perfect together A few weeks ago we celebrated my nephew’s birthday with what has become the norm for birthday parties: a driveby parade complete with decorated cars, honking horns, and signs painted on poster boards. It was a spectacle for sure, one like many happening in neighborhoods across the country while people adapt their celebrations. When my husband and I parked our car and got out to watch the rest of Photograph by Rett Peek the procession behind us, I spotted my parents’ vehicle approaching: my mom, smiling in the driver’s seat, keeping the car moving steadily, and my dad, hanging out of the sunroof beside her, wielding a batterypowered bullhorn and wearing a Hawaiian shirt. They are the textbook definition of the saying “opposites attract.” Like yin and yang, they balance each other out. The homes featured in this issue are well-suited opposites, too. While Tish DeLozier’s traditional, Southern-inspired bones (page 43) and Kim Biggs’s contemporary, gallery-style layout (page 52)—both new construction homes—make abundant use of color and pattern, their applications are completely different. Still, each space is beautiful, personal, playful, and happy. And a happy home is what everyone is aiming for right now.

PS — As I write this, we have been working from home for more than six weeks. I have to give a big kudos to the At Home in Arkansas team. Through Zoom meetings, PDF proofs, and socially distanced photo shoots, we’ve managed to put out our second issue during a pandemic; no easy feat, especially while striving to keep everyone safe and on schedule. I have to hand it to them, and also say a special thank you to our advertisers whose support means more than ever to us!

DESIGN UPDATES

What’s New? TIPTON & HURST STATEWIDE

If you’ve been itching to test out your green thumb indoors, you’re in luck—Tipton & Hurst has recently launched a Green Plant of the Month subscription service. The offering is in addition to their already-in-place Design of the Month subscription, which features a monthly floral arrangement delivery. The florist decided to launch this sister program in response to customer demand after the arrival of COVID-19 in Arkansas. “Besides their obvious beauty, green plants offer a number of physical and mental health benefits,” says Chris Norwood, lead designer at Tipton & Hurst. “Our society seems to be experiencing a newfound respect for houseplants.” The program consists of several options: Choose your frequency (three, six, nine, or 12 months) and value ($35, $55, or $75 per month). For every month of your subscription, you’ll receive a new houseplant—which could be any variety from a peace lily or orchid to a succulent—delivered to your door, along with instructions on how to care for it. Chris leaves us with one main piece of advice for maintaining houseplants: “Remember, you can always hydrate a plant back to life, but if you overwater it and rot the root system, it’ll never recover,” he says. “When it comes to plants, less is more.” For more information and to sign up, visit tiptonhurst.com. TIPS FROM BETTER LAWNS & GARDENS

Get the Perfect Outdoor Space While spending more time at home than ever before, I’m sure you are seeing all of your spaces in a much different way. I know I am. With that in mind, if you are embarking on a new build or a remodel, why not put a little extra thought into that outdoor space or front entry so you enjoy your home that much more? While you’re home dreaming up your perfect outdoor living space, consider these three things:

1.

Where does my family gravitate to when we are outside? Focus your energy and resources toward improving that space.

2.

What colors would I like to see in my landscape when I look outside?

3.

If I added one feature that allowed me to extend my living area to the outdoors, what would it be?

David Munsey, III, general manager of Better Lawns & Gardens, shares tips for gardening, landscaping, and more on our blog. Visit athomearkansas.com/blog.

These are three things we like to start thinking about when helping someone envision a space. Hopefully this will encourage you to think about what areas outside your home could use a little love. Remember, we’re always here to help with your outdoor living and landscape needs! —David Munsey, III

However, as much as they loved the new space, they were eager to make a few updates to give the home a more current feel—and to make it their own. “They realized the kitchen was an area they could tackle pretty quickly,” says designer Sarah Finley of Finley Design Group. Sarah, who worked in corporate design for a number of years before getting her contractor’s

license, formed Finley Design Group in 2014. Here, she and Heather Fuller, who has a background in both design and furniture retail, work side-by-side on projects of all sizes from concept to completion. The pair’s goal for this renovation was to make the room more user-friendly while adding sophistication. Previously, the kitchen had limited space and included an island with no room for seating. To remedy this, Sarah and Heather relocated the adjacent laundry room to a nearby, under-used craft room, allowing them to expand the footprint of the

Also on the family’s wish list were more windows to bring light into the space and the ability to see the living room’s television from the kitchen. The bay window was existing, but Sarah and Heather were able to add a second window to the space where the sink was previously located. They also expanded a cased opening to allow for greater

In making these structural changes, it was also a goal to stay in line with the home’s architectural style. “This is a very traditional house with lots of detailed molding and classic features, so we wanted to be true to that,” Sarah says. From the neutral palette to the timeless dining table, the new design fits within the context of the home. “It helps that we do the construction, because we design the space with the end in mind. We can go out and shop at our local places while the work is in progress and find what really works,” Heather says.

GO FOR THE GOLD

Large polished brass pendants add a current feel over the island. The open framework style keeps the room feeling light and ensures the view to the dining area and living room beyond are not blocked.

2

SEAT YOURSELF

The homeowners wanted the barstools to have backs for comfort and be easy to clean while both Heather and Sarah thought it was important they add dimension to the design. A gray option with a low-profile back and seats that wipe clean checks all the boxes.

FORM MEETS FUNCTION

As a busy family of five, practicality was top of mind in the design. A restaurant-style pull-down faucet allows whoever has dish duty to rinse plates and scrub pots easily. Moreover, the industrial design adds a hint of edge to the space.

OFF THE GRID

“We wanted to see the whole kitchen and not just have the backsplash jump out,” Heather says of the tile, a handmade neutral subway selection. White grout makes for a seamless look, while laying it in a straight herringbone pattern adds interest.

In a time of social distancing and delayed events, it ’s nice to know your neighbors still care.

Local creative entrepreneur Julielle Sears has found a way to show some love while still staying apart through decorative door wreaths featuring bright blooms. “You can arrange these wreaths and deliver them to friends with a tin of cookies to bless them during this time,” she says. Julielle, who was an art major in college, has used her background to dip her brush into numerous creative fields, including wedding floral design and interior design as well as painting. “I think the reason I’m so creative is because of my mom, Fran Vaught. She is incredibly creative and always taught me and encouraged me,” Julielle says. Although she is a native Arkansan, as a military wife (her husband, Ben, is a major in the Army) she has learned to innovatively use her talents as the family moves around the U.S. frequently to serve. Her most recent endeavor is Tailor and Dwell, a partnership with her friend Erin Jacob, who lives in Houston. The two have teamed up to teach people how to be content in their current space, even if it’s not their dream home. Via phone consultations and Zoom sessions, the pair offer advice and renderings for how to create a house you love, which is, perhaps, more important now than ever. Read on for Julielle’s tips to make a fresh floral wreath for a neighbor’s front door—or your own! >>>

START WITH A GOOD BASE

Start with a floral wreath form soaked in water. Julielle recommends setting the wet form on an easel or hanging it on a wall to see how it will look and hold together when complete. Cover the form with foliage. “I used ruscus, seeded eucalyptus, silver dollar eucalyptus, and dusty miller as my base. I also suggest using any foliage you find in your yard! Adding variation is key,” she says.

L I F E

You may have many of these items (or easy substitutions) on hand in your home. Fresh blooms from your garden or silk flowers you already own will also help to make good use of supplies.

BRING IN THE BLOOMS

Create three groups of flowers: large, medium, and small. You’ll want three to five large blooms to group together to create a focal point on the wreath. “I suggest using these off-center on the bottom or on one of the sides,” Julielle says. Here, she used dahlias, but peonies and hydrangeas are also readily available selections. From there, add in medium blooms, such as tulips, ranunculi, or spray roses, around the wreath. Continue the process with smaller blooms, including bougainvillea, wax flower, or button mums, to evenly distribute color. Finish it with a final layer of greenery or berries to add texture and fill in any bare areas. When placing the flowers and greenery, be mindful not to pull stems in and out; it will create air pockets in the foam. Use floral wire to hang the wreath and continue to spritz with water to keep the blooms looking their best.

sure my sister and I asked more than once when it would finally be ready to eat. Decades later, after trying my hand at the family recipe for the first time, I learned why the task requires some level of patience—even for adults. With bananas, lemons, and oranges in the mix, the treat has a decidedly tropical taste, and I wasn’t sure how or why our Texan side of the family started making it. So I called my grandmother, Josie Gray (known by her grandchildren as “Neena”), to find out. As it turns out, we have my great aunt and great uncle, Mary Dee and

RECIPE

Aunt Mary Dee’s Ice Cream While this ice cream is delicious on its own, it can also be enjoyed with vanilla wafers, lemon cookies, or banana bread.

SHOP

4 ripe bananas 3 cups sugar 4 oranges, juiced (about 1¼ cup) 3 lemons, juiced (about ¾ cup) 3 cups whole milk 3 cups heavy cream 2 bags ice, crushed 1 box ice cream salt mint leaves for garnish (optional)

PREPARE

Combine bananas and sugar in a medium bowl, mashing bananas with a potato masher or wooden spoon. Add juice from oranges and lemons and mix well. Pour milk and heavy cream into an electric ice-cream maker’s canister, then add fruit and sugar mixture. Freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. As the canister spins, continue to layer salt and ice in the bucket for the duration of churning, about 30-40 minutes. When ice cream is finished churning, use a spoon to dislodge any pieces of banana from the dasher. Scoop into cups or cones, garnishing with mint if desired. Store in freezer in an airtight container.

My mother’s aunt and uncle loved to travel, and on one of their visits to somewhere beachy (like much of family lore, details on the exact location are fuzzy) they’d become enthralled with a certain ice cream flavor. “Your Uncle Oren could finagle anything out of anybody,” Neena laughed as she relayed the story to me. “They loved that ice cream, so they asked for the recipe.” While some effort goes into juicing the citrus and keeping an eye on the maker as it churns, it’s worth it for the end result. “We’ve been using that recipe for about 45 years now,” Neena said. “After you make it, you’ll see why we save it for special occasions.”

THE NEW CONSTRUCTION ISSUE

Home Inspired by her native South Carolina, Tish wanted the exterior of the home to mimic a Charleston row house.

’m a colorful person,” Tish DeLozier says. Upon entering the home she shares with her husband, Patrick, and their three young children, you get an immediate sense of happy at the first sightings of pink, green, orange, and turquoise. “Turquoise is a favorite of mine, so it’s in every room,” she says with a smile. And while the rainbow of hues might be the first thing to catch your eye, thoughtfully executed details, inviting layouts, and efficient organization don’t go unnoticed as you move through the home the DeLoziers built just two years ago. Tish, who orchestrated the build and worked closely with the contractor, says she has always had a passion for design but never pursued a degree in the field. A few years after marrying, she and Patrick moved from Augusta, Georgia (where they first met), to Texas. There, they remodeled a ranch-style home, an experience that fully rekindled her love of design.

44 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

CHARACTER & COLOR

Traditional trim and panel molding bring character to the living room and continue up the staircase and throughout the home. “I think molding gives a home a touch of character; it’s one of the things I enjoyed thinking about from the start of the design,” Tish says. This classic architectural feature is balanced with a heavy dose of cheerful color. A Manuel Canovas fabric seen on the chairs was the starting point for the room’s furnishings. Orange cocktail tables from Oomph along with the pair of light turquoise sofas pull out specific hues found in the pattern, further enlivening the room. Over the fireplace hangs a painting of a South Carolina waterway Patrick gifted Tish one year for Christmas.

June 2020 | athomearkansas.com 45

Upon moving to Arkansas in 2014, the couple decided to build in Chenal Valley. “I really loved that house, but I always thought we rushed through it,” Tish says. She notes the couple made some changes while keeping other aspects the same when they found their current lot in the Heights neighborhood and decided to build once more. “With this house, we took a lot of time with the plans and design on the front end.” For example, this time around they opted for single-car garages rather than one bay along with individual interior spaces for both him and her. “He got a room just for him at the back of the house, and I got my dream bath,” Tish laughs. “Both the remodel we did in Texas and our two builds here in Arkansas were learning experiences, and I’m excited to use that knowledge to help other people now as I move into a new chapter by opening my design business,” she says.

Patrick works in the golf industry, so his study is outfitted with memorabilia from his time working at August National.

46 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

IN THE FLOW

“We knew we wanted an open concept plan where the kitchen, dining room, and living room all flowed into one another,” Tish says. “It gives us the ability to engage each other in any of these three spaces.” To this point, the centrally located dining table, which she had custom painted while living in Texas, is not only the gathering spot for dinner but also for homework and craft sessions. She chose to continue the marble countertops upward onto the backsplash to create a clean, seamless appearance. This effect is echoed by cabinetry panels, which conceal large appliances as well as a microwave and drink station. Underfoot, durable wood plank floors add to the home’s traditional bones. “With three kids and two dogs, hardwoods have always worked well for us,” Tish says.

HIS MEETS HERS

Tish notes the master bedroom is equal parts feminine and masculine. “I was originally planning to do the blush grasscloth on the walls only, but I liked it so much we kept going across the ceiling,” she says. She relocated the green-andwhite graphic print drapes from another room to balance the light girlish hue of the wallcovering. Another favorite print from Manuel Canovas covers the chair; its cosmopolitan influence is complemented by a work from an artist from Patrick’s native South America, an additional nod to the shared influence throughout the room.

AVIARY INSPIRATION

“I wanted a bath where I could spend time,” Tish says of the master en suite, which features a soaking tub, rainfall shower system, and double vanities. “This wallpaper [“Hummingbirds” from Cole & Son] totally puts me at peace. I can take a nice, warm bath and relax here,” she adds. Marble laid in varying patterns covers the room’s surfaces, adding visual interest while still giving an overall calming effect. Tish custom designed all of the home’s doors to feature molding as well as sophisticated crystal knobs.

SOPHISTICATED SURPRISE

In the downstairs powder bath, Thibaut’s “Luzon” wallpaper is a fun surprise for guests. “I absolutely fell in love with this paper and thought a powder bath was the perfect place to use it,” Tish says. A custom vanity with a raised panel design complements the wallcovering’s scene while a shapely mirror and sconces complete the look.

TUCKED IN BRIGHTLY

Designer Chandler Bailey of B. Interiors worked with Tish to source several pieces throughout the home, including the upholstered daybed in the couple’s daughter Kennedy Elizabeth’s room. Bolster pillows featuring a hot air balloon motif bring a whimsical touch, while a pink-and-white mirror and light fixture are sophisticated enough to grow with the room’s changes over time. Watercolors by Little Rock artist Ashley Saer are seen on the far wall.

50 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

“I thought this print was something that could grow with him because it doesn’t feel babyish; it’s almost like graffiti.”

ALL ABOARD

Upstairs, bright hues carry into 8-year-old Lucas’s room. “In our last house, I was starting to work on his room and found this train wallpaper from Schumacher,” Tish says. “He has always loved trains, and I thought this print was something that could grow with him because it doesn’t feel babyish; it’s almost like graffiti.” Sherwin-Williams’ “Raindrop” on the walls and ceiling—again a nod to Tish‘s love of the color turquoise—and custom bedding finish out the design. Lucas and his younger brother, Henry, share the adjoining bath, which also features a bold wallpaper above the chair rail.

Kim’s oldest son, Beau Jones (also known as Jonesboro artist Beautox Art), created the pair of black-andwhite paintings flanking the fireplace as well as the largescale watercolor for this room.

THIS IS THE PLACE

In the living room, which is open to the second level of the house, a colorful piece of optical art by Nashville artist Gina Julian takes center stage over the mirrored fireplace. Each of the furnishings has a sculptural element, from the conical legs of the coffee table to the futuristic chandelier overhead. A contemporary take on the rolled-arm sofa offers a place to sit back and take it all in. 52 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

THE ART OF STYLE

In Jonesboro, designer Kim Biggs creates a contemporary home inspired by her passion for art and love of family June 2020 | athomearkansas.com 53

Walking into the home of Kim and Brian Biggs feels a little like walking into an art museum. Eye-catching paintings grace nearly every wall; sculptural furniture and accessories take on an artful air; and, of course, bright white walls serve as a backdrop for it all. “I have a lot of artwork, and about 90 percent of it is original, so I wanted it to pop. I wanted it to feel like you were at a gallery,” Kim says. “And because the architecture is so structural, I wanted the contrast to be bold.” While Kim and Brian have remodeled several homes over the years, this was their first new construction project. Building fresh allowed them to handpick a property with a zero-lot line, a big plus for a couple who loves to travel and didn’t want a large lawn to maintain. It also allowed Kim, who opened her design business three years ago, to try her hand at a more contemporary style. “I love so many different styles—I could have 10 different homes and they would all be totally different,” she laughs, noting that their previous home had a midcentury flair. One of the challenges of creating the home came in reconciling its contemporary design with a comfortable sensibility where Kim, Brian, and their 17-year-old, Mason, could truly live day to day. “I love the clean, open, airy feel of all the white, but I didn’t want people to feel like they couldn’t relax,” Kim says. Warm metal accents, creamy neutrals, layers of texture, and gray flooring help achieve that coziness amid the simplified backdrop. “When people come over and they’re lounging, they tell us our house is so cozy and homey,” Kim says. “That’s a big compliment to a designer—when someone says, I could really live here.”

54 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

Pieces ascending the stairwell by (from left) Angela Chrusciaki Blehm, Ashley Longshore, and Beau Jones offer a peek at Kim’s eclectic taste as soon as you step foot in the front door.

THE IN CROWD

Kim and her family enjoy weekly dinners here at the hub of it all. “This is a great home to entertain in because it has a flow,” she says. On the wall, another crowd is gathered—this one featuring celebrities and characters painted by Kyra Kendall. “When I buy art, I don’t do it just to fill a space; I want it to help me remember something special,” Kim says of the collection. From Britney Spears to Bradley Cooper, each of the portraits represents a memorable experience.

When temperatures allow, the Biggs familly can slide open these doors and let the party flow onto the patio.

In keeping with the home’s contemporary vibe, white acrylic cabinet doors with frosted glass open upward for a sleek, modern take on kitchen storage.

CENTER OF IT ALL

The show-stopping Dalmata marble countertop was one of the first purchases Kim made for the house. “We knew we wanted a waterfall side for the island in something black and white,” Kim says. “If you’ve ever picked out stone, you know that if you like what you see, you better go ahead and get it—you might never see it again.” A vintage runner between the range and island as well as a piece of neon art hanging near doors to the walk-in pantry bring a dash of color to the spaces.

June 2020 | athomearkansas.com 57

“One of my favorite things about design is when someone lets me take them all the way to the end. From different textures to layers, I love every detail.” —Kim Biggs

BE THEIR GUEST

In an upstairs guest room, Beau painted a black-and-white mural on the walls to mimic wallpaper. A gold drum shade and studded headboard give the room a glam-meets-rock ’n’ roll flair. “A lot of times, guest rooms are the last spaces to get finished, but this was one of the first for us,” Kim says. “I wanted to make sure it felt like a special place to stay.” The hospitality continues around the corner at a snack and beverage bar (right) originally meant to be a linen closet.

58 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

By swapping accordion doors for built-in cabinets and a gold tile backsplash, this space became a focal point that is also more useful for the family.

FUN & FRESH

A chartreuse grasscloth wallcovering sets the tone in the laundry room. “Doing laundry is not fun, but I spend a lot of time in there, so I wanted it to be beautiful. That’s another room where people tend to close the door and neglect it, but you should make it somewhere you enjoy being,” Kim says. Black cabinetry not only provides useful storage space, but also helps camouflage the dark appliances. The kitchen’s hardware is repeated here for continuity.

June 2020 | athomearkansas.com 59

MASTER COMFORT

While Kim toned down the color in the master bedroom, she did not shy away from making a statement. A custom canopy bed anchors the room and incorporates the black and brass accents seen throughout the house. “I wanted this room to have warmth, so I didn’t want any color other than black, creams, and whites,” Kim says. A neutral wallpaper with metallic details adds interest behind the bed, and a blind contour drawing of Andy Warhol by artist Cindi Zimmerman over the bedside chest is in keeping with the room’s simplified palette.

60 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

SOOTHING TONES

In the master bath, the home’s gray flooring is replaced with a polished tile that continues up the wall behind the bathtub. Five small vases suspended from the ceiling give Kim the opportunity to add pops of color with bright blooms from time to time; here, she kept it all white. “That was something I drew from a hotel we stayed in on one of our trips. When we’re traveling, I’m always looking for design ideas,” Kim says. The “Peanuts”-inspired piece in the water closet and a line drawing called “The Kiss” (below) are more gifts created by Beau.

Q&A WITH THE BUILDER

A Chat with Bill Parkinson Q. FROM A BUILDER’S POINT OF VIEW, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THIS HOME?

More photos of this home featured in the January/February issue of At Home in Arkansas can be found at parkinsonbuildinggroup.com under Gallery.

A. The purity of the design. The owner, decorator, architect, and I were all on the same page and, as a result, the house has a feeling of purpose and ease. I’ve been to the home several times since completion, you can feel that the flow and the way the owners planned for the spaces to be used really works. Q. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE QUESTIONS CLIENTS SHOULD ASK WHEN CHOOSING A BUILDER? A. The key is to be honest with yourself when determining your main goals. Whether it’s meeting budgets and timelines or showing creativity and flexibility, interview for that quality. While we at Parkinson Building Group are constantly evolving to give a more well rounded experience, we definitely have developed a reputation for working towards a balanced experience. Q. WHAT DO YOU FEEL SETS PARKINSON BUILDING GROUP APART?

Contact Bill Parkinson of Parkinson Building Group at (501) 954-8570 or visit parkinsonbuildinggroup.com.

A. No matter what the client asks, we figure out a way to make it happen. That is unique in a world that is focused on profit over client experience. We are aware that our clients are spending a lot of money to build something they will be enjoying a long time. We hear all the time that we are building a “forever home,” and we take that to heart.

ALL ABOUT BALANCE

How to Love Your Landscape Whether you’re remodeling or starting a new construction project, involving a landscape professional is key to loving the end result. “It’s never too early to start thinking about landscaping,” says Zak Grothe of The Good Earth Garden Center. “We partner with builders early in the process to ensure our design works seamlessly with the home’s exterior as well as the unique landscape challenges that come with each project.” In the home seen here, Good Earth worked with the homeowner and builder to create a design that not only meets the challenge of a hilly landscape, but also provides a setting the homeowner can appreciate coming home to every day. “I can’t describe how impressed I am with the design and installation team at Good Earth,” the homeowner says. “They took a steep and bare mountainside and turned it into an oasis. They used boulders, shrubs, flowers, and trees to accent the best features of the house and create a natural landscape that looks as though it was there all along.” This mix of natural materials is important for both an attractive design and a functional one. “Often, there are challenging slopes to contend with, and utilizing stone can help tame them in an aesthetically pleasing way,” Zak says, noting that the mix of evergreen, deciduous, and seasonal plants here also increases interest. “Beautiful stones are a hallmark of the Natural State, so we always look for a way to incorporate these unique elements on every project we design and build.” Contact The Good Earth Garden Center at (501) 868-4666, visit thegoodearthgarden.com, or plan a trip to the garden center at 15601 Cantrell Road in Little Rock.

CREATE YOUR DREAM SPACE

Functional & Unforgettable Founded in 2017, Restructure Design in Hot Springs Village is unique in that its team functions as both designers as well as construction specialists. “We start our consultations with all clients by discussing the scope of work, which leads to a conversation about budget and timeline,” says founder and lead designer Alissa Oates. “By planning out the details in the beginning, this leads to better efficiency and, overall, a 68 At Home in Arkansas | June 2020

better end result.” Restructure Design aims to help homeowners improve functionality in their homes—particularly in kitchens and baths, the hardest-working rooms of the house. “I love to help people design their personal spaces by organizing their inspirations into a tailored design concept,” she says, noting that space planning and storage options are key when designing to get

the most out of a space. Finally, it’s important that the design process be enjoyable, not stressful, no matter the size of the project. “We are here to help make the remodeling process easier, and seeing the final product of a finished space is always very rewarding,” Alissa says. Industry experts share emerging styles for all aspects of the home

“We are seeing design trends swing back to more traditional, but still streamlined, styles, as well as brighter colors. We are also using warmer tones on walls.” —JULIE NICHOLS, LEAD DESIGNER, STATEMENTS FOR THE HOME

“The peace and tranquility a water feature adds to any outdoor space is hard to beat. The newest features are created with unique, hand-selected boulders to have their own one-of-a-kind look and sound expression… yes, they communicate to you and create an amazing ambience. Also, these features are easy to care for because they are pond-less and have auto fills, so no more pond cleaning and dragging the hose to fill it up!”

—ZAK GROTHE, LANDSCAPE MANAGER, THE GOOD EARTH GARDEN CENTER

“So many of our new-construction clients are asking for mudrooms or dedicated entry rooms when they come in from the garage. Many times these include built-in cubbies or lockers so each member of the family has a drop zone for bags, sports equipment, and jackets.”

— RON HARRIS, OWNER, SUMMERWOOD INC. “Organic best describes the look and feel of today’s interior design, in texture and shape, as well as the open floor plan. The concept says welcome home … bringing our family and friends together.”

—PAULA STORY, DESIGN CENTER MANAGER, LUMBER ONE HOME CENTER

“We are starting to see new versions of shaker door styles emerge in the cabinetry industry. One that we particularly love is the ‘Slim Shaker’ from Wynnbrooke Cabinetry. It’s still simple, but has a more transitional detail.” —ALISSA OATES, OWNER AND DESIGNER, RESTRUCTURE DESIGN

“The past few months has—more than any other time—shown people what they like and dislike about their homes. In the kitchen, we are seeing people want ease of use when it comes to appliances, storage and cleaning. In the bath, nice roomy showers, LED-lighted mirrors, and heated floors continue to top the list.”

—DOUG GILMORE, OWNER, GILMORE’S CUSTOM KITCHENS “Neutral palettes combined with a minimalist approach will be dominating factors in 2020 new builds. The kitchen is now the ‘meeting place,’ so open floor plans continue to make for a harmonious environment.”

—STEPHEN GARRETT, ACCREDITED INTERIOR DESIGN PROFESSIONAL, KAUFMAN BY DESIGN WEST “I have been watching the markets closely and have noticed a strong swing toward color. In particular, I love a brilliant claret paired with navy and emerald that is offset with fabrics for chairs and pillows in softer shades or splashes of these hues. The consensus seems to be that we are ready for color and more celebration of home and life!”

—SANDY SUTTON, OWNER, SANDY SUTTON’S DESIGN CENTER

“One big trend we are seeing is the incorporation of outdoor kitchens that really function the same as your indoor kitchen. That along with what we feel like is creating a full outdoor experience in your backyard are probably the two most soughtafter goals of our clients. With that being said, functionality for a specific homeowner’s needs still remains a constant in any design.”

COLLECTIONS

english icon Josiah Wedgwood had been operating his pottery business in Staffordshire, England, for over a decade when in 1774, through numerous experiments, he came up with the ideal formula for an unglazed stoneware. He called the new pieces Jasperware because their hardness resembled a natural jasper stone. Now, some 246 years later, the Wedgwood brand’s Jasperware is an iconic and easily recognizable collection. The pieces feature white reliefs of varied forms—from Greek goddesses to George Washington—and have been produced in a variety of colors, including lilac, yellow, green, black, and blue. However, if you’ve heard of “Wedgwood Blue,” you can guess which became the most popular and still remains emblematic. Dubbed the “Father of English Potters,” Wedgwood’s legacy lives on as porcelain place settings and decorative pieces, including Jasperware, are still produced in England today and exported around the globe.
