his issue marks the 2nd anniversary of Romance Travel Magazine. We have stayed true to our mission to encourage our readers to create memorable romantic moments, honeymoons, vow renewals, and other special romance occasions in travel locations throughout the world.
We believe travel can improve your relationships and enhance your love life. With the pressures of everyday life upon us, we need to reserve some special time with our sweethearts to promote good mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Nothing can enhance your love life better than a little romance. It’s true what they say, taking a vacation together is a wonderful way to get to know someone better. Quality time together is essential for keeping the romance alive in a relationship. Have you been too busy with the business of life and feel a little disconnected from one another? If so, then a romantic getaway is just what the doctor ordered—the love doctor, that is. Keeping love alive requires time, attention, and the willingness to keep things fresh and learn how to constantly reconnect. ROMANTIC MOMENTS IN CENTRAL ECUADOR By Lana Orndorff
L
ast December, my husband, Zac, and I went on an escorted trip to the central region of Ecuador, from Quito, to the Andes, to the Amazon and back. Inspired to discover a new country and culture, and to escape the Chicago winter of our hometown, we chose Ecuador based on its equatorial location and the fact that we could explore a new country together. For us, creating memories and having adventures are great opportunities for romance. Ecuador’s serene jungles and mountains may have been the perfect places for a little one-onone-time with my love; however, as planning the details of a worthwhile exploratory trip to a new country can be frustrating–and frustration is the opposite of romance–we decided to go on a guided trip with 33 other people. Although it wasn’t a week of 100% romance, like a trip to a Caribbean all-inclusive resort may have been, Zac and I were wonderfully surprised to find some beautiful places to escape the group and enjoy some much needed romance. Some of the romantic highlights of the trip included incredibly hospitable hotels, elegant dinners, and unique nature experiences.
4 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
Hotels
Cabañas del Lago
One of the first places where we really got to experience some romance was Cabañas del Lago, a hotel located right on San Pablo Lake and surrounded by the beautiful green mountains of the Andes. Each room was simply decorated, with the central focus being a wood-burning fireplace. After an incredible dinner of expertly cooked lemon pepper fish, followed by a creamy panna cotta dessert, we walked into our room to find that our fireplace had already been lit. We immediately noticed that the hotel’s turndown service also included hot water bottles in our bed and festive gingerbread men placed on the pillows. The warmth of the room on a cool winter night created by the hotel staff was the perfect ambiance for enjoying each other’s company. If that wasn’t enough, our romantic stay at Cabañas del Lago ended with a freshly prepared breakfast in an open air restaurant by the lake.
Hacienda Manteles
A couple nights later, we ended up staying in another tranquil spot that would be perfect for any couple looking for romance in the region. The Hacienda Manteles, a family-run estate located at the top of a lush, green mountain, is set far away from the beaten path with breathtaking views and an inescapable serenity. Although it was not our honeymoon, Zac and I were given one of several newly built honeymoon suites. Unlike the other guest rooms, the honeymoon suites were separated from the main house, which used to be a fully functioning family farm. Each suite had a floor-to-ceiling glass window facing east out to a private mountainside with a view of Tungurahua Volcano. The Hacienda served freshly made goat cheese before dinner, followed by a perfect three-course meal, including tender steak filets and an Ecuadorian chocolate cake paired with a bold red wine imported from Chile. That evening we fell asleep with the shades up, so that the sun could be our wake-up call the next morning.
Nature
Rose Farm, Ecuador
Red roses are the ultimate symbol of romance, so taking a tour of this plantation was a great setting for us to enjoy some time together and learn something new about the flower Zac had given me on several special occasions. The rose plantation also led to an extra special romantic moment for another couple on our tour. Although the plantation usually does not sell the roses directly, this couple was celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary on that day and our tour guide was able to convince them to sell the husband some roses to present to his wife while we ate lunch that afternoon.
Hiking in the Amazon
Exploring less trafficked areas of nature is always an exciting experience, especially in the Amazon Rainforest. At the Misicocha Private Nature Reserve, we chose to do a long hike and got to know a little more about one of the world’s most complex ecosystems while helping each other over rocks and tree branches.

El Pailon del Diablo Waterfall
This incredible waterfall allows visitors to get underneath the cascading water. We snuck in a kiss and snapped a picture under this beautiful example of Ecuadorian natural beauty. Zac and I came back to Chicago 8 days later with fond memories of kind people, incredible nature, beautiful hotels, delicious food, and a few special romantic moments. A large tour group may hinder romance at times, but it did allow us to find some wonderfully romantic and very local places we would not have found on our own as tourists. Also, we learned a few valuable lessons about romance that we hadn’t intended. This trip taught us, first of all, that romance can be found anywhere and under any circumstances, as long as you travel with your love. And second, romance sometimes, when not directly available, needs to be sought, and that can be part of the fun. ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE 5
Romantic By Lana Orndorff
Picture this: It’s a cool winter afternoon. A gentle dusting of snow on the ground creates the perfect excuse for you and your love to stay close to each other– not that you need one. You are strolling hand-in-hand along a beautiful river, anticipating the romantic gourmet dinner you are about to enjoy, and discussing your favorite finds at one of the several museums you visited earlier that day. You two stop by a famous national monument and enjoy the orange kiss of sunset on the horizon as you share your own sweet kiss. If that fits into your idea of a perfect romantic adventure, then Washington, D.C. should be the next destination on your list for a fun-filled, intimate trip for you and your beloved. If you’ve never been to Washington, D.C., I know what you might be thinking. But, forget the politics. Washington, D.C. is a city full of history, food, and beauty that is bursting with romance. Like many big cities around the world, D.C. has incredible views, lights, fine dining, and elegant hotels that are easy to come by. This capital city also has many distinct neighborhoods, including (but certainly not limited to) Georgetown, Downtown, and Dupont Circle, which all have a variety of romantic options unique to D.C. 6 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Downtown
Downtown Washington, D.C. is all about the history and those iconic images that spring to mind when you think of the U.S. capital. During the cold winter months, you may not be so keen on wandering through downtown looking at the outdoor monuments, although you should definitely pass by for some quick glances. Museums are the perfect winter activity, and D.C. is not short on fabulous–and often free–ones. Spend the day downtown in one of the many famous national museums that focus on arts, history, air, and space–whatever you and your love enjoy most. After a long day of exploring, check in to the historic Jefferson Hotel to continue the romance and relax with a couples massage at the hotel’s luxury spa, The Petite Spa. Stay in the Martha Jefferson
Suite to take in the beautiful city lights and views from the privacy of your own hotel room. As for dining options, you are in luck! The Jefferson Hotel also hosts several of the city’s finest restaurants, so on these chilly, winter nights, you and your love won’t even have to worry about leaving the building for delicious food. For dinner, try Plume, a Forbes 5-Star rated restaurant that boasts an expansive wine list and delicious tasting menu.
Dupont Circle
For more modern and artsy adventures with your love in the city, head to Dupont Circle. Wander through small, local galleries, such as Anderson House and The Phillips Collection, looking at oneof-a-kind art collections, vastly different from those you can see in the national galleries. Continue to one of the many
chic restaurants in the neighborhood, like Boqueria, located on M Street, to share some tapas with your love and a bottle of bold, red Spanish wine. Or, if you are in the mood for Italian, head to Siroc on 15th Street between North I Street and North K Street. The romantic ambiance of the restaurant, created by the cold winter outside and candle lit tables inside, is sure to bring the two of you closer together. Siroc’s hand-rolled gnocchi is not to be missed. To complete the romance in Dupont Circle, Hotel Rouge is the place to stay. Contemporarily designed with bold reds and pop art in the lobby and the rooms, Hotel Rogue has a “Red Hot Romance Package,” which includes a deluxe guest room and a bottle of sparkling wine that will make you forget the low temperatures outside.
Georgetown
Finally, when you think about Georgetown, think about water. Although you might want to wait for spring or summer to visit this neighborhood, it can’t hurt to start thinking about warmer weather and the fun you will have when outdoor temperatures start to rise. Georgetown, one of the few D.C. neighborhoods situated along the Potomac River, is perfect for any couple who loves romance by the river. Start your afternoon out with a picnic for two at Georgetown Waterfront Park, where you can enjoy peaceful waterfront views and gardens. Later, take a sunset cruise on D.C. Cruises, which leaves from Georgetown, where you can enjoy some happy hour drinks and a tour of the national monuments
with the one you love. To finish off a waterfront Georgetown date, head to the Washington Harbour. While the Harbour boasts many fine restaurants, Fiola Mare is one of the most elegant. This cozy seafood restaurant will perfectly complement your romantic day on the waterfront. Try one of their famous, hand-crafted cocktails, like the Victoria, which is made with whiskey, lemon juice, plum juice, and star anise syrup, paired with the Seafood Charcuterie Board, for a one-of-a-kind meal. Lana Orndorff is a travel-loving writer who has experienced beautiful parts of the world. Nice, France
8 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
By Dusty Fox
France is known by many as one of the most romantic destinations in the world. If you and your sweetie have been thinking about places where you can get away from it all, don’t overlook Nice, France’s fifth largest city and perhaps its most romantic. With its perfect Mediterranean climate and a charming atmosphere often reserved for much smaller towns, that feeling of relaxation you’re both longing for will come naturally and easily here. There’s no wrong way to vacation in Nice, whether you’re hoping to take a different tour every day or simply wander around the city, exploring hidden passageways and eating your way through nearly unmarked restaurants. Here are some favorite things to do and places to visit during a Nice getaway:
Food & Drink
Coté Marais The cozy setup at Coté Marais will invite you and your sweetie to settle in for an evening of storytelling, laughter, and plenty of food and wine. Nestled on a buzzing little street in the old town, the atmosphere is perfectly quaint yet upscale enough to ensure you two will feel that you’re out for a special evening together.
Oliviera The kind owners of Oliviera will help you embrace the slower pace of Italian life as they lovingly prepare and serve your multi-course meal. You and your sweetie will have hours to enjoy each culinary treat that arrives throughout your visit, as tables are reserved for the whole evening. Perhaps striking up a conversation with diners at a neighboring table, and most definitely chatting it up with the staff, friendliness and warmth exudes from this casual, yet elegant eatery. The star of the show is their collection of freshly made olive oils, which are paired splendidly with the food and a fantastic wine selection. Aux Petits Plaisers You won’t soon forget a meal at Aux Petits Plaisers, where every course is presented in photo-worthy fashion. A small menu of meticulously prepared dishes is more than enough to satisfy cravings for unique French cuisine. You’ll find a nice blend of locals and fellow travelers enjoying this restaurant, which sits about 20 minutes outside the town center.
Activities
Walking Food Tour If you’re like most of us, you’ll likely admit that one of the things you’re most excited about doing while in France is eating more than
your fair share of the local cuisine. And a great way to sample a wide variety of locally grown and produced treats is by joining in a food tour with your sweetie. Not only will you get to try goodies of the sweet and salty varieties, plus your fair share of libations, but you’ll also get to meet and make friends with other visitors to the region. Cours Saleya Market While this eclectic street market is known for its impressive selection of flowers offered up daily, vendors display all kinds of goods, from fresh fruits and cheeses to antiques. Visit during the afternoon and you’ll catch artists painting the street’s busy scene under the sunset and watch as the space transforms into a busy dining hot spot filled with cafe tables and chairs. Chauffeured Bike Tour La Caveleta eco tours are a great way to get to see the city in a more personalized way with your sweetie. The two of you share a cozy back seat while your tour guide peddles you past major attractions, monuments, and vistas, pointing out city highlights and giving you plenty of opportunities to get pictures.
Lodging
Hotel La Perouse While it’s tough to choose the best feature at this beautiful, centrally located hotel, the private terraces are certainly a contender. Overlooking the city, sea, and neighboring vegetation-covered cliff, there simply isn’t a bad view from any lookout point. The elegantly appointed rooms, bathrooms, and balconies create the perfect atmosphere to lock yourselves in and escape from the world for a few days. Villa l’Aimee The English speaking
owner Toni is more than a hostess at this comfortable B&B. She’s known for helping guests with all the details of their getaway, offering suggestions for local eateries and attractions and ensuring you feel welcome.
Each room has its own personality and features, like writing desks and French doors that open to a small balcony, so choose one that you know you and your sweetie will really enjoy. The B&B is located in a residential neighborhood, so as you relax on the patio, you may even find yourselves daydreaming about leaving your hurried U.S. life behind and moving to Nice.
Hotel le Petit Palais Its location on a hill in the Cimiez region means you’ll be away from the noise and congestion of Nice’s famed waterfront while staying at this lovely hotel. The 15-minute walk to and from town may even help you burn a few calories–a good thing given the large volumes of food and wine you’re sure to be enjoying while in Nice! The hotel features a small pool and patio area, and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bar setup is perfect for afternoon drinks without presenting the threat of a loud late night crowd. HARMFUL HABITS THAT ARE KILLING THE ROMANCE AND HOW TO GET IT BACK By Carmen Perez
3 Harmful Habits that are Killing the Romance 1. You don’t disconnect. There are a lot of things in this world screaming for your attention. Because of this, we spend all of our time on the things that scream the loudest, which are rarely the things that truly matter.
Connection. It's one of the 6 human needs. Study after study proves that people love to connect. Actually, a more accurate statement would be that beings love to connect. But, for the purposes of this article, I'll stick to people...mainly people like you and me. When we are connected, we live longer and happier. That's awesome, right? So, I ask you, how connected are you to the people you love? Do you tell them that you love them while completely engaged and present? Do you share the moments in your day that made you laugh so hard you cried? Do you pay more attention to your beloved than the TV or mobile phone? If you answered “no” to any of these, it’s time to take a look at the harmful habits that may not be serving you in your relationship.
You must disconnect from the chaos and connect to the peace, so you can be thoughtful in your actions and words. You must find ways to cope with your stress and create the quiet your mind needs to process the day, and get present, so you can be fully engaged when and where it matters most.
2. You don’t communicate. Let me explain, because I am sure you are talking enough, but are you communicating? Are you sharing the good and the bad? Are you supporting and loving? Are you open and willing to hear another point of view? Oftentimes, we don’t discuss the important things. You always have a choice about what you focus on. When you are calm, it’s easier to focus on the positive. Leave the complaining and drama at the door. Don’t allow it to poison your relationship or household. I know it’s not all good, and sometimes you have to say the things that are hard to say. When you do so, do it with love. Have patience with your beloved, and deliver your message from a loving place. If you cannot speak calmly, then don’t. Wait until you can. Remember to treat those you love with the respect and honor you want to receive. I firmly believe our daily chaos leads us to be nicer to strangers than we are to our families. Think about it. If our husbands ask us where the salt is for the 1,000th time, we snap. If our children ask us where their socks are, we snap. We huff and puff when we need help, but we don’t ask for it. “They should know...” we think to ourselves. It’s time to take responsibility for creating the environment you want to experience and live in. If you serve as the role model, everyone around you will do the same.
3. You don’t tell the truth. Please understand, I don’t mean that you don’t tell the truth intentionally, because I know that’s not the case. Stick with me for a minute… You don’t tell the truth about the extra spending you do. You don’t tell the truth about your weight. You don’t tell the truth about hurt feelings. You don’t tell the truth about why you don’t want to have sex. Instead, you lie. Don’t take this personally–we have all been there. You are not alone.
10 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
Sometimes we hide the bags in the closet. Sometimes we shave 5 or 10 pounds off or go down a dress size when discussing our weight. Sometimes we pretend we are asleep so we won’t engage in sex. Be honest about how you feel and who you are–always. It is good to be considerate for those you love, but never change who you are. Share how you are feeling and know you will be supported. Being honest with your beloved honors your relationship. Lying to avoid an argument creates divide. And if you tell small white lies, where does it end to cover them up? Each of these harmful habits creates disconnect, the complete opposite of the connection we desire. I have been with my husband since I was 14 years old. We have been together for 31 years, and we have experienced every single one of these habits. No, things haven’t always been, nor will they always be, paradise. What matters is that we have the same vision of what we want our lives to be like, and we grow, accept, and forgive one another. We share unconditional love, even during the rough times. There are a few things that have made the difference between making it and breaking it in our marriage.
3 New Habits to Cultivate to Bring the Romance Back 1. Disconnect to connect. Every week, I make it a priority to have a date with my husband. I also plan a long weekend every 3 months or so, and at least one weeklong vacation every year. This time is just for us to relax, connect, and experience new things together.
2. Create time to talk. It’s never going to happen if you don’t plan time to talk. Dedicate
a 15-minute conversation each day to just catching up. If you have a really busy life, make more time for this. Communication is key in keeping the connection. I take a look at the schedule and pencil in a reminder to have a conversation when I know my beloved will be relaxed and ready to engage.
3. Honor your relationship and self by being honest. In life, it’s important that we honor our word, which is to honor ourselves. I find that when we demand more of ourselves through our authentic hearts, those around us do the same. As the Wellbeing Messenger, I wholeheartedly believe in the power of healing through travel. I believe travel does save lives– and relationships, too. A study done by the U.S. Travel Association cited, “Women who take more vacations are more satisfied with their marriages. It seems women feel more romantic while they are on vacation.” Did you know that? And 80% of leisure travelers consider vacations very important to their wellbeing. It’s also a well known fact that travel improves sleep disorders and high blood pressure, and it has even been known to have a positive effect on those with Parkinson’s and those who experience seizures. I often tell my private coaching clients that when things are getting rough in their relationship or business, it’s time to get away with their beloved and...disconnect to reconnect. Is it time for you to do the same? Carmen Perez is a Lifestyle Expert and Mentor for Entrepreneurs, an Inbound Marketing Consultant, and the creator of www.EffortlessLivingOnline.

RIORIODE JANEIRO DE JANEIRO Romantic Highlights of
By Nathalie Aucutt
Sunshine, beaches, samba, and caipirinhas–Rio de Janeiro sizzles from sun up to sun down. Different from other beach-fronted cities around the world, Rio has a style all its own and an intoxicating atmosphere that you just can’t resist. Its mind-blowing setting, where jungle meets ocean in a crescendo of color, flavor, and passion, will leave a lasting impression. Be prepared to be seduced by the endless fun and sensational views this South American gem has to offer. If you like to dance, then all the better. Rio is alive with a festival spirit that reminds you what life is all about, making it the ideal location for romance. Its excellent air-conditioned metro system is also simple to use, making the city’s many attractions easy to reach. So turn up the volume, and get inspired with our romantic highlights of Rio De Janeiro!
Take in sunset at Sugar Loaf
Devour coffee and cakes at Confeitaria Colombo
Raise your heart rates with a trip to Sugar Loaf Mountain in the late afternoon, just in time to catch sunset from this most spectacular view point. Catch the cable car and relax as you take in the city, ocean, beaches, and jungle-clad hills all around you. As one of the city’s most recognized landmarks, this is a truly unforgettable experience to enjoy together.
Once visited by the Queen of England, this Belle Epoque landmark, in the heart of Rio’s historic center, has been serving fine food and drinks since the early 1890s. A well preserved example of Rio’s cosmopolitan history, Confeitaria Colombo is adorned with twinkling chandeliers, ornate mirrors, and glass cabinets filled with vintage treasures. This romantic setting is an indulgent escape from the tropical heat and an ideal stop on a sightseeing tour of the old town. Be sure to share some of their famous sweet pastries.
Soak up the sun on Ipanema beach The tropical heat makes a day on the beach a must. Ipanema is as chic as you imagine it to be, and it’s an ideal spot to relax and watch the beautiful people go by. It’s also close to some great bars and restaurants where you can grab delicious local food after your day of sun, sand, and sea.
Let Rio’s most famous landmark take your breath away When you think of Rio, the image of the Christ the Redeemer statue is the image that immediately springs to mind. The train journey to this landmark is beautifully romantic in itself. With a samba band playing the country’s unofficial national anthem, Más Que Nada, as you whizz through the jungle on the way to the top, the scene is set for an exhilarating experience. At the top, panoramic views stretch way beyond the city and across the Atlantic jungle; it’s a magical way to spend your morning.
Explore bohemian Santa Teresa With its friendly atmosphere and delightful bars full of antique charm, Santa Teresa is a hilly, cobblestone neighborhood, characterized by painted colonial buildings and enticing outdoor eateries. It’s a wonderfully romantic setting that attracts artists and lovers from around the world, and its views over the city make for a great day trip out of the busy streets below.
12 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
Indulge in a secluded rooftop room for two If you’re looking to get away from the party and take time out with your partner, a room at Quinta Azul Boutique Pousada in Santa Teresa could be just what you need. With its private terrace and rooftop hot tub, the deluxe room is the epitome of rest and recuperation in Rio. The Inn’s fresh breakfast is second to none. If you’re lucky, monkeys will join you in the mornings as you take in the pretty hilltop vista.
Taste the local spirit together No trip to Rio de Janeiro is complete without at least one caipirinha. These deliciously potent cocktails are made by adding a squeeze of lime and a scoop of sugar to the local spirit, Cachaça. That’s it. This is best served from a local vendor on the side of Ipanema beach as the sky turns pink.
I recommend spending at least 3 days in Rio de Janeiro to ensure you get to enjoy a little bit of everything. Whatever you and your loved one choose to do, you can be sure it will linger in your memory bank long after you leave.

Budapest, Hungary
—An Undervalued European Destination By Jessica Ladipo

veryone dreams of walking hand-in-hand down the Seine River, but there are tons of hidden gems in Europe that offer all the romance and history of Paris without the lines and price tag! Budapest is an undervalued romantic destination that should be on your radar.
Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is often referred to as the “Paris of the East.” It is located in the central northern part of Hungary and is the country’s capital and largest city. The Danube River runs through the center of the city and divides Buda on one side from Pest on the other side. This bustling city of 1.7 million residents features elegant 19th century architecture; sweeping, beautiful, romantic views over the banks of the Danube River; and plenty of UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Buda Castle Quarter, the Hungarian Parliament, Andrassy Avenue, Heroes’ Square, and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second oldest railway in the world. The city’s many world-class museums, island parks, great restaurants, cafes, and cool, stylish shops featuring homegrown designs, further provide visitors unique travel experiences while being very affordable! (Hungary is not currently on the Euro, making it very cheap for foreigners.)

Couples are sure to delight in romantic sunset strolls on the moonlit river embankment. In particular, the Danube Promenade, which extends along the banks of the Danube from the historic Széchenyi Chain Bridge to the modern Elizabeth (Erzsébet) Bridge in Pest, offers breathtaking views of the bridges’ night lights dancing in the river, silhouette of the Buda Castle (Royal Palace), the Hungarian Parliament, and the turrets and towers of the churches along the river. On the Buda side of Budapest, the romantic Fisherman’s Bastion (on the Castle Hill) with its fairytale-like architecture is a must-see, as it provides one of the best views of the Danube River and a spectacular panorama of Pest across the river. I recommend having lunch or dinner at upscale Fisherman’s Bastion Restaurant, which offers great Hungarian cuisine and terraces with gorgeous panoramic views of the city. A river cruise on the Danube at night is yet another way romantic couples can enjoy stunning views of this charming city. Budapest is perhaps most famous for its thermal baths and is widely cited as “the spa capital of Europe.” The city has an abundance of

Indeed, the variety of bathhouses to choose from is impressive, ranging from traditional Turkish baths dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, to Art Nouveau and modern spas. Budapest’s most famous spa, Széchenyi Baths, has 15 indoor baths and 3 outdoor pools and is the largest spa complex in Europe. Through August, you’ll enjoy nice daytime temperatures and cool summer nights, perfect for romantic dinners on impressive terraces of the city’s restaurants, romantic walks, the numerous summer concerts, fairs, etc. While September typically affords somewhat cooler weather, there are fewer tourists and still plenty to enjoy, including beer and wine festivals, such as the Budapest International Wine Festival, along with gourmet food festivals like the Buda Castle Chocolate Festival. There’s so much to experience in Budapest in order to fully appreciate all of its unique pleasures! The following is a list of Must-Sees and Must-Dos in Budapest, Hungary:

• Grab a drink at a ruin pub. These “ruin pubs” are located in abandoned buildings in the city and are very popular nightlife spots. Szimpla Kert is the oldest and most famous ruin pub.
So, if you want great architecture, culture, romance, shopping, nightlife, and more, and all at a very reasonable price, give Budapest a closer look.

WINEMAN DERRICK WESTBROOK CEO, THE WINEMEN AND SOMMELIER By Donna Beasley At age 22, while attending the University of Alabama Birmingham, Derrick participated in an independent study in which he created a small business entrepreneurial internship with Lovoy’s Restaurant. This is where he received his introduction to wine and business development. During his time at Lovoy’s Italian Restaurant, he experienced the expansion and evolution of the restaurant’s artisan wine & spirits selection. I met Derrick at a business building seminar in Chicago and was impressed with his passion for wine. RTM: How did you get interested in wine? When I was going off to college, a gentleman told me to get a job in a restaurant because, ‘I’d never be hungry and would always have some money in my pocket.’ My first job as a server was at Lavoy’s Italian Restaurant. They were actually in the process of changing their wines, so I got the chance to try some new things. I fell in love with the process, the drinking of wine, and what you can get out of grape juice. RTM: Why did you start your business, The Winemen? While I was working in Chicago at the winery, we did wine tastings. During those events, people really enjoyed our process and our charm. People started asking us to do it at their homes. It was really unstructured–we were just having fun. We were being attendants and sharing with people things they didn’t know about the wines in an environment that was safe and warm. Once it expanded beyond friends and family, my partner Dexter West and I thought maybe we can make some money doing this and thus, The Winemen was born. RTM: How many wines are generally in a tasting? We do about 10 wines, but can customize the sampling for the client. I like to do 10 because it gives me an opportunity to try a lot of styles. The best part is that you get to learn so much. A person will wake up the next day and realize they have all this knowledge about wine with the handouts we provide. RTM: What do you consider the most versatile wine? For me, sparkling wine or Champagne is

the most versatile. Most people think it’s just for celebrations, but it’s great before dinner because it cleans your pallet and kick-starts your appetite. And it’s great after dinner as an ending wine. It doesn’t have to be heavy, you can have it summer or winter, and it goes with just about any food. And what is more romantic than a glass with bubbles in it?
can go for free. Ask questions, and don’t be apprehensive about purchasing wine. Step out of your comfort zone and buy a bottle of wine you like and a bottle you’re unsure of. You’re not going to get it right every time. Be adventurous.
RTM: What do you feel is the relationship between wine and food?
These are my 3 tips for newbies:
When I think about wine and food they become synonymous. Both are wonderful by themselves, but once you put the two together it’s like two beautiful dance partners. Wine is designed to enhance the food and bring out the subtle flavors. It’s just like a great relationship–where one person may be lacking in some aspect, the other person provides balance. If a dish is too buttery, for instance, the acid of the wine can cut through that and make it more palatable and balance out the flavors.
RTM: What tips can you give for purchasing wine? 1. I like to go with what I like. If it’s a certain wine or brand you like, stick in that family. 2. Ask questions of the sommelier in the restaurant or store. They want to help you find a wine you’ll enjoy. 3. Don’t try to blow the budget. There are a lot of great wines under $25 and the quality is so good you can’t tell how much the wine cost.
RTM: What is a good food and wine combination for a romantic dinner for two? I am a pescatarian, so I mostly eat seafood. So, for me, a couple of tuna steaks paired with a light red wine or pinot noir is my go-to. Tuna steaks can be heavy, depending on how you cook them. I like the meal to be hearty–to last through the evening, but light enough that I don’t feel stuffed. A light red wine with a light fish dish will work wonderfully well together. RTM: How can someone get started? In most major cities that are many opportunities for wine tastings at restaurants, liquor stores, and grocery stores. Go and try as much wine as possible, especially when you

With little stalls nestled around the incredible Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings, the feeling here during Advent and Christmas is really quite unique. Traditionally served with pepparkator (thin ginger cookies), this tipple is a great drink to round off an evening skating on the ice rink or wandering around the red wooden market stalls together. Wherever you visit in Europe, there will be a fabulous Christmas market to delight and entertain you during this magical season.

Protecting Your
Relationship
Against Money Problems By Joe Jones
W
hat is the one thing that constantly threatens all relationships? Is it infidelity? Is it mistrust? How about boredom or loneliness? Yes, those are all valid reasons that many people choose to end their relationships, but they’re not the biggest reason. The most common reason is money. Greenbacks, loot, dollars, cheddar...no matter your term, money is the main reason for breakups.
Wives have gone on shopping sprees without informing their husbands. Husbands have visited the horse tracks and gambled on the odds-on favorite, without even thinking of paying the mortgage. Girlfriends have dumped their boyfriends because they never have it. Boyfriends have dumped girlfriends because they want too much of it. Couples start off their New Years’ deeply in debt because of Christmas spending, and start fighting. To say that money is trouble may be understating things just a bit. Money is a dangerous thing in a relationship. You have to constantly watch it and frequently alter your behaviors to accommodate it. It’s like constantly going to the doctor for the same problem. After finding a solution to the issue, things change and you’re forced to readjust. Too much of it, and it can open the door to reckless spending and bad habits. Not enough of it, and it can cause anger, frustration, and fights. So how do you keep money from destroying your relationship? To keep money from tearing down your house is difficult to master, but it can be done. Follow these steps:
1. Communication: The first thing you need to do is have complete financial disclosure with your significant other. Talk to them about all of your bills and what your expectations are in your dayto-day money management. Men, do not hide the extra $69.99 you need for that video game. Tell her about it. Women, do not hide that extra $120 for your trip to the salon. Tell him about it. The both of you can’t properly establish a budget if you don’t know what bills and habits the other person has. 2. Set up 4 accounts: If you’re married or are living together, you should probably set up 4 accounts. Each of you should have your own individual
22 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
account. You can utilize these accounts for whatever personal needs you may have. You don’t really have to communicate anything for those needs because the account is yours. Next you need to create 1 joint checking and 1 joint savings account. These accounts should be utilized for paying household bills and saving for the future. Agree upon who will be responsible for paying certain bills. 3. Set up direct deposits: The two of you need to set up direct deposits from your employers to go to the established accounts. You can set up agreed upon contribution amounts for each account, keeping in
mind who will cover specific household expenses and providing room for you to maneuver on a personal level. 4. Do not violate the agreement: Once you have an agreed upon system, do not deviate from that system. It is a system that you have established out of trust and tough negotiations. Any unknown changes to that system that you initiate without informing your partner will break down trust. 5. Revisit your financial situation frequently: Making an agreement in 2005 and expecting someone to live by that same agreement in 2015 is crazy. There are so many things that can change in a
person’s financial situation, and they often change monthly. Have a meeting with your significant other to review financial positions and make changes to those positions only as needed. Dealing with money is a tough thing. But by listening, understanding, making a plan, and sticking to that plan, you can solve most of your problems. Let’s just hope the economy holds firm and doesn’t throw you a curve. Do you have relationship problems and need advice? Visit us at http://kissymistinterracial.blogspot.com/.

journey on the famous Route 66 is worthy of a spot on any road trippin’ couples’ bucket list. With scorching summer temperatures behind us and fall in the air, what better time to head out on the open road than now? Check out these great stops that span one of America’s most famous highways, and see which stop sounds the most fun to include in your trip. But don’t overthink things–just grab your camera and your sweetheart and let the fun times begin! Wigwam Motel in San Bernardino, California - This motel doesn’t look anything like your average chain hotel. Instead, oversized teepees are scattered throughout the property–each with its own bedroom and bathroom combo inside. Is this place modern and luxurious? Nope. But if you’re looking for a kitschy spot that lands on just about every “must see” list for Route 66, you’ll definitely want to spend a night here!
24 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE
Delgadillo’s Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman, Arizona - Built in 1953 out of scrap lumber, Delgadillo’s remains as, shall we say, “humble” as it was 60 years ago. Brightly colored décor, mismatched chairs, and an impressive collection of stickers, signs, and bumper plates that date back decades are a few of the visual highlights you’ll get to take in while visiting. Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico - The giant glowing neon light out front is a good indicator that you’ll be stepping back in time at this iconic, well maintained motel. Attached carports are painted with fun spirited murals, and each room has its own vintage features and period-style furniture. Guests are known to gather up in the courtyard area and toast s’mores while swapping stories. Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma - A beloved movie star, journalist, and all around “good guy” of yesteryear, Will Rogers’ most famous quote is “I never met a man I didn’t like.” This beautiful property details his life as an on- and off-
screen cowboy and business man who was known for making friends everywhere he went. This beautiful museum makes for a great introduction to the romanticized cowboy culture of the 1930s, so even if you’ve never seen a true American Western, you’re sure to enjoy a visit. Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas - The reality of this public art installation is simple: just 10 classic Cadillacs lined up, half buried with their tail-fins sticking out. That’s it! The visuals change thanks to the “open spray” policy that permits visitors to bring their own paint and leave their mark on the popular roadside display. Lou Mitchell’s Restaurant in Chicago, Illinois - Located just a few blocks from the Route 66 starting point in Chicago, you’ll practically taste the nostalgia at this family owned diner. The friendly staff here knows how to treat guests right–you and your sweetie will be greeted with sugared donut holes to enjoy while you peruse the pages-long menu and soak in the charm. They claim to serve “the world’s finest coffee,” so you know you can’t go wrong with a visit!
Route 66 is known by veteran road warriors as “Mother Road.” Traveling the length of it will take you and your sweetie through 8 states and past countless roadside attractions. Technically speaking, you could make the journey in 4 or 5 days, but most road trippers agree that you’ll want 10 days or more to really enjoy the experience. And nothing says you have to drive the whole distance; why not choose a shorter section that passes through 2 or 3 states closer to home? Don’t let a lack of time stop you from stepping back in time and driving along the iconic Route 66 for a few days with your sweetie. There’s no doubt you’ll find plenty to see, laugh about, and enjoy together no matter how far you go. Dusty Fox is a full-time freelance writer who focuses on travelrelated writing.
