s I drive the kids to school in the mornings and we pass by the wild animals roaming around, with the kudus eating leaves and the warthog running with its tail in the air, I’m reminded yet again of just how lucky we are to live in the Roodeplaat Dam area. There is so much to be thankful for, which was even more evident when I read the letter that Suzet van Schalkwyk wrote to thank everybody for their support when their house in the Leeuwfontein Estate burnt down, and when I heard about the tragedy that Schalk Viljoen had to endure when he was hit by a bus. These events brought everyone together in prayer, showing us exactly how much power it has. I believe that we live in a community where people still care about one another and pursue to live a life in the light that God shines upon us. Having a family of your own is a precious gift from above. So when Marleen van der Walt of Dynamic Women for Children gave me the opportunity to attend their function at the Krause-Wiid Country Estate & Spa, it truly touched me when she opened up and shared her passion to care for the less privileged children in her charge. In Marleen’s words, “It’s easier to raise a broken child than to heal an adult”, and seeing the little faces of beautiful, innocent children really tugs on one’s heartstrings. There is an African proverb that says that it takes a village to raise a child, which is why I’d like to ask our community to get involved and support Marleen in her mission to help give these children a better future.

On the 8th of May we celebrate mothers and mother figures worldwide, so make sure that your mother knows exactly how much you appreciate her this Mother’s Day. Then, on the 29th of June, it is Father’s Day, so let us show the men in our lives just how much they mean to us. The RoodeLife team wishes every mother and father living in the Roodeplaat area a happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. May you truly enjoy these days with those closest to you! Lastly, the first three months of the year are already gone and what a hectic time this has been for most of our readers. As such, we hope and trust that the rest of your year will be filled with happiness and success. Be sure to make quiet time a priority in your life. Take a good look around you and be grateful for that which you were given, instead of dwelling on that which has no real meaning. A HEARTFELT

THANK YOU We, the Van Schalkwyk family from Leeuwfontein, would like to take this opportunity to extend our most heartfelt gratitude to the people living in the Roodeplaat area. On 23 June 2015, we had just arrived at our stopover on our way to Cape Town, when we received a call from a very dear friend, informing us that our house in Leeuwfontein Estates was on fire. What followed from that moment on showed us again what a very special community we are fortunate to live in. On this night, the community as a whole joined hands to help. This included the firefighting teams from nearby estates, neighbours and strangers who helped to rescue goods from our residence. On our return from the Cape, we found a set of new clothes for each member of the family and were inundated with offers of places to stay. Our son’s friends helped replace all relevant school work that was lost and the community even started a trust fund to cover our immediate needs.

We believe that all will work out for the best. In closure, we would like to quote Psalm 23 verse 4&5:

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Explosives Factory AT LEEUWFONTEIN

Tucked away in the countryside, close to where the Kameelfontein Road now crosses the Edendale River as it enters the Roodeplaat Dam, you will find the remains of a 19th century explosives factory. A factory filled with fascinating history of strategic intent, enterprise, business acumen, deceit and international intrigue. The story goes back to 1887, when the government of President Paul Kruger granted Edward Lippert, a German immigrant, the exclusive right to locally manufacture gunpowder, ammunition and dynamite at predetermined prices, in an effort to be self-sufficient in case of war. Lippert established the Zuid-Afrikaansche Maatschappij voor Ontplofbare Stoffen, took over the existing gunpowder factory at Baviaanspoort (established in 1883), and built a new dynamite factory at Leeuwfontein. The manager and trained workers were brought in from Europe, most of them being from Avigliana, a town near the city of Turin in Italy, where there had been a dynamite factory since 1872. In 1889 the production of dynamite began.

In 1890, the first five “cartridge girls”, as they were known, aged between 16 and 21 years, arrived from Avigliana. The task of the cartridge girls was to extrude the dynamite, consisting of nitroglycerine absorbed in special clay known as kieselguhr, and deposit it into cylindrical cartridges of waterproof paper. It was dangerous work, but the breathing of nitroglycerine fumes gave the girls a beautiful complexion and they were all married soon after arriving at Leeuwfontein. By 1894, the Leeuwfontein factory had 60 employees of whom about half were cartridge girls. It was a large factory with 35 explosive magazines containing 300 boxes of dynamite each. The Leeuwfontein factory initially manufactured dynamite from imported raw materials, but it was much cheaper to import dynamite than to make it locally. The concession was, however, for the local manufacturing of dynamite, not imports. In 1892 it came to light that Lippert’s company was a branch of the French Nobel Trust Dynamite Company and was no longer importing the raw materials, but was importing dynamite in bulk, which was conveyed from the harbours by ox waggon to Leeuwfontein, where it was blended and packed into cartridges. He was making 200% profit by reselling it to the mining companies. This was a scandal, leading to the concession being revoked and the government taken over the concession. The government undertook to build a new factory closer to the gold mines on the Witwatersrand. Construction of the Modderfontein factory began in 1895 and in the course of the next two years all the equipment and workers at Leeuwfontein were transferred to Modderfontein.

And so the Leeuwfontein factory was forgotten, until the remains of the factory were discovered in 1978 by an angler on a fishing trip to the Roodeplaat Dam. Today, only a few structures remain, of which the most impressive is a bricklined tunnel through the embankment that surrounded a former explosives magazine.

BULLYING AT SCHOOL ARTICLE BY Mike Bolhuis

In many schools in South Africa, bullying is considered to be a normal part of growing up. However, there is nothing normal about it. A bully is a dominant person who abuses his power over people. Bullying can be physical, verbal or psychological. Someone who is bullied for a long time is often so caught up in a web of fear that they may decide not to tell anyone. Introverted and younger children are often targeted and persistently humiliated because they are easy targets. Children who fall victim to bullying can be injured by physical attacks or have their property damaged or stolen. They are more commonly verbally taunted, teased, cursed and/or threatened. They may even suffer under racist remarks, insults about their social status in school or their family status in the community. The attacks lead to psychological damage and emotional depression. Bullying in childhood can cause lifelong damage and it doesn’t stop at school. It is also widespread in many workplaces operated by adults who abuse their positions of authority by showing unduly nasty or even cruel behaviour to one another.

Often, those who were bullied at school become bullies themselves to vent their former resentment by doing to others what was done to them. The bullies and the victims are at risk of eventually becoming criminals. Sometimes, the victim feels too threatened to report incidents and for this reason, adult staff need to be observant and visible. Teachers must become more attentive regarding behavioural changes in children and investigate situations where a child withdraws or doesn’t participate in class activities, is emotional or misses classes. Parents should intervene immediately if they realise that their child is a victim of bullying. By the time they hear about it, the situation will usually be far worse than the child cares to admit. Parents should communicate this to the principal of the school immediately and teachers need to be informed. Complaints can be lodged with the police in serious cases, although one should only do so as a last resort. Once a criminal case has been opened, it will seriously affect the future of the offender.

It is important to follow-up on the actions taken. The child may still be the victim of bullying, but is just able to hide it better. Unless the bullies are confronted publicly and are made aware that any further bullying will lead to appropriate disciplinary action, they will not stop, just become more subtle. Even when confronted, the purpose of the confrontation should be rehabilitation. Where possible, try to determine the reason for the misconduct of the bully.

Many bullies hide behind the façade of bravado, while they are in unmanageable pain themselves. For example, they are often the victims of bullying themselves – perhaps even loveless and inhumane treatment by one or both parents, an older brother or sister, or other family members at home. This is their cry for help, trying to assert themselves in the world – and by bullying weaker children, they feel better about themselves and more in control. Article edited by Isebell Gauché

HELPFUL TIPS :

•

Try to convince the child to talk to a responsible adult about bullying – it can be either a teacher or parent.

•

Make it clear to the child that their complaint is taken seriously and the necessary people will be engaged.

•

Involve as many concerned people as possible. Ensure that the teachers are aware of the situation.

•

Teachers and parents must agree on the same strategy that they will follow to help the child.

•

The school must have a counter-bullying policy. It must clearly define what bullying is and what it is not. The policy must explain the consequences of such behaviour. The policy needs to be discussed with learners and parents on an annual basis to ensure that all involved are informed.

•

There should be clear guidelines on how children can inform the school of a complaint or concern. For example, a box in which learners can place complaints anonymously.

•

The action to be taken must be aimed at rehabilitation – and should not render the person in authority a bully him/herself.

•

Schools need to be proactive in assuring the constitutional right to safety of each learner.

DARE TO CARE AN EVENT BY Dynamic Women for Children

I had the privilege to attend the Dynamic Women for Children event at the Krause-Wiid Country Estate & Spa, where musician Pieter Koen sang a few of his biggest hits and Rev. Liesel Krause-Wiid was guest speaker. But the thing that truly touched the ladies the most was when Marleen van der Walt shared with us the work she does with the children in the settlements within the Kameeldrift and Kameelfontein areas. It was evident that this is a cause close to her heart, as she passionately talked about the children and all that she shares with them. When Marleen, together with her daughters Rozahn and Michelle, saw the conditions in which these children are growing up and the needs they have, in order to be able to rise above their situations, they decided to do something about it. Consequently, the Dynamic Women for Children organisation was born. Since January 2011, the kids have been going to Laerskool Kameelfontein, where they have been performing incredibly well. Special attention is given to these children to ensure that they can participate in sports and cultural events, thereby inspiring them to see that there is hope for a better future and that their futures do not have to repeat the quality of life of their childhoods. 12

Marleen also realised that these children not only needed help when it comes to their education; they also need help when the school bell rings at the end of the day – they need someone to help them with their homework, assignments and most importantly, food and love. As a result, Marleen and her daughters started a private care centre in 2012 in the Kameelfontein area to address these needs. They help children from the age of 4 (Grade RRR) up to 13 (Grade 7). At school, they are taught and taken care of in a protective environment. The children are also part of the “sandwich” project run by Laerskool Kameelfontein, where the school provides the children with sandwiches during each break. Dynamic Women for Children also bought the house directly next to the school and transformed it into a private care centre for children. Marleen is extremely proud of how well the children are doing! Fifteen of the children participated at the Eisteddfod and received A+ or A++. Three kids are in the top seven of their grade and another twenty received certificates for academic achievements. Marleen explained the schedule they’ve created, which divides their day between academia, sports and culture, giving them at least some time to enjoy life as a child and play with their friends.

At the end of the day, Marleen takes the children back to their homes, but ensures that they first enjoy a proper meal, so that they don’t have to go to bed with their tummies growling of hunger. To support one child costs approximately R500 per month, which includes food, transportation and payment of staff, and there are currently 45 children in their care. All costs are paid for by Dynamic Women for Children, who also rely on donations and funds, which they receive at functions such as Dare to Care. Derick Grobbelaar, one of the original residents of Pebble Rock Golf Estate and Principal of the Harcourts Northern Suburbs office in Pretoria, shares about his family, Harcourts and his outlook on life.

erick didn’t always work in real estate. He originally obtained his HOD at the Goudstad Onderwys Kollege before he became a professional rugby player from 1993 to 2003. He eventually exchanged the world of sport for marketing of properties and qualified as Principal on NQ5 level within the property sector. Married to Remonde, he lovingly describes her as “my beautiful wife” and they are the proud parents of six children, three of which have already left home. Derick describes parenthood as “People always say – count your blessings – and we, as parents, certainly can because we have riches in abundance.” The Grobbelaars love the outdoors and camping. For them it’s about touring and coastal holidays in the Southern Cape, especially during the December holidays, is a favourite. When asked about how the family spend their time together, it becomes obvious that they’re a closely knit family: “We enjoy the outdoor life tremendously and whenever we have a weekend off, we hobby farm, with each son having his own small farming project. The boys love sports and our daughter is a gymnast. We support them next to the rugby and hockey fields, the tennis courts and the gymnast hall whenever we can. Apart from such, the boys and I play a bit of golf.” Derick is one of the original residents of the region who stayed in Burkea Park as far back as 1997, when the estate still only featured gravel roads. He saw the communities of Leeuwfontein Estate, Sable Hills Waterfront Estate and Pebble Rock Golf and Bushveld Estate

develop over the years, which must have contributed to his love for the region as he explains it: “I know the area very well and have grown with it. This is most certainly one of the best places to stay in Pretoria for reasons such as excellent climate, the country lifestyle, and the warm and welcoming community... I am crazy about the true bushveld ambience of our surrounds.” For Derick, the best part of living in the Roodeplaat region is to see how this community still keeps on growing; thereby ensuring that it reaches its full potential. He states: “I am looking forward to see where this community will be in the next ten years.” He is currently a proud Poortjie parent and loves sharing his knowledge with the under 9’s rugby team. Every year, the Harcourts team tackles a community project, which forms part of the Harcourts Foundation to help people in the community. They have taken on a lead role in fundraising programmes for the Kungwini Welfare Organisation over the past two years. His passion for realty started years ago at a company called Nellie van Staden Properties. During his training year, he had the responsibility of finding suitable land and property for the development of retirement villages, which introduced him to property marketing. Derick’s involvement with Harcourts can be traced back to 2008, when he was offered an opportunity to start his own business – a Colliers International real estate franchise.

The Grobbelaar couple started the business and after three years of hard work, the Colliers Group decided to close their doors in South Africa. It left the Grobbelaar couple with a tremendous challenge, but soon they overcame the problem by registering a realty business in their own name. Derick describes it as difficult times and that the recession in 2011 really took its toll. “We knew that if we could only stand strong during the hard times that it would eventually become better.” It was indeed the case. We were approached by two other big names in the industry to open a branch. Harcourts approached us in 2012 and offered us the opportunity to open a franchise in Pretoria’s northern suburbs and the Moot. After negotiations, we became part of the Harcourts team. It was definitely one of our best business decisions, allowing us to go from strength to strength. We now have 25 agents and we are still expanding with the goal to become a team of 40 agents.”

How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

What is the most challenging aspect of your work?

My family really understands. We are in this together and we support each other. Unfortunately, we have to make sacrifices, even if it means that you will have to miss the family dinner.

Travel to see the Serengeti Wildebeest migration, to buy my own peace of heaven, and to be a successful farmer one day.

Working with people is a challenge, but also very fulfilling. Buying a home is one of the biggest decisions that you will make, as you are buying one of your most valuable assets in life. We therefore strive to walk the extra mile in finding you a place to call “home”.

What is your greatest fear and how do you manage it? I don’t fear. As a child of God, I believe that there is no challenge that is too big. My God is bigger than any fear. What are your ideals? Who has been your greatest inspiration? My dad. He had to work hard and he still does to provide for his family. He has an open heart with a love for people. Nothing will ever be too much for him. He can never say “No” to anybody and is always willing to help wherever he can. He has been our godly leader and is someone that we as a family can look up to.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? I am a full born and bred “Vrystaatse Boerseun”. Therefore, I see myself going back to my roots to become a farmer and do what I truly love. I also want to give my children the privilege to experience that quality of life. What inspired your involvement in Harcourts? The Harcourts people are truly committed to the brand, seeing big leaders in the industry nationally, as well as internationally, having a passion for people and real estate. Down to earth leaders that are willing to dream with you. Since being part of the Harcourts family, we managed to end a successful 2015 financial year as the Nr 11 office in South Africa, forming part of 140 offices. It was also my best year in real estate, ending in the 6th position of over a 1 000 Harcourt national agents.

How important are good employees to your success? Great things were never done by one person, but done as a team. It’s important to surround yourself with people with the same vision and commitment. RoodeLife had the pleasure to visit the double storey, five-bedroom and fourbathroom residence of Johan and Elsa Strydom.

Karamen’s Thys Maritz was the project manager who brought the creative design from architect Jaco Botha to life. The newly built home took 18 months to complete and all the people involved in the completion of the house came from the local communities. The house, with its elegant stairways consisting of a combination of wood and cement, large stack doors, succulent rich garden and spacious entertainment areas, offers a welcoming retreat from everyday work responsibilities. Featuring a combination of modern and practical with classical elements, the home with its wood and lead glass finishes inspires creative thinking. Bulbul Road 25 is where yesterday and today meet, featuring modern designs with classical finishes. Lead glass and wood are used throughout the house in unique combinations, such as the contemporary bar counter style with its old wood finish and the staircase, key doors and wall units featuring the same elements throughout. The design of the house was done with consideration for the living needs and interests of the couple’s twin daughters who are currently students at TUKS. As such, the design caters to their needs for openness and togetherness without compromising on their privacy. Their two rooms are exceptionally spacious, featuring a lead glass sliding door to connect the rooms, while their wing furthermore includes a private TV room and study. A wood and lead glass door combined with large windows overlooking the dam adds a unique angle to the main bedroom.

“Sunny” and “welcoming” describe the west facing house of the Strydom family. It overlooks the Roodeplaat Dam, reflecting their passion for people and entertaining. With stack doors linking the interior with the outdoor environment, it allows for amazing views of the surrounding landscape from every room, and with a swimming pool and bar, they have been able to host an event for as many as 85 guests. Karen Viljoen designed the immaculately kept garden with the focus on the creation of a succulent focussed outdoor environment that facilitates free movement of the family’s pets throughout the garden. The family wanted to link indoor and outdoor living and therefore needed to raise the garden to ensure that one could walk directly out into it. Johan and Elsa love dogs and have thus incorporated features in the garden to create an animal-friendly environment. They have also made provision for the privacy and comfort of their housekeeper Jeanette, who plays an integral role in the support structure of the family’s housekeeping needs, and for their gardener Klaas, who is responsible for keeping the garden well maintained. Although artworks are kept to a minimum, what is particularly noticeable is the stunning painting of the twin daughters commissioned from well-known artist Marie Vermeulen Breedt. The large windows enable a panoramic view of the Roodeplaat Dam. The usage of natural colours consisting of maroon in selected spaces and various shades of green throughout give it a hint of country feel, successfully attaining the goal of becoming one with nature in Sable Hills Waterfront Estate. It becomes obvious that the entire home, including the fusion with the modern and wood-designed kitchen, has been designed with socialising in mind. A couch underneath the stack window provides for a socialising hotspot in the kitchen.

The family originally struggled with their first interior designer, who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand their project requirement, which is why Elsa advises any homeowner to make sure that they make use of the services offered by reputable companies and service providers that can deliver on time and within their budget requirements. According to Elsa, the house is still a work in progress, but they love living in it! She especially appreciates the hard work and effort on the part of Kobie Hill in completing the woodwork in the house.

POPULAR WITH OLYMPICS CANOE TEAMS

The Roodeplaat region recently played host to the canoe sprint champions of the world. The Canoe team from Hungary visited South Africa to train at the Roodeplaat Dam in preparation for the Rio Olympics 2016.

iklós Dudás and his coach Zoltán Pál, along with Hungarian head coach Csaba Hüttner stayed at the 4-star Sable House Country Retreat, while the rest of the Hungary team and coach Gábor Martinkó enjoyed the hospitality of the Academy for Canoe Development at the Roodeplaat Dam. General and Marketing Manager of Sable Hills Country Retreat, Lyzelle van der Merwe and head of the Roodeplaat Canoe Academy, Philip van Tonder, led an international marketing campaign to promote the Roodeplaat region as a training facility for international teams. The teams from the Czech Republic and Finland have trained here before and will also train at Roodeplaat Dam during the next few months. Sable House Country Retreat provides the food packages, while the Canoe Academy provides the canoes and training facilities. The Academy for Canoe Development’s history can be traced back to 2008 and it is still the only canoe club in the country that specialises in flat water kayaking and canoe sprints. They are also known for their commitment to the promotion of the sport among the surrounding communities. The Academy offers a development programme for young disadvantaged children whereby they give them the opportunity to develop their sports talents, while also providing additional academic assistance. Their high-performance programme has helped to put Roodeplaat on the map with the provision of training facilities for top athletes on an international level. When asked why they train at the Roodeplaat Dam, spokesperson for the Hungary team, Kristóf Szabó, explained that the weather in South Africa is consistent, giving the team more opportunities and time to train. It is currently winter in Hungary and consequently, they need a warmer climate to train for the Olympic Games, which will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro starting in August 2016.

South Africa’s climate is similar to that of Brazil, but the humidity level is lower than in many of the warmer countries, where it becomes too hot and humid early on in the day. The team has trained in Spain, where the water surface can be really crowded and Malaysia where the humidity levels are pretty high. Hungary’s team arrived in South Africa late January and returned home early March. During their stay, training consisted of two sessions daily at the Roodeplaat Dam, which entailed a combination of gym workouts, paddling and running. They usually train from January to February, and again from October to November in foreign countries. The rest of the season they spend training at home. The team previously trained in South Africa at the Roodeplaat Dam in 2004, but due to plant overgrowth on the dam, they had to seek other venues for training in the years after. The plant overgrowth is now something of the past and they returned to Roodeplaat Dam, which according to Lyzelle van der Merwe, is one of the best canoe and kayak training venues in the world. Kristof Szabó explained: “Life is difficult for an athlete at the end of their racing career. They have to start over and at the bottom of a hierarchy of a new field of life that they aren’t familiar with. They are used to routines of training, eating, competing and sleeping.” The government of Hungary and the private sector supports those who study in parallel with sports in education programmes, in age categories, including Juniors, Under 23s and adults for European / World and Olympic champions too. They offer help to athletes as sponsorships, monthly allowances and bursaries for studies, so that when the athlete’s professional career ends in their field of sport, they can start another one right after in “normal” life, because they have their diploma at hand.

n the question of what the most important part of a 200m canoe sprint race is, Csaba Hüttner answered that a good start is essential – “However, with the K4 events, it is important to have a person in the front seat who has a good stroke… the rest of the team makes the muscle and must put the boat under him.”The team said that they have respect for the peaceful transition from one government to another in South Africa and Nelson Mandela’s role in the transition, as well as the way that the different races in the country manage to live peacefully. During their stay, they visited the Union Buildings and took pictures at the Nelson Mandela statue. Some attended safaris and they participated in a four-hour diamond mine tour at Cullinan, whilst also having enjoyed the opportunity to go on a township tour arranged by Philip van Tonder. Participation in the Rio Olympics on individual level is not guaranteed, since racing in the K4 event is determined through their position at the May-June trails. Competition is exceptionally strong in the women’s canoeing. Although a world champion in K1 - 1 000m, Erika Medveczky, who is a strong contender for a gold medal at the Olympics, will have to compete against five gold medallists and world champions. Commitment to the sport is essential to become an Olympic athlete and it takes years of training. When asked what inspired her to become a canoeist, she answered “A teacher at our school asked me if I wanted to join the kayak team and that’s where it started. I was only eight years old.”

The canoe and kayak races will be hosted at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Copacabana from the 15th to the 20th of August. Concerns about the quality of the water at Lagoa were deemed unnecessary, as the Hungarian Canoe Federation took samples of the lake’s water and compared such with the tap and bottled water of Rio de Janeiro. The results, according to the federation, showed that the water of the lake is clearer than any of the aforesaid waters of Rio, so they have decided to bring their own bottled water with them for the race. The head coach explained that although they have a strong chance of securing gold in the K4 men’s race, their competition for overall winning comes from Russia, Belarus and Germany. For Miklós Dudás, the K1 sprint rower, who managed to secure a gold medal ahead of Peter Menning from Sweden and Ed McKeever from Great Britain in the 2015 European Games at Baku, the challenge is to repeat and improve on his performance. Miklós targets a record time of 34.00 for the K1 race in Rio later this year. The Hungarian team’s message to the young canoe and kayak enthusiasts of the Roodeplaat region is: “Love what you do – work hard at it. Love the environment that surrounds you. Use the water as an escape from work and give it everything you have if you want to succeed and then even if you don’t succeed, you will still have benefitted from the training.”

Short-term insurance provides the peace of mind of not having to dip too deeply into your own pocket when you suffer damage or loss of your property. In a nutshell, insurance means the transfer of risk. By paying a monthly sum to an insurance company, you are handing over the risk of having to repair or replace your possessions at your own cost. But let’s face it, your eyes glaze over when you’re faced with ploughing through pages of jargon in the contract. When it comes to your short-term insurance policies there are a few words and concepts worth understanding. Five common short-term insurance pitfalls Your short-term insurance contract can often seem overwhelming in its complexity, and particularly frustrating when your claims are not paid out in full. How can you ensure you don’t get ‘tripped up’ when taking out short-term cover? We look at five common pitfalls in the terms and conditions of a short-term insurance policy. Underinsurance: To avoid this, ensure that the insured value of the item or property is equal to the current replacement value, not the original purchase price. Your premiums will likely increase with a higher replacement value, but it could save you a fortune in the long run. We often find that goods stay insured for the original value – for example, a dining room set bought 10 years ago would be insured for R6 000. But to replace the dining room set could cost R20 000 today, so the claimant could be left very disappointed when they leave the shop with an inferior product to what they had. Excess: An excess amount is the first amount payable for which the client is responsible – it is the agreed amount of money you pay the insurer as a contribution towards repairs or replacement. An excess amount is applicable to most short-term policies, and it is explicitly stated in all policy documents. Clients are advised to read this part of the policy carefully so they don’t get a shock when it comes to claiming. Even if client have excess Waiver, additional excesses will apply and must be understood.

Exclusions: With motor insurance, exclusions are one of the main pitfalls. Clients often try to claim for mechanical or electrical breakdowns, but these form part of the car’s warranty and are explicitly excluded from most short-term insurance covers. Be sure to check that your policy covers multiple drivers of your vehicle and make sure you have declared the use of your vehicle correctly for either business use or private use. All-risk insurance: This refers to items that are mobile, such as jewellery, cameras, laptops, phones or tablets. These are generally insured under your household content policy only when they are at your home address. As soon as you leave the property, you need to supplement the cover with an all-risk addition to your policy. You should supply original purchase invoices or valuation certificates if applicable, to your insurance company, and keep a copy as proof of ownership. Personal liability: This refers to insurance against a third party suing you in your personal capacity, for financial loss, physical injury or death. The most common form is fixed in your householder’s insurance, covering the structure of your home and its permanent fittings, but further cover typically includes medical costs, restoring or replacing damaged property, pain and suffering to the injured party, loss of income, legal costs and expenses. Standard cover for personal liability is between R2m and R5m, but this may not be enough to save you from financial ruin if someone does claim against you. Most insurers, therefore, offer top-up cover at a low additional premium – extending your cover to R10m or even R20m. As the chances of you claiming are very low, extended cover is highly affordable and probably well worth it. With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day just around the corner, we wonder how we can spoil these special people in our lives. From a health perspective, I would like to share some insight and ideas…

Most women I know desperately need more time... for themselves! Not more time to help with homework or drive kids around. Not more time to spend making everybody else’s lives easier. Instead, she needs time to do what she wants to do – whether it’s to finish the book she’s been dying to read or just having time-out to do nothing, hear nothing and see nothing. Staying active and finding time to exercise is usually also a struggle for busy Mommies. Mothers seldom allow themselves to be selfish, to do that one thing that benefits no-one, except them. For Mother’s Day, you can give her a “time-out” voucher or a card, which she can exchange with you at any time, should she feel it’s time to take time out! The voucher can represent a morning, a day or even a weekend away. Maybe she wants to train with her friends two days per week, but the kids need to be dropped off or picked up at that time. Perhaps you can help out for two of the five school days. It has been proven, that while you exercise, your body releases endorphins or what we call, the “feel good hormones”. Combine this with the time she spends with her friends and you have a winning recipe. Life is a balancing act and if Mommy is constantly doing everything for everyone

else, she is going to burn out. Help her achieve balance in her life by making it possible to spend some time doing the things she loves most. Men on the other hand, experience major stress at work and in our current challenging economic times, there’s a lot of pressure on them to provide for their families. Stress and a lack of sleep may lead to the excessive production of the hormone cortisol, which in turn may lead to weight gain. You might think it is a good thing to go to gym after only four hours of sleep, but you’re not doing your body any favours, in fact, just the opposite is true. To spoil your husband this Father’s Day, give him a blank menu and let him write down all his favourite foods, meals and treats. You can then surprise him with a meal from “his menu” where you and the children make Daddy’s favourite meal together. As a Mother, you can ensure that your husband gets a healthy meal every day when he gets home from work. Make time to sit around the table during supper. Allow him to talk about his day and to de-stress emotionally. After all, you are his “safe place” – the person who listens to him, stands by him and loves him for the man he is. He also needs to stay active and lead a balanced life. Support him if he wants to play a round of golf or go hunting with

the guys. When the kids are a bit older, it’s possible for the family to do some activities together. In the Roodeplaat area, mountain biking, jogging, squash and golf are very popular. As we are approaching the halfway line of 2016, it’s important to reassess your life and make sure that you are still on track concerning your health. Look at things, such as your level of activity, eating habits and leisure time. There is still a long way to go and you do not want to burn out or get sick just because you neglected looking after yourself and your family. We all get 24 hours a day. What you do with yours and how you spend it is up to you, as long as you can look back at the end of each day and not have any regrets.

& SMAAKVOL The idea for Smul&Smaakvol originated over a good cup of java between friends, Sanet Mouton and Sonja Biehler. They are both creative in their own right – Sonja with food and Sanet with décor. Combining their passions for the first Smul&Smaakvol morning took place in May 2013. Since then, it has become an informal quarterly gathering between a group of friends who share a love for God, good food and laughter! The ladies are treated to a cooking and table setting demonstration with a taste testing afterwards. However, the rules are flexible and often the ladies get involved in the preparation and demonstration. The classes are focused on inspiring new ideas, whilst showing how easy it is to create delicious dishes and stunning décor without hassle. The mornings are based on themes, which have included: Summer Fare, Winter with Venison, Delectable Desserts, Easy Gourmet and Gift-Wrapped Christmas Food.

Sonja’s Food Tips: I believe anybody can create a wonderful meal with confidence. The keys to success include passion, quality ingredients, a good recipe and with that, the secret tip in a recipe. That is why I like to do demonstrations, as there always tends to be someone with a question. At Smul&Smaakvol, it is a fun and safe environment where we believe there are no silly questions! Everybody, myself included, has something to learn and something to contribute.

Sanet’s Décor Tips: I just love to decorate, make something beautiful and to, most importantly, add that personal touch. You don’t necessarily have to use expensive items or spend a lot of money on your decorations, therefore a few tips from my side:

Use the items in your house, but in an unconventional way. For example, turn your sherry glass upside down to use as a candle base inside a glass (Consol) bottle. Use our beautiful nature – natural decorations from your garden/surrounding veld, like a thorny branch, will make a beautiful display on your dining room table. Look at your table or area in a holistic manner – don’t get stuck on the detail of a glass or a plate, but rather keep an eye on how the total picture fits together. Lastly, just enjoy and have fun thinking out of the box. In my opinion, there are no rules for putting a personal touch on decorations to make your guests feel special.”

HOW TO MAKE: Place the couscous and butter in a mixing bowl. Pour the water and stock over, and cover with cling wrap for 5 minutes. Use a fork to loosen and fluff the couscous. Add all the remaining ingredients and mix through. Taste and add salt & pepper if necessary. Spoon into glass serving jars and then place it into the refrigerator.

flour baking powder ground nutmeg white sugar butter vanilla essence raisins sweet potato, mashed bicarbonate of soda ground cinnamon salt soft brown sugar large eggs crushed pineapple walnuts chopped

MAKE THE CAKE: Preheat oven at 180Â°C and spray 2 x 20cm loose-bottom cake tins with Spray â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n Cook. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, bicarb, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and white sugar. Beat the butter and brown sugar together. Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix. Add eggs one by one, whilst mixing. Lastly, add the pineapple, vanilla essence, raisins, walnuts and sweet potato, and beat until all is mixed. Divide the batter into two cake tins. Bake for approximately 1 hour, until the cakes are firm. Remove and cool.

To help us understand how our relationship with God plays out in practical terms, Jesus had the following to say:

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbour as yourself.”

I suggest that we have a strong “home base” in one of these tWO areas: •

Knowing God with your heart.

I then challenge you to do what Matthew 22 suggests: •

Love with ALL ... meaning to throw yourself wholeheartedly into Him.

Love with AND ... meaning to experiment beyond your own comfort zone.

THE FIRST “HOME BASE” FOR SOME PEOPLE IS THAT THEY LOVE GOD WITH ALL THEIR HEART God made us to flourish when we EXPERIENCE things. I remember being small and wanting to touch and taste almost everything! We even had a go at eating some earth worms! In Psalm 34 the writer encourages us to taste and see that the Lord is good. Maybe that desire to experiment for oneself is a great starting point for how we engage our Creator. So what does it mean to love the Lord your God with all your heart? I think that my heart refers to my capacity for emotional engagement and experiential knowledge. Ephesians 3:17-19:

“…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge— that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Many churches present God in a very cognitive way, while this passage suggests that we could know Him by experience and for ourselves! So HOW do we move from just knowing God in an intellectual way, to an experiential way?

We can know the love of christ The very first experience of the love of Christ comes through how he forgives us our sins. Much of Christianity is sometimes very sin conscious, while the New Testament is much more love conscious. We have the invitation to accept His forgiveness as beautifully portrayed in the story of the Prodigal Son. We can have a practical experience of God’s love when we begin to enjoy every small moment of our existence, as if it was a gift from Him. Every little taste and smell that you enjoy should render a song of thanksgiving, as we live in the blessing of everyday life. Every so often, we get surprised by a big and very special experience. Sometimes it’s a gift, a picture of immense beauty or an art piece that grips our hearts. Those are the gifts of life and I see them as the goodness of our loving Father taking care of us.

We can be ROOTED securely on love Ephesians 3:19:

“May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love.” A person who is rooted in love would definitely live a life of worship in which your whole life becomes a song to your Heavenly Father. Worship does not just engage the beautiful moments in life, but also expresses our deepest hurts and disillusionments. We get to know both God and ourselves in a very different way as we struggle through the tough times in life. The picture of being rooted immediately reminds me that I will have times where life tries to uproot me, but the experience of the love of Christ anchors me, so that I know Him practically for myself, even in my most difficult moments. We can be FILLED to the fullness of Christ Ephesians 3:19:

“…and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” The fullness of God becomes a daily experience for people who are willing to journal their thoughts and prayers. Putting my heart on paper has always brought a very deep sense of the presence of the Lord to my life. The fullness of God implies that my truth is sometimes challenged by scripture and also by other people who love God. Discipline and correction is therefore a further experience of Him who loves me enough to steer me away from whatever may bring destruction to my life. This is a practical prayer that brings me daily to a place where I have conversations with God and allow Him to guide my desires and thoughts.

THE SECOND “HOME BASE” FOR SOME PEOPLE IS THAT THEY LOVE GOD WITH ALL THEIR MIND Many people engage God from a very strong intellectual “home base”. Is faith in opposition to our intellect? Are we supposed to just believe and not use our minds as we engage God? Some even want to suggest that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts and that we are not supposed to use our minds in our faith.

I do not agree with the above mentioned perspective, as I find in scripture (read Ephesians 3:16-19 in the Amplified Bible) that we are invited to use our full mental capacity as we desire to fully come to the knowledge of the glory of God. We can KNOW God with or minds through personal revelation The prayer in Ephesians 1 desires a spirit of wisdom and revelation into the knowledge of God. I find the direct implication of revelation is that we grow in our knowledge and understanding of who God is and who we are, and how it all relates to a life filled with godly understanding. By implication, our minds are activated by revelation and are not rendered useless. The deeper question here, however, is whether you have a direct experience in which God reveals His nature and His purposes to you? Many times we live on the revelations that we hear from other believers, but this prayer in Ephesians 1 desires that you will receive these “AHA!” experiences directly from the heart of your Creator. We can KNOW God by gaining His perspective on life When Paul prays for having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, he desires that we will see in the way that God sees. I’ve heard so many people ask these questions: How can there be a loving Being if there is so much hurt on this planet? How are we supposed to understand this? Well, if I took my kids to park with swings and slides, and someone gets hurt, this place intended for happiness becomes a place of hurt. So here’s the question…how can I, as a loving father, expose my children to a place they can get hurt if I love them so much? We expose our children to life and sometimes it will include hurt, but the fact is that I go through the hurt with them and then encourage them to get onto the “slide” again! We cannot always understand why bad things happen, but we can understand what God wants to do through those challenges. I have seen how He cares for us as a loving Father and through our deepest hurt. He desires to bring perspective of the beauty that sometimes grows out of the ashes of our lives! Having free will is a gift, but it can be a destructive thing if we do not use it wisely. And so much of the hurt on our planet is caused by people who use their free will to hurt others. God cannot be blamed for how people do not steward the earth properly. 40

We can KNOW God by living with strong convictions Loving God with our minds also includes establishing his paradigms and values as strong convictions in our minds. It is very destructive for us when we are caught in two minds and uncertainty rules our decisions. Some of those convictions that should govern our lives include: • • • • •

God is love, even when our circumstances tell us otherwise. God is close, even when our emotions confuse us. We are crowned with honour, even when we feel insecure. For every problem there is a solution, even when we feel trapped. Difficulty is a blessing, because it grows us in ways nothing else can.

To seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33) is the process where we love God with our minds, as we engage Him to discover His values for a life filled with His truth. We can KNOW God by loving Him with all of our might Most people do not see their true potential. When God does His work of inspiration through you and you truly become who He created you to be, then you are loving Him with all of your might. Your capacities and your talents are gifts directly from God, and they will bring meaning and fulfilment to your life when you begin to use it to worship Him on a daily basis. This will be your unique contribution to our planet. Timothy 3:16-17:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” I challenge you to find your “home base”. Step outside of your own comfort zone and explore what it could mean to love God with all of your HEART and with all of your MIND.

My name is Nadine Burger. I am 15 years old and a Grade 9 student of Curro Roodeplaat. About 3 years ago, in 2013, I started participating in pageants, because I have always loved the spontaneity and the art of performing. In the beginning it was a lot of fun, especially being able to wear fancy dresses, the hair, the make-up and the high heels. However, when I started competing competitively, I realised the hard work that it consists of. Hours of ramp practice, interviews, uncomfortable dress fittings and blisters became a regular occurrence. Our previous Miss World, Rolene Strauss, believed in “beauty with a purpose”. As pageants became my world, I kept hearing how some people stereotype pageant girls as being superficial, and that all it is about is blond hair and high heels. During my year of reign in different titles, I was convinced that these stereotypes were spoken by those who had no insight into the pageant world industry. The definition of “beauty with a purpose” is using your title as a platform to give the voiceless a voice and make a difference to those who never had opportunities. This includes charity work, donations, fundraising projects, awareness programmes and more. These long hours of hard work and training truly pay off in the end.

I believe in the quote by Max Lucado: “You change your life by changing your heart”. After seeing the changes that I have made in people’s lives, it has changed my heart. Through the privilege of being able to win these titles, I use the change created in my own heart to give a message of hope and love to others. I thank the Heavenly Father for giving me the talent and the opportunity to make a small difference in people’s lives.

After I began winning big titles, I came to the realisation of how much responsibility each title holds.

WHEN I GROW UP

What i want to be WHEN I GROW UP Have you ever read the credits that play at the end of your favourite movie? Did you even catch the name of the director of that movie? Well, the next time you do, it will be my name, Bernard Posthumus, that you see, because that’s what I want to be when I grow up! I didn’t always want to be a movie director. It all started when I was much younger. I LOVED listening to music (which I still do) and I always wanted to be an artist like my dad. Ever since I figured out how the remote control worked, I would always watch the music videos listed on the bonus features on the DVD. One day, we bought the movie Real Steel and I was very curious to see how they did the editing and the movie set.

When I saw the awesome camera work, the cool movie actors and some of the “behind the scenes” fun, I immediately took interest!

The movie editor has the ability to overlay different styles, like old-movie grain, camera shakes, or slow motion and speed up. I absolutely loved doing this!

A few days later, my dad shot a short film and asked me to help him do the editing. I was quite surprised, but at the same time I felt excited. When we were done with the editing, my dad said, “Bernard, the next one you have to do”.We have a superb editing software program on our computer that allows you to add, remove and change scenes in the film.

With the next short film that my dad shot, I got my chance to do the editing, my dad was so impressed with the special effects that he gave me fifty bucks (which he doesn’t do very often) and asked me if I could also do the next short film. It was then that I realised that this is what I want to be when I grow up. A movie director!

You can add sound clips and special effects. It can even do animations! You can, for instance, add a clip of a dog and a funny voice, and then have the dog talk to you. This is the best part and it is great fun!

I want to be a famous Christian movie director; making a difference, spreading the Word and reaching nations. The world is my oyster!!!
