowls, plenty of laughs, an always excellent afternoon tea, a few more laughs, some drinks and even more laughs on the way home. NQ Pennants Our club is competing in the Purple section of the North Queensland Pennants over the Mayday weekend. Our teams will be Bruce, Craig, Bob B, Tim, Mal, Bart, Bob D and Michael with Steve as our reserve. All games are being played in Townsville and we will be making use of the community bus again. Best of luck to our team. Best wishes to Michael and the North Queensland side when they play in the state sides championship at Tweed Heads in May. Bowls Membership A recently overlooked fact; since December, our membership has doubled! We now have 16 regular bowling members and still have a few waiting to be converted. This is a fact that we should be very proud of. Always check your bias and contact Craig on 0479 059 905 if you want any further details
Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc G’day Rollingstone, Well luck was definitely on our side, Cyclone Debbie bypassed our lovely community & Townsville, but unfortunately wreaked havoc in and around the Whitsundays. Our Camp Kanga at Lake Proserpine was extensively damaged and will be closed for quite sometime whilst massive repairs are carried out. I travelled to Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Bowen with Greg Ryding to assess the damage at the Camp. We then volunteered our services to the Proserpine Lions Club who had the mammoth task of feeding the multitude of workers task force with the enormous cleanup. It started with 300 workers which rapidly increased to 550 who required 3 meals a day. It was amazing how such a small army of Volunteers including 250 Rural Firies from NSW banded together to get the job done. Makes you proud to be an Australian (and New Zealander). Chris Crowe the owner of our local Big 4 Caravan Park (Rollingstone) transported machinery down to Airlie Beach to do a massive cleanup of his other Caravan Park in time for the large Easter crowd. He was able to achieve that and get back on time to enjoy Easter in Sunny Nth Qld. He invited our club to conduct an Easter Saturday Brekky at the park. This went off extremely well and was enjoyed by all. You have never seen so many kids of all different sizes and ages on pushbikes, scooters and skateboards, lovely to see families enjoying them selves. The patrons at the park were very generous with their donations for Cyclone Debbie Relief. Thanks to you all and the monies raised will go to those in need. Anzac Day has been and gone for another year. This is a big day on our Calendar. We supplied a delicious Gun Fire Breakfast after the Dawn Service and were close to selling out of all our food. A special thanks to Col Pace who provided all the eggs for the Breakfast…...Thanks Col. The Dawn Service was massive and people were standing 5 & 6 deep around the Cenotaph. What a beautiful setting, the sound of the waves, the dim light of the sun coming up and to top it off a family of Kookaburras doing their shrill call. You don’t get anymore Australian than that. What a beautiful morning…. The Lions and Leo’s were well represented in the March, displaying their Banners and Flags with Pride...all in all a beautiful day. It was great to have a chat with the young soldiers, they are the Anzacs of tomorrow. On Sunday 30th April, a few of our Lions are travelling to Cardwell for the Dedication of the Coral Sea Battle. This was a very significant phase of the Pacific War and the Cardwell Lions Club together with our assistance (Rollingstone Lions) will be providing food and drinks for those in attendance and it will be a great day. For those of you who are new to our lovely community, I invite each and everyone of you to contact me or anyone in Lions if you wish any information on joining our very pro-active Club. Until next month, sit back, relax, enjoy and stay safe…...Dowie…...0412 396 450 P29
Rollingstone & District Seniors Well what a huge change in the temperature, isn’t just wonderful once again. We can’t thank Debbie for rain but we can thank her for taking the humidity away. Bucket loads of” thinking of you” and” our very best wishes” go out to our delightful duo, Bobby and Judy-ana Holt. These two have had the most dreadful year but hoping that things are looking up for them now and that trip to Aotearoa is loaming up in the very near future, they deserve the best holiday ever. If you guys need help, just holler. There are a few things coming up: we have the introduction to Wildlife coming up 29th April at the hall 9am. The biggest Morning tea is rearing or wearing, its bras this year, yep the theme is Decorated Bras. This is being held May 23 rd at the Hall as usual. There is going to be a cent sale, a parade (hopefully,) of THE bras and other amusing interludes. Every year it has got bigger which is so wonderful as we are only a small community, yet we get behind this 100%. A big thankyou also goes out to the tireless workers who commit to making this work, we do have some outstanding folk here. On June 2nd there is the Theatre Restaurant in Ingham. It’s a pity that the evening bowls has not attracted more folk to come along, it is a relaxing fun evening and all that go enjoy it immensely. It isn’t a senior thing, as I’ve said many times, it is open to all ages and that is why the hours are from 7pm to 9pm. There are several trip ideas in the pipe line and one I have just received is to Yeppoon. It is going by rail to Rockie and return, staying 5 nights with beachfront accommodation. Arrive Sunday, depart Friday. Cost $520 per person twin share. We can look into it if there is enough interest. Thought it a good idea to get the information sheets written up, makes it easier to see when and where events are on. No excuse for not knowing. How are those Facebook literate finding the new group, we are trying all means to get the news out there. Well, the cooler weather means I must get off this and go chop some trees or similar. Cheers………….Gaye

NEW FLAGS FOR ROLLINGSTONE RSL Recently, I had the pleasure of presenting a new Australian Flag and a new Queensland Flag to members of the Rollingstone RSL sub-branch, at the Mystic Sands Golf Club. I know these flags will be flown with pride and respect by the Rollingstone RSL. BETTER PROTECTIONS FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE I am pleased and proud to report that tough new domestic violence laws were agreed to during the last sitting of the Queensland Parliament on 22 March 2017. The Private Members Bill, introduced by the LNP, rebalances the scales of justice in favour of the victims of these cowardly crimes, rather than the perpetrators of domestic violence. An individual charged with a serious domestic violence offence in Queensland will now have to prove why they should be granted bail and allowed back into the community before they face court. This is a reversal of the normal onus of proof whereby the prosecution would have to demonstrate why the accused should remain in custody. These new laws also put in place more safeguards for victims of domestic violence by allowing courts to order alleged offenders to be fitted with GPS tracking devices as a condition of bail and for urgent appeal rights in cases where bail is granted, allowing them an opportunity to remove themselves from a potentially dangerous situation. The LNP has taken the lead in introducing these tougher laws to combat domestic violence. After setting up the ‘Not Now, Not Ever’ Taskforce chaired by Dame Quentin Bryce in 2014 and its report being released in 2015, the LNP has relentlessly pursued and supported the implementation of its recommendations. Enough is enough. MOBILE OFFICE OPPORTUNITIES ON TOWNSVILLE'S NORTHERN BEACHES I recently held a number of mobile office opportunities in communities on Townsville's Northern Beaches including at Purono Park and Bluewater (20 April) and Saunders Beach (21 April). This followed on from earlier mobile office opportunities at Paluma and Rollingstone. I also recently held a community afternoon tea with local residents at the Rollingstone Community Hall. Community groups, organisations and clubs that would like me to attend one of their meetings to discuss a local issue are welcome to contact the Hinchinbrook Electorate office.

Rollingstone & District YOUNG CITIZENS OF THE YEAR 2017 TROUPIES activities for MAY
Regular Activities: Thursday afternoons at 4:30pm we hold BASKETBALL TRAINING at the Rollingstone State School. Saturday morning at 9:30am BASKETBALL GAME at the Rollingstone State School, cost is $1.00. Sunday at 5:00pm, Touch Football at Pace Park (community hall). Cost is $1.00 and all ages welcome. Rubbish Pick Up The kids regular monthly commitment to keep the creek and Bushy Parker Park free of rubbish is on Friday 19th May, kicking off at 4:30pm. We will of course have a sausage sizzle (supplies very kindly donated to Troupies from Fisherman’s Landing Fishing and Social Club) and everyone is welcome to come and help. Fundraising We are still fundraising for T-shirts for the children to wear and have had good response so far. Look out for us in the future wearing our very own club t-shirts. Here is a sneak preview.
Easter Egg Basket Raffle was won by Lorraine and George of Mystic Avenue. Our thanks to all who supported us. All of our activities are at very low cost and we have done this as we want as many Rollingstone kids as possible to have the opportunity to join in the activities purely designed for them. We would like to acknowledge the Fisherman’s Landing Fishing and Social Club for their on-going support to Troupies. Movie Night There will be a movie night on June 2nd Friday. “SING” which should be great for the kids. We will have hot chips, popcorn, spring rolls and chicken nuggets on sale. This will be held at Pace Park.
