Back To The Roosevelt First Award on Arizona Resident Archiect Student Competition Phoenix, AZ Summer, 2018 This project is designed for a single family to represent the Client’s intention of preserving the historical area on the Roosevelt St. Based on the preference on the art of James Turrell, an American artist who focused on the light and space to emphasize his art, this project keeps some characteristics of his art work and makes them combine with local history by architectural elements through the design process to create a two-story modern house. The design starts at the way people will use it on its floor plan, and the exterior outline and structure of the proejct come from shifting boxes. To follow client’s will, this project is urban, compact, and an integral part of the urban fabric. Furthermore, this project stands in the history as a irreplaceable element on the Roosevelt St.

James Turrell Narrative The client is inspired by James Turrell’s art and enjoys collecting his art work. Therefore, this project chooses some elements in James Turrell’s art, and makes them become one of the whole project to make this single family house more spatial. As people getting around in the house, they will experience different space with different light effects. 6

Sustainability Narrative Looking back to the history, this city and this Roosevelt historical district have been through a lot. As a designer of this projct, this project would keep the consistency of tradition in this local house, such as local plants, material, and sturcture. However, at the same time, the project would combine both historical culture and modern element to become a special residential architecture standing in the history. 7

Isolated on The Water Design Excellence at Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts Tempe, AZ Fall, 2017 This Project is designed for a shelter in desert and the site is at Papago Park, Tempe, Arizona. Project is located at a basin, and water will flow and be collected into the bottom of the basin during a certan season every year. The Project separates living and working spaces as two isolated spaces connected by a bridge. In order to emphaize the experience, the studio, as a working space, is projecting out into the basin to capture a great view above the water and windows are tinted to a dark color to prevent too much light in the room. The project comes from shifting some boxes and push one out to make the experience more spatial. 8

Concrete Project Spring, 2018

In this project, we focused on the organizational system in design process. From a lager scale to a small scale, everything in this world is well-organized. We started on a case study on one of the Usonain style house projcts by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Organic Architecture deisgned by Wright has it own organizational system, which is the grid on the floor, to square everything in this deisgn project. The grid helped archiect to create spaces and to experience the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Not only in a deisgn project, the organizational system could be also found in the nature. The plant, Prosopis Juliflora, has it own organizational project as well. After the exploration of orgaizational system in both design project and the plant, we moved into a real architectural element, concrete block to design a new organizational system. We also learned about how to make concrete block by hand and finalized the idea to a physcial model. 36
