Photography I recently stumbled upon a piece of wisdom:
Spend time with your parents and treat them well, because one day, when you look up from your phone, they won’t be there anymore. I feel that this is applicable to everyone, even to us as parents who are often busy on our phones, while our children and spouses long for a bit of personal attention. Now is the time, more than ever, to become attentive regarding the people around you. Switch off the phone and spend more time with your loved ones. It was a privilege to be welcomed to the home of Kobus and Stefanie. Kobus passionately shared how they planned the design of their home, built and completed the project. This passion is reflected by the feeling of love for people that one is greeted with as the front door opens to the Venter family’s home. Pieter and Mariëtte from Gabbata Lodge are known in the community as caring people and their commitment to always helping others is a blessing to their businesses. I was touched by the article from Prof. Buys about the gripping drought and the below average rainfall that we have received. I cannot help but think about the effect it has on the poor animals and plants. We thank our Father for every raindrop that He sends. It is also back-to-school time for all the kids. For some of the little ones it will be their first and for others their last year in primary school, while many children are finishing their school careers. May you all have a blessed year and be happy with the choices that you make this year. All the best to the great teachers and principals of Poort Laerskool, Curro Roodeplaat, Kameelfontein Laerskool and the surrounding schools, as well as the nursery schools. I hope that you may also learn a thing or two from the advice given by our writer, Isebell, and how you can help left-handed children in the school. I know that I will benefit from reading the article, and that the teachers and learners will be able to support each other by taking the fact that there are left-handed children in the classroom into consideration. 2015 had many challenges and some disappointments, but was also a year of numerous highlights. May 2016 be the best year for our readers. May we all make time for our loved ones, and may every business man and woman be blessed. May you all be blessed and experience an abundance of grace and favour this year!

WORLD-CLASS GOLF AT THE
RoodeLife
Cup
The Second Annual RoodeLife Cup was hosted at Pebble Rock Golf Club on Saturday, 21 November. The tournament once again fielded 80 players divided into 5 teams, competing for the prestigious trophy and the honour accompanying it. With some scores to settle after the previous encounter, the bantering between the teams gained momentum in the week preceding the tournament, with the Captain of the Town Team, Gavin Smit, predicting an overwhelming win for his team and prematurely sending consolation prizes to the opposing teams. Considering the strength of all competing teams, he surely was at risk of swallowing his words…and his pride. The Eersterust Team is known for the quality of their putting and, regardless of their handicaps, seems to have the edge on the greens. It is rumoured that Eersterust must surely have some secret putting practice facility! Sable Hills always presents a strong and wellbalanced team, as do Pebble Rock, with both teams consisting of very skilled and passionate players. They are mainly represented by golfers living within the respective estates. The exception to this rule is the Rebel Team because they are, well, Rebels, and consist of players from all regions. Each team consists of eight pairs and scoring is done on the Betterball Stableford points system. The format of the tournament promotes participation by golfers of all skill levels, and ensures that everyone will contribute to the performance of the team. It also promotes the game of golf amongst the ladies, whom do not often get the opportunity to compete in events of this nature. Although the ladies only represented 10% of the participants, their numbers will surely increase in future, highlighting the fact that golf is truly a family sport , and that the ancient adopted acronym “GOLF” – Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden – has become obsolete, and deservedly so.
The day kicked off with an early start after a quick cup of coffee, with everyone in good spirits, albeit with the tension and excitement tangible in the air. RoodeLife was present at the practice green to wish all an enjoyable and good round of golf, also inviting all players to enter the lucky draws that would take place at the prizegiving. The early tee-off ensured that all finished their games in time for any other obligations they might have had, and for others, to enjoy the rest of the day with their fellow golfers. But first, it was time to announce the RoodeLife Cup Champions for 2015, as well as handing out the other prizes to be won. Dirk Kruger and Andre Hanekom won great prizes for nearest to the pin and longest drive respectively, with Antony dos Santos showing his all-round ability by winning one of each! The Rebels Team, for the second consecutive year, was awarded the RoodeLife Cup, with the Town Team in a close second place. Fittingly, the captain of the Rebels, Derick Grobbelaar, returned the consolation prize to Gavin. With only twelve points separating the two teams at an average of only 1.5 points per Betterball pairing, it truly was anyone’s trophy to win and the fact that the Sable Hills Team ended fourth – only 17 points behind the Rebels, once again confirms just how fierce the competition really was. The tactic employed by the Rebels to pair a low and high handicapper together proved successful again, although many a man complained that they were distracted by the presence of the beautiful ladies in the Rebels Team! After the prize-giving, the players had a sociable time, enjoying the hotdogs supplied by the club, and having drinks with their fellow golfers. Some say that laughter could be heard from the clubhouse “stoep” until very late that Saturday afternoon. This tournament has, once again, exhibited and confirmed the greatness of the game of golf, the goodspirited competitiveness it awakens, and the enjoyment and unity that it creates amongst families and communities alike.
We thank RoodeLife for making this possible by hosting this tournament. May it grow from strength to strength!

What’s wrong
with the weather? You may wonder why it is so hot and dry this year. We had three successive heat waves in October and November, with maximum temperatures of up to 39 o C.
From mid-September to mid-November there was less than 20% of the average rainfall for this period. It is not just our area that is affected; six of the country’s nine provinces have already been declared drought disaster areas.
The question is why? According to meteorologists, there are three factors that play a role: normal climatic variation, the El Niño phenomenon and global warming. Regular annual climate variations are natural phenomena. This means that from time to time, we experience years that are unusually wet and cool, and at other times very dry and warm. This is caused by oscillations and complex configurations of global and regional climate systems. The chart of rainfall statistics for the Roodeplaat Dam area, as measured at Sable Hills Waterfront Estate, shows these yearly fluctuations. The second factor is the El Niño / La Niña phenomenon. El Niño is Spanish for “The Little Boy”, or “Christ Child” and La Niña is “The Little Girl”. El Niño episodes represent periods of above-average sea surface temperatures across the east-central Equatorial Pacific, whereas La Niña episodes represent periods of below-average sea surface temperatures. There is a connection between El Niño / La Niña events and changes in global atmospheric circulation patterns, and consequently rainfall and temperature in specific areas. El Niño / La Niña only represent the changes in the Pacific Ocean, whereas the associated changes in the atmosphere are known as the Southern Oscillation.

The third factor is climate change as a result of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily carbon dioxide. The mean annual temperatures in South Africa have increased by almost 1°C over the past five decades. Generally, the climate impacts of global warming are increasing climate variability (e.g. floods, droughts and heat waves), and extreme weather events like hail storms, gale force winds and so on. In the long term, climate change could pose a significant threat to South Africa’s water resources, food security, health, infrastructure, ecosystems and biodiversity.
What can be done to cope with more extreme weather and changes to climate?

Article by / Professor Andre Buys 06
In south-eastern Africa, El Niño is usually associated with below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures during the summer period. The Southern Oscillation explains approximately 30% of the rainfall variability, which means that other factors should also be taken into account. For example: the 2009-2010 El Niño did not result in below-normal rainfall in our area (see rainfall statistics chart). Of concern is that the 2015 El Niño event is one of the strongest ever observed and could affect both the 2015 and 2016 rainfall seasons.
One response could be to build more suitable housing and planting drought resistant crops. The 2015 United Nations Conference of the Parties, COP21, held in Paris, France in November and December 2015, was aimed at achieving a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C. Even if you are not a world leader, everybody can do their part to help conserve water.

MIKE BOLHUIS TALKS ABOUT...
Scams A general perception exists that only middleclass and poorer people are scammed, but the opposite is true. Sophisticated economical scams target upper middle-class and affluent people for large amounts of money. Other scams, aimed at identity theft and stealing, simply involve random calling in the hope that one person will respond and normally they do get their victim.
REASONS People are caught up in scams :
Ambition not being content with what they have and wanting more quickly.
Debt want to get rid of their debt quickly.
Loneliness long for love, acceptance and companionship.
Ignorance scammed with a phishing email luring them to log into a bank account.
How to avoid falling victim to investment scams Decisions are based on facts, probability or rumours. First analyse the information that you receive. Is it based on hearsay alone, such as a friend telling you about an amazing deal? What is the probability of the information being true and finally, can you verify the facts? If the information that you receive is simply based on a recommendation, take the necessary precautionary steps to verify the validity of such. It can only be called an informed decision when it is based on facts. If not – decline the opportunity.
WHAT TO DO:
Never respond to any email or SMS stating that you have won a lottery ticket/ competition or will receive money back from an institution. Report the email scams to the bank, where relevant, and to the SA Cybercrime unit.
The success rate for prosecution of such scams is low, because of the difficulty in proving that theft took place, as the victim was not forced into the investment and willingly handed over money. Large syndicates have recruits who look in dustbins for any documentation that reveals contact details and information that they can use. They also send out random emails and text messages to numbers and wait for someone to take the bait.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Some of the scams making the rounds: Holiday homes You pay a deposit upfront for the booking and when you arrive, you find that the home is occupied and not available for holiday rental at all.
Home rentals Confirm Identity You have the right to verify the identity of any person approaching you for your personal details. Get their details, including title and employee number, and then contact the institution that they claim to work for to confirm the information. Beware of brokers, because they get their commission early on in the transactions without any concern for your wellbeing. Also note that scams increase in the last quarter of the year, because people want to make money quickly and criminals also have targets to meet.

The house is advertised at a ridiculously low price, but the advertiser who claims to be the owner requires a deposit to secure the home for you, because many people have shown interest. You pay the deposit and the advertiser disappears.
Internet dating Here, the person builds an online relationship with you and eventually wants to come and visit in South Africa, or needs money for an investment.
Confirm Your Account Calls You receive a call to confirm your details regarding a particular account and while you are on the phone, the criminals hack into your bank account and transfer the money to an offshore account.
Investment Opportunities Amazing investment opportunity in a mine somewhere in an African country. They produce photos, have a website, social media page and financial statements. Once you make the investment and decide to travel to the mine, you find that it doesn’t exist.
ACCOUNT SUSPENSION Your account has been suspended, normally a bank account – once you call or click on the email link, you are redirected to a mirror site or fake call centre where your details are collected. While you are still busy confirming your details, they hack into your bank account and change the password, lock you out and then transfer money out of your account.
DISCOUNT OFFERS Guaranteed discount if you settle your overdue account now. The message is done via SMS or you have to call a specific number. You hand over details and they are able to hack your account.

BREAKFAST MEETING
The ladies from the Roodeplaat community once again realised how important it is to make time for each other – to enjoy the company of good friends, without being accompanied by husbands and children. The Annual Roodeplaat Women’s Breakfast Meeting took place on the 23rd of October 2015 at the Pebble Rock Golf Estate Clubhouse. Gerald and his personnel provided superb service and the exceptionally talented Pieter Albert Jordaan provided entertainment, while Alet Jansen van Vuuren treated us to exquisite food. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Lizhel Schutte for taking the initiative to make this an annual appointment for all the ladies who stay in the Roodeplaat Dam region. We have exciting plans for next year and hope that more and more ladies will join us in future!

Going the
extra mile leads to success...
14
Victory doesn’t come overnight.
It takes dedication and there is always a story behind the success of a business.
In the case of the well-known Roodeplaat Gabbata Lodge, we visited with Pieter and Mariëtte Terblanche to learn more about the characteristics of triumphant entrepreneurs. The name Gabbata comes from John 19:13, with the Hebrew meaning of “stone patio, wall or edge” and upon visiting the lodge, it immediately becomes apparent just how relevant the name is. The couple originally bought the lodge for their daughter through a telephonic auction four years ago, without knowing the state of neglect that they would find upon visiting their new property. At first they wanted to return Gabbata to the seller, but they managed to put the lodge on the map through hard work and their commitment to transforming the place into a world-class restaurant and reserve. Mariëtte says they realised that it would take hard work, but knew that once they committed to a decision, they would see it through. Managing a lodge means doing so daily and the couple follows a hands-on approach. Mariëtte is at the lodge during the day and some evenings, while Pieter manages their other very successful business, Saturn. He also manages the lodge during the evenings and weekends. Their two children, Jacques and Chereen, are involved at Saturn, although Chereen sometimes helps out at the lodge and according to her parents, she is an exceptional planner and organiser. It is all about team work as Mariëtte explains: “We manage the lodge together with our manager, Delarey. He is a true blessing, but it is a team effort with dedicated chefs, housekeeping staff, service personnel and ground keepers. Everyone works together to make the lodge a place where people want to come. The lodge also features a stunning boma that was once in a derelict state, but with love and care the couple turned it into the perfect outdoor function venue. When it comes to the boot camps that are hosted without charge at Gabbata, Pieter answers: “We like to give without expecting something in return.”
Owning a lodge changed their lifestyle considerably and for Pieter, it means having less time to enjoy deep-sea fishing, while the couple also has to work during the festive season. In the interest of keeping a balanced lifestyle, they take a break from Gabbata every few weeks and visit other lodges, travel to the West Coast and visit European countries or relax at their home at Bronkhorst Bay. They don’t see their visits to other lodges and restaurants as supporting their competitors. If anything, they learn from others and take the time to understand what it feels like being the patron, which helps them to improve their services. Their success cannot be traced back to a single day or action. Instead, it is a combination of factors and their attitude towards life, as is evident in their words: “If you really want to do something, don’t be afraid. Take a chance, but make sure it is a calculated risk and realise that it will take hard work and commitment.” Pieter is the kind of person that repairs and improves a tourist train without expecting anything in return. He loves to keep busy and enjoys visiting with friends, spending time fishing or boating, and Mariëtte takes to creative tasks in her spare time. Her beautiful paintings can be seen throughout the lodge, while she also offers classes. They met as students and have been married for over 39 years. Yet, the couple, both teachers for many years with no formal background in tourism and hospitality, managed to turn Gabbata Lodge into a reputable and popular venue. The couple’s answers about success, failure, principles to live by and owning a lodge provide for valuable insight regarding the factors contributing to their success.
15
Biggest challenge in running a lodge? To turn guests into clients and retain their business.
Worst thing that has happened since your involvement in Gabbata? A huge bushfire threatened the existence of Gabbata…It came right up to the fence and at that stage we didn’t have a water car and weren’t as prepared as we are today. The fire was as high as the trees, but it was stopped by grace and the people who helped to fight it.
Best thing that has happened to you since opening the lodge? Getting to know the people from the community and having been able to turn many challenges into positive victories.
What is your definition of success? To be successful isn’t the end-result, you need to continually work on your success and to lose isn’t final, but to endure is what is important. Success is the sum total of various inputs which are continuously repeated.
What habits do you believe contributes to success? Hard work, being able to learn from your mistakes, willingness to learn from others, attention to detail, commitment to always improve, being goal-oriented and dedication…you need to be positive, follow a hands-on approach, motivate your personnel, keep a sense of humour and endure. When you have a problem with a person, address it immediately and then move on. If you have to discipline a person, start with a positive statement about them, showing that you appreciate them, as it will motivate them rather than lead to a defensive attitude.
Who has been your biggest inspiration? Honest, successful and friendly people. 16
How would you describe yourselves? Self-motivated, hardworking, disciplined, people-people, caring, loving, passionate and creative.
How do others see you? Hardworking, friendly and creative.
Life lessons learned? Don’t take the people in your life for granted, especially not your loved ones. Whatever you do, commit and do it with passion. Learn from others, be attentive and don’t judge people on their appearance…it is important to be sincere, thankful and to believe in yourself.
Life principles? We live according to the principles of being positive, even if you don’t feel like it, to be forgiving, to change your attitude when needed and to choose happiness, because it is a choice. We see problems as challenges and believe it is essential to always do your best and you will see the results…Gratefulness, friendliness and a positive attitude will help you achieve more than money can do for you.
Dislikes? People who don’t want others to be successful or happy, places that are neglected and unethical management of businesses.
Your best achievement?
Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time? Not in an old age home.
Outlook on the Roodeplaat region? We love the beautiful natural surroundings and being able to live so close to the city, but feeling as if we are in the bushveld. The potential water shortage is a concern and we would like to see the community work together in making the region a better place for all…Sable Hills Waterfront Estate offers a lovely environment, similar to Gabbata, and we appreciate the security, natural setting and people in the community.
We are thankful for having successful businesses.
New Year’s resolutions?
Your passion in life?
We would like to travel more, learn new skills, make the time to apply the skills and we want to spend more time with the people we love and care about.
Owning a lodge means having to work with people and as a team. We are passionate about people.
How do you deal with failure? Nobody is perfect. Everyone experiences some level of weakness or failure. If we don’t succeed in a particular situation, we analyse the situation to identify the root problem and avoid making the same mistake in future.
Message to the readers for the New Year? May you be blessed with good health, care about your fellow man, appreciate every morning, be grateful for the person you are and don’t forget where you come from.
They don’t stop dreaming and although it may seem as if they have accomplished everything in life, they still want to improve. Mariëtte hasn’t yet had time to complete her bucket list item of visiting Eastern Europe and they still have to experience a hot-air balloon trip, but with their dedication, readers can rest assured that the couple will work towards accomplishing their goals.

INSPIRATIONAL LIVING
The home of the Venter family located in Sable Hills Waterfront Estate is the epitome of African country warmth and hospitality.
T
huys Maritz of Karamen Projects completed the dream home of Kobus and Stefanie Venter. The couple grew up in the countryside and they set out to create a similar tranquil environment for their two daughters, Rosanne (17) and Maghritt (14). They moved to Sable Hills Waterfront Estate in 2009 after being residents in Montana Park for 15 years to make their dream a reality. Determined to find the perfect stand, they at first rented in Sable Hills and eventually fell in love with one of the stands offering a panoramic view of the majestic Roodeplaat Dam. Featuring five spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, designed to maximise the benefits of natural light and space usage, the house has become a true safe haven for the Venter family. Architect Braam de Villiers from Earthworld, skilfully planned for large sliding doors, allowing for a slight breeze throughout the home during the late afternoons to counter the warm afternoon sun setting in the west. Although the couple relied on the expertise of Braam, they didn’t stand on the sidelines. Kobus played an integral role in the design of the home and garden, with thorough planning and creative input. “Magnificent” describes the double volume entrance hall with its larger-than-life wooden doors and French style lighting leading to the open plan living area. The kitchen facilitates team cooking and social interaction, with the dining room and veranda adjacently placed. With a simplistic and practical, classical style repeated throughout the kitchen and the pantry, one cannot help but fall in love with the combination of wood and painted features. Complementary to the classical French-African style, the home also features a charming herb garden. Fresh grapes are harvested from the grapevine, which is lovingly referred to as the “pride and joy” of the entire family, in addition to the fig trees and the wellmanicured vegetable garden.

S
tefanie describes their way of living as
“We love being together … these are the special times and worth remembering… and that’s why we planned the house to ensure that everyone feels welcome.” Particularly enjoying candlelight dinners and beautiful music, the family, along with friends, often gather around the long stylishly set tables for memorable get-togethers. Cool winter nights are transformed into cosy evenings through slow burning fires in the fireplaces. It is not unusual to hear classical music being played as Rosanne and Maghritt often play the piano and harp to the delight of their parents. Stefanie and Kobus usually enjoy their afternoon tea on the veranda that offers an unspoiled view of the beautiful sunsets so characteristic of the Roodeplaat region, while the Boma, named the “Boskring” (Circle in the Bush,) is the ideal retreat space where one can escape reality for a while. An indoor garden featuring roses, seasonal plants and a swimming pool, as well as the billiards table are the socialising hubs for the two teenage daughters and their friends. A neutral colour scheme with sparingly dispersed red spatter throughout the house complements the stonework, forming an integral part of the exterior. The Venter couple was initially unaware of the fact that a large part of the stand consists of red sandstone, which explains why the region is called Roodeplaat. To overcome the rock bedding problem during the initial construction phase, they called in the blasting experts who managed to blast the rock without damage to the surrounding homes. Seeing the beauty of the rocks, they used some of the unique rock pieces in the foundation and walls. Stefanie explains the beautiful fabrics in the home: “I love cloths and am truly indebted to my friend Adel van der Merwe, who shared her textiles with me.” The integration of African-country with classical European elements is what makes this house a one of a kind home where visitors immediately feel welcome. Stefanie concludes: “We are grateful for the privilege of being able to live in the bush and natural surrounds, while being near the city.” Article by / Isebell Gauché

the Kia
Today, marketing strategies cannot afford to exclude an online campaign, regardless of how well known the brand already is… According to Kia Motors, the name “Kia” means “arise/come up out of Asia” or “rising out of Asia”. Looking at the amount of Kias driving around on our South African roads today, the name seems very fitting. The same can be said of their online marketing campaigns. In June 2015, two of Kia’s branches, Hatfield and Silver Lakes, signed up with iLead Online. Two months later, their Stellenbosch branch joined to also become part of the strategic online marketing campaign that we had put together.
The goals of the campaigns for the three branches were simple: Attract more visitors to the individual websites. Increase the number of quote requests. Get more bookings for test drives of the latest models.
Since we started the campaigns, the aptly named traffic to the individual websites has more than doubled, meaning that we were able to not only meet, but to excel at the challenges that were put before us
Now if we can do it for Kia, imagine what we can do for your business.

During the past decade, a substantial amount of the pioneers in South Africa's asset management industry responded to their burning entrepreneurial flair by leaving the large, established investment houses in favour of managing money within a boutique setting. Hedging The Rand? The weak and depreciating Rand is on many South African investors’ minds. No doubt there is good reason to be concerned, as the Rand has lost 23.4% of its value since the beginning of 2015 (starting 2015 on R10.63/$ and currently trading at R14.27/$). In US Dollar terms, South Africans are becoming poorer, even if you were one of the lucky few who invested in the JSE-IND25 that has appreciated approximately 16% year to date. With the Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) set to increase rates in the near future, either in December 2015 or early 2016, the rand is set for further depreciation. In a recent article by Cees Bruggemans, called “Countdown, Ignition, Liftoff”, he highlighted another risk, namely the current drought that large parts of SA are experiencing, and said “Personally, I am a lot more worried about an interior drought impact lasting through 2016, as I think the Fed will probably only be a temporary suppressant in the lead-in to lift off, after which the gradualism of policy normalisation will take over. So more 2016 Rand pressure, good for R15-16/$.” Given the current situation, investors might be drawn to converting a portion of their liquid assets to hard currency. However, this is only half the answer. Firstly, cash will seldom, even in hard currency terms, provide inflation beating returns over the long run. Secondly, the Rand has proven to be volatile, which means that your timing may be imperfect. Currently, the Rand is trading at the top of its 1-standard deviation channel (with the channel starting from its low in 1999
Photo from www.selectproperty.com
of R6.00/$) proving the point that the perfect time to hedge the Rand may have passed. Converting to hard currency removes the currency risk, but does not guarantee adequate returns. Thus, this needs to be followed by a second step which focusses on suitable investments. This second step is critical to achieving long run real investment returns. Finding suitable investments is, generally speaking, not an easy task. In the current environment where the obvious offshore geographical regions, i.e. developed markets, are generally trading at expensive levels, the task is even more complicated. Thus, investors will have to include emerging markets as part of their asset allocation process. Although emerging markets are a less obvious choice from a risk perspective (from an asset and currency perspective), it is generally trading closer to fair value levels and may even provide pockets of value. In summary, don’t over react by focusing solely on exchange rate risks. If too much emphasis is placed on the short term and the current negative impact of the Rand, investors may be disappointed by subsequent returns. Rather hedge against currency risk by including it in a well thought-through offshore investment strategy with a long-term focus. HEALTH & WELLNESS
A PEEL IS NOT A BANANA
SKIN
Cleopatra bathed in milk and she was... well, Cleopatra! It is well known that this Egyptian beauty had immaculate skin. What is less known is that even today, almost 3 millennia later, aesthetical practitioners still use lactic acid, derived from milk, to assist women in their continuous search for the fountain of everlasting youth. If by now, you still haven’t heard of chemical peels or derma cosmeceuticals, chances are that your skin is unhealthy, damaged by the environment and showing signs of pigmentation, outbreaks, premature wrinkling, or excessive oiliness or dryness. The question you need to ask yourself is: “Why?” It is amazing how little attention people give to their biggest organ, namely the skin. Will you skip your blood pressure or diabetes pills? Why then skip your sunblock every morning?
Given the option of either buying cheap pills that merely lower the reading on the blood pressure machine or buying slightly more expensive pills that lower your pressure, but also reduce your risk for a heart attack, which will you choose? Budget for your skin products and regular professional treatments, and you will be rewarded with a flawless “Cleopatric” skin. While the Kardashians are taking it to the extreme with their vampire facials – don’t even ask – most will stick with a good daily skin routine at home with a professional in-salon treatment once a month. After Botox, chemical peels are now the second most popular aesthetical procedure worldwide. There is a wide variety of peels with various indications, after-effects and results, depending on your skin’s needs. Acne, pigmentation and wrinkles are easily improved with a series of peels and no, not all peels leave you red and peeling for two weeks.
Sometimes less is more and more superficial peels more frequently will give the same results in the end. The key to healthy skin starts with professional advice. The products you choose and the treatments you receive will make all the difference. Don’t skimp on your skin!

YOU JUST NEED TO
START
Keep your training interesting Try different routes, join friends over weekends or take your training gear with you on weekend getaways, because a change of scenery can be very inspiring. And if you don’t feel like training every day, you are not alone. Most people don’t get up with a feeling of joy when they think about training, but most people do feel energised and happier afterwards!
Hit “delete” on a bad day
South Africa has the perfect weather for training – you just need to start! Your options are endless and you can choose between a 30-minute walk, a 20-minute jog, or cycling a few blocks. You see, unless you are training for the Olympics, you don’t need hours of training every single day. You just need to start! That is how everybody begins a training programme. If you want to run a 10km race, you need to start by walking, combined with running, and work your way up from there. Normally, a 12-week programme can get you within reach of most fitness goals. Having a goal or challenge makes working out even more fun and exciting. Either work towards a personal goal or sign up for a race. If you don’t commit to someone or something, it is too easy to skip a workout or to do less than what you are supposed to. Also, don’t get despondent if you get tired after the first few steps, work towards your bigger goal. We all have to start somewhere!
If you feel drained, don’t force yourself to go out and do a hard session. Either give the session a complete miss or do less than specified by your programme. Stay focused on your bigger goal. If you are not self-motivated, either get a trainer or a training buddy. If you cannot afford a full-time trainer, ask a qualified trainer to write you a personalised training programme, which can be adjusted according to your personal growth and circumstances. Your fitness and progress can be measured throughout your programme.
What if I get sick or I miss a training session? Never go back, never try and make up missed sessions. When you are ready to start training again, just start where you last stopped. Don’t combine two sessions into one, because you will only overtrain and increase your chances of injury. If you missed a week, postpone your goal by a week and look for a different race on a future date. You are human, life happens, but don’t marinade in excuses. It is because of endless excuses that some people get it right and others don’t. Get up and get going as soon as possible.
I think people look at others training and competing, and they are of the opinion that “those people” never get sick, never get tired, and they just have it so easy. This is not true.
You’re Not Alone A very small percentage of people are born with natural sporting abilities. The majority of us must work very hard to achieve the most basic fitness goals. What I am trying to say is that you are not special and you are not unique, because we all suffer at certain stages of our training.

The waiting
Game
My friend Alex hoped and dreamt for a good decade or so, to go to Africa. Living amongst its people had a profound effect on his inner self. It brought life into perspective; everything became simple again.
- sasa hivi
In his own words... “I enjoyed the idea that although work started ‘in the morning’, it was open to interpretation. The notion of apologising for being late also doesn’t exist, because in East Africa everybody is one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wizards – they are neither early nor late, but arrive at precisely the time that they intend to. What also struck me was that people here don’t tire of waiting, nor do they get bored. Waiting was doing something. One day I had to take the bus to collect a package from the post office. I hoped it would be a short trip and to be back as soon as possible. There are always a dozen or so guys trying to get you into one of their buses, so finding one is never difficult, but I wanted the one that was going to leave the soonest. Of course, there’s no official timetable, so the bus, much like Gandalf, just leaves at the time that it intends to. I asked around and eventually one driver told me that he was leaving – ‘Sasa hivi’, right now! I jumped in. It was then that the wait began. After an hour, I asked him again, to which I got the same reply: ‘Sasa hivi!’ Trust me, waiting even ten minutes in a bus parked at the station can seem like an hour. The bus is like a sauna because it’s in the full sun, the engine is always idling, so there’s a cloud of exhaust fumes wafting through the windows and, of course, your shoulder is inevitably stuck into the sweaty armpit of the somewhat over-sized African Mama sitting next to you. Eventually we left – three hours later! But even then, we still stopped at the petrol station to fill up the tank and get a few snacks. So much for getting home early! At the end of the day, I was still alive. I still had my physical health and as for my mental health… well that was never really all that great anyway. I’ve realised that looking back at all the time I’ve ever spent waiting (probably years by now!), I can’t remember it annoying me for more than a day or two. After that, I’ve completely forgotten that I had to wait and there was no further impact on my inner peace. So why not start to enjoy waiting or at least not loathe it? Just wait because that is your job at that very moment and try to do the best job you possibly can. If millions of Africans can do it, then I’m pretty sure I can too! At a side bar, I eventually figured out that ‘sasa hivi’ can either mean ‘now’ or ‘soon’, and that the Swahili word for tomorrow, ‘kesho’, doesn’t in fact mean tomorrow, but instead means ‘not today’. It sheds some light on the African way of looking at time.
This story of Alex gave me a fresh understanding of Isaiah 40:31: “Those that wait upon the Lord…” May we all learn to wait patiently and purposefully on God in 2016.
Time, it would seem, seldom plays by the rules nor does it ever read the script, so I reckon it’d be best just to let it be and get on with life, not worrying too much about where the minutes, hours and days are lost or gained.” Article by / Muller Crauwcamp 34

HELP YOUR LEFT-HANDED CHILD TO
Write Better
overcome the challenges early on by teaching him/her to:
Your left-handed child will enjoy school just as much as a right-handed child, but when it comes to writing tasks during the foundation years, you may find that your child may struggle. Address the challenges through the correct methods for writing as a left-hander. Understand the Challenges While the right-hander writes with a pull action, the left-hander has to push. The end result is smudging as the hand follows the writing. The right-hander’s paper is usually vertically positioned or placed tilted slightly to the left. If the paper is in an upright position, the lefthanded child is unable to write comfortably and constantly has to push the pen. Copying of letters or pictures is often difficult for the left-hander, because the picture, letter or object is normally on the left side. The child covers the picture with the left arm when having to copy it on the right side and has to rely on memory instead of direct sight.
w
Helping your child to improve fluency, speed, accuracy and neatness will certainly assist in fostering a positive attitude towards learning.
Article by / Isebell GauchĂŠ
Position the paper 30-45 degrees to the right and place the paper to the left part of the body. Place an arrow at the bottom in the right corner as a guideline. When the paper is tilted correctly, the arrow will point to the left shoulder. It will help to create a slope and aid in writing smoothly. Hold the pen/pencil 2cm above the tip for better visibility and to improve the formation quality of the letters. Use the fingers for moving the pen/pencil instead of the entire arm. This will help to write comfortably and will increase writing speed. Use the right hand to hold the paper in place slightly under or above the writing line to reduce movement, which may lead to smudging, slower writing and general frustration. Write lighter by attaching a piece of paper to a wall. Let the child do a few writing exercises on the paper daily with a pencil. You can also have your child do all writing homework in this manner. Take three sheets of paper and place a piece of carbon paper between the two top ones. Let your child exercise to write light enough to prevent the letters from appearing on the bottom page. Do this daily until you notice the writing is consistently light. Encourage your child to hold the pen/pencil with the three-point grip, with the tool between the thumb, the index and middle fingers. The child should keep the left hand resting on the paper under the line. Improve copying quality by placing the picture or object on top or to the right of the space where copying must take place, in order to give your child the ability to visually see the object without having to lift the left hand or turn his/her head. Write letters in the same way as the right-hander with the exception of crossing lines. Write the O counter clockwise, but allow for pulling of the cross line from right to left with A, E,F, T, H, f, t and y, rather than pushing left to right. It will improve writing speed and fluency. 37

A pageant IN celebration of beauty. Giving honour to the beauty God has given to us.
Jeanna Bissett Jeanna Bissett is a 7-year-old Grade 1 learner at Curro Roodeplaat. She recently took part in the Little Miss Petite SA Pageant. It is one of the biggest pageants that South Africa offers, and although this was her first-ever pageant, she was crowned 2nd princess. She also won a photogenic competition earlier this year. In April 2015, Jeanna competed in the South African Championships of the Performing Arts, where she was selected for the SA team to participate in Los Angeles at the World Championships of the Performing Arts. In July, she represented South Africa in Los Angeles where she won 2 silver medals for modelling – one for formal runway and the other for photogenic. Jeanna also received 2 gold medals and 2 Junior Division Champion of the World trophies together with Bianca Fourie and Kathleen van Rooyen for hip-hop and a musical character dance. Jeanna’s message to other children is to:
“Chase your dreams and always take up new opportunities. Make memories wherever you go!” 2nd Princess - Little Miss Petite SA
Kayla Hogewind Kayla Hogewind is an 8-year old girl and a Grade 2 learner at Laerskool Die Poort. She entered the Little Miss Petite SA competition to build self-confidence, make new friends and learn more about herself. Although she did not win the pageant, it was clear that the experience was priceless and memories that this little one will cherish forever! Part of the Little Miss Petite SA competition was to choose a charity for which to raise money for. Kayla’s uncle and aunt passed away as a result of cancer and she felt that God chose her to raise money for this cause. R4 250.00 may not sound like much, but she believes every donation, no matter how small, can make a difference in the lives of people who live with cancer. When asked about her New Years’ message to all the people out there with cancer, she replied: “Life may not always give you a second chance, so we need to be grateful to God. Be thankful that you are alive to see another year of happiness, wealth, prosperity and joy. Lastly, may 2016 bring you successful treatments, reduced side-effects, remission and a cure. I hope you all find good health, warm smiles and a bright future in this New Year. “ Kayla’s message to other children is to:
Be strong, be brave, and above all else – love each other. 40

. .. a i p o t a m o n G here we come!
Finally! It’s every fairy or gnome’s dream to visit Gnomatopia and its capital city: Fairywood, where Gnomatopia’s most famous Fairies and Gnomes live, and the best part is that we are going to see a live show AND meet the famous, spectacular and absolutely gnomorgious gnome band: One DiGnomia! Today is the day that we leave for Gnomatopia, and I am so excited words can’t even explain it. “Izzy! Come on, we’re going to miss the flight!” I hear my mother yell from our perfectly decorated foyer. “I’m coming Mom, just double checking everything!” I yell back, running down the marble stairs. “Who is ready to go to the Dragonport?!” I exclaim, excitedly walking into the big foyer with my luggage that probably weighs two tonnes. “We are, we are, we are!” My five year old twin sisters giggle all giddy, jumping up and down. “Okay girls, let’s get your luggage in the Ladybuggorover”, my father says, while taking all of our pink luggage and struggling to fit everything into the Ladybuggorover. After making sure we have everything for the 100th time today, we are off to the Dragonport. My heart sinks into my belly when we come to a stop at the Dragonport. I have never been on an Aerodragon in the thirteen years of my fairy life and I am so nervous! My father summons three Trolly flies to help him with the enormous luggage that needs to be loaded onto the Aerodragon. We all stand in amazement of the absolute enormity of the spectacular Aerodragon that’s going to take us to Gnomatopia. The firefly attendants make us feel like royalty on the luxurious Aerodragon. As the gigantic Aerodragon departs, our quaint little town is left behind and the sparkling lights of Gnomatopia come into view.

Short Story Writer Suanné Nolte
As Gnomatopia’s glittering lights grow nearer, I just can’t contain my excitement. The twins and I begin to squeal with excitement as the Aerodragon, very slowly and smoothly, comes to a stop. As we descend the stairs of the enormous Aerodragon, I see the sparkling famous Fairywood sign against the mountain and I know that this is real. As we collect our baggage, we see Gnome Seacrest and I immediately run up to him, asking for his autograph and a fabulous photo with him. After the photo shoot I had with him, some people take us to our own private Limoworm, waiting to take us to the exquisite Five-star Mushroom Hotel. The hotel is far beyond anything I have ever experienced in my entire fairy life. The rooms are even bigger and better than the pictures that we saw in the “Gnome Makers Magazine”. This is going to be the most exciting few days of my life! After getting dressed into a hot pink and pearly white polka-dot dress and some white flats, we get into the Limoworm and drive off to the garden of the show tonight. When we get to the garden, there is total pandemonium. Fairies are crying and the gnome police are everywhere.
Oh No! Gnome Harry, one of the singers in the band was abducted by the Evil Spider Vamps. Through the hysteria, I realise that I can help. You see, I have special fairy powers where I think about someone and then I get a picture in my mind of the place where they are.
I close my eyes and try to think about Gnome Harry, his bouncy curls on his ohso-delicate head and his deep, beautiful voice, and bam-boom, a picture of him comes up in my mind, and it breaks my heart into a million pieces! It is a picture of him sitting on a rock in his stage clothes, practically shredded, with his hands tied up in front of him. I notice that it is in the Dark and Evil Forest Kingdom that belongs to the Evil Spider Vamps. He looks afraid as he desperately tries to get the rope off, probably hurting his wrists. I run up to my mother, getting my VIP pass to get to the rest of One DiGnomia. I run up to the entrance that says, “VIPs only” and show the big unicorn guard my pass. He opens the door for me and the rest of my family behind me to step in. We reach the room where the rest of One DiGnomia is. I see them and my legs start to wobble. They are even more handsome in real life! As we get closer, I see that Gnome Niall is close to tears. “Hello love, what is your name?” Gnome Liam asks in a sad tone. “F-Fairy Iz-Izzy”, I stutter out nervously. It stays silent and I take the opportunity to tell everyone that I have a way to find Gnome Harry. “Listen, I have a way that we can find Gnome Harry.” All heads turn to me at once. Now all eyes are on me. “See, I have a special fairy power where I just think of someone, in fact anyone, and a picture of them and where they are pops up into my head”, I say and they all look at me, quite amused.
“So what are we waiting for? Let’s go find Gnome Harry then!” Gnome Louis exclaims and all six of us shoot out of the building, unnoticed by everyone. “Have you checked where he is, Izzy?” Gnome Niall asks me in a soft voice, sniffing a bit.
We walk for what feels like ages and finally come to the spot where I saw Gnome Harry. “There he is!” We untie him and escape out of the Dark and Evil Forest Kingdom, almost getting caught by the Evil Spider Vamps themselves!
“Yes, I have actually. Uhm... he is in the Dark and Evil Forest Kingdom”, I say slowly and they gasp. “Like the Dark and Evil Forest Kingdom of the Evil Spider Vamps?” Gnome Louis asks, showing a sign of worry in his eyes. “Unfortunately, yes”, I say, giving a dramatic sigh afterwards.
We arrive back at the garden where the show is held at and sneak back into the “VIPs only” room, with Gnome Harry of course, and immediately get noticed. “You found Gnome Harry!” Mom exclaims and all of us nod and smile.
We walk and walk and walk and walk, until we stop at the gates of the Dark and Evil Forest Kingdom. All of us share nervous glances and I speak up, “I once read that the evil unicorn guards are everywhere in there.” “Woah...” Gnome Liam says and everyone else nods. One by one we all cautiously step into the forest. It’s so dark, no wonder they call it the Dark and Evil Forest Kingdom. Suddenly, Gnome Louis, who is leading everyone, stops us. “A unicorn guard is coming our way, what do we do?!” he whispers, freaking out. I look around and see a big tree that all of us can fit behind, not too far from us. “Behind the tree”, I whisper to them and we all run to hide behind the tree. While the unicorn guard walks by, I think of Gnome Harry. The picture is still the same as earlier. I sigh as we walk back to the path that we are following.
Everybody thanks me for helping the other gnomes find Harry and after all the thanking speeches, we head to our seats inside the huge garden. All of the gnomes finally come onto the stage, in clean clothes of course, and begin talking, “Hello Gnomatopia!” Gnome Harry shouts into his leafstickrophone. Everyone cheers in excitement and Gnome Louis lifts his leafstickrophone up to his lips. “This first song is dedicated to Fairy Izzy for helping us find Gnome Harry. Thank you Izzy!” He thanks me and I smile at them. “This is “What makes you fairy beautiful”; especially for you Izzy!” Gnome Liam says into his leafstickrophone as the music to starts. Everybody, including me, jumps, sings and dances to One DiGnomia’s music for the rest of the night, and we all live happily ever after...
The End...

SCHOOL NEWS
Dankie Kolonnade sentrum.
