PHOTOGRAPHY: RETT PEEK

yes!

Putting together my first issue of Weddings in Arkansas felt a little like planning my own wedding: Where to even begin in picking the right flowers, the perfect cake, the best invitation suite, that wow-ing gown? But this time, luckily, I didn’t have to narrow it down to just one of each—which made this task arguably more fun. Our team got to bring some of our wildest wedding-planning dreams to life, including a succulent-inspired celebration (page 11) and bridal fashion fit for a fairytale princess (page 25). We were also so inspired by the many ways in which our Real Weddings brides and grooms infused their celebrations with personality. Whether that meant donning a beloved older sister’s veil (page 48), coordinating the color scheme around a jeweltoned fruit (page 52), or finding the “cutest sparkly heel” for the big day (page 44), these couples remind us that it’s the little things—the details that maybe only you and your soon-to-be-spouse will notice—that really matter. If you’re reading this and planning for your own wedding, we hope you’ll find something here that sparks an idea to fill in a blank on your ever-growing to-do list. Remember, though, this part is all just for fun; the most important decision was the one you made when you said “yes.” DIGITAL EDITION

Best wishes!

SHAYLA COPAS INFUSES A WEDDING-WEEKEND TRADITION WITH HER SIGNATURE STYLE

When Shayla Copas started planning this rehearsal dinner, she knew exactly where she wanted to have it: her friends’ recently renovated farmhouse in west Little Rock. “The inspiration was a farm-to-table yet elegant feel,” Copas says. “I wanted it to feel magical yet grounded.” By setting luxe accents against the location’s wooden tables, tall ceilings, and exposed beams, Copas created a polished and inviting atmosphere that complemented the rustic beauty of the venue.

DECADENT DETAILS

Gilded wine glasses, vintage china, and monogrammed linens elevated the feel of the early evening farmhouse dinner, while high and low floral arrangements of hydrangeas, tulips, succulents, and roses filled the tables with fresh color.

Birthday Surprise

MEANT-TO-BE MEETING “Even though it is silly and cliché to say, I remember meeting Chelsea for the first time like it was yesterday. Honestly, if there is such a thing as true love at first sight, then that is what happened for me,” Nick says of the first time he and his future bride laid eyes on one another at a post-Christmas gathering of friends. Lucky for him, Chelsea gave him her number that night and the two began dating shortly thereafter.

36 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall/Winter 2017

For Chelsea’s birthday, Nick planned a day of activities for her to enjoy, including a massage followed by a picnic at the Dallas Arboretum. When the couple found an ideal spot, they spread out their blanket and Nick told Chelsea he had one more surprise for her. He dropped to one knee and popped the question, to which she immediately said “yes.” “I have never ever felt like that in my life, and I’m pretty sure it was the first time I ever cried tears of pure joy!” Chelsea recalls.

Prior to meeting Nick, Chelsea had envisioned being married by a lake in her hometown. However, after meeting his mom and stepdad and seeing their beautiful home—Autumns Ridge, which is also a popular Northwest Arkansas wedding venue—she knew they were meant to be married there. “I fell in love with it, and it quickly became one of my ‘happy places,’” Chelsea says. It was also special that Nick’s mom and stepdad, Lee Anne and Mark Henry, were married on the property.

Chelsea grew up in Rockwall, Texas, and the couple currently lives in Dallas. Both Chelsea and Nick are big fans of Tex-Mex food and decided to bring a bit of The Lone Star State to Arkansas. “We knew we wanted to do something different, and I loved the idea of having the food be interactive,” the bride says. “We had a chef from Table Mesa [a Bentonville restaurant] onsite grilling the meat and fish in front of everyone for their tacos. We also did an open bar with margaritas as our signature drink. Everything was amazing!” In addition, they also had chefs from Fayetteville’s Wasabi create sushi rolls—another favorite of the couple’s—during the cocktail hour.

Tradition in the Making

Chelsea’s uncle, Dave Arundel, married the couple. “He married my mom and dad as well as my sister and brotherin-law, so it was very meaningful and special for him to marry us, too!” Chelsea says.

Wedding Day Must-Have

“I had to have good food and drinks! I have been to many weddings and those are the two things people always remember, Chelsea says.

MAY 27, 2017 // BENTONVILLE BONDING IN BOSTON

Dear Details

Emily is from Bentonville, while James, whose dad is an economic diplomat, has lived around the globe. Luckily for them, a common cause and post brought the two together in Boston. They met while working at a high school for at-risk students during a year of service with AmeriCorps.

Both Emily and James’s grandparents were a part of the wedding in several unique ways. Emily’s grandfather hand-made the couple a wooden ring box, which they used in the ceremony. James’s mother embroidered a handkerchief that belonged to his grandmother for Emily to have during the ceremony, while a brooch from Emily’s late paternal grandmother adorned her bouquet. Finally, the bride’s maternal grandmother contributed her famous “road runner” chocolate bars to the sweet selection at the reception.

Aisle Serenade Rather than a first dance song, Emily opted to have her favorite ballad played as she walked down the aisle. Accompanied by a string quartet, Chris Brown, a lifelong friend of the bride, performed Kishi Bashi’s “Manchester,” which Emily describes as a “hauntingly beautiful love song.” When she first heard it in 2011, before she knew who she would marry or when she would wed, she recalls immediately thinking she would have to incorporate this song into her wedding.

FUN FACTORS Emily and James had a number of activities for guests to enjoy following the nuptials, including yard games, an Emily-andJames-themed crossword puzzle, Mad Libs, and an ice cream truck ready to scoop up attendees’ favorite treats.

PERSONALIZED VOWS “We really took care to make the ceremony our own,” Emily and James say. “We are both reflective and intentional people, and to us the wedding was very much about celebrating what brought our relationship to that point both as individuals and as a couple.” Emily read a quote from her favorite movie, When Harry Met Sally, and James recited a portion of a love letter that writer Leo Tolstoy had written to his wife.

A Ring to It

Prior to proposing, James talked with Emily’s parents. He did not yet have a ring and thought that Emily might like to choose her own. For the proposal, Emily’s mother gave him a ring that she had been given when Emily was born. Today, she enjoys wearing both rings together to honor their engagement.

SWEET ENDING

APRIL 22, 2017 // LITTLE ROCK Southern Fare FINDING THE ONE Nick proposed to Ann on the couple’s one-year anniversary of dating. He led her to believe they were going to dinner to celebrate. However, when she arrived at his downtown Little Rock condo, he asked her to join him on the rooftop for a drink. Once there, he popped the question. A number of their friends were waiting anxiously in the room across the hallway, ready to toast the bride- and groom-to-be.

“We wanted to stick with Southern-style food, and The Capital Hotel’s selection made this so easy,” Ann says. “We created our own menu and had a mini tasting. This was definitely one of the highlights of the planning process.” The menu included miniature ham biscuits with jam, fried green tomatoes, and bacon bites—all of which were passed before dinner. Next, a cocktail buffet featuring pork sliders, pimento cheese, shrimp and grits, and deviled eggs was opened for guests to enjoy. Additionally, a carving station served beef tenderloin, potatoes, and green beans while a separate station created chicken-anddumplings gnocchi.

To complement the main course, guests had the option of the groom’s cake, which was a cheesecake with numerous toppings from which to choose, or a classic white cake with buttercream icing that served as the bride’s cake.

Their Advice to Engaged Couples “Enjoy this special time of celebration together and focus on the things that really matter to both of you.”

Ann and Nick’s Wedding Day Must-Haves

“We had to have a big bride’s cake, plenty of food, and I had to have my wedding day shoes. They had the cutest sparkly heel,” Ann says.

Kyleigh and Alex met as freshmen at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway in 2011. During the first week of school, they were randomly assigned to be lab partners in biology. “We were both science majors and had several classes together, which gave me an excuse to text him about study guides or chemistry problems. Our study sessions were not terribly productive as we would always end up laughing and talking about basically anything besides biology,” Kyleigh recalls.

Alex and Kyleigh dated for more than four years before Alex popped the question. During a discussion about their future, he had once told Kyleigh they would be engaged by the start of 2016. However, she began to wonder as she watched Thanksgiving, her birthday, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve pass in 2015. True to his word, Alex surprised her on New Year’s Day by getting down on one knee in front of the Little Rock skyline. The couple’s friends and family were there to celebrate the engagement and even had a party planned following the big event.

Kyleigh knew that she wanted white flowers, lots of greenery, and candles as part of the wedding décor. “I love trying new trends and fun colors, but at the end of the day I am always going to lean toward classic looks and neutral colors,” the bride says. “My whole vision was a wedding that we could look back on for years and not think, ‘Oh, no! Why did we pick that?’ I have to be honest though, my vision wouldn’t have been a reality without AnneClaire’s [of Anne-Claire Allen Planning & Design] talent for bringing things to life.”

Kyleigh wore her husband’s grandmother’s fur coat following the ceremony. She also donned her sister’s veil, which “any little sister knows was basically a dream come true,” she says.

Their Advice to Engaged Couples

“Take time to prepare for your marriage. In the end, the wedding is just a day while your marriage is for the rest of your lives. Also, give lots of grace—to each other, yourself, and all of your friends and family who are investing their time into the planning.

Kyleigh’s Favorite Memory of the Day

“Aside from actually getting married, my favorite memory of the day was having the DJ play Alex’s favorite song from college, ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ by Eddie Money, as the last song. Alex got so excited, and we had all the people we love most dancing and laughing with us as we closed out the night.”

POHLNER BOGNER FEBRUARY 18, 2017 // FAYETTEVILLE JUST BEACHY A spring break trip to Destin, Florida, with mutual friends brought Tori and Andrew together. “We spent a fun night at AJ’s Oyster Bar and wound up making the 14-hour drive home together. We’ve been inseparable ever since,” Tori says. Four years later on another beach in the Dominican Republic, Andrew asked for Tori’s hand in marriage.

A special secret she shares with her Zeta sorority sisters FLAVORFUL FAVORS Andrew’s uncle distills moonshine in Kansas. He created sample-sized bottles, complete with labels that read, “I love you more than the moon loves to shine!” for the couple to give to guests as they departed.

Fruitful Endeavor “I embraced pomegranates and ran with them as far as I could,” the bride says of her wedding day décor. “From cake topper to place cards, I used them any place that they wouldn’t roll away.” Tori notes that the fruits were almost out of season by mid-February, and she struggled to find enough to fully carry out the theme. “I’d be remiss not to include Aldi in Fayetteville, the last store in Northwest Arkansas to carry the precious pomegranates that were so vital to the theme!” she says of the lucky find. WINTER GARDEN Tori had initially imagined an outdoor wedding; however, when she and Andrew chose a February date, she knew the event would be indoors. Working with Jules Design, they created an elegant indoor garden at The Chancellor Hotel, which served as the site for the ceremony and reception. Boxwood hedge walls, eight large wreaths suspended from the ceiling, and a pair of statement-making large-scale arrangements brought the space to life.

Cassidy L obaugh, owner of H igh S ociety Party & Event R entals , is a party planner at heart. When she saw an opportunity to become a vendor for celebrations, she jumped at the chance, knowing vintage cars and recreational vehicles were the perfect niche for her. “I have always loved style and design, and this was really my way of getting into the event world,” she says. The collection, which Lobaugh says she is still in the process of curating, currently includes an Airstream trailer along with the 1956 Ford Thunderbird pictured here. Lobaugh notes that the Airstream is its own mobile cocktail lounge or DJ station, making it great for corporate events and tailgating as well as weddings. As for
