striking a balance Last fall my parents embarked on the dreaded task of downsizing. Their two-story house and vast amounts of storage had made sense when they moved in 15 years prior, but as they’ve eased into retirement and their roles as grandparents over the past few years, they’ve been eager to simplify. So, at the end of last year, they found a smaller house just a few miles away, enlisted the help of daughters and sonsPhotograph by Rett Peek in-law to help pack, and made the move. While the new place ticked many of their wish-list boxes—less square footage, a more manageable yard, and one-story convenience—they are still working toward making that house feel like home. My parents’ style is traditional, with antiques, collections, and family heirlooms in every room; this house was built in 2014, and there are newer elements to the design that need to be reconciled with their classic preferences. It’s a challenge I’m sure many of our readers will recognize: How do you strike the perfect balance between new and old? With our New Traditional issue, we hope to inspire solutions that do just that. In our two features this month—one recently remodeled to look anything but recently remodeled and the other a brand-new build—the designers desired to put a truly timeless spin on their clients’ livable styles. Modernizing traditional design can mean mixing furniture styles, updating paint colors, or choosing new frames for artwork; and sometimes you don’t know what works until you try it. Finding that equilibrium can take a while, but in the meantime, have fun with it! If you get stuck, I hope you’ll turn to At Home for ideas.

A local source for exterior shutters, window shades, and screens recently opened in Little Rock. Bass Outdoor Shutters & Shades is helmed by Laura and Rory Bass, owners of Laura’s Draperies & Blinds in the Heights. “The business idea stemmed from the local clients Laura has serviced for the past 15 years,” Rory says. “Repeatedly, local builders, real estate agents, and designers have requested exterior shutters. There has been a constant need for this kind of product outside of typical box stores, and we are excited to now have the vendors’ and manufacturers’ support we need to provide this service.” Bass Outdoor Shutters & Shades currently offers in-home consultations, and the company has already grown to include sales reps servicing North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. Additionally, the Basses have recently acquired Blind Mart, a locally owned company with a 30-year history in Arkansas, to be able to offer window coverings at all price points. SOUTHERN STYLE I love your magazine. I’m originally from Louisiana but moved to the Midwest many years ago. PAINT COLOR REQUEST Could you tell me the paint color of the kitchen cabinets in the “Happy House” feature, page 60 in the January/February 2021 issue? I love the magazine and have been a subscriber for years! —MARY BETH M.

Thanks to designer Kevin Walsh for passing along this info for us to share: The kitchen cabinet paint color in “Happy House” is “Stepping Stone” by PPG.
your magazine, but moving back down to the South from outside Chicago recently, I notice everyone who is advertising furniture or design is always showing the same styles and same designs and colors, especially white, white, white. White can be beautiful, but it seems like everyone in the South seems to hold on to that style without deviating. … I love diversity and color for my personal style and would love to see a little more of a mix in décor. I love to see things a little out of the box and not just what’s in style. … Thank you, and again, I do subscribe to your magazine, and it’s done quite well. Just a suggestion for a little more diversity in tastes.
MORE COLOR, PLEASE!
—DAWN F.
I hope you won’t mind if I give you a different perspective here. I have moved around the country my whole life and have done a lot of world traveling. I love

Classic Made Current Inspired by grandmillennial design trends, Heather Krijt updates a Little Rock bedroom
“Sleepy Blue” by SherwinWilliams

hen Elizabeth and Mike Johnson decided to update one of their home’s guest rooms, they turned to Heather Krijt, owner of HK Designs. Wanting to create a space perfectly suited for their daughter, Kate, to enjoy when she visits, they sought to blend classic with contemporary. “The rest of the house is traditional, so we wanted to give this room a bit of a grandmillenial feel with fringe, toile, and a monochromatic palette,” Heather says, referring to the design trend inspiring millennials to embrace traditional styles. The update was meant not only to give the room character, but also to make it feel larger. “The room is very big, but a dark brown accent wall and ceiling made it feel confining,” Heather says. A coat of white paint on the ceiling and light blue for the walls and trim remedied this. While wallpaper was considered for both the entire space and as an accent wall, the designer and her client opted for two large panels, which feel more like artwork. As for the furnishings, Heather chose a mix of new pieces and antiques to achieve a layered look. “Liz’s house is a treasure trove, and she let me walk through to find just the right things for this room,” Heather says pointing to a small side chair, which they recovered, and a full-length bamboo mirror. A new custom headboard with a matching bedskirt was paired with coordinating bamboo nightstands, while a contemporary swirl pattern flows from the bedside lamps to throw pillows and a pair of ‘X’ benches to keep the look current.

“This is not your grandmother’s traditional. Changing just a few things and keeping the color palette fresh can make a huge difference in a space.” —Heather Krijt, designer

TAILORED TOILE
Now in her 20s, Kate has loved toile since she was a little girl, so it was a no-brainer to incorporate it here. Two panels of Schumacher’s “Persian Lancers” pattern in Porcelain were framed with paneling to create a custom look that is also budget friendly.
2
PILLOW PICKS
Pillows in three fabrics— including a fretwork pattern, a contemporary swirl, and a velvet trimmed in grosgrain to match the bedskirt—bring an inviting yet chic look to the bed and nearby window seat.

ALL THE TRIMMINGS
Rather than start from scratch, Heather updated the room’s existing neutral drapes with a blue trim. “The details really make the room, and this makes the drapes feel very custom,” she says.
4
CHINOISERIE CHIC
From the scene on the toile to the frame of the nightstands and full-length mirror, the space has a chinoiserie influence that carries throughout many of the pieces for cohesiveness.

LAKE OUACHITA
Experience the natural beauty of one of Arkansas’s largest lakes, Lake Ouachita, with a stay at MOUNTAIN HARBOR RESORT & SPA . Founded and family-owned since 1955, Mountain Harbor has served as the backdrop for generations of gatherings; because of that history, creating a family-friendly atmosphere is a priority. The resort’s luxury cabins are complete with kitchens, hot tubs, and large decks offering breathtaking views of the lake, and the opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors are endless. At the Mountain Harbor marina, you can store your boat or rent one to spend the day out on the water. Because of its size, the lake never feels crowded, leaving plenty of space to slip into hidden coves to swim, tube, and ski. There are also mountain biking trails, horse stables, and kayaks available for rent, meaning even more opportunities to get outside and make memories. Need a parents’ retreat? Enjoy a break from the kitchen at the Lodge restaurant, or book a relaxing couples massage at the resort’s Turtle Cove Spa. After your visit, you’ll understand why Mountain Harbor has become a home away from home for generations of Arkansans. Find more information and book your stay at mountainharborresort.com.

THE WHITE RIVER
Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, the White River is considered a world-class destination for trout fishing. That’s no surprise, given the nearby Bull Shoals Dam makes for consistently cold waters and the perfect conditions for fishing year-round. For ultimate comfort and convenience when visiting the White River, plan to stay at GASTON’S WHITE RIVER RESORT. Here, you can book a fishing trip with one of Gaston’s guides, rent a boat for a half or full day to enjoy the waters on your own, or fish from the banks on the resort’s 400-acre property. Gaston’s provides equipment rentals, too, as well as fly-fishing school for aspiring anglers. A range of accommodations means you’ll find something to suit any size group, from cozy one-bedrooms to the large River Villa cottage, which offers 10 private bedrooms, a kitchen, meeting room, patio, and more—so whether you’re planning an intimate getaway or your next family reunion, Gaston’s is a fit. Additionally, the 60-year-old resort has grown to be so much more than a fishing destination: You’ll find an award-winning restaurant, tennis court, playground, nature trails, and swimming pool on-site, too. Bathhouse Row in downtown Hot Springs.
HOT SPRINGS
While Hot Springs National Park celebrates its centennial in 2021, the city of Hot Springs has been attracting visitors from all over the United States for well over 100 years. To see why, visit Bathhouse Row and tour the historic Fordyce Bathhouse, which now serves as a museum and visitor’s center showcasing the Spa City’s heyday in the early 20th century. While several of the bathhouses are still operational spas, a couple have been repurposed, such as Superior, home to Superior Bathhouse Brewery, and Lamar, which houses the park’s gift store. Another reason for the town’s reputation as a summer getaway is its proximity to Lake Hamilton, one of the most popular residential and recreational lakes in the state. Here, houses and condos are available for rent right on the water, so you can enjoy swimming, boating, tubing, and skiing, or simply taking in the view. Whether you’re in town to explore the city or stay close to the lake, HOT SPRINGS CONDO RENTALS has properties that will suit your location and party size. Find more information and book your stay at hotspringscondorental.com.

Modern Family, Classic Style Designer Jonathan Parkey instills a sense of playful sophistication in this Little Rock family home

A custom Chippendale-inspired bannister and built-in baby gate help this home function for a young family while adhering to its polished design. The front door is “Denim Wash” by Benjamin Moore.
n early 2020, Lauren and Nate Steel started looking for a house that would suit their needs as a growing family. “Our previous home had some great outdoor living, but the family living room was very cramped and didn’t have very much light,” Lauren says. “We needed more space, and I also wanted it to be more open with plenty of room for kids to move around.” When the couple happened upon this home for sale in the Heights, Lauren invited designer Jonathan Parkey—who had helped her pull together several rooms in her previous house—to see it. Jonathan, who also owns a namesake store in the neighborhood, immediately saw potential in its classic bones and easy flow. “Lauren is pretty traditional, as is Nate, and I wanted to help them create a home that felt fitting for the older neighborhood, but also fresh and modern,” he says. To achieve this, he juxtaposed traditional elements such as antiques, stripes, and chinoiserie with clean lines and a bold combination of patterns. “We were

playing off the idea of someone walking in here and not knowing for sure whether this was once Lauren’s grandmother’s or great-grandmother’s house,” Jonathan says. “It was that feeling of blowing the dust off something old and making it new again.” Because the Steels have three children under the age of 5, keeping the look playful was also a priority. “I wanted it to be bright and fun in a way that the kids would enjoy, but also worthy of the history of the home,” Jonathan says. “This design feels timeless, and they still have the space to grow into it and entertain.” The mix of color and pattern was a welcome source of joy in a year where the family ended up spending so much time at home. “We bought this house in February 2020 when I was 8 months pregnant. I had the baby on March 12, which happened to be the day after everything shut down due to COVID,” Lauren says. “I’ve been working from home, and I spend my days pacing between the office, the dining room, and the living room. All the color just makes it really happy and interesting.”
The colors found in Schumacher’s “Lotus Garden” fabric, especially green and blue, set the tone for the entire project. “We also pulled out some of the berry colors and hot pinks to keep it a little punchier,” Jonathan says.

MASTERFUL MIX
Because the Steels had recently redecorated their previous house, they had several furnishings that served as a starting point, including a set of four deep armchairs. To incorporate the pieces in a new way, Jonathan broke up the set and recovered one pair in a blue velvet performance fabric for the living room. Similarly, the sofa is covered in a Crypton fabric. “Kids were really taken into account even though this is a formal room,” the designer says. A leather and iron chair balances out the room’s more feminine elements, and a convex mirror over the mantel pays homage to classic federal style.

MADE FOR MEMORIES
In the dining room, Jonathan was tasked with finding a table large enough to seat 12, making the room a central spot for family gatherings and supper clubs alike. Clean-lined chairs bring contemporary flair to the flame mahogany set, which Lauren plans to pass down to her oldest daughter one day. Even in this traditional room, Jonathan paid mind to the balance of sophistication and comfort that’s apparent through the home. “We went with this pasty blue color on the walls and ceiling to balance out the weight of the table,” he says. “The lucite lamps have really classic shapes with a more modern appeal, and even the gilded mirror has something a little funkier about it.”

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD
An energetic green coats the walls of the office while also appearing in various applications throughout the room, from the cut-velvet bench to the windowpane pattern on the drapes. “There’s a real mix of high and low in this house,” Jonathan says. “The plaid is almost cabinlike, then with the sisal rug, rattan chair, and an old French-style table used as a desk, it just feels really happy and collected.”

SWEET SET-UP
Woven bistro chairs are lightweight and easy to wipe down, making them a perfect perch for young ones around the breakfast table. Here, the homeowners’ children (Mary Ashley, 4, Graham, 2, and Ellen, 1) are able to stay within view of the kitchen while they snack or color. The sleek tulip table and piece of abstract art help modernize the traditional setting.

CLASSIC CUISINE
In the kitchen, Jonathan and his clients decided to keep the existing cabinetry and update the countertops, backsplash, and hardware. To make the island feel more like a focal point, they painted it blue and installed glass and nickel pendants overhead. Repetition of the cooler metal is balanced by the warmth of the hardwoods, barstools, and antique runner. “The kitchen at my old house was cut off from everything, so I cooked less,” Lauren says. “Now, with the way this one is open to the family room, the kids can be in there while I cook, and it makes life so much easier.”
The colors found in a Roman shade (Schumacher’s “Citrus Garden”) tie the neutral kitchen to the home’s bright, cheery palette.

Behind the sectional are the two remaining chairs that once coordinated with the pair in the formal living room. The comfortable seating, now covered in a preppy stripe, provides a spot for the Steels to sit and sip coffee in the mornings with a view of the backyard.

COZY CUSTOM
Adjoining the kitchen is a spacious family room complete with an oversized sectional the whole family can pile onto for movie nights. However, the star of the show is a custom painting by Little Rock artist Bryan Frazier depicting Lauren’s hometown and family farmland. “The blue line running vertically is the St. Francis River. On the left side is Wynne, and on the right side is Parkin, which is where both sides of my family are from,” she says. Also depicted in the abstract map are the church where Lauren and Nate were married, her grandparents’ homes, and a beloved lake house. “I love art that means something in respect to where I’m from. That’s just an important part of who we are,” she says.

Southern CASUAL Parkinson Building Group and Providence Design team up to create a classic, livable home his is our forever home, and we wanted to get it right,” one of the owners of this west Little Rock house says. Having raised their now college-age son in a tight-knit neighborhood, the couple looked forward to wide open spaces and natural views for their next phase of life, along with a home that would complement their down-to-earth, Southern style. After finding the perfect lot with a view of a pond and a natural hillside, they turned to Bill Parkinson and the team at Parkinson Building Group to get the ball rolling. “We knew we wanted an open plan; we aren’t a formal family,” the homeowner says, noting the dining room in their previous home was underused. After seeing another home Bill had built, they fell in love with its floor plan and made a few tweaks to customize it. “It’s really helpful when a client can walk through a previous build we’ve done and use it to help visualize their home and gain inspiration,” Bill says. As for the aesthetics, “traditional yet casual” was a phrase repeated again and again. “We wanted something that would stand the test of time. I do not want to redo this in 10 years,” one of the owners says. The owners of Providence Design, sisters

Cedar box beams, constructed onsite and finished with a decorative blending treatment, are seen throughout the main living space as well as in the master bedroom.
Talena Ray and Mona Thompson, helped them achieve the look. “Everything is about the setting here, and the entire design is oriented toward that,” says Mona, who took the lead on this project. “They wanted a timeless, classic home that was not trendy but still current—and everything had to be comfortable,” she says. Part of this lies in the neutral palette, which is accented with the traditional pairing of blue and white

throughout the home. “The palette was easy to come up with because she loves blue and white, and has a collection of pieces she wanted to display and mix with new ones as well,” Mona says. These calm, natural hues point back to the reason the couple fell in love with the setting initially. “We enjoy sitting outside, fishing, and just the quietness of this property,” one of the homeowners says.
BALANCING ACT
In the kitchen, the island’s stained cabinetry is topped with marble, while the painted perimeter cabinets have a soapstone countertop. “The contrast of the two is really pretty together, but it’s also a good balance for functionality,” Mona says, noting the marble requires more caution and care while the soapstone can stand up to pans straight from the oven. The home’s only dining space is located between the kitchen and living room. Upholstered host and hostess chairs and an eye-catching chandelier help to define the area in the open floor plan.
Reclaimed brick floors and wooden doors leading to a working pantry off the kitchen give the room the feeling of having been in place for decades. “If we have the opportunity, this is a space we try to incorporate in every home because it is just so versatile,” Mona says of the area, which includes both a wine fridge and coffee bar as well as an abundance of storage.

WELL PAIRED
“Obviously, this room is set up for symmetry,” Mona notes. “In long living rooms, you often have so much space in the middle that you can’t get the perfect sofa or coffee table, but you can do pairs.” The focal point, a wood-burning fireplace, heats the house efficiently. “Since I work from home and like to split wood, this was a musthave for me,” one of the owners says. “Because it’s sealed you can keep it going all day and the heaters will rarely come on.” Leather-bound books and commissioned pieces by local artist Tanya Sweetin fill the custom built-ins on either side of the fireplace and help artfully balance the television on the right side.
The back porch offers an unobstructed view of the property’s pond, which can be taken in from a swing bed or rocking chairs.

REFINED RETREAT
“This room is just so serene,” Mona says of the master bedroom. A Providence Design custom iron bed is complemented by an iron bench that was powder-coated to match. A mix of linens dress the bed. “The look we were going for wasn’t just beautiful; we didn’t want something that was stiff and formal. The bedding had to be cozy and comfortable,” Mona says.

ELEGANT ESCAPE
In terms of space and materials, the master bath is one of the most luxurious rooms. Largescale Calacatta porcelain tile gives a seamless presence on the floor and leads the eye to the tub where elegant draperies frame the window. “This started out as shutters because they were worried about privacy,” Mona says. “It took some convincing for us to go with the drapes, but it has turned out to be a favorite spot,” one of the homeowners says.

TAILORED TO HER
One of the changes the couple made to personalize the floor plan was the addition of his-and-hers master closets. “This was a must-have for me,” says the wife. “I love fashion, and when I come in here to get ready, I can see everything at once. It’s almost like I’m shopping my closet each morning.” Bill notes the addition of the Putnam rolling ladder was a “fun touch” for his team to add. “We planned for this from the beginning to ensure it could be installed without issue at the end of the build,” he says.

True to the home’s form, everything in the laundry room is oriented to take advantage of the view outdoors. The reclaimed brick floors seen in the pantry and soapstone countertops from the kitchen are repeated here alongside workhorse features like an apron-front sink, individual pullout baskets for each person’s laundry, and plenty of hanging, drying, and storage space. A custom-built table on casters can be used for folding clothes and also rolled out to the adjoining porch when entertaining. A vertical shiplap accent wall and café curtains bring flair to the workspace.

THE BUILDER BEHIND THE FEATURE ON PAGE 52
A Chat with Bill Parkinson From a builder’s point of view, tell us about the style of this home. We would classify this house as a Lowcountry home due to its pleasing symmetry, large porches, and broad shed roof. This is one of our favorite go-to Southern Living-style homes. What are some of your favorite material selections and features in this home? We love using Thermador appliances because they pair well with front cabinetry panels for a
customized look. We used James Hardie planks on the exterior; they give the look of wood with little maintenance. We also added Infratech heaters to the screened porch to make it usable almost year-round. Inside, we used a Fireplace Xtrordinair, which can efficiently heat the main body of the home with little effort. What do you feel sets Parkinson Building Group apart? No matter what the client asks, we figure out a
way to make it happen. We like to be involved from the beginning of a project and get to know the clients as well as possible to help them achieve their dream space. That is unique in a world that is often focused on profit over client experience. We are aware our clients are spending a lot of money to build something that they will be enjoying long after we are gone. We hear all the time that we are building a “forever home,” and we take that to heart.

7 Tips to Stay Organized While You Transition
You’ve sold your home and can’t wait to get settled in a new one. Only one big barrier lies between you and all the comforts of your next house—the move. One of the toughest parts of getting settled in a space can be keeping all your belongings organized. To help, we invited professional organizer Katie Buchanan of Little Rock Paper Scissors to share a few tips to keep everything in its place and ready to go upon arrival.
1
2
3
RESEARCH AND BOOK MOVERS EARLY. Scheduling a weekday move may mean a break in their rates, since weekends are typically their busiest times.
longer serve you so you are not paying to move unwanted goods. Start this process long before your move, and keep it up right until the final packing day. Books should be considered especially, as they are heavy and bulky. And don’t forget to toss expired pantry items and spices!
6
DESIGNATE A LARGE CLEAR BIN FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBER’S BEDROOM AND LABEL “DO NOT PACK.” This
bin should hold items that are needed right away such as a change of clothes, toiletries, and medicines as well as a set of sheets and one pillow for that bedroom.
DESIGNATE A COLOR FOR EACH ROOM AND USE COLORCOORDINATED PACKING TAPE AND NOTES ON EACH BOX. For example, use yellow duct tape for kitchen boxes
7
TRY TO SOURCE BOXES AND MOVING SUPPLIES FROM FRIENDS AND RELATIVES BEFORE PURCHASING. Make
sure to avoid overly large boxes, as they can become far too heavy to be practical. Empty boxes quickly as they arrive at the new home so they can be flattened and taken out of the way.
IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, ALLOW A MOVING COMPANY TO PACK FOR YOU. This splurge really helps the packing
process go much faster, and it also allows you to work alongside the movers making more complete lists of box contents. For example, rather than writing “Master Bath” on a box label, you can specify “Master Bath: towels and bathrobe.”
CREATE ONE “CENTER OF CHAOS” IN YOUR CURRENT HOME AND IN THE NEW HOME TO USE AS A SPACE FOR PACKING AND SORTING. If your home is two stories,
create one center on each floor. Rather than finding messes in each room, having a central station will help keep you sane. The dining room is a good drop spot because it is likely a room you will not use right away.
EDIT, EDIT, EDIT! Heavily pare down belongings that no
and tape a yellow note with a list of the contents to its side or top. If you’ve hired movers, tape a large yellow notecard labeled “kitchen” on the doorway of the new home’s kitchen in order to direct movers where to place boxes.
4
5
8
UPON ARRIVAL, MAKE ALL THE BEDS FIRST. At the end
of an exhausting moving day, you will be glad you did it early before your energy was zapped. Aside from beds the most important space to unpack and establish is the kitchen. The kitchen truly is the heartbeat of the home, and having it squared away first will give you a huge sense of accomplishment!

Coney-Campbell Team Tina Coney and Angie Campbell have been close friends for more than 25 years. After several years in real estate with Keller Williams, they decided to join forces in 2018 as an official team. “As former teachers, we have a lot of patience, the ability to problem solve, and can work with all kinds of people for a calm, smooth transaction,” Angie says. “We are very relationship-oriented. We see our clients as more than just a paycheck, but also as new friends.” The duo especially enjoys working with first-time homeowners and seniors transitioning out of “memory-filled homes,” they say. “We always want to make those processes as easy as possible under difficult circumstances,” Angie says. Both are executive brokers and are passionate about supporting small businesses. “We’re ambassadors for a new movement called Keep Local Alive, which supports local businesses in our community,” Tina says. “It can also drive more tourism, increase overall home values, and bring a much stronger sense of community.”

PATTERNS WE LOVE
A Shine to Shibori Head to any apparel shop, and you’re likely to find the tie-dye trend in abundance. While it may be all the rage today, the pattern is anything but new. A more intricate, detailed technique known as shibori, which means to press or wring, was popularized in Japan during the 17th and 18th centuries. To create the one-of-a-kind designs, a fabric piece is wrapped tightly with thread and then dyed, traditionally with indigo. The textile art produces beautiful fabrics with distinctly repetitive motifs that have become iconic. We love seeing these fabrics used on throws and pillows to add intrigue to a home’s décor. Pieces shown here available through Hillfolk Textile Studio and Shop, Bentonville, hillfolk.com.
