personal style Before I started working for At Home in Arkansas, I thought I knew my style. I thought it leaned more contemporary, maybe a little industrial even. I thought I liked my patterns and palettes sleek and minimal. But I’ve always had a hard time reconciling that aesthetic with my love of antiques and anything Photography by Rett Peek sentimental. I’ve been going to estate sales and vintage markets with my mom for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been a collector, though the feathers, tea sets, and comic books of my childhood have been replaced with rattan furniture, vintage rugs, and books arranged by color. So when I tried to force myself into a more modern aesthetic, no wonder it never felt quite right! My years with At Home have opened my eyes to the fact that design doesn’t have to fit into one box—usually, it’s more about balance. However, I still struggle with striking a balance that feels right to me, and I know many of our readers face the same challenge. That’s why we decided to dedicate an issue to helping you find your style. We featured homes that isolate three main styles—traditional, transitional, and contemporary—in hopes that showing them within the context of one another will help you identify where you fall on the style spectrum. Maybe you’ll be surprised by what you find.

Christen Byrd, owner of central Arkansas balloon-installation company Just Peachy, announced the opening of a new studio space in downtown Little Rock. Christen created her first balloon installation in July 2017 for the grand opening of Loblolly Creamery, where she was creative director. “I started getting occasional requests after people saw that first piece, but then decided to really start pushing it this year,” Christen says. In September, she phased out her role at Loblolly to focus on Just Peachy full time. The studio will offer a consultation area, workspace, a place for pick-ups, and even office space for her husband, Ryan’s, web design company Perch. “Both of our businesses started out of our home, and we have definitely outgrown it,” Christen says. Bear Cooking didn’t grow up going to the garden to get dinner.
Rather, he came of age in his family’s Benton barbecue restaurant, Smokey Joe’s. “I started bussing tables early on and then got more and more responsibility—by high school I was working there three or four nights a week,” he recalls. As he grew older, his love for meat continued when he began a career as a butcher. “Food just makes sense to me,” Michael says. That’s why it may come as a surprise to see him serving up vegan dishes on his Instagram account (@happybearcooking) and teaching classes with plant-based recipes in central Arkansas. “Meat was my world, but then I met my fiancée,” Michael says, referring to local photographer Stephanie Parsley, who has been vegan for more than five years. “I told her I would eat vegan food as long as I could cook it and make it taste just as good as the meat dishes I cooked,” he says. Today, Michael says he is 75 percent vegan, continually making new recipes to keep the idea (and his plate!) fresh. “My goal is not to make good vegan food, but rather good food that is vegan,” he says. Butternut Squash Pasta with Walnuts and Sage SHOP
1 pound small cupped, tubular, or ridged pasta (such as orecchiette) ½ lemon 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 pound butternut squash (about ½ large squash) kosher salt freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons vegan butter 1 small shallot, finely diced 15 sage leaves, finely minced, (plus extra unchopped leaves for garnish) ½ cup toasted walnuts
PREPARE Cook pasta, boiling two minutes less than package directions indicate. Reserve ½ cup of pasta water and set aside. Squeeze juice from ½ lemon over pasta. Peel, seed, and cut the butternut squash into ½-inch cubes. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over high heat until very

lightly smoking. Season squash with salt and pepper to taste and add to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, approximately 5 minutes or until browned and squash is tender. Add butter and shallots and continue cooking, stirring frequently, for approximately 1 minute. Add sage and stir to combine. Remove from heat.
Add pasta to the skillet with the squash mixture along with half of the reserved pasta water. Bring to a simmer over high heat and cook until pasta is perfectly al dente, stirring and tossing constantly. Add a splash of pasta water as needed to keep the sauce loose and shiny. Serve warm. Finish with sage leaves and toasted walnuts.

While Heather is an avid cook and enjoys trying new recipes alongside triedand-true favorites, she says she and Brian often have friends over for drinks. Thus, she was inspired to share a twist on a classic cocktail in the form of a slightly more savory rosemary old fashioned— the perfect complement to toast any fall soirée in the South.

For this fall gathering, the table is set with the couple’s everyday dinnerware, Lenox’s “Butler’s Pantry,” and accented with Spode’s “Woodland” salad plates. The silver belonged to Heather’s dad’s mother, whom she lovingly refers to as “the queen of hosting.” Stag-head glassware and a centerpiece of zinnias, millet, and feathers add to the outdoorsy feel.

1 cup sugar 1 cup water 2 stems rosemary COCKTAIL
2 ounces whiskey ¼ ounce rosemary simple syrup (recipe at right) 2 drops Woodford Reserve orange bitters (available through Southern Life) ice (Heather recommends one large square cube) rosemary sprigs, for garnish orange wedge or peel, for garnish

PREPARE
To make the simple syrup, combine all ingredients in small saucepan. Warm over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, remove rosemary stems. Simple syrup will last 2-3 days in an airtight container. To make the cocktail, pour first three ingredients over ice. Stir gently and garnish as you wish. Sip to enjoy!

Modern Revival More than five decades after it was built, a Fayetteville home designed by architect Ernie Jacks still serves as a testament to his craft Get Fayetteville native Justine Rose talking about her house, and her reverence for the man who designed it—midcentury modern architect Ernie Jacks—is abundantly clear. “Ernie was so forward thinking when building this house. He was very thoughtful in his placement of rooms, and even the placement of the actual house is amazing,” she says, referring to the way the home is built into a hillside overlooking Mount Sequoyah Woods. Ernie Jacks moved to Fayetteville in 1946 to take the University of Arkansas’s first architecture courses along with 16 other students—one of whom was Fay Jones, another notable Arkansas architect and the future namesake of the university’s School of Architecture and Design. Ernie’s career took him to New York, California, and back to Fayetteville, where he taught
architecture and took commissions— including Justine’s home, which was built in 1965. The first time Justine saw the house on the market, she wasn’t quite ready to commit. “It was darker and more masculine than I was used to,” she says. “Plus, it’s intimidating to update a home by an architect like Ernie.” But the second time she saw it for sale, she’d had a change of heart—thanks in part to a recent trip to visit her sister in California. “I was falling in love with this midcentury vibe I’d seen out there, but my aesthetic is lighter, airier,” she says. Inspired to breathe new life (and a West Coast flair) into this historic home, Justine took the plunge and bought the house. She and her husband, David, and sons, Jack, 15, and Eli, 14, moved from a more traditional home less than a mile away and got to work making it their own.

While Justine left the layout untouched, she painted select walls a creamy white to achieve the “lighter, airier” feel she desired. This allowed the remaining wood and brick found on the walls, ceiling, millwork, and floors to act as her accent colors. “I started off slow, and that’s when I started seeing the vision come to life,” she says. From there, Justine filled the home with comfortable, midcentury-inspired light fixtures and furnishings as well as accessories and art collected from estate sales and her travels over the years. The effect is a calming, Californiainspired retreat that preserves the integrity of the architect’s design. “We stayed within the footprint and the time period, but made updates to make it work for us and for today,” she says. DINING IN STYLE
In the kitchen, Justine installed new appliances, replaced linoleum flooring (which had been added in a previous renovation) with a large-scale 18-by-36-inch tile, and painted the island Sherwin-Williams’ “Iron Ore” to match existing pantry doors. Across from the island, a breakfast area overlooks the downstairs family room. Justine furnished this space with a sputnik-style light fixture and tulip table to speak to the home’s era.

In the dining room, a paneled wall of hidden cabinetry and open shelving are an example of the utilitarian considerations at the core of midcentury modern design. Another notable aspect of this room’s design is the use of floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors to emphasize the connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
Justine bought eight original Panton chairs—a style made famous by Danish designer Verner Panton in the 1960s—at an estate sale a year before she knew she’d soon be calling a midcentury house her home.

BEFORE MASTER UPDATES
The home’s four bedrooms can be accessed from a single hallway running the length of the north wing of the house. Justine used lavender tones and an upholstered bed to bring softness to the master bedroom, and the master bath received one of the biggest overhauls of the whole house—new vanities. “One thing we realized when we bought the house was how small everything was in 1965,” Justine says. “The sinks were about 26 inches high! And they were pink, and the rest of the house was so masculine.” Floating cabinetry and marble countertops, plus the same oversized tile found in the kitchen, bring the bath up to date while making it more user friendly.

Justine credits interior designer Casey Sarkin with giving her the courage to paint sections of the house. “She came over and saw the house, and she said, The best thing you can do is not be afraid to update this house. It’s your house, and it needs it,” Justine recalls. In painting a select few walls, Justine hoped to maintain the home’s overall style while giving the eye a chance to rest from time to time. An example of this is found in a sunken family room below the kitchen and breakfast area where only the built-ins are painted. White pendants repeated from the kitchen are original to the house, and the layout of the room is an example of the architect’s penchant for symmetry.

Even though I love the interest of doing all different kinds of design, I really have a passion for traditional style, and that’s even how I want to decorate my own space,” Krista notes. For the three-story house this Little Rock couple shares with their two young sons, the designer wanted to not only celebrate the home’s style but also the couple’s personal preferences. “It’s a traditional rock, Tudor-style home, so to go too contemporary or transitional on the inside wouldn’t make sense,” Krista says. “But they are a young family, so the design also needed to work with them in terms of functionality. It’s not your mother’s traditional, but it’s now and a little younger,” she adds. says

Krista brought in new furniture to complement artwork and accessories the couple already owned. “The settee is custom because we needed something small since it’s more of a pass-through room and entrance to the home,” the designer notes. “Its velvet covering is also super durable for the kids.” A pair of Hickory Chair armless chairs are covered in a striped fabric that combines all of the room’s hues.
FINE DINING
In the dining room, Krista added freshness with a new rug and fabric cushions on the chairs. The draperies and light fixture were existing and speak to the home’s overall style. “All of the lighting in the home is more traditional,” Krista says, “and all of it, from the sconces to the chandeliers, fits perfectly with the house’s Tudor-style.”

When Krista came to the project, the bones of many of the spaces had been recently renovated in a traditional style, including the kitchen. Upstairs, the couple updated the master bath to meet their needs, while a bunk room and expansive outdoor living area were added on the lower level. “For me, this job included lots of space planning, editing what they had, and bringing in new furniture and fabrics,” Krista notes. “When I came in, it was like, This is what we have to work with; tell us where it would look best or let us know if we need to get rid of it,” she laughs. “And we were able to find a place for many of the pieces they had and cherish.” To this point, pattern and color played a large role in the design. “They love blue—and so do I,” says Krista of the accent hue found throughout much of the home. Additionally, floral, striped, and fretwork fabrics—all of which have proven to stand the test of time—carry throughout the spaces. “She was drawn to floral, especially in the den,” Krista says of the homeowner’s preferences. “It’s a timeless look, and you aren’t going to get tired of it. After all, you’re investing in these pieces you’re going to have for a long time, and I think traditional style lends itself well to that.”

The kitchen connects to the less formal den space as well as a smaller butler’s pantry and the screened porch. It also serves as the family’s main dining space for casual meals. While the bones of the room were in place, Krista added a valance (in the same fabric as the den’s draperies) and low-profile barstools that wipe clean for easy care. The blue island is a more vivid take on the hue’s appearance throughout the home.

THE PLACE TO BE
“This is where they live all the time,” Krista says of the den that is a central stopping point with the kitchen, formal living room, and porch all radiating from it. The designer notes the floral on the sofa is a lively pattern, but its neutral palette keeps it easy on the eye. Krista sourced the art over the sofa from artist Lauren Barksdale, whom she discovered thanks to her years spent in Louisiana prior to moving home to Little Rock. “I really love introducing new artists to clients,” she adds.

All of the bedrooms, including the couple’s master suite, are housed on the top floor of the three-story home. In the bedroom, a mix of patterns adds interest while the united neutral palette brings a sense of calm to the room. The couple also redesigned the bath on their own shortly after moving to the home. The clawfoot tub, hardwood floors, and paneling all speak to their love of traditional design.

DINNER WITH A VIEW
The entry of the home opens to the formal dining room, a space that intentionally draws the eye to the landscape beyond. “This room speaks to how transitional the house is,” Talena say, noting the molding on the walls is typically thought of as a traditional element while the abstract works commissioned by artist Charlotte Caroom add a contemporary vibe. Similarly, a wooden table and chairs that lean classic are complemented by a more modern chandelier.
Providence Design, first met their clients, the west Little Rock lot where the family of four now lives looked very different—and even the vision for it wasn’t as clear-cut as it appears today. “They had been working with architect Jim Yeary on a plan, but the husband leaned more contemporary while the wife really liked a more traditional style,” Mona says. The designers shared their recommendations for the project, and the couple ultimately decided to wait a year before breaking ground. “After some time passed, we were all on the same page that this was going to be a contemporary house but with traditional features and furnishings,” Mona says. The mix of styles, known as transitional, evolved in both the exterior and interior to a customized aesthetic with the starting point stemming from an overriding feature unique to the property: the view. “Everything was about the windows and the view—the whole design was based on that,” Talena says. To this point, the siting of the house and the plan revolved around the natural scene playing out in the surroundings, including the Arkansas River as well as Pinnacle Mountain. “We knew one of the main things we wanted to accomplish in the plan was opening up the public spaces so you could take in the view,” adds Jim Yeary of Yeary Lindsey Architects.

However, Jim notes the unique location came with some site challenges. “Because of the steep drop off on the lot, we almost had to build it like a tree house, looking out over the forest.” This treetop feel is most apparent along the back of the linear-shaped home, where windows extended almost from one end to the other, bringing in light and allowing the owners to enjoy the ever-changing landscape. However, while clean-lined windows and a linear form are

hallmarks, an equal amount of traditional features grace the exterior as well as the interior furnishings. “We are seeing more and more people want a traditional exterior‚ something that goes with area, but inside they want it to be very clean—wide plank flooring, lots of windows, and not a lot of molding,” says builder Bill Parkinson. “It was going to be a family home from beginning to end—meaning very comfortable—
but with a clean, more modern style,” Talena adds. Case in point, features such as the lighting, plumbing fixtures, hardware, and accessories are sophisticated and sleek, while the wooden paneling on the ceiling and cozy, family-size sofas bring warmth in even the most grand of rooms. “If you step back and look, it’s not a real contemporary home; it’s transitional,” Mona says. “At heart, they are traditional people but they wanted the newer, modern style.”
LIVING ON THE EDGE
The family room connects to the kitchen, allowing everyone to be together in one space whether cooking, dining, or relaxing. Elements such as a framed customizable art TV, a pair of large sofas, and ottomans that can move around the room as needed bring comfort without sacrificing sophistication. Mona notes the pair of traditional chairs near the fireplace are covered in a contemporary fabric for an unexpected mix that’s truly the best of both styles.
RAISING THE BAR
Across from the breakfast nook sits a full-service bar with decorative-front cabinetry to display collectibles. Classic subway tile is laid in a herringbone pattern for a twist on traditional, while brass fixtures and hardware give a current polish.

“It’s almost like you are transformed when you walk in this space,” Mona says of the cozy yet sophisticated master bedroom. “It’s just so dramatic,” she adds, pointing out the juxtaposition of the grid windows and the perimeter of blue that covers the walls and ceiling. Talena notes the softness the bedding, rug, and drapes, in particular, bring to the space. “We love windows, and generally say the bigger the better, but I do think they always look better when they are dressed— particularly in a master bedroom,” she says.

Massimo Interior Design looks to a homeowner’s eclectic collections to create a modern townhouse design

hen the owner of this home came
Scott Paterek and Tammie Weaver of Massimo Interior Design, she was living in an English country-style home and looking to downsize—and make a rather drastic departure from the style of her home. “She was just ready for a change. She’s very artistic, and I think after years and years of tradition, she envisioned this cleaner palette for herself,” Scott says. Massimo took the lead on helping the homeowner through a massive renovation of a newly purchased townhome, which includes living spaces on the second floor (above a ground-floor garage and utility room) and bedrooms on the third floor. “The fireplaces and staircases remained in the same locations, but otherwise we gutted it,” Tammie says. Together, they worked with to

the owner to customize the home into the clean-lined, serene space she desired while working in a few nods to industrial style, some of her favorite antiques, and her extensive collection of art, acquired both locally and from afar. In making choices throughout the design process, Scott and Tammie took much of their inspiration from the owner’s art collection, letting black-and-white paintings and graphite drawings guide them toward dark pieces that would stand out against the all-white backdrop. Wood also acts as an accent throughout the home, adding warmth and texture to the design. “I’ve always had a little cleaner style, personally, but we try to avoid a stamped look in clients’ homes,” Scott says. “For this project, we kept in mind that the home needed to serve as a simple backdrop for her collection. It pushed us to think outside the box, for sure.”
INDUSTRIAL KITCHEN
While the home’s clean-lined simplicity continues into the kitchen—apparent especially in the lacquered cabinets—that element is juxtaposed with the warmth of the wooden island and curves of the industrial pendants and bar stools. “We knew you’d be able to see the dining table from here, and we wanted to continue that softness a little,” Scott says. A solid piece of stainless sheet metal serves as the backsplash, and cabinets overhead are translucent to offer ease of use while cooking as well as visual interest.
Modern glass-andmetal railings open up the two stairwells in the home. More of the homeowner’s personal art collection is displayed gallery style.
SEAT AT THE TABLE
Though technically the formal dining room, the straight lines, lack of ornamentation, and playful art—a portrait of the homeowner’s English sheepdog—keep this space down to earth. The table is repurposed from the owner’s previous country-style house and balances the more contemporary elements of the space and its adjoining kitchen and living room while adding character.

A metal bed frame brings the home’s industrial slant into the master bedroom, while the bedside tables are repurposed pieces from the owner’s previous home. There are also several instances where it’s hard to separate form from function in this room: The sculptural towers on each bedside table are actually bulb-less lamps (their internal ring glows), and nearby ottomans take the form of fluffy sheep with wood-carved faces.

The design team configured a sitting area in the master bedroom complete with a drafting table. On either side of the fireplace, glass-front armoires store the homeowner’s art supplies while helping her keep track of what items are stored where. “These work here because they have an old appearance, but they’re very sleek with rustic hardware,” Scott says of the case goods. “They’re, in essence, contemporary pieces, but they have a texture and roughness to them.”

A symmetrical shower configuration in the master bath showcases Scott and Tammie’s forethought for utility in design. A linen closet divides two spaces: on the right, a shower with a zero-threshold entrance, and to the left, a water closet with a wall-mounted toilet concealed by the frosted glass. Behind the linen closet, unused space was turned into shower cubbies and shelving for toiletries. Above the floating vanity, the mirror slides up to expose electrical outlets and even more concealed storage.

Hennard Custom Homes Dustin Hennard has been in the home-building industry since he was 17 years old. “I started framing houses for a local builder when I was in high school and fell in love with building,” he says. “At age 31, I was able to go out on my own and start my own company.” Hennard Custom Homes works relentlessly to create unique homes clients can’t find on the market.
