NOTES FROM THE R.T.C Hello to all, By the time you read this article, the Rollingstone & District Community Association AGM would have been conducted. The results of the RaDCA Committee Elections are posted on the Noticeboard at the Centre and on the Community Association Facebook page.

Australian Hearing were at the Community Centre again in August. They had a good up take of appointments, with several walk ins taking advantage of their presence. Australian Hearing try to come to the district at least twice a year. Keep your eyes out for the advertising in the Rolly Rag. This service is a wonderful way of being able to have a basic hearing test without travelling into Townsville.

To Anne and Bob Zander - Two of the Community's stalwart residents have recently taken to the road to commence their next big adventure down south. Travel safe, enjoy the ocean breezes from the cliffs of Scarborough and revel in your family's company. You will be missed.

27 August saw another working Bee held by the Rollingstone Coast Care Group who have a goal to clear the beachfront on the Esplanade of feral garden plants – mainly guinea grass and periwinkle, to bring the beach front back to near natural condition. In this workshop a rubbish sweep of the area between Fisherman’s Landing and the southern end of the Esplanade was made. Their goal is for the benefit of the whole community and the beach environment. Our volunteers would appreciate any assistance they can get. Interested – call Chris on 47707855 for more information Birdlife Townsville will be at the RTC on Wednesday 7 September to present a talk on the foreshore and migratory birds of this area. This is a free event, open to the general public. To follow up this talk Birdlife Townsville will be holding a birdwatching session on Saturday 24 September from 10.30am at the southern end of the Esplanade, Balgal Beach. They will have the migratory and foreshore birds in the sights of their binoculars. Once again this a free event and all interested parties are cordially invited to attend.

10 September is the date of our “jewel in the crown” of Community Events - the 2016 Rollingstone Pineapple Festival. Come along and discover all the things to do and see on the day. The day includes live music, from our home grown artists and 45RPM and Keith Bagley; a Slim Dusty Tribute who are both well known around the Townsville District. There is plenty of activities for the kids, Petting Zoo, Pony Rides, Laser Skirmish, Jumping Castle, and Polly’s Craft. Kid’s live performances by our own Boot Scooters, Windy Wizard and our local African Acrobat, Japhet who will be conducting 2 workshops during the day. Why not come on down and discover for yourselves what else we have in store for the day. Don’t forget the PINEAPPLE DETOPPING!!!!

Exercise - we are lucky to have two very experienced exercise trainers attending at the Community Centre. Benita provides an excellent class, 8am on Friday mornings for all fitness levels and Nicole caters for the Yoga enthusiasts on Thursday evenings 6.30pm and Saturday mornings at 10.30am.

Computer training Broadband for Seniors. We at the RTC are still looking for a volunteer with good computer skills and the will to train Seniors to use computers. We are offering one-on-one training 1 day a week to begin with; appointments are scheduled.

Bus hire – It is wonderful to report that the Community Bus has been very busy over the past couple of months. It has been hired to go to cultural events in Townsville, attend meetings in Cardwell, take groups to connect with travel arrangements and as a courtesy bus for local parties etc. Thank you.

Our first Art Exhibition was a very successful event – It was heartening to see so many works of art and craft exhibited. Congratulation goes to everyone who exhibited and to the winners. Now we know you artists are out there - the Paluma Art Exhibition is happening in September from 21 – 27, see the advert in the Community Noticeboard. Entry forms are available at the RTC. Seniors Week – See the Seniors contribution for a run down.

Adult Learning Week is 1-8 September – consider your options to learn something new – start a new career path or enhance your knowledge in your current occupation. For more info give Chris a call.

Spirit of Anzac is a free travelling display, soon to be in Townsville's Entertainment Centre. The Townsville dates are from 2 September to 11 September. Entry is free however you will need to book online at http://www.spiritofanzac.gov.au/book-tickets, Unlike any other touring exhibition, the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience features genuine artefacts and historical stories placed within a fully immersive space.

Congratulations to all the tireless workers and students who presented the 100 Year Celebration of the Rollingstone State School.

I particularly liked the effort put in by the students to present what their school means for them, looking both back to the past and forward to the future. Well done everyone.

Tuesday evening 30 August, 6pm at the Rollingstone Community Centre saw the opening of a Consultation Meeting of ESCO Pacific’s Director Steven Rademaker and Allison Hawke Development Manager to discuss the Rollingstone Solar Farm Project. By the time this newsletter is distributed details of this meeting will be better known.

Arthur Bonnett has had a lengthy bad trot with his health but is now continuing to improve – AND, he’ll be 90 in September. Now that’s something of which to be proud. Goodonya, Arthur!! Simon Barnes has had many weeks of illness and accident recovery. We wish for his recovery to be quick so he can get back to some normal living. Bob and Anne Zander have moved away due to Anne’s ongoing chronic illness. They’ll be living in Scarborough (north of Brisbane) to start a new life. We wish them all the very best. They’ve both contributed mightily to our community with Bob serving for 3 years as President of the Community Association, and both of them closely associated with the School. Brian Knight’s mum, Dora, passed away during the month. Dora and husband Bob lived locally for many years, so were well-known to us all. Brian is our Centre Manager, Chris’s partner.

Bob Green has had a rough trot health-wise recently. Let’s hope it’s now all over and he’s well and truly on the mend. Bobby Holt went “boondi-up” during the month which required medical attention but he’s back home now and hopefully recovered from his acrobatic antics.

Phyllis Nash lost her husband Lawrie during August. He’d been very sick for a very long time. We pass on our condolences to Phyllis and family and wish them all many peaceful days ahead.  Big, big thanks to the LIONS for the 3 x Garden Benches that will provide much convenience and relief under our arbour of trees as they mature in Pace Park.  And while on the subject of the Lions, we’re hoping to partner with them to do something regarding promoting Suicide Prevention & Support within the Townsville Northern Beaches. We feel it such an important health issue that we need to contribute.  Well, what an event was our Art & Craft Exhibition/Competition!! It far exceeded our expectations, which we really didn’t have because we were flying blind and actually didn’t know what to expect. We had many, many varied entries and exhibits and 124 people came through the door. Sadly, once again, not a lot of locals – mainly visitors; but it was a lovely, happy, relaxed and friendly day with a tremendous attitude and ambience. We’ll do it again next year and it’ll be even better because we’ll know more about what we’re doing; and in the meantime, we’ll hopefully present a similar day for our kids.  The winning entry was a quilt made by Shannon Sandford from Jensen which she has now so kindly donated to the Community Association and we’ll be hanging it in the Hall from a timber frame supplied by the Sharp Family from Mutarnee.  If all goes to plan, we’ll be doing something similar for the kids during their summer vacation, working with “Troupies” and the Lions. More to come after the Pineapple Festival has been held..........  Council has finally had the western corner of Marlin Street and Balgal Beach Road cleaned up. They probably got sick of our bleating. Anyhow, it’s now much safer and looks really good.  The Vietnam Veterans’ Service at the Beach cenotaph was once again just so poorly attended and it’s difficult to know why. 50 people tops in attendance and that includes everyone: locals, visitors, officials, workers, soldiers! The service was poignant, the setting positively beautiful, the day glorious – how privileged are we to live in such a wondrous country.  Very many thanks to Shirley Cattle for her donation of the old Railway Station painting she entered in the Craft Competition recently. It’s truly “a work of art” and we’re most thrilled to add it to our collection.  I was fortunate enough to receive a “Spirit of Anzac” Award from our local RSL, under this category: The Outstanding Community Member Award recognizes a community ‘volunteer’, including a Director, Staff Member, Sub-Branch Committee Member, Patron or Club Member, who has demonstrated outstanding loyalty and service towards their club and/or the local community. I’m so absolutely thrilled and extremely humbled, all because of my late Husband and Father and great-Uncle – servicemen all.  The matter of a Men’s Shed has again been proposed to us. At the moment, I doubt it can happen here at the Rollingstone Community Centre for many reasons. However, we’ll keep the residents informed of anything further we can add. It must be stressed that infrastructure for our kids is also a prime necessity and we also need to get to work on that front asap.  As the progenitor of the new local Medical Surgery and Pharmacy, it is with great pride and satisfaction that we heard today that it will open the last week in August. This is the end result of the Community Association’s subsidisation of a medical service and pharmaceutical delivery for 20 months 4 years ago. Perhaps one of our more notable achievements!!

Gidday Rollingstone As the deadline for the Rag articles slips quietly by and I find myself belting the bejezuz out of the keyboard once again, knowing all the while that the editors are secretly plotting my untimely demise, it dawns on me that you’ve probably had enough of the ‘war stories’ and I should probably get a bit serious about reminding you to look both ways before crossing the street. No? OK, one more.

Did I ever tell you about the time I was flagged down by a red faced, stuttering life guard at the stinger net on the Esplanade. He was hopping around like a half cut wallaby and pointing to the beach mumbling that he ‘wasn’t sure what to do or how to handle this’.

Being the cynic that I am, my mind went straight to crocodiles, body parts or washed up land mines (just like other times). To my very pleasant surprise, the problem was far less threatening – five… yes… FIVE – tall, tanned, blonde, beautiful women – STARK BOLLOCKY NAKED – on beach towels. I turned back to the life guard who had, by this time, disintegrated into a blubbering, dribbling mess and was still unable to form words, let alone string sentences together. I put my hand on his shoulder, “You wait here mate… I’ll look after this one for you. These situations can be a bit tough to handle.” Good of me, don’t you think? I mean, they could have been terrorists creating a diversion, with the intention of taking over our community (one bum cheek at a time) – it could have ended up in an all-out brawl – I’ve seen these situations turn pretty nasty. I even considered calling for back-up – for about a millisecond. All things considered, my decision to protect the young life guard from, what could have been a dangerous confrontation, was nothing short of ‘selfless’ – at least that’s the way I spun the story to Allison later. I mustered all the “cool” I possibly could and walked casually down to the beach… ok I actually broke into a trot when I thought they were going to get up.

The potential terrorist threat turned out to be a group of British back-packer super-models who, after a lengthy chat with yours truly (you can’t rush the negotiation process), understood that once word had spread that they were naked on the beach, there would not be enough oxygen to go around to revive the countless little old men who would beat a track to the stinger net and stand around as casually as they could, trying not to stare whilst doing their best impersonation of a half open pocket knife.

The girls, who hadn’t moved at all during our entire conversation (thank you God), reluctantly put on their bikinis – which amounted to nothing more than an assortment of coloured dental floss – and agreed that a family beach might not have been the best choice to work on an all-over tan. They also agreed to turn around and blow kisses to the young life guard - who promptly fainted. No moral to this story – it was just a great day.

On your next visit to my office (provided you come in the front door and not the servants entrance or the defendant’s corridor), you’ll be greeted by the latest addition to the front counter – a big, brand new, spanky looking security-glass screen. We’re probably one of the last police stations in the State to have one fitted – it isn’t particularly warm and inviting and some might even say it’s not a necessary addition – but it’s here to stay. Rest assured that we are still the warm, sweet, loving and caring people we’ve always been, behind tempered glass.

Let me change hats for a second… as the Rollingstone State School P&C President, I want to give a big pat on the back to anyone and everyone who had anything to do with the 100 year celebration last Saturday. The set-up and planning was undertaken by the school staff and a handful of volunteers who did an outstanding job. There are way too many people to name for the “thank-you” they deserve Dowie and Greg and the band of merry men who did the lion’s share of the marquee set-up and take down. The Rollingstone LIONS for the food and the bar. Allison, Lisa, Emmy and Kerri-Anne for the merchandise, goodies and raffle tickets. Natalie and Melanie who ran around in the back-ground looking after the money. Amanda and Lurlene for selling the ride bracelets. Lyle for making the grounds look schmik and tidy. Pastor Adrian and his crew for all their help in the background. The school staff (past and present) for taking ownership of the event (being the custodians and staff of the school at the 100 year mark is a big deal in my book). RaDCA, Rollingstone RSL and Toomulla Community Association for all the tables and chairs and marquees. And of course the students, both past and present who made the day as special as it was. If I’ve forgotten anyone, I’m sorry, you did a GREAT job and thank you. ***** One more quick change of hat , I’m hoping that by now most of you will have heard about the TROUPIES. It’s a fairly newly formed little group that wants to run activities, sports and functions for the kids in our community. They’ve already kicked off basketball afterhours at the school on Mondays and Saturdays and craft sessions at the BBQ’s near the Landing. They have a ‘disco’ planned for the 2nd of September (6pm to 8pm at the Hall, $6 for snags and a drink) and they give back to the community by doing rubbish pick-ups around Bushy Parker Park and other places.

The TROUPIES already have about 59 kids on the books so if you haven’t already been involved, get on board – they’d be happy to have you. Any parents who want to get into this with us are more than welcome. ***** A quick chat about the next cyclone season… if we get one. I had a very preliminary meeting with the Disaster Management Coordinator from Townsville Council last week and we’ll be having a formal meeting with our own Local Disaster Management Group in a few weeks’ time. What I need for everyone to be doing right now, is to start looking at what you might need to do to prepare yourselves if a cyclone comes our way. If you think you might get water through your house – buy some sand bags BEFORE you need them. If you don’t have a generator for when the power drops out – buy one now or make arrangements with someone who has one. If cyclones just scare the bejezuz out of you – start thinking about where you might be able to go.

All I’m asking is that you don’t leave it till the last minute to get prepared. If you need advice, come and see us.

GREAT IDEA FOR MEN’S SHEDS ON TOWNSVILLE’S NORTHERN BEACHES Recently, I became aware of an interesting proposal from Warren Butterworth from Balgal Beach about the establishment of a Men’s Shed for the Rollingstone District. I think this is a very good idea and I would like to support it. Men’s Sheds have been established in other communities in the Hinchinbrook electorate and they have been very successful in bringing people together.

In addition to enabling social interaction amongst men in the Rollingstone District, interaction with the members of other Men’s Sheds in the region is an added benefit. If a Men’s Shed is established in the Rollingstone District, I will make a donation to assist with the costs of establishing the group. That offer of support also stands for other communities on Townsville’s Northern Beaches.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL 100 YEAR CELEBRATIONS I recently attended the centenary celebrations for Rollingstone State School. Established in 1916 in the middle of World War 1, the school has been delivering education services to the Rollingstone community for 100 years. The local community and visitors turned out in big numbers to catch up with old friends, walk down memory lane and support the school.

Congratulations to the Principal, staff, the P&C and the anniversary sub-committee for putting so much effort into organising it. The students in the whole school choir entertained the crowd with a number of musical performances. Rollingstone State School is a great school and I'm proud to represent this strong local community. It was a great day enjoyed by all who attended.

TOWNSVILLE 'CITY DEAL' STARTS TO COME TOGETHER I recently attended a Property Council lunch in Townsville to learn more about the proposed 'City Deal', an initiative of the Federal LNP Government, to kick start the local economy. This “City Deal’ will be based on a platform of the new Stadium and Entertainment Centre project, the Townsville Eastern Access Corridor and the CBD Priority Development Area.

The planning for Townsville’s 'City Deal' - the first of its kind in Australia - is starting to come together. I'll be watching the development of the 'City Deal' closely with a view to how it will help jump start the economy across the whole City of Townsville, including Townsville's rapidly growing communities on the Northern Beaches within the Hinchinbrook electorate.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. The main point of interest this past month in our Community has been whether Kerrie C. has caught a fish yet. Can anyone elaborate?

What a busy month July turned out to be with lots of behind the scenes activities going on to ensure the Club runs smoothly and we provide good functions for our Members.

Speaking of good functions, the end of month Club BBQ held on 29 July has to be one of the best yet. For the few Club Members who were away on the night you missed a great function and we even welcomed a total of 17 guests and visitors which has to be a Club record. Once again Le Cooke Robert Pratt excelled in the food department and his pork dish had the excited throng of felicitous diners begging for more, more, more until there was no more, no more! Thanks Col Pace for his ever welcome contribution of delicious rissoles but we have heard on the rumour grape vine that Col takes all the ingredients to Gladys in hospital for her to do the cutting up and mixing in the jealously guarded Pace family secret herbs and spices. Thank to Dickie who did most of the setting up and to Therese Milliken and President Di who added the finer touches to the set up. Melissa Jones and Brooke Palmer deserve a special mention for their excellent effort with the raffle which was won by Doug Sharpe. Thanks to the wonderful Ladies upstairs serving the bar and to the Ladies who prepared the very popular salads. Last but not least, thank you, our Club Members for turning up as it is pleasing to see that a lot of hard work and effort put in by a few is appreciated by most of our Membership.

The renewal applications for membership are rolling in steadily but don’t forget that those of you who have not as yet rejoined are now unfinancial and therefore no longer Members so if you wish to continue to enjoy our great functions please, get your paperwork in to be a continuing Member of a great little Club. We welcome new members Les and Julie Griffin, John Wimbus and Debbie Lennox, Blair Kister and Lorraine Cock, Amy Lawler, Mark and Barbara Turley. Welcome to your new Club and we hope you have a long and happy time with us.

Gladys Pace remains on the sick list and we all pray for her speedy recovery. Happily Gladys is now home under the very watchful eye and care of Col. Unfortunately Club Stalwart Condo (Ron Condren) is again off colour but hopefully he will be back to his old self soon but the downside is then we will have to endure his golfing stories. Oh well…….

Upcoming Club events in September include the Club Balgal Beach Markets on Saturday 3 September which includes the Big Breakfast and two FREE CPR Awareness Sessions at 9.00 and 11 am. Your attendance at one of the FREE CPR Sessions is strongly encouraged as they could one day save a life. Remember we always need helpers to run the Big Breakfast so why not volunteer an hour or three of your time. On Friday 30 September our Club end of month BBQ will once again thrill and tantalize your taste buds. Come along to sample what Robert has in store for our eating pleasure this time. The BBQ is free for current financial members, visitors and guests are $15.00 per adult, school age children are of course free.

Winners of the Club Monthly Fishing Competition are, Senior Perry Jones 13.58 kg Mackeral, Junior Jack Jones 11.74 kg Mackeral and Mystery Bruce Woolard 1.6 kg Mangrove Jack. Congratulations and well done. Dan Dale will take a lot of beating next month considering the impressive haul he has weighed in at The Landing. That 19.2 kg Marlin will test the brag board.

Please note Parents that on Saturday 5 November at our Club Balgal Beach Markets there will be a FREE, yes FREE Kids First Aid Course conducted by staff of Black River Ambulance Station. The course is designed for school age children and will be run subject to the Ambulance Staff having no other higher priorities at the time. All parents in our Community and their school age children are urged to attend, you never know, it may be your life they save one day. Timings etc will be advised soon.

At the Club Balgal Beach Markets held on Saturday 6 August, Vice-President Graham again used the tongs and spatula with the finess and flair of that mad chef on the Muppet Show. Come to think of it, there is a resemblance in their appearance too. Di was ably assisted by Geoff and Vicki Fischer and Lurlene Sharpe while I supervised and liaised. Thank you all for volunteering your time. Considering that there was an Arts Festival at the Community Centre and the Italian Festival in Ingham on the same day, we did considerably better than we had hoped and we thank the local Community for their support.

Remember please, come hell or high water, the Balgal Beach Markets have always and will always be held on the first (1 st) Saturday of each month.

We have been advised by the organizers that the date for the Member for Hinchinbrook Fishing Challenge Presentation Dinner was deferred from the 20th August to the 3rd September and consequently the end date of the competition extended from 12 August to 6.00 pm on Friday 26 August. As stated previously, this is a great night out so make sure your name is on the list at The Landing. A courtesy bus WILL be provided. Don’t forget that if for some obscure reason you cannot get to The Landing, simply ring one of the wonderful and most helpful Ladies there and ask them to put your name on the list. However, importantly, please ring prior to 10.30 am before the daily stampede of customers begin.

I cannot believe that we have had not one of our members do anything in the past 3 or so months to warrant a mention in the Tale of Woe Award. Surely you have a story on a friend who stuffed up so please give me a ring on 0427240472 to relate their sad tale and, you can embellish it with half truths or even creditable fibs. If you don’t want to ring, slip an unsigned note in the Club’s letter box on the counter at The Landing while no one is watching.

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc WOW, What a month! Our regular Cooks Night Off at the Big 4 each Wednesday are becoming more popular with the grey nomads, they are thoroughly enjoying our food and entertainment. We have to thank Chris Crowe, the owner of the Big 4 for providing this marvellous opportunity.

We had a visit from our new District Governor, Lion Brian Hewett and his lovely wife Jan at our last dinner meeting, where he detailed his action plan and the direction that our club should take going forward.

The biggest event in August was the Rollingstone School Centenary Celebrations, this was a very successful family day enjoyed be one and all. There was plenty to see and do. A lot of the money raised will be donated to the school P&C. Thank you Rollingstone for your support.

The catering support we provided for the Southern Cross Charity Bike Ride at the show grounds was full on, however once again, our band of warriors handled the task well.

The final preparations are well under way for this year’s Pineapple Festival, our biggest event on the calendar. Our Lions and Leo’s will provide the majority of the food for the predicted very large crowd. This is shaping up to be the biggest festival ever and I hope Rollingstone community all come along and enjoy the festivities.

Well, that’s about it for this month’s report, apart from the All Blacks absolute pasting of the Wallabies.

R.S.L. NEWS

August has been a very busy month for the RSL. Vietnam Veterans’ Day was held on Thursday, 18th at the Memorial at Balgal Beach. Unfortunately Mick and I couldn’t attend as he had a medical appointment, which couldn’t be changed, despite our pleadings. Thank you to those people who attended. A special thank you to WO Jason Harton from 9 Transport SQN, who organised the Catafalque Party, and LT Tashna Anderson who was the guest speaker. I believe the soldiers present were quite young but did an admirable job in performing their tasks.

Thank you to the committee and members of the Rollingstone RSL for the work done to enable the service to occur. Ewan, Jan, Tony G, Dowie, Greg, Mick, Ashley and Jamo, all helped to make the day a success. Also a big thank you to Theresa for holding the fort back at the club and organising the food and refreshments following the service.

On Saturday 13th August the RSL were proud to sponsor the Vietnam Veterans’ Day Golf Game. This was a single stableford competition. The winners were Di Stephan for the ladies, with Sue Thompson as runner-up, and in the men’s division, our RSL member, Wayne McCarthy, was the winner, with Ken Dickenson as runner-up. A pleasant day was had by all. Di had a great day as she also won the Eagles Nest. A shot-gun start at 10:30 meant we all finished at around the same time and we then enjoyed a sausage sizzle.

On Sunday, August 14th, we held a QGM. There were 21 members present and we elected Greg Ryding and Dave Corta onto the RSL committee. Greg is a service member and Dave replaces Des Ward, who has moved to town, as a social member. We welcome them to the Rollingstone RSL Board and look forward to working with them to continue the role of the RSL in our area.

Saturday, 20th August was also an important day for the RSL as we assisted Rollingstone State School to celebrate 100 years. For a while now, Kacey (Miss C), principal of Rollingstone State School, has wanted to replace the old flag pole, as it was outdated. We have been working with her to assist with this task. As most of the schools now have 3 poles it was best for us to get the 3 at the same time. So after a year or so it was decided the 100 years celebration was something to aim for. The flags were raised at 12:15 to commemorate the relationship between Rollingstone State School and Rollingstone RSL. The great bond between the school and the local community clubs can be seen on the board placed by the Rollingstone Lions Club, underneath the official school noticeboard. Take a look when you next go to Roscos or visit the school.

A big thank you to Hut, Dowie and Greg for installing the flagpoles.

We are lucky to now have an RSL advocate in our area. Sue Hill, works through RSL QLD as an advocate for veterans in our region and is willing to come to Rollingstone to speak with those who may need assistance. Please contact us if you need assistance and we will arrange an appointment with Sue. We acquired three “Spirit Of Australia Awards” to present to members for supporting Rollingstone RSL and the community in general.

We chose the following personnel to receive an award: Sue von Wald, Kathy Girvan and Bob Zander. These people were chosen because: Sue has been one of the most dedicated advocates for this area. The Community Association and many of the groups established have come about through Sue’s determination. Thank you Sue! Kathy, as the founding Patron of Rollingstone RSL has been a wonderful support. Always willing to be there, initially in her capacity as local councillor, and now as co-patron with Sue Blom, Kathy always offers to assist and support the RSL. Bob Zander, the Chaplain who is always there, but wishes to remain the quiet achiever, and receive no acknowledgements at all. Bob has been with Rollingstone RSL virtually from the beginning and expects nothing. A bit like Brian Reinke who said to me one day when I complained about a terrible shot at golf : At least you are out here playing golf. There are many people sitting in wheelchairs who would love to be out here”.

Thank you Brian and Bob for making me see there are so many things to be thankful for and to appreciate being able to help others. Not only has Bob assisted the RSL, he has worked in the community and has been a wonderful support to the school. In the middle of summer Bob would be out there mowing and tidying to get the school grounds ready for another school year. Bob and Anne will be missed by many.

The “Spirit Of ANZACs” display is in town in September.

Our RSL has 20 places booked and we need to know numbers very soon. Date: Wednesday, 7th September, 10:30 am, at the Entertainment Centre, so please let us know if you would like to go.

Rollingstone & District Seniors There is a busy time coming up again, what with the Seniors week at Murray Stadium. Everyone is there to show and display their aged care wares, useful tools and those wonderful goodie bags. Takes you back to being a kid at the show.

Then there is the high light of the week, the Seniors luncheon put on by the Townsville City Council and they have promised that the bus WILL be here and on time!!! This is a day to meet up with old friends or make new ones and enjoy one’s self. (and it does not cost you).

The next on the list is the Seniors Games being held at the Community Centre on Sept 7th. We have invited various other senior clubs to join us in some fun so please come along and enjoy the day. It would be great if you could let Rhonda M know if you can make something for morning tea, much appreciated and bring your $$$ as having raffles too. You are never TOO old to have fun and join in, live life to the fullest. We get blasĂŠ and say another day but I went to a funeral today of a younger person and just remember life is for living, it goes so quicklyand never returns.

Then next on our list is THE Pineapple Festival in our paradise. Everyone should truly make the effort to get out to this and once again meet up with friends and just enjoy the day. The floats in the morning are well worth coming to have a look at and they tell me there will be way more stalls there than ever before. So shake a leg and come and support OUR community.

The Seniors are having a cake/plant/anything stall and any items will be greatly appreciated. I know there are some fabulous cooks out there so throw the pinnie on and whip up some yummy cakes, bikkies, savouries and slices. Mmmmm my mouth is watering already and I will definitely be in line to buy some.

This is the time when we can come and mingle with the younger generation in our paradise and do the meet and greet type of thing to say hello to everyone.

The day after, some of the seniors are off to Toowoomba. Boy, hope to have stories to tell when we return. The visit is coinciding with the Flower Festival down there so should be glorious, even cool weather wont dampen the spirits (just add coke).

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay In a recent TV programme I saw a group of people making moves to protect Tiger Cats in their area. Tiger Cats (Spotted-tailed Quolls) were in the Paluma/Taravale area during World War 2 as evidenced by this photo taken at the Taravale Timber Camp during the war. Both Tom Conners who lived at the camp at that time and Linda Venn (writer of the History of Paluma and surrounds, have this photo in their collections. It can also be seen by you in the albums at the History Exhibit at the Community Hall in Paluma on Tuesdays between 11;00 am and 1:00 pm. This species has not been seen here since. I am presuming that you know the difference between the Tiger Cat and the Native Cat. For some reason or another late Winter and Autumn is the time of year when the Short-nosed Bandicoots attack our lawns for food.

The whole lawn becomes pitted with holes where the bandicoots dig for insect larvae. Around the Rollingstone/Balgal area you have the Longnosed Bandicoot. Does it attack your lawns at any particular time of the year?

A few days ago I felt that earthquake reported on TV News. I’m sure many of you felt it too. It was also felt by people from Cairns to about Rockhampton. I was discussing this with friends afterwards and the subject of earthquakes and turbidity came up. I will follow up on this and give you an interesting set of facts about turbidite and turbidity currents in the next issue.

Reptiles will be coming out of hibernation soon and it is likely that those of you that have houses close to the forests will see these reptiles first. I live adjoining the rainforest and just occasionally during sunny periods in Winter some reptiles, such as the Water Skinks, will come out of their hibernation to bask in the sun for a while.

Paluma In the Clouds Les Hyland

Paluma Push The weather was kind to the Mountain Bike Riders on July 24th as, following the heavy rain of the 15th, 18th and 22nd it dried out and although the creeks were running the course was, for the most part, reasonably dry. From the operational point of view it went very smoothly - very few injuries - and the checkpoints were able to handle the close to 700 competitors. There were three courses again this year Competitive, Intermediate and Recreational and the three spaced starts reduced the bunching of riders. All in all it was one of the better years of this event.

Art Exhibition The annual Art exhibition will be held this year from Wednesday 21st to Tuesday 27th September in the Community Hall from 10.00 hrs to 14.30 hrs each day. If you would like to exhibit your work you should contact either Lynn Hyland (47737675 or lhyland@optusnet.com.au or Colwyn Campbell (47708559 or colwynmc@activ8.net.au) in the near future.

Entry is free and this is a great opportunity for budding artists to show, and possibly sell, their work to a wider audience.

Communications It is quite amazing how many people assume that Paluma has full mobile phone coverage whereas nothing could be further from the truth. From McClelland’s Lookout and Star Valley Lookout you can usually access the Coolbie and Towers Hill towers respectively but only a few phones can connect from anywhere in between. Equally there is no internet access except for a few businesses that have ADSL and residents that connect through the limited phone service. Since July all that is starting to change as satellite space has become available for remote area customers who can now have a dish fitted and connect to the NBN. Speaking personally, it is a boon to sit at the desk and check eMail and look up Wikipedia instead of driving 1km and trying to work on the tailgate of the car. Quite a number of the permanent residents have changed over, it is probably not as attractive to weekend occupants with very low usage but with plans for around $35/ month one can not say it is terribly expensive.

Having already enjoyed rugby league coaching from the NRL and soccer training from the Brisbane Roar, students at Mutarnee State School are excited about receiving some cricket tips from a Queensland Cricket representative over the next couple of weeks.

No doubt we’ll see those skills displayed in the playground as we hopefully identify the next big thing in cricket!

Two of our students were recently selected to compete at the Barnes’ Cup Athletics Event in Ingham. Congratulations go to both girls for the outstanding behaviour and effort displayed on the day. They both performed well, finishing 3 rd and 4th in the 800m.

Great job!

In addition to the above sporting opportunities experienced by our students, we also provide great opportunities in The Arts. This week, students will participate in the Art in a Suitcase program. An artist from the Perc Tucker Gallery in Townsville will come to share some amazing pieces of art demonstrating a particular theme. Students will then produce their own version of art. Their art will then be displayed in Townsville over the school holidays. Our students always look forward to these visits and enjoy them thoroughly.

Last week, our students in years 4 to 6 participated in the Crystal Creek Watch program. Students got to analyse living samples from the creek to ensure that native species are thriving. Water quality was also tested, and I’m pleased and proud to report that the water quality in Crystal Creek is outstanding. Programs like this help to ensure that our students take pride in their local area.

It is so good to find out that the word is getting out about our native wildlife!

We took a call the other week from a family in Mystic Sands who had found a young possum that had somehow fallen out of a pal m tree. The caller had wrapped the young joey up in a towel and had put it next to her skin to keep him warm. Yes, he is a little boy. His mother was up the palm tree, (rather strange dwelling for them) , and we could not coax her down. We do not know if she let the baby fall or if he fell himself as she was very under nourished and there was no feed in the vicinity. She had been able to go into neighbouring gardens to forage but dogs had arrived there which meant her food source was cut off. We returned with native tucker for her for several nights but she had left her tree. The people had not seen her earlier as we had asked them to let us know if she returned. Now mothers of native animals will do this type of thing, eject the baby if they have no way of feeding it or danger is imminent. They also won't breed if conditions are not favourable, something we human animals have not worked out yet. Anyway back to baby, he is doing extremely well in capable possum carer hands and is growing leaps and bounds.We want to take this opportunity to thank the kind family who took the time and effort calling us, looking after the little one until we could take him and for allowing us to interrupt their family time to check up on the mother. Bless you, you saved a life. It is so good to find out the word is getting out about our native wildlife.

Please, if it is safe to do so and you are able to, stop and check.

If you can't for whatever reason, please call a wildlife rescue in the area or someone who can assist.

For the sake of a few moments you could help prevent further suffering and distress to an injured animal, or save a life.

TODAYS YOUTH HAVING FUN!

Troupies is a youth group developed for the local children of Rollingstone and districts, all ages are welcome.

Troupies was formed by local parents under the banner of Rollingstone and District Community Association.

Our aim and vision is to provide local children with activities, crafts, sport, community involvement, entertainment and at all times FUN!

MYSTIC SANDS GOLF CLUB Hello Golfers, Another month has rolled around and lots of golf has been played, some good and some not so good ( I’m the not so good).

Just lately I have noticed some new faces around the club so please come and introduce yourselves to us if you would like to play this frustrating game that we all love to hate but always come back for seconds. If there are young children interested we have a juniors club with lessons on Saturday mornings. The cost is $2 and all the balls and clubs are supplied. We would like to see some new faces in the junior ranks. It keeps Brian Reinke young. Brian, along with some other stalwart people share their time to work with the young players.

Results for the last month along with mentioning other games that were played along the way.

Monthly Medal Results: Mens Div 1 Winner Darren Beavis with 68 . Picked up the prize, good on you Darren.

R/U Keith Ruddick with 69. Next time Keith, good job all the same.

Mens Div 2: Winner Ken Dickenson with 70. The putter must have been hot that day! Well done Ken R/U Bob Lloyd with 73. Good on you Bob, words fail me.

Mens Div 3: Winner Grahame Starkie with 67. Look out boys here he comes. Well done Starkie.

Ladies Div 1 Winner Maree King with 75. I have no idea how I won but good on me!

I would like to give a big thankyou to Rollingstone RSL for sponsoring a Saturday game known as Vietnam Veterans Day. It is good to know that we have good people in this district. The day went off very well and the prizes were worth putting in a big effort.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB Our mens club championships were completed during the last week with stalwart Michael Blake showing his true class and prevailing in all three events. Michael defeated Mal in the singles and teamed with Bruce in the pairs to win the main two events and had a walkover in the fours. Michael will represent our club in the district Champion of Champions and our congratulations and best wishes go with him.

Unfortunately , our bowling green is still out of action at this time and will be so for the next couple of weeks as Greenkeeper Dave struggles to overcome some persistent problems with the surface.

Those of us who look forward to our weekly Sunday morning game are really suffering at this time but we are at the mercy of the elements and must wait for the green to respond to the chemical treatments it is hopefully getting. While I know this is frustrating news, we can only hope that we will be back on the green in the next few weeks and getting our much needed `fix' of fun and fellowship.
