expect the unexpected
PHOTOGRAPHY: RETT PEEK
It didn’t take long for the Weddings in Arkansas team to come up with a concept for this issue’s Style shoot. After brainstorming about bohemianinspired gowns, over-the-top florals, and lots of green space, we came up with a vision of the bride in a setting like the English countryside. I have to say, the result—on the cover and the full spread starting on page 28—exceeded my expectations. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes of one of these shoots. For example, because of weeks of rain, our model, Paten, wore her toughest combat boots under all those ethereal gowns. Ace the horse was much more interested in grazing on grass than posing for us. (Luckily, he still looked pretty awesome doing so.) And there was more than one run-in with other critters—namely, some larger-than-life grasshoppers and one grumpy miniature horse—that added a few unpredictable elements to our day. Believe it or not, running a magazine shoot is a little like preparing for a wedding; you can plan all you want, but that won’t stop the unexpected from happening on the big day! I was reminded of some of my own day-of surprises (most happy, some laughable) when our managing editor, Tiffany, interviewed me about my own wedding for its inclusion in this issue. My husband and I just celebrated our one-year anniversary in November, and it’s an honor to be included among the five real weddings in these pages. While you think ahead to your own big day, remember there are going to be hiccups that might be out of your control. Enjoy every moment—even those that don’t go quite as planned. Best wishes!

ELEGANT ALTAR
A small yet sophisticated ceremony space was created in the venue’s loft around an arched mirror accented with greenery and candlelight. “We were thinking of brides who wanted an intimate, romantic indoor wedding,” says photographer Erin Wilson.
Paper Supply Co. designed an invitation suite with deckle edges, a detail that recurs on the menu cards and in torn ribbons wrapped around flatware at each place setting.

Magnolia Belle Floral provided bouquets and table arrangements in an airy, pastel palette that pops against what Natalie calls the “moodier grays and blue tones” of the linens and dinnerware.
After planning and designing weddings for six years, Natalie Scott of Natalie Scott events set out to build the perfect venue. “I thought how awesome it would be if a wedding planner designed a venue that was built with every aspect of that day in mind,” Natalie says. To that end, she designed and built The Grandeur House on 40 acres of land west of Little Rock. Soaring ceilings, an all-white and wood-tone palette, and clean lines keep the setting classic yet modern, which lets the details of each individual event stand out. For this inspirational shoot, Natalie gathered a team of wedding vendors to bring an air of romance to the space. A delicate periwinkle blue ties together elements of this design, as seen in the bridesmaids’ dresses, tablecloths, paper goods, and glassware. “I design a lot of neutral weddings, so I wanted to show something a little different,” Natalie says, noting that she is drawn toward palettes that are “light, bright, and airy.” The French influence is brought to life in details such as antique silver pieces and wooden bistro tables. Another layer of vintage inspiration comes through in images captured by film rather than a digital camera, a choice photographer Erin Wilson says she uses as often as possible. “I think film produces the most beautiful colors, depth, and texture,” she says. The overall effect is a scene that’s as timeless as it is fresh.

INSPIRED DESIGN
“The design for the wedding venue came from a combination of my experience as a wedding planner and my personal design aesthetic,” Natalie says. “I drew a lot of inspiration from merging modern farmhouse styles with touches of an Italian vineyard.”
Abundant windows let natural light spill in, which makes The Grandeur House a perfect choice for brides and grooms who crave the feel of an outdoor wedding but the peace of mind of an indoor event.

“My mother-in-law gave me a beautiful ring that she, too, wore in her wedding as my ‘something borrowed’ and ‘something old.’ I also had some pretty special David Yurman earrings that were my ‘something blue.’” —Nealy

Some things are just meant to be. That was the case for the wedding day of Nealy Morton LITTLE ROCK 5.20.17 and Adam Wells, who met while tailgating on the War Memorial Golf Course before an Arkansas Razorbacks football game at the neighboring namesake stadium. Nealy had always dreamt of a wedding in her parents’ Heber Springs backyard with a reception at the Red Apple Inn. However, with her guest list and logistics to consider, she opted to move the wedding to her father’s hangar at the Heber Springs Airport. Unfortunately, this plan, too, had to be scrapped. “Sensing my heartbreak, my dad made a call to the manager of TAC Air at Little Rock airport and expressed our desperation,” Nealy says. “The manager, Kip, agreed to entertain the idea of holding the wedding in TAC’s historic, World War II-era hangar at Adams Field!” With the help of a skilled team, including planner Anne-Claire Allen Owens and floral designers Dale Aldridge and Tammy Copeland of Silks A Bloom, Nealy says they were able to pull together “the dreamiest, most creative wedding I could imagine.” This “meant to be” big day included a complete transformation of the hangar, which took the design team three days to complete. A custom dance floor, enormous hanging floral chandelier, and a menu of Southern-style fare with signature drinks made the evening an unforgettable experience for the couple’s 400 guests.

THE DRESS
“As a professional player of dressup when I was little, the perfect dress was number one on my want list for the big day. I fell in love with my dress in Monique Lhuillier’s ad campaign for her Fall 2016 collection. I never dreamed it would be ‘the dress,’ but it actually worked out. I cried as soon as I put it on.” —Nealy
The night’s signature cocktails included Yuzu Sours and Pomegranate mojitos.

NEALY’S FAVORITE MEMORY OF THE DAY
“We met at the Arkansas State Capitol steps for our first look and wedding portraits. As the limo was exiting the Capitol, I was overwhelmed with emotion and nerves. It was completely unexpected but the only moment in the whole day where the gravity of the experience was really real. I was happy to have a moment like that.”

ADAM’S FAVORITE MEMORY OF THE DAY
“Just after the ceremony but before we entered the reception, we were able to enjoy about five minutes completely alone.
It was wonderful being able to have a few moments of quiet, calm reflection in the midst of all the dizzying activity of the big day.”
Nealy and Adam aren’t huge fans of chocolate, so they opted for a strawberry cake. Kelli Marks of Cathead’s Diner designed an ombre pink, seven-layer confection featuring a ruffled-edge bottom tier.

JENNI + A ARON ROGERS 2.24.18
GO BOLD
“I really wanted bold florals to pop against the white background of the ballroom. I loved my bouquet, which was the inspiration for the florals in general,” Jenni says.

It’s rare that dads of the bride and groom serve as matchmakers, but Jenni Goodwin and Aaron Owen initially crossed paths because of their fathers. “We met at a scholarship day at a college that neither of us ended up going to. Our dads recognized each other from their time together at the University of Arkansas, where they lived next door in the dorms,” Jenni recalls. The couple, who both chose to attend the University of Central Arkansas, ended up in the same group of friends and began dating during their sophomore year. Six years later, Aaron asked for Jenni’s hand during a surprise visit to Crystal Bridges. Jenni was under the premise that they were there to drop off a camera lens for one of Aaron’s friends. However, the guise fell when Aaron got down on one knee. All the while, his dad was in the background taking pictures of the moment. For their big day, Jenni imagined a classic and romantic celebration. Working with Jessika McCuin Weddings and Tanarah Luxe Floral, the Ballroom at I Street (which is located in Bentonville and was a short drive from their ceremony) was transformed from a blank canvas to an elegant setting featuring a rich palette, which perfectly complemented the February day.

Jenni chose a pair of Badgley Mischka slip-on sneakers to pair with her gown. “I loved my shoes. I wanted something classy but also comfy,” she says. “I chose the navy to play on one of our color selections but also to be my ‘something blue!’”

STEPHANIE + PAT R IC K
“It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been dating or how sure you are about getting married, there are still nerves,” Stephanie says. To calm theirs, Stephanie and Patrick did a first look at the Old State House prior to heading to St. Mark’s for the ceremony.
Stephanie Maxwell and Patrick Newton have their mutual friend, Colleen, to thank for their introduction. “I was living in London when Patrick moved to Little Rock for a job,” Stephanie says. “Colleen had kind of taken Patrick under her wing to introduce him to friends around town, and she emailed me to say I needed to meet him when I moved back.” Once Stephanie was back in her hometown, the two met at Colleen’s birthday/Sugar Bowl party. They hit it off, began hanging out, and eventually started dating several months later. The couple dated for six years before becoming engaged in March 2017. They opted for a short engagement and set the date for November, in part because Stephanie had always dreamed of a fall wedding. “I love the crispness of fall, and I just thought if this is a day you’re supposed to remember for the rest of your life, it should be our favorite time of year,” she says. Several other elements were must-haves for the couple’s dream day. For example, the bride knew she wanted to be married at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the church she has attended since she was 3 years old. “Our priest is a close family friend, and we knew we wanted him to marry us,” she adds. And since Patrick’s side would be traveling from his home state of Kentucky, the pair also wanted to show off the city. “The Little Rock Club has amazing views of downtown, so that was one reason we chose it for our reception venue,” Stephanie adds. Ultimately, they agreed that the most important aspect would be having all of their loved ones together to celebrate. “It meant a lot to have so many of our family and friends in one place that night,” Patrick says. “We had friends from college and all the different places we’ve lived that we only get to see once or twice every few years. Getting to the reception and seeing all of them was really special.”

Stephanie’s “something blue” were two embroidered handkerchiefs, one from her grandmother and one from Patrick’s grandmother, wrapped around the base of her bouquet. Her “something borrowed” were the gold earrings her mother and grandmother both wore on their wedding days.
DRESSED IN LACE
“I always imagined having a lace dress, and I fell in love with the neckline and smoky color of this one. It was also really comfortable, which was important to me!” says Stephanie, who is seen here with her mother and sister.

THE SWEETEST THING
“People told me Kelli Marks made the most delicious cakes in town, so I wanted to use her. To keep it simple, we went with a scraped cake adorned in flowers by Silks A Bloom,” Stephanie says.

HAILEY + DA NIEL
You could say that Hailey Flatte and Daniel Wilkinson have had chemistry from the start. The two first met in a GREEN WOOD 6.2.18 high school chemistry class in their hometown of Greenwood. They hit it off while working on several group projects and began dating a few months later. Their courtship lasted seven years, during which time the pair both attended the University of Arkansas. Daniel, who is a year older, went on to pursue a master’s degree at Vanderbilt in Nashville, but frequently visited Hailey back in Fayetteville while she was finishing her senior year. During one of these trips, he proposed in Wilson Park after what started out as a typical walk with their dog. “As Daniel and I and our dog, Nelson, rounded a corner of the park, I saw a table set up with flowers and photos of us. We walked over to it, and Daniel proposed!” Hailey recalls. In planning for the wedding, the pair knew they wanted to return to their hometown to exchange vows. The high school sweethearts chose Daniel’s family home, which is a historical landmark known as The Rox or The Rox School, as the venue for their ceremony and reception. Working with JLK Weddings and Tanarah Luxe Floral, the team transformed the home into a graceful setting for a day to remember.

GARDEN BY DESIGN
“I knew my biggest design focus would be on the flowers. I was always telling our wedding planner that I wanted the guests to feel like they were in an ethereal garden,” Hailey says. Working closely with Tanarah Luxe Floral, the vision became a reality. Florals were found at every turn—from the home’s 25-foot front columns, which were wrapped in roses and greenery, to a large-scale hanging installation over the black-and-white dance floor.

A MARBLEIZED CONFECTION
The couple served a lemon sheet cake with raspberry filling at the reception, while a stand-in faux cake that featured marbled fondant and gold accents was displayed throughout the night to coordinate with the palette of the day.
A CLEAR SIGN
All of the signage for the wedding was printed on fabric, a motif that was carried throughout the wedding’s design. “It was the perfect dreamy detail for the wedding!” Hailey says.

ALICIA + LUKE “I love flowers, and this was something I was very passionate about during wedding planning,” Alicia says. Working with Magnolia Belle Floral, she opted for a bevy of soft pink blooms and greenery.
52 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall/Winter 2018
Alicia Hamilton and Luke Moore had dated for close to four years when they began to talk about marriage. “Luke and I had talked about PA NGBU R N 4.28.18 getting engaged for about six months prior to him proposing. I am very difficult to surprise, so I believed I would know when he was proposing,” Alicia says. However, Luke was able to catch her off guard when he asked her on a day date to Little Rock’s Local Lime. The couple ate and shopped at a few stores where Luke treated Alicia to a new dress and shoes, which he asked her to wear for the last stop of the day, a trip to an ice cream store he wanted to try. On the way to this final stop, Luke turned down a road that was unfamiliar to Alicia. “The entire time he was telling me why he loved me and my family. When we crossed a little bridge, I could see a beautiful gazebo in the distance. Luke looked at me and asked if I wanted to kiss him one last time as his girlfriend,” Alicia recalls. After the proposal, they celebrated at a pre-planned party with friends and family. The couple, who grew up together in Searcy but didn’t date until after high school graduation, were engaged for eight months before tying the knot. With the help of planner Natalie Scott of Natalie Scott Events, they created a beautiful and memorable day in a setting close to their hometown.

ALICIA’S FAVORITE MEMORY OF THE DAY
“My first favorite memory is walking down the aisle with my dad and making eye contact with Luke … There really are no words to describe this feeling. My second is when my bridal party prayed over me. During the months leading up to the wedding, I faced a lot of health issues, so having my girls surround me and pray over that special day was incredible. We all cried so much that we had to redo our makeup and my gown had mascara stains on the train. I would not trade that moment for anything!” A VERY SPECIAL CEREMONY
Luke and Alicia wrote their own vows. In addition to this personal touch, they had Luke’s brother-in-law and grandfather each perform portions of the ceremony.
