I recently went shopping with a dear friend who was in town for a few days. He’s been working on a remodel in Mississippi for months, and I joined him on his search through several of our local showrooms for that final finishing layer of accessories. As we wound through the aisles of one antiques store, I found myself gravitating toward the same finds I’m always eager to collect: vintage paint-by-numbers, wooden candleholders, and anything made of wicker, to name a few. “What is your deal with wicker?” my friend asked when he caught me eyeing a particular piece. (He knows me all too well!) While I can’t put my finger on where this affinity for any of the above came from, I know these things in my home make me happy. “I don’t know, but I have it under control now,” I assured him. It’s true. Ever since I figured out my style formula, my house has felt more intentional and cohesive. What is a “style formula,” you ask? Here’s mine: varying wood tones plus a vintage rug, some blue-and-white accessories, brass finishes, books, plants, and a mix of new and old art. Making sure every space has something from that list has helped me create balance within each area and continuity from room to room. While some of us don’t know exactly how to describe our style, we know what we like when we see it; the trick is making it all work together. If you’re struggling with that part, try figuring out your style formula. You might see the big picture more clearly.
