About me: Antoinette I’m an aspiring fashion designer

Your name ? Who are you ? But... really who are you ?

I am a person who lives in a continuous state of daydreaming; proud African descendant and shamelessly hyper-sensitive. REACH ME: antoinettendiayesow@ied. edu awkwardantoinette.tumblr. com (soon)

Feeling Blue “Feeling blue” is a short stop motion film where I portrayed myself. My goal was to express a feeling that I experience recurrently: “blueness”; in order to express myself. Although the human being doesn’t communicate sadness as often as it is felt, it is a feeling that coexists with the others, and that should be let out. That, and my almost incapability of demonstrating this feeling was my main motivation for this project. The short film starts with a few verses from a poem by Rupi Kaur, and it depicts myself being covered by the feeling “blue” which I portrayed with blue paint. It is also accompained by the music “eaux calmes” by Paul Michael Harris and David Weston.

“When the phrase ‘I’m sad’ becomes synonymous to ‘I won’t be okay’ you realize how much it hurt beginning to end [...]” - Rupi Kaur

Process

For the making of this skirt, the first thing to do was creating a pattern for a half circle skirt. Once the pattern is done and layed over the pvc/vinyl material, I cutted the pvc following the pattern. No pins were used for this step since I did not want to create unnecessary holes in my “fabricâ€?. Sewing pvc is a precarious thing to do. For that, I hand sewed the fabric using a large needle and regular white polyester thread. After assembling the waistband and the skirt the only thing left to do was to sew the zipper into the skirt and voilĂ !

The final step is to place the fresh flowers in the skirt. For that we need to cut our fresh flowers and maintain them well refrigerated and hydrated all along the process by spraying them with water.

Finally, using hot glue I placed the flowers in the skirt and maintain the piece in a cold and wet environment in order to preserve it as long as possible.

Indoor tent As a child I always dreamt of escaping to my very own refuge / sanctuary. Based on that dream I created an indoor tent to escape from the chaotic life of adulthood and embrace our inner child.

This piece of furniture was made out of chiffon fabric, bamboo sticks and a felt base. The diaphanous characteristic of the fabric and the strong aspect of the bamboo sticks create the perfect contrast.

A is for Antoinette “The letter project” is an assignment where we had to choose a letter and make it into a 3D piece using whatever materials we desired. The inspiration for this project came from a previous project: the indoor tent. The materials used for this project are bamboo sticks and a fabric named “pagne tissé” (woven cloth), which is popular for making clothes in Sub-Saharan African regions. This one particularly comes from Sénégal.

Bopp motifs Bopp motifs is a textile design project inspired by the unsual hairstyles of the Fulani tribe located in various countries of West Africa. Fulani hairstyles are elaborated and unique pieces that follow specific patterns. By selecting specific hairstyles, I created five textile patterns and each one is associated to a Fulani hairstyle.
