I recently went shopping with a dear friend who was in town for a few days. He’s been working on a remodel in Mississippi for months, and I joined him on his search through several of our local showrooms for that final finishing layer of accessories. As we wound through the aisles of one antiques store, I found myself gravitating toward the same finds I’m always eager to collect: vintage paint-by-numbers, wooden candleholders, and anything made of wicker, to name a few. “What is your deal with wicker?” my friend asked when he caught me eyeing a particular piece. (He knows me all too well!) While I can’t put my finger on where this affinity for any of the above came from, I know these things in my home make me happy. “I don’t know, but I have it under control now,” I assured him. It’s true. Ever since I figured out my style formula, my house has felt more intentional and cohesive. What is a “style formula,” you ask? Here’s mine: varying wood tones plus a vintage rug, some blue-and-white accessories, brass finishes, books, plants, and a mix of new and old art. Making sure every space has something from that list has helped me create balance within each area and continuity from room to room. While some of us don’t know exactly how to describe our style, we know what we like when we see it; the trick is making it all work together. If you’re struggling with that part, try figuring out your style formula. You might see the big picture more clearly. Our Find Your Style Issue is all about helping readers identify those things that help your house feel like home, whether you lean traditional, contemporary, or somewhere in between. I wish you the best in finding—and mastering—your style!

What’s New? Material selections and inspirations for Belle & Blush's Heights location.

BELLE & BLUSH LITTLE ROCK

In June, Belle & Blush announced a second location would be coming soon in the Heights. Owned by Merry Kline, the skincare and cosmetics store also provides makeup and esthetician services. Merry opened Belle & Blush in The Promenade in 2013 and expanded that store in 2018. Now, the additional location will be housed in the historic Heights Theatre, with Ashley Childers at the helm of interior design and Ashley’s husband, Garrett Childers of Wiggins and Childers, on board as the contractor. Ashley describes the vision for the store as “modern, feminine, and chic.” “This design might just be the most epic before and after of all time,” Ashley says, listing original brick, clean architectural lines, and the building’s projector openings— from its time as a working movie theater—as some of the details she’s been most excited about. “The final product will be a space that mixes the innate character of a historical building with the look and feel of a luxury retail experience,” Ashley says. Find more information at belleandblush.com, and visit athomearkansas.com/blog for more from Ashley about the design.

THE NEST In late summer, Little Rock entrepreneurs Erin Hohnbaum and Natalie Ghidotti announced the launch of The Nest, a “coworking community and social club built by women, for women,” according to its website. As the owner of women’s boutique E.Leigh’s and public relations firm Ghidotti Communications, respectively, the two came up with the concept for a work-meets-play networking space for local women in the heart of the South Main district. “We wanted to stay near downtown for The Nest, as well as be in a vibrant and booming area that pulled together a diverse base of residents,” Natalie says. “SoMa is definitely a special neighborhood that has so many exciting things happening, and we wanted to ensure our members are part of that.” The building at 112 W. Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive had already been renovated by Carol Worley before Erin and Natalie decided to make this The Nest’s home. Designer Jill White of Jill White Designs is taking the lead on the interiors, which play off The Nest’s name and values. “Jill is helping us create a special and nurturing place between home and work where Little Rock women can connect and grow together,” Erin says. The Nest is slated to open in October. Visit thenestlr. com for more information, including membership details and upcoming events.

Style Upgrade Kitchen Tune-Up helps a Maumelle couple modernize their kitchen

hen Felecia Pleis married her husband, Ron, in 2008 and moved into his Maumelle home, the two made a few updates to the house to make it feel like theirs. However, she had bigger plans for the kitchen. “I love to entertain, and I really like dishes so I needed more storage; plus, I felt like the colors were dated and ready for a refresh,” Felecia says. Years later, with a vision in mind, the couple visited Susan Johnson at Kitchen Tune-Up to get advice on achieving their desired style and storage goals while maximizing their budget. Reworking the floor plan was not an option, so the team got creative to give the couple more storage. For example, the Pleises opted to replace the upper cabinetry and extend it to the ceiling. They kept the existing base cabinets and reconfigured several, including those in the island, to become deep roll-out drawers that are easily accessible. “Before there was a lot of dead space and things would get lost easily, but now everything has a home,” Felecia says, noting many of the cabinets and drawers also have added organization features for items such as baking sheets and spices. Ron had installed new granite countertops shortly before the couple were married and they were eager to retain these—as they were still in good condition. Working with this palette, Felecia says she was “drawn to a tuxedo look with darker, stained cabinets on the bottom and lighter, painted ones at the top.” Updated appliances, including a new hood and smart range that can be operated from the couple’s phone or iPad, complete the renovation. “This is something I’ve wanted to do since I first stepped foot in this room, and we couldn’t be happier with the end result,” Felecia says. “This kitchen really highlights the many options you have when it comes to a makeover. You don’t always have to pull everything out and start from scratch; you can look at each element and make decisions based on time, budget, and style to get what you envision,” Susan says.

CENTRAL PERK

The Pleises added one wall of cabinetry in a space that previously held an armoire. They were concerned about finding a slab of granite to match their existing countertops; however, a trip to All Natural Stone proved to be fruitful when they found a perfect-match remnant. The space is now a destination for coffee thanks to a single-cup brewer and an Italian Elektra espresso coffee machine, which Ron discovered and first purchased while stationed abroad.

One of Felecia’s favorite features of the renovation is the built-in organization, such as the single-use coffee pod holder inside the cabinetry drawer.

2

Glass subway tiles in a soft gray hue cover the backsplash area and extend up the wall around the kitchen sink, which Susan notes makes the room feel taller and more spacious.

Sleek gold hardware was chosen to coordinate with the existing countertops as well as the mix of stained and painted cabinets. “It gives such a fresh, updated look,” Susan says.

AUTUMN ENTERTAINING

Take It Outside Designer Shayla Copas puts her signature spin on a casual backyard gathering

WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK

ith the execution of two Arkansas governor’s inaugural balls and a book on entertaining under her belt, interior designer Shayla Copas has put her mark on the professional party planning scene. More often, however, she enjoys having loved ones over for smaller, casual gatherings at home—especially in the fall, when cooler weather invites everyone to gravitate outdoors. “The backyard has traditionally been an area we reserve for family events. It’s really more of an intimate space,” Shayla says. Here, she created a tablescape incorporating some of her favorite seasonal accents while drawing from the aqua scheme of the outdoor area’s year-round palette. “I love hydrangeas, and with bringing in the blues to this palette, I wanted to include them by mixing them with the more autumn colors,” she says. “When we think of fall, we look to richer tones like burgundy and gold, but I think blue also has a place in fall; it’s a little more unexpected.” Read on for Shayla’s take on entertaining made easy.

5 WAYS TO SET THE SCENE

1

CURATE A COLOR PALETTE

Gold flatware, orange-tinged mercury glass, and rattan chargers bring classic fall tones to the tablescape, while pops of blue create contrast and tie the tablescape to the chair cushions and pool beyond.

3

2

GO HIGH AND LOW

A combination of low floral arrangements and a tall, slender centerpiece add to the ambience without inhibiting dinner table conversation. “I love the woodsy feel of those grasses, and the river rock gives it a casual flair while keeping it grounded,” Shayla says.

3

INCORPORATE THE LANDSCAPE 4

For an outdoor gathering, the landscape and seasonal plantings are integral to the décor. Ornamental cabbage, ‘Silver Frost’ artemisia, ivy, and pansies around ‘Northern White’ cedar trees in concrete planters carry throughout the area’s different zones. .

4

KEEP IT COZY

5

A corner of Shayla’s outdoor living space features a firepit and four comfortable swivel chairs, perfect for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers. “I always make sure to have blankets available for guests to grab as needed, especially for a casual gettogether like this.”

5

ADD SOME FLAVOR

Batch cocktails are an easy way to serve a signature drink to a crowd. For this gathering, Shayla crafted an Orchard Fizz —named for the apple juice and cider that give the beverage a crisp autumn flavor.

Visit athomearkansas.com/blog for the recipe for Shayla’s Orchard Fizz.

Fresh produce is available at Wilson’s weekly farmer’s market at The Grange every Wednesday of the year.

Stretching from Clay to Chicot counties along the eastern border of the state, the Delta is home to some of Arkansas’s most compelling communities. Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a long-weekend stay, there’s something for everyone. WILSON (wilsonarkansas.com) has been a recent favorite for visitors near and far thanks to its revitalization over the past 10 years. From the Tudor-style buildings of its town square to seasonal flowers brimming at Wilson Gardens, everything about this charming town is picturesque. The Grange is a constant site of special events, including a Harvest Dinner on Oct. 16 (as part of the monthly Wilson Wine Experience) and Wilson Harvest Festival on Oct. 23, an all-day event featuring craft booths, food trucks, and live music. JONESBORO (jonesboro.org), one of the largest

cities in the region, is constantly buzzing with college town excitement thanks to Arkansas State University. Stroll along Main Street and the downtown area to explore local restaurants and art galleries that give the neighborhood its character. Meanwhile, the Lower Delta is where outdoorsmen head during hunting season. Waterfowl flock to the abundant wetlands, which is why the region—specifically Stuttgart—is known as the “Duck Capital of the World.” If hunting is not your particular passion, you can experience the area’s farmland through historic landmarks such as LAKEPORT PLANTATION (lakeport. astate.edu) in Lake Village. Tours of the site inform visitors about the Greek Revival home’s complex history. Read on for our favorite places to shop, dine, visit, and stay in Jonesboro and the Delta.

Jonesboro’s THE EVERYDAY CHEF (theeverydaychef.net) is a paradise for those who love to cook, bake, or entertain. Shop both fine china and, as the name suggests, everyday serving pieces as well as kitchen gadgets and wedding registries for local lovebirds. Opened in 2019, BLYTHEVILLE BOOK COMPANY (blythevillebookcompany.com) offers more than shelves filled with your next favorite reads; they also stock racks of vinyl records for music enthusiasts while a café serves coffee and happy hour libations. In Wilson, WHITE’S MERCANTILE (whitesmercantile.com) is a modern take on the old-fashioned general store, filled with a curated collection of gifts, apparel, and Southern-inspired home goods.

DINE

(rootsrestaurant303.com) in downtown Jonesboro offers a twist on Southern cuisine; in keeping with their motto, “Kitchen. Culture. Community,” the menu is a fusion of traditional Southern favorites with Ecuadorian influence to reflect its owners’ backgrounds. Located right across from Centennial Bank Stadium (home of the Red Wolves), JTOWN’S GRILL (jtownsgrill.com) is the perfect pre-game or post-win celebration spot. The pub also offers “Tailgater Specials” to-go to feed up to 30 hungry fans. In Wilson, the namesake WILSON CAFÉ (eatatwilson.com) serves a refined take on the classic diner, from hearty brunch offerings to steak, seafood, and an extensive wine list for dinner. (sadcoak.com) keeps it simple: chicken or beef pelmeni (a dumpling of Russian origin) and potato pierogies, both local favorites in the owner’s native Alaska. For traditional American salads and sandwiches, head to The Cookie Basket (501-827-8803), and be sure to order a fresh homemade cookie or oatmeal cream pie for dessert. Around the corner is Doorframes (shopdoorframes.com), a gift store with everything from jewelry and accessories to home décor, baby gifts, and gourmet foods.

move was not on the radar for Dana and Brian Barrilleaux until a burst water heater and the cleanup it entailed stirred the possibility. As longtime residents of Conway, they loved the area and wanted to find a home they could enjoy for years to come. After reaching out to a friend about the availability of houses for sale in a golf course neighborhood, they met builder Rex Lovelady and his wife, Stephanie, who would soon be putting their home on the market. “Dana really fell in love with this house immediately,” Brian says. “We came over on a Friday night to see it, and by Sunday we were making steps to purchase it,” he recalls. While the process transpired, the couple began to consider the interiors of their new home. “Brian and I are opposites when it comes to decorating, so we knew early on we would need a designer to help pull the house together,” Dana says. A friend recommended Jayson Cain of Jayson Cain Interiors, and Dana recalls immediately being drawn to his style upon first visiting his Little Rock shop. Since the home had recently been built, there were no structural updates necessary, but the

Dana and Brian Barrilleaux in their home’s sitting room.

WARMING UP

While the kitchen was in pristine condition when the Barrilleauxes purchased the home, Jayson suggested changing out silver hardware and faucets for rich, satin brass options. A neutral palette connects the space to the adjoining dining room and family room. “We were not used to an open-concept home, but Jayson made it all flow and we’ve come to love it,” Brian says.

Barrilleauxes knew Jayson could bring their style and character to the house. As is his practice, the designer visited the couple’s previous home to see which pieces were dear to them and what could be used in the new space. “I love traditional style in the sense of found objects,” Jayson says. “My goal is always to start with these 17th and 18th century pieces as the foundation; and, overall, my aesthetic is to use large pieces but fewer of them,” he says. “For this house, I really

wanted to up the ante on its look and give it a refined European presence.” At every turn, the home is now filled with conversation-starting finds, from the antique bleached wood sideboard at the front door to the coffee table in the family room made from remnants of an 18th century piano. “It’s awesome to be able to salvage a piece and then turn it into something that is both beautiful and functional today,” Jayson says.

GRACEFUL & INVITING

In the living room, upholstered sofas and chairs with nailhead trim provide a comfortable place for catching up on television shows, while pieces such as the coffee table and an LED crystal chandelier add polish. Underfoot, a wool sisal rug is a practical selection that can stand up to everyday wear.

In the sitting room, a reproduction of a European lantern hangs near a bookcase constructed using an antique French colonial topper.

IN BLOOM

Jayson outfitted one of the downstairs guest bedrooms with a custom nailhead-bordered headboard and luxurious Lili Alessandra linens and throw pillows. A large-scale botanical work creates a colorful focal point.

ENCHANTING OUTDOORS

The outdoor dining area, which has a view of the neighborhood golf course’s 12th fairway, is a favorite spot for relaxation and entertaining. Here, an expansive table offers seating for 10, while a fountain softly bubbles in the background. The couple, who have three sons and four grandchildren between them, have hosted everything from impromptu gatherings to Christmas dinner under the pergola.

October 2021 | athomearkansas.com 49

NEUTRAL GROUND

In the master bedroom, Jayson employed a symphony of neutral fabrics and textures to create a graceful retreat. An antique Venetian mirror hangs over the center of the bed and is flanked by a series of framed botanicals above the bedside tables on both sides.

Feminine & FUN Harper Howey Interiors helps a client personalize her Rogers home with transitional-style furnishings and accessories hen Kimberly Harper’s client found this Rogers home, it had a lot going for it, including a great location and a recently remodeled interior. It lacked just one thing—personalization. Having helped the client with a previous residence, Kimberly knew she could blend classic and contemporary furnishings to give this one a stylish, feminine flair. “A lot of the pieces she had did not fit the house, either style-wise or in terms of functionality,” Kimberly says. With a colorful palette and whimsical accents as directives, Kimberly looked for key pieces that would lend a curated feel. For example, in the master bedroom the bed’s scalloped edge is a nod to a traditional style as well as the ladylike influence seen throughout the house. In contrast, the room’s accents, including abstract works by Arkansas artist Allison Hobbs and geometric porcelain lamps, have a more contemporary feel. “She had a lot of navy and white pieces in her previous house but wanted to bring in more color—which I loved,” Kimberly says. The pops of coral and green as well as a wider range of blue hues also added to the home’s transitional design. “This is a look that is in line with our overall style, too,” Kimberly says. “We love to mix more modern, contemporary pieces with traditional ones to create interest and make a house unique to its owner.”

FOR WORK AND PLAY

The upstairs game room is a multifunctional space that doesn’t skimp on style. During the pandemic, the owner’s two grown children, who both live out of state, came to visit and work from the home for weeklong stretches. The room proved to be invaluable during this period with the leather game table transforming into a desk and the lounge area becoming a popular place for downtime. A mix of patterned fabrics and contemporary-style artwork keep the look youthful and whimsical.

THE GATHERING SPACE

Whether it’s hosting friends for a football watch party or family during the holidays, the living room was designed to accommodate a crowd. Kimberly immediately knew the long, narrow space, which is located adjacent to the dining room, would function best with two sitting areas. The first is focused around the hearth and television, while a second conversation spot is positioned against the back wall. A navy double-sided settee separates the spaces, providing seating for both areas. Underfoot, the continuous flow of a sisal rug unifies the room.

The small dining room nearby lacked the space for a buffet, so Kimberly tucked one into the living room to keep serving pieces close at hand. Its dark burled wood contrasts with the washed oak finish on the table for a harmonious pairing of traditional and contemporary pieces.

October 2021 | athomearkansas.com 55

The midcentury modern-style dining table, which fits the room beautifully, was purchased from the previous owner and paired with colorful artwork and upholstered chairs to add an air of lightheartedness.

“We love to mix more modern, contemporary pieces with traditional ones to create interest and make a house unique to its owner.” —Kimberly Harper, designer

Kimberly added polished barstools and a pair of watercolors by local artist Ashley Saer to the kitchen.

56 At Home in Arkansas | October 2021

Harper Howey

Kimberly felt the owner’s downstairs office needed a bold statement piece to contrast with the existing wood cabinetry, so she covered the walls in “Kingdom Parade” by Thibaut. “I really played off the existing light fixture to give the room a tribal look,” she says. A piece by Little Rock potter Kelly Edwards hangs over the desk area.

October 2021 | athomearkansas.com 57

RESTFUL RETREAT

As with many colorful homes, the master suite took on a more neutral, subdued palette but retained its girlish charm in a dusty rose accent color. “Here, we wanted to use a pink but not make it overly feminine,” Kimberly notes. Deep chests serve as bedside tables, providing plenty of concealed storage for books and tablets, while a pastel needlepoint rug and antelope-print bench bring style and visual interest.

Southern Made

MODERN

Architect Adam Day creates a contemporary family home on the banks of the Arkansas River

TRADITIONAL INFLUENCE

Adam’s primary challenge was fusing his contemporary approach with the neighborhood’s architectural standards, which are informed by traditional Southern styles. The final design is what Adam dubs a “double barrel trot gun;” a central hallway connects two wings, much like a dogtrot house, while each wing resembles a shotgun-style home. “You don’t get more traditional or Southern than that,” he says.

WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK STYLIST STEPH SMITH

“Snowbound” by SherwinWilliams

“E

very architect has their architect story,” Adam Day says when asked what first drew his interest to the subject. “I was in ninth grade geometry class, and my teacher had us design our dream house. We had to draw it out using grid paper and build a model, and it was due the Friday before spring break. I went to him and said, ‘I’m really enjoying this, can I spend more time on it over spring break and present it when I get back?’” Upon his return to school, Adam delivered an impressive 3D model made of museum board, a profound contrast with his classmates’ popsicle stick creations. Several decades later, Adam is living out his childhood dream as a partner at Little Rock’s AMR Architects while residing in one of his own designs with his wife, Amanda, and their 2-year-old, Eleanor. After several years in the Capital City, he and Amanda decided to build new with the help of Summerwood Homes in North Little Rock’s riverside Rockwater Village. “When we lived in midtown, we would load up our bikes and head to the Big Dam Bridge and ride the trail over to this side of the river,” Amanda says. “We saw the

neighborhood getting built up and knew we would love being right here on the trail. It’s important to me that our daughter grows up spending time outside, and there’s no better place for us to have that kind of access.” Consequently, when they started planning the house, the focus of the view outdoors was of prime importance. “The sight overlooking the river is too good to ignore, and that was really the start of the design,” Adam says. He worked through several iterations before arriving at the home’s final form; along the way, each version—including the final design—incorporated as much glass as possible to take advantage of the views and filter in natural light. Once they were in the construction phase, the Days kept the finishes and furnishings streamlined to complement the home’s contemporary style. “Part of modern design is stripping away unnecessary ornamentation, and while there’s some design theory with that for minimalism and contemporary homes, I don’t think it’s a purposeful thing for us; we just don’t like a lot of clutter,” Adam says. “Having clean, functional spaces is something we both strive for.”

October 2021 | athomearkansas.com 61

The staircase was inspired by the home of the late architect Luis Barragán, which Adam toured while studying abroad in Mexico City.

62 At Home in Arkansas | October 2021

BALANCING ACT

Adam and Amanda were intentional about creating an inviting, welcoming air while also keeping everything streamlined. The warm wood tone seen on the home’s exterior carries into the house, where it plays a key role in offsetting the white walls and concrete floors downstairs. Plush area rugs define each zone, and black accents help move the eye throughout the open floor plan.

October 2021 | athomearkansas.com 63

THOUGHTFUL PLANNING

In the kitchen, the Days employed a mix of low-cost Ikea and custom white oak cabinetry to create an eye-catching, hard-working space that was also cost-effective. “It took a little longer to figure out, but it provides those clean lines and allowed us to spend money elsewhere,” Amanda says. The vent hood is incorporated seamlessly into the upper cabinets while a geometric, textured tile adds subtle interest to the backsplash.

64 At Home in Arkansas | October 2021

SLEEK RETREAT

The master bath mimics the home’s overall shotgun-style construction, with the tub in the front and shower in the rear near a walk-in closet. Adam was mindful to place this room on an exterior wall where an abundance of natural light can fill the space through windows at varying heights. Chrome finishes add polish to the space. In the adjoining bedroom, leftover pine from the ceilings and home’s exterior was used to make a shelf over the bed. Adam’s father, Dan, created the painting inspired by the view from the guest room upstairs.

PATTERNS WE LOVE

Divine Damask It’s hard to imagine that a pattern popular in the Middle Ages is still relevant—and esteemed—in today’s design world; however, that’s just the case for damask. Dating back as early as 300 B.C. in China, damask takes its name from Damascus, a city that was a common trading stop along the Silk Road. In its purest form, it is produced on silk with the ornate, deftly created pattern rising out of a monochromatic background. In more contemporary interpretations, the elaborate motif can be found on a variety of fabrics from linen to cut velvet, making it a versatile and graceful addition to any home’s décor. All fabrics available through Designer Effects, Little Rock, designereffects.net
