Modern take on tradition When planning my wedding, I did what a lot of brides do: I turned to my mother for advice. However, I was surprised by how often I stumped her. It seems weddings have evolved since the 1970s, and the choices I faced about mismatched Photo by Rett Peek bridesmaids dresses and reception bands were not ones she’d considered for her own wedding. Even details from my sister’s wedding, held almost 10 years prior, were surprisingly irrelevant by the time I was planning mine. Though there were similar themes throughout our wedding days—my sister and I both got married in our hometown church, my mom and I wore her mother’s gold earrings—I was keenly aware that there are more possibilities than ever in approaching wedding planning. Because of this, couples are more empowered to personalize the details of their days. Inspiration for doing so abounds in this issue. For celebration staples like flowers and cakes, you’ll find ideas to help you think outside the box (pages 11 and 14). And our Real Weddings section showcases other couples’ unconventional selections, like serving homemade gelato instead of a groom’s cake at the reception (page 34). One bride’s recommendation to those engaged was to “plan around the moments and details that are most important to you,” and I think that is pretty great advice. Focus on celebrating the things you love the most about each other, and everything else will fall into place.

MELODY & MEANING

“There are a ton of lowcost ways to personalize a wedding day; for example, escort cards, table numbers, and other day-of signage are all easy and affordable,” Maddie says. For this setting, she used lyrics from “Love Together” by singer-songwriter Holly Arrowsmith on place cards with the bride and groom’s names in bold typeface. “I imagined it would be the first dance song, and that incorporating its lyrics into the stationery would make it special for everyone who attends.”

When photographer Olivia Fryer was looking for a venue for this styled shoot in Northwest Arkansas, it didn’t take her long to land on a location. “Osage House is being built on this really gorgeous property that is pretty vast and private,” Olivia says. “It’s such a great example of how beautiful the outdoors are in Arkansas.” The 54-acre property in Cave Springs is home to a chapel, reception hall, and covered outdoor area, all of which are set to open this summer. After selecting the backdrop, Olivia wanted to keep other elements of the shoot organic and casual, and she gravitated toward a simple palette of greens, oranges, and blues. “I knew I would be shooting at dusk during golden hour, and that’s where I got the idea to incorporate blue into the palette,” Olivia says. Emma Rippelmeyer of Stems by Em provided floral design and brought in those cooler tones by using blue delphinium, brunia balls, and thistle in the bouquet, centerpiece, and atop the wedding cake. For the tablescape, Olivia reached out to Maddie Ward of Sonnet Weddings to lend a few unexpected touches to the design. “With the plates, silverware, and glassware, I was trying to mix in a bit of modern with traditional,” Maddie says. “I’ve had a handful of couples who are loving black plates, so I looked for a way to mix those in.” Contemporary gold flatware and bold typography on place cards are paired with vintage glassware and a classic checkered tablecloth for an eclectic combination.

A wide-brimmed hat and hunter green scarf provide warmth as the sun sets and add to the bride’s casual vibe.

I N S P I R AT I O N AMONG THE WILDFLOWERS

In addition to blue delphinium, brunia balls, and thistle, Emma used burgundy Scabiosa, cappuccino roses, ‘Avalanche’ roses, ‘Quicksand’ roses, white anemone, Israeli ruscus, and rosemary throughout the floral design.

DONUT DECADENCE

Rick’s Bakery created a donut-adorned cake that is elegant and sculptural yet echoes the natural feel of the rest of the affair. “I had seen other versions of cakes incorporating donuts and included one in our original vision board,” Olivia says.” “Rick’s Bakery took that idea and ran with it.”

Maddie brought in some unexpected pops of neon in the napkins, a DIY project she completed using amaranth, cosmos, and mint as natural dyes. Visit weddingsinarkansas.com/blog to learn how to make your own.

CAROLINE + BLAKE

St. Joseph Catholic Church holds a special place in the couple’s heart. They followed in the footsteps of their parents, grandparents, and siblings by exchanging vows here.

TON T I TOW N 6.30.18

Caroline Franco and Blake Ceola both grew up in Tontitown. Their sisters were close friends, and they even remember playing together on weekends. However, sometimes fate takes its time. “There was just enough of an age gap between Blake and I that we didn’t become friends until our mothers played matchmaker in the spring of 2016,” Caroline says. “We both pocketed this crazy idea for a while since we thought it was super weird, but, to our surprise, it was actually perfect!” After dating for 15 months, the couple took a trip to Colorado with Caroline’s sister and brother-in-law. The trip was meant to celebrate Blake’s 30th birthday, but he had additional plans. After a birthday dinner in downtown Breckenridge, the couple took a walk. “The whole day had been chilly and misty,” Caroline recalls. “The clouds opened up, and the sun peeked through shining over the mountains. It was incredible.” Blake took the 34 Weddings in Arkansas | Spring/Summer 2019

opportunity to get down on one knee and pop the question. From there the planning began for a June “Italian countryside” wedding. Both Blake and Caroline knew they wanted to be married at St. Joseph Catholic Church. “Tradition is huge in Tontitown,” Caroline says. “St. Joseph is where our grandparents, parents, and siblings all were married, so we wanted to celebrate our marriage the true Italian/Catholic way by continuing the tradition.” The reception venue was an equally easy decision. “One of my favorite memories growing up is spending Saturdays with Dad down at the barn, listening to country music, and building things,” Caroline says. “So, we planned the reception area around the barn on my parents’ property. Celebrating the biggest day of my life on the land that brought me so much joy and a sense of freedom for so many years was an absolute dream.”

A mix of styles brought personality to the bridesmaids’ dresses. Muted tones and shimmering fabrics stand out against the natural setting’s vibrant green backdrop.

OUTDOOR LOUNGE

Caroline notes she is drawn to antique mismatched furniture pieces and dark wood. Randal Events highlighted this by using comfortable yet classic pieces to create lounge and dining areas for guests on the property.

TRUE TO NATURE

Jana Mayfield of Mayfield Flowers & Designs, who also happens to be a close friend of Caroline’s family, designed the day’s florals. “Jana really understood the importance of keeping our overall vision of an Italian countryside by incorporating family vessels, fresh fruit, sunflowers, and other flowers customary to an Italian theme,” Caroline says.

PLAY IT COOL

After an Italian-themed dinner, guests enjoyed a traditional bride’s cake paired with homemade gelato created by a family friend, chef Vince Pianalto. “Blake is not a cake eater, so we thought it would be fun to serve his favorite dessert, ice cream, rather than a groom’s cake,” Caroline says.

NATALIE + KEVIN LE ACH V ILLE 5.6.18 For Natalie Lipsky and Kevin Hulett, what started as a junior high crush between two friends ending up leading to a lifetime of togetherness. Natalie and Kevin met in eighth grade at Brookland Junior High and became instant friends, often writing and reading notes to one another, then began dating junior year. After five years of dating, Kevin knocked on Natalie’s door, flowers in hand, with an extra special note to read. “He told me different qualities he wanted in a wife and how I met all of those qualities. He shared what the Bible says about marriage and read a few verses to me, and then got down on one knee,” Natalie says. After accepting his proposal, the couple celebrated their joy with their families, and the planning began. Natalie had dreamt of an outdoor wedding with an abundance of flowers and close family and friends. After seeing pictures of Bo Adams Estate in Leachville, she knew she had to see it in person. “After one visit, I was sold,” she says. The open, airy setting became the backdrop for the couple’s special day. Before guests arrived, Natalie and Kevin made sure to have a few quiet moments together. “My favorite memory of the day was when Kevin and I shared our vows with each other alone before the ceremony. It was a sweet, emotional time that was special for both of us,” Natalie says. Following the official ceremony, the couple invited guests to an early evening traditional Southern meal followed by treats from a s’mores bar and, of course, cake. The bride’s cake featured vanilla and strawberry layers in each slice and was accented with fresh floral that coordinated with the day’s garden theme. The groom had his own chocolate and peanut butter confection to share with guests. At the end of the night, the newlyweds exited through a tunnel of sparklers held by wellwishers and loved ones.

Comfortable shoes meant Natalie could spend hours on the dance floor with her guests.

WEDDING STYLE

Natalie describes the couple’s big day as “elegant, Southern, and inspired by a garden.” “I envisioned a small outdoor wedding with lots of flowers and a very natural feel, where we were surrounded by all our family and friends,” she adds.

“I knew exactly the wedding cake I wanted, and no matter how many other designs and cakes I looked at, I never swayed from my wedding cake,” Natalie says of the four-tiered confection. Kevin had a chocolate groom’s cake with peanut butter frosting and crushed candy toppings.

For Amber Smith and Josh Cissell, love seemed to come out of nowhere. The pair, who both grew up in Little Rock but didn’t meet until their freshman year at the University of Arkansas, had mutual friends but had never officially crossed paths. That is, until Josh stopped Amber one day on her way to class and asked her out. “It was so out of the blue; we hardly knew each other,” Amber says. “I was hesitant at first but decided to give him a chance, and we have been together ever since!” After almost five years of dating, Josh surprised Amber once again with a proposal. He told Amber one of his clients was hosting a Christmas party at the Castle on Stagecoach and they needed to make an appearance. When they arrived a horsedrawn carriage picked them up to take them to the entrance. While a couple they had ridden to the entrance with got out, Josh told Amber he paid extra for them to have a longer ride. After coming to a grouping of lanterns on the property, the 42 Weddings in Arkansas | Spring/Summer 2019

carriage slowed and Josh got out. Amber saw a sign made of lights that read Will you marry me? She said yes, and the two spent the evening celebrating with friends and family. It was important to Josh and Amber to hold their wedding close to home so those dearest to them could attend. Cold Springs Events checked off multiple boxes on their list, including ease of flow for guests between the inside and outdoors, the setup for a band, and enough room for their large guest list. They included personal elements—such as Amber’s grandmother’s Bible on the guest book table, two strawberry groom’s cakes (because everyone loves strawberry cake!), and an arbor for the ceremony made by Amber’s parents—to make the day a reflection of them. “For us it wasn’t about having an over-the-top wedding; we wanted it to be fun, original, and truly a celebration of us as a couple,” Amber says.

WARMING TREND

Amber says she gravitates toward coral and shades of orange. These were used abundantly throughout the wedding along with blush and neutral hues. Classic roses and lilies mixed with the modern influence of king protea and pampas grass for a whimsical look.

“I have always loved the simple yet unique look of naked cakes. We opted for a more covered version for our wedding cake (shown here), and went with less icing for the groom’s two cakes.

Josh and his groomsmen surprised Amber with a choreographed dance for the garter toss. “I was so impressed,” Amber says. “Josh has such a big personality and is always dancing; I loved that everyone got to see that side of him!”

MARY DA NIEL + JOHN L I T T L E ROCK 9.1.18 Two worlds collided when Mary Daniel Simpson and John Morgan met in law school at the University of Virginia. “From our first date on, I knew I wanted to marry him,” Mary Daniel says. “Although we are both attorneys, and seemingly quite similar (we joke that we began finishing each other’s sentences on our first date and have never stopped!), I view him as my perfect complement rather than my twin. I wanted our wedding to reflect exactly that—our similarities and differences.” Notably, Mary Daniel wanted the day to show the influence of the couple’s hometowns. She is from Little Rock, while John grew up in Texas but is originally from the mountains of Panama. Working with Anne-Claire Allen Owens of Anne-Claire Allen Planning & Design, they set out to combine these destinations into what Mary Daniel calls “one large party.” The couple exchanged vows at Little Rock’s First Presbyterian Church, which was adorned with a bevy of bright pink florals to reflect Panama’s tropical atmosphere. For the reception, a change of venue (moving to the Clinton Presidential Center) signaled a start to the party. Here, guests were greeted with a glass of Panama sangria before dining on Arkansas favorites, including fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. Later in the evening Tex-Mex sliders and quesadillas (a nod to where the newlyweds would make their home in Texas) were delivered to the dance floor to keep the party going. The décor included Mary Daniel’s family’s large collection of blue-and-white Chinoiserie vases, vivid floral arrangements and table garlands, a custom monogram (that embellished everything from the dance floor to drink stirrers), and a milk-and-cookies bar in lieu of a groom’s cake. “I would advise brides to plan around the moments and details that are most important to them. And, find someone—a planner, a friend, or family member—who will champion your ideas,” Mary Daniel says.

A WARM WELCOME

Out-of-town guests were greeted with boxes of Arkansas favorites, including a Lux candle from Des Arc and marshmallow treats from The Crispery, which has its bakery in Pine Bluff. Gardenias, seen on the printed items in the welcome box as well as the invitation’s envelope liner, were incorporated as a tribute to the bride’s late paternal grandmother’s love of the flower.

PALETTE THAT POPS

Sky blue shantung silk bridesmaids dresses and warm pink and white blooms set the tone for the wedding’s palette. “Anne-Claire was a magician at incorporating blue, white, and pink throughout the wedding weekend,” Mary Daniel says.

Artist Deborah Allen of Little Rock created the monogram painting on display at the bar.

Mary Daniel’s family’s collection of blue-and-white vases originated with her maternal grandmother. The use of the vases throughout the decor as well as the fans given out at the reception are reflective of her influence on the bride’s life.

Prior to the ceremony, a balloon release paid tribute to deceased family and friends. “When I was young, my brother passed away, and my grandmother helped me understand the concept of death by sending balloons up to heaven for my brother,” Mary Daniel says. “This was an incredibly important part of the day for me.”

MODERN MEETS TRADITIONAL

The contemporary architecture of the Clinton Presidential Center spoke to John’s preference for clean-lined design, while classic blue-and-white porcelain pieces and linens reflect Mary Daniel’s love of traditional accessories.

CONLEY + JUSTIN LITTLE ROCK 6.23.18 Surprises were in store for Conley Harrison when her nowhusband, Justin Wortman, invited her to what she thought was a charity event at his parents’ home. When she arrived, his mom told her a news crew was there to do a story on the event, and she and Justin went to the pool area to check it out. Here, with Pinnacle Mountain in the background, Justin proposed, and their friends and family (who were all gathered for the “event”) rushed in to celebrate with the couple. After being engaged for just over a year, the couple said “I do” and celebrated their love in what Conley calls a “classic, colorful, and chic” wedding. Conley notes the vows, which were administered by her godfather, Terry White, were especially meaningful due to her recent diagnosis with an autoimmune disease. “In the traditional wedding vows, the phrase ‘in sickness and in health’ became a stark reality for us,” Conley says. “I am blessed God chose Justin to be my husband to have and to hold me even on my worst days.” After partying with friends and family, the couple shared one last dance alone to “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur before exiting the reception through a line of glowing sparklers.

GOING GREEN

“I wanted a lot of greenery in our wedding to represent the green in our last name, Greenhaw. I also love blushcolored flowers, so we incorporated a lot of blush and champagne roses,” Mina says. 52 Weddings in Arkansas | Spring/Summer 2019

A chance meeting via phone led to romance for Mina L I T T L E ROCK 10.20.18 Pham and James Greenhaw. “James worked for HewlettPackard in Conway, and I worked for a company that was a partner of HP in Washington, D.C.,” Mina says. “We got to know each other when he visited D.C. later in the year, and the rest is history.” The couple initially wanted a summer outdoor wedding. However, after considering the heat and the comfort of their guests, they opted for a fall date and chose James’s dad and stepmother’s backyard as the venue. “It’s a beautiful backdrop that highlights the changing of the leaves,” Mina says of the location. Following the ceremony, the couple and their guests headed to Pleasant Valley Country Club to celebrate. Guests dined on a buffet loaded with the pair’s favorite entrées and plenty of side dishes. “We can be indecisive at times so this was the best way to get everything!” Mina says. James surprised his bride and their guests with his rendition of Nat King Cole’s “L-O-V-E.” “I had no idea he could sing so well!” Mina says. After a delayed honeymoon in Bordeaux and London, the couple are making their home in Virginia.
