The Power Of One What You(th) say: On First Love

“The magic of first love is our ignorance that it can ever end.” – Benjamin Disraeli

editor michelle zhu [michelle@rompmagazine.com]

y first love was a girl. To be precise, a Walt Disney animated film.

senior contributors darren chua | joey murray | rachel ooi

I must’ve watched The Little Mermaid at least 50 times over as a child, and probably would’ve dyed my hair a flaming red back then if I was old enough to visit the salon. At night, I’d have countless dreams of singing Part of Your World inside a humungous lobster-shaped house. I’ve even once considered adopting ‘Ariel’ as my middle name (Michelle Ariel Zhu… Oh, the horror!).

contributors andre frois | aloysius chow benjamin chia | melissa zhu

I’ve now had my heart ‘broken’ a million times over – or so I thought after each tearful parting with a boy, a fallout with a friend, or an argument with a family member – just like almost everyone else would probably claim when they think back on bittersweet memories of love. But every time I hear Under The Sea playing during a rare occasion, I can’t help but smile to myself and think of how The Little Mermaid had brought so much meaning and magic to the three-year-old me. While we enter 2013 with fresh hopes and expectations, we hope you enjoy our very first issue of the New Year. Whether you’re single (pg 68) or taken, there’re plenty of ‘firsts’ to fall in love with. Join international music sensation Poliça as they set foot on Singapore grounds for the first time this January (pg 14). Think about what to wear (pg 35) on your first date if you’ve scored one with a potential significant other this revered (or reviled!) Valentine’s Day, or where to ‘chope’ that romantic dinner with your date (pg 48). If you’re for team Singapore, don’t forget to tune in to the star of 98.7FM’s first-ever Radio Star, Sonia Chew (pg 18), and check out what the Roberts brothers have to say about their very first co-authored book (pg 56).

Breaking (Under)Grounds Laid-back

B-boyer and blogger shares his personal take on the sub-culture of B-boying with Michelle Zhu and Darren Chua.

Walk through certain train station underpasses in Singapore and you’re likely to witness contortionists flipping, spinning on their heads and freezing in impossible poses. Some might deem the term ‘B-boying’ – otherwise known as ‘breaking’ or ‘break-dancing’ – as derogatory and commonly associated with school drop-outs and lazy idlers. Others see it as a way of life, self-expression and creativity. Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that this style of street dance involving jawdropping acrobatic moves has been finding its way slowly but surely onto Singapore’s grounds. And what do you get when you cross a local B-boy with a sardonic, tongue-in-cheek wordsmith? Upon graduating from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and New Media, 27-year-old Alden Tan felt that life was too short for the 9 to 5 grind. Instead, he chose to lead by example by pursuing his interests in both break-dancing and writing, in a quest to “help people find passion and lead awesome lives”.

012/RØMP

What does the term ‘B-boy’ mean to you? A B-boy translates into Break Boy or Bronx Boy. To me, being a B-boy means many things. He works hard to create his own style and identity on the dance floor, while also extending the culture of hip hop to his own everyday lifestyle. B-boying caught my attention when I was just 16 years old and I saw a couple of dancers dancing to some boyband songs. They were only doing some basic stuff, but it blew my mind. And that made me want to explore it more. As an experienced B-boy and blogger, do you consider yourself a custodian of the current scene? Nah, man. I’m just a B-boy who has passion and always a student of the dance. If anything I guess people know me as the B-boy who has his own blog. I write a lot about B-boying and use it as a subject matter to drive out the message of passion, following your heart and doing what you love. Is there a particular ‘local’ style of breaking that sets our B-boys apart from others? In my opinion, no. Every B-boy is unique in their own style for sure, but if anything we are simply innovating from the roots of it all rather than differentiating ourselves. However, being a small country with a small scene, I’d say we’re like underdogs who can surprise the rest of the world with what we actually have. How would you describe your own style of breaking? I’d say I’m a mix of different styles. I like to learn different things and mash them together in my sets, from power, tricks, threading to footwork… although lately, I’m trying to learn how to let loose more and just dance without any form of thinking.

Breaking moves are easily picked up on Internet sites such as YouTube. In general, would you think that this has helped or hindered the style of B-boying? I’d say both. It has helped because it makes it easier for anyone to learn. It has hindered as it may make B-boys think we’ve to adhere to a certain method of learning, when actually you can open up and do whatever you want. How important do you think it is for B-boys out there to get a ‘real job’ (i.e. 9 – 5 office job)? Well ‘important’ is different for everyone, just like how success is defined differently. It’s important as B-boying full-time in Singapore may be harder as opposed to getting a normal job to sustain yourself. If you ask me, as long as it makes you happy, it’s all good. Importance doesn’t matter. What’s a Degree to you? Would you recommend it to a fellow B-boyer as a worthy investment? I’ve worked full-time for a bit before, so I guess you can say a degree gives me security knowing that I can fall back on something. Yes, I’d recommend it simply because education is important in this world today – though how you want to go about it and put value to it is completely up to you. Feel Inc. Poliça’s gorgeous and charismatic matriarch Channy Leaneagh likes helping people feel better, and she does so through practicing herbal medicine, concocting tinctures and composing utterly mesmerising music. PHOTO CREDITS TO Laneway Festival Singapore & Chugg Entertainment Asia Pte Ltd

Text by Andre Frois

RØMP/015

Playing St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival on 26th January, the Minnesota natives are thoroughly thrilled by the challenge of having to play alongside indie icons like Yeasayer, Kimbra, Kings Of Convenience and the polarising Gotye. Adamant perfectionist and multiinstrumentalist Leaneagh, who occasionally lambasts herself when she is unable to hit her audience’s Gräfenberg spot, was especially amped when we spoke to her.

P

oliça isn’t even a real word. The closest it gets is ‘polica’, the Slavic word for ‘shelves’, or, as vocalist Channy Leaneagh suggests, the Polish word for ‘policy’, which still does not explain the Latin cedilla below the ‘c’. Her poignant reply to our question: “Like a child, the band’s name has a literal meaning, and then also the meaning that only the mother knows and can’t share with anyone,” which she simultaneously posted onto the band’s website.

016/RØMP

The female captain of Poliça still lends her dynamic vocal capabilities to artsy collective Gayngs, whose star-studded line-up features Poliça cofounder Ryan Olson, eccentric electro singer-songwriter Har Mar Superstar and members from Grammy Award-winning folk rock heroes Bon Iver. Able to give a soul to something as mechanical as electronica, art and nature enthusiast Leaneagh’s ethereal voice wanders through Poliça’s recent debut album Give You The Ghost over synth rhythms, eloquent bass lines and beats from Poliça’s two drummers, and continues to win fans over one country at a time.

What would you say is Poliça’s ‘policy’ and work ethic? I have a policy about how I work and how I work with people. Poliça is very much like my child, and I want it to resemble and sound like my beliefs and desires.

What’s it like, being the only lady in the band? Tell us more about Chris, Drew and Ben, as well as the roles they play. Chris is the bass player and, additionally, a phenomenal vocalist. He also plays in the bands Pony Trash and Heavy Deeds. Ben Ivascu plays drums and he also plays in bands such as STNNNG and Marijuana Deathsquads. Drew Christopherson is the other drummer and he also plays in the band Votel and Marijuana Deathsquads. They are all superbly awesome standup men. They are funny, sweet and bring their best to every show. I don’t think of myself as a lady when I play music with them.

What’s

the story behind the formation of the band?

How

did you end up being able to play so many musical instruments?

change my mind pretty often though... there are so many great places in the world.

My parents are fully responsible. They put me in lessons and encouraged me to practice and take music seriously. I started with the piano, then the violin, then the trumpet, viola and guitar.

The moods of your songs seem to change very often too. What do you draw inspiration from?

And your favourite? Probably the piano, but I am almost as bad at piano as I am on the trumpet.

Will it be your Singapore?

first time in

Yes, and we are all so excited! I have heard so many great things about Singapore and cannot wait to see it for myself!

Where’s

been your favourite place so far?

We have been all over Western Europe and almost every state in America. My two favourite cities, at the moment, are Austin, Texas and London, UK. I

It was a simple procedure really. I asked Ryan to make some music with me. He agreed, it ended up being fun, and we made 11 songs. Then he thought it could be released as a record and toured with a band. He pulled three of his favourite musicians into the songs, and he has a lot of favourites, and a great manager and, abracadabra, it became Poliça.

What

will you be up to after this tour?

Emotions, nature and love.

On to more touring and improving.

If

you had to describe your music in five words?

How

Rhythm, passion, electronic, space, soul.

I miss my friends and family, and am sorry I’m not around to help them and hang out. However, I’ve also met so many really awesome people through my work with Poliça, and I am grateful for them all.

Have

you noticed Poliça’s brand of music to attract any particular types of personalities?

I haven’t noticed any common personality traits amongst our supporters... I could only hope that they would be a diverse group.

What do you set out to achieve through your music? We try to give people the opportunity to escape into another world and to feel something good.

great a toll constant touring take?

does

A

little bird told us that you’re also writing new material? Can fans expect a second album in 2013?

I hope so! We are working on that right now.

What

kind of legacy would you like to leave behind?

Sincerity and sacrifice.

WHO IS:

018/RØMP

Sonia Nicola

ROMP gets exclusive with the winner / of 98.7FM’s first-ever talent-search campaign, Radio Star 2012. Sonia Nicola Chew shares about her victory over eight other finalists, and her promising future with the Mediacorp radio station. Tell us more about yourself and what makes you unique. Despite people telling me that I look ‘fierce’ and unapproachable, I’m actually very sociable. I’m a film buff, and I have an obsession with shoes and beauty products... I mean, you have to check out my room! I’m constantly on the lookout for good food and I swear by yoga to start the day, even if it means a five-minute stretch. My style is what makes me, me. I will never hear the end of it from my friends, about how everything I own is black. I’m still on the lookout for the blackest shade of hair dye available (laughs). But I just love how monochromatic clothes have the ability to make you look glamorous instantly. It doesn’t take the attention away from your natural beauty. What are your plans for the future?

What have you been up to? I just came back from Korea not long ago as I attended the Busan Film Festival. And now it’s back to tons of schoolwork and of course training with 98.7FM. How does it feel like to be a Radio Star? Is it anything close to stardom? When I won the competition, the feeling was gold. But stardom is something I have to work for, and not something that simply lands in my hands overnight! The competition itself was grueling, but all that effort certainly paid off. What made you participate? I was actually thinking of getting a part time job at the time, simply because I wanted to be able to afford more things (students, you feel me, right?), so I applied to some radio stations, but to no avail! Just when I decided it was a lost cause, I stumbled upon this competition. I put on my best outfit and went in for the kill. What have you gained from this experience? The most important thing I’ve learnt is that without self confidence,

there’s really no point in chasing your ambitions. I started out pretty shaky, simply because I did not believe in myself. There were many ups and downs throughout the competition, but eventually I found that confidence within myself through the support of my wonderful family and friends, and of course my mentor, Rozz. How were you feeling during the competition? I felt like I was finally doing something to get a head start on my career even before I graduate from University. Radio is something I particularly enjoy, and to take it to the next level was an amazing feeling. Of course, I was nervous too, but what’s a competition without nerves? What do you think made you emerge victorious? It was a tough competition, and it was anybody’s game. I even got eliminated and brought back as a wild card after the second round. After that, there was absolutely no way I was going to disappoint the people who believed in me, especially the judges. Perhaps that was what gave me the extra determination to go all the way and give it my best shot.

Once I graduate with my degree next year, I intend to put all my focus in building my career with 98.7FM. Of course, I would like to do a bit of travelling as well. I see myself in radio for quite some time, and I doubt that’s going to change anytime soon.

Matters of the Heart: Give us your definition of a good relationship. A good relationship really stabilizes a person. It’s about constantly looking forward to discovering new things with him/ her, and discovering companionship at a whole new level. Have you ever heartbroken?

been

Definitely. I remember the first time I got heartbroken; I got pretty reckless and did silly things like getting crazy piercings. I even chopped my hair off to a cut that could rival the boys. Well, I’m glad that’s over! Describe your ideal guy. He has to dress well, speak well, have a sense of humour, and on top of all... patronize my incessant slew of puns.

Take Me Out of Town! Move over, Central Business District. With a trusty shovel in hand, Joey Murray opens your eyes to five charming spots in Singapore beyond the CBD.

Club Street Social will make you feel right at home in Manhattan with their high ceilings, exposed brick walls, and mahogany barstools. Pick from any of their seven custom-made cocktails ($16 - 20), fashioned with everything from gin and tequila to less prolific, artisanal ingredients like yuzu, walnuts, and even bacon! Their crostini and piatti prove to be moreish, leaving you begging for more – the Pan-seared Lobster, Avocado, Yuzu Mayo ($28, with a salad) being the magnum opus of their exquisite culinary work. And if you want to be like Madmen’s Don Draper, feel free to order and sip on their Sam Adam’s Boston Lager or Thatcher’s 2011 Vintage (only they could make beers sound so posh!). The Nutella Bread Pudding, Ice Cream ($12) is also not to be missed.

The all-male-trio of bosses adorned their walls with coq-related framed memorabilia and an industrial D-I-Y chalkboard-thatisn’t-a-chalkboard. The music varies between hard rock, alternative, jazz and indie, and the food is finger-licking good. Take for example the Chicken Karaage ($6, with a choice of dip) – choice cuts of chicken that are flavourfully seasoned, and the Braised Pork Belly with Teriyaki Sandwich ($15, with a generous serving of chips and dip), which showcases a square, juicy and succulent cut of pork belly sandwiched between two toasty slices of bread. Also take your pick from an extensive list of alcoholic beverages that runs several pages, featuring everything from bubbly ciders (Brothers Toffee Apple being a sure favourite among the ladies) to the hardier Belgian Chimay Red and Duvel. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Chuck Norris ($25) will sock it to you with its industrial strength triple shot of Absinthe Green, Blue, and Red. Who knew that Chuck would inspire a drink that would keep you dancing all night long?

The Art of Marriage

Morocco Portal

Rachel Ooi scopes out an inspiring couple who seek to tell the world about their life journey together and their romance with art. Individually, Angie Tan-Burns and Gregory Burns are passionate artists who have displayed their works in renowned exhibitions and print publications. Some of Gregory’s achievements include being featured in a group exhibition at John Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and painting on the Pudong Bund at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Angie, on the other hand, has had her photographic work on the covers of magazines world-wide. Together, the dynamic duo have been building an extensive portfolio as husband and wife for over a decade, having conducted 20 artist-in-residences across the globe since 1999. The two have also notably collaborated to produce Painted Journey in 2005: a book consisting of ten painting expeditions and exhibitions. This toothsome twosome is more than just any ordinary pair – they aim to share their experiences through narrating thoughtful stories in their works. The couple’s painting and photo showcase, Portals & Passages, which was recently displayed at the DiverseCity 2012 exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum, explores their nomadic journey between California and distant islands. How did you guys meet? We met at the beach in Singapore. Angie was an avid windsurfer, and Gregory happened to pass by her club for dinner. The rest is history. Share with us the ups and downs of working on projects together. We’re both strong-minded and have our own way of working and doing things. The best way we can work together is to let each person do what they do best, then come together at the end to fine-tune things. We have very different perspectives on how to create art, but feed off each other’s methodology. Tell us more about your relationship. It’s best when we leave each other alone to do what we do best. We both enjoy travel, nature and sports, so we do a lot of living together; our lives are intimately intertwined on many levels. Although we are often together 24/7 for weeks at a time, we also bear in mind to give each other space to do our own thing every once in a while. What’s your combined artistic workflow in the DiverseCity 2012 exhibition? Each of us brought our best work to the collaboration, which focused on the theme of ‘Life Journeys’. In tandem, the paintings and photos feed each other to create a deeper narrative.

Suzhou Passage 1

Is there any consistent theme in your works that denote both of your personal signatures? Yes! Our works revolve around travelling and capturing raw, unedited moments and experiences. What have you gained from being part of DiverseCity 2012? We participated in DiverseCity 2012 with the intention to be part of something bigger than just ourselves, as we wish to share our experiences with others. It is also beneficial for us to be part of a bigger community. As artists, we often work in our own world, so it’s good to connect with a larger audience. Derb El Bahia

About DiverseCity 2012 Featuring over 92 Singaporean artists and the 108 works they presented over the past year in 90 cities, DiverseCity 2012 celebrated not only the repertoire and global reach of Singapore art and culture, but crosscultural exchange and collaboration at its very best. A culmination of SIF’s work in bridging communities through its Singapore Internationale grant, DiverseCity 2012 featured familiar artists such as Ming Wong, Ho Tsu Yuen, Vertical Submarine, Robert Zhao, and Zakaria Zainal, and plenty of new and emerging artists across four genres. More than stage presence

A LASALLE College of the Arts graduate with a Bachelor (Honours) in Acting, up-and-coming theatre hot shot Jean Toh already has an impressive list of performances under her belt. With Edith Podesta’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Stefanos Rassios’ Loveplay glittering on her CV, Jean further relishes her latest role in Toy Factory’s adaptation of Arthur Miller’s 1953 classic, The Crucible. Jean lets Mcken Wong in on more about herself, and her part in this intriguing tale of drama, paranoia and deceit. How did you land the role of Abigail Williams in The Crucible?

we respond to evil and the corollary of evil that lies in us?

The directors of the production sought me out. Initially, I was confused because I thought I was invited to an audition, but Rayann (Condy, of Toy Factory) assured me by saying, “Watching your shows for three years counts as an audition, I think.”

What has been the biggest challenge

I have never worked with such a big cast before. I’m very excited to start rehearsing and learning from all these experienced actors! It is also my debut at Drama Centre Theatre’s stage. I have heard good things about it, and I really liked watching productions in that space.

Have you ever read The Crucible? Yes, I first read it before watching the Singapore Reparatory Theatre’s Young Co-09 version of The Crucible. Georgia, who starred as Betty Parris in it, is playing the same role in this production! When I re-read it recently, I realized how poignant and relevant it is to today’s world. The Crucible talks about how individuals should strip away the façade that society forces upon them, and asks the very essential questions of our human condition — what is good versus evil, right versus wrong, individual versus society? How should 026/RØMP

you have faced so far while prepping for this production?

Time! I had shoots leftover from 2012 that was scheduled up till the third week of January, which would take up my first 2 weeks of Crucible rehearsals. Fortunately, the producers were very understanding and managed to shoot most of it in the first week and subsequently on weekends so that I could focus on The Crucible.

From

your first play up until now, tell us how you’ve grown as a performing artist, and to a larger extent, as a person?

I have learnt to overcome many of my insecurities, bad habits and how to RELAX! People would say I was quite ‘serious’, and that I was always the quiet one in class, putting my makeup in one corner. It’s very important to laugh sometimes and not scare your co-actor before going on stage.

Do

you have any advice for youths who aim to carve out a career in theatre?

Training is essential to one’s craft, just like any form of art. And always express your best self. Seize every moment on

stage so that you live with no regrets. You know, your future director may be in the audience, and you would want him/her to get a good impression of you! Not only that, know why you’re doing theatre, so that you would never wake up to a day where you’d rather be doing something else than your job.

What was your first love? Dance. I was first trained in music, then dance. I loved the discipline in ballet and the taste of individual expression in hip-hop. I initially wanted to pursue a Dance degree in LASALLE, but after a year of theatre foundation (now named as Diploma of Theatre Studies), I found acting the most challenging form of performing arts as it demands more than what a piece of score or choreography could bring. I love the freedom that comes with it, which also allows me to use dance and music elements all in one shot!

You know the ones. Those songs that you listen to when you're in love, when you're sad, or even when you're just in the mood. Especially during the week of Valentine's Day, you're bound to hear the songs that make the whole world sing about that crazy little thing called love all over the airwaves! Whether they're break-up songs, love songs, or make-out songs, Darren Chua takes a peek at the playlists of people around town.

Loving the Love Songs

Mike is also a Director at Coq & Balls, a recentlyopened pub located at 6 Kim Tian Road.

Love Song: Baby I Love Your Way by Peter Frampton

Baby I Love Your Way is just a classic. The chorus says it all; it emotes the way you feel when you fall for someone.

Make-out Song: Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row

A very heart-pumping rock-and-roll anthem that makes you feel young and invigorated with a passion to rebel. This makes it a great make-out song. This, and Spirit in Black by Slayer.

Break-up Song: Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones

This has been my break-up song for a long time, as the lyrics speak about a girl who is hard to tame – a wild and free spirit. I generally like girls like that, so the song does speak to me about losing someone that you know in your heart you couldn’t keep in the first place.

Love song: Big Jet Plane by Angus and Julia Stone I heard this song while I was still in my previous relationship, and at that point in time I remember listening to this and just thinking about that special someone. Cheesy? Of course, but I’m only human.

Make-out song: Aut Caesar Aut Nihil by Sektemtum

If you’re making out, you’re going for all or nothing! If you’ve checked out the video from the controversial French Black Metallers, the girls in said video will get you going, even if your partner doesn’t measure up.

Break-up song: I Remember You by Skid Row

It’s one of those songs I hate to love. I remember feeling like sh*t and just walking everywhere with my beer in my hand with this song playing. And hey, nothing beats the 80’s rock ballads.

Edwin Waliman, 22, Bassist of The Summer State

Find out more about The Summer State at: http://facebook.com/thesummerstate http://youtube.com/thesummerstate Twitter: @thesummerstate

Love song: Sunday by Bloc Party

Most love songs are about the chase and the grandiose things that are involved. This song talks about being in love and staying in it, knowing that you’re happy to go through the good, the bad and the ugly with this person for the rest of your life.

Make-out song: Goodnight Moon by Go Radio

To me, Jason Lancaster is a song-writing prodigy. He just finds a way to channel emotions lyrically and melodically into a ballad without making it sound cheesy. When I listen to this song, I imagine myself in the warm embrace of the love of my life in our future living room.

Break-up song: I Do, I Don’t by The Summer State It’s extremely hard not to be biased towards my own song because it holds such personal significance. Although not strictly about ‘break-ups’, it’s a song about heartbreak; and nothing is more heart-breaking than getting ‘friend-zoned’.

Make-out Song: Side to Side by Tyler Carter I cannot think of a better make-out song than this one. Not the most musically complex, but Tyler’s lyrics WILL get to you. Don’t just take my word for it! Have a gander at the comments on Youtube.

Break-up Song: Bound to Bound by For This Cycle

One of my favourite songs of late. I think it speaks for every bad breakup. I am a personal friend of the couple who wrote this as well, so this song definitely has some sentimental value to me.

Love Song: The Air That I Breathe by The Hollies

The song’s simple lyrics and catchy tune makes it such a wonderful love song! It describes your feelings to that special someone without being overly sappy, with lyrics like ‘All I need is the air that I breathe and to love you.’

Make-out Song: Maybe Tomorrow by Stereophonics

A make-out song has to be slow and sexy, so it gets you in the mood. Lucas and Peyton from One Tree Hill sure made good use of this song!

Break-up Song: I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jett You’ve just broken up, the song speaks for itself!

RØMP presents you our Top 5 Favourite Love Songs of All Time 1. Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears The song speaks about how quickly and suddenly one can fall in love, without so much as a warning or hint why. Definitely the top love song on our list! 2. Me and Mrs. Jones by Michael Bublé Originally by Billy Paul, the song speaks of a forbidden extramarital love affair. How much sexier can it get? Have Michael Bublé cover it, would be the answer to that rhetorical question. Rose petals in the water, turn up the stereo, and have yourself a Bublé bath. 3. Your Song by Ellie Goulding Great love songs always spawn great covers. Elton John’s classic springboarded Ellie Goulding to #2 on

the UK charts, and also gave her the opportunity to perform it for Will & Kate’s wedding reception. Who are we to argue with royalty? 4. You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker A timeless classic. The gravelly voice of Joe Cocker describes how attractive his lady is to him. It is essentially Mr. Cocker’s interpretation of the famous line “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” 5. If by Bread “If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can’t I paint you,” questions the famous soft rock band. Ironically, the song painted a thousand emotions for its listeners.

True North Bad Religion

Epitaph Records Iconic punk band Bad Religion release their highlyanticipated 16th studio album this January 22nd. The follow-up to 2010’s The Dissent of Man, the album was recorded over this past summer. According to singer Greg Graffin, the band aimed for “fast and concise punk songs”. While many bands choose to mellow out and play slower over the years, Bad Religion has lived up to their reputation and not conformed. The album’s first single, F**k You, not to be confused with the Cee-Lo Green hit, meets the band’s target of “fast and concise”. A quick pace is set by the opening guitars, and the rest of the song is what we’ve come to expect from the Los Angeles legends; anthemic choruses, with loud and angsty music. It is not the most meaningful of their songs, but I’m sure we can all appreciate an ode, a little tip of the hat to the two eloquent words we all have a need to utter sometimes.

Arc

Everything Everything RCA Victor

If you’ve never heard of Everything Everything before now, you might be bemused at their peculiar sound. Singer Jonathan Higgs switches in and out of falsetto so often you’d think his throat would want to charge a toll. They have an eclectic blend of electro-pop, indie, post-rock, and even 80’s synth influences thrown in for good measure. Be prepared for more head-bopping with confuzzled looks with the release of their sophomore album, Arc. The first single, Cough Cough, starts off in their typical out-of-the-box fashion, with a sample of a person coughing along to the beat while layers of vocals are added. The chorus really showcases what they do well; sing in a proper falsetto, nothing at all like that muppet Chris Martin. If you think you’ve heard it all, give Everything Everything’s Arc a go.

Push the Sky Away

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Bad Seed Ltd

Yet another long-lived unconventional band, Australian veterans Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are back with their 15th album, Push the Sky Away, released this February 18th. Anyone expecting a single released with the energy of Dig, Lazarus, Dig!! or Babe, I’m on Fire might be disappointed, but hold your horses. The single from the album, oddly titled We No Who U R, is a surprisingly low-key, mellow song with a hint of the influence of Johnny Cash in there. A deep, morose and haunting voice takes dominion over the sparse harmonies and melodies. “We know who you are, and we know where you live, and we know there’s no need to forgive,” sings Nick. So buy the album, or else.

Target Earth Voivod

Century Media After a four-year hiatus, Voivod are back with original bassist Jean-Yves Thériault, or “Blacky” as he is known in the band. The Canadian progressive-thrash metal band’s latest release gives us a taste of the new line-up, after the tragic passing of guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour. Dan Mongrain of Martyr has played with the band before, but this marks the first album “Chewy” will be on record. The biggest question on the minds of Voivod fans would be whether or not the band’s sound would change. The implication being that it would change for the worse without Piggy. With the release of the promo track Mechanical Mind, fans can rest easy. The track is a throwback to the earlier albums such as Nothingface. They’ve kept the signature dissonant chords, droning vocals and odd time signatures. If anything, Voivod’s sound has improved immensely in its production. A must-get for any metalhead this January 22nd.

Fade

Yo La Tengo

Matador Records Sticking with the theme of the unconventional, here’s a band that has been around for more than a quarter of a century, and still remains good! In case you haven’t heard, Yo La Tengo is a band from New Jersey that’s been around since 1984. Bearing in mind the short attention spans of people and how many long-lived bands seem to fade out, YLT are doing pretty well for themselves. On January 15th, YLT will be releasing their 13th full-length album, Fade. The single Before We Run is a track with a dreamy, minimalist feel to it. Georgia Hubley’s almost-lazy drawl sweeps the listener away into a reverie of looping drums and swelling brass and strings. Yo La Tengo has the ability to have a signature sound without sounding repetitive through the years. Fans of indie, alternative or psychedelic music should take a look at Fade for their collection. App-solutely in Mobile applications are beginning to create a stir among lovers by taking online intimacy to a whole new level. App developers are revving up this fairly new phenomenon, tapping into this niche market by focusing on privacy – a breath of fresh air from the bevy of social media platforms out there. Mcken Wong looks into five mobile apps that may prove to be more than a cheesy dud. Between* Developer: VCNC Available On: Android and iPhone Price: Free Unveiled in October 2011, Between* has garnered more than a million downloads, and received heaps of notable coverage from the likes of Forbes, CNN and The Economist. Created by a South Korean start-up, a couple can chat, share saucy notes (or images) and leave voice messages through this app, which is basically a niftier and simpler Facebook-ish interface for two.

LoveByte Developer: LoveByte Pte. Ltd Available On: iPhone Price: Free A local gem, LoveByte is a private journal of sweet nothings for couples: memos, dates, photos and even a private chat box. A cute shoo-in to our list due to its simple yet mood-lifting design, this app also enables you to send virtual scratch cards, unveiling surprise after surprise for each other.

HeyTell Developer: Voxilate Available On: Android and all ios devices Price: Free

Pair Developer: TenthBit Inc. Available On: Android and all iOS devices Price: Free Pair is an app that makes getting (virtually) lovey-dovey a breeze. Besides the usual private timeline for love peas to flood, they can even sketch and doodle together. The ‘ThumbKiss’ function is one that raises eyebrows, albeit in a good way. Like its name suggests, you place your thumb on the screen (with your partner doing the same on his/her phone), and there you go - a ‘touching’ virtual smooch.

HeyTell is like an incredible walkietalkie with a long range, depending on your service provider’s reliability, that is. You can use this app as a private voice messenger to convert your heartfelt emotions by talking with just a tap of the screen. Families and friends can be added to your contact list if you so wish, with the latest version giving you the option to block or un-friend unwanted suitors!

TheIceBreak Developer: theicebreak Available On: iPhone Price: Free The Ice Break simply wants you to understand your partner better, as well as what you want from a relationship - by encouraging and sparking a conversation via random questions. Based on the idea of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, a form of talking therapy, users will have their responses assessed and be able to rate their overall communication and relationship support. Don’t worry, it all stays private.

Bold and Beautiful

The the

Text by Mcken Wong

Many have raised their eyebrows regarding his preference to design beachwear instead of lingerie. His answer is simple. “With lingerie, it is very restrictive as it’s hidden under clothing. But with swimwear, there is nothing between you, the crowd and the beach. It is fantastic!”

Ever wondered how swimwear and beachwear can be glamorized as haute couture icons and fashion statements? The answer lies with Israeli designer Silvian Imberg, whose own label has been making waves for the past seven years. The recent launch of his Spring/ Summer collection is proof of his keen eye for details, fabrics and colours.

Aiming to accentuate femininity with his creations, Silvian’s latest Pearline collection of bikinis, monokinis and dresses – among many others – subtly shows off a woman’s curves without revealing too much skin. The carefully matched colours are vivid and vibrant, while the added combination of caftans and tunics adds the finishing touch to the visual masterpiece. “With the Pearline collection, I’m trying to take it into a more elegant direction, for example, the introduction of dresses. I used the same fabric and materials tailored for the swimsuits, and incorporate them within each dress, with the usual flair and style.”

Indeed, Silvian’s showcase at the Women’s Fashion Week 2012 held at Marina Bay Sands last November was an elegant and dynamic one, with each of his designs effusing fluid fashion eloquence. Few know that he was already a precocious designer at the age of 22. Unwilling to be tied down by restrictions of various fashion houses, Silvian decided to start his own company in 2005. When asked if he had any advice for the younger generation of designers, Silvian was measured in his reply, perhaps even recounting what he had to go through before reaching where he is now. “The beginning is always hard, have the patience. Keep working really hard and don’t stay in one place. Go to New York, spend a year in Paris, and try to make it in Italy. Travel around and see how things are done to witness and experience what designing really is.”

Date First No Flurry matter what preachers of inner beauty say, first impressions count. Mcken Wong sheds some light on climbing out of the first date fashion quagmire, and takes you through some dodgy fashion gaucheries which may have ruined too many first dates.

With a little skip in your steps, you go home thinking that everything should’ve gone as planned. The steak was done to wholesome perfection, the wine vintage and circa 1940, and the night was utterly beautiful. You were practically the model student if you had attended etiquette classes – holding a fork and knife like a seasoned restaurant critique. But a week later, you wondered why Mary hadn’t texted or returned your calls. Or why didn’t Peter arrange for another meal and in this age, respond to your Facebook messages? It may have boiled down, sadly, to what you wore that faithful night. A fatal concoction of cloth, colours and materials that combined to dispel any romanticism. It could be due to your yellow polka-dotted trousers you thought would impress her, or that lime green dress with a smiley face plastered on it. It could even be that pair of black boots laden with spikes, or the antediluvian pair of shades which you thought was voguish.

RØMP/035

Gentlemen: First dates are meant to be an introduction, a preview of what is to come – sort of like a mysterious masquerade for two. It doesn’t mean you have to splurge on a Tom Ford suit or even a Loro Piana cashmere scarf. The trick is to look like a million dollars with a hundred. It’s all about mixing and matching the right things, the right colour coordination and wearing clothes that don’t make you squirm too much.

Don’t be an eager beaver. Men try too hard to impress sometimes, either with supposed riches (covering yourself with labels), or with an alpha male disposition that you think you look like a Korean boy-band idol. Male pop stars get away with anything, even wearing stockings with board shorts. For us peasants in a non-glitzy world, our fashion creativity needs to be slightly capped. Dress with panache, but practically and sensibly. Cue that dude who wears a beanie and down-feather, strutting along Orchard Road in the afternoon.

Harmonize your colours. Avoid embarrassing your date with queer colour combinations. Lime green vest and purple shorts, neon red tie and yellow skinny jeans - you’ll look more like a warped Christmas tree or one of Dr Seuss’ story characters. Muted colours never dip into fashion exile, so include them in your wardrobe. The colour of your shirt should also complement your skin tone, for example velvety shades or suppressed teal tones. Aaron Kok, founder of website Model, Schmodel shares: “I once wore a fluorescent t-shirt to a movie date. In the darkness of the cinema, I heard someone say, ‘When you come back from the toilet, just look out for this guy dressed like a highlighter. I’m sitting behind him.’ Until this date, I still remember feeling the heat of embarrassment from it.”

Pick on outfits your own size. You may have your colours all sorted out with a handsome suit to boot - but wearing oversized shirts or baggy pants may make you look sluggish and dour. Finding the right cut, size and length will enhance your limbs and body. Being decked out in fitting clothes showcases your eye for detail, something that most women look for in a man. Be brave to flaunt not skin-tight and butt cheek hugging outfits, but slim fitting ones that still provide room for movement.

Stylist Tips

Aaron recommends the following from ZALORA:

Aaron, www.modelschmodel.com

“Don’t wear crass slogans, or t-shirts printed with obscene innuendos. A graphic t-shirt is fine if the graphic is kept tasteful and presentable.”

Wish Bracelet by Calvin Klein $105

Photography - John Tan @ www.streetpeek.tumblr.com

Skullhead Printed Round Neck Tee on Mesh by Chuck&Bo, $23.90

“Do dress for the unexpected. I always recommend a jacket and a t-shirt combination because sometimes, a good dinner might lead to an unexpected continuation, such as a movie or a long stroll home (cue the gentlemanly gesture of having a jacket to offer your date then). If it doesn’t happen, you’ll still look dapper.” Army Pants by Hooked, $119 Duality Blazer by Maharishi, $349

“A handsome looking watch is the ultimate fashion neccessity for men. Women have a plethora of accessories to choose from, but for men, subtlety is always attractive. I recommend a design with a good weight, well-crafted leather straps and an uncluttered watch face.”

Chronograph Watch by Danish Design, $345

Quey Lace Up Brogues by Ben Sherman - UK, $149

Ladies: Admittedly, there are many more fashion variations for women as compared to men. From maxis to jackets, Sadie skirts to tweed shorts… it’s a lady’s world alright. Although ladies tend to pay more attention to what they wear, with more options can come more fashion mistakes. At the end of the day, first dates should be enjoyable and fun. Even if the date is devoid of chemistry – you know you’ve played your part by dressing well.

Keep the ‘Hobo’ look for Halloween. Avoid boyfriend shirts and statement t-shirts. You wouldn’t want your date to have an unflattering impression that your shirt belongs to your ex, or have him read cheesy slogans decked across your bosom. Those can come later when you’ve sealed his heart and become more acquainted. Also, looping your neck and arms with hundreds of bangles and fifty necklaces just spell distraction. Cut them to just one or two, for less is indeed more.

Bare your soul, not your body! Some women pore over fashion magazines for a dose of inspiration, until they take things a little too far. For example, the adage of ‘less is indeed more’ does not apply here. Boudoir fashion may have been revived in the previous Spring/Summer season – a festival of sultry lace, plunging necklines, R21 splits – you get the idea. Don’t replicate it on your first date, even if the trend’s currently being showcased by a magazine. You wouldn’t want to be the sleaze who revealed too much.

Yes, formality matters. The truth is, as much as you want to feel comfortable and be your own fashionista, it is still a faux pas to meet your date in super comfortable attire – for example, plain jeans and t-shirts. Dress for the occasion as if you’re going for an interview, but with your potential boyfriend as the interviewer.

038/RØMP

Take for example the Autumn ‘Chaud Froid’, Butternut and Ginger Foam, Chestnut Veloute and Foie Gras – served in a mini pumpkin – you just don’t know where to start! The un-messyto-eat, large-palm-sized Omakase Cheeseburger ($13.90) has a superbly marinated and ground beef patty that’s 130gm (the Quarter-Pounder pales in comparison at a measly 113gm). The Truffle Fries ($6.90) are the darndest things – giving off the most inviting fragrance of truffles, and being crisp yet mushy inside despite their chopstickwidth! Ray of Lave Text by Mcken Wong

The great Oscar Wilde once said that “experience is one thing you can’t get for nothing”. For professional photographer Ray Chng, this phrase holds exceptionally true. “There is much to be said about photography, but it still entails years and years of experience,” Ray quips. Enamoured with the art of photography since he was seven, the 25-yearold manages his own venture, Ray Photography – a far cry from the days when he first started out by carrying heavy lighting gear along with other studio equipment as a young boy. At the age of 16, he had to juggle his studies at a local polytechnic while

052/RØMP

When one is placed in an atmosphere filled with joy, laughter and a tinge of solemnity, emotions are bound to stir. Ray enjoys shooting with his heart tuned in to the environment, especially in small scale weddings. “A couple usually invites only close friends and family members, which make the entire wedding a cosy and intimate affair. This reflects on the faces of each and every one.” Lighting is one other issue that not just Ray, but many wedding photographers face. The dim lighting in most ballrooms hinders the quality of a photograph. But at the end of the day, it’s all about “having the experience to visualize the images.”

being an apprentice at Photo Team Productions, which is not something that today’s youths would endeavour to do. “I had to work for more than 12 hours a day, which is why I usually skipped lessons or slept throughout – not that I would encourage anyone to do the same!” While he hasn’t had the time to take part in competitions just yet, Ray is a firm believer in improving his techniques and expertise through sheer hard work and chalking experience. The nine years he spent at Photo Team Productions was a valuable learning curve for him, allowing him to build his portfolio and carve for himself a name within the local fraternity.

One niche that he seems to have a budding talent for is wedding photography. The hallmark of a pivotal life moment, a wedding ceremony is also known to be a personal project to Ray. His take on each assignment mirrors Chris Johns’, the editor of National Geographic and a photographer himself, who labels each assignment his ‘baby’ – that they were what he wanted to do. Essentially, every single couple wants to look imperious in their wedding shoot, and Ray aims to capture that via his Nikon D3. “It doesn’t matter how great your angle is. The moment the couple doesn’t look good, it is a failed image.”

Besides weddings, Ray also enjoys conducting on-site photography at the birthday parties of children, where the most innocent and adorable of expressions can be caught on camera. “These kids portray genuine emotions that money can’t buy, and it is always a delight to try and capture them eternally.” When asked about his inspiration figures and photography journey thus far, Ray blanked out names and chose to be thankful. “Over the years, I have been observing how photographers conduct their shoots. They were the ones who kept me going, and I dare not say that I’m a ‘good’ photographer, because I’m still learning every day. I just want to continue experiencing photography, and to continue falling in love with it.”

OUT

on a Date

Running out of date ideas? Substituting the typical dinner and movie date with a regular exercise routine for two will not only keep one looking good, but also bring people closer together. If you’ve resolved to grow closer to your partner this Valentine’s Day, resolve to lose those love handles and turn the heat up a notch by getting in shape. A great way to bond and burn fat is to work out together, and have fun while you are at it. Why, might you ask, would working out be more romantic than stargazing or a candlelit dinner?

054/RØMP

Spend quality time together For those with busy work schedules and a myriad of other social obligations, chances are whatever spare time that you may have is spent with your friends and significant others. Spending that spare time outdoors sweating out will not only kill two birds with one stone, but also help you save on your expenditure while ensuring that you get a sufficient dose of regular exercise to stay healthy. Ditch the gadgets Having access to the web and social media at our fingertips have drastically reduced our face-to-face (F2F) interaction with our friends and loved ones. Watching a movie or TV together are passive activities in which neither party will get to know more about the other. On the other hand, getting a breath of fresh air while exercising with your partner can prove to be an incredible bonding experience, and at the same time will allow you to shut off all distractions – especially those WhatsApp and e-mail alerts. Get out of your hermit shell Another popular reason that people avoid exercise is that doing the same old routines over and over again can get rather boring, especially if you’re working out alone. What’s more, your body quickly gets accustomed to the routines and your muscles are not challenged to grow further. Time passes quickly when you work out as a couple, because you can have fun and catch up with each other at the same time. Un-glamourize yourselves It’s one thing to look good and presentable for your other half, but you should still feel strongly attracted to your loved one when you shed your makeup, fancy clothes and coiffed hair. Going through such an experience (i.e. exercising with each other sans-primping) ensures that you are comfortable around your partner, and are attracted to him/her regardless of physical appearance.

Try out this simple fitness routine that you and your partner (or friends) can get started on together, both indoors and out: 1. Pushups This is a classic exercise that tones your core, arm, chest and back muscles all at once. Ladies can do it with their knees on the ground if it becomes too tough. Start by doing three sets of 10 pushups. 2. Planks Assume a pushup position, but with your forearms touching the ground instead of your hands. Hold for 30 seconds and complete it 3 times. Challenge yourself by holding for longer (1 minute) once you are able to do it comfortably for at least 30 seconds. 3. Body Squats Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hands by your side. Keep your back straight, look forward and slowly lower yourself into a sitting position with your thighs parallel to the floor. Stretch out your arms in front of your body for balance. Slowly return to starting position. Complete three sets of 10 squats. 4. Jumping Jacks Finally, do 20 counts of jumping jacks. Perform a set each of exercises 1-4 in a row to form one circuit. Do a total of 3 circuits for an effective total body workout that will tone your major muscle groups and yet keep the intensity of the whole exercise to a moderate level.

Of course, we shouldn’t just limit ourselves to the mundane exercise routines. For the not-so-serious fitness buffs, try doing a sport together that would keep your adrenaline levels pumping without sacrificing fun in the process. There are tons of activities that you can do that are enjoyable, and you won’t even realize you are breaking a sweat while you’re at it. Here are a few couple activities to get you started: Cycling: A great sport to explore unchartered territories together, such as new parks around various housing estates. Cycling is also a great lowimpact cardiovascular activity that works your heart and lungs to their full potential, without causing much shock to your knees. For a more leisurely cycling trip, head down to East Coast Park and share a twin bicycle. Roller blading: A fantastic way to get shapely legs, roller blading tones your thigh muscles (also known as ‘quads’ in fitness speak) while burning major calories. When done together as a couple, both you and your partner can take in the sights and sounds while cruising along a scenic route. Better still, if both of you are beginners and decide to take up the sport together, this will ensure that you bond over a common learning experience. Beware: you might fall for each in the most literal sense. Cable-skiing: Aqua sports lovers can try their hand at cable-skiing at SKI360 (1206A, East Coast Parkway), which mimics the experience of wake boarding with the use of a pulley instead of a motor boat. Many people have a common misconception that exercise is torturous; that couldn’t be further from the truth. Don’t be afraid to take exercise with your loved one to a whole new level!

“We thought this book would be something that teenagers can relate to: a boy loving football, the focus on education, and everything just went on from our discussions, really,” adds Marc. Indeed, PJ and Marc grew up in a family where their father was a former professional footballer, which inadvertently sparked their love for the game. Growing up in Australia where Aussie Rules and rugby were very much the popular mainstream sports, it was football’s diversity that so enamoured the brothers. “Everyone can play the sport. It is multi-cultural and involves so many different skill-sets. You look at Lionel Messi, who’s the best player in the world, and you would think he’s just some random skateboarder waiting for his coffee in Starbucks. This is why I love football so much,” says PJ.

A story that will be familiar to many, Mister Lee’s Fantastic Football Dream tells of a young boy aspiring to become a professional footballer. The problem is, he’s a Singaporean and such dreams – within our shores at least – usually bite the dust. Co-written by the very affable brother-duo of Paul (better-known as PJ) and Marc Roberts, one would be somewhat surprised by their keen interest in Singaporean culture. Mcken Wong sits them down for a lighthearted exchange of cappuccino, football and boyhood dreams.

Marc, as compared to PJ, did not have a football career panned out as smoothly as he wanted, with knee complications forcing him to stop playing at the age of 14.“It hurt me a little, but I found some other stuff to do such as surfing and bushwalking. My goals changed to reflect my new reality really quickly, and I don’t feel any pangs of jealousy at all. I’m proud of what PJ is doing and I’m glad things worked out well for the both of us,” says Marc.

Just one look at the brothers, and I could immediately sense the strong bond between them. The friendly banter and polite mannerisms speak more of best friends, and this has contributed to a rather perfect coauthorship.

The career switches that PJ have gone through also served to highlight his motivation and resilience. From a football player to a writer, and now a financial adviser with an MBA to boot, he remains humble and attributes his life achievements to pure hard work.

Mister Lee’s Fantastic Football Dream promises to be a good read for those who need a little dose of inspiration. It depicts the many bumps that young Lee Jun Yong has to face, while on his way to achieve his dreams of becoming a professional football player.

Also, he has this to say for the budding Ronaldos and Beckhams out there: “It’s a privilege to play football and get paid for it at the same time. Recognise this and not only do you work hard, you have to work smart. It’s about being able to learn fast in all other aspects such as nutrition, sleep, mental focus and stability. To be the best, you’ve got to plan for it.”

“Marc and I have a very strong relationship, and we thought it would be great to do something together since we’ve been apart for the past 10 years. We decided that this book would be that something,” says PJ Roberts, a former professional football player with Perth Glory and Geylang United, among many others. This sentiment is echoed by his brother Marc, a trained lawyer in commercial litigation, to stop practicing in order to pursue a career in writing.

Football Trivia with PJ Roberts What

stood out for you when you were playing for Geylang United?

It would definitely be taking part in the Singapore Cup final, although we lost to Home United in that match. I had an inkling that it would be the last professional game for me, and I was right. Prior to the match, I had gone through many surgical operations and when I was told not to play football anymore, that Cup final was something that made things even more special.

Were

there any local footballers who caught your eye when you were there?

That would have to be Baihakki Khaizan, who used to be such a gangly young lad at Geylang.

He was only 18 or 19 back then, and he’s still gangly now, but today he’s got more muscles and is a regular for the national team. Baihakki embodies what a young footballer player should have, which is consistent hard work and the continual pursuit to be the best he can be.

When

you were playing professionally, how did you stay fit on and off the pitch?

You actually start to become a really self-absorbed individual. Basically, everything that you do – from nutrition to the amount of hours you sleep – is aimed towards optimising the best possible physical condition for that 90 minutes. You have to eat the right food, get the right nutrition and try to stay focused mentally. I was

The key is to have a training plan that you must adhere to – a plan which caters to the areas where you feel you need improvement. Speed for example, can be related to skill development: how you run, your strength and conditioning, and what you eat. It becomes a little bit scientific, but it still boils to whether you get out there and train hard. Fitness is something you have to build up over time, and different players have different sets of agendas.

How

do you stay connected and keep your football passion alive after you’ve retired?

I love my job as a television pundit, and it has more or less helped me to stay aware of the on-goings within the local and international football fraternities. I enjoy watching good flowing football, and of course, Barcelona is currently the best team in the world to watch – not that I’m a Barcelona fan. Football is my life, and I can’t see my passion dying out anytime soon.

Seoul-ful Surprises

Text by Mcken Wong

I was feeling like a child on Christmas morning the day I boarded a plane to Seoul. Clutching my passport and boarding ticket, I was already eagerly anticipating my stay there for the next ten days.

Six hours later, and I was at Incheon International Airport waiting for my domestic flight to Jeju-do Island. Desperate for fresh air, I stepped outside to a chilly December reception. The freezing conditions taunted whatever I wore to keep warm, caressing my cheeks and the tips of my ears in icy gusts. I watched enviously as a kid wearing racoon-like ear muffs pranced past. My first stop upon my arrival at Jejudo was the O’Sulloc Green Tea Museum. Sample the finest tea from the largest tea producer in Korea here, while picking up snippets of history. I normally derive pleasure from coffee – sipping freshly brewed tea was a refreshing alternative, such that my jet lag gently ebbed away. After all, tea has always been a long time harbinger of good health. 058/RØMP

If that (pardon the pun) isn’t your cup of tea, there’s always chocolate. Jeju’s Chocolate Museum – the world’s second largest, was also voted by one of the ‘Top 10 Chocolate Museums in the World’ by Virtualtourist.com in 2010. Within a workshop that bears some resemblance to a certain Wonka factory, visitors get to watch gallons of viscous brown liquid transform into chocolate creations of all shapes and sizes.

Another Jeju feature would be the Teddy Bear Museum – a hit with toddlers and adults alike. One can’t help but marvel at the lengths we humans can go to, with the museum owner’s absolute adoration for teddies. Rare teddy bears worth thousands, a whole makeshift forest choke full of stuffed animals, and even replicas of famous fairytale characters are some of the highlights. Ever since the Hallyu Wave swallowed me up and spat me out as a closet K-Pop fan-boy, visiting Korea one of the many things to strike off my bucket list. I must admit to being more

addicted to kimchi pancakes and Mount Sorak than chicken rice and Mount Faber. While on this island, the Seonggerup Folk Village and Seongsun Sunrise Peak are worth a visit before you return to the modernity of Seoul.

Korea’s capital seems like a misfit in a good sense. You’d wonder how a bustling metropolitan city can co-exist with nature’s grandeur side-by-side, but these thoughts soon get distracted by road-side food stalls teeming with steamed corn and rice cakes; multistorey shopping havens; as well as fruit and vegetable market labyrinths. Dongdaemun is a shopper’s dream and a husband’s nightmare, while a peek of the Presidential Residence (Cheong Wa Dae) further reinforces the past and present of this nation. Seoul, borrowing from a well-known tag-line, is indeed ‘soul-ful’.

Side-stepping away from the hustle and bustle, there are areas within the country where you can venture and take in the heralded beauty of its seasonal nature. Take for example Yong Pyong Resort, which is a 200km drive away from Seoul. Unforgiving snowy conditions represent a boon for skiers and the resort’s coffers, justifying its reputation as ‘Korea’s Ski Mecca’. Hitch a cable car ride up to the peak of Mt. Balwang and you’ll never forget the next 18 minutes of your life (unless you’re an acrophobic). The scenery, depending on the season, is as breathtaking as it gets.

Even writing a 500-page guide wouldn’t do justice to a heritage and culture as deep and as strong as Korea’s. Experiences such as eating dried cuttlefish while standing on a cliff or sipping caramel macchiato in the middle of Geongbukgung Palace, were breaths of fresh air that a cocooned city boy like me needed. The sometimes long travelling times between places construed to make me reflect on life thus far. To give my two cents worth, all that came up was the word ‘contentment’ – a rare value within the rat race of our society. On my last day, as I tucked myself into some seafood chigae (stew) and rice, sheltered from the frosty cold outside, I thought: this is contentment. RØMP/059

Romancing

Hong Kong

Love may not be the first thing to come to mind when one thinks of a bustling, efficient city such as Hong Kong. Yet, the cosmopolitan metropolis boasts plenty of gems for dreamers looking for a romantic destination – from the breathtaking view at The Peak, to the joyrides of Ocean Park that will get your heart pumping in a good way. This season, Melissa Zhu takes you through some of the best spots in Hong Kong for traditional romantics and thrill seekers alike. Traditional Romantics: Old-fashioned Romance Accommodation: The Hullett House Hotel offers visitors a dose of oldworld charm reminiscent of 19th century Hong Kong. Housed in a beautifully-restored colonial building that is a popular spot for camerawielding tourists, the hotel also provides an immensely exclusive experience, with just ten designer suites in the entire establishment. Each has its own terrace and unique theme. Choices include a Chinese Imperial Suite decorated with Qing dynasty murals, an English pastoralstyle suite elegantly embellished with 26 hand-painted native songbirds, and one featuring colourful China pop art. 060/RØMP

Hullet House reservations: Visit http://www. hulletthouse.com/ or call +852 3988 0000.

Entertainment: Start off with a ride on the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour, an inexpensive means of public transportation that links Hong Kong Island with Kowloon. When taken at night, the ferry offers a fantastic, unobstructed view of the city lights. Another romantic spot with a great view is, of course, Victoria Peak (‘The Peak’), one of Hong Kong’s most well-known attractions. Instead of taking a bus or taxi, try riding the Peak Tram, one of the world’s oldest surviving funicular railways (railways where cables are attached to the vehicle to move it up and down a steep slope). Dating back to 1888, the tram is positioned up to 396 metres above sea level and gives you an unforgettable view of the harbour and surrounding buildings due to the steep incline of its path. At the top of The Peak, enjoy a 360 degree, panoramic view of Hong Kong from the Sky Terrace 428 at The Peak Tower, a viewing platform 428 metres above sea level. Dinner: Caprice at Four Seasons Hotel (8 Finance Street, Tel: +852 3196 8888), a Michelin three-star French restaurant, is undoubtedly one of the places to hit for traditional romantics on a dinner date. The sixth-floor restaurant offers a classic European fine-dining ambience, with a view of Victoria

Harbour, crystal chandeliers dripping from the ceiling and immaculately presented dishes. Even its wine and cheese collections are famed for their quality and range. Note, however, that due to its overwhelming popularity, advance reservations are highly advised.

Thrill-Seekers: Quirky sites for an unconventional getaway Accommodation: Those with a taste for avant-garde design will surely appreciate a stay at J Plus (Causeway Bay). The boutique hotel designed entirely by internationally-acclaimed French designer Philippe Starck offers a complete experience at its hip location at Causeway bay, combining a stellar view with special deals at the myriad shopping, dining, and lifestyle venues in the area. J Plus was voted one of the trendiest hotels in Hong Kong and China by users of popular travel site Tripadvisor in January 2012. J Plus reservations: Visit http://www. jplushongkong.com or call +852 3196 9000

Entertainment: Spend the day going through as many of the exhilarating rides at Ocean Park as you can manage. Some of the scariest are the “Hair Raiser”, Hong Kong’s fastest roller-coaster that hurtles passengers through the air at 88km/h, and “The Flash”, which spins 360 degrees through the air at a height of 22m, which giving you an unconventional, if still gorgeous, view of the Park and its surrounding waters. Tamer attractions are the “Polar Adventure” and “Aqua City”, where you can catch sights of arctic animals and underwater creatures respectively.

can be fun for couples looking for a noisy night out, but it also offers more cozy nightspots such as Chocolate Bar (2 Lan Kwai Fong, +852 2810 1788), which is quiet enough to share an intimate conversation over drinks at while soaking in the sights outside. Dinner: Ditch the sit-down restaurant meal and inject some fun into your dinner date by having it at the Temple Street Night Market (between Temple Street and Jordan Road), where street snack stalls and roadside restaurants cater to hungry shoppers. Have garlic and peppercorn laden crabs with beer at Temple Spice Crabs, a famous roadside eatery located near Jordan Street, or skewers of fried pork innards dipped in curry sauce at one of the many street stalls that dot the narrow lanes of the market. A mainstay in Hong Kong movies such as Stephen Chow’s The God of Cookery (1996), Temple Street is a hotspot of activity when the sun goes down. In between bites, immerse yourselves in an authentic local atmosphere with fortune tellers, Chinese opera performances and street vendors selling everything from fake antiques to hand-embroidered clothing.

In the evening, head to Lan Kwai Fong to fully experience the buzz of the city’s nightlife. The famous drinking area is lined with its fair share of rowdy, expat-frequented pubs that

Advice Cølumn

BGR BLUES 1

My girlfriend has just left for the States to pursue her university degree, but I can’t travel with her due to work commitments. I know this is about trust and hoping for the best, but as much as I don’t want our relationship to fail, I don’t believe that Skype and e-mails can bridge that distance. The natural tendency to feel insecure and distant is pretty much eating into my soul. They say that Long Distance Relationships (LDRs) never work out – how can I prevent this prophecy from happening? Like any relationship, trust is a key ingredient for success. Another factor which makes relationships work is both emotional and physical intimacy. These factors are inevitably more difficult to attain and maintain through long distance relationships. But before you go into planning how to maintain a long distance relationship with your gung-ho enthusiasm, ask yourself this: are the both of you honestly ready to dedicate a lot of time and make a lot of sacrifices for each other? • “No, I’m not.” Be kind to yourself and your girlfriend and just let go. If you persist with the long distance relationship, things might end up badly for the both of you. • “Maybe, anything.” This is your relationship, and that means you have to take ownership and responsibility for it. Take time to decide and consider the pros and cons of a long distance relationship. Once you have come to a decision, refer to the advice above and below this paragraph if you need it. • “Definitely a yes, without a doubt.” Good for you. Being resolved to be devoted and dedicated to being with your girlfriend will give your long distance relationship a larger chance of survival. Here are some tips to help you:

064/RØMP

Mr Aloysius Chow gives us advice on the most pressing issues at present.

1. Put aside time. Heard of the old adage ‘out of sight, out of mind’? Contrary to what you suggested, maintaining consistent communication over long-distance calls and the internet will keep your relationship alive. Although these are virtual tools and cannot eliminate the physical distance between you and your girlfriend, these are the most economical tools available. If you have some spare cash lying around, check out point 2. Also, this means that you and your girlfriend have to put aside a scheduled time for this communication to take place. Both of you will have to sacrifice nail bars, LAN shops and the like in exchange for a better relationship. 2. Plan. Plan to visit your girlfriend. If you have spare cash lying around you, do it. If you aren’t able to afford it, work for it. Remember that at the beginning of this column, you professed that you will dedicate time and make sacrifices for each other – substitute that overpriced barista-made brews for instant mixes, or get an extra job (since you’d probably have more time in the absence your girlfriend). These visits will not only make your heart flutter with excitement, but also compensate the intimacy lost

while you and your girlfriend were on different continents. 3. Use your time apart constructively. Another adage which describes certain couples more than others is that “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” This is the time for you to work on your romantic ideas. Some common ideas are to write a song or poem for your girlfriend or compile an album of the soppy songs that describe how much you miss her. A slightly more costly option would be to order flowers over the Internet (not virtual ones, please!), or her favourite snack which cannot be found in America. These are ideas to remind your girlfriend that she has you pining for her constantly. Once the both of you meet, these intense feelings of missing each other will help deepen the appreciation for each other.

Advisor Al Real identity: My boyfriend claims to have been suffering from schizophrenia, ever since he experienced a family tragedy as a child. He often displays mood swings, and lashes out at me frequently over trivial matters or no reason at all. Once, it got so bad to the point that he even threatened to hit me. He interacts perfectly fine with his friends, and it seems that his ‘schizophrenia’ only surfaces when he’s alone with me. I want to ‘be there’ for him and accept him for who he is, but it’s getting difficult. Could it be that he’s just using his condition as an excuse to keep me in an emotionally abusive relationship?

2

First and foremost, it is imperative to clarify what schizophrenia is because it is a serious and debilitating mental illness that should not be taken lightly. Schizophrenia is the term used to describe a group of severe brain disorders which results in people interpreting reality differently. These different types of interpretations of reality are clinically identified as delusions, disordered thinking and hallucinations. An important point to note is that schizophrenia does not mean that the person suffering from it has ‘split’ or ‘multiple’ personalities. Many forms of the uninformed media have perpetuated this definition, which has caused the contemporary confusion about what schizophrenia entails. For your sake, do convince him to see a doctor immediately if he believes

that he does have schizophrenia. Early treatment can limit the problems your boyfriend might face if left untreated. Another reason for getting him to see a doctor is to clear your doubts about whether your boyfriend is really ill. Something you might want to ponder on is why you would want to ‘be there’ for your boyfriend when you feel that your boyfriend is keeping you in an ‘emotionally abusive relationship’. Masochism most definitely does not reflect love or any other positive feelings. When you feel that you have to been in an abusive – either physically or emotionally – you have to start asking yourself some questions. Normally, we shy away and avoid pain – again either physically or emotionally – because it hurts. If you don’t do this, there is probably something holding you back; something you must

discover through some quiet reflection or if need be, a heart-to-heart talk with someone you can confide in and trust. The reason for doing this is to take measures to prevent your current or future relationships from becoming abusive. The positive part about this entire situation is the potential growth you can get from learning about yourself and about the type of man you can be with. The key to maximising this learning process is to be honest with yourself, because only then can you learn to be a better person. Regardless of where the root of the problem is, remember that your safety is of paramount importance. Stay away from any possible physical confrontations with your boyfriend, and alert your family or the police should you be physically threatened or harmed. RØMP/065

The Power Ah,

here it comes again, St. Valentine’s Day, when cupid pierces unknowing hearts with his searing arrows. A time of consumerism at its finest with chocolates, jewellery and cards shoved down your throat with almost every step you take, at triple their prices. It is the day of the beheading of a Roman martyr somehow becoming bafflingly synonymous with romance in modern times. A lot of the association to love on this day is credited to Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry. Gee, thanks a lot, Jeff. Because of you, people either have to spend tons of cash in mid-February, or be painfully aware of how alone they are. But, people might have a third choice - sod Valentine’s Day off. Be happy being single! I feel the sharp intake of breath that almost sucks this page clean off its bindings, but hear me out. Why not think of yourself as the significant other that needs to be pampered on this special occasion? Many people refer to February 14th as Singles Awareness Day, which almost appropriately has the initials S.A.D. But it doesn’t have to be a day of wallowing in the muck of self-pity. Most couples will recite that old vomit-inducing line of how every day should be like Valentine’s, not just one day out of a year. But you know what? It makes sense. By 068/RØMP

One

of

that logic, single people shouldn’t treat the occasion as anything other than shops and restaurants trying to make a quick buck. Instead, save that money, and spend it on yourself.

You probably have other single friends as well. Ask them out! Make a day of it. Head to a pub for a few pints and who knows, maybe you’ll find your very own valentine there. Or stay home and do absolutely nothing – a sorely underrated option in my opinion. Being single offers you the perks of doing whatever the hell you want. Take the day off, laze around on the couch, have a cheat day on your diet. In fact, being single in and of itself is underrated. I never have to fight with myself over which movie to watch, or fight with myself at all actually, because that would be insane. How many times have our friends in relationships turned to us and whined over the drama that’s in their life, or worse still, tried to drag us into it? I’m not saying relationships and love aren’t great, but some people make it out to be the ‘be all and end all’ of life. Though,

there is a difference in falling in love and being in love. Falling in love is wonderful: you’re like an Alzheimer’s patient, and every day with your partner seems new to you. Your heart skips a beat when you see him or her, and life is like a Disney music video. Being in love is... fine. It’s okay; nothing to shout about.

I’m going to go a step further and say being single is awesome. There’s less drama, less pressure on yourself, and more freedom! You don’t have to please anyone other than yourself with how you look or act, nor do you have to spend a truckload of money on several occasions, unless you really want to. I’ve weighed up the pros and cons, and I’ve found that although being in love has higher peaks, it also has the lowest valleys. Being single also offers great pros, but doesn’t serve up crushing depression as a con. I’ll take that, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. This February 14th, go out, be single and be proud.

individuals to share their memories of and thoughts on their first loves. “We all have that one person in our lives that we think is our first love, which we will always remember. But as we get older and more mature, I believe we will eventually find that one other person to spend a life time with. And that doesn’t necessarily have to be our first.” – Emili Tay

“My first love was really elegant and her chuckles were oh-so-cute. It was a pure, simple and sweet feeling, probably akin to indulging in caramel ice cream.”

“I’ve had many first loves. But at 25, I’ve realise that often, they are manifestations of infatuation and flights of fancy. Perhaps love is really a continuum - with no start, no ends, only in-betweens.” – Berton Tan

– Ong Gim Teng

“I fell in love with my first girlfriend when we were working together. Her smile was totally captivating, and her innocence drew me even deeper. It got me willingly hooked and it felt so amazing.”

“Travelling! It allows me to experience the world, meet all sorts of people and understand different cultures. What’s even better is that I can discover the beauty of life, and gain moments that may change me forever.”
