calming waters Last weekend my husband and I went to my family’s lake house for the first time this season, just us two. This was partly due to COVID-19 concerns, but also simply because the family as a whole is outgrowing the place. My parents bought the 1960s ranch style house on Lake Hamilton when I was in high school and we were a family of four. Nowadays, my sister and I both have Photograph by Rett Peek a spouse in tow and she has three little ones who are quickly turning into not-so-little ones; beds are getting hard to come by. Without the chatter and laughter of the whole family, I expected the house to feel empty. But the truth is, after such a strange and high-stress spring, the quietness was welcome. We spent hours in the rockers on the screened-in porch, first with morning coffee, then with a book while taking a break from the sun, then with a happy hour cocktail in hand, all while watching the sun make its arc over the day. For the first time in weeks, I felt calm. In our Summer Living issue, we often feature the places folks refer to as their “retreats,” and this July edition is no different. However, in no year has that turn of phrase felt more accurate. Whether your retreat is a trail on Pinnacle Mountain, an evening at the grill in your backyard, or taking the time to watch the kids run through the sprinkler, I hope you get a chance to rest and recharge this season.

What’s New? THE NURSERIE LITTLE ROCK

12 At Home in Arkansas | July 2020

While Little Rock’s Horticare Landscape Co. has continued to operate landscaping services, the nursery and storefront on Stagecoach Road has recently come under new ownership and been rebranded as The Nurserie. At the helm of this new endeavor is Rob Galloway, who also owns WaterVeg, an aquaponics and subscription food-delivery company. “Hydroponics is growing plants in a soilless medium, and aquaponics combines fish with that system,” Rob explains. In this type of farming, fish fertilize the water that the plants grow in, creating a small eco-system with little to no waste. Until now, WaterVeg has offered delivery of live lettuce plants, most of which were cultivated in greenhouses leased at Horticare. When Rob had the opportunity to purchase Horticare’s nursery and grow his passion project, he seized it. “I started doing this in my backyard 12-15 years ago, but I’ve always known I wanted to

make it a business,” he says. With help from the previous owners, The Nurserie opened in February without any disruption in operations. “Their business is still going strong on the landscaping side, and they’ve been really helpful before and during the transition,” Rob says. While WaterVeg is still operating as its own entity, The Nurserie expands on the idea of a typical nursery as a working farm and market. “In addition to having flowers, shrubs, and trees on the nursery side, we grow tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, and of course have all the tilapia tanks,” Rob says. “We’ll also be sourcing local produce, fruits, dairy, and meats from state-certified vendors,” he adds, noting that he’s still looking for more local farmers to join the market. In the future, he hopes to add more greenhouses, tropical plants, and offer classes for beginners interested in hydroponics and aquaponics. Call (501) 438-0808 or visit thenurserie.com for more information.

THE GOOD EARTH GARDEN CENTER

5 Ways to Add Curb Appeal

BEFORE

AFTER

1. Clean up. It sounds simple, but

this step often gets overlooked. For starters, rein in out-of-control plants, remove or replace unhappy plants, weed, put down fresh mulch, and fertilize your lawn and bed areas. Don’t skip washing down and touching up porches and outdoor furnishings to make your space shine.

2. Make adjustments. Take a Why is curb appeal important? Attractive landscape increases a home’s curb appeal and more importantly, it can increase both the perceived and actual value of a home.

closer look at design elements to see where small changes can be made. Maybe your landscape beds need to be expanded to accommodate larger plants, or, perhaps, your edging could be upgraded to stone. Evaluate if you have too many or not enough plants in an area.

3. Bring in color. Consider

adding seasonal and perennial

color in your beds to provide contrast and visual interest. Place color in areas where you want to draw the eye, such as near the entry, in areas leading up to the front door, or along walkways.

4. Light the way. Quality landscape lighting is welcoming, interesting, adds security, and is a transferrable upgrade to your home value as well. 5. Work with an expert. You might be looking for advice on a do-it-yourself upgrade or be considering hiring a landscape team for a large-scale renovation. Either way, you’ll want to partner with a knowledgeable, reliable company that takes pride in connecting homeowners with their outdoor space to address function as well as aesthetics.

1966, the Little Rock home April and David Messersmith share with their

three children was remodeled

13 However, both their style and needs have evolved over the past decade, prompting them to call local designer Krista Lewis to update several spaces in the home, including the kitchen. “Krista and I were sorority sisters at the University of Arkansas, so it was a lot of fun to get to work with a friend on this project,” April says. The two shared a common goal of renovating the room while keeping the style in line with the home’s midcentury architecture. The footprint of the kitchen didn’t change in the when the family moved in

makeover. However, several tweaks to the existing cabinetry, which also received new front panels, helped make it more user friendly: A set of cabinets were removed to allow for a larger four-door refrigerator; a desk was replaced with cabinetry and new countertops to create a buffet; cabinetry was extended to the ceiling to create storage for less frequently used items; and several base cabinets were swapped for drawers to create easy access to heavy pots and pans. In terms of the palette, light and bright was the goal. Krista chose white walls and warm gray accents to play off of the hardwood flooring, which was one of the only carryovers from the previous design. These neutrals are accented with a vivid green, seen most prominently on the breakfast table chairs. “One pop of color keeps this room very clean and streamlined,” Krista says.

“Even before COVID-19, we ate most meals at home, so we wanted a big table to accommodate the five of us,” April says. Indoor/outdoor velvet covers the seats making for easy cleanup.

Scrolling through the mouth-watering images on Savya Kuncham Ramesh’s Instagram feed (@wickedlywhisked), you’d never guess she’s not a baker by trade. As an industrial engineer, Savya hadn’t even tried her hand at cooking until it was entirely necessary. “I lived in India until I was 22, and I had never entered the kitchen—like, never,” she laughs. “I decided to do my masters in the United States, and before I moved, my mom was so worried because she knew I loved to eat, but didn’t know how to cook!” After studying in Houston and working in South Carolina for several years, Savya and her family—husband Madhuresh and 4-year-old son Ruhaan—relocated to Fayetteville. It was around this time that she started experimenting more in the kitchen, both with her ingredients and her camera. Along with 15 other food and photo enthusiasts around the world, she started @foodcapturecollective, where together they explore a new technique in food photography via Instagram each month. “We pick something that’s challenging, like splash photography or using hard light,” she says. “Anyone who wants to participate can join and use the month’s hashtag, and we help guide each other in that technique.” For this issue, we asked Savya to make us something sweet with in-season berries. Her choice? A summer galette. “Galettes are basically a lazy person’s pie,” she says. “They’re so easy; you don’t need any special tools or to be a pro baker. And they taste absolutely delicious with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Once you get the base right, you can fill it with whatever you want.”

RECIPE

Summer Berry Galette Yields 4 individual-sized galettes

SHOP

In addition to the ingredients listed below, have on hand extra flour for dusting and parchment paper. PASTRY

1¹⁄ 3 cups all-purpose flour ¹⁄ 8 teaspoon baking powder pinch of salt 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed 3 ounces cream cheese 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 2 teaspoons rice vinegar FILLING BASE

4 ladyfingers, crushed 3 tablespoons granulated sugar ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon FRUIT FILLING

1½ cups fresh strawberries and blueberries (cut strawberries into bite-size pieces) ½ cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional) pinch of salt GLAZE

1 egg 1 ½ teaspoons water 1 tablespoon sugar crushed almonds, for garnish

PREPARE

PRO TIP

Before you begin, combine flour, salt, and baking powder in an air-tight container and store in the freezer for an hour. Place cubed butter in the freezer for about 30 minutes. This step helps ensure the ingredients are still cold when you put them in the oven. “When you’re mixing with your hands, you’re bound to generate heat; so starting with ingredients that are extra cold helps offset that heat and ensure a flaky crust," Savya says.

To make the pastry, use your hands to roughly combine freezer-cold flour mixture (see Pro Tip at left) and cream cheese in a medium bowl. Add the butter, still mixing with your hands, until crumbs form. Add heavy whipping cream and vinegar to form dough, adding more cream if the mixture seems dry. Flatten the dough with your fingers to form a disk. Cover the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 45 minutes; take out of the refrigerator at least 10 minutes before rolling out. While dough is chilling, combine all ingredients of the filling base and set aside. Do the same with the fruit filling, gently toss, and set aside. Preheat the oven to 400ºF. To assemble the galettes, divide the dough into four equal pieces and roll out on a small piece of lightly floured parchment paper. Place dough and parchment paper onto a baking sheet. Cover the center of each pastry with filling base, leaving about an inch of dough around the border, then spoon fruit filling over the base. Carefully fold the edge of the dough over the filling, pleating the pastry with your fingers while leaving the fruit-filled center exposed. To create the glaze, beat the egg and water, then brush on the edges of the pastry. Sprinkle sugar over the entire galette. Bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until the edges of the pastry are golden. Allow to cool on a wire rack. Garnish with chopped almonds and serve with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. >> Follow @wickedlywhisked to keep up with Savya’s journey in the kitchen, and check out @foodcapturecollective to find out how to join the monthly technique challenge.

Clematis and peonies are two colorful favorites found in the garden.

ROOM TO RELAX

After years of living in a neighborhood near the city’s center and renting a garden plot at Little Rock’s Two Rivers Park, Leslie and Dr. C.D. Williams were thrilled to find a “for sale” sign on 40 acres in west Little Rock. With two houses, a pond, and an abundance of land, they knew their days of hauling shovels and seed to their small community beds were over. “This place really took my breath away when I first saw it,” Leslie recalls. However, at that time, the grounds were not finished; there was only limited landscape around the main house and guesthouse as well as the pond. “I had great visions for this place, and they grew,” Leslie says. After needed updates, such as paving the road and adding pin oak trees for shade in the backyard, the Williamses installed a raised bed garden. “I spent all my days—probably 40 hours a week—working in the yard,” Leslie says of her drive to bring the vision to life.

The back of the home has a dual-level terrace with views of the stocked pond. Outdoor furnishings from Ken Rash’s Arkansas, including a firepit, make it the perfect spot to sip coffee and watch the fog roll on the water in the mornings.

LAYERED DESIGN

A breezeway between the garage and main house also offers access to both the front and back yards. Since the covered area receives no sunlight, the potted spiral fir trees are artificial. The magnolia tree, seen at left, is an espalier that adds contrasting texture to the stone wall. Coral drift roses, red geraniums, ‘New Guinea Magnum White Blush’ impatiens, and a coral hibiscus add color in the foreground, while sweet olive trees are a constant evergreen.

ON THE CLIMB

‘New Dawn’ roses (left) span a portion of the covered porch where French doors lead from the living room to the terrace beyond. The concrete statues are part of Leslie’s collection. Below, a mix of clematis and ‘Joseph’s Coat’ roses ascend a trellis in a large perennial flower bed.

Over the past 15 years, one project has led to another and numerous additions have been made to the rolling landscape. For example, almost a decade ago the couple added a large perennial bed, which Leslie says was originally for cut flowers but has taken on a more stately look with the planting of knockout roses. They also worked with landscaper Joel Villa to dig out a marshy creek, which gave them reason to build a bridge over its flowing water as well as waterfalls that feed from the creek. They enjoyed that process so much they decided to make a coop for their chickens with his help. The Williamses also installed an Earth Shelter greenhouse placed down into a dugout portion of the ground. This offers them a place to plot their next project and pot their next seed year-round.

Geese, ducks, turtles, and deer can often be seen at different vantage points on the property.

NATURAL ADDITIONS

A waterfall, one of two on the property, is fed from the nearby creek. A weeping cherry tree, wisteria, knockout roses, and small beds filled with lantana highlight its beauty. To provide a clear path from the house to the garden and chicken coop, the Williamses constructed this bridge. Outfitted with roll-down shades, lighting, and comfortable seating, this is also a nice place to enjoy a glass of wine on spring evenings.

MOUNTAIN RETREAT

A vacation home in Jasper offers endless opportunities for family fun

“We wanted to design it very much in keeping with the original house.” —Daniel Keeley

Amid the rolling hills and treetops of the Ozarks is one family’s treasured retreat. With a wraparound porch, courtyard dining, rows of rocking chairs, and even a tennis court, it’s a dream home for a family who loves to spend time together outdoors. And while classic architecture makes the house feel as if it’s been a part of the landscape for decades, this picture is only partially true. “When the owners first bought this land, there was a roughly 100-year-old farmhouse in this exact location,” says Daniel Keeley, who designed the landscape and outdoor living spaces both here and at a compound on another part of the property. (Its two cozy cabins and their outdoor living areas were previously featured in At Home). With plenty of sleeping quarters at the aforementioned area, this house was intended more as an “entertainment hub.” “They didn’t necessarily

Natural stone steps, a white gate, and lush liriope and catmint lend a cottage feel to the home’s entrance, while white clapboard siding and weeping mortar in the structure’s brick foundation give the home a lowcountry appeal. An antique iron bell installed on a post by the entrance is a relic of the home’s past, one of the few items found on-site before construction of the new house began.

AL FRESCO

A large dining table in the courtyard offers space for a crowd to share a meal, often from the nearby pizza oven (seen on page 44). “We wanted to bring that casual, Southern feel throughout the design,” Daniel says, pointing to the classic shape of the skirted-style wicker chairs paired with a more modern concrete-top table. “The captain’s chairs’ historic Windsor design is English-turned-early-American, and that’s chronologically fitting for the style of the house,” he adds.

46 At Home in Arkansas | July 2020

need more bedrooms, but having another gathering place like this where they can all be together is really important to them,” Daniel says. “And once they discovered the original farmhouse was beyond repair, they figured they might as well make it everything they wanted it to be.” When the decision was made to build new, the family brought on architect Jeff Laur, contractor Tim Emerson, and Daniel, who had also become a friend over years of working together on various projects. “We wanted to design it very much in keeping with the original house,” Daniel says. “It’s Southern, casual, and rural, but dressed up a little bit.”

INDOOR-OUTDOOR DESIGN

Daniel turned to the home’s interiors for inspiration in the outdoor furnishings. “We always try to bring the outdoors in and vice versa, so I asked what colors they were going to use inside the house before we began,” he says. In this way, he pulled shades of navy and denim throughout all the outdoor areas, including a screened porch off the house’s only bedroom (above) and in upholstered rockers along the veranda (left). A lighter version of the hue coats the ceiling of the wraparound porch, and classic Bevolo copper lanterns fit right in with the home’s Southern style.

A firepit behind the house creates another destination for gathering, particularly when the temperatures drop at nightfall. Lights over the tennis court in the background mean players can hit the court after sundown.

One of the vacation home’s most unique features is its tennis court, complete with a pavilion for spectators to keep an eye on the fun in a cool, comfortable environment. Although this destination is a short walk from the house, similar design materials and furnishings make it feel cohesive in the overall design. A beverage fridge on one end offers easy access to refreshments on hot summer days.

CLEAN CUISINE

The layout and many of the features in the kitchen follow the design of Holly’s primary residence in Texas. The table was a find from Serena & Lily, while the artwork seen near the refrigerator is part of a collage series Joshua created earlier this year. Open shelving filled with cream and white pottery as well as clear glass gives an unobtrusive dose of style.

Island living is not a term frequently referenced by Arkansans. However, Holly and Danny Berry are doing just that on a small piece of property in Hot Springs Village. While the couple, who married in 2012, share a full-time residence in east Texas, Holly has had a vacation home in the Village for the past 13 years and, thus, was familiar with its incomparable beauty. When a real estate agent showed them this island property, they were intrigued. Plans began to take shape to build a weekend getaway with a sweeping view of Lake Balboa where they could relax together and entertain friends and family. “We like the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, especially the fact that in his designs, nothing is uniform; the ceilings alternate in lower and higher heights,” Holly says. Danny, who is a commercial builder, brought in an architecture firm he works with frequently to help draw up the plans. From there, brothers Matthew and Nicholas Sarver of Hot Springs’s Sarver Construction took the reins. “We were so thrilled to have Matthew working on this project,” Holly says of the builder who passed away in early 2020. “One of his many talents was good vision; and he certainly had that for our home,” Holly says.

July 2020 | athomearkansas.com 51

DINING IN DETAIL

“This room has a beautiful diffused atmosphere,” Joshua says of the dining room, which connects to both outdoor areas as well as the kitchen. A textured grasscloth wallcovering in a graphite motif lends a dressier feel to the room while the Italian walnut dining table and chairs complement the midcentury elements found throughout the home. Joshua added lighting and accessories with rich black accents to give the design an edge. Eight-foot ceilings give the dining room a more intimate feel.

The building process was nearing the finishing line when Holly visited Joshua Plumlee’s design store, Ransom Interiors, in Little Rock one day. “Walking into Ransom, I fell in love with the shop and with Joshua,” Holly recalls. While she had already selected some of the furnishings for the home, even going to market to make purchases, the home needed art, accessories, and other pieces to make it complete. “I have used a designer in all my homes, so I knew how instrumental he would be in helping me pull it all together.” “She has immaculate taste; she loves clean, organic materials mixed with a little bit of edge and lots of

52 At Home in Arkansas | July 2020

texture,” Joshua says. He notes the architectural style carries over into the interiors through the mix of natural and sleek, streamlined furnishings as well as the addition of abstract art pieces. “I think they just have so much fun in this house,” Joshua says, referencing the numerous conversation and dining areas both indoors and out. “I’ve lived in six or seven homes now and they have been everything from rustic to French provincial,” Holly says. “I like taking on a different look in each one, but this is my first transitional home. I think the older you get, the less you want to clean and keep up, so this style works perfectly.”

“We like the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, especially the fact that in his designs, nothing is uniform; the ceilings alternate in lower and higher heights.” —Holly Berry, homeowner

VANTAGE POINT

As both an artist and interior designer, Joshua says he oftentimes wore two hats when considering the design of the living room. A piece of art was needed for the space between the French doors and windows; however, it needed to be something that didn’t detract from the view. A mixed media on paper work entitled “Graffiti Corner,” which Joshua created for a room he designed at the 2018 Symphony Designer House, was the perfect addition. In terms of furnishings, he complemented the sofas and buffet Holly already owned with new swivel chairs, brass floor lamps, and a textured coffee table. The threedimensional piece seen over the buffet was crafted from coconut fibers by artist Jeremiah Palecek.

July 2020 | athomearkansas.com 53

TRANQUIL SETTING

The home features split baths off the master. In Holly’s, a soaking tub offers a spot to relax with a glass of wine at the end of the day. Neutral hues direct the eye to the view outside the window, while a Roman shade offers privacy.

Underfoot, porcelain tile gives the look of bleached wood with a durability that can stand up to lake life.

54 At Home in Arkansas | July 2020

Joshua created a nook where Holly can enjoy morning coffee by outfitting a corner area with a comfortable chair, side table, and a floor lamp.

SUITE SUNRISE

Full-length windows and doors allows the Berrys to take in nature from the comfort of the master bedroom, while neutral streamlined furnishings that are characteristic of the rest of the home don’t draw the eye too heavily in one direction. July 2020 | athomearkansas.com 55

BUNK ROOM

Collectively, Holly and Danny have more than a dozen grandchildren—all of whom love to frequent the bunk room. The space features four built-in, queen-sized beds on one wall and two twins beds on the opposite side. “I love that these are almost like a little caboose car, tucked away with the curtain,” Holly says. She purchased the rug before knowing exactly where it would be used. To make it fit the space, Joshua had it cut and rebound to provide warmth to little toes in the morning.

56 At Home in Arkansas | July 2020

CALMING RETREAT

In a fashion similar to the master suite, the guest room is meant to be a private escape after a day on the lake or playing golf. The en suite features a lighter take on the home’s neutral palette along with luxurious bedding and a soft antique rug.

July 2020 | athomearkansas.com 57

“I think they just have so much fun in this house.” —Joshua Plumlee, designer

ROOM FOR A CROWD

“We really enjoy the Village and entertain here a lot,” Holly says. An outdoor area accessible from the dining room, living room, and master bedroom provides the perfect spot to sip a pre-dinner cocktail and take in a view of the lake. Sleek low-back sofas and a neutral color scheme adhere to the home’s overall design, while a stacked stone fireplace provides warmth on chilly nights.

Generously sized chairs with knotted rope sides create a cozy conversation area on the covered porch and speak to the incorporation of texture throughout the furnishings.

their vision.

“We wanted our kids to grow up being lake babies,” Lyndsey says of the couple’s son, Jonah, and daughter, Eva. “Josh spent a lot of time playing sports in the summer when he was growing up and never really had much time for things like going to the lake; so we knew this was something we wanted for our kids,” she adds. The couple had been looking for a lake house for both personal use and as a long-term investment for a few years when they found this property on Lake Hamilton. “This came on the market, and literally four minutes later Josh called to see if I wanted to look at it the next day,” Lyndsey recalls. Upon touring the property—which includes a main house and two smaller cedar cottages that can accommodate up to 18 collectively—the Sullivans fell in love. “Josh is one of 10 kids and my parents frequently visit us from Florida, so we could just picture having everyone together with plenty of room here,” Lyndsey says. They also felt the layout of the cabins, which they have now dubbed “The Cedars” due to their exteriors, would be attractive to groups looking to rent a space for their extended family or friends.

July 2020 | athomearkansas.com 61

COOKING IN COLOR

The Sullivans didn’t shy away from color in the kitchen, opting to paint existing cabinetry a deep blackish-blue hue. Vintage brass pendants were among Lyndsey’s first purchases for the renovation; according to their previous owner, they once hung in Hot Springs’s historic Arlington Hotel. Rather than traditional trim, they opted for a less expected route by finishing out the beam with wood slats, which provide visual interest while adhering to the overall design scheme.

See the “before” pictures and read more about the renovation process on our blog, athomearkansas.com/blog.

“We could just picture having everyone together with plenty of room here.” —Lyndsey Sullivan

In order to bring their vision to life fully, the cabins needed to be updated. In the main house (featured here), walls came down to the studs and the roofline was raised and reoriented, both to allow more light in and for guests to take in more of the view. Inside, Lyndsey and Josh say their number one goal was to “take as many risks as possible” when it came to paint colors and décor, noting they’ve always stuck to more traditional colors and pieces when renovating their primary residence. “There were a lot of things I had pinned for my own home and then ended up not doing; I wanted to use all those ideas here,” Lyndsey says. “For eight months, we spent every weekend here poring over the details. I’m definitely not a designer, but I wanted to get this right.”

GATHER ’ROUND

“I really pictured this space as the spot where our families would come together for meals,” Lyndsey says of the dining room and adjacent island, which can seat five. Part of the couple’s vision for the property was to have the main house serve as the gathering space while the two smaller cabins would provide individual retreats for sleeping and down time. A neutral palette keeps with the tone of the house and directs the eye outward to the view.

BRING YOUR OWN BOOK

Since the living room was formerly a bedroom, a closet remained following the renovation. “I probably stared at this for five hours collectively before deciding what to do here,” Lyndsey says. The space is now a reading nook thanks a built-in seat and a covered cushion from Cynthia East Fabrics.

A NEW OUTLOOK

Walls came down to transform what was once the master bedroom into the living room. Built-in bookshelves hold collected items, many of which Lyndsey found at local shops, estate sales, and thrift stores during the renovation, while a media console conceals unsightly receivers and stores the family’s favorite board games. Shiplap covers the walls and pitched roof. “This was one of those things I almost didn’t do because I wasn’t sure if we would still like shiplap in five years. It would’ve been the safe thing to not do it but I ended up going for it, and I love how it turned out,” Lyndsey says.

READY FOR REST

This master bedroom (another master suite is located downstairs) had previously been a second living area with the headboard now sitting against what was a fireplace. The Sullivans kept the paneling, painting it a blue-green color, and repurposed the mantel as an art ledge. The ceiling, which had yellowed over time, was given new life with a coat of white paint. Wicker pendants over the nightstands bring texture to the room and complete the look.

COLLECTIONS

tiny treasures Limoges boxes are a curiosity whose intrigue has transcended time. Taking their name from the city where they (and numerous other fine porcelain pieces) were created, they were originally used by French aristocrats to carry snuff. In the latter half of the 20th century, Limoges boxes—which come in whimsical shapes such as an artist’s palette, a teacup, or a lighthouse (as shown above)—made a return when it became en vogue to use the pieces as pillboxes. The trend continues today with boxes being crafted by an array of French companies as well as vendors around the globe. Want to tell if your box is authentic to the area? Check the bottom for a stamp that reads Limoges France. Special thanks to Fabulous Finds Antique & Decorative Mall for use of these pieces for this feature.
