Digital Playbill for Annie Russell Theatre presents The Wolves

Page 1

Welcome! The Wolves, written by a dynamic and accomplished young playwright named Sarah DeLappe, has received widespread acclaim—it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2017—but it may be unfamiliar to you. The Wolves has been extensively produced around the country but this production at Rollins is a Central Florida premiere. In these chaotic times, it’s harder than ever to plan ahead, but: right now, our plan is to move back into the Annie this spring and to offer two socially distanced, reduced capacity productions. Here’s how we’ll complete the Annie Russell Theatre’s 88th season, a celebration of the incalculable contributions that women have made to American theater since the Annie opened its doors in 1931: In February we’ll produce Beth Lincks’ As It Is in Heaven, set in an all-female Shaker society in the 1830s. At once provocative and comic, Heaven considers the nature of belief, of community, and of good and evil. We produced Beth’s affecting Letters to Sala a few years back and her charming Last Train to Nibroc has become a staple at regional and academic theatres all over the United States. Beth is a Rollins alumna and will return to campus to direct her play. In April our season closer will highlight women’s influence on musical theatre with a walk through the most American theatre genre. Featuring selections from shows as diverse as Waitress, Shrek!, Secret Garden, Beautiful and many others, our students will highlight and celebrate women’s impact on the contemporary American musical. Theatre makers make theatre: it’s in our DNA. And we could produce shows and present them without audiences, in an empty Annie. But what’s the fun in that? Audiences provide the final, vital part of the equation. Thank you for being here, for your support of live theatre in the time of COVID. This summer, faced with the prospect of shutting down all productions for the year, my colleagues and I decided instead to reimagine the pandemic safety protocols as benefits not impediments. We opened the season with a pared back, fully masked show on the Annie stage alongside a pair of livestreamed productions. Now, we are thrilled to offer The Wolves under the stars on the beautiful Rollins campus.

Enjoy, Thomas Ouellette Producing Director Professor of Acting and Directing

A Message From The Director “It never gets easier, you just get better,” the team captain assures the new girl. After all, that’s what her dad always says. Grown-ups know, right? Despite the captain’s confidence, we begin to get the feeling that despite the funny gossip, the one-upmanship, and the endearing obsessions with Lord of the Rings and Disney World, that this pack of young women is starting to figure out that...people don’t necessarily get better just because they get older. The Wolves takes place on an indoor soccer field, with a turf floor that seems to stretch on forever. Yes, we are outside on a tennis court, but imagine if you will the perfect bubble of high school represented by the dome of a city sports arena. Your world has order, you know your place in the pack, and you have big plans for your future. Over a winter soccer season this carefully constructed shelter starts to break down. At first, it’s mostly curious: a new girl shows up, there’s a hole in the Air Dome, an annual birthday sleepover is canceled. And then the unthinkable happens, and we are left to question: how could this have happened? Who is at fault? Who should have done better? But with the team we are led to a place where we ask: are these even the right questions? They help us to see that the endless quest to assign blame and mete out justice does not make it easier, nor does it make us better. I am so grateful for the opportunity to present this production to you. As I’ve watched this incandescent group of actors train for the last month, I can say that—even standing six feet apart—live performance crackles with its familiar intensity. Your presence here lights the spark. You make us better. Thank you for coming.
