et us bask in the patriotic season by espousing the nuances and niceties of our metropolitan culture! Sure, we’ve had our fleeting squabbles about artistic self-expression versus our overt obsession with order (#FreeStickerLady #FTW). And yes, it never fails to plague our senses whenever the topic of an overwhelming third-wave migration comes to mind. Still and all, let us not disregard our roots, but instead appreciate the simpler things that come with residing in our sublime yet humble city-state. This issue, we scour every nook and cranny on the island to inject some spice into our system (Spice: The Variety of Life, pg 49), which guarantees to tickle taste buds. We also dip our hands into our melting pot of upwardly mobile musical types to showcase the emerging Baybeats-worthy bands in the scene (Smashin’ Beats, pg 29). On a larger scale, our cover boy/ local humdinger Nathaniel Ho unleashes the kraken and shows the world a thing or two about the bang-up music and swanky video-editing prowess of Singapore (NATional Phenom, pg 14). Shopping-wise, we note that the online fashion community here is thriving sizably, and the girls are coming together to present to you homegrown labels galore via Chic.Kiss.Love (www.chickisslove.com) - rumoured to be a super epic fashion event - come 22 July at Zouk. But to my homeboys, take fright not at being left behind; we’ve sifted through an array of online haunts to bring you the Cadillac of male-oriented local blog shops in the name of retail therapy (Big Boys Buy, pg 40). So here’s to Singapore - the city that never sleeps and the concrete jungle where dreams are made! Signing off, Rachel & The Team

SUPERMODELS: LISTEN UP!
Having graced the judges’ panel on reality series SupermodelMe for two seasons, veteran model and actress Ase Wang lets us in on striving in the seemingly cut-throat modelling industry. After all, her sixth place in the Top 10 most sexiest women in the world (according to a poll in Thailand) lands her much credence. 010/RØMP
What does it take to be a supermodel in Singapore? Ambition, dedication, and not being scared to fail. Stand out and don’t be afraid to show your true colors. Models still have voices. The sooner you know how to sell yourself as a brand, the sooner you will succeed.
How would you advice someone who aspires to be one? A lot of girls go into the industry thinking it’s going to be an easy job, though it can be easy money. Sometimes we’ve 18 hours of work, little sleep, and have to be mobile. Open yourself to travel everywhere so you can get experience with different work surroundings. Always be professional, always be on time for work and be nice to the crew and people you work with. Clients don’t work with models who are difficult.
What are the steps he or she needs to take? Gather information about the industry before you commit to it. Live a healthy life! If you party like a crazy person, don’t bother being a model. If that’s the kind of lifestyle you want, get another job. Your job will be based on your looks. Take good care, go to the gym; I’m a big fan of working out! Every model needs to work out. No excuses! Eat and sleep well - that is part of your job. Also, find yourself a good team of agents that you know you can work with and that will push for you. You will never succeed in this business without a good team.
Who are the local veteran supermodels in Singapore that they should look up to? Sheila Sim is a perfect example of a professional and ambitious model. She’s well-travelled, takes good care of herself, is very down to earth and most of all is super photogenic. She has worked very hard to get where she is.
What qualities old-timers have in common? I don’t think it’s a matter of old timers or new models. What the successful
models have in common is being professional. That will never change in generations to come. Everything else changes. The looks of models change every year and styles change every season, but one thing that always stays the same with being a model is being professional and branding yourself!
The industry is definitely growing; they just had the Audi Fashion Festival, a huge step for Singapore. It’s getting bigger and better every year!
How does the SupermodelMe series help boost a young model’s career?
Because the industry is still not 100% at its fullest yet - the entertainment industry in Singapore is growing, but it will take some time. Covers and endorsements usually go to celebs, as clients think their product will sell better as a result. That’s the case everywhere, not just in Singapore. Models will get their spotlight when the industry grows a bit more. Sheila is getting a lot of attention now in Singapore by breaking through the model stereotype. Getting more spotlight will happen to those with a smart team behind them, and the ability to ‘sell’ and brand their models to become celebrities.
In order to be a full-time model, you need exposure. You don’t get anywhere without it. SupermodelMe gave the girls a huge chance to expose themselves on national TV on a program that is watched in many more countries throughout Asia. That builds up noise. Branding yourself comes along with a lot of work. That being said, it’s a good trial for girls to see if they can handle the business. It’s educational for girls about the bad and the goods about this industry. Some girls may come out wanting to be models and realize they are ready, and some might realize this wasn’t for them. At the end of the day they can still say they had SupermodelMe as an experience in life.
How have the previous winners gained? The show got the previous winners contracts in agencies both in Singapore and Hong Kong. A lot of girls are unable to clinch contacts by themselves, so our shows provide a foundation to help plant them in the business.
Describe the potential of the modelling industry in Singapore. Every model and agency that I’ve spoken to agree that Singapore has fantastic photographers and make-up artistes. Models in Singapore are promised awesome pictures to use for their books. Singapore is becoming more open now with an increase in events and fashion shows, resulting in many more jobs available for models. Back in the day, events were small and so were the fashion shows. There’s a lot more work to be done now in Singapore.
Why do you think supermodels don’t get much spotlight in Singapore?
Unlike the United States, where modelling agents are abound, Singapore has few companies that manage talents. What alternatives should an aspiring model turn to? I’ve been in the entertainment industry for over 10 years now. I don’t think Singapore lacks companies for modelling; don’t forget Singapore is very small, so you can’t have too many modelling agents, which would pose a big problem. I think the current size of the industry is just right. If you’re talking about talent management, that’s a whole other industry belonging to entertainment, actors, hosts, etc. That is something Singapore can definitely have a lot more of. It’s missing a good management company for actors. That’s why I manage myself in Singapore, since the market is smaller.

RØMP discovers the enterprising team behind VanityTrove, who vow to take their customers’ breath away every month. “It’ll appeal to the city lady who is adventurous, loves testing and learning about new things, enjoys educating herself and is independent enough to pamper herself. Yes, it’s an art even with beauty products! She cares about skincare as well as bath and body products because she understands good skin is the best foundation anyone can have; she enjoys testing cosmetics because she is constantly pulling together the seasons’ hottest looks; she has fun with other little knick-knacks she finds out about. And she can do this all with VanityTrove,” adds Douglas. The concept behind receiving scheduled gifts came from “fukubukuro” of Japan, where a selection of random products from different brands are packed into a mystery bag and sold on a discount. VanityTrove then birthed serendipitously with the inspiration of beauty boxes.
To boot, the brand has built many partnerships with beauty labels world wide from Japan and Taiwan to the UK. Working alongside them to launch products and increase their partners brand awareness, VanityTrove also integrates an interactive process of garnering feedback from their subscribers about their recommendations. “We’re revolutionising the beauty world in Singapore bit-by-bit. People are requesting for VanityTrove all around the world, so we go where there are requests!” Subscribe to your monthly troves at: http://www.vanitytrove.com.
E
arly bloomer Douglas Gan, 28, started his career in
the sales line as a young teenager. The undaunted youth has persevered and is now the co-founder and director of his own company. So just what are the makings of a boss and an enterprising spirit?
Describe your career prior to founding VanityTrove.
I’ve had 13 years of experience in the industry. But before that, when I was approximately 13 to 16 years old, I’ve worked as a part time packer before upgrading to a part time sales executive when I was in secondary school. I also was a waiter at banquets at a few hotels and worked in Lycos Asia as a food reviewer.
What was your educational route before working?
I was in a polytechnic but would have dropped out if not for my mom, who wanted me to have a cert. Nevertheless, the school taught me a lot and if given a chance, I’d go through studying at Ngee Ann Polytechnic again!
What made you choose this line of work? I love IT. I was 14 years old when I first encountered the fast, democratic and global Internet. So I thought: what better way to start a business than to start it online?
How did you get involved in this venture? I went to Japan a few times and came across the Fukubukuro concept. Subsequently, I came up with the idea of merging the beauty industry with this concept in South
East Asia. Today, VanityTrove runs in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
How’s the journey starting something from scratch?
Tough. We needed to pack and market goods, get brands to provide samples, handle customer service, understand beauty trends, and so much more.
What’s your vision for the company in the long run?
To help women discover beauty.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own online business?
Start with making money from day one. If that’s not possible, then start with ensuring that you’ve enough capital from the beginning. If you’re not resourceful enough to figure that out, then it’s better that you seek other means of employment instead.
What do you think is the most important resource and why?
Tenacity. It’s a personal trait. Being tenacious helps to acquire resources required to grow both the individual and the business.
What qualities does a team need to possess for a successful venture?
A team needs to possess dynamism, mutual trust and respect. You must give each other space and allowance for mistakes, in order to learn and grow.
Describe the risks and sacrifices involved.
Other than opportunity costs involved, one also faces the risk of losing confidence and finances.
What have you learned in your line of work?
Whoa... Plenty! (laughs) Working with people isn’t easy. Not everyone’s the same. You’ve got to understand their character, personality traits, the way they see things, etc. So the biggest thing I learned in my line of work (running companies) is to ensure that I can work well with people. I’m still trying, but it hasn’t been easy.
We’ve 10 enticing VanityTrove sets to give away! Tell us why you deserve a treat at editorial@rompmagazine.com, with your name, NRIC number and contact. Contest ends 15 Aug 2012.

HO
Arguably one of the most crackerjack music projects in the local music scene thus far, Nat Ho’s super slick and epic music video, ‘UNLEASHED’, which chalked up about a whopping $11 grand, has won the hearts of many. Within a month of the full digital release of the EP on Youtube, it attracted 204, 917 views and garnered raving support from netizens, industry veterans and undying fans.
“Just because I
sing and dance and I’m Asian, they assume that I’m copying K-pop.
”
016/RØMP
What has it been like garnering such good response for ‘Unleashed’? Incredibly heartening! The whole team put in many months of hard work, and it’s always nice to know that the efforts are appreciated. This is only the first project and I hope to get better with each new one.
was it at all expected? I do try to manage my own expectations, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. I guess the overwhelming feedback was also due in part that the local music industry hasn’t seen something like this for a while. It’s said that one should be the change they wish to see, so this is my contribution to that.
what was the artistic workflow in composing ‘Unleashed’? When I write songs, sometimes it’s a melodic hook that comes first, sometimes it’s a phrase that I eventually craft a song around. For Unleashed it was kinda simultaneous. Unleashed was written based on a combination of my own experience as well as observations of Singaporean society. Here, societal expectations are high, and we are all expected to conform - to a point where it’s almost robotic - hence the deliberate, heavy-use of auto-tune for this track - but at the same time, I realised that a lot of people are not happy because they are not doing what their hearts really want to do. So Unleashed was written to encourage people to pursue their dreams and passions, because I believe that’s the secret to happiness.
What’s the best & worst comment you’ve received about your music? I think the best comment that I received was that they like my music and that they are proud that I’m Singaporean. When I started this project, aside from my own career aspirations, the overarching vision, really, was to showcase as much local talent as possible; from the music and video production, to the CGI and even the outfits I wear in the video. It was truly homegrown. The worst comments were that I couldn’t sing since I used auto-tune and that I was trying to copy K-pop. I wasn’t demoralized because of that, but rather, I was frustrated because these comments obviously arose from a lack of understanding of the entire video and ideas behind it. I grew up in a time before the Hallyu wave even existed; my influences were the boybands and artistes of the 90s, and I consider Pop icons like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake my idols. They sing and dance too. But just because I sing and dance and I’m Asian, they assume that I’m copying K-pop. At the end of the day, it isn’t even about who copies what. It’s really about the music and the ideas that each artiste is trying to bring across - where you’re Pop or Pavarotti.
Describe the work that went into the making of the video and song. Long, arduous and expensive, but incredibly fulfilling. I think every artist needs to “struggle” for their art, so that when success finally comes, it will be sweeter.
What are the high & low points of your career so far? I’m a person who’s always raring to go, but of course when it comes to gigs, whether acting or singing, there will be months where the market is slightly quieter. Those months used to be pretty unbearable because I was so impatient. But now I just use it to upgrade myself, whether it’s taking dance lessons, working on more material, or even just simply catching up with friends. I think I’m slowly beginning to find a balance, and that makes me a happier person. As for the high point of my career, I always believe ‘The Best is Yet to Be’, so I’m looking forward to that!
Describe your journey as a budding artiste. From my modelling days till now, I think I’ve always been fortunate to have a lot of help and support from friends and clients, such as advertisers and PR agencies. These people are really my angels, and I’m incredibly thankful for them, which is why I’ve called my company Seraph Media.
Let us in on what’s a day in the life of Nat Ho is like! It varies greatly! Some days I can be packed throughout the day with “work” like dance rehearsals, or studio recording, or event appearances and road shows, other days it’s more mundane stuff like catching up with company admin and paperwork. Sometimes it’s watching movies and YouTube for inspiration. I really love my job!
WHAT’S THE MESSAGE through your music?
YOU’RE
conveyING
I think each song in my EP conveys a different message. Unleashed is about pursuing one’s dreams, Brevity was written when a friend’s husband passed away, and it’s about dealing with loss of a loved one. Dance DJ is really about enjoying the moment. Psycho Love is about bad relationships and repeated cycles, and will hopefully serve as a warning to recognize those signs and deal with it. Generally, I hope that my music can inspire and encourage people to better themselves. At the very least, I want them to just enjoy the music!
Where do you plan to expand your fan base? I plan to eventually be based in the US. I know it’s a crazy plan and really tough, but I guess my career history has shown that I’m a sucker for challenges. I think at the very least, we owe it to ourselves to give it our best shot!
What are your plans for the coming months? Gain some regional exposure through various projects. It’s gonna be difficult to just jump to the US straightaway, so right now I’m just taking baby steps. Either way, it’s important to keep moving forward.
What advice would you give to youths who aspire to be like you? Do what you think in your heart is right, for the heart is never wrong. As for everything else, just send ‘em haters to the gators. It’s your own life, and it’s really nobody else’s business.
What’s important to you in life? Perseverance and Happiness.
How’s the support from home? Amazing. I’m thankful I have such an understanding and supportive family.
What’s your plan for the distant future? World domination. (laughs)
Which local artiste inspires you? Why? Stefanie Sun. She has a very strong idea of what she wants, and she doesn’t let other people sway her. I think that’s admirable.
Any personal motto which you subscribe to? Not so much a motto, but rather a quote that inspires me - “When you make a decision, the whole universe conspires to make it happen.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Basically, you need to know and decide on what it is you want, before you can achieve it. RØMP/017

WHO IS:
TIFFANY WARNE
018/RØMP
SupermodelMe Season 3’s winner, Tiffany Warne, a chipper lass of Austrian and Indian descent who brims with much promise, shares her journey to triumphing over the 12 other model hopefuls on the thriving reality series. How has it been since emerging as the winner of SupermodelMe? Every single day I find myself laughing in disbelief that I actually did it! Entering SupermodelMe was the best thing I ever did, because I’m finally modelling internationally and living my dream, instead of sitting home in Perth solving puzzles and eating cereal. I’m finally following my dream!
What does it mean to you, on a personal level, to have won this? I’m a huge believer in goal-setting. I set the goal to win SupermodelMe months in advance, even though I knew it was pretty ridiculous. To have achieved something like this is incredible. I took a huge risk quitting university to enter, but I knew I could do it. To have won really proved to myself that I’m not entirely insane when I choose to follow my dreams.
What prompted you to join the competition in the first place? After seeing previous winners achieve so much after this competition, and given that my favourite thing to do is talk and be loud, I figured there would be no better way to start my future modelling/TV career than through
this show. I still remember when I found out I got in: I screamed and ran around and then sat down and cried because I was so happy.
When and how did you discover your passion for modelling? When I stopped looking like a bucktoothed, bespectacled tadpole and finally realised that being awkwardly skinny and taller than all the boys in my class wasn’t necessarily a bad thing! When I was 13 and no longer wearing my hideous glasses, I entered a modelling competition and it all snowballed from there. Ever since then I’ve become crazy passionate about modelling, there’s nothing else I love more - except maybe cheeseburgers!
Describe the highs and lows of the competition. The biggest highs would be the amazing friendships I made with the girls, getting to meet and be mentored by the sex-on-legs Lisa S. I want to host SupermodelMe season 100 if she ever wants to pass on the job. Oh, and winning was a pretty significant high. Lows? Having every single viewer watch me cry like a baby in so many episodes. I promise I don’t usually cry that much.
What’s your secret to winning? Bribing the judges! (laughs) Obviously not... Secret? I always believed in myself no matter what. Even if I have a giant pimple on photo shoot day, just maintaining a positive attitude can get me through.
What advice would you give to the contestants in the subsequent seasons of SupermodelMe? Even when you want to cry and get on a plane and fly straight home, don’t even think about it! Just remain yourself, enjoy it and be proud of achieving something that most people aren’t brave enough to even try. Oh, and don’t forget to do your washing or you’ll end up like two weeks into the competition with no clean underwear. And that could really set you back.
And to the other aspiring models out there? If you love something so much that it doesn’t feel like work and if it’s worth giving cheeseburgers up for, then it’s worth pursuing. No matter what people tell you or how ridiculous you feel, take the risk. There’s nothing else to lose except your future happiness!
Viewers can now look forward to SupermodelMe Season 4, which will be in collaboration with Singapore’s biggest fashion event of 2013, the Audi Fashion Festival (AFF). For more information, visit http://www.supermodelme.tv. RØMP/019

Don’t Leave Our Music Industry Behind Text by Way-J (Entertainment Writer) and Shereen (Entertainment Sub-Editor)
Fever Avenue gives her two cents worth on the pickle of our local music talents.
W
hat exactly do Singaporean musicians lack that international musicians seem to have aplenty? Musicians have shown again and again that they are as, if not more, talented as Katy Perry, Rihanna or whoever it is who’s taking up a lot of local radio airtime. The problem doesn’t lie with the musicians themselves; the problem comes from the absence of support from both the people to the big G. It’s undeniable that the ever-growing foreign presence has flooded the market with a huge amount of music, so much so that we overlook the music made here. But it is no longer about having too many that you’re spoilt for choice, it’s about the lack of pride of our own music. We can’t force feed Singaporean music down one’s throat but what we can do is abolish the mentality that music made locally is rubbish. Singapore is nothing short of world-class now – we are a first-world country with one of the top three GDPs in the world, why then should we think Singaporean-made music isn’t good enough? Yet in the 60s, the local scene was flourishing. Bands like Thunderbirds and The Crescendos even toured regionally and boasted legions of adoring fans. Perhaps disenchanted with how the situation is locally, music acts now have gone from playing small gigs in front of meager crowds to pushing their work overseas on their own budget – simply because the music scene here is not as encouraging as it was four decades back. Even in 2012 where social media is king, Singaporean bands are still taking the old-school DIY route of promoting their music. It is heart-breaking to see how musicians have to seek support away from home. When asked what the desired outcome of a “better” industry was, Fandy Razak, a musician from the local band The Great Spy Experiment shares, “I feel the desired outcome is really to have everyone giving a chance. Not too long ago, a local band/musician is dismissed even before they are heard. Unfair innit?
020/RØMP
BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
So to me, I feel every band or musician just wants to be heard at least once. Whether that support will spill over to the rest of the world, is quite secondary because sometimes home support is all you need to push you even further. Of course there’s the dollars and cents aspect to it. It would be good if everyone is willing to pay for the music cos everything costs money these days.”
receive radio airplay asides from specialized segments.
Saiful Idris, the lead singer of the band continues, “Whatever Singaporeans bands do, it contributes to the growth of her culture, her history, her identity. It’d just make a much better story if more Singaporeans were a part of it. Do we need to go global? Honestly, I don’t think Singaporeans would care that much if one or two bands make it on the global stage. But if there’s a whole bunch of bands who are doing well out there, if Singapore is recognised by the right people as a place where good music comes from, I reckon it might just make Singaporeans wonder if they’re missing something,”
Of course with the help of festivals like Baybeats and UpToTheSky as well as places that support local music like Timbre and Blu Jaz, our musicians do have rooms to showcase their talent and it is definitely helping the industry progress.
Perhaps the crux of the matter is that audiences for local music are shrinking; as a whole, they do not actively seek out talented local acts, and this stifles the growth of the industry. Bands and solo musicians alike often have small, cult-like followings, and rarely does a local music act
What has triumphed though over the past years, though? “Passion. You’ve people doing this while swimming upstream, putting everything they have into it,” Fandy says. Saiful on the other hand, expresses his admiration for Leonard Soosay, who despite all is still keeping on.
What do we hope to see in the future then? Fandy says, “That we return to the heydays of the 60s and 70s. And may the government not put a stop to that again.” Independence made us one of the world’s top countries but is one not allowed a different path anymore in order for us not to stifle the economics’ growth? We espy.. RØMP takes a glimpse into the zany world of Ian Kong, where he takes wearable art, set design and installation art to a whole new Gaga level.
How would you describe yourself as an artist? Well, I’m naive, foolish and a hopeless romantic; I indulge in these flaws - as well as the consequences of them - as I believe most dreams and art come from weaknesses and dissatisfaction with the present.
What’s your story? What do you think made you the creative person you are now? It most definitely began with the support and encouragement that came from my parents, ever since I drew my first drawing at the age of two. Dinosaurs, cars, military and Pokemon drawings later, I detoured into a triple science education before a homecoming in junior college when I took art again. From then on I’ve been getting opportunities to meet talented and creative individuals; make crazy friends that I can be open with and share my insecurities, fears and worries with; as well as use all these experiences, both good and bad, to inform what I create or seek to express.
022/RØMP
Describe the high and low points of your artistic journey. In retrospect, the high points came with the low points. Being commissioned to create wearable art for events came with the stress and pressure to outdo whatever I’ve done before. Being so certain of an artistic vision, drafting, planning and feeling all satisfied with it only to be be settled with hiccups, delays and insecurities later on. I guess it stems from never being completely satisfied with any creative work that makes it a draft, a rehearsal, a work-in-progress, to perpetuate this very journey.
When and how did your passion manifest? I would think that it began with searching for a sense of belonging, altering my behaviour and playing characters to adapt to the different groups of people I found myself with, in various environments and stages of my life. This became passion halfway through my formal art training in junior college, when I was so uncertain and doubtful of an identity and a voice, yet felt so strongly for the creative field, a particular style to call my own. That’s when I decided to take self-pity off the ‘Top Things to Do’ list, and attempt to merge the way I lived with the way I created.
Tell us more about your works. Love it or hate it - and I tell myself this as well - all my work has its own vested meaning and symbols. Be it a subtle social commentary or a cathartic expression, this conscious or sub-conscious weaving in of narratives and personal drama is what makes my creative projects precious to me. Art, to me, is a negotiation of life; both a mirror as well as a dream.
Where do you get inspiration? Anything and everything the heart and the mind can agree on, as well as fight about. A saying, a trend, a dream, a friend; decisions (good and bad), experiences and emotions... I can go on and on!
Which artist inspires you and why? I’m inspired by surreal creative types like Lady Gaga, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Francis Bacon, Michel Gondry, Tim Walker, and Alexander McQueen. Yes, I’m being greedy and can’t settle for one as all of them, cutting across varying mediums of expression, have such a delectable mix of fantasy and real-life references that make for memorable art. Creative works from them go beyond being a pretty picture or an amazing outfit. Instead, they tell stories; they reference truth and lies, perception and deception to become truly influential and thought provoking.
What are your thoughts on the Singapore Art scene? Yay or nay? You’ve just opened a can of worms. To be fair, there’s a noticeable increase in interest in the arts and there are talented individuals with amazing work in the scene, but I feel that the progress is not equal to the potential. Pragmatism is as important as expression and nurturing creativity. I can only dream for a very near future when investment in the arts is not entirely determined by the profits gained from such a gesture. RØMP/023

Seeker of Hope: Works by Jia Aili Presenting the works of Chinese painter Jia Aili, Seeker of Hope is an exemplification of the not-so-lost traditions and values of the new generation of children that may just be the light at the end of the tunnel. An exhibition that ranges from oil paintings to contemporary installation art, the creator brings forth a notion of principled youths that still stand respectful of old traditions and values amidst the chaos of modern advancement through her works, thereby seeking out a yearning for a possibility for redemption. In conjunction with the gifted artists’ creations, Lyrical Abstraction: Works by Jeremy Sharma and Yeo Shih Yun features two young local artists that focus on the execution of different form of arts in response to the pieces showcased in Seeker of Hope, bringing an outstanding take on conventional and concurrent artworks. Be prepared for an epiphany that questions the meaning of life.

Hosted by the Singapore Art Museum, Not Against Interpretation is a not-so-pretentious stage created to capitalise on the broadness and out-of-the-box musings of contemporary art via a series of projects. To encourage art enthusiasts, the platform communicates to the young and old the idea of an effortless yet contemplative form of art. A reproduction of Singaporean artists Jason Lim and Vincent Leow’s A Flog of Birdies in the 21st Century – a perspective take on the traditional golfing monikers and techniques – is currently showcased, with different interpretations by museum volunteers to further emphasize the actuality that contemporary art can be communicative and open for interpretation by all. 024/RØMP

New Kid on the
Having performed and choreographed numerous live shows throughout South East Asia, LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore) graduate Taryn Erickson is making her professional debut in W!LD RICE’s La Cage Aux Folles. She introduces herself to RØMP and shares her exciting story.
· What spurred your passion for dance and theatre as your career? There are many things that spurred my passion for theatre. As a child - and still - I loved old musical movies. I used to watch the likes of Calamity Jane, West Side Story and almost anything with Judy Garland. I used to sing along and teach myself the choreography. Some of my fondest memories are in my lounge room with those films. While I was put into dance classes from a young age, it was a little while before I decided to pursue it as a career. I was 17 years old, sitting with my careers advisor and he asked me what I was most passionate about, I replied, “making people smile”. I think I may have been being cheeky at the time but it made me think. I would get to do that every day as a performer, and more, I could make someone, laugh, cry, think or be transported to another world. After that thought, I could think of nothing I’d rather spend everyday doing: moving people. · What line of work would you have pursued if not the performing arts? That’s a scary thought. I don’t think I can imagine life without it. If I must choose, it would have to be teaching, dancing, singing, acting. Oh wait, I do that now! I think away from the performing arts, I would probably be a dental nurse as I was trained and working in a practice in Australia before I came to Singapore. I had the best and most supportive team of people at my old practice at Gentle Dental Care. They would let me have days off to go to auditions, and provide me with extra shifts if I was saving to put on a show. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. · What brought you to Singapore? LASALLE did, actually. I heard about the training offered at the school and the chance to work with international artists and styles of theatre. I have never looked back. I love sunny Singapore. · Describe to us your past experience on stage. Were they based locally or overseas. What kind of productions were they? My performance experience spans all over South East Asia. It includes musical theatre, theatre, kids entertainment, pantomimes, corporate functions and hosting. One of my favourite performances was the Eternity tap dog segment of the Sydney 2000 Olympic opening ceremony. It’s really special when you’re a part of something that is of such a large scale. I also got to work with Dean Perry, a tap idol of mine, on La Cage Aux Folles.
block · How do you think this musical would relate to youths? I think the most important theme this musical has beyond the glitter, extravagant colours and elaborate humour, is love. It is the love of family, the love of your partner and the love of self and that is why not only the youth of Singapore but everyone will relate to it. A wise man once said, “Life’s not worth a damn, till you can shout out: I am what I am.” · Share with us your feelings about debuting as a professional dancer. I couldn’t be more excited. La Cage Aux Folles is going to be a fantastic production, with great classic songs in it. Lisa, our choreographer for the show, really inspired us with her tricky yet sassy choreography in the audition - and we are already receiving inspiration videos! It’s going to be spectacular. I can’t wait to start. · How are you prepping yourself? I don’t know if my preparation ever ends. To be able to sing and dance in a show, it’s important to stay fit and practice. I take dance classes, I teach dance classes, I take singing lessons, I give singing lessons and I do Zumba! The more you immerse yourself in everything, the more versatile you stay, and I guess that’s what I try to always do. · How did you score the role in La Cage Aux Folles? I was called to audition for the role. At the audition I performed a monologue, I sang and I tapped my little heart out. It was tough dance call, in preparation for what is to come. I have to say though, it was one of the nicest auditions I have ever been to. Everyone is so friendly, open and honest. Write in to editorial@rompmagazine.com and tell us why you deserve to win a pair of CAT1 tickets to W!LD RICE’s La Cage Aux Folles (31 Jul 2012, 8 pm show). Contest ends on 15 Jul 2012.

Magic Hour Strangeland
Scissor Sisters CASABLANCA RECORDS
Keane INTERSCOPE RECORDS
Described as ‘future pop’ in reference to their cutting-edge genre flexibility, Magic Hour is yet another puree of the American band’s artistry. Often dabbling in experimental genres such as electroclash, nu-disco as well as glam rock in their earlier days, Scissor Sisters’ latest album comprises of wicked lyrical wonders and charged up disco-worthy tracks. From ‘Keep your Shoes On’ (which sounds suspiciously composed by an ADHD child) to the draggy beats of ‘Shady Love’ (with Azealia Banks), the album could not be more remarkable with producers Alex Ridha, Pharrell Williams etc. ‘Inevitable’ is a sultry track that is worthy to be bedded on its’ own.
Getting back on track with the familiar sound akin to that of fellow musicians Coldplay and The Killers, the fourth studio album of the Sussex band was a safe play in comparison to 2008’s Perfect Symmetry. Gone are the experimental days of Radiohead-like compositions, Strangeland speaks to the bona-fide fans as tunes bring back reminiscence of 2004’s hit ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. Lead single ‘Silenced By The Night’ is a mid-tempo track with a mash-up of drums, pianos and their infamous synthesizer. ‘You are Young’, a rather enjoyable ode to blithe adolescence and naivety, has flaunting vocals over plucky piano melodies – but sadly, penned a tad too clichéd.
A Million Lights Cheryl Cole FASCINATION RECORDS Sexy UK sweetheart Cheryl Cole is back with her third studio album, and features songs which she had held back until now. With a variety of hotshot producers including will.i.am, Taio Cruz and Calvin Harris, A Million Lights encompasses tracks that blow the dance-pop and R&B world away. With ‘Call My Name’ produced by crowd-pleaser Calvin Harris (Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’), the lead single is yet another summer anthem that is filled with clean cut electropop beats and catchy vocals. ‘Ghetto Baby’, a collaboration with the glamorous up-and-coming Lana Del Rey, gives a fascinating touch to A Million Lights.

Life In A Beautiful Light Amy Macdonald MELODRAMATIC/MERCURY RECORDS From being a low key singer-songwriter in Scotland to one of Europe’s bestselling artistes, the personable 24-year-old is back with her third album Life In A Beautiful Light. With debut album This Is The Life topping the charts in five countries, and hitting Top 10 in more than 10 countries across Europe with her second, it seems that lead single ‘Slow It Down’ has already struck a chord in many minds. Mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, the new album incorporates inspiring lyrics with catchy rhythmic cadences that demand a listen, along with her sensual vocals. ‘The Game’ and ‘Pride’ are also phenomenal numbers.
Dirty Bass Far East Movement INTERSCOPE RECORDS Having provided hits such as ‘Rocketeer’ and the raved-about ‘Like A G6’ to dancefloors all over the world, Los Angele’s Far East Movement is brisk enough to savour all the attention as they release their fourth studio album Dirty Bass. Roping in the hip hop and electropop musicians of their era auch as Tyga, Cassie and teeny-bop sensation Justin Bieber, the 14-track album is probably the new soundtrack for most clubs. Lead single ‘Live My Life’ puts a twist on old-school techno pop, with contributing vocals from Bieber, and is most certainly a mosh-worthy one with foot-tapping, hip-gyrating beats.
After Hours Glenn Frey UNIVERSAL MUSIC The founding member of Grammy award-winning rock band Eagles makes a comeback with his first solo studio album in twenty years, with a pristine transformation from the good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll to jazzy blues. The 63-year-old veteran surprises us with tracks after tracks far from ‘Desperado’, while bringing us a peace and sophistication with his earnest vocals. With covers of Brian Wilson’s ‘Caroline, No’ to Randy Newman’s ‘Same Girl’, the former-Eagle tells of his own story with his own progressive harmonics that differs much from the original. While his fanbase might consist of the older crowd, we have to admit that he can still take our breath away.

Cashew Chemists
Genre: Indie Rock Backgrounder: “We were just a bunch of guys, goofing around with the Strokes and Beatles covers before we decided to send in our demo for the Baybeats audition. We didn’t even think we would make it through, but looking at what’s happening to us right now I’d say it was one of the best decisions we ever made.” The oomph: “We’re channelling musical and cultural vibes from a time not too long ago where people were definitely happier. The current youth generation are looking for something real and legitimately cool to enjoy (rather than the generic sounding lousy club pop anthems on the radio today) so I guess we kinda fit into that bill.”
Their message: “We wish that through our music,
people would just stop thinking about how they’re gonna afford that next pair of designer jeans. bag, dress, etc., put their sunnies on, grab their best friends & have a rockin’ good time dancing and soaking in the sweet tunes. We write songs which are soundtracks for the emotions you experience in life - but we still keep a charming disposition while doing so.”
Post-Baybeats: “Realising that Baybeats - despite how
important it is to our development as a band in Singapore - is a stepping stone to a much larger musical journey has made us seriously sit down and think through our plans for the future thoroughly, as a band. Our plans are not yet concrete as of now, but we’re throwing caution to the wind - rockin’ & rollin’ one day at a time.”
Godzilla Genre: Rock/ Pop-punk Backgrounder: “We’re all students at the Australian International School, and started through a school CCA which brought students together for fun jamming sessions. We eventually liked the idea of playing together so we did. Before Baybeats, we were looking for the best opportunities to showcase our band our self-composed music. We auditioned and got into the Noise Singapore showcase, which was a short time before we submitted for Baybeats.” The oomph: “Our energy, smooth-talkin’ with
the ladies and definitely our age. Being so young compared to all the other bands, we can hopefully put something different on the table.”
Their message: “The energy that we can give
through a performance gives the crowed motivation to dance and go crazy. We enjoy what we do and want to make other people feel good with our music.”
Post-Baybeats: “We hope to record an album at the end of the year and use it as a stepping stone to put ourselves on the market.”

A Town In Fear Pep Talk Genre: Alternative Folk
Genre: Hardcore metal Backgrounder: “Our band formed when a few of us from previous bands decided to try something new. So we came together as friends, started to grow closer and write music together. Also, we’ve been into heavy music for a very long time. It appeals to us as we can relate to the passion and energy and we feel that this is how we want to express ourselves.” The oomph: “It’s our energy! Be it a crowd of thousands or just one, you’d still get the same, maybe more energy at each show.”
Their message: “We’re positive in thinking, with our lyrics
Backgrounder: “Before Baybeats, we were like any other bands starting out, jamming covers and stuff, until we got our first big break through Singapore Polytechnic’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition in 2010. Our shot at the competition bagged us a runners-up title, where we performed our first original composition, Mom and Daughter.” The oomph: “The fact that we’re an alternative/ folk outfit intrigues people! We’re loud with a genuine, lyrical take on reality and imagination. It’s also the simplicity in our concept and unique vibe that we deliver through our songs.” Their message: “We want to inspire people through the tales that we convey in our songs.”
based mostly of our life experiences: about family, perseverance, believing in yourself and chasing your dreams. It’s definitely safe to say that the metal/ hardcore genre is a growing genre (despite existing skeptism) as the youths of Singapore today can connect better with the genre and many are looking for alternative avenues of music rather than the Top 40s.”
Post-Baybeats: “Baybeats will be the biggest stage we have ever played and it’ll definitely open up opportunities for us to play for more shows. We’ll keep pushing the boundaries and try to bring our music to as many countries as possible. We are also in the midst of releasing something new, so you don’t want to miss that!”
Post-Baybeats: “We plan to release our next EP and would love to play as many gigs as possible before one of us (Farhan, Haikal or Nazili) has to enlist for National Service. In the long run, we plan to still be around in the local music scene perhaps in the regional and international scene!”
Genre: Post-progressive Backgrounder: “We’d all been working with each other in different bands for a long time before this, but ANECHOIS was born when two of us wrote music that didn’t fit anywhere else. It took a while to put the pieces together and we were only beginning to find our sound when we submitted our demo for the auditions.” The oomph: “We never consciously set out to try and be different. We just let everything evolve naturally, from songwriting to performance, and the result is what sets us apart. And we didn’t choose a genre -- we’ve simply made music that we believe in, and if labelling it helps people understand us better, so be it. For that purpose, we identify ourselves as post-progressive rock, which has its roots in modern alternative and post-rock.”
ANECHOIS 030/RØMP
Their message: “Our songs are written around our own experiences and emotions and we hope that listeners connect to that on a personal level.” Post-Baybeats: “Affirmative plans!”
Black Diamond Folds
Embrace Them Ghosts
Genre: Indie Rock/ Alternative/ Post-Punk Backgrounder: “Formed by a driving passion and love for Indie alternative music. We were in the midst of writing songs, practicing and recording.” The oomph: “The band members in BDF is a unique
combination of experienced musicians (since the 90s) and new musicians in the local music scene, working together as a new formed band. We sound different from the rest of the Singapore bands, hence providing an alternative to local music per se.”
Their message: “The depth of mood in music.” Post-Baybeats: “For now, our plan is to finish recording our debut album and to play more local and international venues, hopefully.”
Genre: Ambient/ Metal/ Hardcore
Obedient Wives Club
Backgrounder: “We express our gratitude and sincerity through our loud yet melodic music and our performance during our sets. We don’t write about sex, drugs nor alcohol. Instead, we write about how it feels to be broken, how we fall and get back up knowing that tomorrow will be a better day, how we lose someone knowing that we’ll see them soon and that everything will be alright no matter what.” The oomph: “First and foremost, we don’t call
our fans ‘fans’. Instead, we regard them as our friends. We also believe that there’s no barrier when we perform between us and our friends which we interact during our sets wholeheartedly, and of course we always wear checkered shirts during our sets.”
Their message: “We always emphasize on loving others as much as you love yourself, and that the broken shall be mended while the scars shall heal in time.” Genre: Indie Pop Backgrounder: “When we auditioned, we were about three months old, and have been gigging about twice a month. Besides Cherie who is in university, the rest of us have jobs ranging from media to engineering.” The oomph: “Our lovely melodies. We reflect the current
Post-Baybeats: “We have been progressively writing and recording new music for the past few months anticipating for Baybeats. We’re currently recording our debut album entitled ‘Hope.Love. Faith’ which will be released during Baybeats itself. We’ll promote our album locally and in overseas post-Baybeats. We’ll not stop writing and creating new music for our friends out there.”

Gaming
tankful oF surprises Heads up online gamers! Benjamin Chia checks out the next big thing to hit the MMO market. World of Tanks took the gaming world by storm when it arrived on the massively multiplayer online (MMO) market as the first and only such title dedicated to armoured warfare. Developed and published by Wargaming.net, the novel concept became wildly successful when it was first released in 2010 in Russia. To date, it has garnered over 24 million players worldwide, and is a living testament to its mass appeal. 2012 has finally seen the game penetrate the Southeast Asian region, with Singapore being the first country to get a taste of the game ahead in the region. World of Tanks is a free-to-play, team-based MMO game that lets players assume the role of tank commanders and pits them against one another on the virtual battlefield. Players can choose from a diverse arsenal of armoured vehicles such as “light tanks, all-purpose medium tanks, giant tanks and long range howitzers” that features in major wars from the 1930s up to the Korean War. All tanks are modeled with historical accuracy right down to the bolt and nut, and boosted by the game’s stunning visuals.
034/RØMP
Unlike many other war-themed titles that feature lengthy storylines and complicated missions for players to accomplish, World of Tanks keeps gameplay entertaining by letting players fight to the death in player-versusplayer sessions that last anything from five to 15 minutes, meaning that you get as much of the high intensity, metal-crunching action that you crave for. Simpletons, don’t be mistaken. You don’t have to be an expert gamer or a hardcore military fan to pick up World of Tanks; all you need is a computer with Internet connection to download the game and begin playing immediately. Currently, people as young as “7 year-olds in primary schools” to “60 year-old military veterans” are joining in on the fun to become the most revered tank commander on the battlefield. World of Tanks has undoubtedly established itself as a well sought-after title in the free-to-play MMO market with upcoming future releases of the aerial combat World of Warplanes as well as the naval-themed World of Battleships scheduled for next year. We even hear that a game that combines all three elements of land, sea and air combat is on the cards. Now that is more reason to start immersing yourself in the World of Tanks. Players can download the free to play MMO game at www.worldoftanks-sea.com and stay updated on the latest news.

Skincare After carefully scrutinising and testing ten facial spas across town, Denise Ooi picks out her top three favourites.
Face-off: Femme Why We Love It It’s all about the ambience! Located in a shophouse tucked away in a less busy part of town, this boutique spa impressed once we stepped in. The romantic interior decor will make any girl feel like a princess going for a pampering treat. The facial treatment at My Cozy Room Boutique Spa was a unique experience. In addition to the usual thorough pore cleansing, face steaming and blackheads extraction, the therapists used a facial mask tool made with genuine jade to place over the face. Using jade is an age-old remedy for health problems. It is believed that jade facial tools can calm the nervous system as well as improve skin radiance and elasticity. The therapists then applied an aromatic nourishing ginseng mask before ending with a superbly uplifting head and shoulder massage. My Cozy Room Boutique Spa

Why We Love It Over at Wheelock Place, Jurlique Day Spa sits on the upper floors of this evolving retail mall. The most alluring about this lovely spa was the products they used. This is because their products are manufactured in their own 153 acre farm down under in Adelaide. Since we are familiar that essential oils can improve one’s emotional well being, these oils used by Jurlique drove away our stress almost instantaneously. The therapists customized our facials according to our skin needs which was assuring for some of us with problematic skin types. Also used in our facial was the Jurlique Rose oil. This product was from their luxurious collection and it supposedly encourages blood circulation which restores the skin to a natural pink healthy glow. Something worth trying! Jurlique Day Spa

Why we Love It Kelyn Esther specializes in their own range of skincare products using dead sea minerals from Israel as its main ingredient. Dead sea minerals are well known for their powerful healing properties and has been endorsed for centuries. One of the first famous endorsements came from Cleopatra, pharaoh of ancient Egypt, who was well aware that this nutrient-rich mineral could help her stay young and beautiful. The facial ritual at this spa included deep pore cleansing with their medicinal natural black mud which remove impurities, sebum and toxins. The treatment continued with the routine exfoliative dermbrasion and blackhead extraction. After this, the therapist ended the facial with a thick creamy mask made of with the goodness of the dead sea. Our skin was left feeling moisturized and rejuvenated! Kelyn Esther

Skin problems, vamoose! It’s time to put the old wives’ tale that facials cause breakouts to rest. In fact, Niks Shop Salon’s wondrous “safe” facials can help get rid of those disastrous red bumps! People of all skin types are catered to here, with the Acne & Comedone Treatment Facial being a standout for youth with troubled and oily skin. It just takes 90 minutes, and you’ll be rid of blackheads fear not! There won’t be any painful extractions, as Niks’ meticulous beauticians are careful not to aggravate your skin by force-extracting angry-looking zits.
Face It!
The everyday common male definitely participates in practices of vanity – be it applying that SPF 50 moisturiser, slapping heavy on the BB Cream, and some even facials. Let’s face it. Facials are fantastic. Right from the get-go, you have someone to wash your face for you (and wrestle in some well-executed fingertip massages), extract heinous looking things from your poor exhausted pores, and the nose-flaring aromatic mask they leave on to close your pores. You’ll be walking out of the beautician’s office feeling (and looking) like a million bucks. Join Joseph Murray as he experiments!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
HAPPINESS ISN’T THAT DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE Cue in a Monday morning and hair that refuses to stay in place, and you will darken the clouds for the rest of the week. You muse, “What a bad week this is going to be,” as you heave a heavy sigh. The truth is no matter what happens, you’ll always manage to find some way to find a small nick that manages to bring your day down. Perhaps it’s not a big scratch but it is often easier to just give in and accept that your day will bed bad. And then we get annoyed and wonder just what does it take to be happy. Happiness is hard to define but most people are not aware of whether they are happy or not. Some people feel an instant perk to their mood, some people find it instinctual to smile at strangers. Many people believe that happiness is a form of luck, and that some people are destined to enjoy a peace of mind while others are chained to resentment. You’ll be surprised to find that happiness isn’t winning the big lucky draw or owning a new sports mobile. There are little things that can be incorporated into your everyday life. These tips, though often small, can and will take you one step closer to finding satisfaction in your day. Try some of the below and you might just find yourself chirpier!
Set a plan for the day. Don’t get us wrong, we do not mean to set a resolution for you. Resolutions have a unique way of getting us down
046/RØMP 046/RØMP
In Pursuit of
Happiness indefinitely, but we are talking about setting a goal. It can be marking down on places to hit before you end your day. Whatever it is, make a plan to attain goals that you believe will make you happy. Your mood will very likely increase as your pursue your goal, because you will feel better about yourself for going after something you value. It may even be as simple as popping by the bakery for a cupcake on your way home. The satisfaction that you get from ticking off the check boxes of your goals for the day is incomparable. Even if it does not make you smile immediately, the satisfaction will ease you.
Be selfish. Most of us have more than ourselves in our mind. In school, you wonder if you’d see your group mates in class; at work, you listen with a cup of coffee at your neighbour’s desk about how his renovation is burning his bank account. Well, you need to be selfish and give yourself more time. It’s important to take some time each day to do something nice for yourself and to put yourself before anyone else. Treat yourself to lunch, or say ‘no’ to the additional work your boss is giving you. Take an extra fifteen minutes for that long, relaxing bath and unconsciously, you’ll find yourself in a much better mood.
Surround yourself with happy people. It’s true that they say that you cannot choose your family, but you have a say when it comes to choosing your
friends. Surround yourself with people who have a positive outlook. It’s easy to be dragged down by people who think negatively. Conversely, if you are around people who are happy, such a disposition is easily infectious.
Scrap that diet. Yes, Miranda Kerr looks like a bombshell. And how on earth did she manage to walk in her skimpies for the Victoria Secrets Fashion Show two months after having her baby? Whatever it is, that diet is not going to get you modelling your underwear, so choose the cupcake over the wholemeal biscuit. Of course, we are not telling you to overeat but having the occasional indulgence will help you celebrate the little things. That being said, being overweight or not eating nutritious foods can have a negative effect on your mood. So it’s important to take of note of what you put into your sandwich but that does not mean you cannot have a little chocolate on the side.
You deserve it. Lastly, it is important to understand that you deserve happiness. Those who believe that they are not worthy of contentment may subconsciously sabotage their own efforts to achieve it. If necessary, tell yourself each day that you deserve to be happy, and remind yourself what steps you will take to achieve the happiness you desire. It’s only then that you will achieve true joy.

Rendang (Spice level: 4/5) Despite topping the CNN’s ‘World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods’ list, Rendang might not yield much promise with its bleh ordinary appearance (i.e., chunks of meat in a thick gravy) but if you head down to Geylang Serai and find yourself flaring your nostrils at the delicious smell in the air, this is the culprit. The ingredients, (shallots, chilli peppers, lemon grass, turmeric, coconut, and galangal and meat), are simmered for up to four hours to ensure the meat soaks up the goodness of the spices, and the result? Tender chunks of beef (or chicken, goat, or lamb!) that are just unforgettably oh-so-yummy.

Chicken Curry Noodles (Spice level: 3/5) Ever sat down with your grandma’s chicken curry with a bowl of rice and wished the dining experience could be less messy and fuss-free? Someone had that very same thought and came up with Chicken Curry Noodles – a bowl of mouthwatering chicken curry you can call your own, served with egg noodles. Who said you couldn’t have your curry and drink it too?
Laksa (Spiciness: 4.5/5, 5/5 if you add in that extra spoon of sambal!) Fresh shrimp, cockles, fish sticks and bean curd puffs, served in a piping hot coconut-based curry, garnished with a spoonful of ground Vietnamese coriander (and optional sambal chilli paste), would be a tradition that carried on till today? Its uniqueness aside, the dish has an unparalleled richness and taste to boot – something that has definitely charmed the palettes of generations of Singaporeans and visitors alike.

Milo Mischief Rachel Ooi recommends a quick, easy recipe for a no-frills milo cake.
For the cheeky types whose chocolate cravings get the better of you, stealing spoonfuls of milo powder as a kid when no one was looking was but the norm. Of course, that’s way back when, and the refined young person you are has resolved to never resorting to such desperate measures... Or have you? But fear thee not, your secret is safe with me. And here, I present to you how to whip up a milo brownie in 45 minutes for that cocoa fix. Trust me, this method this completely idiot proof.
Steps:
1. Preheat your oven to 170 degree celsius. In the bowl,
add a little hot water to the milo powder and stir, making a chocolatey consistency. Add butter and place bowl over a saucepan which has enough water to cover its base. (Take note that the bowl and water in the saucepan should not touch, as the contact will cause a burn.)
2. In a large mixing bowl, stir your eggs, sugar and
vanilla extract with a wooden spoon. When the chocolate and butter have melted gradually with a smooth and silky texture, it’s ready to be added into the bowl. Stir thoroughly and add flour, bit by bit. Your batter will be ready when everything’s fully incorporated.
3. Transfer the batter into a 6-by-6 inch square baking pan and leave it in the oven for about 20 minutes.
052/RØMP
WHAT YOU NEED: Utensils:
• Large mixing bowl • Wooden spoon • Sauce Pan • Medium heatproof bowl • 6 x 6 square pan
Ingredients:
• 200g milo powder • 185g salted butter • 1 cup white/ brown caster sugar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 3 large eggs • 1 cup flour
Tips: - Brown sugar enhances the flavour of the brownie as it adds a tinge of spice - You can manufacture your own powdered sugar from caster sugar by placing half a cup of the latter in a food processor. It takes about five seconds to grind half a cup. - Turn this recipe into a Mocha brownie by adding 5 tbs of coffee powder or 3 tsp of coffee emulco
4. If desired, sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top when it’s cool. Alternatively, before placing your batter in the oven, you may want to add M&Ms, chocolate chips or rainbow sprinkles for an added flavour. BONUS! Should you have some Nutella spread lying around in the refrigerator, I highly urge you to put it to good use! First, leave your baked goody in the fridge for 15 minutes. Take it out when slightly hardened and, using a sharp kitchen knife, slice the middle of your cake to sandwich a decadent layer of Hazelnut goodness.

Top 10
backpacking essentials
cour through the internet for a backpacking checklist and you will most probably be stumped by the extensive amount of suggestions that varies greatly. Much has been written and though undeniably some do offer sound advice, all the fear of mongering circulating the web has not make things any easier. With all the “Oh you must take this!” and “That is a must!” going around, we tend to overpack, and overspend; which is precisely what the retailers want as most packing lists are aimed at the mid-range travellers. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all packing list, as the climate and style of travel are undoubtedly the biggest factors to consider. Do note that this list is geared towards independent travellers with the focus on practicality, budget and weight, and unless where mentioned, within a moderate or tropical climate. Everything is essential, though some things are more than the others. Below is a list of the top 10 things a minimalist/ budget backpacker should have that does not drive you into the red.
1. Backpack A lot of novice travellers buy backpacks with a capacity of up to 60L or even 70L which is considered an overkill, as a fully loaded 60L backpack can weigh up to 20kg! Many experienced backpackers go on year-long round-the-way trips with only a 40L sack. With a Outgear Peak 40L backpack, you can save time and money by not having to check in overweight luggages as it is considered a carry on bag. Also, with a limited capacity, you’re forced to consider what you can bring along and curb the urge to spend on unnecessary souvenirs you might get along the way. Lastly, for a quality backpack that cost so little, it really is value for money. Outgear Peak 40L, Mustafa Centre, $56 Mustafa Centre, 145 Syed Alwi Road, Singapore - 207704, +65 6295 5855
3. Packable Daypack Imagine hiking the Great Wall of China with your 40L backpack that weighs 10kg for the entire day. Pretty unimaginable, eh? The Eagle Creek packable daypack weighs just 170g and can be packed down to a size of a lunch box. When opened, it has a capacity of 11L which is big enough to hold a DSLR camera, a jacket, a day worth of food and drinks and still with room to spare! 4. Pocket Towel
2. Silk sleep sheet linen
Ebay.com.sg, S$ 19.31 not including postage.
Most people have never heard of a sleep sheet until their first backpacking trip where majority of the budget travellers discover the horrors of sleeping in a bug-infested $5-a-night hostel bed. Though not life-threatening, the bed bugs can pack a punch with their bites, causing skin rashes. A silk sleep sheet is a very thin, light and compact linen that can be sewn together to form a cocoon which effectively replace the sleeping bag. It can prevent bites from bed bugs unlike cotton, and it can keep your body temperature regulated so that your body stays cool in summer and warm in winter as it has a very good heating property. Almost all hostels provide extra blankets upon request during winter, so just a silk sleep sheet will suffice. It also packs down to almost nothing as it is very light, compared to the bulky and heavy sleeping bag.making it pointless to lug around a sleeping bag.
Conventional towels are bulky and take up space, and are usually very heavy when wet. They take a long time to dry and tend to stink after a few use. Although comfortable, it is an utter nightmare for backpackers with limited time to wash and let dry completely. The Sea to Summit pocket towel is the ideal solution as it consist of 70% polyester, 30% nylon micro fiber for superior absorption which allows it to dry overnight. Weighing just 42g with a dimension of 40 x 80 cm, it only takes up a rough 7 x 7 cm of storage space when packed down. Sea to Summit pocket towel, The Planet Traveller, $22.90 2 Orchard Turn #04-19 ION Orchard S238801, +65 6509 8330

5. Dry bag
Ebay.sg, Prices vary according to sizes.
Karana Ocean Dry Pack is a must-have multi purpose bag that is highly versatile. It is very light despite its durable strength and can be used for different purposes. With its waterproof properties, it is mainly used as a beach dry bag to keep the valuables safe. However, it can also serve as a interior linen for your backpack to keep the contents dry. Likewise, a smaller 10L dry pack can be used to store your electronics and valuables inside your day pack during a downpour when you are out for a day trip.
6. Small padlocks with 2 keys Almost all hostels provide a locker with a padlock for you to keep your backpack secured while you are out exploring the city but some may have dodgy locks or even no locks at all. For some places, you might even be able to padlock the dorm door (if you are the only occupant) and the window for extra security! Night travels will be the predominant way of transport for a budget traveller because a night spent on a sleeper train or bus will reduce the expenses spent on accommodation. This is where a torchlight will come in handy when you are looking for your stuff in the dark cabin. Also, switching on the lights in the middle of the night just to unlock your lock’s combination will not make you the most popular guy around.
9. Ear Plugs
10. Fishing lines + Sewing Kit
Hostels are always conspicuously located above bars or along a busy junction, eagerly playing with your sensory systems after an 18-hour bus ride. Hostels also seem to be able to constantly produce a winning snorer in every dorm on almost a daily basis. Trust me, you will learn to love your ear plugs. A regular sewing thread will rot and break, whereas fishing lines do not. A light weight fishing line (five pound test) is very durable and strong but yet still thin enough to be threaded through a needle to sew up and damages on your backpack. The last thing you would want to happen is to have your backpack break apart in the middle of nowhere with no way of getting a new replacement bag.

C
hengdu, the economic powerhouse of Western China, is often overlooked by international travellers with eyes unsurprisingly set on the usual Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. Not as glitzy and glamorous (though not entirely lacking in that department) as compared to her counterparts, Chengdu makes up for it in her own way.
058/RØMP
Considered as one of the top livable mega-city in China, Chengdu doesn’t chase wealth like what the rest of China is doing. As baffling as it may be, it makes you wonder how a city of 14 million people managed to develop into what she is now but yet manage to not only hold on, but even embrace the traditional way of living. You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re in Europe if not because of the architectural design nuances. Billed as the most relaxing city in the country; a “lazy land” if I may, Chengdu is rich in history and diverse in culture, probably because moving forward is considered way too much of a chore. Lined with tea houses, the streets are often filled with the rattling sounds of mahjong tiles with the occasional loud slurping sounds of enjoyment derived from their tea. It might even be considered as a national sport to spend 5 hours a day sitting by your favourite spot doing nothing except people-watch. The first thing you must do when you set foot into Chengdu is to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Recognized as the most successful panda-breeding centre in the world; and also widely considered as an important pitstop for any visiting foreign political leader, it has managed to emulate the perfect environment to breed the endangered giant pandas, starting from a population of six pandas to an astounding pack of 83 thus far! Being the capital of Sichuan, you will have to at some point of time come vis-à-vis with the much revered, world renowned Sichuan ‘ma la’ hot pot! Literally named ‘ma’ for numb, and ‘la’ for spicy, the local delicacy will no doubt leave you feeling for your tongue to make sure it is still in place! Common ingredients are beef, chilli powder, chilli pepper, and the sichuan pepper that is responsible for the numbing sensation. Definitely not for the faint-hearted!
Standing at around 3000 meters, Mount Emei, which literally means “Delicate Eyebrow Mountain”, is a sacred Buddhist mountain two hours south of Chengdu by train. You can easily complete the ascend within a single day by taking shuttle buses and cable cars, but to actually absorb the sights and sounds, you will have to allocate at least 5 days to trek up and down the mountain, with the option of staying at one of the many monasteries to be found along the trail up to the submit. For most part of the climb, you will most probably be the only few tourist to be ascending by foot, allowing you to engage with your inner self, and yet admire the surrounding that was once a Buddhist cultural centre with up to a 150 temples at its peak. About an hour away by bus stands, or maybe more aptly, sit the Giant Buddha of Leshan. Carved out of a cliff facing Mount Emei, it is the world’s largest carved stone Buddha created in the year 713 by a monk to calm the rough river flowing beneath its feet. With Tibet in its backyard, Chengdu is widely considered as the last frontier to the wild wild west. Not to be confused with the Tibet Autonomous Region that requires a special permit, the ‘Greater Tibet’ stretching from Qinghai, Gansu to Sichuan and Yunnan offers the opportunity to experience the Tibetan culture without having the same kind of restrictions. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jiuzhaigou Valley is a must-see when you are in Sichuan. Also called ‘Heaven on Earth’, it does live up to its reputation, if not exceeding every single bit of it. Located at an altitude ranging from 2000 meters to 4000 meters, it is famous for its colored lakes, multi-level waterfalls and snow-capped mountains, making it one of the most spectacular sceneries around. All in all, there is nowhere else in China that can replicate the unique vibe that only Chengdu has. The slow pace of life, the friendly people, a developed city without the hustle and bustle of a big city and the close proximity to nature really set Chengdu apart from the rest of China.

What It Means To Be
Singaporean
Text by Shah Nair Photo by PA Lim
S
eeing as to this issue’s theme of ‘everything Singapore’, let’s open up this discourse-citing quote from Dr Chee Soon Juan, who spoke at the Singapore Political Forum at the National University of Singapore on 23 Mar 2011. You know, because politics involves chair-throwing in other countries and we are thankful none of that has happened just yet. Or we could be brutal and pounce on the statistics that interview yielded; a survey done by Singapore Polytechnic students on people between the ages of 15-29 indicated that 50% would leave the country if they had a chance and a “full 37% felt no loyalty to this country”. That was how I reacted to Aaron Tan and his eloquence on the World Wide Web. It was alarming. I’m pretty sure STOMP would be pleased to get a mention here as well, if that charismatic aforementioned lad got one. The days of National Servicemen returning home from Pulau Tekong grabbing the tabloids by the skinnies of their spines, only to sigh in relief because their maids weren’t caught carrying their fieldpacks on VGA cameras. You see, people keep saying the younger generation are so spoilt. But what they fail to realise is, laziness is the mother of all inventions.
060/RØMP
What’s more annoying to this vigilant citizen is having a third language being encouraged to the young ones. Tough as it is mastering the English language and whatever we choose to speak at home, I hardly think offering languages like Spanish, French or German is necessary if you can’t earn distinctions at the main two. The only way I see it useful is if brands like H&M having opened in Singapore six whole years after their first Asian store in Dubai, explanations could have been handed out to tourists like brochures along Somerset better on the opening day. On to more pressing issues would be the whining of the average Singaporean, “goddamn foreign talent” they say. I say, if we were to spend our time chalking up moves ahead of the next PRC/ expat landing on our shore, we would be chuckling away like me (tapping on my keys knowing no foreign talent/ talon can write this article better than me). A little optimism if you please, even if Mr Eduardo Saverin now resides on our (reclaimed) shores. Don’t think we forgot about you older folks there, if it’s not COE you’re worried about, it’s what the CEO of your company is drawing and how much you deserve a raise.

AM I ADHD? I’m a 17-year-old student who just finished his first year in polytechnic. However, I just managed to scrape through my modules and obtain borderline passes. I don’t know if I’m just being lazy, or as what my friends tease me, ADHD-stricken. I can’t seem to concentrate on doing my work and my projects are often half-completed or almost completed at the deadline of my submission. Something in me is unwilling to focus on anything for long periods of time. It gets worse during this stage in life as I didn’t experience this as much when I was young. My family members dismissed me when I brought the problem up and is unwilling to pay for my consultant fees. What should I do?
Mr Aloysius Chow gives us advice on the most pressing issues at present.

Organisation Having problems at school with friends and poor results can leave some people feeling distraught. According to your letter, it seems like you might be having some difficulties with time management. There are several components of good time management and one is to be able to focus and concentrate appropriately on the task at hand. The reason is simple, if you can focus on what you have to, you will complete it faster. Here are some tips on improving your concentration levels: 062/RØMP
Your work surroundings
Ensure the place where you do your work is comfortable, though not too comfortable that you will fall asleep. It should not be too uncomfortable either, or you might avoid being there at all. Optimise your desk!
What you eat and drink
Having a good breakfast will set your energy levels high for a productive start to the day. For snacks during the day, consider healthy power boosters like fresh fruits and almonds. Also, hydrate yourself regularly. If your body starts to dehydrate, you will feel lethargic and this will affect your concentration level.
We are flooded with so many things to do at the same time on the computer and handphone. Some of these activities divide time and concentration for more important things. Try putting your handphone away and not to log into Facebook while doing your work. A reprieve is that your brain cannot focus continuously for too long. So you can take a 15 minute break after every hour for not-sodemanding activities. Should you insist on checking if you have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and have a smaller budget, visit any one of the local polyclinics. They do have the expertise to help you.

Can colleagues be friends? When I met Benson* on the first day of work, we instantly connected because we came from similar backgrounds and are both soccer fanatics. However, as time goes by, I realised that he is a slob at work and I’m quite the perfectionist. During the first few instances when I discovered that he’s sloppy at work, I managed to put it across nicely about it. But subsequently, I was very close to blowing my top. We’re bros and all, but I don’t want our friendship to affect the quality of work we produce as a team. How should I handle this?
Problems related to sexual issues can be tiring to manage, especially if you feel alone handling it. Truthfulness and integrity in deliberating what is best for you relationship is very important. If sexual gratification is the priority, perhaps this relationship is not the right one for you now. You might want to consider a break from this relationship if your needs do not match his. Be honest and fair to yourself and to your boyfriend. With either decision, I am sure that you will learn more about yourself and bring it into your current or next relationship.
3
In love but not making any. I’ve a significant other who’s very religious and doesn’t believe in fornicating. However, I’m a girl who cannot suppress my urges and I’m beginning to lust over other guys because mine refuses to meet my needs. What should I do?
Friendships can make work bearable yet it can cause tension in the office. It seems that there is a difference in your work style with how Benson’s. This is normal. Different people have different ways of doing things, hence contrasting work styles will occur in any office. Try to accept Benson’s work style, especially if he manages to produce the quality of work that is expected of him. If you still feel irritated, have a frank and open talk with Benson to explain how you feel. Be honest and straightforward. Perhaps Benson does not realise that he is not doing his fair share of the work. It is always beneficial to sort out differences calmly.
