growing up When you visit the home of someone with young children, what’s the first thing the kids want to do? Show you their room, right? Toddlers to elementary school-aged children tend to be inherently proud of their spaces. It’s their comfort zone, and why shouldn’t they want to show it off? While going over to a friend’s house for Photography by Rett Peek the first time as a kid was mostly exciting, it could also be kind of jarring. Other families have different bedtime routines, eat foods you’ve maybe never tried, and keep things in confusing places—it’s a whole other world outside your own. I remember once, at a friend’s house, opening the cabinet door under the kitchen sink (where my parents have always kept the trash can), and then feeling embarrassed to find only cleaning supplies while my friend laughed. She led me to the pantry, where their trash can lived, and I looked at it, bewildered, wondering why on earth they would keep it there. The realization that the world is bigger than their own personal experience is an important early lesson for children. In the meantime, it’s important they feel safe, comfortable, and loved in their homes so they can use that space to grow and learn. In this issue, we’ve featured three family homes that couldn’t be more different in style, yet all had that similar underlying intention: to be a safe, happy world where little ones can grow.

Laundry Made Lovely From ordinary utility room to an eye-catching space, designer Marianna O’Dea renovates with equal parts function and style BEFORE
SherwinWilliams’ “Oyster Bay”
R E F R E S H
Marianna O’Dea first met Lindsay and Kyle Skinner when they lived near one another. When the Skinners moved into a new house, they knew just who to call for help with a few updates to their new home. The first order of business was the laundry room. “With three kids, she is doing laundry all the time,” Marianna says. “She wanted a space where she could come in and not feel stressed.” Overall, Lindsay desired a room that was calm, soothing, and easy on the eyes. The cabinetry color was the starting point for the design, followed by the floor tile. “This truly set the color palette for the rest of the room,” Marianna says. Other elements, including the metallic ceiling paint and wallpaper, seemed to follow naturally. Lindsay also wanted to expand her countertop space and prioritize storage. Marianna knew she had to get creative to check these boxes in a small space, recalling Lindsay “no longer wanted to see her stuff out or have piles of laundry on the floor.” The renovation now includes solutions personalized to the family’s needs, such as space underneath the countertops for a vintage-inspired rolling laundry cart. “Starting with a small space gives you a direction to bleed into the rest of the house,” Marianna says. “With a such a cool laundry room, it really sets the bar high.”

A gold fixture sheds light on the sink and allows for a streamlined look in the space. “I wanted something that was simple and sleek,” Marianna says.

The faucet incorporates a more sculptural element into the space. The sink is surrounded by quartz countertops with a waterfall edge on the far end, a feature the homeowner knew she wanted.

TILE THAT INSPIRES
The geometric marble mosaic tile was one of the first design decisions Marianna and Lindsay made. “It really established the overall color palette,” Marianna says of the flooring.

“Lindsay loves Anthropologie,” Marianna says, noting the retailer was the first place they went to look for knobs for the cabinetry doors. The animal-print influenced wallpaper mimics the lines in the quartz countertops and includes metallic silver tones, adding to the mix of metals.

BACKYARD BLISS
Twice as Nice Two rounds of improvements—first construction and hardscaping, then color and soft furnishings— bring a whole new life to this beloved backyard

While the Johnsons made lots of cosmetic and functional updates to this space, one detail they have not touched since moving in is the blue tile lining the edge of the pool, which served as a sign of things to come for the backyard’s future color palette.
The backyard Liz Johnson describes from when she and her family moved into their home seven
years ago bears little resemblance to the place they cherish today. The steps from the back door led to a small cement landing and a pool with concrete surround. “We had several different architects and landscapers come over to ask them, What do we do with this space?” Liz says. Little Rock’s Burt Taggart, III, of Taggart Design Group had the solution: Build a deck over the cement and elevate much of the living space—including a pergola-covered sitting area, bar and outdoor kitchen, and flagstone fireplace—on a landing a few steps above the pool. Burt also suggested Liz and her husband, Mike, talk to the Pleasant Valley Country Club, whose golf course backs up to the house, about allowing them to extend the deck slightly onto the course to increase the area surrounding the pool. “Where the lounge chairs are now, that area was part of the golf course,” Liz explains. Burt’s sister, Whitney Phelps—a designer with Taggart Design Group and one of Liz’s friends—also worked on the project,
24 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
collaborating with Burt on decisions that would add flair to the space, such as flagstone pavers around the pool and a stacked-stone water feature. All of that work, which improved the area’s functionality, could be considered Phase 1 of this project. Phase 2 happened about six years later almost by accident. Liz had inherited her mother’s antique collection of blue-and-white ginger jars, and mutual friends connected her with designer Molly Young to help work the heirlooms into her home. “Molly went through every single room of the house and just took it up a notch,” Liz says. “Then she came out here to the backyard and said, Let’s do more with this.” Molly helped Liz pick out new furnishings for most areas and refresh others where possible, all while keeping in mind the blue and white found indoors. For example, she had the barstools spray-painted white to fit the new color scheme and worked with Laura’s Draperies & Blinds to outfit the pergola with a resort-inspired awning, drapes, and custom pillows that add panache. The final result is a comfortable, stylish outdoor space that finally feels like home.

FAMILY STYLE
The versatility of the backyard’s layout means that Liz and Mike have the opportunity to share the space with their loved ones, particularly their two children: Win, 23, and Kate, 21. “They’re grown and out of the house now, but we’ve had a lot of good times here,” Mike says, counting Razorback watch parties, school and fraternity fundraisers, and simple get-togethers with friends and family among memories made. Liz enjoys coffee every morning on the sectional (seen at left) with ginger jars from her and her mother’s collections in view. Molly drew inspiration from the Chinoiserie for fabric and furnishings, as seen in the bambooinspired side table.
Antique Brick & Block built the brick bar and back wall during the initial construction of this space, and Whitney white-washed the surfaces by hand to soften their appearances.

IN LIVING COLOR
Liz worked with landscape designer Kelly Holbert to fill glazed ceramic containers throughout the backyard. Since the deck backs up to Pleasant Valley Country Club, the pops of color (along with the blue furnishings) stand out cheerfully against the greenery of the golf course.
The Johnsons’ furry friends, Maddie and Tino, enjoy the outdoors just as much as their owners.
Containers by the pool are filled with red coleus, lantana, calibrachoa, SunPatiens, Mandevilla, palm, and sweet potato vines.

Grazing Boards Galore Stephanie Bryant of The Blonde Kitchen shows us how to get on board with the latest trend in hors d’oeuvres

Snack boards, picky platters, or the more traditional charcuterie board —whatever
you call these boards loaded with bitesize edibles, they are popping up everywhere. As the owner of The Blonde Kitchen, Stephanie Bryant assembles about 20 boards per week for her clients in Northwest Arkansas. “I love the idea of small, handheld bites. The board becomes a centerpiece at a gathering—people can hang out around it, and they are really pretty, too,” she says. The Harrison native got her start in the food industry three years ago. “I’ve been obsessed with food my whole life,” she says. “I grew up watching The Food Network, and I would even pretend to host my own cooking show.” After going through several majors at the University of Arkansas, her best friend encouraged her to give culinary school a try. Here, she connected with her passion and eventually started a private chef business where she did meal prep for busy families as well as catering for small events and parties. “I had someone ask for a fruit board for one of these, and that rolled into creating a charcuterie board, and then a brunch board, and a for-kids-only board. I thought, I could put anything I want on a board, and now I’ve been making them for a year,” she says. She also credits the local community with helping to get her business up and running. “Fayetteville loves
28 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
local things, so they welcome local businesses with open arms,” Stephanie says, noting there’s also a great network of women-owned businesses in the area. “I’m so thankful for these people who have hired me for events and helped to give me exposure.”
“The board becomes a centerpiece at a gathering— people can hang out around it, and they are really pretty, too.” —Stephanie Bryant
Customers can bring her their own platters or she will build an appetizer for you on her custom boards crafted by Arkansas woodworker Derek Anderson of Bearded Buffalo Woodcraft (@ beardedbuffalowoodcraft). The boards typically range from 10-inch circles or squares up to 5-foot boards—that’s right, a 5-foot board!—but can be customized to any size. “The largest one I’ve done was 9 feet long,” Stephanie says. To order, contact her through Instagram (@ the_blonde_kitchen). Check out three of our favorite options—all of which are also customizable—on the following page.

Rise and Dine Breakfast boards are a favorite for those who love to linger over a weekend brunch. They’re also popular for morning wedding and baby showers. “I always ask clients their definition of breakfast before I make one of these,” Stephanie says, “because everyone is different.” She notes variations of this board include bagels with spreads and even chicken and waffles. WHAT’S ON THE BOARD
• Red onion, dill, and goat cheese quiche • Croissants • Donut holes • Chocolate mini donuts
• Honey • Variety of fresh seasonal fruit • Blueberry goat cheese
Classic Charcuterie “I abide by the philosophy that there are no set rules when it comes to charcuterie boards,” Stephanie says. “Simply make it with the things you like.” She notes these classic boards are a chance for diners to revisit old favorites and try something new, which makes for a balanced approach. WHAT’S ON THE BOARD
• Colby-Jack cubes • Mozzarella pearls with fresh basil • Merlot cheddar • Onion and chive cheddar • Sharp cheddar • Drunken goat cheese • Traditional goat cheese

PERFECT PAIRINGS
“Margaret is a little bohemian and a little fancy when it comes to her style, and Jake is very outdoorsy,” Stuart says. To this end, the designer mixed traditional with modern and casual with formal to be a true reflection of the couple. “When I found the coffee table, Margaret said it looked like one her family had growing up, and its material reminded me of Jake’s love of nature, so I thought it was a perfect blend of their styles,” the designer adds.
“It had really good bones, it just needed some love,” designer Stuart Thalheimer Davis says of the 1920s Heights cottage she helped homeowners Margaret and Jake King renovate. Jake puts it a little more bluntly. “It was not inhabitable,” he laughs. Luckily, both he and his wife have a passion for houses—he’s a home inspector and owner of Vantage Point Inspections while Margaret is a real estate agent with her family-owned business, The Janet Jones Company. “Since we both go into houses every day as a part of our jobs, we knew what we wanted,” Margaret says. Attracted to a location within walking distance of Margaret’s family, they set to work drawing up plans to turn the fixer-upper into their dream home. To this point, the entire home—both inside and out—came down to the studs. Walls that formerly separated the living room, dining room, and kitchen were removed to create one space that begins at the front door. The couple’s previous home in Jake’s native Heber Springs had an open-concept floor plan and they wanted to recreate this here. “You have to keep your
34 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
space picked up and the dishes clean, but it’s so nice for entertaining,” Margaret says. The couple called on Stuart to help with both the space planning decisions as well as style selections. Inspired by a childhood split between the West Coast and Little Rock, Margaret describes her taste as a blend of bohemian and classic with an eccentric feel. “Overall, they wanted it to be comfortable and casual, but still have some formal aspects, which you can see in the light fixtures and accessories,” Stuart says of the design game plan. Creating an environment that encouraged the family of three to spend their time together was another priority. “With our daughter, Vivienne, being an only child, it’s important to me that she’s right in the mix of things,” Margaret says. Spaces such as the playroom, located adjacent to the kitchen and the family room, encourage this. “I just feel so lucky that we got to do this renovation,” Margaret says. “For the first time, I feel settled and at peace now that we have our little nest.”
AROUND THE TABLE
Located in between the living room and the kitchen, the dining room features a round table with enough room for six people to gather. Artwork by Charlestonbased artist Tori Guglielmi brings color to the otherwise-neutral space and ties it to the vibrant chairs in the nearby kitchen seating area. Acrylic drapery rods and a crystalembellished chandelier add sophistication.

COOKING UP A GOOD TIME
“We both love to cook, so a big island workspace was a must-have,” Margaret says of the centrally located prep area, which also has room to pull up barstools. From the front door, you have a clear line of vision through the living and dining spaces into the kitchen and its back wall, which houses the range and hood, a feature Stuart notes Jake wanted to stand out in the kitchen. Inspired by a seating area in her mother’s kitchen, Margaret set aside space for two comfortable chairs where guests can easily converse with the cook. “Jake went to Cynthia East one day and picked out the fabric for these, and it is spot on,” Stuart says of the vibrant covering.
Thanks to the open-concept plan, many rooms in the home can be seen from one vantage point. Stuart connected them by using navy in multiple places, including the bar area, which was painted to look like a standalone piece of furniture. An antique-mirrored backsplash and a hammered gold sink add polish.

HIS MEETS HERS
The master bedroom is a graceful blend of Jake and Margaret’s styles. For example, Stuart notes the bed and nightstands were selected by Jake and have a more masculine feel, while softer hues and an aviaryinspired scene on the wallpaper lend femininity. The designer maximized space in the master bath, giving the couple a walk-in shower, his-and-her vanities, and a separate water closet. Neutral marbles create a serene, uninterrupted palette that makes the room feel more spacious than its footprint.

GIVE ME BUTTERFLIES
In the couple’s former home, Vivienne’s nursery had a butterfly theme, and they decided to carry this over to her big girl room. A light pink bed skirt with dancing butterflies and art featuring butterfly cutouts speak to this, while a wallpaper patterned with the trail of a butterfly’s fly path covers the ceiling. COLORFUL CHARACTER
A second bath is shared by guests and Vivienne. Stuart notes the light wallpaper “ties back to the home’s blue palette in a softer way.” This is paired with a vibrant ready-made shower curtain, which was customized to cover the full length of the bathtub by adding outdoor fabric to its bottom edge. “We wanted to keep the footprint in here and tried to choose pieces that would go with the original style of the home,” Margaret says. Down the hall, a guest room in a similar palette welcomes out-of-towners for overnight stays.
38 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
THE PLACE TO PLAY
“I love that the playroom is right off the kitchen, so I can keep an eye on Vivienne while I cook dinner,” Margaret says. Stuart worked with a navy couch the couple already had and selected extra-fun fabric for the curtains from VillaNova’s “Picturebook” collection. The couple plans to transition this space to a TV den as their daughter grows. “I was one of five kids, so we were always together and this space allows us to have that, too,” Margaret says.

ROOM FOR GROWTH Modern minimalism and accessibility go hand-in-hand in this Northwest Arkansas family home

Ginny and Matt enjoy breakfast and dancing with (from left) Anders, Hazel, and Lena.
Rather than base cabinetry, everything below the waist in the kitchen is in drawers, including the dishwasher and a second refrigerator, which are easier for Lena to access.
Ginny and Matt Mooney live in a renovated ranch-style home in Fayetteville just blocks from the University of Arkansas campus. The finishes are sleek and modern, the palette as simple as possible—black, white, and wood tones abound, both inside and on the exterior. But inside the walls, it’s a symphony of chatter and laughter, bake-sale prep and Nerf basketball games, and music and dancing. All that activity can be attributed to Anders, 9, Hazel, 10, and Lena, 12, whose communication and motor skills are affected by autism. With this in mind, her parents decided to approach their home renovation and addition project in such a way that would continue to serve Lena as she becomes more independent. “What happens a lot of times with people with disabilities is they live in isolation,” Ginny says. “The world isn’t set up for them like it should be. For our family, most houses would work fine for Hazel and Anders, but we wanted to think more long-term—into adulthood—for Lena.”
August 2019 | athomearkansas.com 41
To that end, Ginny and Matt recruited their neighbor, architect Bradley Edwards, and friend, builder Lucas Cooper—both of whom had worked on projects at the Mooneys’ previous house—to help them create a home truly suited to the family’s needs. There were three main considerations in achieving this: First, all the details of the home, from the drawers in her room to the kitchen and bathroom design, would be chosen with Lena’s needs and her ability to grow more independent in mind—a concept Ginny refers to as “projected independence.” Second, that the home would feel comfortable and safe to Lena. “We think she’s a gift to her community and those around her,” Ginny says. “The easiest way for her to connect with others is in her space. That’s part of the big, open floor plan. If we have a place where people can come over, she’s automatically a part of the action.” Lastly, that the home would not only be accessible for Lena, but also to friends with disabilities in the wider community. “That’s part of why the house is all one story,” Ginny points out, noting that there are no steps at the home’s entrance, either. “A big part of living with autism is that Lena’s communication skills and the way she lives in the world is affected,” Ginny says. “Behaviors are really high. That was the drive behind the decor and neutral color palette. A space that’s cluttered and colorful and has a lot of stuff, can feel really chaotic to someone with autism. Our life as a family already has a lot of energy and chaos,” Ginny laughs. “It’s a beautiful chaos, and I love how colorful our family is. But I did want the house to feel calm and peaceful, to be a place we could all continue to learn and grow.”
42 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
CLEAN KITCHEN DESIGN
It just so happens that many of the aspects of this home that are conducive to accessibility—the open floor plan, the minimal colors and décor, the simple lines and furniture— are suited to Ginny and Matt’s aesthetic. “I love the uniformity of the black and white, but I wanted a pop of warmer wood in there, too” Ginny says, pointing to the open shelving and a wood-wrapped accent shelf as examples. The wood is cypress, the same as the exterior of the house and a nod to Ginny’s family in Louisiana. Sleek black cabinets reach from floor to ceiling, and matching panels cover the refrigerator and dishwasher for a seamless look.
August 2019 | athomearkansas.com 43
OPEN-AIR ESCAPE
At the center of the home’s C-shaped layout is a two-story screened-in deck complete with a lofted “crow’s nest” for the kids. “Because of the trees overhead, it stays shaded even on hot days. We eat almost every meal out there,” Ginny says. After the family moved into the house, Ginny called on her friend Heather of Heather Davidson Design to help style and accessorize the home.
“Every life is worthy of being included. We spent all this time and energy on the house because we think people with disabilities should be welcome everywhere.” —Ginny Mooney, homeowner

MEANINGFUL DECÓR
A piece by local artist Samuel Gray serves as a meaningful focal point in the living room. In 2007, Ginny and Matt founded a nonprofit organization, 99 Balloons, in honor of their first-born son, Eliot, who passed away at 99 days old. “We started the organization because we wanted someplace to live out the belief that every life has worth,” Ginny says. This piece, which depicts a boy drifting into the sky holding balloons, was auctioned at one of the nonprofit’s early fundraisers, where a friend bought it and gifted it to the couple.
MIDCENTURY INFLUENCE
The streamlined style of the Joybird sectional and vintage media console against a far wall in the living room are indicative of the Mooneys’ influences. “Before kids, most of our stuff was less modern and more midcentury modern,” Ginny says. “Matt and I have always loved the magazine Atomic Ranch, and the homes in this neighborhood were all ranch style originally.” “All of my old architecture professors built houses around here back in the day,” adds architect Bradley Edwards. “It’s an interesting neighborhood for architecture history.”
August 2019 | athomearkansas.com 45
PEACE AND CALM
Lena’s room reflects the clean and simple settings where she feels the most relaxed. “She really likes things picked up; there’s a whole wall of storage that can be closed off, but she can access it independently if she wants,” Ginny says. “She has room in there to sit and read books, to dance, and to work with her therapist.” The bed linens are from Ginny’s family business, Gattle’s, a fine-linen company founded in Michigan more than a century ago.
The same black tile used as a backsplash in the kitchen appears in the shower in the master bathroom, and a similar white version is used for the shower in Anders and Hazel’s bathrooms (bottom left), which features dual vanities. Glass panels rather than shower curtains make the rooms appear larger.
46 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
PARENTS’ RETREAT
The house is laid out so that Anders and Hazel’s rooms, their bathroom, and the kitchen and living room are in the original part of the house, and everything else is part of the addition. Bradley drew the master suite and Lena’s room on the other side of the house so that both rooms could have peace and quiet when needed. In the master bedroom, geometric patterns in the light fixtures and pillows play off the vintage rug, a find from a rug shop in an area of Michigan the family visits every summer. “We had the rug before we had anything else in the room. We started with that piece and built around it,” Ginny says. The coverlet and Euro shams are from Gattle’s.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS In Northwest Arkansas, designer Melissa Haynes helps a family create a high-style, high-functioning home WRITER TIFFANY ADAMS PHOTOGR APHER RE T T PEEK

MAKING AN ENTRANCE
The foyer (seen at left) hints at the resounding chic, feminine style seen in each room of the home. “At one of our design meetings, we showed Lauren this light fixture and said, What do you think?” Melissa says of the chandelier, which features handblown glass pieces with a bit of sparkle and movement. “She absolutely loved it, and we knew it was the statement piece the entry needed.” Embroidered floral draperies add to the soft, welcoming effect.
When Lauren
A lex Blass learned they were they put in a call to designer Melissa Haynes to help them plan a sweet nursery for their baby boy. However, as items began to arrive and the installation date neared, they called her back to say they were having second thoughts— not about the nursery design, but about their home. “They lived in a newlywed home in Fayetteville, and the closer it came to time for the baby to born, they felt they needed to be nearer to their offices and in a larger family home,” Melissa explains. The designer was happy to help, setting aside a weekend to see homes with the couple and helping find them a Rogers residence that was still under construction by a local builder. “It was a great floor plan for a young family, and we could see them being happy there for years,” Melissa says. The plan and
expecting their first child,
welcomes guests in a series of formal spaces with wings that extend to a family room and kitchen in one direction and the master suite in the opposite. Since the home was still in the building process, Melissa was able to help the couple select flooring, paint colors, tile, and light fixtures—features that allowed them to personalize the plan. As for furnishings, “they had pieces that were handed down to them and lots of castoffs from their apartments prior to being married,” Melissa says. Thus, they were also able to put the couple’s stamp on the space with furniture, fabrics, and accessories. “When you see her, Lauren reads very chic and glamourous,” Melissa says, “and we wanted the house to reflect that. Everything is very tailored and sophisticated, but the house is also very high functioning and durable, so it’s practical for the entire family.”

FORMALLY HERS
The formal living room was decorated to reflect Lauren’s personal style. “She’s very beautiful and feminine, and we wanted to create a space to speak to this,” Melissa says. “Her husband also really wanted her to be able to bring this out in the design, so we felt this room was a great place to do that.” Hints of pink stand out against a neutral backdrop while an abstract work by Thomasa Seymour hangs over the fireplace. The coffee table was a shapely Anthropologie find that adds sophistication and polish.

HEIRLOOM DINING
Not all of the couple’s furniture was newly purchased following the move: The dining table belonged to Alex’s mother. The meaningful piece allowed the couple to adhere to their budget while still bringing style to the space, specifically in the fabrics and overall palette. “We all loved the striped fabric on the chairs and intended to use it in a big way in this room,” Melissa says. However, they learned it had been discontinued and would only have a couple of yards to incorporate. To make the biggest impact, they used it on the backs of the chairs and paired it with a treated velvet on the front and seat. Plates from the couple’s china pattern add a personal touch to the walls. A durable seagrass rug protects the floor. “Seagrass naturally repels and resists water, so it’s a true workhorse underfoot,” Melissa notes.
An antique mirrored Italianate light fixture adds a touch of glamour to the dining room.

FAMILY RECIPE
One of both the homeowners’ and designer’s favorite personal touches to the house is the backsplash tile in the kitchen. “This fabulous sample from Ann Sacks arrived while we were working on the project. The very next day we showed it to Lauren, and we all knew it was a perfect fit,” Melissa says of the Calacatta marble mosaic tile. In terms of function, a large pantry is hidden behind the wall that houses the range. “This is a great place for Lauren to stash the high chair when guests are coming over, and it keeps all the cooking essentials she needs close at hand,” Melissa says.

CHIC MEETS DURABLE
To ensure the family had both style and comfort, Melissa created a highfunctioning space in the family room. “There’s no chair in here that just looks pretty; everything is working hard,” she says, noting the ottoman was treated to wipe clean while the chairs are covered in Crypton fabric. An abundance of seating was top priority for the family, who wanted to be able to have guests and extended family within earshot of the adjoining kitchen. A wool rug with a subtle animal-print pattern adds comfort while also being capable of discreetly hiding stains.

UNWIND REDEFINED
Hues of blue and purple flow throughout the home, with lilac being most prominent in the master bedroom. “Again, this room is meant to have a glamourous feel, yet be practical,” Melissa says, noting the couple chose a darker bedspread as a dog-friendly option for the furry family members.
A BOY’S DREAM
When his younger brother, Bowen, arrived, Melissa designed a big boy room for the couple’s preschool-aged son, Bennett. “Lauren brought in pictures of a fort-style bed and we found one at RH Baby & Child that was a great fit for the room’s sloped ceilings,” Melissa says. The home’s tailored look carries over to this space where a blend of window-pane plaid (seen on the wallpaper) and stripes create a look fit for a little gentleman. “This is a space that has longevity and can grow with him over time,” the designer adds.
56 At Home in Arkansas | August 2019
SWEETLY SOPHISTICATED
The nursery design Melissa originally created for the couple’s home in Fayetteville was executed in this house. “We ordered more wallpaper to account for the room’s square footage, but everything else worked out perfectly,” she says. The slipcovered glider is stain-treated to stand up to wear and tear, while the daybed has easy-to-wash cotton bedding. The couple’s oldest son started out in this space, which is now home to their 4-month-old baby boy.

Art of Design When Sha Davari was working on a degree in business and accounting from Hendrix College, she never imagined she would end up becoming an interior designer. It was a parttime job with a local designer that opened the door to that possibility. “That’s when I realized I loved making spaces beautiful,” she says.
After working at various furniture showrooms and running her own booth at a furniture market in town, Sha opened her own store, Art of Design, in 2016 in the Riverdale Design District. Since that time, she has already upgraded to a larger location that’s almost twice the size of her previous one. Art of Design stocks
furniture, lighting, rugs, art, and accessories ranging from traditional to contemporary, though overall, the store has Sha’s signature transitional feel. “I like clean lines in a space, and I love gold as an accent color,” she says. She’s also excited about the growing choice in fabrics that provide more durability without
sacrificing style. “Performance and Crypton fabrics are giving our clients a wider range of colors to explore without the fear of stains,” she says. Sha and the team at Art of Design offer complimentary design service, and they are always careful to keep design solutions within their clients’ budgets.

M.N’Teriors
It didn’t take long for Miguel Newberg to realize she wanted to pursue a career in interior design. “As a teenager I did an immersion program one summer and worked with a design firm, and I basically fell in love with it,” she says. Following that experience, Miguel graduated with a degree in interior design and worked for Ethan Allen. “After four and a half years, I decided to venture out on my own,” she says. This year, Miguel celebrates 21 years in business as M.N’Teriors. Miguel describes her personal style as transitional because of her love of pairing traditional furnishings with contemporary art. “I like clean lines, and I like for all of the spaces I design to be functional,” she says. “Every project is unique and should reflect the client’s personality and individual needs. There are a few design trends Miguel is excited to see make their way back into homes: “I love that wallpaper is back in such a big way,” she says. She also appreciates the look of mixed metals and is glad to see the color green showing up in paints, accessories, and fabrics. When it comes to working with clients to assess their wants, needs, and desires for their home design, Miguel says the most important thing is that she listens. “I cater to each client as I would want to be treated,” she says. “I strive to give them the utmost attention that I can.”

Providence Design Sisters Mona Thompson and Talena Ray parlayed their love for all things beautiful into an antiques and interior design business in 2002. Their growing love of interior design prompted them to shift the focus of the business to residential design in 2013, when they opened their first studio and retail store in Little Rock. Since then, Providence Design has
continued to grow in square footage and selection since its inception. Mona and Talena’s experience working with clients in a varied range of styles is why clients seek them out, and scouring varied markets and venues throughout the country for unique furnishings is what sets them apart. It’s the reason Providence Design has
become a destination shopping experience for customers both in and out of the state. While they consult daily on projects of all size, Mona says she and Talena have a “real passion for working with clients from the ground up” on remodel and new construction projects. “We love what we do and really enjoy working on all different kinds of projects,” Talena says.
“It’s just so much fun helping clients make their homes the very best they can be.” As far as current trends, Mona and Talena are currently loving cleaner designs and neutrals mixed with color. “The use of multiple textures adds so much interest, and we are hoping that gold metals don’t fall out of grace anytime soon—we love to mix metals,” Mona says.

Shayla Copas Interiors Since starting her business in 1994, Shayla Copas has seen her company grow into a luxury brand that encompasses design, entertaining, public speaking, and marketing savvy. “If I had to describe my personal style in just two words, it would be ‘Southern glam,’” she says. “In fact, the Design Network named my spot on their network Southern Glam after that style. It’s that place where Old Hollywood glamour and timeless Southern tradition meet.” While Shayla’s style is undeniable, it’s also her ability to deliver projects within the client’s restrictions that has earned her praise both locally and nationally. “Our rigorous project-intake process ensures the end result is an accurate reflection of the client’s tastes, but also has the polish only a professional design firm can provide,” Shayla says. In addition to her accomplishments as a designer, Shayla added “author” to her list of descriptors this spring with the release of her first book, Four Seasons of Entertaining. “For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for entertaining and bringing family and friends together for special occasions,” she says. The book focuses on table settings, recipes, cocktails, and floral arrangements and is available at shaylacopas. com and through Amazon.

Peri-Gay Walker’s love of elaborate holiday decorations led to the opening of her design business, VIPG Designs, in 2012. However, her passion for design began early: “My mom was always very creative and decorated our home beautifully…I think she had a lot to do with inspiring me along the way,” Peri-Gay says. “I took my ‘inherited ability’ and started buying numerous décor, architecture, and style books to educate myself beyond just having good taste,” she says. The designer’s personal style is varied, from old world to casual, French country to most recently, a nod toward modernism. A consistent element for VIPG Designs is a love of glam. Concerning trends, Peri-Gay admires acrylic furniture, blush feminine tones, and velvet, though she states, “that’s never been ‘out’ to me!” Peri-Gay’s devotion to her work is evident. “I love spending time with my clients, love our shopping days, and love getting to know them. Once a project is complete, I truly miss my clients and the spaces we have created together.”

WHAT TYPES OF PROJECTS DO YOU WORK ON?
First, and perhaps foremost, you want to know if your project falls within their scope of business. If you’re looking for a full home remodel and the chosen designer only does paint consultations, you’re likely not a match. Be sure to ask about experience with projects similar to yours and ask to see photos of these completed spaces.

While we’re on the subject, this is also a good time to find out how your designer will charge for their services, if you haven’t previously discussed.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR STYLE AND HOW IT RELATES TO MY TASTE?
If you’ve seen any number of the designer’s projects, you most likely have an idea of his or her overall aesthetic. However, it’s important to get a grasp on how the designer’s style will translate into your home. Talk with him or her about likes and dislikes, while sharing your own preferences.
4
HOW WILL YOU CONVEY YOUR IDEAS AND CAN I MAKE CHANGES TO THE DESIGN CONCEPTS?
It’s a good idea to set expectations for how and when you and the designer will communicate. For example, will the meetings take place in person, or will a lot of the work be done by phone, text, and email? This can help to keep you organized, and you’ll know when to expect updates.
Going back to communication, you’ll want to know how your designer plans to present ideas. Will you receive a presentation or a mood board, or will you go to pick out items in person? Set the expectations for this early on, and be sure to find out how and when you can make changes.

Restructure Design, Inc. After years in the industry in Little Rock, designer Alissa Oates returned to her hometown and founded Restructure Design in 2017. “I have always been interested in fashion, graphic design, and architecture. Interior design brings these together and allows me the opportunity to use my creativity to serve clients,” she says. The Restructure team also includes Rachelle Mann, a project manager whom Alissa says helps keep projects moving forward by handling day-to-day operations as well as assisting with design. “We had previously worked together in the industry, and she is now a vital part
of our team,” Alissa says. “Having her on board gives Restructure the capacity to serve a broader base of clients in the most timely manner.” As a full-service residential remodel and design firm, Restructure walks with clients from the concept of a project all the way through to completion. Noting that renovations and design work can sometimes be a trying process, Alissa desires to simplify the experience for clients. “We like to give clients a realistic expectation of the process, considering timeline and value and what the Restructure team can offer to make projects run smoother,” she says.

The Shade Above Jeremy Carter’s start in the design world goes back to his days growing up in Des Arc. “I have always had a love for design,” he says. “I started at a very young age in a small store in my hometown.” Soon after, he jumped fulltime into the home design industry. After several years as head designer at a development company in Missouri, Jeremy moved back to his home state to get plugged into the design community here. In November 2017, he bought Little Rock lighting store The Shade Above. “I have always loved lamps. Design is all about the details, and lights sometimes add that extra needed detail to a room.” As for his own style, Jeremy is drawn to eclectic, collected designs. “I like something that looks like it has evolved over time,” he says. “I love a mixture of textures, and a neutral room with great art and accessories—and lamps, of course!”

Donna Hanna With a father who was a developer and builder in Northwest Arkansas, Donna Hanna was raised with an interest in design. “Being around his building and remodeling is what sparked my love for interior design,” she says. “I would help him pick out paint colors and finishes for his homes. One thing led to another and people started calling me to help them with their projects.” After working for two and a half years as the in-house designer at Christopher Allen Décor in Fayetteville, Donna took over as the owner and re-opened the much-loved store in a new location on Crossover
Road. In this revamped showroom, clients can get a sense of Donna’s style, which she describes as a mix of antiques with contemporary. “My general rule of thumb is one antique in every room,” she says. “I don’t strive to be trendy—it’s not practical or affordable for my clients.” Donna works with clients to find statement pieces and one-of-a-kind accessories, custom artwork, and lighting that speaks to the homeowner’s individual style. “My personal design philosophy is to provide high-end products and service. I take into account each client so the result is a space they are proud of and love living in.”

Lamb’s Interior Design Designer Mara Lamb Malcolm’s family legacy is the cornerstone of Lamb’s Interior Design, as her family has been in the construction, real estate, and design business for over 70 years. “My mother was born to create beauty,” Mara says. “My childhood was full of beauty, amazing furnishings, and constant design stimulation and inspiration. I became a designer through growing up with and learning from Retha Wyatt Lamb.” Attending markets with her mother at a young age led her to work as a design assistant in high school and college and later take over the design portion of the family business. Rooted in timeless foundation pieces, a space by Lamb’s Interior Design is sure to feature exquisite fabrics, vibrant art, and family history. “With my clients, I am always very interested in the history of their existing pieces,” Mara says. “I love pairing antiques with modern art, sculpture and fixtures. The juxtaposition is magic.” The designer believes in “homes with a soul.” Lamb’s Interior Design stresses the importance of classic, timeless homes in contrast to trendiness. Case in point, homes designed by her mother three decades ago are still relevant today, only requiring minimal freshening to update.

in stitches Like many crafts now practiced in leisure, embroidery was once a widely known, practical everyday skill. Even those who didn’t need to be able to sew, tailor, or mend their own clothing picked up a needle and thread for fun. Want examples? How about this: Queen Elizabeth I would take part socially with other world leaders. And word has it that Hollywood heart throb Henry Fonda turned to the craft to relax between takes.
