“Porsche Parade” is the official magazine of The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. (ACN 005 727 0942)

Welcome to the summer issue of Porsche Parade. As the year’s events are now rapped up I reflect on the past twelve months and what a great year it has been for the Club. Competition, Social and Registers have continued to go from strength to strength and many thanks to everyone who has written a story or taken photos for Porsche Parade this year. This magazine is not only an entertaining read but an important history reference of the club recording its events and results. Next year is the 40th anniversary of the club with some exciting events planned to celebrate the Clubs Milestone’s - keep an eye on your email for upcoming events. It’s been a few years since we have run the photo competition so start snapping away over the holidays. If it’s a great picture and includes your Porsche send it in and we will publish it next year with the winner being announce in the last issue of 2015 - Winning prize still to be announced.

Onto official business. The last quarter has been a busy one for the Club. In this issue we cover President’s Day, the AGM, The Last Run, the Show n Shine at Motorclassica, and the Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation Night at the Langham Hotel. And as usual Registers continue to shine with Modern 911 and Turbo, Boxster Cayman, Mid 911 and Torque Tube registers all present in rear of the magazine. Will and I visit former Club person of the year John Baker in Geelong for this instalment of WIYG. A wet day seeing John bog his trusty 2.7!

club committee 2014/15

president’s message Welcome to the summer edition of the best car club magazine in Australia, and my first contribution as President. Since our last magazine, we have run the Annual General Meeting and Club night, The Gembrook and Last Run social runs, the passenger oriented President’s Day at Sandown, several Register runs and of course the Annual Dinner. The 2014 calendar has seen a quality and quantity of events that continues a grand tradition as typified by the richness of those last 3 months. Articles appear elsewhere in the magazine, and I recommend you browse through them to either recall a great day or think about enjoying a future event. The Annual Dinner is a good example. There have been a number of changes in the last 3 or 4 years in response to formal and informal feedback from members on what works. We have moved between different venues, enjoyed a variety of entertainment and some great dance bands all aimed at delivering an event to celebrate the achievements of members on the track and be enjoyed by all who attend. Your Club is ably served by the Social, Register and Competition sub committees, and the General Committee of the Club. I would like to thank and congratulate them on the 2014 calendar, and look forward to an outstanding 2015. The Social committee plans a good start to next year, with the first Club Night being at the new Cairns workshop at Hallam and what looks to be a fantastic first run to a Polo match at Fiskville. Cars, roads, horses, good company, sunny weather (already booked) and a horse v car v helicopter race. What will they do for an encore? The Register Captains organise activities initially organised around specific registers and opened to the broader membership after a short priority period for that register. The smaller group size means that they can and do try many different activities, and we have seen tours to car museums, overnight stays, mechanical workshops poking around in the entrails and mysteries of the cars as well as exploration of some great roads. The registers are an important source of innovation in club activities. The track section of the club is a fundamental core of the attraction of this marque for so many of us. Over a year, the Competition Committee under the hardworking guidance of Tony Carolan,

the Competition Director, will organise the largest Club Competition Calendar in CAMS. 2015 already has booked circuit events at Phillip Island, Sandown Calder and Winton, a multi course motorkhana at DECA in Shepparton, hillclimbs at Bryant Park, the 4 hour regularity at Sandown and a sprint event at the marvellously complex and tight Broadford motorcycle circuit track. The competition rules review meeting conducted a month or so ago was the annual look at what rule changes would improve the competition calendar. Previous innovations include the highly successful new points system for 2014, and 2015 will include the new classes mooted to incorporate the newer more powerful and capable 991 and late model 997 cars in our “standard” classes. These cars have previously been too capable for the standard A-D classes, even after the addition of GT class a couple of years ago and had been orphaned into Open Class. Now they will have a home of their own, will you be an inaugural runner? I think you will find that whatever you drive, the track events and track classes will provide a niche for you to enjoy your car in a safe, fast and breathtaking environment, whether you do a handful of events a year, campaign the whole season or just tick off a bucket list item. One thing you should be sure of, and that is there is a place for every member on our track days. We have the organisation, the program and the introductory processes to ensure that our first time attendees enjoy the day. Enjoyment guaranteed – come and try it. If you haven’t yet attended a club event, you may be wondering what in the cornucopia of club events you should try first. There is no correct answer to that, except – try something. Literally hundreds of members have tried the track via the “Entrée” system on track days since it was initiated 6 odd years ago. Some are still trying to wipe the smile off their face. Other members try club nights or come on one of the Social or Register runs. Whatever takes your fancy we are looking forward to you participating in your club, enjoying the company of other members, and the noise and excitement of the best sports marque in the world.

Putting the date on this document I’m reminded that yet another year is rapidly drawing to an end and I really should get out there and do my Christmas shopping. Once again the social calendar has been jammed packed of events to enjoy catch up with friends both old and new and to give our wonderful German machinery the chance to make the most of the roads throughout the Victorian countryside.

and Geoff Janssen for arranging our guests. We thought three guests would have been a good fit for the evening but were overwhelmed with the engagement of each of their presentations and could have easily devoted separate evenings. Have a look at Janet Conheady’s article for full details.

I’m sad to announce that Leon Christodulaki has chosen to retire from the Social Committee, but thankfully Leon will be staying on with the General Committee to lend a hand. I am however pleased to announce that Alex Harmati has joined the Social Committee full of enthusiasm and looking forward to assisting where he can.

Show ‘n’ Shine – October 26th – PCV teamed up with Motorclassica for this year’s PCV Show ‘n’ Shine event that saw our 40 car limit book out quite early. PCV were given the primary picnic spot due to our numbers and continued support of this event. An early start of 7am was made easier with welcome coffee on offer and the magnificent selection of motoring history on display both inside and outside of the stunning Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton.

Forthcoming events:

PCV took out the award for Best Club Display.

For those of you unaware, 2015 is the 40th anniversary year for PCV. As such a couple of events will be held to commemorate the occasion. Two such events to mention will be:

I’d like to thank Meguiar’s car products for their support of PCV through Michael Bailey for this event.

•The PCV 40th Anniversary Celebration of which Andrew Bonwick is working away on with his 40th Anniversary sub committee. •The other one is the Summer Run on the 15th of February, Alf Carrigan has put together an extraordinary event comprising of our traditional drive followed by a VIP Polo Cup event. Entertainment includes: Polo Cup final A race between “Horse, Helicopter & Porsche” PCV car parade Summer Club Night – Cairns Classic Modern Porsche Services: We will be bringing a Porsche motor themed event to our members for the February club night and will be treated to a variety of Porsche motoring items on the evening. Details are currently being finalised. Previous events: Last Run – Rubens at Hepburn Springs – November 2014: Michael Bailey and Neil drew found a fabulous selection that included some new roads not used on a PCV event as well as some favourites around the Ballan countryside for the last run of 2014. The run was a more relaxed affair with a later start and earlier lunch enabling us to get home mid afternoon at this busy time of the year. The limited seats of 80 booked out very quickly and is a reminder to get in early for events to avoid the disappointment of missing out. AGM & October Club Night – Porsche Centre Melbourne: A big thank you to our presenters on the evening Boris Struk, Robyn Riley and club member Vickie Morris as well as Grant Stephenson

Annual Dinner 2014 – December 6th – At the time of writing this report the dinner is a matter of days away and promises to be on of the best Annual Dinners to date. For those whom attended, the Social Committee hopes that it lived up to your expectations. I’d like to acknowledge the huge amount of work carried out by Michael O’Brien, Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie in putting on this event. I’d also like to thank our two Masters of Ceremonies Will Darvall and Garry Voges for hosting the evening. Again a full account of the evening is in this edition of Porsche Parade.

and his staff at Porsche Centre Brighton for their continued support and assistance with events & club nights. Once more to our other sponsors in Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre and Nillumbik Cellars. As always in this very active club special mention thanks goes out to Carly and Lisa for their efficient and thorough work throughout the year. Social Committee: Our current Social Committee is made up of Andrew Bonwick, Avaro Del Gallo, Maria Del Gallo, Carly Pasco, Lisa Gillespie, Janet Conheady, Julia Anderson, Neil Drew, Wayne St Baker, Michael Bailey, Rowen Burnett, Monika Matlik and Alex Harmati. With thanks also to the contributions of Don Ballingall. This team is very passionate about providing PCV with premier events and works very hard to ensure you have a good selection of quality events to attend and make the most of your Porsche and interaction with fellow enthusiasts. On behalf of the Social Committee I’d like to wish you and your families very merry Christmas and happy new year, I hope that you all stay safe over this period. Thank you again for supporting our club and events, I look forward to seeing you in 2015. Regards, Felix Rieniets, PCV Social Director

from race control The PCV competition year has now drawn to a close with our last event being President’s Day at Sandown in early November. President’s Day was very successful with substantially more entries than last year and over 280 passengers enjoying a race track experience. A rough calculation would indicate that we gave our family and friends the thrill of approximately 3,500 high speed track kilometres on the day. By the time you read this we will have had the annual Dinner Dance and all the 2014 competition awards will have been presented. Club Champion went to a very worthy Ben Faggetter, who had an outstanding year breaking lap record after lap record. Open, M1 and M2 classes were won by Peter Fitzgerald, Bob Hawker and Ben Faggetter respectively, with GT, A, B, C and D classes being won by our immediate past President, Peter Harrison and Phil Treloar, Nick Karnaros, Simon Dunn and Garry Voges. Outright Champion saw Peter Fitzgerald come out a clear leader, followed by Ben Faggetter but with Peter’s son Christian edging ever closer to unseating dad. The new class structure for the 2015 competition has now been released and several new classes have been added to cope with the new, faster, lighter and more powerful vehicles that Porsche continues to come up with each year. Previously we have been forcing many of these vehicles to run in Open class due to their very high power to weight ratios. This put them up against very serious race cars and meant that they had to run on slick tyres

if they were to be competitive. Under the new classes standard late model cars will be able to run in as delivered, road registered condition and be competitive. Hopefully this will attract more 991 model owners to come and give the PCV competition a try. Next year’s calendar is shaping up well with 10 of the 11 events that we are hoping to run having already been booked. We are pleased to have DECA back on the calendar for the combined Queen’s Birthday Winton / DECA weekend. With the popularity expressed for Broadford this year, we have also secured another booking there in August. All the dates are up on the website so mark up your calendars. The two events that are scheduled for Phillip Island have been cleared to run at 95dBA noise limits rather that our usual 75dBA limit. This will certainly attract more entries and remove the problem that we had this year, but with the very limited number of 95dBA weekends available we will continue to work with the Phillip Island circuit management to seek a more robust solution somewhere in between the two current noise limits. The 4 Hour regularity is again on the calendar, this time in early May. We hope that this date, away from school holidays and mid winter will attract a lot more entries. The issue this year with having to push cars on the back apron into the garages has also been resolved. In

2015 we need to see a lot more PCV entries and we will be doing mass communication to all other car clubs in the next few weeks. Congratulations again to all our Championship Award winners, you have again shows what a great competition this is. I can hardly wait for next season to start and will look forward to seeing a great line up at Phillip Island on the first of February. Have a great Christmas and New Year and safe driving.

Porsche is also exhibiting the Panamera Exclusive Series, one of 100 units of the limited special edition of the Panamera Turbo S Executive, although this variant will not be sold in Australia. The four variants of the 911 Carrera GTS close the gap between the 911 Carrera S and the 911 GT3. The model available as coupĂŠ or convertible is equipped with either rear-wheel or allwheel drive and develops 316 kW (430 hp). The Sport Chrono package and other sporty optional features are fitted as standard equipment. The Cayenne GTS develops 323 kW (440 hp) and has an even sportier tuned PASM chassis with a ride height lowered by 20 millimetres, providing a further boost to driving performance. The third reveal at the Auto Show is the Panamera Exclusive Series which offers an especially luxurious combination of performance and exclusivity.

Although not a 911 the 968 remains a great value and fun to drive Porsche.

When new in Australia these models were approx. $120,000 - on todays market they will bring$45,000-$55,000 depending on history and condition. Peter Fitzgerald developed 4 of the 968 Turbo RS models from standard 968 M030’s and they were absolute rocket ships putting out 350plus BHP. One of these won the 50th 911 Porsche Rally here in Melbourne which I don’t believe impressed

A W oth an e te r d

There were approximately 14 M030 Club Sport 968’s that were delivered in Australia annually between 1993 and 1995. The only way to recognize a real 968 VC M030 is to check the Vin Number with Porsche Cars Australia. This model had special Recaro front seats color coded to the exterior and LSD bigger brakes. The only colors it came in were Black, Maritime Blue, Guards Red, Grand Prix white and Speed Yellow. The Wheels were 7.5 x 17” front and 9 x 17” Rear. The 3 Lt motor was the same standard as the rest of the 968 range.

The M030 did include shifter springs, shock absorbers and anti roll bars as well as Drilled Brake discs with the fronts enlarged to 304mm diameter and a 40% Torsen limited slip differential. This car got a great reaction from the Press and received Autocar and Motor Magazine awards as Prestige Car of the Year in 1993for its performance which included 0-100 in approx. 6.3 seconds.

The Standard 968 was available as a convertible as well as a standard coupe in 4 speed Auto and 6 speed Manual. The standard 968 came with Sun roof, Aircon, ABS and power steering and ranged from $15,000 to $30,000. The motor was a 3LT four cylinder putting out 240BHP. This was the first Vario Cam motor (variable cam timing).

A W oth an e te r d

A few years ago Jim Richards navigator Barry Oliver spoke at the Porsche Car Club and was asked if you wanted a Porsche for both road and track what would he recommend. His answer, a 968CS M030, in his words a “Fantastic Porsche”.

the factory being a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 911!

A W oth an e te r d

If you have been lucky enough to have driven a 968SC M030 on a race track (or even as a passenger) I would argue that you would agree how good and well balanced this models is.

In included ABS Brakes and a 20mm lowered suspension with firmer handling. No rear seats, wiper or alarm system were included and the external mirrors manually adjusted. The rear glass hatch had a manual pull ie was not electric. These omissions helped this car to be 50KG lighter than the standard

A W oth an e te r d

The Porsche 968 was clearly derived from the outgoing 944 Model however Porsche stated that the car was 83% new and had been restyled and re-engineered. On its release in 1991 the press canned the 968 saying it “lacked flair”.

what’s in your garage?

John with his pride and joy Spyder

He looks like Ned Kelly’s grandfather and drives Ned’s favourite vehicle, a Series 1 Land Rover. But wait, there’s more! John Baker “always wanted to have a Porsche by the time I’m 40” (sound familiar?), so in 2002 bought a ‘75 911, with flared guards and fat wheels, 3 months from the big birthday. Working in Geelong, he had often seen a peppermint green wide body cab, driven by, yep, a hairdresser, which had further fueled his desire (for the car). There was no way he was going to join a club of Porsche drivers, so came along with a mate to marshal at a few meetings. Naturally, he found all the marshals to be quite charming and delightful, so joined PCV in 2003. He rapidly gained marshalling skills and the Club Chief CAMS qualification, becoming a member of an elite group which acts as Clerk of Course or Senior Steward at competition events. John works as a dental prosthetist and for many years shared rooms in West Geelong with mum Pam, a podiatrist and dad Rodney, a chiropractor, until they retired 2 years ago. He now has the luxury of Mondays off, which gives him more time for his many projects. There must be lots of happy chompers in Geelong, because his craftsmanship is exquisitely neat and precise. He fitted out the PCV van and has made an elegant cup holder from strap aluminium for the 914, as well as a false tooth adorned with the Porsche badge, to be worn on special occasions. Son Isaac is a young doctor and Daughter Molly is studying Vet Science; Isaac marshalled with dad in the past, while Molly watched. He used to live in the Brisbane Ranges and was very active in the Anakie CFA. Many of you on PCV runs will remember the

Defender

scrumptious morning teas at the CFA, which featured John’s freshly cooked pancakes. The eclectic collection. A 1955 Land Rover Series 1 88 inch wheelbase (following the Series 1 80, produced from 1948) has been owned since 1980. Originally used for a lot of 4WD activities and competition with the Geelong 4WD Club, it was retired and fully restored by John over 3-4 years in the late 80’s, substituting a 186 Holden motor. The original prototype was designed by Maurice Wilks, Rover’s chief designer, on a Jeep chassis and axles. Phenomenally successful world wide, Land Rover is one of the iconic brands. By 1976, 1 million had been produced in a multitude of variants for civilian and miliary use. In a mind boggling number of ownership changes, Rover became part of British Leyland, then Land Rover became a separate company and was subsequently sold to British Aerospace, then BMW, Ford and Tata. In 1970, Range Rover was launched, which suited Ned, who was sick of sleeping in caves and bouncing around in the Land Rover.

One for 964 owners obviously! ISSUE 4, 2014

17

A 2010 Defender, one of the spin offs from the LR, which also includes Freelander and Discovery, is John’s daily driver and has a Ford Transit motor, following LR, Isuzu, and BMW 5 cyl motors used successively over the years, reflecting the changes of ownership. The ‘75 911, with a standard 2.7 K-jet motor, is getting long in the tooth, but John enjoys driving it for the challenge and the 911 feel. It is also partner Lucy’s favourite! The ‘71 914 is a rare vehicle in Oz, as they were never sold here, or made in RHD. They were produced from 1969-76, as a joint venture by Porsche and VW, with the 914/4 to be sold as a VW and the 914/6 (using the 911T 2.0) to be sold as a Porsche. However, in the USA, where the majority were sold, it was decided that a Porsche could not look like a VW, so they were all branded Porsche. In all, 115,000 914/4s were sold, with only a little over 3,000 914/6s, as their price approached that of a 911T. The 914/4s successively had 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 mid-mounted engines, ahead of a 901 4 speed, with 59- 74kW. The 1.7 in John’s car has been rebuilt to 2.0. Weight was 950 kg, so performance was adequate. They easily outsold 911s. Body shape looked quirky, mainly to do with the roof profile, but the lower body lines are superbly simple, low and neat, with retractable headlights, while 6” Fuchs add true Porsche style. The Targa roof sits flat in the large, fairly shallow boot. Many are still raced, usually with various 911 motors, or made into low, wide and mean street machines.

Porsche obviously borrowed its styling cue for the Spyder’s roof from Land Rover The 2011 Boxster Spyder is John’s pride and joy. It was produced on the 987 chassis as a lightened simplified sporting version and is loved by many PCV members. Weight was reduced by 80kg to 1275 kg, by deletion of the roof mechanism, radio/PCM unit, door handles, air con, storage compartments, cup holders and LED modules on the fascia, while suspension was lower and stiffer and power was increased to 239kW (320HP). It is about 40 kg less than the 981 Boxster. The rear straps for the soft top clip into simple brackets on the top of the boot and are tightened by shutting the boot. A removable panel fits under the rear of the top, behind the seats, to make the car weather proof. The twin humps running rearwards behind the seats reprise those of the 550 and previous 911 Speedsters.

John’s model collection started after John told his sister Viki that he wanted a Porsche for Christmas 14 years ago and she gave him a grey 356 model. It has grown to 215, mostly by patients bringing them. Non Porsche models get quietly discarded!

Show ‘n’ Shine Motorclassica Story: Felix Rieniets Photos: Felix Rieniets

Forgoing a Sunday morning sleep in was a small sacrifice to attend Motorclassica for the 2014 Show ‘n’ Shine. Aware of the sleep sacrifice, the Motorclassica crew ensured that plenty of morning coffee was on offer to assist with the early wake. This year’s collection of 40 cars was made up by a mixture of club members, some of whom were Show ‘n’ Shine veterans, others taking part for the first time and a number of new members making their social event debut. One such new member Bob Morgan was introduced to us at the October Club Night, when providing a response to the traditional question of “What model do you drive?”, Bob advised of his Cayenne S, but further quantified that “This one really does go off road”. No further proof required after seeing Bob’s Cayenne complete with its accessory kit. If I ever had to go camping, that would be the way I’d do it. As soon as were we in the gates and the vehicles linerd up, out came the microfiber cloths to make last minute touch ups ready for the scrutineering that was about to take place. Whilst there were no sheep stations on offer, it was clear to the effort and hours that have gone into maintaining and preparing these cars for display. The judging also being taken very seriously, especially in Masterclass where the cars came under meticulous scrutineering, the ever prepared Will Darvall even brought along his own Masterclass blanket to prevent him from being covered in dust as the underneath of the vehicles were inspected. Whilst the cars on display both inside and outside of Motorclassica was astounding with a fine selection examples from Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, MG, Mercedes, Maseratti etc., etc., the selection of PCV cars on display was truly magnificent with most of the models being represented. As the Motorclassica photographer, I scored a special treat and was able to get onto the roof of the Royal Exhibition Building to take some aerial shots, the collection was a stunning sight from the ground and equally as striking from the air. The cars were a huge hit with the public, a number of people stopping to see what the commotion was as the PCV attendees gathered for the presentation of the trophies. Norman Smith’s 997 Carrera 4S took out the Public’s choice award and Colin Moss’s 930SE took out Members Choice. Damien Cruickshank beat off some fierce competition to win Masterclass in his 996 Carrera. And the awards didn’t stop there, PCV took out Motorclassica’s best club display award and trophy, a very proud moment for the club and attendees. In an attempt to refine some of the awards and the criteria in which they would be awarded, some changes were made. As an example some badge designations such as 911 Turbo, GT, RS etc. were incorporated into their model groupings and track class cars needed to have competed in PCV track events and were awarded points for each track event they competed in.

President’s Day Story: Simon Dunn Photos: Ron Widdison & Simon Dunn

President’s Day, is the quintessential opportunity to experience Porsche and Porsche Club Victoria. The members that enjoy the marvellous motorsport competition conducted by the club throughout the year get to show off and share the experience of being on the race track in a Porsche on day where fun and safety are the paramount concerns. The day gives those who want to feel and be part of motorsport a chance to jump in the passenger seat of a Porsche racing around Sandown Raceway for free. It is also an opportunity for the members that compete to share the experience and perhaps try to justify the obsession with loved ones, friends and colleagues. 2014’s Presidents day was well supported with a lot of interesting examples of the Marque. Seventy entries, up from fifty five the previous year. Theo Mihelakos alone entered three cars for himself and Nick Foster to drive. Yes, that name should sound familiar. Nick was back in Melbourne having won the Surfers Paradise round of the Carrera Cup the previous weekend. As is always the story in Melbourne the day offered a mix of weather conditions. The track being wet at times, and wet just in some parts at times was a real test for many of the drivers to adhere to the strict safety rules for this event. Ten drivers were sent home for their inability to keep their cars pointing in the right direction. Safety is the most important factor in the day being run successfully with the support of CAMS. There was even a bicycle race for those who had not had enough competition throughout the year. It appeared Michael O’Brien was somewhat out of place. Kitted up in his custom designed Porsche Lycras looked like he was a jockey ready to race than a Tour de France contender. 2013 Club Champion, Rick Moscati took the honours. To be known hereafter as the barnacle for sticking so well to the younger riders before blasting past them in the last 200 meters to win. Perhaps someone should have told the riders that there were no points on offer for the race. Having taken over 280 passengers throughout the day, many drivers, members and friends of the club retired to a couple of the garages for a round of drinks and a bite to eat. It was a nice relaxed way to finish off a great day, and a fantastic year with the Porsche Club Victoria.

November 23rd saw 80 club members meet at the departure spot known as BP Rockbank. This was to be a run with a difference as there was no morning tea at a CFA. So a later start of 10am meant a great drive straight to lunch. Michael Bailey and Neil Drew picked some well chosen roads that guaranteed a great drive of 146KM, with a ‘pit’ stop in Trentham. There was a great mix of Porsche models on the day from Mid 911s to 991s and a Panamera! The run was timed perfectly as our hosts had our welcome drink and freshly prepared pizza breads ready prior to our 2 course of choice meal. This was very well organized by the Ruben’s staff at Hepburn. We had a raffle with a difference also (why not be different!) attached to our run notes was a playing card cut in half, which was to be our raffle ticket. 6 lucky winners were 42

presented with local wines from a random system of ‘out of the box’. Felix was as usual a busy man photographing everything in sight ‘and’ a great display of 3 Porsche 911s, all of them white at the front of Rubens - that made a great sight for anyone driving past. As mentioned earlier, 80 club members, including June Oldham (it was lovely to have her join the run) enjoyed a well run and planned day plus the event was fully booked weeks out with a small waiting list! This illustrates club members’ enjoyment of these runs and register events alike. During the lunch period Alf Carrigan spoke of the 1st run next year in February at the Polo. This is for a maximum of 100 people and within three days on the club website over 60 members had already booked the event, so another great run day will be enjoyed.

The run home was eventful for most as once rejoining the highway at Ballan the traffic quickly came to a crawl and then stop and crawl! I’m told some took nearly 2 hours to get back to Melbourne. We quickly did a U turn and went back to Geelong via Ballan and that ‘gravel’ section! The 80KM sign should have been 40 as the rocks were the size of golf balls! At Fiskville Al’s GT3 coolant light came on, what next! Inspection by Michael Bailey revealed little or no coolant so a slow run to Anakie revealed a lack of coolant period! An entire bucket of warm water meant we may get back home in one piece. Thanks to Michael Bailey for staying with us for the return trip to make sure we arrived safely – being towed by a Mazda 3 would not have been a good look at all.

911 Turbo and Cayman GTS dominate MOTOR magazine’s Performance Car of the Year sho Porsche scores a double podium in Australia’s ultimate performance car test Australia. The Porsche 911 Turbo and Cayman GTS swept to a convincing 1-2 result in Australia’s only annual award dedicated exclusively to performance cars. The Porsche sports car duo brushed aside performance car contenders from Germany, England, France, Japan and Australia to record an emphatic triumph. The Stuttgart sports car specialist has now recorded 11 wins in the 19 years of MOTOR’s prestigious award; the 991-type 911 Turbo providing book ends to when the 993-type 911 Turbo won the inaugural Performance Car of The Year title in 1996. MOTOR’s test is run extensively over three days with more than 1,000 kms of driving on road and track. The 911 Turbo scored maximum points in all performance disciplines of acceleration, braking and lap time as well as maximum subjective scores from all five judges as the best performance car of 2014. The newly released Cayman GTS finishing second is a major achievement given the mid-engined sports car gave away engine size, performance and power to more fancied rivals – underlying yet again the ethos of Porsche Intelligent Performance where balance and the sum of the parts are more critical than engine size and kilowatts alone. “We expected the 911 Turbo to be a major contender and that proved to be the case,” said MOTOR editor Dylan Campbell. “But the real surprise was the Cayman GTS. It has the perfect blend of poise, power and feel to make it a very compelling sports car that punches well above its weight.”

Richards tames giant with impressive Targa High Country win

Jim Richards has taken his second straight tarmac rally victory aboard the Porsche Cayman S at the three-day Targa High Country event last weekend. Based at the Victorian ski resort of Mount Buller, Richards and his co-driver Barry Oliver claimed an 11-second victory in the Showroom class over the course of 22 stages. Richards ran towards the front of his class throughout the rally and ultimately claimed the narrow win over his nearest rivals, who were equipped with a more powerful 2010 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. For Richards, the win was made more special by illustrating the 325 hp Cayman S as a reliable and equally impressive tarmac rally car after beating the 6.2-litre supercharged V8-powered Corvette at 640 hp - almost double the horsepower of the Cayman S. “The rally was a mixture of fast, open flowing stages and tight and twisting stages. We were disadvantaged on some and performed really well on others. On the fast stages the Corvette was only a few seconds faster, then on the tight twisting stages we could often hold a quicker overall speed,” said Richards.

“It was the nimbleness of the Cayman S that helped us take the class win in the end, along with its precise handling. It’s a great feat beating strong competition in much more powerful machinery. Though that’s what we’re here for, to show what this impressive little car can do.” The class victory is Richards’ second in the Cayman S in three tarmac rallies. Richards first campaigned the mid-engine sports car in May’s Targa Tasmania where he sustained damage on the penultimate day and ultimately retired. Richards then claimed the Cayman S’s first Showroom class win in the Perth-based Quit Targa West tarmac rally in August. Richards’ next confirmed tarmac rally event is next year’s Targa Tasmania, beginning on April 27, 2015.

Club Night at Porsche Centre Melbourne Tuesday 19th August 2014

The evening started a little earlier than usual with the Annual General Meeting taking place at 6.30pm. A good attendance was very pleasing as a reflection of the serious interest our members have for the welfare of their club and also is a reflection of appreciation in the great efforts of the Treasurer and Committee in providing pleasing financial results for the club. This was also an opportunity to thank Peter Harrison for his tireless efforts as general committee member for 6 years including the last 2 as President. This was followed by a few drinks, finger food and lots of friendly chatter. The format of tall tables and waiters serving finger food led to members being able to catch up with other club members that are now great friends through our wonderful social events. We all returned to our theatre style seats to hear our club news and our interesting guest speakers. Wayne St Baker filled us in on the Registers’ news and reminded us that register runs are open to all club members after the particular register has been given first option. Michael Bailey then spoke of an invitation from Porsche Club Tasmania to participate in a Run around Tassie – that is literally, likely to take PORSCHE PARADE 48

place mid next year but Michael will keep us posted as further details become available.

breathing enough lead to ventilation each night which worked well for a while but lead to 24/7.

Other reminders were of our milestone year next year with the 40th Anniversary of the club and to watch out for social activities to celebrate next year. The Annual Dinner at the Langham which is great value for money this year and the last run to Ruben’s at Hepburn Springs – limited numbers so book soon!!

MDA, not only is the acronym for the association but also means MAKE A DIFFERENCE – working to discover a cure, ease symptoms and now provide important respite for sufferers.

Our first guest for the evening was Boris Struk. Boris is the founder of Muscular Dystrophy Australia and dad to Ryan a sufferer of Muscular Dystrophy. Boris explained how muscular dystrophy destroys muscles minute by minute. One in one thousand people suffer from Muscular Dystrophy in some form. By the age of 8 young Ryan was in a wheel chair, by 14 he had steel rod inserted in his body to keep him upright. At 16 or 17 lethargy from not

An important benefit for families of muscular dystrophy is that MDA is now able to be there to be contacted by families when they get the first diagnosis and they can gain comfort from knowing they are not alone. Great news by the end of this presentation was that Boris was able to share the news that Ryan is now 34 years old!! Boris’ efforts have led to him being a nominee for the 2015 Australian of the Year and Australian Local Hero, plus he’s also just been named a finalist in the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

Vickie Morris had us all enthralled with interesting stories and happenings involving her work in the film and television industry – some strange, some funny, some beautiful! All the while Vickie was sharing her talents on our fabulous model, Carly. Unfortunately for Carly she didn’t look quite so fabulous at the end but Vickie had achieved an outstanding looking battle weary Carly as the attached photos will show. I think Hudson and Delani would have been quite horrified if they had seen their Mum at this point!

Vickie is a club member and did a wonderful presentation, she has an amazing website which is worth a look at and is available to assist with ALL types of hair and make-up – Vickie does beautiful brides, models and special events as a professional make-up artist. Our final presentation was the very talented artist Robyn Riley. Robyn is rather unique – her particular talent is automotive artwork. Robyn spoke mainly of an amazing piece she displayed on the night which was a drawing of

the dashboard of a Porsche 356, owned by a member of the Dutton Family. Robyn also displayed a Vincent motorcycle engine which showed her exquisite attention to detail and also a partially completed aeroplane engine. A memorable comment Robyn made was her husband’s theory that she loves anything that turns petrol into noise! Robyn has a truly unbelievable talent and deserves every success.

A short story by: Gerrit Hartland

The Porsche

Matthias was Viennese and a Porsche fanatic; had been one ever since as a school boy, on a school excursion, he had visited the Porsche auto museum in Pfeifhofer. There he fell in love with the 911 Carrera on display and swore to himself that he would own one someday. He visualised himself at the Nürnburgring after the 24 hour race, on the victory podium with the trophy aloft, surrounded by decorative girls, the adoring crowd at his feet. As many Austrian boys of that time did, he saw himself as the next Niki Lauda bringing honour and prestige to his country, not as in Niki’s case in a Ferrari but in a Porsche. There were however two problems with this daydream and they were pretty insurmountable actually. He did not have a Porsche and he was scared of driving fast. Still the dream persisted. When he finished school he found a job in one of Vienna’s prestigious bank, ‘Der Alte Kaiser Bank’ at a good kick-off salary. He started putting part of his earnings into a savings account and by scrimping and scraping, eating in cheap Viennese hamburger joints, and never taking girls to the pictures, after a couple of years he had squirreled enough away to put a deposit on a clapped out 1971 Karmann Ghia convertible. Not quite a Porsche but all the same a very pleasant car to drive on a summer’s day with the top down; ‘Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald’ on the radio, and the snow topped Tyrolean Mountains in the background. The car was not terribly fast which suited Matthias just fine, but surprisingly, it polished up with a quality shine and it was reliable. Now that Matthias had the convertible he felt he really needed a trophy girl friend to match the upholstery and so his eye fell on Mariandl who lived just 2 doors away and was an attractive, vivacious blond Viennese girl a year or so his junior. She was easily persuaded to come for a drive and a picnic in the Vienna Woods but not so easily prevailed upon, to allow Matthias to get beyond holding hands when they went for a stroll after the picnic. After-all the Karmann Ghia was just a tarted up Volkswagen and Mariandl was

only too well aware of that particular limitation. What was more she told him so. ‘Matthias,’ she said, ’you are a nice boy but this car is not quite what I had in mind for my future. If you have serious intentions you will have to do better than this, and if you have not, I would like you to know that I am respectable girl. No hanky panky without the ring.’ Matthias, who had seen Fellini’s ‘La dolce vita’ at least twice and had been hoping for the sort of response Anita Eckberg might have come up with, could not contain his disappointment. Some sharp words were exchanged between the ’would be’ lovers and they did not go out again.

Then there was a change for Matthias; he was promoted into the bank’s newly set up foreign exchange department where his computer skills, acquired during night classes, were greatly appreciated, and with this appreciation came a substantial raise. It allowed him to pay off the car which lessened the drain on his finances. Matthias calculated though that despite the increase even a second hand Porsche would still be unattainable for many years. It was then that he turned his mind to fraud. He set up what the trade called a Salami fraud, where he rounded down all deposits that passed through his computer and transferred the tiny slices that were left over into his own account. As the bank’s new department grew so did Matthias’s account. Soon after he had enough in this little side line account to put a deposit on a Porsche Carrera, not just on a second hand

Carrera, but on a brand new cabriolet. This was for Matthias the ultimate life experience: A beautiful car, open top motoring, a steady income from his fraud scheme, plenty of girls prepared to sit on the bonnet for a photo opportunity, and above all envy from Mariandl. It never once crossed his mind that he was now a thief and a forger. However it did cross the minds of the auditors of the foreign exchange department when they saw him pull up in the employees’ car park in his brand new Porsche. They instigated an investigation, which uncovered his fraud after a lengthy search and testing period. Matthias was arrested, and brought before a judge who showed him no mercy. He was jailed for 2 years and had to give back the Porsche. When he came out: he had no job, no income, and no prospects. Matthias spent days, then weeks in trying to find job till he finally landed a temporary position with a cleaning company which had the maintenance contract at the Nürnburgring. Here Matthias was given the task of driving the street sweeper that was used to give the track a final sweep before the start of a race. With the cheering crowd in the stands, and at the wheel of the leisurely paced sweeping machine, he reflected upon his life and past mistakes, 2 years jail and a lost Porsche, and compared it with the life of his hero Niki Lauda: one terrible formula one crash, severe disfigurement, several heart stopping near misses, two failed Airline Companies, and one air disaster. Matthias knew then who had had the better deal. He came to be at peace within himself and content with the way things had turned out. So in a strange way Matthias did attain his boyhood dream of driving at the Ring in front of a crowd. It has to be admitted though, that although the sweeper was an impressive piece of machinery it had not been built by Herrdoctor Ferdinand Porsche. But then what is life but an unfulfilled dream.

Keep it Original! Location, location location, that’s the catch cry when it comes to property. With classic cars it’s original, original original if you want to retain the value of your car or buy a potential motoring investment. With the market bottoming out now is a great time to by your classic Porsche. If you buy right it can offer years of enjoyment and give you a good return when it’s time to sell. An original car by definition is - “as it left the factory floor”. It goes without saying that chassis and drive train numbers are the most important items to have as original. The most common areas owners tend to change on their vehicles are wheels, stereos, steering wheels and exhausts. There is nothing worse than seeing post 90’s wheels on a pre 90’s car. It’s like mutton dressed up as lamb or putting vinyl weather boards on your Edwardian house – just because its modern doesn’t make it right! That also goes for aftermarket steering wheels matching the cars paint colour. If you want to be a decorator stick to painting your house!

Cayenne technicolour yawn interior more valuable in the future. Do you remember back in the 80’s when every back yard mechanic was tacking a can opener to the bumble beetle to make a quick buck. Convertible beetles were all the rage, every hairdresser had to have one and a factory convertible was out of reach. Fast forward 30 years and there a very few Beetles left for the current youth to restore. Sure you could restore a backdated 911 back to original but the cost would probably be prohibitive. I’m of the opinion that we are just custodians of these fine cars so unless you plan on being buried in it, it will one day be up for sale.

“Art” or huge mistake? SC to weirdo retro 993 Threre is nothing wrong with buying a non Australian delivered car. After all the cars were not built here. Just because it was not imported buy the official importer does not mean it is not a good car. As usual a pre purchase inspection is a must.

I don’t like losing money on cars and who does? Sure you can’t include the cost of regular maintenance but there is no reason that you should not at worst go close to getting your money back on an air cooled Porsche (sorry post 97 water cooled owners). Stick to some basic principles when buying Porsches and always keep selling in mind when buying in case you ever need to unload it in a hurry. 1. Manual hardtops are more sort after. Cab and tip options cost more at purchase but are worth less when its time to sell – go figure!

Lambo doors on a 944 :-( If you do want to change these items make sure you keep the original equipment and refit them when it’s time to sell. Currently on my car I have race seats, steering wheel and a spare set of 16inch Fuchs because I did not want to damage the original wheels on the track which were in immaculate condition. Sure the extra Fuchs cost 2.4k but I know I will get my money back as I have in the past because of their rarity. The car will one day be returned to its original glory when it comes time to sell and the seats and wheels will be in immaculate condition for the new owner. One of the most common items to disappear are car stereos and they are probably the item which will date the most and look out of place. Having a stereo with bright blue flashing LED’s looks plain wrong in a 70’s or 80’s classic. If the original equipment fails, keep it in a box and sell it with the car so the potential new owner can get it fixed if he wants. Finding used original stereos is near impossible as they are generally thrown out after they fail. Back and forward dated cars. To some degree I get why people back date cars. They justify the expense by arguing that you get the classic pre 74 look with modern reliable mechanicals in a galvanised shell. To me they are destroying 964’s, 3.2 Carreras and SC’s which will become 54

2. Buy the best example you can afford. Its false economy to buy a cheap car. You will only spend time and money on it which you will not get back at sale. 3. Buy original examples. Sourcing original parts to get it back to its natural state can be timely and expensive. 4. If you are going to buy a race car get a factory model where all the work has been done for you. You won’t waste money on parts that will actually devalue your car when its time to sell. Eg. GT3, 968CS, 993 or 964 RS, 911 CS. If you cant afford that buy a club car that someone else has built. You can bet they are selling way under what it owes them.

captain, Steve Page and Kirsty in their wide body 964 cab. We set off on the first stage of our run to Wallan for morning tea with Ken and Harriot in the lead. Ken was keen to test his Targa’s new suspension out! [Harriot was to later surprisingly report that it was not as comfortable as their Cayman.]

After various planning hiccups, time was running out, it was decided to rerun an old Boxster run. Many thanks go to Mick Jagger for having a sore throat and cancelling the Stones concert at Hanging Rock, as the roads could have been a tad congested. It was a bright clear Sunday morning when 14 very shiny cars met outside Porsche Melbourne, the traditional starting post of all great runs. After a brief meeting we welcomed one new member, Steven Champion in his 81 SC. We also reacquainted ourselves with past Mid 911

Meanwhile Ken and Barbara were all smiles in their newly acquired 993 4S. Malcolm and Lynnette Buley joined onto the convoy in Warrandyte . All was going well until we started to bunch up at an intersection, no doubt due to the sign having been thoughtfully rearranged to point in the wrong direction. After this inconvenience all was well on some tight and twisty roads as we made our way past the Yan Yean Reservoir [Some commented ‘too tight’ were we on the right road?] to the Wallan Wine Hub, where we were enthusiastically made welcome by Brian and Pam with their cake and coffees. Our last run had morning tea at a brewery, so this time it had to be a wine shop. We are very sociable in the Mid 911 Register! After much chatter it was back on the road again. Some suspensions working overtime due to the enormous Vanilla Slices scored by the quicker of the entrants. Through Romsey, Lancefield then past Hanging Rock and onto Clarkefield for a hearty country lunch at The Coach & Horses Inn. A two-storey

bluestone structure built in 1857, once serving as the first stop outside Melbourne on the way to the goldfields. It’s hard to fathom what used to take all day we now do the journey in minutes. We were lucky to have our own private parking on the grass at the rear, outside the original stables. A great photo opportunity. The meals were extremely late so the lucky draw was made prior to lunch to distract from the hunger pains. [No doubt the locals were well fed in the front bar.] The first prize was a bottle of red with a custom made Mid 911 and PCV logo label from Wallan Wine Hub was won by Malcolm Buley. Then Lois Saber drew her own name from the hat to win a custom labelled white wine for herself. When the meals arrived, they were huge. Smiles all around - a great day was had by all.

Run to Glen Erin Winery Lancefield Boxster / Cayman Register Sunday 30th November

The last day of spring 2014 dawned over a superb and sunny day for the Boxster/Cayman run of 174 kms to the Glen Erin winery – a good destination. With 24 cars on the Run, so keen were the attendees that a splinter group sprung away early allowing three groups to depart at staggered times to give the staff and the sole espresso machine at the “Flying Tart Café” a chance to keep the coffee flowing as cars arrived. The ever resourceful event management team of Wayne & Lindsay St Baker quickly re-shuffled and got us off to a smooth start. No tarts were seen either flying or otherwise but management provided varied and tasty trays of sweetmeats which were consumed with either tea or coffee as requested. As we then got off the beaten track some steep and challenging single lane roads were met and dealt with accordingly. You really gotta love the incomparable road feel of a Porsche under any conditions. The second leg thru Pyalong and Broadford determined its rural stamp when the Porsche contingent were led for some time by a careful horse float commander who was definitely not going to bruise or alarm his/her neddy with violent over 30km/ph movements. Two horses leading about 2000 so to speak. Horse float and cyclists worked cunningly together to enable us to enjoy some interesting geology and scenery such as the Murchison Gap and rural Victoria at its best. This was truly beautiful and interesting countryside. Lunch at the Glen Erin Winery Lancefield was Beef and Duck followed by a good dessert. No complaints there even from a good natured Garry Saber (red Cayman), who copped a shower of cold drinks down the left flank from a goofy footed waiter. All in all this was an excellent day out with absolutely full credit and thanks to Lindsay & Wayne St Baker for all their painstaking preparations and execution. 58

At the briefing, new members were advised to follow their notes even if they were following experienced navigators in cars ahead, just in case they made a mistake. Now, most would say that Lindsay is considered a good navigator and Wayne asked at lunch how many would follow her even if they thought that she had made a wrong turn, with most raising their hand, but, however to much surprise of Wayne she did make an error, but the cars behind halted, waited and then ignored the wrong turn and headed in the right direction with the Blue Boxster continuing in the wrong direction taking a good 5 km to discover the error to finally arrive near last at the winery. Wayne & Lindsay were so impressed with the navigation skills of Teresa and the confidence in her skills shown by Warwick, that they were awarded a special prize. So I wonder if Lindsay would consider running a ladies only navigation course? Only joking. Big welcome to New Members George Bloomfield, Andrew Dove, Tony Scanlon, Bill & Maree Toohey, David & Alison Worland.

Mt Macedon Blast Turbo & Modern 911 Registers Sunday 19 October

On a beautiful Melbourne spring morning – the type that we don’t tell interstaters about, because they wouldn’t believe us – a fine group of twelve cars gathered at McDonald’s in Mulgrave, ready for an exciting run up and over the tricky Reefton Spur, down through Marysville and finishing with lunch at the Black Spur Inn. It was a fairly even mix between the Registers. After a fortifying coffee and McMuffin, Brent Howard undertook his inaugural duties as CoCaptain of the Turbo Register with aplomb. Along with explaining the route and plan for the day, he welcomed three new members. Gregory and Geraldine Caddle in their (much remarked upon) Macadamia coloured 997 Turbo Cab; Jeff and Barbara Cressall in their Rhodium Silver 997 Carrera 4S and Peter Savage and his nephew William in their awesome Black 997 Turbo S. Greg Caddle showed no shyness on his first run, taking the lead in the first part of the run up to

Warburton. As his navigator Geraldine capably followed the very accurate and informative trip notes to get us to the Warburton Bakery, steering us smoothly through those tricky GembrookBelgrave roundabouts. Spring was well and truly on display with the run taking us past green fields, rhododendrons on showy display, fast running creeks and the Yarra Ranges soaring majestically above the settlements nestled in their shadow. The popular Bakery was hosting a few groups out enjoying a run through the area on a beautiful spring day, but still managed to furnish quite a few Porsche members with some of their signature baked goods and very good coffee. After a thirty minute stop the group tackled the Reefton Spur in several groups. The presence of other vehicles out on sunny Sunday drives required the leaders Stephen Fisher in his Boxster S and Garry and Lois Saber in their Cayman S to act as “safety cars” and slow the lead group down so there was enough distance between the

cars so that everyone could have the opportunity to take advantage of their vehicle’s capability on the twisting Wood Point Road. Whilst the run down into Marysville still bears the signs of the devastation of the bushfires, it was wonderful to see that Marysville is well in recovery mode and blooming; lots of completed buildings and new constructions, people wandering around, gardens starting to blossom. From there it was a good run into Narbethong and a well-earned lunch at the Black Spur Inn. The historic inn is in located in a beautiful forest setting and has ample parking for displaying our beloved Porsches. We were greeted warmly by the very friendly staff and treated to an excellent two course lunch which was a fitting end to a great run.

Porsches at Hanging Rock Torque Tube Register Sunday 9th November

From humble beginnings on the north side of Melbourne, sixteen Porsches gather at the once abandoned air strip in Essendon to gather their packs and strappings for the long and arduous journey that awaits them towards the famous and mysterious “Hanging Rock”. With great trepidation and lots of coffee from laManna’s Café and Bakery, we start our journey north east towards the back marshes of Sunbury. It was a trail well-travelled for buggy and Porsche alike, we head through the twists and turns of wildwood towards Romsey taking in a few of the local sites such as the low flying jumbo that buzzed over us as we passed the back of the airport and took some by surprise, and then the local CFA were performing drills with their tanker trucks that almost took up the entire road. Fortunately they moved over for us as we zipped passed, then a single lane bridge proved a challenge as we all braked and bunched to get across without incident. All this made for quite an interesting morning as we headed up through Lancefield before turning inward through some beautiful Tuscan style countryside arriving at Hanging Rock safely. Once parked, we took lots of photos fearful that some of us would not return from the mysterious Hanging rock. Fortunately for us, there were no private school girls on our trip but we were still very fearful of our cars going missing after a group of Harley riders rumbled in shortly thereafter and parked across from us. 60

With a few of us energetic ones venturing to climb the rock, I discovered the Hortons a top the rock 1st with Nigel Watson getting a view of the race horse track before coming back down. The rest of the troupe enjoyed the sunshine and a latte in the café at the visitor centre whilst waiting to see who might not return. The mysterious rock did however claim a victim with Wayne and Tilly Williamson having car trouble. I knew there was some magnetic force field that wanted to keep people at the rock. We heard later that they escaped with their lives fortunately! Off and over the Macedon ranges to finish our journey in the lovely Macedon township and the “Olive Jones“ restaurant with its Sunday vibe of live music and arty décor.

We’d like to personally thank all the attendees for making our last run in 2014 a very memorable one for the Torque Tube Register. See you again in 2015.
