A Word From Ron... Hello, Guide to Golf readers! Does it seem a little crowded out there on U.S. 41 or even route I-75? Maybe it is just a little more crowded, or maybe this whole economy thing is finally blowing over. Maybe there are just more visitors, golfers and beachgoers than ever before. The seasons are starting to look a little more like every year here in our special corner of Southwest Florida. While riding around good old U.S. 41, I saw a car carrier… no really, a car carrier and it was September 1st. The seasons may change weather-wise, but when it comes to golf, new residents and long term snowbirds, the “winter” season is quickly becoming more than a three-month blitz. Snowbirds, golfers and beachgoers are coming early and staying later. In fact it’s beginning to look like one big season for fall, winter and spring with summer actually picking up even more than ever before. Let’s face it: those of us who live here year-round know that it just gets cold “up there”. We are finding that what was traditionally a little January to March mass influx of golfers and beachgoers has now become a steady stream of visitors and returning residents. When it comes to golf, the daily fee courses are finding more activity with more playing time being used. Revenues are increasing because of a revived economy and the traveling golfer is coming back to play more often. A number of private equity clubs are reaching out to find new members as their seniors slow down their playing habits, and the courses and communities start to vie for younger players. Even bundled communities, where memberships and fees are part of the annual cost of living, are finding that there is some turnover and they, too, are looking for new owners.

4

Almost all golf-related venues are now chasing new enthusiastic younger players, whether snowbirds or retirees. They are looking for members. There are all types of membership offers, like preview memberships, executive memberships, junior memberships, resident and non-resident memberships, trial memberships, equity memberships, social memberships, and many more. Each club or community has its own unique offerings and opportunities. You can find a number of top locations in this magazine. If you are new here, then you may also want to look many of these communities are REALTORS® who represent them in this publication. The REALTORS® who advertise with us are among the most knowledgeable, experienced agents you will find in this area. They can successfully assist you in finding the ideal golf community home that fits your golf lifestyle. With close to 200 courses, and with the reputation for having more golf holes per capita than any other location in the country, the in depth knowledge about local golf is a basic requirement met by all you find here in this publication. Take advantage of that local knowledge whenever you can. This year, once again, we will be one of the sponsors of the Franklin Templeton Shark Shootout and the Ace Group Classic. Be sure to stop by and say hello…you may even win a free membership to one of our top local courses or pick up some tips from the world famous Golf Doctor, Mike Calbot. We’ll be looking for you! Until the next issue, keep up with the group in front you, fill those divots, fix those ball marks and play well!

The Race Ends Here. The CME Group Tour Championship is the grand finale of the 2014 LPGA Tour season, and is also the finish line for the season-long Race to the CME Globe. The tournament will be played at Tiburón Golf Club at the Ritz Carlton Golf Resort Nov. 20-23, 2014. The world’s best players will be on hand to compete for the $2 million purse with the tournament winner taking home $500,000 and the winner of the Race To The CME Globe will take home a $1 million bonus. Southwest Florida golf fans, year round and seasonal residents and corporate clients and their guests will witness not only great

6

November 18 – 23, 2014 Tiburón Golf Club, Naples golf, but a possible historic payday if one player should win both the tournament and the Race to the CME Globe. “Our field is truly the best of the best; you don’t get to Naples without qualifying by winning a tournament or qualifying through points. The talent you’ll see on the course is just as impressive as the potential payout,” said Tournament Director Gail Graham. “The LPGA and its players do an amazing job of engaging with the fans and here in Naples, where the golf community is so passionate, it is the perfect setting to end the season.” The tournament brings global attention to Florida’s Paradise Coast – including Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades – via a vast television audience. Last year’s live Golf Channel broadcast reached 127 million homes in 158 countries. More than 70 media representatives cover the tournament including writers from the Associated Press, Naples Daily News, USA To-

day, ESPN, GOLF Magazine, and more. Additionally, the event garnered international coverage from media outlets in Germany, China and Japan. Local residents enjoy golf just as much as fans are globally. Mike Whan, Commissioner of the LPGA referred to Naples/Fort Myers TV market one of the LPGA Tour’s highest rated cities, another validation that Naples can be considered “Golf Capital of the World.”

Chipping around the green

Head Golf Professional

Mike Spetsios

8

The two mistakes most commonly seen for shots around the greens are a poor set-up and a chipping motion that brings the wrists into play during the stroke. When chipping anywhere inside 30 yards, set up with a narrow, open stance and the ball positioned just inside the back foot. The majority of your weight should be on the front foot even to the degree of feeling like you are leaning towards the target. This also enables the hands to be ahead of the ball which will promote a descending path on the downswing. In the stroke itself, there is minimal wrist hinge in the backswing and none in the forward portion of the swing. The wrist angle should remain constant through contact. The wrists should not break as the ball is struck, with the hands remaining in front of the club face at all times. If your chipping problems still persist, please consult your local PGA Professional.

Every player needs a little

BALANCE in their game Balance is such an important attribute in one’s golf swing. It promotes consistency in the path of the swing and helps maintain a square club face throughout. Balance will also help produce one of the most important positions in golf which is your impact position. Here are some quick tips to help promote correct balance. Setup: At address, your weight should be balanced equally more towards the insteps and balls of both feet -- not toward the heels or the toes. This will put you in an athletic ready position. From this dynamic position, your body is ready to stay balanced while moving in any direction. If your weight falls on your toes, the club head will tend to start outside the target line. If your weight rests on your heels, the path will tend to be too inside. 1. Close your eyes and feel your balance at address, then make a backswing and stop at the top. You should feel your balance on the instep of your back foot. 2. Start your downswing by feeling weight move to the front foot stopping in your impact position. Your weight should now be on the front foot. 3. Continue your swing to the finish position and hold. If properly balanced, you should be able to feel your weight on your front foot while being able to tap your back foot into the ground. By following these simple steps it will create the correct balance needed in producing a more consistent swing path and impact position. This results in generating more club head speed maximizing power and distance.

Better

posture for a better game!

Poor Posture A

Poor Posture B

Good posture is imperative for hitting consistent golf shots. Most golfers are so out of balance before they make their swing that they are never going to hit the ball solid or control their shots.

Here are four photos with only one balanced position. Let’s start with the correct posture balanced position. Always bend from the hip joints keeping the spine position as natural as you can. The knees flex so the center of the knee is centered over the arch of

20

the foot. If we were to hang a club from the front of the back shoulder, in this case the right shoulder, it would hang plumb to the front of the feet. If we then took a club and held it against our hip joint, it would hang to the back of the foot. So in looking in a mirror at your posture, your hips are over your heels the shoulders are over the toes and the knees are in the center of the foot or arches. The clubs distance from the body can be measured simply by removing your bottom hand while maintaining your posture position, spreading your fingers and thumb apart wide and with your palm facing the ground you place the little finger to the cap of the club (the cap is the top of the grip) and the thumb to the body. We call this the one hand spread measurement, your hand for your body. You will find the measurements to work for all clubs in which the full swing is being made.

Correct Posture

What is good posture? Good posture is where the body’s center of mass is over the center or arch of the feet. This distribution of your body mass and the proper spine angle, leg flex and clubs distance from the body all play into making a consistent pivot.

Golf Tip by “The Golf Doctor” Mike Calbot

Poor Posture C

Mike Calbot is a swing analyst and master golf instructor. The Mike Calbot International Golf Studio & Schools are located at Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero, FL To contact call : 239-482-0900 or visit on the web at : www.golfdoctorusa.com

In looking at the photo’s A, B, C, we see exactly what not to do. Photo “A” the weight is to far back and the spine unnatural. In photo “B” the weight is to forward with straight locked knees. In photo “C” the golfer is too bent over with the club too low and close to the body. The back is not natural the legs are locked and the arms have too much tension. I guarantee if you improve a poor posture position you will improve your swing. If you love golf you’ll love playing better! Better golf with the Golf Doctor Mike Calbot. WWW.GOLFDOCTORUSA.COM

Stoneybrook JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAM Open to all ages from 4 to 17 Stoneybrook’s Junior Golf Program is intended to inform, develop, and provide an opportunity for kids in the community to grow through the game of golf. The Medalist Program covers different areas of the game each week including the rules of golf and proper etiquette on and off the course. The life and golf skills that are taught are investments that will prove to be truly priceless for the kids in our community. We want to strive to offer kids a variety of opportunities to improve at their sport through instructional programs. These programs are designed to prepare kids for tournament play through a series of steps. Jeff Nixon, PGA Jeff has been a pillar for golf instruction in southwest Florida for the past twenty years. Jeff is a graduate of Cape Coral High School and is a Class A member with the PGA of America. He has won multiple awards including the 2006 Teacher of the year and the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Player Development Award.

Jordan Ball, PGA Jordan graduated from FGCU where he has received his Bachelors Degree in Professional Golf Management and his Class A membership with the PGA. Jordan has been teaching since 2009 and is currently a big contributor to Stoneybrook’s golfer development programs. He has been a visionary in the development of the program and is excited about the opportunity to work with your child today! Tuesday nights from 5 to 6:30 we offer a program to kids involved in team golf. This is a more advanced program than Saturdays and Wednesdays and is structured to help team golf members improve in tournament play. This consists of shot making and intensive short game practice. Focusing on Your Score Why

Will Prevent You from Posting a Good One

Before teeing off on the first hole, do you know what you want to shoot for the day? Do you know exactly what your score is at any point throughout a round? If you answered “yes” to either of those questions, then there is something important you should know. The more time you spend thinking about your score, the more you can actually hurt your chances of posting a good one at the end of the round. Your score is not something over which you have direct control, and golfers who allow their thinking to get wrapped up in the numbers of the game during play are wasting mental energy. What you can control is how well you prepare for and execute one shot at a time. The more you maintain a present-centered focus, the higher the probability that you will produce solid shots and reduce miss hits, giving yourself the best opportunity to cumulatively achieve the score you desire.

To find out more about the mental game private sessions and group clinics I offer at Tiburon, please contact me today at 239.431.6810. For more TOP mental game tips, visit my blog at www.TheTopInstitute.com I look forward to working with you to teach you how to unleash your Inner Champion!

Golfers make the game harder than it was designed to be when they allow their thinking to get off track. If you tend to think about what you are shooting or could make on the next hole, while attempting to concentrate on your next shot, your focus is split between the future and the present. Have you ever thought, “Wow! If I keep this up, I could actually break 90 today!” This is an example of a future-oriented focus. Throw in some thoughts about the poor shot you’d like make up for on the last hole, and now you are pin-balling between the past, present and future.

Sport psychologist & founder of Training for Optimal Performance, Dr. Reece teaches junior, collegiate, amateur and pro-level golfers how to maximize their performance by leveraging their greatest assets to unleash their Inner Champion, and consistently perform at the top of their game. If you are ready to start playing the golf of your dreams, contact Dr. Reece today!

To your golf success! Dr. Shannon Reece

The goal to staying present-centered is to let go of the score, the past, and the “what if ’s” of the future, so that all that remains is a commitment to give 100% of your attention to the shot at hand. You need to consciously choose to play one shot at a time. If you average 90 shots per round, then set your expectations around the fact that you have 90 individual opportunities to execute one great shot. It’s only when you keep your mind focused on the task at hand, the ball at your feet, regardless of anything that occurred in the past, or might happen in the future, that you operate with your full mental and physical resources to produce a solid shot. By doing so on every shot, you increase the probability of stringing together a series of great performances that ultimately lead to the score you wanted to post. Your biggest challenge will be to catch yourself the moment your thinking veers from the present to the past or future, and pull yourself back on track, by releasing your need to try to control or dictate the future or change the past. Your power lies in the present alone. To direct your focus anyplace else simply limits your potential.

Daily Fee Golf Daily fee golf in Southwest Florida. Depending on what golf publication you read, internet site you scan or consulting group you listen to, golf is either flourishing or floundering. It’s just a matter of economics and seasonality. The commodities are tee times with the supply and demand affected greatly based on what month it is. This, in large part, is why prices as much as quadruple from summer to winter and have just as many variants in the shoulder months of November, December and April.

Golf in Southwest Florida the last two years has been very strong – during the winter season. Northerners and foreigners have flocked to the Sunshine State to enjoy our fine courses and weather. They have also not been bashful with their purchasing power. A few local facilities experienced record to near record numbers this past season.

By Mike Spetsios, Head Golf Professional at San Carlos

However, with the good, the bad still lingers. May through October creates great challenges. An over supply of courses, pricing wars, private facilities allowing “outside play,” online vendors “dumping” tee times and excruciating temperatures along with tropical rain and thunderstorms have created an environment in which facilities run at a loss for most of the summer. Not a business model which economists would recommend. However, optimism reigns as golfers and golf professionals look forward to the 2015 season with great enthusiasm. If you haven’t played recently, call a friend, book a tee time and enjoy the “spirit” of a great game.

If you’re a full-time resident, AFG has year-long events and activities for every member of the family! There is truly something for everyone at AFG! Conveniently located off the Alico Road exit, (exit 131) off I-75 in Fort Myers, AFG is situated on 30 acres and has an abundance of activities for the avid golfer, beginners and everyone in between! Perhaps one of our most family-friendly activities is our SNAG® -friendly: Starting New at Golf. Our SNAG® -friendly course is one of just two in the entire nation! No matter what level player you are, SNAG® is fun for all ages! SNAG® brings Moms, Dads and the kids together for play – and a note to Grandparents…your grandkids, whether living here or visiting, will absolutely love our SNAG® -friendly course! So, now you’re probably wondering…what is SNAG®? What is SNAG®? SNAG® Golf has built a premier learning system recognized by industry leaders around the world as a superior method to teach golf fundamentals in a fun and easy way. The SNAG® Golf System contains age-appropriate equipment and programming to effectively teach the game of golf to people of all ages and ability levels. SNAG® contains all the basic elements of golf, but in a modified form. The game has its own simplified rules and terminology, which adds fun to the learning and playing experience. Falling somewhere between miniature golf and regulation golf, SNAG® allows for full shots, pitching, chipping and putting. It’s really an amazing system that lets families not only learn together, but play together too! SNAG® is a great way to spend quality time with the kids and teach them a sport that provides skills, enhancing every part of their lives.

An Abundance of Family Activities However, the fun does not end there at Alico Family Golf! If you’re an avid golfer, spend some time at our driving range and short game area to practice your shot, while Mom and the kids take advantage of our miniature golf course. When you’re done, check out our full-service golf shop right on-site, courtesy of The Golf Guys, and then your family can enjoy a bite and refreshments at our clubhouse café! Additionally, we hold special events, golf lessons, clinics and leagues year-round, and we host corporate and team-building events, birthday parties or any special event! Have out-of-town visitors or a family reunion coming up? AFG is the perfect place for making family fun and memories!
