When I reflect on my perceptions about home building before I joined the At Home in Arkansas team nearly four years ago, I remember thinking everything seemed to happen almost by magic. Where there was once an empty lot—poof!—now there’s a brand-new home. Working with interior designers and builders day in and day out is like a peek behind the curtain, and what I see behind the scenes actually makes the whole process seem even more remarkable. For example, the first time I walked through Catherine and Dr. John Sims’s home in Rockwater (page 68), I marvelled at the view beyond the windows, the floating staircase, and the rich combination of black and walnut in the kitchen. I also admired the cool layered effect of the island: a black base with a waterfall of walnut over it. I assumed it was a purely decorative design. Months later, when I spoke to designer Meridith Ranouil about the kitchen, she described how that piece came to be—how during framing, the island was deemed too small to offer the seating the homeowners desired, but it was impossible to enlarge because of the size of the room. The designer described this as a “problem that created an opportunity,” and I was struck by not only the ingenuity, but also the positive thinking behind the solution. Similar examples of this resourcefulness abound in this issue, even in the stories that are not about new construction—like in a kitchen remodel where losing a walk-in pantry actually gained one family more storage space (page 27), or the thoughtful progression of a blank backyard into a three-zoned retreat for another (page 33). I’m delighted time and time again by the creativity of Arkansans when it comes to their homes, and, as always, I’m honored to share their stories here. Happy reading!

General Manager, Better Lawns & Gardens

Tell us a bit about your business and areas of expertise. My father founded Better Lawns & Gardens in 2002. After earning a degree in horticulture from the University of Arkansas, I joined the team to help design landscapes and unique outdoor living spaces. We specialize in everything from plantings to pool design, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and more. How are you making your mark in The Natural State? I have always loved being outside, and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to design outdoor living spaces that can positively impact someone’s lifestyle and help them enjoy being outside as much as I do. We take a lot of pride in customizing projects for the client; I don’t feel like we’ve ever built two spaces that are exactly the same. It excites me to see how unique each one can be and how it can completely reflect the owner’s personality and style. What are some of the benefits clients get when working with your team? We understand you are trusting us with your money to create a dream space—and we don’t take that lightly. We work hard to ensure there is good communication and the end result is something you’ll enjoy for years to come.

A designated coffee space was a must-have on David’s wish list for the renovation. Custom wood shelves that match the trim on the hood provide storage and bring character to the design. Extending the backsplash all the way up the wall brings visual interest.

“Basil” by SherwinWilliams

A

bundant storage and seating for the whole family were top priorities when Rachel and David Stafford hired Shine Interior Design’s Natalie Biles and Stacey Breezeel to reimagine their kitchen. “They love to entertain and host gatherings, and they wanted to get more from this space,” Natalie says. One of the biggest problems was shallow-depth cabinetry that could not hold the couple’s dishes. “They were using the walk-in pantry to store all their dishes and cookware, and that was eating into their food storage,” Natalie says. To solve this problem, the kitchen was gutted and new cabinetry that extends to the ceiling was installed. On the base cabinets, Rachel opted for roomy drawers—which allow her to see all of their contents easily—for pots, pans, and plates. A cramped island was traded for a more spacious version with room for barstools as well as an uninterrupted workspace for meal prep, craft projects, and homework.

28 At Home in Arkansas | June 2021

Perhaps the most surprising move of the renovation came in eliminating the walk-in pantry—the room’s biggest storage space. In doing this, Natalie and Stacey were able to relocate the refrigerator to that wall and create a built-in pantry near the stove. This also allowed for a larger expanse of cabinetry around the refrigerator as well as a designated space for the microwave. Of course, it’s hard not to notice the kitchen’s style at first glance. “Stacey and I had carried around this swatch for a while, thinking of how perfect it would be on kitchen cabinets,” Natalie says of the green paint color. She shared it with Rachel, who decided to go for the bold yet cheerful hue. The blue seen on the wishbone barstools was used in the nearby laundry and repeated here to connect the rooms. “We were delighted to work on this project and with how it turned out,” Natalie says. “They trusted us so fully, and I think when you trust your designer you get an outcome that is stunning.”

PLAY AND STAY

Growing Over Time In Fayetteville, designer Casey Sarkin’s backyard escape offers spaces to enjoy inside, outside, and in-between WRITER & STYLIST STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK

he backyard of Casey and Steffan Sarkin’s Fayetteville home has come a long way since they first laid eyes on it almost two decades ago. Then, the area behind the house—part of three acres the home sits on—was nothing more than overgrown brush and a chainlink fence. “When we moved in, we remodeled the interiors but didn’t really do much to the outside, just cleaned it all up,” Casey says. “There was no back porch, no pool, nothing.” Almost 10 years later, with kids starting middle and high school, the family turned their focus to the outdoors. At one end of the house, they enclosed a screened porch to create a sunroom, then extended the roofline to form a back porch the entire length of the house. The backyard was excavated and leveled to install a pool, and all the landscaping was planted— including one of Casey’s favorites, hydrangeas.

34 At Home in Arkansas | June 2021

“These are ‘Nikko Blue.’ They start out barely pink, then become full-on fuchsia, then go to lavender, a deep, bright blue-purple, then a wine color in the fall,” she says, noting the wall of flowers served as a colorful backdrop for everything from prom photos to graduation parties during that season of life. In 2019, the designer embarked on a final phase of transformation for the backyard: Converting their three-car garage into a pool house. “We initially started that so we could have a bathroom for the pool, but because Steffan and I both have such large extended families, it also became a place we could have guests come stay,” she says. Without changing its footprint, Casey was able to carve out a living room, kitchen, dining area, bedroom, and full bath in the renovated space, all within steps of the pool and with a view to the beautiful backyard, 20 years in the making.

BACK PORCH COZY

The back porch’s living area is a true extension of the home’s interiors thanks to comfortable furnishings, such as a sectional slipcovered in outdoor fabric, and a board-andbatten wall treatment continued from inside the home. “The whole feeling of white, light, and neutral with woven textures very much mimics the rest of my house,” Casey says. A farmhouse table paired with a vintage light fixture brings a mix of styles to the dining space, which is in close proximity to both the kitchen and grill for easy entertaining.

EAST COAST COOL

While Casey’s personal style tends more modern, she wanted to create an outdoor design that would stand the test of time. “I wanted it to feel very classic with finishes that really don’t go out of style,” she says, noting she looked to the East Coast and the Hamptons for inspiration. “Case in point, that pool is 10-plus years old and still looks current.” Wicker Kingsley Bate loungers and chairs, an antique outdoor table, and a fringed umbrella add a touch of coastal flair.

POOL HOUSE STYLE

Casey’s global aesthetic is apparent in the pool house, where collected furniture and art effortlessly mix. An authentic Morroccan rug and blown-up photograph of Capri (taken by Steffan) speak to the couple’s love of travel. Sliding glass doors provide an uninterrupted view of the pool and, when opened, further connect the converted garage to the action outside.

The board-and-batten treatment seen on the back porch continues in the pool house, this time running vertically to visually enlarge the space.

Hot Springs is a city steeped in tradition. Visit the historic lakeside town any time of year and you’ll find experiences that draw you back again and again. For example, the start of the horse racing season at OAKLAWN RACING CASINO RESORT (oaklawn. com) in January brings thousands of patrons to the track to enjoy the sport—as well as the atmosphere, camaraderie, and corned beef sandwiches that go along with it—well throughout spring. Another annual draw to the city is GARVAN WOODLAND GARDENS (garvangardens.org), where tulips burst into bloom in early spring and color continues to fill the gardens into autumn. This 210-acre botanical garden is also home to numerous architectural structures, including the breathtaking Anthony Chapel, which beautifully complements the gardens. In the summer, families from near and far flock to LAKE HAMILTON for long days spent on the water.

As a recreational lake, homes, condos, and even restaurants are built right on the banks, and the water is open to swimming, boating, and activities like skiing and tubing. For a different kind of lake tour, book a sightseeing cruise on the BELLE OF HOT SPRINGS (belleriverboat.com). And, though it’s one of the city’s newer traditions, the HOT SPRINGS DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL (hsdfi. org) in the fall has become a cultural draw for the area. Founded in 1992, it’s the longest-running documentary festival in North America and is known to attract filmmakers from all over the world. Every year, Arkansans join them for the festival’s screenings, workshops, panels, and parties, and this year will be no different; since October 2021 marks the festival’s 30th anniversary, you can be sure celebrations are in store. Read on for our favorite places to shop, design, dine, and stay in Hot Springs.

MADE FOR THEM

A Perfect Blend A Little Rock couple turns to B. Interiors and Richard Harp Homes to build a custom home perfectly suited to both their tastes WRITER TIFFANY ADAMS PHOTOGR APHER RE T T PEEK ST YLIST STEPH SMITH

June 2021 | athomearkansas.com 51

The home’s happy palette starts in the entry where an antique demilune table is covered with a bright fringed skirt. A work by Little Rock artist Ashley Saer hangs on the wall.

hen Catherine Young and her husband, Dan, became engaged, one question loomed large: Where would they live? At the time, she had a home in west Little Rock while Dan was in a Heights house he had purchased almost two decades prior. After considering his fondness for his neighborhood and her desire to be within walking distance of shops and restaurants, they decided to combine their lives at Dan’s—but not in that exact house. To get the updates and square footage they wanted, they knew it would be best to start from scratch. “Dan also really wanted something that was ours,” Catherine says of the desire to build. “What we did was create a high-performing, energy-efficient home that really works for them,” builder Richard Harp says. “Anytime an old structure comes down, we want to be sensitive to that and the memories that are coming down with it. Here, we were able to recreate a 100-year-old home that can be enjoyed for at least five generations to come,” he adds. In the plans, the Youngs opted for an open-concept main floor where all the living areas

W

flow one into another, a feature conducive to their lifestyle—especially with 1-year-old son Clark now in the picture—and that would have been almost impossible to create in the lot’s former home. Building also gave them the luxury of customizing spaces, including a home office for him upstairs and one for her downstairs, along with separate closets and two laundry spaces. During the build, the couple also realized they would need help to blend their styles and craft an interior that reflects their tastes. “They are complete opposites in style,” designer Chandler Bailey of B. Interiors says. “Dan leans traditional, while Catherine is more glamorous and whimsical.” Chandler’s challenge was in marrying these two aesthetics to create a family home they both loved. “One thing I try hard to do in every project is create a cohesive feel and flow throughout a house, so you can tell there’s a plan that carries through it,” Chandler says, noting the mix of new and old. “Here, we created a feminine family home that mixes his and her style but is still elegant at the same time. It truly feels like their house,” the designer says.

STYLE IN BLOOM

“We love to entertain and use our china,” Catherine says. “Even though a lot of new houses don’t have them, we wanted a formal dining room because we knew we would use it.” In this room in particular, Chandler was not only able to meld styles but also weave together meaningful pieces from the couple’s families. For example, the chandelier and mirror came from Catherine’s parents while the table and buffet are pieces from the house where Dan grew up. The lilac and blue palette and playful floral fabric keep the design fresh.

LIGHT, BRIGHT & PRACTICAL

“This is a primo kitchen,” Richard says. “They are both fabulous cooks and have an herb garden out back, so we designed it to play to that.” A passthrough window over the sink makes handing steaks and burgers out to the grill easy, while an expansive island offers plenty of seating for indoor meals. The simple white palette and gold finishes balance with the color seen in the adjoining living spaces.

June 2021 | athomearkansas.com 55

GREENING UP

“I knew this space was a good opportunity to go bold,” Chandler says of the butler’s pantry between the dining room and kitchen. Lacquered cabinetry and mirrored backsplash tiles bring what the designer calls a “Hollywood glam” to the small area.

PRETTY IN PRINT

“This is one of my most commented-on Instagram posts,” Chandler says of the powder bath’s statementmaking Quadrille wallpaper. “You see this pattern in beige a lot, but I love that she went for the bold purple.” Feminine sconces with a bow detail and gold accents add to the room’s polish.

June 2021 | athomearkansas.com 57

ALL IN THE MIX

The living room, breakfast area, and kitchen create one large rectangle of living space. Patterns that are traditional in style but also pack a punch when it comes to color, such as Highland House’s “Tobacco Leaf” seen on the living room chairs, speak to the mix of classic and playful throughout the home. Overhead, a butterfly fixture by Julie Neill for Visual Comfort brings whimsy.

SUBTLE & SERENE

In the master bedroom, Chandler suggested tempering the home’s hues with a more subdued palette of pale green and cream. While the room is enveloped in one color, traditional paneling provides dimension and visual interest. A classic four-poster bed is paired with mirrored bedside tables Catherine had in her previous residence. .

FROM THE

START

A newly married couple builds a west Little Rock home as they begin the first chapter of their lives together WRITER TIFFANY ADAMS PHOTOGR APHER RE T T PEEK ST YLIST STEPH SMITH

62 At Home in Arkansas | June 2021

A

s newlyweds, Laura Beth Wortman Smith and her husband, Nate, scouted central Arkansas to find the perfect location for their first home together. “We were looking to buy but just weren’t finding anything that was a fit,” Laura Beth says. The couple talked with her father, Steve Wortman— president and owner of Little Rock’s Kaufman Lumber Co.—about the possibility of building, and he was able to help them locate a dream lot with a level yard and a natural setting in west Little Rock. “My parents have built every house they’ve lived in, so from a young age I got to see that process,” Laura Beth says of the inspiration to build. “My dad is very creative and always thinks of the small details, and we wanted to replicate that here.” For the exterior, the couple had a picture of a home they loved and took it to draftsman David Blazer at Kaufman’s downtown location. “He used that picture and our ideas for an open concept to create the plan,” Laura Beth says. The twostory home has four bedrooms with a master suite and

guest room on the ground level and two bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bath upstairs. “My style is very classic. I like things that will last; I’m not trendy or modern. I’m a big Pinterest fan, so I was able to find things I liked, even paint colors, and pull from there,” Laura Beth says, noting she would take pictures of furniture, lighting, and even accessories she liked to the designers at Kaufman By Design West and they would help to source the pieces. “They were so good about helping to match things I saw in inspiration photos and knowing just where to look for similar pieces,” she adds. The couple, who were married in 2020, moved in just two weeks before the COVID pandemic began. “I work as a school nurse, so I was essentially home for about six months,” she says. “It gave me time to do my research and really think about how I wanted to decorate the interiors and the details I wanted to add once we were here,” she says. “I love to decorate, so this was a fun project for me.”

RELAXATION CENTRAL

The home’s open floor plan allows Laura Beth and Nate to entertain with ease whether they are hosting a formal dinner party or watching football with friends. A large sectional in the living room is visible and within earshot of the dining room and kitchen, meaning guests can see and converse with one another from each of the rooms. “Since this is an open plan, I had to make sure everything flowed from one room to the next,” Laura Beth says. Light brass finishes and a neutral palette tie the living room to the adjoining spaces.

June 2021 | athomearkansas.com 63

Furniture and lighting from Kaufman By Design West are complemented by glassware Laura Beth’s mother, Missy, had received when she married and then passed on to her daughter as a wedding gift.

PRACTICAL & PRISTINE

“I cook a lot, and I didn’t want the kitchen’s décor to get in the way when I’m preparing a meal,” Laura Beth says. To this end, detailed embellishments were incorporated on the cabinetry door fronts, backsplash tile, hardware, and lighting. The result is a fully functional room with visual depth and interest that doesn’t interfere with workspaces.

LAYERED COMFORT

The master suite is located just off the kitchen. Here, Laura Beth went for what she calls a more “soft and romantic” feel with luxurious bedding and a mix of linen and velvet textiles. On either side of the custom upholstered bed, classic gourd lamps and Louis Philippe mirrors pair with contemporary chests that feature textured drawer fronts.

SPA-WORTHY SPACE

“I love taking baths, so I wanted to create a very relaxing space in the master bath and then bring in some fun through the light fixture,” Laura Beth says. The vanity area echoes this approach with modern, organicshaped sconces, marble countertops, and acrylic hardware. The couple are drawn to gold finishes and carried them throughout this bath and much of the home for continuity.

ook around the home of Catherine and Dr. John Sims in North Little Rock and you’ll notice nods to nature everywhere. The biggest, of course, is the view outside of the Arkansas River. In fact, seeing this lot in the city’s Rockwater community was one of the couple’s biggest motivators to build rather than buy when relocating from Manhattan back to their home state. “We were moving from the city, and a home in the suburbs just didn’t feel right,” Catherine says. With its proximity to Argenta and downtown Little Rock as well as trails and a view of the river, this location hit the perfect balance of city living and natural appeal. When she started finding inspiration photos that reflected her and John’s “organic modern” style, Catherine realized how much their time in Bali had influenced their look. “We love to travel internationally, and we typically end up in Asia,” she says. “Before moving back to Arkansas we spent a month in Indonesia. The style in Bali is very neutral with cool tones and warm woods. There’s tons of windows and everything is very sparse, very natural.” Recognizing the calming effect this simplified, contemporary aesthetic had on them—especially amid hectic lifestyles and now with 5-month-old daughter,

Aspen, in tow—she set out to incorporate many of those same elements into their new build. “We couldn’t have a totally open-air house like you would in Asia, but we wanted that feel,” she says. “The view outside here is changing all the time. It’s beautiful every season of the year; it’s like art.” To help her fully realize the home’s potential, Catherine worked with interior designer Meridith Ranouil of MLH Designs. “She sent some inspiration pics, and right away I was into her aesthetic,” Meridith says. The two walked through the already-framed house while discussing the possibilities and challenges of the project, and for all of Catherine’s seemingly outsidethe-box ideas, Meridith had a solution. For example, to keep the home as “undecorated” as possible, builtins for nightstands and dressers were created in the bedrooms. On the exterior, she found a veneer that would give the homeowners the board-form concrete finish they desired. And in the master bath, where Catherine suggested a wooden installation over the tub, the designer achieved the look with a backsplash tile. “She trusted me to do what she envisioned,” Meridith says. “She’s got her own sense of style and she basically knew what she wanted. I was able to take that look, put it through a filter, and make it work.”

MODERN WARMTH

A floor-to-ceiling welded fireplace is the focal point in the living room. A floating hearth fabricated from the same leathered quartzite found in the kitchen provides extra seating around the fire. The industrial nature of the steel surround and concrete floors contribute to the masculine feel of the homeowners’ style, while layered rugs and various wood finishes bring warmth and texture to the seating area.

Hidden hardware helps maintain the cabinetry’s sleek appearance: Upper cabinets open with an internal touch latch, while base cabinets and drawers use channeled hardware. A pass-through window over the sink connects the space to an outside bar.

CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC

Abundant storage and room to entertain were Catherine’s priorities in the kitchen. “I’m not a chef, and it needed to be inviting for me to actually use it,” she laughs. She also wanted to be able to seat three at the bar, which was a challenge: At its current size, the island was too small to accommodate three stools, and if enlarged, it would encroach on accessibility of the nearby fridge. To remedy this, Meridith designed a walnut bridge, which extends out to one side to offer the desired seating space while maintaining traffic flow and adding visual interest. “That was an example of a problem that created an opportunity,” Meridith says.

WELL-CRAFTED SPACE

Catherine and John got interested in the craft cocktail scene while living in Manhattan. Here, Meridith helped design a bar upstairs where they could recreate the experience at home. Black matte and walnut-veneer cabinetry mimic the kitchen downstairs, and open shelving gives John a place to display different whiskeys and tequilas. A painting by Nashville artist Ashley Treece draws from the green chairs in the adjoining lounge.

ROOM WITH THE VIEW

While initial drawings had more square footage on the second floor designated for the master suite, the homeowners decided they’d rather use that space for a lounge area near the bar. “The view is beautiful anywhere in the house, but it’s the best from the upstairs porch,” Catherine says. “Plus, we didn’t want to be limited to socializing just downstairs.” A pair of midcentury-inspired arm chairs upholstered in olive green and a burl wood side table speak to the couple’s love of nature. Sliding iron doors leading to John’s office provide separation between the spaces without interrupting the view.

KEY TO COMFORT

In keeping with the couple’s less-is-more approach to furnishings, Meridith incorporated interesting, functional elements during the building phase. “She wanted it to be very, very minimal,” Meridith says. “After looking at a couple of inspiration shots, I drew up this design for an accent wall. The top is an unfinished wood to look natural and clean. Below, we painted the molding and added wallmounted nightstands so everything is clutter free.” An upholstered bed and layered textures in the rug and pillows add warmth.

ASIAN INSPIRATION

“The whole bathroom was a nod to Asia and the spas we love there,” Catherine says. “They all had wooden fixtures and cool tones, and I wanted our bathroom to feel reminiscent of that.” Individual wands of the sleek sconces flanking the mirror can be spun for more or less lighting, and heated floors and a trough-style sink contribute to the spa-like feel.

ROOM TO RELAX

After living in a 600-square-foot apartment in New York, a roomy bathtub was high on Catherine’s list for their new build. The soaking tub calls to mind the concrete on the main floor while contributing to the overall masculine aesthetic. In a niche created to house the deckmount faucet, Meridith used a backsplash tile that doubles as an art installation. “She wanted to bring in some wood, and I wanted something with a bit of movement,” Meridith says. “This tile was perfect because it checked several boxes— we’ve got the wood, the warmth, and the art.”

DREAM CLOSET

The Simses also previously lived in Minnesota, which is where Catherine started blogging as a creative outlet. In addition to sharing restaurant recs and women-owned businesses, she posts about her style and beauty routine, so it was only fitting she have a closet suited for the spotlight. The custom design includes hat and shoe displays, accessory drawers, and hanging racks for all seasons of clothing. The pièce de résistance? A wine fridge installed at the back of the island with champagne at the ready for a girls nights in.

PATTERNS WE LOVE

Crewel Intentions Dimension, texture, and an abundance of color are just a few of the qualities you’ll find in crewel fabric. Defined as intricate stitch work completed exclusively in wool yarn, crewel work has a slightly bulkier, richer appearance than its counterpart embroidery, which uses thread. Traditionally crafted on a linen background, scenes of nature, such as vines and flowers, are often depicted. In its earliest manifestation, crewel work appeared frequently on decorative tapestries, the most famous of which is the Bayeux Tapestry. Spanning an impressive 230 feet, this tapestry was completed in the 11th century to portray the Norman Conquest. Today, the delightful technique makes excellent fabric for tablecloths, chair backs, and drapes.
