What a busy month August has been. The Camp Oven cooking workshop was well attended, with everyone having a great time learning how to cook in camp ovens. I was treated to some of the meal it was delicious. The Welcome to Community morning tea was a small but very friendly affair. We met with new residents some who have been here a short while and some who have only come to live here is the past few weeks. We welcome you all especially, most likely, Rollingstone’s newest resident, Baby Eleanor only 2 ½ weeks old (at the time) and her parents, Wynta and Lachlan.

The “Closing the Gap” activity sponsored by the Association and organised by Sue Thompson saw Students, Teachers and Aides from Rollingstone SS, Mutarnee SS, Shalom Primary School and the Northern Beaches High School come together in a fun morning of activities to celebrate the uniqueness of First Nation culture. The morning kicked off with 2 Traditional Dances performed by the Northern Beaches Senior Students and Shalom students performed ‘The Rainbow’ song they have been practicing for NAIDOC week. After a brief morning tea, the students spent the next 2 hours moving between activities with an indigenous cultural theme. How birds got their colourful feathers, rock painting, learning traditional songs and dances, a treasure hunt, face painting and scratch art were only some of the activities the students completed. Lunch saw the Lions cooking and serving sausages on bread, damper and fruit. The afternoon saw the Senior Girls and Senior Boys teaching the younger students more traditional dances that were performed for the teachers, volunteers and other Aobservers.daylikethis does not just happen. There is a lot of organising for months beforehand. The Association wishes to give a massive thank you to Sue for taking on the task and brining this activity to life. Your organisational skills are wonderful and the way you pulled everyone and the required gear together is extraordinary. We also wish to thank the Volunteers who assisted with the set us and breakdown and those staffing the activities on the day; the Teachers, Teacher Aides, the students from Mutarnee, Rollingstone and Shalom Primary Schools for your expertise and enthusiastic participation. To the Seniors of the Northern Beaches High School please accept our most sincere thank you for your participation, assistance with activities and guiding the younger students. Your presence really brought home the meaning of the day. Thank you to the Lions for preparing and serving the meal and a special thanks to the folk from the Community who generously made and donated the Dampers. If I have forgotten anyone please accept our gratitude. Comments received about the activity “this has been a great day”; “The children have really enjoyed themselves today”; “Everything was so well run”. Thanks Sue and Everyone involved.

• The Pineapple Festival is upon us and we’re desperately in need of VOLUNTEERS. If you can help, please do. We’ll feed and water you (non alcoholic) and all insurances are in order, along with security in place on the day, and First Aid. Vollies are an extremely scarce commodity these days. However, you’d only be required for no more than 2, 3 or 4 hours; so, if you can help, please call John Holliday on 0414 808 483.

• A couple of us are also working at implementing the Purple Poppy project locally and Deb Calder laid our first wreath at the Vietnam Vets’ service because it was Deb who first asked if there was something we could do to celebrate Animals in War. We ran with it and are moving steadily ahead! Several extremely kind local women knitted and crocheted a goodly number of purple poppies and Suzi Vincent has transformed them into wreaths, of which one was laid on Long Tan Day, as mentioned above and there are more plans in the pipeline.

• Congratulations to Dianne Greene on being presented Life Membership from Swimming South Qld at the SQ AGM. Di has been a technical official for over 40 years. She was the first female to become a starter. Di has been a technical official in many regionals and SNQ was one of them. We hope to see Di on pool deck again in the near future.

• We need attendants at the two entries to help with the gold coin donations and programmes starting at 8.00am.

• So, this month we’ve had the Firies new building opened by State representative boffins a credit to Raymond Pace and his Team and will no doubt be a wonderful asset into the future; we’ve done the New Residents’ Morning Tea which had a dismal attendance but was successful and enjoyable in its own way; we’ve done Vietnam Veterans’ Day on a perfect NQ winter’s day with quite a good visiting crowd in attendance but few locals, and a super little service; and we’ve also done our Cultural Day (“Closing the Gap”) involving approx. 100 kids from several Townsville Northern Beaches schools. This event took a huge amount of organising and input by Mrs. Sue Thompson who did an absolutely wonderful job which proved itself on the day. BIG congratulations to all those who made the day such a success…….and THANK YOU.

• To direct people to the car park 8.am to 11am.

Noel Silver passed away during July. He was only 65. Not many would remember Noel, but he was a long term resident some while ago and still has family living locally.

• Two groups of raffle ticket sellers first group at 9.00 am to 12 and second group 12 to 3.00pm.

We are aware there are many more suffering from the season’s ills, but as we don’t know all the names, we’ll just wish you all the best and to get well soon.

Live well, love much, laugh often..... “Sancho Panza”. Are you able to help out at our famous Rollingstone Pineapple Festival on Saturday 10th September?

And you might like to try this with the kids, or just for recipe/9gqmkk3igoldenhttps://www.taste.com.au/recipes/fun:syrupmicrowavemugcake

• Relieving other volunteers and ensuring that volunteers have water and a meal ticket from the Lions Club outlet. Please contact John Holliday on 0414808483 or email john09255@gmail.com

• Thankfully, with Covid restrictions lifted/eased, life has been somewhat back to “once upon a time” standard which makes for easier working at the Community Centre, and a lot happier workforce.

• Also in September, we’re having our AGM, and Memberships are due ($2 per year) now. Date and Time: Thursday, Septr. 22nd @ 7pm. And, I think that’s about it for August/September. Oh, yes: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” (Thank you, Mahatma Gandhi.)

We need volunteers to do a 3 4 hour shift and then enjoy the Festival.

Hello Rollingstoners, Plenty of ‘ARTY’ stuff happening. We encourage you to put your paintings into the Inaugural Pineapple Festival Competition. Don’t be shy, show your support for a great local initiative. The only criteria is that it must be pineapple related, even tenuously. That’s a pretty wide choice. Please deliver your completed works to Community Centre Office by Wednesday 7th September.

. The Community of Balgal Beach extends a “thank you” to the soldiers attending who have participated in the Service for the last 5 years. Some of these soldiers will be attending the Pineapple Festival and will be bringing some of their vehicles with them. The Guard Commander, CPL Brenton Alexander has attended four previous ceremonies locally, and said it was always a very special occasion for him to attend the service at Balgal Beach. We thank them for their Service.

We have been busy lately with Bunnings sausage sizzles and the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, providing the first day lunch for the riders and the support crews. Its nice to get feedback that the annual bike ride, now back in action, raised $320,000 for children’s cancer research and that our lions club was able to make a Wecontibution.werealso able to provide the refreshments for the opening of the new Rollingstone Rural Fire Brigade, another important milestone moment for our local ForCommunity.thosethat were able to attend the Welcome to Newbies Morning you also enjoyed our catering as they were introduced to the various community groups that are the glue to holding us together and protecting us in any major disaster or offer everyday support. Each quarter we meet with our neighbouring Lions’ Clubs for a Zone Meeting and this year we have related to the Townsville Clubs rather than the clubs North of us, we were certainly made welcome with lots of laughter and new projects to consider.

Rollingstone & District Lions Club Inc.

For some time, we have been considering how to better connect to the community and we have laid the foundation of a Community Sunday Morning Brunch and excited to launch the first one on Sunday 28th April 2023

It’s an extension of the Christmas Day Lunch we introduced last year. The idea is to encourage all to drop in at our den for a Sunday 10.00 am Brunch on the 4th Sunday of each month, just to socialise and get to know each other over a light brunch and a short, interesting talk on what’s happening behind the scenes both locally and a little further away, or sometimes just a few games or quizzes, no formal stuff. At the start we will have to charge $10 per head, kids free, but the idea is to get as many people involved bringing a plate and there will be no charge. As we develop, we could also include some kiddie’s games after the brunch but we need community support and your ideas on this one as its designed to strength our relationships within the local community. As a new mum with a 12 month old, our Sunday Brunch could also be a toddies support group. Any questions feel free to contact me on 0490 338663

Thank you to past committee members and welcome new committee members. We can’t thank the outgoing Committee enough for everything they have done. They have made sure we always have a good night, and have gone home with a full belly. They have organised our trips away together, always ensuring a fun weekend but I’m not sure how much fishing was done! It definitely takes a team to keep everything running. So a huge thank you to everyone!

Hi to all back in Balgal. I am being very cheeky here writing this from the Rocky Mountaineer. Now those of you have done this trip know just how fabulous this is. We are very fortunate to have gorgeous weather, there is a heat wave over here and we find it great. The days are like our winter, but the nights and mornings are rather crisp, like cold but we can enjoy the change for a few days. Have not had much luck sighting wildlife as yet but did spend some close time with a couple of golden mantled ground squirrels, true little cuties but very aware. I saw a magpie and crows, the same as ours except I think the crow’s call had a Canadian accent, slightly different to our guy's call. We also saw a bird in Calgary which was beautiful but trying to find out what it was , I was told it was a magpie. It is much larger and a black n white colour but with an iridescent blue on it’s long tail. I Googled and found it was a Black Billed magpie or American magpie. Tomorrow, we have been told the day temperature could get up to 38o so will wait and see but we are in air conditioning so it shouldn't matter. Have as yet, not seen any bears but maybe in Alaska. Enjoying the food, trying local cuisine naturally. By the time I return the little critters should be starting to come in. I hope to be refreshed and ready to go.

We had a lovely turnout for Vietnam Veterans Day service at Balgal CenotaphBeachonthe 18th of TheAugust.opening address speaker was Rollingstone RSL President Ewan Cameron. The MC was Army Reserve Major Retired, John Muller OAM. Others who participated were Rollingstone RSL Padre Bob Richardson and Councillor Margie Ryder, who gave the closing address.

For the first time this year, a special wreath was laid for the many animals who were a brave and loyal operational support of their Units in all war situations. Thank you to the ladies who took the time to make the wreath. The wreath will be included in all future remembrance ceremonies. The Presidents of The War Widows Assoc from Townsville and Ingham presented a wreath on behalf of all Vietnam War Thewidows.Catafalque Party was provided by 9th Transport Squadron, 3 CSS B from Lavarack Barracks, Townsville, under the command of Cpl Brenton Alexander. The RSL Committee would like to extend a thank you to the community members who attended the morning, as well as to those who gave of their time to set up the equipment including Darryl Spann and Ian Dow. Afterward visitors, RSL members, and the catafalque party, met at the Mystic Sands Golf Club for lunch and drinks. The Rollingstone RSL would like to once again, invite the residents Rollingstoneof and Balgal Beach to future events honouring those who served our Country and to our RSL night each Friday at the Golf Club. An extra photo in this month’s Rolly Rag, showing the members of the Catafalque Party was provided by Mark Smith. Thank you Mark.

It’s essential that our volunteers have the necessary infrastructure and equipment they need to fulfil the pivotal role they play, and it was a fitting tribute to unveil this great new facility during Rural Fire Service Week.

’d like to take this opportunity to extend the invitation to any Rollingstone and Balgal Beach residents who may be interested in joining the Rural Fire Brigade, as our volunteer base ages, they are always looking for new people to join the ranks.

It’s great to see that the Rollingstone Rural Fire Brigade has finally got a dedicated facility to call home, it’s terrific to know that the 39 volunteer strong brigade now has a first class fire station to hang their helmets for years to come.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the official opening of the new Rollingstone Rural Fire Brigade Station, which coincided with Rural Fire Service Week.

I’m excited knowing the iconic Rollingstone Pineapple Festival is just around the corner, the annual family fun day that puts Rollingstone on the map, celebrating the pineapple harvest and local music in the region. After a two year hiatus the return of the Rollingstone Pineapple Festival is very welcome news for locals and visitors. It’s going to be a fantastic day filled with markets and entertainment the whole family can enjoy, and all funds raised will benefit the local community.

’d like to congratulate the tight knit Rollingstone community and local businesses for their advocacy and playing their part in securing the necessary funding for this project.

Our volunteers are always first to put their hand up when it’s needed and are always ready to respond when disaster Istrikes.

Living in North Queensland, we’re certainly no stranger to natural events. The new $450,000 fire station will provide a welcome boost to the Rural Fire Service capability in the southern section of the Hinchinbrook Ielectorate.

I feel honoured that I’ve been asked to judge several competitions on the day along with Cr Margie Ryder. These major events would not be possible without those who put in the hours to make them so successful, such as the Rollingstone and District Lions Club and the Rollingstone and District Community Association, as well as support from Townsville City Council.

I look forward to catching up with everyone at the Pineapple Festival.

The Leap of Faith, my horror! I slowly climbed the pole, my legs were shivering and my hands were starting to become a pool of sweat. “Don’t look down, don’t think about anything!” I whispered in my head. I kept on climbing and there I was at the top of the pole, standing proudly. Oh no, here comes the stress! It was time to jump, 3, 2, 1… Go! I jumped, my head lifted drowsily, my legs became numb, AHHHH, I screamed in embarrassment. It was finished, I was so relieved. I was voted to have the loudest scream. I’m on a winning streak, I even beat Mr EmilyStallman!

The A frame activity in the amazing race was the best because it included strategies and teamwork to get the other side of the green field. In the A frame you got five ropes and you have to be in the middle of the A. The member in the A frame has to depend on their team of rope balancers to get across the field. What a challenge! Super Slingshot

I was extremely nervous to do the slingshot, but I still wanted to give it a go. I was standing before my classmates, who were all going to pull me many meters in the air by just one cable. This was NUTS! Once I had the harness on, we all started running and in an instant I was flying. My scream certainly scared some birds away. The feeling of being completely weightless was scary at first, but then as my heart started beating again, I felt more secure and safe. As I slowly drifted down I felt proud in my heart that I had a go at this awesome experience.Violet

Archery Tag As the game began every one sprinted to find cover among the trees. The combat teams hid in the scrub with the cool mist providing good camouflage. The first encounter began and I took cover as an arrow whizzed past me, so close that I could hear it piercing the cold air. Teams found a settling area and the people were eliminated from the game after being hit with the arrows. Both Karlie and I moved with stealth and defeated anyone that stepped in our Rakiahpath.&Maitland

Paluma Wildlife

The Victorian Rifle Bird is a one of a kind bird found in Paluma for its amazing appearance. It’s feathers, the glimmer of metallic blue, covered its head and chest. It slowly flew down to join our eating area to our absolute amazement. We all shrieked in happiness as it started to dance. Then to our further surprise, a smaller bird with a chest full of yellow followed him down in the excitement to watch +GabriellaHaileyperform.himGiddyBerra

The Community Association AGM will be held on Saturday 1st October at 4pm in the community shelter in the park. This is your opportunity to contribute to what the Association does in the future. Everyone is welcome but financial members are the only ones who can vote. There have been some untrue stories circulating about the Association during the past year and this will be an opportunity to learn the truth and contribute towards the future. Please bring your ideas, queries and enthusiasm to the meeting. You will meet other Toomulla Beach residents and hear about progress on the Telstra tower and other developments. The popular Lucky Numbers will start with the first draw on Friday 23rd September. There will be a $50 winner each week for 5 weeks. The cost of each lucky number is $10 for 5 weeks ($2 per week), and you can reserve your own lucky numbers if you get in quickly. See Rhonda to reserve your spots and pay. Residents will have noticed that there have been several house sales in Toomulla Beach this year. This usually means that some residents are leaving and new ones arriving. We would like to welcome all the newcomers to our community and hope that you will join others in making this an attractive and welcoming place to live. Please tell us how we can improve our community in the coming year. As our population ages, more residents are suffering health concerns. Our thoughts go to everyone who has been in hospital or is unwell at present. Unfortunately, we are also losing residents to sickness and old age. In the past month we acknowledge the death of Richard Johnson. Richard was a long time Saltwater Drive resident who was the former Director of Outdoor Education at Cathedral School, Townsville. He was born in the United Kingdom and returned there most years to spend a few months on his beloved houseboat. He passed away while doing what he loved.

This year, August 5th saw us open our new fire station and then on August 22nd, our local fire brigade turned 60. Sixty years of locals from within our community looking after locals. The Brigade was started mainly by farmers in the area with a meeting held on 19th June 1962, to call for a rural fire brigade to be formed. Present at that meeting were H Henderson, V Crabb, M Pace, J Gottani, G Rattazzo, J O’Connor, E Berra, S Dunsby, J Taylor, A Wrigley, A Gottani, W Hankin, J Pace, C Pace, W Stouth and D. Hansen. Knapsacks, with an attached spray nozzle, were the only firefighting equipment the Brigade had until the early 80’s, when they received their first appliance. It was a ‘64 Model Ford truck from the Whitsundays, a retired Urban firefighting unit. Today the brigade have two fire fighting appliances, two units for the back of utes, a mop up trailer and a support vehicle. To celebrate our birthday and new station, we are having a community celebration, the afternoon of Saturday September 24th at the new fire station, starting at 5pm. Come and see the station and enjoy a sausage sizzle and soft drinks at 6pm. BYO chairs. Please message Lucinda Pace ph: 0427707285 if attending. I It’s scary how fast this year is slipping away. Here we are at the ninth month already. That means it is time to pay your annual dues to the Community Association. Dues remain unchanged at the amazing rate of $5 per family so please take action now so that you will be financial at the Annual General Meeting.

NEXT MARKET SEPT 3rd 1st Saturday of Every Month! 8am to 1pm The Esplanade Balgal Beach https://www.facebook.com/balgalbeachmarket

August has been a rather quiet time at Paluma. What with the frenetic social activities of July including the Bush Dance, Paluma Market and the Paluma Push, we needed some ‘time out’ to recoup and recharge the batteries. Not only that, but the dreaded lurgies and winter bugs finally found their way to the top of the mountain with several residents struck down with the flu and/or Covid over the past weeks. It hasn’t been a good time for socialising with many retreating into isolation to avoid the bugs and/or to recover from their symptoms. Those who were not impacted by illness took advantage of the beautiful weather to travel around the North and others spent time away from the village to enjoy events in town such as the Chamber Music Festival. The cool winter weather has been great for the garden. The grass isn’t growing as quickly so there is more time to tend to the garden beds. For those of us growing the more temperate plants we have been rewarded with beautiful flower displays of camellias and azaleas. The rhododendrontropicalvarieties have been particularly spectacular this season with brilliant blooms after the unseasonal autumn rainfall. Some dedicated gardeners have daffodils and jonquils ready to burst into bloom in the spring and my beloved daphne is flowering for the very first time! In many village gardens the ever present and very persistent scrub turkeys have been wreaking havoc on favourite pot plants and garden beds. Not only do these inconsiderate intruders tip over and dismantle pot plants, but they shred and destroy expensive and treasured plants. It is heartbreaking at times to return home and discover the damage, but we are as persistent as the turkeys in trying to find ways and means to share our rainforest village and gardens with these feathered ‘friends’ (or foes!). Big news for ‘Len Cook Ceramics’ with Paluma’s very own Potter taking out yet another award for his work

On 22 July, Len was presented with the Betty Jackson Memorial Award at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville. The winning artwork is a Flower Container made from local clay with feldspar intrusions. The piece was fired in Len’s famous Anagama kiln. Congratulations to Len for this latest achievement. Social events will begin to ramp up towards the end of August. The SES and Paluma Rural Fire Brigade will continue with their regular meetings and on Saturday night the 20th August we go ‘Back to the 50’s’ at the Community Hall. The fun and dancing starts at 6.30 pm with 50’s tunes on the jukebox and the Bar will be open. It’s sure to be a fun night and a great time to catch up with much missed friends and neighbours. International Night then takes place on Saturday 17 September Warm regards and best wishes to Lynn Hyland who celebrated her birthday on 6 August!

As the end of winter approaches we continue to enjoy the cool nights at Paluma and the wood heaters are getting a good workout. With many clear nights there have been some rather spectacular sunsets on the range with brilliant orange and fiery pink and crimson skies at dusk. Such is life on the mountain. See you soon on the misty mountain at Paluma. Michele mbird09@bigpond.comBird

The Pace family has been in the Rural Fire Service since the local branch’s inception in the 1960's. The tradition carries on today with family having roles as First Officers, Secretary, Fire Warden and members in the local brigades.
