3 Ways to Nourish Your Relationship

PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE

10 Fun Summer Ideas For Couples Warmer temperatures in Summer means couples can spend more time outdoors. Spending more time with that special someone in your life can really enhance your relationship. Here are 10 great ideas to go outside and play together.

Go to the Rib Fest, Greek Fest, “Taste of ” Fest or whatever food festival is in your town. Sample the fare, enjoy the music and dance on the grass. Attend an outdoor music festival – you can get seats in the outdoor theater, carry seats to sit on the grass or just spread a blanket and make a picnic. For even more fun, pick one in a different city than your own and spend the night for a romantic getaway. Fly a Kite – this is a great activity for a couple that’s not too sporty. You’ll have fun trying to get that kite in the air and competing on who can get there’s the highest. Bring an extra kite to share with a child that may be watching but doesn’t have one. Its good karma.

Be a Tourist – in your own home town. Take a walking tour, or museum tour or architectural tour or whatever your town offers. Rent a boat – or borrow a boat or convince a friend to gas up his or her boat and get out on the water. You can fish or swim or one of my favorites, watch the city fireworks show from this advantageous viewing point without the crowd. Go to an outdoor movie or drive-in movie theater – In Chicago they offer free movies in the Parks throughout the summer. See if any are available in your town. Think Drive-In movies are a thing of the past? There are at least 338 Drive-Ins in America from California to Maine and Nebraska to Louisiana. Grab some popcorn and put your arm around your sweetie while you watch one of the new summer blockbuster movies. Go to the State Fair together – have a corn dog, cotton candy or any other food from your childhood you loved. Check out the prized cow, the fat pig, and the biggest watermelon. Be sure to taste the best homemade pie and scream when you’re on the carnival ride.

Cheer on a baseball team – Sure you could go to the stadium of your favorite pro team, but I was thinking of a local team in your neighborhood park. It could be a little league team, a company team from work, or choose opposing teams you just happen upon that day. Why not do a little “my team is better than your team” trash talking to keep it fun. Go biking together – I know I encouraged this last month in our biking issue, but it bears repeating. Biking is fun, easy, and you can do it anywhere. Bike through neighborhoods you’ve never been in before and do 3 things. 1. Try the food or dessert at a local spot. 2. Find some interesting architecture or building and take a picture with your cell phone. 3. Find someone or something unique about the place from an artist, music or cultural standpoint. Go to the zoo– Take your camera and take pictures of the adorable animals. Hold hands as you walk around the zoo. You’ll find other ideas for summer fun in this issue. Ideas include taking a short 3 to 5 day cruise. Or you can take a drive through the beautiful, Smokey Mountains and visit our romantic destination spotlight—Gatlingburg, Tennesse. s a country with a turbulent history, Vietnam is now an oasis in full bloom. Its natural beauty and generous spirit are flourishing and its people warmly welcome the steady trickle of tourists to their shores, delighting in showing them everything their home has to offer - and let me tell you, there is a lot!

AWAKENING THE SENSES:

TEN DAYS IN VIETNAM

Not known for drawing the backpacker crowds like its neighbors in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a country that has always intrigued me so I couldn’t wait to explore it. Setting off with images in my mind of peaceful rice paddies and colorful floating markets, I was fully aware there was so much more to see that that and so I was glad that I had booked a guided tour. My tenday south to north trip enabled me to squeeze every last drop out of my limited time off and left me absolutely besotted with this wonderful country.

Our first day took us biking around the countryside surrounding Ho Chi Minh City, where we discovered women making rice noodles and crackers in huts. Watching the sticky discs dry on hand-made racks, we rested and tried to quench our neverending thirst, brought on by the intense humidity. After a wild night in the old capital the night before, it was hard to comprehend that the 4 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE

World Heritage Site is a jaw-dropping example of a by-gone era with its airy, yellow painted buildings and masses of lanterns hanging across its streets. It’s also one of the best places to buy tailor-made clothes and so we spent a fun couple of hours on one of our days there getting measured for dresses and suits before setting off on a walking tour through the ancient streets. Being here, you really get a sense of old Vietnam and HộiAn’s calming atmosphere was a great introduction to the country’s Buddhist heritage. The following day, we biked past painted pagodas on the edge of verdant rice paddies and cycled alongside rivers bridged by crumbling arches that house small temples, before eating noodles at a riverside restaurant. The view over the twinkling Thu Bon river was the perfect ending to our time in central Vietnam.

by Nathalie Aucutt

only noises now were the sound of thousands of crickets chirping in the rubber trees and the rice discs gently popping in the sun. This example of contrasts was not the last that we experienced during our active holiday in Vietnam. In fact, it was just one of many, which seem to have left such a lasting impression. After a visit to the haunting Cu Chi Tunnels, we headed to the airport for a quick flight north to the bustling hub of Da Nang, followed by a drive over the famous Dragon Bridge to peaceful Hội An. This

The next couple of days were by far the most fast-paced but also some of my favorites. Going to Vietnam and not getting on a moped is a bit like going to London and not riding the Tube - it’s just one of those things that becomes so normal, you will eventually do it! Having seen the traffic on the streets so far, I was very nervous about my first experience as a scooter passenger but the drivers we had were fantastic and I actually felt really comfortable riding

around Hue on two motorized wheels! We rode for hours around town and country, whizzing past hard-working buffalo and down narrow streets draped in strings of clean clothes, drying quickly in the mid-morning sun. We stopped to learn how to make incense sticks, scented with cinnamon and pulled up by the abandoned Ho Quyen Arena, where elephants once fought with and killed tigers to entertain the royal family. Later, we watched the sun set over the serene Huong Pagoda, which rests on the banks of the ethereal Perfume River. It was absolutely beautiful. The next evening, sated and happy after more cycling and sightseeing, we boarded the night train for a 13 hour journey north to the country’s capital, Hanoi and then continued to rural Mai Châu by road. Characterized by wide valleys of rice fields, which are surrounded by mountains and dotted with stilt houses, Mai Châu is a peaceful region in northern Vietnam and we enjoyed a welcoming homestay there, complete with tasty and authentic meals, revitalizing massages, weaving lessons and stunning views. After nights in towns and cities and the previous

night spent being rocked to sleep by the rhythm of the train, drifting off to the sounds of nature was a welcome change. Waking naturally with the rising sun as it filled our sleeping deck with light, we were all refreshed and ready for our penultimate destination, Halong Bay.

Sailing through the dramatic bay on our private junk boat was one of the most exhilarating experiences of the trip. The limestone karsts that the bay is famous for rise up from the still blue water to form tiny and intriguing islands, making us feel very small as we cruised to our destination. We dropped anchor and indulged in a spectacular seafood lunch on the deck before enjoying an afternoon of sea kayaking and monkey-spotting! Again, it was strange to think that just a few hours earlier, we were waking up in a wooden lodge in the countryside. That night, all our exercise was rewarded with another pictureperfect Asian sunset and as the red globe dropped low in the sky, we toasted our adventures before curling up in our luxurious cabins to prepare for a night on the water and our final stop, Hanoi.

Read the guides and stare longingly at the photographs but nothing will prepare you for the riot of downtown Hanoi. A crescendo of people, street food stalls and mopeds stops abruptly at HoanKiem Lake - the calmness in the eye of the storm. Here, you will be able to spend hours watching the world go by from a bench amongst hundreds of colorful calla lilies. After an obligatory and absolutely delicious bowl of classic Pho at Pho 10, we set off on our final bike ride, which involved crossing the Red River on a little ferry and a revitalizing stop for freshly squeezed sugarcane, spiked with kumquat juice - heavenly!

Our last night on the tour was filled with a mouthwatering selection of Vietnamese dishes, including sesame chicken, catfish in dill and of course, spring rolls! We chatted for hours and drank traditional beer hoi at a makeshift sidewalk bar as we recounted our incredible adventure. Well aware that we had only just scratched the surface of this truly special place, we shared a knowing look on our final toast; someday, we would return here. Indulge

Yourself

by JESSICA LAPIDO

It seems that every year goes by faster than the last. We are so busy taking care of everything that we don’t take time for ourselves. This is the perfect time to indulge YOU for a change. So I’m revealing my favorite ways to de-stress and take care of you.

Say Omm – With so much to do and stay on top of it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Clear your head of worries. Start focusing on the in-and-out cycle of your breath for just a few minutes a day or when you're lying in bed at night. It will help slow your heart rate and relax your muscles, too.

Date Night – Under the pressure and stress of day-to-day

life, it's easy to lose touch with the people you love. Schedule time to be with your friends and family. Be it a dinner out or a movie in, squeeze in some quality time and you will automatically feel better.

Hit the Gym – Really. If you haven't already upped your

pre-summer, bathing suit workout routine, here's good reason to: Exercise has positive emotional and psychological effects. Take a walk, go for a run, or dance around your kitchen. Any type of physical movement will help produce more uplifting endorphins. I must admit this is the hardest one for me to fit in, but I have a treadmill and have made a deal with myself to earn my TV watching by walking.

Soak Up Some Rays – The sun rejuvenates us; we crave it. It automatically makes you feel worry-free. Now that Mother Nature is blessing us with gorgeous weather, you need to get outside and enjoy it.

Journaling – is a safe and accessible way for you to express the emotions you've been bottling up," Identify what's bothering you, and address that topic solely. For example, if you're upset

that your late father won't be there to walk you down the aisle, title the entry "Missing Dad," and stay on that theme to avoid flooding yourself with too many emotions at once.

Spa Day

– get a massage, mani/pedi or a blow out for no reason in the middle of the week. When you feel great about yourself…the stress just melts away.

Let Your Inner Child Play – head to a zoo, playground or amusement park. swinging!

Raccogliere Reviving Our Marriage on an Italian Farm

A

trip to Italy was the stuff of middle-aged fantasy. We’d always wanted to go but it seemed completely

irresponsible compared to the practicality that was our lives in the Midwest. We’re too busy. I can’t take time off of work. Who would watch the kids? And what about the cost? We barely get by as it is. Not to mention our marriage was on life support. Life’s routines, turning forty, mid-life anxiety, and more than a decade of taking one another for granted had brought us to the brink of divorce. Our relationship had become like the old hound on lying on a porch nail—comfortable in our discomfort. To save ourselves and our family we had to get off the porch and away from the routine. We needed simplicity, less noise, and less selfishness, a vacation from life. To get there we had to immerse ourselves into a new world. Earlier that year, I started a small organic vegetable farm, a C.S.A. (Community Supported Agriculture), and sold shares to our friends and neighbors. As my interest in global organic farming and Agritourism grew, I joined the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) and began reading about places where we could escape; someplace where we could be more than simple tourists, and an experience where we would have to rely on one another. After reading the description of the Kibo Olive Farm (Kibofarm.com), we were hooked. We booked our flight to Palermo via Rome using every last cent we didn’t have, asked our parents to watch the kids, swallowed our doubts and feelings of irresponsibility, and prayed that we were doing the right thing.

by Stinson Anderson

We arrived on a Tuesday at the farm Kibo which is located in the province of Palermo just two and a half kilometers south of the threehouse berg of Tudia. The property looked as if it was built in the sixteenth century—a main house and four smaller buildings built with stone and buttery colored stucco roofed in red tile. One building, a small barn, stored a tractor and farm supplies, another shed was chock full of wood that crawled with the gnawing of termites. And then there was the quaint rustic house no larger than 10 x 12 with purple Clematis climbing the front wall. A brick oven for baking wood fired pizza was attached and accessed from the inside. This is where we would sleep— under ancient wooden beams, stucco, and the lingering aroma of pizzas past. “Very romantic,” said our hostess with a giggle. After setting our bags in the Pizza House, we continued the tour to the back of the property where we could take in the postcard expanse of 3,700 olive trees lined over a hillside of dark wet soil. The overcast evening sky and the blue-green hue of the grove shined in the beautiful eyes of our hostess, EleonoraBriguglia as she described their simple way of life. Eleonora, or “Ellie”, the daughter of Rosellina Di Salvo Briguglia and Maurizio Briguglia, manages the entire operation with help from her sister Laura. It was Ellie’s grandfather who had farmed wheat and other grains, but after the property passed to Signora Di Salvo, olive trees were added (Nocellara del Belice' and Biancolilla varieties) to produce their awardwinning Kibo oil. Organically grown in the rich volcanic soil of Mt. Etna and the ever warm Mediterranean sun, Kibo is a flavorful bouquet of grass, sorrel, and fennel with a peppery aftertaste that is distinctly Sicilian. It is coldpressed, extra virgin which means only the first press is taken—olives only—no leaves, no heat. Ellie and her family manage every aspect of production from the soil to the press ensuring only sustainable methods are used. It is why they hand pick their trees where larger farms may use machine pickers which can damage the olives and the trees and put too much debris in with the press, thus affecting the taste. ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE 11

Americans when asked about ricotta cheese turn up our noses as the image of a small tub of pasty white goo flashes across our visual cortex. The stuff Mom puts in the lasagna because it’s what the recipe calls for. But fresh ricotta in Italy the by-product of other cheese making, is a white creamy heaven scooped up by hand and added to bread and oil. We sat on a red and white gingham blanket under the trees and passed around a basket containing fresh bread, ricotta, olives, anchovies, something called Caponata, salami and of course, Kibo olive oil. Our mixed languages and laughter was like a ripple effect of sound drifting in all directions over the sea of trees. After eating, we lied on our backs for a rest in the sun, but before our eyes could twitch, Ellie sprang to her feet and said, “We pick now. Raccogliamo.” (Italian verb: raccogliere: to gather together.)

Olives must be harvested dry to prevent mildew, and for days prior to our arrival, rain had blanketed the island. Ellie wore the anxiety of a harvest already weeks behind schedule. After a light breakfast (colazione) that first morning, she marched us to the grove and received our first lesson in hand picking (or raking with a hand rake). Branches were pulled and raked and the olives dropped onto nets draped around the base of the trees. My wife and I worked together. Two other workers, or WWOOF’ers as we were called, were at the tree next to us— Matthew, from Brooklyn and Chris from the U.K. Both had arrived weeks ahead of us and had performed other farm chores— chopping wood, mending fences, and tending to the waning vegetable garden while waiting for the rains to stop. Ellie, educated as a textile artist, believes raking olives is an art form, which for her means that to be good you’re not only fast but thorough. We were neither. The others moved from tree to tree three times as fast, and we could tell our lackluster pace was worrying our hosts. By days end we were discouraged and worried. What we had gotten ourselves into? But before we fell into our beds we resolved to do better the next day. After all, pride was on the line. It was the first year for Ellie to use WWOOF’ers to pick her olives instead of migrant workers or locals, and our worst nightmare was that someday they would reminisce about the year when thatcute American couple came and couldn’t pick worth a damn. After all, we represented the Midwest, the bread basket of our country, and a heritage of hard working farmers. But more than all of that, we represented our family and even our marriage, irrespective of its fragile state. On the flight over, my wife and I had vowed to work together and somehow find a way to trust one another again after the year of hurt we had inflicted upon one another. It felt like a pinky swear at 30,000 feet, which was about all we could muster. The repetitive work proved therapeutic and at times even hypnotic, allowing for introspection, grief, and forgiveness to settle on us like the olive dust from the trees. We often paused and looked around awestruck at the incredible beauty of the dark brown hillsides recently tilled after the wheat harvest, the hills farmed almost to the tops, and sheep grazing along another grassy hillside; the soft sound of their bells carried on the wind. A lone shepherd watched over them. Throughout that first day and the days ahead, we traded glances through sunlight dancing on waxy leaves, and even when I didn’t look up, I could feel her cautious smile—her looking through me with that worry laden question on her breath, “Will we make it?” Maybe this was why we were slow. Lunch time was also simple but oh so delectable. Most of us 12 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE

We never became as fast as our hosts but we managed to improve enough to feel we were earning our keep. Normally, WWOOF’ers work six to eight hours a day leaving time for fun and sight-seeing on evenings and weekends. However, with our friends at Kibo being so far behind schedule it was necessary for all of us work from sun up until sun down. Even Mamma Di Salvo was in the very tip tops of the trees raining down olives. Picking is hard, dirty work. By the fourth day I was down to my last pair of clean clothes. Laundry was done by hand (our hands) in a bucket and hung on a clothes line; and after working from sun up to sun down, we were too tired to do anything more than eat, shower and fall into bed. The shower was in main house and given the small size of the water heater compared to American standards, we limited ourselves to one minute splashon, splash-offs. Evenings were cool and it became my job to get a fire started in the fireplace and also in the pot belly stove while our hostesses prepared the evening meal. Late in the afternoon on that fourth day, Ellie asked if we would like to attend the All Saints Mass with her and her mother later that evening. Back home it was Halloween and throughout the day we talked to our hosts about our children, answering their questions, laughing and imagining how cute they would look in their costumes, all the while we were trying to swallow our heart ache for being so far away. Our youngest daughter of five referred to our trip as Mommy and Daddy havingre-mantic— her word for romantic. Out of the mouth of babes, because even at her age she knew we needed to revisit it. Mass was held in the town of Vallelunga about thirteen kilometers to the west. At dusk my wife rushed back to the Pizza House to wash her face, pull up her hair, and put on a skirt. I came in later after driving the loaded truck from the grove to the house. There was no time for showers. I quickly changed out of my filthy jeans, underwear, and shirt only to stand there and realize I had nothing clean left to wear. “Hurry up! They’re waiting on us!” she said. And so I did the only thing I could do. I tossed my shorts in the dirty clothes bag, put on a less dirty shirt, and put on my jeans without underwear. That’s right. Commando as we say in the States. When we arrived at the small sanctuary most of the seats were taken except for two located at the front. Great, right where the priest can to see all of our sins, I thought. I told my wife and Ellie to go ahead, that I’d take one for the team and stand at the back. More and more people filed in and either stood or made seats for themselves where none existed. Everyone was gracious and friendly, but I couldn’t help but feel like an outsider having just come in from the fields; dirty face, dirty clothes and obviously not Catholic as evidenced by my failure to genuflect. The priest entered from the side followed by a round nun in full habit, holding the rosary. I noticed her. She noticed me seemingly

surprised. I smiled. She returned my polite gesture with a stern look and waggled her finger at me in an up and down motion. Oh, I get it, she wants me to leave so that more of her flock can stand in my place, I thought. No worries. I retired to a bench in the square where old men walked with one another, some arm in arm as old friends, back and forth conducting earnest discussions over politics, sports, and family. A baby began to cry. A dog barked. And then an unexpected icy breeze gusted off the plateau, through the square, and into my unzipped pants giving me a frightening chill. Only then did I grasp the full meaning of the nun’s wagging finger.

embrace, our friends gave a collective sigh of, “Oh, how sweet! Così dolce!” And I thought: they have no idea how far we’ve come.

We had dinner with the family and the other WWOOF’ers after mass and I related my embarrassing story. It cycled through hysterical translations of English to Italian to French and then back to Italian. As we sat amused at my expense, my wife and I looked at one another through laughter’s tears and we couldn’t help but notice a measure of lightness and forgiveness.

Stinson Anderson and his wife continue to be happily married with five wonderful children and an exchange student from Sardinia, Italy

The next morning after our last breakfast, we exchanged email, phone, and home addresses with our new Sicilian family. And after long hugs goodbye, we insisted Ellie visit our little vegetable patch in the States, while she insisted on us returning with all of our children for the next year’s harvest.“More pickers,” she said.

A love (deeper than our hurt) had returned. For the next several days we worked separately. I picked with Matthew or Mamma Di Salvo. My wife worked with Ellie. By working apart we became concerned for one another. Our pinky swear had become a marriage vow renewed in blood, sweat, and olive dust. We served one other in ways perhaps seeming insignificant to most—small things like filling up a water bottle, sharing a sandwich, bandaging a cut finger, massaging sore shoulders, and wiping away tears. But for us, even the smallest of these gestures was of monumental and unforgettable importance to our recovery.

However, by the tenth day I’d had enough of picking. Basta! (Italian idiom: basta: enough.) I had sufficiently demonstrated that my American organic farming toughness was no match for these Sicilian women. For several days I had quietly suffered from hemorrhoids, probably due to dehydration and too much spicy sausage. I know—more embarrassment. Nevertheless, I needed to stay off my feet per doctor’s orders and per the wise advisement of Mamma Di Salvo who talked openly about her husband at times having the same problem. While the rest of the crew labored in the grove, I was left with instructions to start a fire—a really hot fire. “Tonight we make pizza,” Ellie said. I went to work for twelve quiet hours stoking a fire, which was far easier compared to what my wife was doing— working her hands raw for one last day in the trees. All day I reflected on the pain I had put her through that year. And there I was, having it relatively easy while she labored away alone. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, and yet overall, I was humbled by her strength. At sundown, Mamma Di Salvo carried in freshly made semolina dough, shredded mozzarella, marinara sauce made from the summer’s tomatoes, anchovies, and a plethora of other toppings, including (of course) a drizzle or more of Kibo oil. While the rest of the crew prepared their pizzas, I took a break from fire tending and moved to the sink where my wife was washing the accumulated olive dust from her hands and arms. I handed her a towel. “Here, let me,” I said. Taking her hands in mine, I dried them and noticed the scrapes and cuts. She looked up. “I could see and smell the chimney smoke from the grove,” she said with a tired smile. “I took it as a good omen.” I rubbed my thumb over her wedding band and brought it to my lips. “Thank you,” I said. “I love you.” We held one another in the warm glow of the Pizza House, oblivious to the opera going on around us. Then, noticing our

A Taste of

An Interview with Sandy Salle, President, Hills of Africa Travel By Donna Beasley

I

met Sandy at a travel agent conference in her home town of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was one of the featured speakers. What intrigued me the most however, was A Taste of Africa, the cookbook she was showcasing at her booth. I confess to be a foodie for international cuisine. And this book promised a culinary journey across through the world’s most beautiful continent. I had to learn more about it. The book is beautiful and Sandy has contributed a recipe in this issue for you to try in your own kitchen.

Where were you raised in Africa? I was born and raised in Zimbawe, the country where Victoria Falls is located, one of the 7 wonders of the World. And its right above South Africa. It’s a land-locked country. Northern boundary is Zambia, which shares Victoria Falls. The Eastern boundary is Mozambique which goes on to the Indian Ocean.

RTM: How Did You Acquire The Recipes? I love Africa and I love cooking as well. So in order to share my Africa with our clients I decided to approach all the fabulous properties my clients enjoyed staying at. I asked them if they would partner with me by helping me put together this book. Its really a culinary journey through Africa. The hotels, lodges and camps gave us recipes from their high-end chefs to some of their most popular dishes. They also got a photographer and took absolutely stunning photographs of the food they made, and how it was served. Then there was the challenge of putting it together and telling their story. I think the book does a fabulous job of bringing alive the taste and flavors of the dishes.

RTM: It’s more than a cookbook. What made you make it part travel guide? We wanted to create more than a recipe book. We wanted to create something where people could dream they were sitting at that table, with the elephant looking upon them. And really kind of make them feel like they were eating something and tasting the flavors as they go through the book, A Taste of Africa, is a culinary journey through the world’s most beautiful continent. And the stories showcase the lodges and camps that contributed the recipes and their locations within Southern and Eastern Africa.

RTM: What is The Hills of Africa Travel? The Hills of Africa Travel is a small boutique company, and we love looking after people. So, our trips are very customized and tailored around what people want to experience in Africa. For example, a client might come to us and say I love red wines. So we’re going to tailor an itinerary around making sure they meet a wine owner and taste wines from a red 14 ROMANCE TRAVEL MAGAZINE

wine estate for example. Another client might say I really want to see leopards, but my husband wants to see elephants. So we make sure they go to two camps. One where they will see the best leopard sightings in the world and one where they will see a huge amount of elephants. Everything is customized. So if they are looking for concierge service, lots of restaurants, airport pickups and drop offs, etc. Then we’re your people. We love to look after our clients and make sure the trip is organized to the finest detail.

RTM: People are often surprised by how romantic Africa is. What has been your experience? We do a lot of honeymoons and a huge amount of wedding anniversaries. It’s a very romantic destination whether you are going on Safari out in the middle of nowhere and being pampered. Waking up in the morning, you’re looking outside and there’s nothing but nature and your sweetheart next to you.Its just the two of you enjoying your special time together. We also do to various things to make it even more romantic. Like a private dinner in the bush, underneath a tree with lanterns hanging from the tree. We all like to be treated beautifully. And what better way when you’re on a honeymoon or romantic trip to have all these little extra surprises. Even in Cape Town we have people getting engaged at the top of Table Mountain which overlooks the city. In Victoria Falls, there is a special area right at the lip of the falls, its called Devil’s Pool. It’s open certain times of the year, where we’ll have couples get engaged. So we organize something special, like making sure the champagne is there, the ring is in the right place. We love doing those things.

RTM: What is it you love about Africa? Its so romantic and at least for me, the continent gets in my heart. I always ask people when they come back, ‘Did you get bitten by the Africa bug?’ Because if you did, you’re going to always want to go back. All five of my senses come alive when I go to Africa. I think that’s why its so romantic. Its just the two of you, your senses come alive, you’re not worried about your cell phone ringing or email. I think that its something really special.

RTM: What recipe from the book would you suggest to someone trying to impress a date? I love nutmeg and curry. There is a beautiful lamb curry recipe in the book, which you could obviously change if you don’t like lamb, you could use chicken. You can serve it with the mango salad. The Lamb and Butternut Squash Tagine recipe is from Botsawana. Butternut has a soft almost sweet taste. (A tagine is a dished named for the earthen ware pot its cooked in.) You can cook it in a cast iron or heavy pot for a long time until tender. While you’re waiting have the fire going or candles burning and sit around enjoying your sweetheart. You can smell the flavors of the butternut squash and lamb coming alive as you sit there having a glass of wine or gin & tonic and pretending you’re in Africa. I recently made the mango salad and served it as a side dish. Its mango season right now, so you could also do the mango ice cream for your dessert. Its from the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and it is rich and delicious. Its got 15 egg whites in it, to give you an idea of how rich it is. Even my kids were oohing and aahing over how delicious it is. Those would be a good combination.

RTM: What are some of the wine areas in Africa?

local farms or strawberry and chocolate. There are a lot of ways you can make it romantic, and also enjoy the beautiful flavors of the wines from the Cape region.

RTM: Anything else you want our readers to know? I just want everybody to dream big and think about what you want in the world and how you can get it. Africa might seem like a long way away to a lot of people, but once you get there you’ll be returningforever. There is something special about Africa. You can see the big 5 animals out in the wild. You could see Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Wonders of the World. So you can be picking things off your bucket list. So I encourage you to dream big, and fulfill your bucket list desires. We’d love to help you go to Africa and see it with someone who has actually been brought up and raised there. What a special, special continent. And there are so many different and beautiful experiences you can enjoy in Africa. __________________________________________________________ Sandy Salle can be reached at: www.hillsofafrica.com and for the book, A Taste of Africa, visit: http://www.hillsofafrica.com/a-taste-of-africa/

There are some really fabulous wine areas. Some of my favorite wines are the Sauvignon Blancsfrom the coastal area near Hermanus. Some of the most popular wine producing areas are Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Another romantic idea isyou can take a wine tour with you sweetheart, meeting the owners, visit the vineyards and actually going into the winery to see how it all works. The two of you can have a private lunch at a wine estate, overlooking the gorgeous valley, enjoying cheese from one of the

Ways to Nourish Your

Relationship By Debrena Jackson Gandy

W

hat is it that kills the passion, the excitement and the thrill of a new love relationship? There are many “killers.” Over time, we can begin to take the other for granted, we let familiarity breed contempt, we become complacent and “comfortable” in our interactions, or we begin to claim that we “know them” after we’ve been with them for a while. All of these can kill the thrill in a love relationship, and especially a marriage. The great news is that it need not be so, and I will share simple yet powerful ways (that cost ZERO dollars!) to keep the flame of passion and enthusiasm burning in your love relationship or marriage, no matter how long you two have been together. What I’m going to offer may not be what you think. Instead of following the promptings of our pop culture that emphasize a man having to spend money to “keep a woman happy,” on gifts, dinner, or trips, or emphasizing that

women need to become bedroom vixens or don a variety of costumes as a prelude to sex in order to keep the flames burning, I am going to go against the grain. Instead, I am suggesting something to the contrary – 3 simple ways that amplify the power of being present, connecting with his energy, and the loving touch, that requires attention and being present, but not money – simple ways to nourish your relationship connection. These work wonders, that is, if the two of you are not constantly in the midst of World War Three, icing each other out with the silent treatment, or resentment that has been building like a pressure cooker in the relationship. During periods of peace and harmony, are powerful times to put these simple steps into practice. You’ll find that they actually strengthen the bond and deepen the connection between you and your partner --and it won’t cost you a dime!

—The Gaze

You’ve probably seen it in chick flicks and romantic comedies, particularly those aimed at women…It’s that magical, golden moment that can cause viewers watching the screen to hold their breath in anticipation. It’s the moment when the male love interest stands close, gently reaches down to tilt her chin upward, and then gazes deeply and lovingly into her eyes. His gaze oozes with adoration for her. Watching this type of scene can trigger all kinds of deep inner yearnings and longings in women, who so desires to be on the receiving end of such a tender moment. All you have to do to make this type of movie scene real in your own relationship is to seize a moment when you two can stand very close, face to face, with the fronts of your bodies facing one another. Step in closer, and then look (up) into his eyes, softly (be sure your breath is fresh). Hold the gaze for three seconds and then touch his cheek gently as you complete the gaze. There is no need for words.

—Hugging

Hugs are definitely under-rated in our culture. Yes a warm embrace just downright feels good, and it gives us a warm feeling in our hearts, and even all over our bodies, but there’s a lot of other remarkable stuff that goes on when a hug takes place with your sweetheart or someone you love or care deeply for. Not only does hugging stimulate the release of oxytocin, the “cuddle hormone” or “bonding hormone” that promotes feelings of contentment and reduced anxiety. It also generates feelings of devotion, trust and bonding. A new research study at the University of California even suggests that it has a civilizing effect on males, making them more affectionate and better at forming relationships; not to mention that it can dramatically increase libido. Even the immune system can be strengthened by a steady diet of hugs. And if that weren’t yummy enough, hugs stimulate the brain’s release of dopamine, the pleasure hormone. The same affect that people try to achieve using drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamines can be achieved with a hug, and without any side effects– and it’s legal! To get the full effect of a good, long hug, stand face to face with your sweetheart, and position yourself so that your hearts will be heart-to-heart when you hug. You can do the “your arms around his neck” and his arms “around your waist” style of hug, or you can do the “alternating arms” hug. Each of you put your arms out at a slight diagonal slant and then wrap them around each other. The key is holding the embrace for at least three seconds, whichever method you choose.

—The Stroke

The key ingredient in the stroke is the movement of your hands up and down the back, arm, chest, thigh, face, or butt in a long, slow, gentle movement that conveys love and adoration. To combine the stroke with the gaze is like the 1-2 combo – double the power and affect. The periphery of the body like arms or back is less sexually loaded than stroking the chest, thighs or butt areas. The Mental Health newsletter states, “Our skin is our largest organ, and it can be very sensitive and responsive. The warmth of a hand held, the sensation of a soft cheek against ours, arms wrapped around shoulders in embrace... they can all go a long way toward expressing our affection for someone. But touch can actually give more than a momentary tingle or a second of solace; touch can comfort and heal. A loving stroke can also bond us together in ways that transcend words or in situations in which words may not help.” Go ahead and get in some practice with these intentional ways of nourishing your relationship, especially at one of the romantic getaways you can find here in Romance Travel magazine.

estinations in Europe, such as: Barcelona, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, or Venice have attracted worldwide interest. They are world reknown for architecture, cuisine, museums, shopping, nightlife, rich cultural histories and atmosphere. However, there are hundreds of fabulous cities which often offer fewer crowds and lower cost (especially in high season). So, before you choose where you would like to visit next in Europe, take a second to consider Seville, Spain. It is off the beaten path, and will expose you to unique travel experiences while saving you money. Seville is located in the southern and sunny region of Andalusia. This delightful city boasts bustling narrow, winding, medieval lanes and romantic, hidden plazas soaked in the scent of orange blossom, making it the perfect Spanish destination for lovers. Seville is the city of Prosper Merimée’s “Carmen” who couldn’t make her decision between the officer Don José and the bullfighter Escamillo, and is the birthplace of the legendary “Don Juan” who stole women’s hearts across all of Europe. Not quite as busy as Barcelona or as hectic as Madrid, Seville is at the very heart of Andalusian culture. It is the birthplace of Flamenco dancing, at the center of bullfighting, and home to Spain’s most festive and romantic annual fairs, the best tapas bars, fabulous nightlife, and arguably Spain’s most friendly and fun-loving residents.

bicycling. Seville’s location in the south of Spain also makes it an ideal starting point for exploring Andalusia. Almost every place in the region can be explored as a day trip. For instance, splendid beaches at Matalascañas and Cadiz are within 1 to 1.5-hour drive or can be reached via train.

BOTSWANA RECIPE

Thyme Oil–Seared Beef with Pommes Paddazza Reprinted with permission from Sandy Salle, Hills of Africa Travel/A Taste of Africa book An exotic locale where reality takes a back seat to unimaginable visions and experiences, Botswana is one of the most beautiful countries to go on an African Safari vacation. From the minuscule dragonflies to the boisterous lions, there is something magical in every element of Botswana’s intricate wildlife. Botswana is home to the celebrated Okavango Delta, a pulsing oasis nestled within the sprawling Kalahari Desert. Travelers can enjoy mokoro (canoe) safaris through the crystal blue lagoons, observe elephants, or search for endemic bird species. But what many travelers on a trip to Botswana don’t realize right from the get-go is that Botswana is also celebrated for serving up some of the best cuisine on the continent. At all of the higher end accommodations in Botswana, meals are served family-style and each dish is truly divine. It’s amazing how they manage to serve restaurant-quality meals in the bush, but they do! Below is one of my favorite recipes taken from the Hills of Africa Travel recipe book, A Taste of Africa (which features over 60 authentic African recipes from some of our favorite accommodations in southern and eastern Africa). The recipe was given to us by Ngoma Safari Lodge, which is a spectacular property located within the wildlife-lush Chobe Forest Reserve.

If you love steak and are always looking to try new rubs and flavors, then this is the recipe for you! I use this recipe often when cooking steaks, because thyme is one of my favorite herbs and brings out the rich flavors of the steak. Simply deliciousa.

Thyme oil–seared beef fillet with pommes paddazza, buttered green-pea puree, and balsamic jus de bouef Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup frozen peas 1 tablespoon butter for frozen peas 4 medium potatoes 1/4 cup olive oil 4 1/4 cups beef stock 1 tablespoon butter for balsamic jus 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 20 ounces beef fillet steak 5 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 1 1/2 tea spoons dried thyme Salt and pepper

Instructions: • • •

• •

Preheat oven to 400°F. Boil the frozen peas, drain, and mash in a food processor. Add butter and season well with salt and pepper. Cut the potatoes into thick discs, toss them with olive oil, sprinkle with a bit of coarse salt and freshly crushed black pepper, and bake until golden brown and crispy, about 45–60 minutes. In a saucepan over medium heat, reduce beef stock by three-quarters, add 1 tablespoon of butter, and finish with balsamic vinegar. Season the steak with salt and pepper, olive oil, and chopped thyme. Char-grill the steak in a frying pan for 2–3 minutes on each side and serve with the potatoes, jus, and green-pea puree.
