DEAR FRIENDS, The number eight is often associated with new beginnings, and as we have embarked on our eighth year in operation, this certainly held true for us. This year we watched all of our first class of RCA students graduate from high school and begin college in schools across the country. We completed our capital campaign and started construction on our wondrous new educator training facility that will be unveiled on January 14th, enabling us to expand our reach even farther. And we have now trained over 27,000 educators from around the world-- today there are over 1 million children sitting in classrooms led by a teacher who has observed our teaching methods. As we continue to blaze new trails, we also want to take time to reflect upon our founding principles, for these will remain a core piece of who we are, even as we seek to grow and change. As we reflect on our success, we are so very grateful for our supporters who have made it all possible. The magic of the Ron Clark Academy is attributed to our phenomenal staff, our dedicated parents, our brilliant students, and the countless individuals who selflessly give their time, talents, resources, and love to our school. Thank you for helping us create a revolution in education!
Together we are changing lives. Thank you for joining us! With great appreciation,
RON CLARK & KIM BEARDEN Cofounders of the Ron Clark Academy

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Thank you and congratulations to each donor and friend of RCA from the entire Board of Trustees. RCA is enjoying further growth and new expansion thanks to your efforts and support. This year was focused on turning visions into reality, and this happened because of each of you - the individual donors, founders, teachers, staff, parents and volunteers. An expanded teacher training facility has been a dream and vision for over six years. Many people made a significant impact as they poured their hearts and souls into the efforts of design, construction, execution, and fundraising to work with Ron and Kim on their vision. We are now very proud to be able to state that the new teacher training facility is completed, open and an absolutely amazing place. As Lewis Carroll stated,
“One of the secrets of life is all that is really worth the doing is what we do for others.”
8
The capital campaign committee and the Board raised nearly $5 million dollars in a just over a year’s time. The construction team, comprised of Collins Cooper Carusi Architects, J.E. Dunn Construction, and project manager volunteers from Selig Enterprises (Bonnie Dean and Adam McDowell), all worked diligently to deliver a magical place on time and on budget. So many people helped make that possible with cash donations, in-kind donations, time and hard work. It is impressive to see how quickly and how well the community came together and produced an amazing and magical new addition to RCA. This new building allows RCA to double the number of teachers they can train as RCA continues their revolution in education and becomes even more sustainable going forward. The school and the Board listened intently to donor’s feedback throughout the initial growth of the school and during this recent major capital campaign. We have finished
many items of governance to help the school continue to mature as a non-profit and successfully exceed donor expectations. The Board and the school put contracts in place for all teachers at the school including the founders, passed strong financial policies, discussed and reviewed a succession plan, implemented a board reserve that is strong and growing, and recently passed an updated strategic plan that incorporates short and long term goals for RCA and its Board. The school consistently produces magic and now the additional governance infrastructure will ensure we keep producing magic for kids here and all around the world for a long time to come. It’s a great time in the growth and sustainability of the school and the Board thanks each of you for working for and supporting the sxchool. Thank you for all you do. Sincerely,

A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE A Lifetime in Four Years The Ron Clark Academy is a polar opposite from any other type of education I have had. Anyone can teach a child something, but this school does not just teach students. Instead, the Ron Clark Academy INVOLVES students. I have never in my life come in contact with any group of individuals who are as kind, giving, and imaginative as the staff at my school. Their amazing gift for helping students and adults alike inspires me to change peoples’ lives for the better. Before I came to the Academy, I was a quiet student. If there was one thing that RCA helped me with, it was expressing myself. When I was in the 6th grade, I became a part of the “Ya Heard” poetry team and learned how much power words have hidden within them.
Another thing that made my experience meaningful was that the staff genuinely cares about the students. One year ago, my father was diagnosed with kidney disease; as scared as I was, my teachers helped me in my time of fear and uncertainty. They would ask me about my dad and pray for him, and I can name very few who would do that for me. I can also remember my latest trip with my teachers where we went to go camping. As we all sat around the blazing fire, I had a sudden realization: I had never been camping before! Who can say that your own teachers took you on a trip out of school? The staff of RCA has always been there for me through both good and bad days. Now, thanks to them, my future is brighter than it ever has been.
“ If there was one thing that RCA helped me with, it was expressing myself.” by Jacobi Copeland 8th Grade Student

This Day is Magical Students often ask, “How will our education be used in real life?” Well this day provides a thorough answer to that question. The Best Day of School is one of my favorite memories at RCA. – Zyan Wynn 8th Grader

BEST DAY OF SCHOOL... EVER! Each year, one of the most anticipated events at RCA is the “Best Day of School... Ever.” The students are never aware what day it will be, and they are completely suprised upon their arrival. The purpose of the Best Day of School... Ever is to expose students to the wealth of educational opportunities in Atlanta and to connect our academic content to real-world experiences. Our students look forward to it every year because the whole city is their classroom and reinforces the idea that learning can take place anywhere. We hope they will take this concept with them for their rest of their lives.
This year, buses for each grade were taken to locations in Atlanta where teachers had set up “classrooms” where they would teach for one hour. At the end of the hour, the students were taken to their next class at a different location in the city. Classes included having a history lesson in the Center for Civil and Human Rights, learning to build race cars and compute velocity at Legoland, dissecting the science behind the formula at the World of Coke, and exploring the math behind the sport at the College Football Hall of Fame. It was an entire day of extremely engaging and exciting lessons! 13
OUR VISION To be the best school in the world by demonstrating transformative methods and techniques that are embraced and replicated everywhere.

A TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE When entering Joyce Estrada Bailey’s classroom, you are immediately captivated by her charisma, warm smile, and energetic spirit. Her passion is evident, and it is obvious that this master educator was born to teach. You will find that her students are always actively engaged in handson activities, kinesthetic games, and song—all to learn how to read, write, and speak Spanish. It is no wonder that our students scurry to her classroom each day with joy and wonder in anticipation of what each lesson will unfold. Ms. Estrada Bailey knew at a young age that teaching would be her calling—her first student was her own mother. Her family is from Honduras, and Spanish was the primary language spoken at home. As a child, Ms. Joyce Estrada Bailey’s mother bought her a small chalkboard, and each day, she would use it to teach her mother basic English skills. It was through those lessons for her mother that she realized her passion and calling to teach. Although Spanish was her primary spoken language, Joyce Estrada Bailey was illiterate in the language as a child. It wasn’t until she grew older that she learned how to read and write it at her father’s urging. He told her “One day you will thank me for this.” When she received her position as Spanish teacher at RCA, she shared that her first call was to her father to thank him for urging her to continue her study of the language. In addition to developing our students’ Spanish skills, Estrada Bailey nurtures an appreciation for difference cultures in her classroom. She emphasizes the importance of understanding and
recognizing inaccurate stereotypes about Spanish speakers. Estrada Bailey shares that “There are twenty-one Spanish speaking countries in this world, and each country has its own unique words, dialect, and culture. Individuals within each country are unique as well, so we should never make assumptions about certain groups of people.” She also has a passion for unlocking students’ understanding of the world beyond the four walls of the classroom. She demonstrates that depth of knowledge is increased when students see how things are relevant and connected. As a result, Estrada Bailey shares this information with our visiting educators as well. She cultivates an understanding of how all of the subjects are integrated and interconnected when she teaches her interactive workshop entitled “Connecting the DOTS,” where she emphasizes connecting opportunities for teacher success. Joyce Estrada Bailey received her undergraduate degree from Georgia Southern University and is currently working on her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Jones International University. She has taught eighth grade language arts and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses in addition to Spanish. She has a proven track record of increasing student performance in writing and reading. She holds levels 1, 2, and 3 of IB Certification. She also goes above and beyond by serving as a sponsor for the award-winning Model United Nations Team and volunteering for numerous committees that support the magic of RCA. We are so fortunate to have such a gifted educator in our midst!
