Just a few short weeks ago, I married my best friend and made the jump from Katie Cox to Katie Cooper. It’s my first day back to work from my honeymoon, and I couldn’t ask for better timing to convey the joy of wedding planning, the surreal quality of the big day, and the range of emotions from start to finish. I feel extremely lucky to be able to deliver this message with fresh, firsthand experience. When I became engaged a little over a year ago, I certainly didn’t know everything that was in store for me. While living on cloud nine with a gorgeous new ring on my finger and a to-do list a mile long, I had the opportunity to join the Weddings in Arkansas team—the very magazine I had been using to plan my own wedding. Was this real life? Taking on a new career and planning a wedding has been one crazy ride that still seems too good to be true, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Whether you’re the bride-to-be or helping host the big day, it’s easy to be consumed—and often times overwhelmed—by details large and small. Where do you start? That’s where we come in. From local vendors (who can take care of it all!) and the latest in wedding gown fashion, to a trusty timeline to keep you on track, our team has researched the trends and gathered real wedding inspiration to make the planning process a little easier for every bride. There’s one thing throughout this process that everyone told me, and I didn’t quite understand it until now. I was repeatedly encouraged to slow down and take in everything. I always thought to myself, “It’s the most important day of my life. How will I not remember it?” As cliché as it may sound, it flies by. So soak it up. Take in the small moments. BREATHE. And when it’s all over, enjoy reliving it over and over again. Hashtags aside, take it from me when I say, it is truly the best day ever.
Best Wishes!

WITH MOSS MOUNTAIN FARM AS THE BACKDROP, LOCAL WEDDING PROFESSIONALS CREATE A DOWNTO-EARTH YET ELEGANT INSPIRATIONAL WEDDING SCENE
STORY: KATIE COX PHOTOGRAPHY: ERIN WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY & B.MATTHEWS CREATIVE STYLIST: ABANY BAUER
I
If there’s one thing our state graciously gives us,
it’s the beauty and divinity of its natural landscape. P. Allen Smith’s Moss Mountain Farm certainly celebrates this gift. Through a warm color palette and organic florals, Jessica Zimmerman of ZIMMERMAN along with a team of talented Arkansas wedding industry professionals created a luxurious experience highlighting natural elements and scenic views in this dreamy wedding inspiration shoot. “Nestled along the Arkansas River is P. Allen Smith’s garden home, Moss Mountain Farm, a magical place known for promoting education and conservation, as well as experiencing what the land provides us. I simply wanted to work with the beauty of the natural landscape, allowing it to control the direction for my design,” Zimmerman says. Playing off the landscape, she further describes this vision, “I share in Smith’s desire to let the land be his inspiration, so I wanted to create a moment that embodied what his farm has inspired in me, celebrating all that is organic and pure.” Creating an intimate ceremony setting and a dinner-party-style reception, the color palette was pulled from the lush surroundings and varying textures in the garden Summer 2017 | weddingsinarkansas.com 19

and farm. “I started off with a warm, soft color palette that effortlessly reflects the environment. I chose warm rust tones to tuck inside the florals, echoing the shades of the garden plants and the brick walls,” Zimmerman notes. “The color palette was chosen to seamlessly coexist with the flora and architecture. I didn’t want anything to distract from the natural beauty of the surroundings,” she adds. Zimmerman’s muse of nature left no detail untouched in creating a fullbody experience from sight to sound to taste. “I wanted everything from the groom’s boutonnière to the cuisine to express the rich heritage and organic nature of the farm.” A large farm table seats guests and seems a natural fit to further the ambience. “Platters of farmto-table courses were served on the simple cheesecloth runner that adorned the table. Soft, bistro style lighting was strung overhead transforming the garden party into a romantic evening,” Zimmerman adds.

Haley PALANCA &
Daniel HOPKINS THE TWENTY-EIGHTH OF OCTOBER, TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN • PARON HALEY’S THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE BIG DAY Romantic, Classic & Rustic
Favorite Florals Haley notes Anna Rogers of Magnolia Belle captured the intimate feel of the day through the floral design while balancing it with a natural look. “There were roses to keep it romantic, but also lots of greenery and neutral hues to speak to the rustic feel I wanted as well,” Haley says. “The flowers were one thing that I really wanted to go all out on since I love them so much,” she adds.
The Fireworks of Love
Haley’s Advice for Brides-to-Be
Haley—along with both her family and Daniel’s—had been anticipating the engagement for almost a month. Daniel wanted it to be a complete surprise. On June 5, 2016, he invited her to an Arkansas Travelers game with a few friends. He knew there would be a fireworks display at the end of the game and timed his proposal to coincide. He also knew Haley wouldn’t suspect anything since the plans were made at the last minute. He popped the question during the display, and she said, “yes.” The announcer even caught the moment and gave a shout out to the newly engaged couple.
“Many people may try to tell you that you can’t put together an awesome wedding in a short time and get all the things you want or have to have. We did it in five months, and it was perfect! It’s also important to take time during the wedding planning process to slow down and love your guy. This will help both parties remember why you’re getting married in the first place and really stop to see what’s important.”
THE OUTDOORSY HYPE Haley opted for a fun and trendsetting “naked” (or un-iced) cake, which she felt had a more rustic feel than traditional fondant-covered or iced versions.
First Dance Song “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra
CLASPING HANDS On her wedding day, Haley requested that the photographer take a picture of her, her mom’s, and her grandmother’s hands together to show their wedding bands. “I’m very happy I did this because my grandmother recently passed away, and now I have that picture that I will cherish forever,” Haley says.
PIZZA PARTY Haley & Daniel treated their guests to pizza and salad at the reception. Haley notes that it was a huge hit with the guests and also reflective of the couple since pizza is their favorite food.

Meghan MCDONALD &
Dillon HOHERTZ THE SEVENTH OF MAY, TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN
Down-Home Menu Traditional Southern and creole fare was the inspiration for the menu. A grits station, featuring wild mushrooms, crawfish tails, and Italian sausage for toppings was one of the highlights. Later in the night, tacos were passed out to guests who may have worked up an appetite on the dance floor.
HONEYMOON DESTINATION Costa Rica
HOT SPRINGS Natural Proposal
MEGHAN & DILLON’S FAVORITE MEMORY OF THE DAY “One of the best parts of the day for both of us was our first dance. We had originally agreed that we were just going to take it easy and do a simple two step, but we ended up getting really into it and did lots of dips and twirls. It definitely set the tone for a fun rest of the night!”
•
Bridal Party Match Their wedding was not the first time Meghan and Dillon had walked down the aisle together. “Dillon was the best man, and I was a bridesmaid in his brother’s wedding in November 2009 in Dallas,” Meghan says. “We hit it off on the dance floor and dated long distance between Dallas and Houston for over four years.”
SWEET & SOUTHERN Rather than a groom’s cake, guests dined on Dillon’s favorite desserts—cherry and peach cobbler.
Dillon proposed on April 25, 2015 in Texas’ Big Bend National Park. “Over the years we grew to love camping because it gave us a break from the constant journey back and forth between Dallas and Houston. Big Bend was always on our bucket list and now it is even more special for the both of us,” Meghan says.
DOUBLE DATE The pair knew they wanted to be married at Meghan’s family’s lake house in Hot Springs during the spring season before temperatures got too warm. They chose May 7, 2016, and realized it was also the date of the famed Kentucky Derby. They added hints of the Derby to their celebration by serving mint juleps and passing out fascinators for female guests to don.

Danielle DUDDING &
William IRVINE THE THIRTEENTH OF AUGUST, TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN • LITTLE ROCK FIELD-WORTHY FLAIR The arrangements and boutonnieres included cotton as a nod to the Southern elements that flowed throughout the wedding.
The Laws of Love
Southern Fare
Danielle and William met on the second day of orientation at Vanderbilt Law School. “I sat down at his table with some friends on our lunch break, and the rest is history,” Danielle says.
“Food is a big part of our life,” Danielle says. “We love to cook and our travels tend to center around restaurants, so we wanted our guests to experience delicious, Southern food. For us, that meant the Capital’s famous pimento cheese along with shrimp and Arkansas grits.” Guests also enjoyed barbecue sliders, gazpacho shots, and a carving station. During the cocktail hour, appetizers of smoked duck, tuna tartare cones, and fried macaroni and cheese were also served.
Custom Cakes HIS: William’s cake, which was in the shape of a pyramid complete with a Bass Pro Shop sign, paid homage to his hometown of Memphis. Carrot cake was his flavor of choice. HERS: Danielle’s cake spoke to her childhood love of Disney and fairytales by having a glass slipper as its topper. It consisted of alternating layers of almond and strawberry.
HONEYMOON DESTINATION Playa Del Carmen, Mexico
Crescent City Proposal The couple were spending a weekend in New Orleans. On Sunday morning, William took Danielle to iconic Jackson Square where he got down on one knee to ask for her hand. Danielle—who was completely surprised—recalls tourists in the square taking photos for them of the special moment. “We spent the rest of the day celebrating in a city that certainly knows how,” Danielle says.
CAPITAL CHARM Danielle is from Fort Smith, and the couple had been to Little Rock’s Capital Hotel on several occasions. They fell in love with the downtown icon’s Southern allure and knew it would be the perfect venue for an Arkansas wedding.
SAY “OM” The bride chose to start her wedding day with a workout with friends. She invited Kayce Johnson of Arkansas Yoga Collective to the hotel for a private yoga class with her bridal party. “It was such a great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone,” she says.

Caroline MCCOMBS &
Joshua MOTES THE TWENTY-EIGHTH OF MAY, TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN • FAYETTEVILLE LET IT GLOW As the night began to wind down, glow sticks were handed out to all the guests. The pair ran through a tunnel of neon light to make their grand exit.
Art Inspiration Art is one of Caroline’s passions, and the Rococo movement is a favorite period for her. She used this as the vision for the couple’s wedding day. She notes that “Rococo Art was characterized by asymmetrical values, pastel color palettes, and an overall whimsical garden theme. It is very similar to what the garden looked like in the 1993 movie The Secret Garden. So, I asked for floral arrangements that looked whimsical and organic in design. We had ranunculus, garden roses, succulents, lavender, willow branches, and more.”
HONEYMOON DESTINATION Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Caroline and Joshua were set up by a mutual friend who knew the pair would be perfect for each other. The friend, Charles, called Caroline and Joshua independently and invited them to dinner. He told them they must come because their future spouse would be in attendance.
Ceremony Sweetness Caroline and Joshua wanted the ceremony to be not just about them but also praising and glorifying Jesus for what marriage symbolizes. To incorporate this idea, they asked their families to come to the altar and place their hands on them to pray after communion. “It was such a sweet moment before we said, ‘I do,’” Caroline says.
The Trip of a Lifetime After a year of dating, Caroline and Joshua took a quick trip to Dallas. They drove down from Fayetteville early on a Saturday morning. Caroline said she didn’t know any of the day’s details but had a few suspicions. Joshua took his soon-to-be-bride to his grandfather’s land north of Dallas—a place he grew up visiting as a child. Caroline recalls looking out at the view and then turning around to see Joshua on his knee. Since Joshua is from Los Angeles, it made sense for the couple to celebrate at In-NOut Burger, which originated in L.A.
WORLD’S FARE A portion of Caroline’s childhood was spent living abroad in the Netherlands. To pay tribute to this, she asked the chef at Ella’s (the restaurant within Inn at Carnall Hall) to recreate her favorite Dutch miniature pancakes, known as Poffertjes, for a late-night snack. The pancakes are served with butter and powdered sugar, adding to their delectableness.
CAROLINE’S ADVICE FOR NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES “Remember to have fun and have lots of grace for one another! Engagements are a weird time because in a sense, you have one foot in and one foot out. There can be a lot of stress and anxiety leading up to the big day; just take it one day at a time and be in the moment! You have forever to be married.”

Elizabeth SNEED &
Caleb DAYER THE TWELFTH OF MARCH, TWO THOUSAND SEVENTEEN • DINNER AND A PROPOSAL After dinner and ice cream to celebrate an anniversary, Caleb suggested the couple go sightseeing at the state capitol. Growing somewhat impatient with Caleb being constantly on his phone and seeming very distracted, Elizabeth admits she didn’t know what was coming. “He pulled me over to the side and said, ‘Lizzy, I have something I want to tell you.’ My heart was racing SO fast as soon as he said this. It was such a blur! Then he dropped to one knee, pulled out the ring box, and asked me that one anticipated question: ‘Elizabeth Sneed, will you marry me,’” she recalls.
Elizabeth’s Advice For Newly Engaged Couples “Have fun and enjoy the process! Spend time with friends and family. Love your people. Also, don’t neglect what is most important: the marriage. The wedding day is important and beautiful, but that only lasts a day,” she says of the celebration.
HONEYMOON DESTINATION Cannon Beach, Oregon
Green with Beauty
Led by the Light While searching for venues, natural light and photographic appeal were extremely important to Elizabeth, who is also a photographer. “I knew I wanted to find a venue with a lot of natural lighting. Having a wedding in March can be a little bit of a risk with the unpredictability of the weather. Many indoor venues have extremely poor lighting. I searched all over the state of Arkansas and kept coming back to Kindred Barn. It had everything,” she says.
Meaningful Jewels Caleb’s father, Tommy Dayer, put together Elizabeth’s engagement ring. He and his brother were the former co-owners of Dayer Jewelers in Conway, and he used his talent to give the ring a meaningful touch that was special to both Caleb and Elizabeth.
MULBERRY
Elizabeth’s bouquet consisted only of greenery. This simple and relaxed yet elegant approach was carried throughout the wedding, including the table décor, bridesmaid bouquets, and the couple’s exit, where greenery stems were given out for guests to wave as the pair ended the celebration.
ACTS OF SERVICE The couple chose symbolic acts to represent a selfless, loving marriage. During the ceremony, the couple washed each other’s feet. “After the ceremony, before Caleb and I sat down to eat, we put on our matching Mr. & Mrs. Dayer aprons, and we served our guests at the reception. We wanted this to represent how we wanted to live our lives: serving others before we served ourselves,” the bride says. Elizabeth notes this was a wonderful way to greet every single guest.

WEDDING DAY TIP FROM ELIZABETH “Do a first look! You will get so many more beautiful and intimate photos to keep forever. This also cuts down on the stress of having multiple photos to take after the ceremony.” Summer 2017 | weddingsinarkansas.com 49

Brooke BENNETT &
Graham HUMPHREY THE SECOND OF JULY, TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN • BENTONVILLE BROOKE & GRAHAM’S WEDDING DAY MUST-HAVE “Hands down, we had to have live music, and Boom Kinetic made the entire evening,” the couple says.
Planning Success “The wedding would absolutely not have happened without our planner, Amanda Reed of Bates-Reed Brides. She organized everything and provided us with choices she knew we would love. Since we were both finishing our final year as undergraduates, we were super busy,” Brooke says.
FAVORITE MEMORIES OF THE DAY
SHE SAID: “It’s so hard to choose just one! I would have to say a combination of the actual moment we became married, the amazing moments we had with the band, and the after party with close friends and family.” HE SAID: “Just being together with friends and family that I do not usually get to see.”
Holiday Meeting Brooke, who is from Plano, Texas, and Graham, who grew up in Hot Springs, met during their freshman year at the University of Arkansas. A mutual friend invited them both to a Halloween get-together.
An Engagement Abroad In the summer of 2015, Brooke was studying abroad at Oxford and Cambridge through a program with the University of Arkansas. At the same time, Graham was working at an internship in London. During their time overseas, they took a weekend trip to Brussels, Belgium. During that stay they decided they wanted to become engaged and marry as they left college. They were engaged for close to a year and married just after they received their undergraduate degrees.
The Perfect Venue Since the bride’s family is from Texas, the two decided to get married where they met and were living at that time—Northwest Arkansas. “Our phenomenal wedding planner, Amanda Reed, suggested a variety of locations based on our overall wedding ideas, “ Brooke says. “We instantly fell in love with 21c Museum Hotel in Bentonville for the fantastic modern art displays and aesthetic, as well as the delicious food.”
ARTFUL EXIT When it was time to leave the celebration, Brooke and Graham exited through a tunnel of sparklers to the 21c Museum Hotel “art car.” This car, known as Making Change, was a 21c-commissioned artwork by artist Monica Mahoney. It is a Fleetwood Cadillac limousine covered with nickels, dimes, and pennies. The work was inspired by Walmart’s Bentonville origins. Brooke and Graham were lucky enough to drive around town in the car for a bit after making their grand exit.
STUNNING STRUCTURE Brooke and Graham were married under a contemporary four-post acrylic structure that was adorned with branches from which hung teardrop vases filled with vivid flowers and berries.
