EDUCATION 2020
Architecture is the space that combines cultures into realities. It is not only the place for living and socializing but a place to dwell. Architecture is the shelter both conceptually and perceptually. It is the space that people can recognize the preexistence and define life. Architecture is the central outcome of human civilization. We design architecture to solve the real problem in the world and to help people better experience their lives.

Great Spectacle Theatre Project FALL 2019 SENIOR STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: ABIGAIL HOOVER, BEN PERRONE

SITE This project is located at Roosevelt Row, downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Roosevelt Row as one of the most populous artistic districts in the nation has attracted hundreds of artists coming to Phoenix for decades. PROBLEM Theatre has become obsolete that the young generation would not like to come for shows. Roosevelt Row has become boring that people are not interested in the artistic event. SOLUTION A new form of theatre is designed to become a public space for people to interact with. The theatre encourages people to interact with their neighbors and helps people to connect with the community. CONNECTION A dynamic connection between stage and seating helps the performer and the audience to have an immersive experience in the same space. An interactive connection between performer and audience encourages everyone not only to watch a show but to participate in the show, and it also reveals the essence of a theatre as a public space in an urban context to bring the neighbors together. A natural connection between indoor and outdoor spaces stimulates the interactions among the communities, and the interacting life story emit different sparks here in the theatre.

SITE This project is located in Mesa, Arizona. The site is close to downtown Mesa and there will be an ASU campus for School of Film on the south side. PROBLEM People will most likely lose their connection with their neighbors and their community. The architecture itself doesn’t encourage neighbors to interact. SOLUTION A new system of dwelling units enhances the living experience for the residents to rejoice the presence of their neighbors by having three types of spaces combined in the multi-family housing project. THREE SPACES Shared public spaces in the complex with different functions for the unique experience encourage the residents to come to the public space with their families and neighbors. Shared private spaces, located on the second floor, surround the main circulation in the center and give residents an opportunity to interact with their neighbors based on their own preferences. Indoor private spaces protect the residents’ privacy and lifestyles and have a big living area to invite their neighbors to come for interaction.

SITE This project is located at Roosevelt Row, downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Roosevelt Row as one of the most populous artistic districts in the nation has attracted hundreds of artists coming to Phoenix for decades. PROBLEM The client wants to have some characters from James Turrell’s artworks into this housing project. Representing the client’s intention of preserving the historical area on the Roosevelt St., this house was intended to be the landmark in this area. SOLUTION Based on the preference for the art of James Turrel, an American artist who focused on the light and space to emphasize his artworks, this project keeps some characteristics of his masterpieces and makes them combine with local history by architectural elements through the design process to create a two-story modern house. To follow the client’s will, this project is a compact and integral part of the urban fabric. Furthermore, this project stands in history as an irreplaceable element on Roosevelt St.

Walk With Water Nature Center Project SPRING 2018 SOPHOMORE STUDIO - HANDDRAWING DOCUMENT INSTRUCTOR: CATHERINE SPELLMAN
25
SITE This project is located between Central Ave. and 7 Ave. along with the Rio Salado River in Phoenix. The Rio Salado Audubon Center for wild animals, especially for birds, is close to the site. The site is on the slope and the riverbed is covered by trees. PROBLEM With the development of modern society, the natural environment has been polluting by many aspects. A lot of species of animals are dying out. Focusing on profit and development, humans forget other living beings in this world and how the earth should be like ecologically. SOLUTION Connecting to Rio Salado Audubon Center, a nature center on the hillside along with the river is an educational institution, that brings people back to nature and reveals the essence of protecting the environment. The project is lightly touching the earth and avoids removing any existing trees on the site. An additional stream is designed from an upper-hill reservoir flowing down to the riverbed to cool down the nature center during the summer and also to bring to natural elements across the building The circulation of the entire project goes with the topography and the way water flows down to the hill. The project itself intends to let people experience how humans should protect nature, respect nature, and live in nature.

Isolated On Water Shelter Project FALL 2017 SOPHOMORE STUDIO - DESIGN EXCELLENCE INSTRUCTOR: WARREN SCOTT MURFF
33
SITE This project is located at the Papago Park in Tempe, Arizona. The site is at a basin, that is collecting water during the raining season and becomes a small lake seasonally every year. PROBLEM In the desert, people are looking for a shelter to go through some particular periods of their lives, such as summer or the low of life. Is there a place takes people away from the city and the crowd? Is there a place used for retreat and contemplation? SOLUTION The project is a shelter in the desert and it intends to use the experience of isolation to give people a sense of stillness. The project itself is located on the hillside of the basin, which is isolated from the urban fabric. Isolation can be used to emphasize the feeling of living and also be used to enhance the experience of space. By shifting the orientation of each volume with a certain function, each space is isolated from one another and it would give people a strong feeling of entering a new space. The living area and working area are isolated as well by a floating deck bridge, to set up a unique experience of working on the water.
