authentic approach I walked through Jeremy Carter’s house with him several times in preparation for the story featured on this month’s cover. Each time, there was some piece of art or curio I hadn’t noticed before, and for each one I pointed out, he had a story to tell: There was a small painting he had picked up in Hawaii that Photography by Rett Peek looked perfect tucked in a hallway; a funky birdshaped box passed along from a friend; a sculpture formed out of tornado debris and gifted to him. He didn’t pick out these objects because they fit a certain look or theme, but they are things he’s grown to love. We show many homes designed by professionals in At Home in Arkansas. Those stories can leave you wondering, What do these designers want to see in their own homes? Do they follow certain rules they pass along to their clients? What’s it like being your own client, anyway? In this issue, we’re sharing inspiration from the homes of three designers to answer those questions! You’ll see Jill Lawrence’s master suite remodel and the full tour of both Mona Thompson and Jeremy’s homes. One of my favorite takeaways of their advice was something Mona said: “I don’t think authenticity ever goes out of style. If something is authentic and it means something to you, then it’s going to work anywhere.” Looking for design inspiration from the pros? Decorate your home with things you love, and you can’t go wrong.

Callie Bullock, owner of soft furnishings studio Draped & Tailored, has opened her first workroom since starting her business a year and a half ago. The 1,300-square-foot studio in midtown Little Rock has a small showroom where clients and designers can see examples in person, feel textile samples, and “discuss all of the custom possibilities,” Callie says. This new step also means she has additional space to fabricate draperies, shades, pillows, bedding, and more. “I’m now able to table panels over 20 feet long, and I’m already working at an increased level of efficiency.” In addition, Callie plans to host a series of training workshops where she can educate designers about different pleat styles, pillow and cushion inserts, and lining options, among other relevant topics. The Gift of Design Marie Jeffery helps a Rogers homeowner renovate her kitchen from floor to ceiling

Vivian Dunnaway’s children Marie Jeffery,

called their friend

they were looking for the perfect gift.

“They said their mom was renovating her home, and I was going to be her Christmas present,” the designer recalls. Marie, who started her design business five years ago after spending 17 years teaching elementary school, was eager to help. “The same nurture aspect that I loved about teaching has carried over into my passion for design,” she says. The two women talked extensively about plans in preparation for the room’s complete overhaul. The former kitchen was closed off with a floor plan and cabinetry that limited conversation between the cook space and the dining area. Marie also recalls a yellow-and-white plaid wallpaper, worn linoleum floor, and dated countertops, all of which she says were done well at the time they were installed but in need of an update. Marie and Vivian not only discussed function and aesthetics but also the overall feel of the space. “She wanted her friends to feel comfortable here—like they could sit down and stay forever,” Marie says, noting Vivian’s personal style is a blend of traditional and eclectic that lends itself to this. INSET IN STYLE

Vivian liked the look of glazed pottery, so Marie found light and airy tiles (Glazzio’s “Octave Breeze”) that feature a similar treatment to use on the backsplash behind the range.

2

CURRENT & CLEAN

The champagne finish on the hardware is a tone repeated throughout the home, while the pulls’ clean-lined simplicity is echoed on the cabinetry and the pendant lanterns.

3

FRESH FIXTURE

A single-level pull-down faucet that also features touch technology is easy to use even when the cook’s hands are full. The finish coordinates with the hardware as well as the light dusting of champagne on the appliances.

4

PERFECT PAIRING

Cambria’s “Swanbridge” quartz countertop is a lightcolored, durable option that coordinates well with the textured subway tile.

A huge island, opened doorways, a pantry, and a current yet timeless palette of white and blue were all boxes on the wish list. “Blue is a favorite color for her. At first, we only had the island in blue (a shade custom to the cabinetry company), but then she decided to go a little bit further and do all of the base cabinetry, too,” Marie says. Lighter shades of the color are found in the three applications of backsplash tile, including a herringbone pattern

behind the range, a tri-color penny tile on the bar and around the sink window, and a classic subway that bridges the two. The end result also features numerous contemporary touches—from the linear lanterns to the gold and champagne seen on the finishes—while still keeping Vivian’s style at the forefront. “She really stepped out of her comfort zone in this renovation and found new looks she loves,” Marie says.

COTTAGE GARDEN

Hillside Hideaway Multiple spots for reflection and year-round color are highlights of this Little Rock landscape

WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK

October 2019 | athomearkansas.com 27

After 34 years in her previous home in Little Rock, Libby Bunch had been itching to move back to her childhood neighborhood.

“My husband, Lewis, and I come to the Hillcrest Farmers Market down the street every Saturday, and I grew up in this area,” she says. So when they got their chance to build on a lot across from dear friends, they jumped at it. Libby called on architect Wayne Hardy to design the house and contractor Bill Parkinson to bring their vision to life. “My main goal was that I wanted a house that looked like the neighborhood,” Libby says. In the backyard, the homeowners set their sights on turning a steep hill overlooking nearby Allsopp Park into a soothing, comfortable, and private garden retreat. To transform the once rugged terrain, Zak Grothe with The Good Earth Garden Center and his team imported tons of native stone and boulders to build retaining walls and

A copper rain chain mimics the look of acorns.

carve pathways into the hill. Then they planted a variety of perennials, flowering plants, and evergreens, and were even able to incorporate ferns and hostas Libby transplanted from her previous garden. “No matter the time of year, there’s always something blooming out here. That’s what I like best about it,” Libby says.

28 At Home in Arkansas | October 2019

GARDEN STYLE

Elements of Libby’s personal style have been incorporated into her home’s exterior as well as the landscaping. For example, a concrete fountain from her previous home is centered in an herb garden behind the house, and a copper acorn rain chain, rather than a traditional gutter, channels runoff from one side of the roof. Elsewhere, copper gutters coordinate with the rain chain and copper seen on the lanterns and chimney caps.

FRONT DOOR DESIGN

Arched doorways, a mixture of stone and painted brick, and a catslide roofline are hallmarks of the English cottage feel that Libby desired for her home. Baby gem boxwoods, dwarf mondo grass, and lily turf line the walkways while seasonal color adds interest in containers framing the front door.

This room serves as the Bunches’ potting shed.

TIME WELL SPENT

Aluminum-clad windows painted Sherwin-Williams’ “Underseas” stand out against the exterior’s painted brick while playing off the lush greenery outside. An enclosed space under the upstairs sunroom serves as a potting shed. “It works great because it has windows on all three sides, so we can bring some of our plants in there in the winter,” Libby says. On the upper level covered porch, several sitting areas and an outdoor fireplace (pictured at right) are favorite spots for Libby and Lewis. “We’ll sit out there till dark and listen to the insect symphony,” she says.

THE DESIGNERS’ HOMES ISSUE

MASTER MAKEOVER

Suite Dreams Jill Lawrence updates her home’s master bedroom and bath with new configurations, neutral hues, and an abundance of texture

“I wanted it to feel very cocoon-like but also airy—that’s where the curtain wall behind the bed came into play. It dampens sound and makes it feel like a nest,” Jill says.

ixteen years ago, designer Jill

Lawrence and her Frank, moved into a charming family home in the heart of Little Rock. And, as Jill puts it, life happened. “When we first moved in we did some remodeling downstairs and painted everything, and then, you know, kids and life and everything happens and you realize you’ve been in the house for 15 years. The master bedroom needed to be redone when we moved in,” she laughs. “It’s also a good checkpoint as a designer to do your own project because you realize the stress your clients are going through— having people in your house, having everything picked out and ready to go, and the unforeseen expenses,” she adds. Overall, both the bedroom and adjoining bath were in good shape but lacked the current feel the couple desired. “Thankfully the people who built this house did not embrace the trends of the 1960s, so we did not have pink tile. Even though it was starting to get worn out, it was nice and neutral,” she says of the space’s previous décor. However, having been built in 1964, the layouts of the rooms were not as practical for today. For example, the bedroom was designed to have a queen-sized bed placed between two side windows. Here, Jill kept the footprint but reoriented the room, sacrificing a window along the back wall and creating a full expanse of drapery panels to soften the space— and provide a place for a king-size bed. Similarly, the bath was previously cut into small sections, including a dressing area and sink space. To enlarge those areas, they took in part of a guest room and turned the husband,

dressing area into their closet. Dedicated vanity, shower, and tub areas along with a separate water closet now flow together in the linear space. Desiring a calm, clean retreat, Jill employed a neutral palette in both rooms. “Some people feel they have to have a lot of color to have interest. I love color, but I didn’t want it in my life daily,” she says. Instead, she opted for a range of textures. For example, only two colors—cream and camel—are found in the bedroom, but they are used in numerous applications, including velvet, cashmere, wool, hide, silk, and even matchstick blinds. In the bath, antiqued wall mirrors, bamboo-framed vanity mirrors, marble, and silk draperies have the same effect. Having recently brushed up on the Hollywood Regency style for an upcoming project, Jill reflected on its principles in relation to her home and these rooms in particular. “It’s really less about decoration and more about how people look and feel in a room... that’s how I prefer my spaces to be. I feel like every home should be a beautiful frame for the people who are in it,” she says. Design Resources CONTRACTOR Robin Swede, Swede Construction INTERIOR DESIGN Jill Lawrence, J. FALLING INTO PLACE After working with the former owners of this Little Rock home—and falling in love with its bones— designer Mona Thompson bought the residence and reimagined it as her own

The screened porch connects the dining room to the backyard, and with room for grilling, dining, and reading by the fire, it’s a favorite spot for Mona.

ess than five years ago,

Mona Thompson Talena Ray, co-owners of Little Rock’s Providence Design, were hired by a Memphis couple building a home in west Little Rock. While the sisters’ signature style appealed to the homeowners, the home itself appealed to Mona. “I have always loved this house, and I told the couple, If you ever get ready to sell, please call me first,” she says. As fate would have it, the day to sell came just a few years after the project was complete. Mona and her late husband, Don, felt it was the opportune time for them to downsize and put their own spin on the home, which features all of its living spaces as well as two bedrooms and a study on the ground floor. “This home is wonderfully laid out. It’s so conducive to entertaining and bringing the outdoors in and the indoors out,” Mona says, noting she made no changes to the floor plan. Because the square footage was smaller than their previous homes, editing was crucial. “Everything in this house is something I really, truly love,” Mona says. For example, the couple’s art collection, carefully curated over the span of three decades, fills the walls with character as well as memories. “Don and I collected for and her sister

31 years, and I see him in every bit of it,” she says. The same goes for numerous antiques, from sideboards to sconces, that fill the rooms; each is unique and special, containing a story that reminds Mona of a favorite trip to Round Top or a beloved friend. Alongside these treasured pieces, the vibe is equal parts comfortable and current—with nothing feeling too precious for use or dated in its present tense, no matter its age. The designer notes the airy, neutral wall color along with lighter accessories play to this effect. “I don’t think authenticity ever goes out of style. If something is authentic and it means something to you, then it’s going to work anywhere. What makes it more current are the fabrics, accessories, and paint colors it is paired with,” she says, noting there are 19th and 20th century pieces from France, Italy, and Belgium alongside contemporary acrylic tables and reproductions in the home. “At this point in my life, lighter and fresher is probably going to be better for me forever. I love to bring color in with pillows and accessories, but you know you can look back at the work of really good designers that’s 15, 20, or even 25 years old with light, neutral walls, and it still looks fresh and timeless,” the designer says.

Giant decorative pumpkins from Park Hill Home add seasonal flair to the backyard.

In addition to the interiors, Mona was taken with a screened back porch. The area has views of a gently sloping backyard and the greenspace beyond while connecting to the interior dining room, thus offering an uninterrupted flow for entertaining. “I love to be outside, and I can be out there and I feel like I’m anywhere,” Mona says. Stacey Stafford with Stafford Fine Gardening helped Mona create a retreat with stairs that lead to a second terraced part of the yard and incorporate her collection of planters, antique benches, and statuary pieces. “He helped create a garden that is just as beautiful from the inside of my home as from the outside, and I enjoy it every single day,” she says.

COMFORTABLE & CURATED

The walls of the designer’s previous home had a warm-toned paint color. Moving to this residence gave her the opportunity for a fresh backdrop that allows the art and furnishings—particularly those shown here in the living room—to stand out. “I loved the idea of a lighter color scheme, but I wasn’t about to start painting my entire house,” Mona laughs. “I thought, I’ll have to wait until I get a new house to do all that.” Many of the furnishings were also recovered in fresh fabrics. Underfoot, a sisal rug adds a casual air while a new upholstered sofa is a relaxing spot to unwind and watch TV at night.

A pair of chests, which flanked the fireplace in Mona’s former house, took up residency in the same place here. “We had to take the baseboards off to make them fit,” Mona says. “If they were an inch bigger they wouldn’t have worked, and I would have had to get rid of them because they didn’t fit anywhere else in the house.”

October 2019 | athomearkansas.com 53

In the pantry, Mona had a custom-finished shiplap installed as the backsplash and built a wine rack in one of the open shelves. A painting by Zac Woodiel titled “Grigio Girls” hangs over the bar sink.

A WHOLE NEW BLUE

Blue and white have long been a favorite pairing of the Providence Design team; however, this was the first time Mona used the combo in her personal home. “I committed to blue when I decided to paint the kitchen cabinets a beautiful slate color and continued on with a softer blue in the renovation of the master bath and bedroom,” Mona says. “I don’t think I will ever tire of it, but, if I do, it’s just paint.” She kept the existing quartzite countertops and hired Phinality Design (who also painted the cabinets) to create a finish for the range hood and island that gives it the look of bleached oak. A graphic marble backsplash adds to the room’s transitional feel.

54 At Home in Arkansas | October 2019

REFINED DINING

The home has only one dining space, so it was important to Mona that it be large enough to accommodate at least a dozen for holiday gatherings and special occasions. Many of the pieces in the dining room have found new life in this configuration. For example, she says the chandelier has seen several interpretations of paint and crystals that allowed it to fit into each of her homes. Similarly, the side chairs were Don’s before the couple married and “have been refinished, painted, and recovered numerous times,” Mona says. The artwork depicts Jesus as a boy in the temple with the teachers. “We’ve had it in different places at different houses but never this front and center. I think it’s found its favorite spot here.”

MASTER REIMAGINED

The biggest change indoors came in the master suite, where Mona reoriented the flow of the bedroom and made numerous updates to the bath to reflect her aesthetic. “I changed the wall the bed was positioned on because I wanted to walk into the room and see it straight on rather than looking into the side of it,” the designer says. In the bath, she kept the existing cabinetry but traded white walls for a geometric wallpaper. New sconces, a chandelier over the tub, marble flooring, and soft sheers complete the design.

The custom bed was made by Little Rock’s Iron Paws by Anthony Billingsley.

Jeremy Carter brings a thoughtful mix of new and old to the renovation of his historic downtown Little Rock residence WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK S T Y L I S T L AU R E N C E R R ATO

A pair of bronze ostrich leg lamps flanking the dining room mirror are replicas of Tiffany & Co. originals, and the chandelier is one of the only two light fixtures Jeremy did not replace.

hen designer Jeremy Carter decided to buy a house in downtown Little Rock, he first had his eye on the Villa Marre. “I have always wanted to live there, ever since I was a little boy and watched Designing Women,” he says. “It came up for sale, and I almost did it. But there are so many restrictions with it being a historic property—you can’t paint the woodwork, you can’t change out the lighting. I was like, I’m a decorator! I’m not going to live with someone else’s things,” he laughs. Luckily, it wasn’t long before Jeremy— who is also proprietor of The Shade Above Lighting Collection—came across another historic property in the Quapaw Quarter for sale. This one had seen several updates since it was built in 1905—once in 1924 and again in 1998, Jeremy says. Those updates meant that he was free to put his own spin on the design of the home, but because he loved the historic nature of it, he was mindful when mixing new with the old.

October 2019 | athomearkansas.com 59

In the formal living room, a collection of figure drawings, a turtle shell on display, and a print of Roy Lichtenstein’s “Hopeless” showcase Jeremy’s eclectic taste in art.

“When I bought it, it was technically livein ready,” Jeremy says. “I hired a painter to paint the foyer, and that was kind of the ball that started rolling. Once I started, I couldn’t stop.” He chose Benjamin Moore’s “Vapor” for the main spaces to give his antiques and original artwork space to shine, but left the original mahogany doors and trim around the mantel in the formal living room in place. He paired pop art with European furniture and contemporary finishes with traditional shapes, so even in rooms with an abundance of antiques, everything feels fresh. “Even when I decorate other people’s homes, I don’t like it to feel like you walk in and you know exactly where I got that painting or what I got at market,” he says. “I like to collect stuff as I go. On any project, I’ll maybe paint and do the upholstery, and then everything after that is organic.”

60 At Home in Arkansas | October 2019

The donkey statue, a find from former antiques store Marshall Clements, is a favorite piece of Jeremy’s and is right at home on the kitchen island.

MODERN RENOVATION

The only structural change Jeremy made to the home’s layout was to remove a peninsula of upper and lower cabinets that divided the kitchen and an adjoining den, thus opening up those two rooms. In terms of function, the designer had a second sink added to the perimeter and built a larger island, both features that come in handy when entertaining. A playful tile underfoot, Ralph Lauren pendants with pleated shades over the island, and pops of pink give the rooms an updated, youthful feel.

“You don’t have to ask permission from a client when it’s your own house, but there’s kind of a burden to that, too. You have to make the decision.” —Jeremy Carter

An abstract painting by fellow local designer Joshua Plumlee hanging over the foyer fireplace sets the tone from the second you step foot in the front door.

62 At Home in Arkansas | October 2019

FIRST IMPRESSION

“It’s all about the juxtaposition,” Jeremy says, pointing to the varied time periods represented in his foyer while explaining the history behind the room’s unusual scale: It used to be a second living room. During the home’s 1924 renovation, the front door was moved from the formal living room to its current location, making this large, airy expanse the new foyer.

“They’re just little fun, funky things that I find. Things that are sentimental to me.” —Jeremy Carter

“The desk and the chair are an example of the mixture I like to do,” Jeremy says. “Even though it’s a French desk and it’s old, it still has a cleaner vibe with this chair.”

64 At Home in Arkansas | October 2019

MASTER INSPIRATION

Jeremy’s inspiration for the master bedroom started with a fabric he found at Cynthia East Fabrics. “I bought all of it they had, then I had David Peterson build the bed using it and recovered a settee I already had in the same fabric,” he says. “Then I was flipping through a book of wallcoverings one night and came across this grasscloth, and it kind of all fell into place.” He installed drapes behind the bed to cover two small windows and give the room a cave-like feel, but took the door off an adjoining sunroom so sunlight could still fill the room. A collection of sentimental art pieces and collected treasures is at his bedside.

A landing at the top of the stairs outside the master bedroom is what Jeremy refers to as “the gallery” because it plays host to more of his art and collections. The chandelier is original to the house.

Be Well 8 Tips for Taking Care of Yourself

3 EAT YOUR VEGGIES & FRUITS

1 DRINK UP

Mom was right: Getting enough fruits and vegetables in your diet has a variety of health benefits, including giving you nutrients, aiding in digestion, and helping to lose or maintain an ideal BMI.

Stay hydrated by drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. It improves brain function, can reduce caloric intake, and keeps you performing at peak.

2 GET SOME SHUT-EYE

Eight is also the magic number for sleep. Most experts agree you should aim for 8 hours of rest per night. Keep your room at your ideal temperature, store electronics out of sight and reach, and consider using a sound machine.

4 TAKE A WALK

Getting outdoors (or heading to the treadmill) can not only help trim your waistline, but may also help you keep your blood pressure in check and even ward off depression. Low on time? Incorporate quick walks (think 5-10 minutes around the block) into your daily routine.

5 TRY SOMETHING NEW

Keep your mind sharp by picking up a new activity, book, or skill. Not only will you feel accomplished with what you’ve learned, you may meet new people and continue to grow intellectually.

Don’t forget your teeth. Flossing daily can help remove plaque that will build up in your mouth and could eventually release toxins in the bloodstream. Remember to brush twice a day and visit your dentist for cleanings two times per year.

8 MAKE SELF-CARE A PRIORITY

Above all, take time for yourself. Whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood, taking a cooking class with friends, or simply making time to go to the doctor, don’t skimp when it comes to taking care of your health.

6 TONE UP

Did you know that lifting weights can boost your metabolism, help with balance and stability, and even reduce some joint pain? All are reason enough to grab the dumbbells.

UNWIND

carving out time Woodworking is a skillset not learned in a single front-porch sitting, but rather experienced over time through years of practice. Chisels, files, and planes bring to life forms that only the mind can see when the element is still in its rawest, most organic form. Be it a functional piece of furniture or a beautiful vessel, from an unwieldy piece of wood comes a work of art. Slowly, over time, the craftsman chips away at his medium until his vision takes shape.
