A Word From Ron... Hello, Guide to Golf readers! Spring/Summer – Golf Deals – Great Golf Deals, it’s time for the birds to fly and the locals to head to the course and play golf at reciprocal prices and super summer rates. For better than half a year, most courses whether private, semi-private or daily fee all have golf available at great prices. If you can play in the heat of the summer and duck the afternoon shower, then summer golf in Southwest Florida is the greatest. During the summer here, the ball flies farther, the tee times are open, and most courses welcome you with open arms. Some even provide a lunch special geared to the reciprocal play between courses. With close to 200 courses in our area, the opportunity to play some of the finest locations here is as simple as being a member anywhere and taking advantage of reciprocal rounds between courses. If you are not a member of a course or club you can buy one or two of the special discount golf books or discount cards available. Check in retail locations like Lumpy’s in Fort Myers to find some of the offers and specials available in the area. Many places provide golf and a cart for basically just a regular cart fee. One of those is Bonita National, a very unique course and special community being built by
4
Lennar Homes. If you are here during the “off-season”, be sure to take a ride out on Bonita Beach Road East and check it out. It’s new, it’s creative and they are always friendly and welcome visitors. I have been affiliated with a golf magazine here for the past eight years, first with the digest sized Naples Golfers Guide and following their closing, the new full size magazine, The Southwest Florida Guide to Golf. In this space in each edition of each magazine, it’s been fun for me to make a few editorial comments about some special golf courses and communities, to write about some local golfers and of course mention various golf activities in particular in Lee and Collier counties. It’s time for “Captain Ron” to hang up the lap top and pass the editorial page along. In the future I am happy to say, we will have a different editorial perspective from a different writer for each edition. That means more time on the course for me and for you some new and interesting commentary from a variety of local writers. I’ll see you at the course, and remember, fill those divots and fix those ball marks and always keep up with the group in front of you. Captain

We encourage ladies’ and men’s league play! Ride with low cart fees or walk anytime with no trail fee! Quail Run Golf Club is the home course for the Naples/Collier County First Tee program.
“Ball Position” I often hear the complaint; “I am not making great contact,” “I am hitting it to fat, or thin.” If this sounds like something that you might say, try moving the ball back or forward in your stance. This is a great way to find out where the bottom of your swing is and start becoming a better ball striker!

New Greens next fall
San Carlos will be rebuilding the greens this summer starting April 27th. San Carlos will remain open throughout the summer. The front nine will close April 27th and play will be restricted to the back nine for 3-6 weeks while the greens are reconstructed and re-grassed. Following that, temporary greens will be used on the front nine while the back nine undergoes the same process as the front nine. After another 3-6 weeks the back nine will reopen, with temporary greens with the goal of reopening with the new greens in late September or early October.

RHYTHM:
Naturally sets up the rest Often times golfers mistakenly think the words “rhythm” and “tempo” are one in the same, but they aren’t. Rhythm describes the order in which the parts of your swing move; allowing the natural flow of the swing to take place. Conversely, tempo defines the pace of your swing and whether it is slow or fast. It has been my experience that the focus on rhythm creates tempo.
Given the focus on one or the other, rhythm is the more important of the two. Over the years, I have seen many successful golfers with both fast and slow tempo’s, but I’ve seen very few with poor rhythm. This is one factor that truly separates great players from poor or even average players. I will go out on a limb and say you will be hard pressed to find a great player without great rhythm. This is because good rhythm sets up the transition, or the way the club is set at the top before moving into the downswing. Players who produce this rhythm are able to maintain their positions creating better and more consistent angles working into impact and ultimately providing more control. Here is a great drill to help you find your very own rhythm I am referring to. Feet together drill: Using either an 8 or 9 iron, hit balls with your feet close together. After addressing the ball with your feet almost touching, make a three quarter back swing allowing the shoulders, chest and hips to all rotate around the lower body. Because the feet are close together, this will force you to find a rhythm we are looking for which is that connection between the body parts. The tempo side of the drill will help you learn the speed of your swing. If you swing too slow you will feel stuck and primarily hit the ball with just your arms. If you swing too fast then you will fall off balance. This will help you learn feel for motion consequently forcing you to create a balanced tempo. Try this drill the next time you are on the range to help find the rhythm and tempo that is right for you. And remember, a good rhythm will allow you the ability to create a more consistent swing resulting in better shots allowing your natural tempo to emerge.

Interest in Improving
Your Golf Game Just Isn’t If you
Enough
want to improve your game, you have to operate with a mindset that will enable you to reach your goal. I work with a lot of golfers who tell me how much they WANT to play better, but they don’t always commit to walk the talk. Working on your technique and having regular sessions with your instructor are important. But golf is not about working harder, it’s about playing SMARTER — and smart golf requires a dedication to better thinking in order to produce better results. One of the biggest lessons I teach my clients is to fully understand the difference between interest and commitment when it comes to their game. Kenneth Blanchard said, “When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.” Think about how that quote relates to your approach to the game. Do you think good thoughts and trust your swing only when things are going well? Do you wait for your performance to prove to you why should feel confident about your ability? Or do you play with a mindset that helps you operate with excellence on every shot? To play great golf you must be 100% committed with every thought, on every shot, every hole, every day. This level of commitment requires passion and discipline. Passion is what drives you to keep investing in the game, and discipline gets you over the rough patches, when things are not working.
Are you truly committed to your game? Do you focus on what you can and will do, or do you allow excuses to hold you back from really seeing what you can accomplish? If your commitment could use a swift kick in the seat, then perhaps it’s time for you to invest some time in your mental game. Our clients play rounds worth bragging about, and so can you. To find out more about the mental game private sessions and group clinics I offer at Tiburon, please contact me today at 239.431.6810. For more TOP mental game tips, visit my blog at www.TheTopInstitute.com I look forward to working with you to teach you how to unleash your Inner Champion! To your golf success! Dr. Shannon Reece
Sport psychologist & founder of Training for Optimal Performance, Dr. Reece teaches junior, collegiate, amateur and pro-level golfers how to maximize their performance by leveraging their greatest assets to unleash their Inner Champion, and consistently perform at the top of their game. If you are ready to start playing the golf of your dreams, contact Dr. Reece today!
So what does 100% commitment look like? • It’s choosing to create thoughts that align with the outcomes you desire • It’s choosing to play with the clubs and shots that are working • It’s choosing to learn from your setbacks • It’s choosing to focus on your victories on every hole, even the tough ones These are the choices that allow you to play with a mindset that will help you face any challenge from a place of strength, and enjoy the adventure of the game. Golfers who are 100% committed don’t settle for less than giving their best to every shot, and holding nothing back. It’s knowing in your gut while you stand over the ball that this shot is going to be nothing less than great.

Lower Annual Carrying Costs In “Bundled” Golf Communities
I’ve been told by a number of my well-traveled clients that the “bundled” golf community concept is proprietary to Southwest Florida. I haven’t been able to confirm this, but during my 9+ years of specializing in residential real estate sales in SWFL golf communities, I’ve observed that a large percentage of my Buyers have opted for the economic sensibility of purchasing a home in a “bundled” golf community. For Buyers that can be down here only a few months of the year, it’s often difficult to justify paying the $25,000-$40,000 upfront initiation fees of even our most-affordable “equity” country clubs, let alone those of our higher-priced clubs. “Bundled” golf communities—which include a full-golf membership with the purchase of any type of home without the payment of an initiation fee—offer a viable lower-cost purchase option. In addition, the on-going annual golf membership dues in “bundled” golf communities are typically about half of those charged by “equity” clubs. The “mix” of homes in “bundled” golf communities also contributes to an overall annual savings, because these communities typically have a larger offering of multi-family homes— condos, verandas, carriage homes, and coach homes—which have lower overall annual expenses than single family homes. These lower expenses result from homeowner’s insurance, exterior building maintenance, lawn & landscaping, and irrigation water expenses being pro-rated to each owner in the building as part of their HOA and/or condo fees. And, just as retail stores have to pay close attention to the prices of their nearby competitors, “bundled” golf communities have to do the same in order to remain competitive to prospective Buyers. Some “bundled” clubs can justify higher annual costs by offering additional, and/or newer, facilities and amenities; but, overall, they have to be very careful about getting out-of-line on their annual costs.
By Joe Morgan
In my experience, most Buyers end up asking the same question as they compare homes in various golf communities…”what are my annual carrying costs”? As a point of reference, the following is a simplified, but relatively accurate average of the annual costs for a $250,000 multi-family home in Southwest Florida’s newer “bundled” golf communities… • Golf/Social Membership Fee $5,000 • Master HOA & HOA/Condo Fees $5,400 • Real Estate Taxes $2,800 = ANNUAL TOTAL $13,200
Obviously, taxes will increase with a more expensive home purchase. The total cost will also increase if the community has any special assessments, a food and beverage minimum, CDD charges, etc. Owning your own golf cart will also add a “trail fee” to the total. But, you can also REDUCE the above expenses by going into our somewhat-older--but extremely well-maintained--“bundled” golf communities. The bottom-line is that “bundled” golf communities offer you a great option for minimizing and controlling the annual carrying costs of your new Southwest Florida golf home! SPECIAL INVITATION: Please go to my website (www. GolfHomeGuru.com) for more information on “bundled” golf communities, and to review my exclusive GOLF HOME GURU “Top 5 Bundled Golf Community” list. Traveling Golf for Fun As a PGA golf professional in Southwest Florida for over 20 years some of my fondest memories are the ones that involve taking members on golf outings. These outings were coordinated off season usually May through September. One particular outing that comes to mind was a trip up to the Ocala area with a group of 20 couples from Pelican’s Nest Golf Club. The trip consisted of three rounds of golf; Waterleaf in the Sarasota area on the way up, World Words in Brooksville on Saturday and Golden Ocala on Sunday morning. Each course held a friendly competition similar to what many private clubs organize for couples on Sunday afternoons. The events were fun, we mixed up the foursomes at each course. and the group really enjoyed the social event “party” held at the Hotel Saturday night.
closely with the professionals at the courses played we created that memory. Why not duplicate the process? Making that kind of impression sparked an idea so I have formed “Tee Up Travel LLC” “Tee Up Travel” is committed to creating memorable golf getaways for couples who cohabitate together and enjoy the service from Professionals promoting the game of Golf.
Doug Burnham PGA Owner “Tee Up Travel”
Why do I mention this event? It happened over 15 years ago and when I run into the members who were part of it, to this day they still reminisce how much they enjoyed that trip.
We want to exceed expectations and create memories for a life time. Tee Up Travel will coordinate Golf Getaways at Spectacular Destinations with resort style accommodations for Couples who enjoy a social atmosphere while participating in friendly competitions.
Looking back at that experience I realized all that happened is with the help of one of my assistants and by working

The Golf Doctor Golf
Tip
How to become a GREAT PUTTER! Two drills: Why and how to do them. Every golfer knows that the putter is the most used club in their bag during a round of golf and for most golfers, the least used in practice sessions. The reason the average golfer places more of an emphasis on the other clubs is because they feel that putting does not take the same coordination and physical skills that the full swing demands.
breaking putts are missed and where, along with how many down hill verses up hill putts. Another important factor is which green speeds do you putt best on and what speed of greens you will play on average. This green speed is called the “stemp reading” which you can find by asking the golf professionals in the golf shop.
Average golfers can dramatically lower their scores by starting with becoming a better putter. What is a good putter? A golfer who consistently during an 18 hole round has an average of 25 to 28 putts. In order to achieve any goal you must have a plan. We will call this “planned progressive practice”. I would like you to start first by keeping stats on your putting over the next 10 rounds of golf. This takes a little more time than one might think but is crucial to finding out exactly just what type of practice program would be right for you. Most golfers when I ask them to keep their putting stats only give me the number of putts during the round. What is important is how many putts are missed inside 10 feet and the dimensions of that miss, such as short left, long right, dead center short, lip outs and how many
Now we can organize a planned “progressive practice program”. In brief let’s start with lag putting, start 30 feet from the hole with 6 balls. Place a tee in the ground to mark your starting spot, taking your time try to lag all 6 balls to the hole but you must try to go past the hole but no more than 12 inches. You must find four angles giving you left to right and right to left, down hill and up hill situation shots. Your goal to get all balls to or just past the hole leaving no putt short! If you leave a putt short do it all again as a penalty for poor practice. Now for the short putts, go only 2 feet from the hole mark your position from the hole and try to make 18 in a row. Stay there until you do. These are two practice drills of about 20 that I use to build golfers to become good putters.
