giving thanks After college, I did something I’d been dreaming of for what seemed like forever: I packed my bags and moved to London. I found a flat, explored the city, made friends from all over the world, and celebrated holidays—even the American ones—an ocean away. And Photograph by Rett Peek while I savored the excitement of these new experiences, I never felt the draw back to Arkansas more keenly than around Thanksgiving. I missed my loved ones; however, I knew I would be back in the mix of my boisterous family’s gatherings soon enough. I find myself reflecting on unconventional holidays of the past while thinking about broken traditions and missed celebrations this year. The pandemic has interrupted everything from graduation ceremonies, wedding plans, and anniversary trips to the comfort of our daily routines, and that’s only counting the smallest losses. However, if you’re like me, this year has also reminded you just how much you have to be thankful for. While our holiday this November might not look like it has in years past, I’m grateful for my crew’s health. More than ever, I’m also looking forward to those loud, fun-filled family gatherings that I know we’ll get to experience again soon.

What’s New? HEIGHTS GOLF LITTLE ROCK

This fall, father-son duo Chris and Casey Cerrato celebrate the opening of their specialty golf store, Heights Golf, in—where else?— Little Rock’s Heights shopping district. While the store is a full-service golf shop selling equipment and apparel, it’s also planned to be a space where golf lovers can congregate, watch golf on the store’s TVs, and even hit a few balls. “We’ll have two golf simulators, and anyone can come in individually or with a group and play a round of golf,” Casey says, noting the simulators will be open for reservations as well as walk-ins. “We’ll also have golf instruction where you can take lessons and get fitted for new clubs, plus repair and regripping. We wanted to create a place where you can get that one-on-one level of service with someone who’s knowledgeable about the sport.” Instruction and fittings will be provided by manager Jason McFarland. Heights Golf is located at 5815 Kavanaugh Blvd. in Little Rock. Visit heightsgolf.com for more information.

PORCH VIEW CONWAY

Todd Smith and Charlie Groppetti, owners of Park Hill Home, have announced the launch of a new line of home furnishings, accessories, and gifts called Porch View. “The new company will feature our signature style of a relaxed lifestyle,” Charlie says. “The brand reflects those casual living spaces where families often gather to relax and recall travels from their past, as well as contemplate new adventures ahead.” Fans of the pair’s previous collections will be glad to find that Porch View exhibits many of the influences they love most about Todd and Charlie’s designs. Porch View products will be available at Park Hill Home following an official launch at markets in January. Additionally, the designers have launched a line of candles called “Todd & Charlie” that are already in stock now at Park Hill Home. For more information, including a website launch and announcements about Porch View, keep an eye on Park Hill Home’s Facebook page (facebook.com/parkhillhome).

The popularity of Myquillyn Smith’s blog, The Nester, has allowed her to grow the site into a brand that encompasses everything from workshops and events to a series of coffee table books, the third of which is Welcome Home: A Cozy Minimalist Guide to Decorating and Hosting All Year Round. Welcome Home builds on Smith’s personal motto, “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.” Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm pays homage to the natural cane material that has become ubiquitous in recent years across all price points of home furnishings. Its author, Lulu Lytle, is co-founder and creative director of home furnishings line Soane Britain—which has, of course, its own rattan-weaving workshop. Entertaining Beautifully, written by modern style icon Aerin Lauder, is packed with entertaining ideas for more than 20 celebrations, all inspired by her signature elegant, layered look. We’re suckers for Alyssa Rosenheck’s “New Southern” aesthetic and her gorgeous photography, and there’s plenty of both to be found in New Southern Style: The Inspiring Interiors of a Creative Movement, which tours the homes of Gray Malin, Shea McGee, Sean Anderson, and 27 other creatives.

BEFORE

Sometimes you don’t know exactly what a room is missing until you see it completed. That’s how it was for Leslie and Aubrey Ziegler, who worked with interior designer Katherine Spicer to refresh several of the interior spaces of their newconstruction home. “We had a bunch of hand-me-down furniture and this and that from our old home,” Leslie says. “It was my mother who said, Leslie, you built that beautiful home, now you need to hire someone to help you finish it.” Leslie’s mother, Linda Thompson, decided to take matters into her own hands. She put her daughter in touch with Katherine, who immediately saw the potential for a more dimensional dining room. “The main feature they wanted to keep was the hutch, but it blended with the color of the walls,” Katherine says. Rather than re-painting, the designer picked out a plaid wallcovering that would coordinate with the color below the chair rail while providing contrast with the wooden hutch. Around the table, Katherine replaced mismatched wooden chairs with more comfortable and stylish upholstered options, as well as an antique church pew gifted to the Zieglers by a friend. “Katherine was great about incorporating things we already had but in completely new ways,” Leslie says. “The bench was sitting on the front porch, and I walked past and thought, Oh my gosh, we have to use it somewhere,” Katherine adds. Linen drapes, framed art prints, and a bright coat of paint inside the hutch complete the look.

FLORA FAVORITES

The Zieglers’ wedding china on display in the hutch pays homage to both Leslie and Aubrey’s love of science and their careers as medical professionals. “These dishes show all different botanicals, and I just loved how it shows the common name and Latin name,” Leslie says. Across the room, Katherine hung two framed, large-scale botanical prints to play off this collection.

“They were a little skeptical about wallpaper at first, but when they saw this pattern and the scale and color, it was a no-brainer.” —Katherine Spicer, designer

1

BAR BASICS

A tray table that formerly belonged to Leslie’s mom was turned into a bar. Over it hangs a framed print of “The Painter’s Honeymoon,” a memento from one of Leslie’s trips to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

2

SOLID CHOICE

Katherine chose solid drapery panels to coordinate with the room’s paint color and wallpaper. “Draperies always add some softness and coziness, and that additional fabric creates more interest,” she says. Linen fabric with a tailored pleat echoes the comfortable yet traditional aesthetic of the room.

3

THE PERFECT MOVE

Sconces that coordinate with the chandelier were originally placed too high on either side of the window. When they were moved to make room for the new draperies, Katherine had them installed on either side of the framed botanicals to create a focal point on what was previously a blank wall.

4

PALETTE & PATTERN

Blue performance fabric on the chairs and bench cushion pull the hue from not only the inside of the hutch and antique rug underfoot, but also other rooms throughout the house. “We have diamond shapes scattered here and there throughout the room, and I positioned the pattern on the back to kind of repeat that,” the designer says.

ONE CART, THREE STYLES

On a Roll

While holiday gatherings may be limited and smaller in size this year, there’s no reason you can’t open the bar. Here, Tipton & Hurst’s vice president and lead floral designer Chris Norwood uses pieces from the shop to style up three ideas that will take you from turkey to tinsel

GIVE THANKS

“This cart is bountiful and cozy,” Chris says of the rich color scheme as well as its beverage and snack selections, which include bourbon, red wine, cheese, and nuts. A dried-leaf wreath brings color to the bottom tier, while an artificial garland is accented with fresh seeded eucalyptus. Velvet pumpkins speak to a current trend, but could also be exchanged for seasonal gourds from the garden.

SEE WHAT SANTA BRINGS

Create a one-stop destination for the family on Christmas morning with a mimosa service and bite-sized pastry options. While the palette is traditional red and green, whimsy reigns in this design thanks to the addition of Mark Roberts Santa collectibles, which Chris notes can be positioned to sit, stand, kick, or even fly through your dĂŠcor. Fresh eucalyptus is tucked into artificial cedar garland while a matching wreath is attached to the lower base. Glass Simon Pearce trees echo the barware seen on the top tray.

With orange juice, donut holes, and colorful Santas, kids are sure to like this cart as much as adults.

“Today’s artificial cedar looks so good; you can have all the beauty without the hassle of shedding. I like to mix it with fresh eucalyptus that has a nice sage green color when it dries.” —Chris Norwood

RING IN THE NEW

If you’ve been counting the days until 2021, steal a few ideas from this zen-inspired cart. Bellinis are served in classic William Yeoward barware, while party crackers in the shape of Champagne bottles are a fun and festive way to celebrate the clock hitting midnight. The cedar garland and fresh eucalyptus from the Christmas cart remained in place for an easy-to-complete transition. A potted orchid sits on the bottom shelf alongside an offering of other beverage choices.

Birth of a ‘Wild Man’ He might now be known across the state as “Wild Man,” but once upon a time, Steve Wilson was just a guy who loved to spend time outdoors. “I’m a native Arkansan, born and raised, and I grew up fishing and hunting deer and squirrels. I loved being outside,” he says. “I went to Oklahoma for my college degree, but I could not wait to get back to Arkansas. It’s the best place in the world to be for nature lovers.” When Steve did make his way back to Arkansas after graduation, he fell into his 37-year career at the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission (AGFC) almost by chance. “I was at a gas station back in 1977, and I was driving this little ’59 Corvette,” he recalls. “This guy on the other side of the pumps pulled up in a green van from the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission. He started talking to me about the Corvette, and I started talking to him about hunting and fishing. He said, We have a job open, and you ought to apply.” Over his decades with AGFC, Steve filled various roles, including teaching hunter education training, coordinating public affairs, and heading up a project called Project WILD, an educational program about wildlife in Arkansas—and

also the origin of his moniker, “Wild Man.” “We had four Steve Wilsons at AGFC at the time, so that’s how I got my nickname,” he laughs. However, it’s likely Photo courtesy of Steve Wilson Steve’s nickname is due as much to his adventurous nature as to the program he once led. Through his appearances on TV and radio, he has become one of the most wellloved outdoorsmen in the state. While Steve retired from the AGFC in 2016, he kept his radio show, “Call of the Wild,” which you can catch Saturdays and Sundays on KARN 102.9.

BOUNTIFUL HUNTING

“We’re really blessed here in Arkansas to have so much public land for deer hunting,” Steve says. “I think some of my most cherished days are when me, my dad, and my brother would walk in the woods before season looking for deer signs.” For season dates and limits, Steve recommends checking the AGFC’s website (agfc.com/hunting). FEATURED FISHING

Steve says his favorite type of angling— particularly for brim, bass, and crappie—is done in smaller bodies of water. “I love small reservoirs, ponds, and creeks, and Arkansas is just full of them,” he says. “Crooked Creek in the Ozarks is one of my most favorite places to go. There’s Kings River around Berryville, and the Big Piney is just beautiful. I could go on and on.” MILES OF TRAILS

“Arkansas has abundant hiking trails. You could get on one at Pinnacle Mountain in Little Rock and stay on the same trail all the way to Oklahoma; that’s the Ouachita National Hiking Trail,” Steve says of the 222-mile route. “There’s also horseback riding trails, mountain trails, and even what they call ‘water trails’ in East Arkansas, which is flat water that you can explore by kayak or canoe.” WATCHABLE WILDLIFE

“One of my favorite things to do is send people to Ponca to see the elk. The AGFC reintroduced elk several years ago, and there are now maybe 600-700 elk you can watch every afternoon while they feed, an hour or so before sundown,” Steve says. “The older I get, the more I love what I call ‘watchable wildlife.’ I love just being outside and watching, maybe photographing and taking video of different animals.”

“To me, a perfect fall day in Arkansas would have two things: hunting and fishing.” —Steve “Wild Man” Wilson

INSIDE OUT

When Heather and Bryan Fuller were married in a west Little Rock barn 21 years ago, it wasn’t in the plan to move to the property where they said I do. “I never would have guessed we’d be living here and the barn would be a part of our lives forever,” Heather says of the picturesque property that is close enough to the city to allow for an easy commute but far enough away to reap the benefits of country living. “There was nothing out here at that time, and this piece of land had the barn and a cabin that was a bed and breakfast,” she recalls. The property had been offered to the couple before; however, in 2018 the timing seemed right, and they embarked on a journey to build a home reflective of their family, which includes teenage daughters Molly Kate and Parker and son, Jake. “I wanted a farmhouse, but I didn’t want it to be too farmhouse,” Heather says. “We were also trying to get into a smaller house; we wanted to go back to every space having a purpose, and this is where we landed.” Using exterior pictures she liked, Heather—who works with Finley Design Group—drew the interior plan herself, then took it to an architect to modify. Shortly after, builder Chuck Collins, a close friend of the couple’s, began to bring the vision to life. In terms of style, Heather calls the look “rustic, boho farmhouse.” “My family is from New Mexico and Texas, and I still have so much of that in me. I grew up riding horses and being out in the country,” she says in regard to her influences. This shows up in the material selections where small doses of shiplap speak to the farmhouse aesthetic, while cedar brings a rustic element to the balance. “I didn’t want the house to be so trendy that it wouldn’t age well. It’s comfortable and not so put together that you’re afraid to touch it,” she says.

From the front drive you can see the top of Pinnacle Mountain peeking over the house. The mix of cedar, navy, and white seen on the front exterior is reflective of what’s to come in the home’s interiors. “I am one that wants my house to be the same on the outside as it is on the inside, and I want it to be fitting wherever it is located,” Heather says.

The Fullers’ Goldendoodle, Ruby, leads the way to the kids’ space upstairs.

IN COLOR

“I try to push my clients to get away from monochromatic designs, so I said I will have some color in this kitchen. I literally picked this one and never looked back,” Heather says. Floating shelves near the range and the massive island, which seats five, provide ample storage. A light stain on the hood allows its grain and knots to stand out.

WIDE OPEN SPACE

Walking in the front door, the living space, dining room, and kitchen are combined into one large yet cozy area. A central fireplace gives definition to the different zones while providing both ambience and heat. The cased openings are covered with wood from a friend’s family farm, while the horns over the fireplace came from Heather’s grandfather’s farm. “Almost everything in this house was found somewhere,” she says. These pieces coupled with new upholstered furnishings create a relaxed vibe that doesn’t skimp on character.

IN THE MIX

In the dining room, a long, wooden table and upholstered chairs pair with airy, woven pendant lights from Ikea and a grandfather clock handed down to Heather from her mother. Portraits of the couple’s three children— each at age 3—hang over one set of doors leading to the screened porch. To maximize the view of Pinnacle Mountain, Heather opted for large-scale windows over upper cabinetry.

52 At Home in Arkansas | November 2020

MASTER RETREAT

In the master bedroom, white walls and window treatments mimic the bath’s clean, refreshed feel. The chandelier over the bed belonged to Heather’s grandmother’s, while the mirror has lived in different rooms in the family’s previous homes. Years ago, Heather managed the nowclosed local home store Carissa’s Antiques and Armoires. She won the leather chair and ottoman in a sales competition and has hung onto it as a special memory of that time in her life.

NATURALLY LIGHT

“We wanted the master bath to be really simple and functional and have tons of light,” Heather says. While the key elements are all white, there are variations on the hues, textures, and applications to bring visual interest. For example, subway tile in a herringbone pattern extends to the ceiling to draw the eye up, while a rich cream grout separates the tiles.

November 2020 | athomearkansas.com 53

FOR ALL SEASONS

Bryan enjoys working on the home and building furniture like the porch swing seen here where the couple’s daughter, Parker, is relaxing. The screened porch also has a dining area and a fireplace. “We like to open the doors and make this space feel like it’s a part of the house,” Heather says. “The breeze comes down off the mountain, and it stays really cool out here almost year-round,” she adds. The wrap-around side porch seen in the background holds a trio of hammock chair swings, another favorite hangout for both Heather and the kids.

54 At Home in Arkansas | November 2020

From stringed instruments to the piano, the entire family is musically inclined. Upstairs, a central space between the kids’ rooms offers a lounge spot where they can play together.

CLASSIC & CLEAN

Simple, basic, and industrial were Heather’s goals for the laundry room. Rolling baskets, one for each child, can be stowed under the counter and out of the way while clothes wash and dry. A farm sink speaks to the house’s style, while patterned flooring is equally practical and pretty. “We are big animal people and boot people so this was a great option for the floor,” Heather says. “Plus, it has a little personality!”

El Dorado native Michele Anthony had been living in downtown Fayetteville for several years when she got the itch to move to the country.

The idea started small, with Michele taking drives from time to time to look at property right outside of town. “I kept coming back to this land. There was something about it that spoke to me,” she recalls. “I could envision a house up on the hill and everything.” As soon as she purchased the property, Michele started to dream up the details of her ideal home. “Part of my inspiration was to bring in some of the features of my dad’s cabin in El Dorado, like the open concept, stone fireplace, and exposed beams,” she says. “But I also wanted it to have modern features so it didn’t look completely rustic.” Michele assembled a team of professionals, including Legend Builders and Parkco Architects, to help bring this concept to life. For interior design, she has her sister, Andrea Brooks, to thank for the introduction to Ashley Cardiel Interiors; Andrea was already working with the designer to remodel a house of her own in Fayetteville, and she suggested the two get together. “It worked out great, too, because Ashley got me very quickly. There were very few things she would show me that I didn’t like,” Michele says.

A stone firepit is situated in front of the house to take in the stunning view that led Michele to purchase the property. The semi-circular bench allows guests to pull up chairs when Michele and Kim entertain a crowd. For the exterior of the house, Ashley “embraced the beautiful greens of the woods around it” and echoed the use of wood, stone, and iron seen inside the home.

Michele (right) with her girlfriend, Kim Phillips, and their dogs, Shasta and Mae Mae.

That client-designer connection was one that Ashley felt from the start, too, particularly given the home’s rural setting. “I grew up in the country, maybe five miles from where this house now stands,” Ashley says. “Michele was drawn to the land and to connecting with the animals and nature all around. I was like, I know this, I can tap into this.” One of the ways she connected the home to its surroundings was in using natural materials, like stone and wood, wherever possible. “We always take the time to establish the conceptual big picture early on, and it makes all the little decisions along the way easier to make because they’re pointing toward that end goal,” Ashley says.

STRONG CENTER

The starting point for the design was in the great room, which encompasses a living room, dining room, and kitchen all centered around a striking stone fireplace. “The great room speaks to modern living,” Ashley says, noting the open concept helped steer the home from less of a cabin feel to a more contemporary space. The openness is also conducive to entertaining, which Michele says is an essential function of her home. Identical light fixtures over the kitchen island and dining table play off the strong sense of symmetry around the fireplace.

“Part of my inspiration was to bring in some of the features of my dad’s cabin in El Dorado, like the open concept, stone fireplace, and exposed beams.” —Michele Anthony, homeowner

SITTING PRETTY

“The scale of the great room is so amazing, so one of the challenges we had was to create smaller, more intimate spaces within a room that doesn’t have walls,” Ashley says. To accomplish this, she furnished the seating areas with pieces that allow for flexible conversation zones, like swivel chairs around the fireplace and an easy-to-move daybed. An abstract painting by Little Rock artist Joshua Plumlee ties in the soft blue found throughout the design.

Nods to Mother Nature are found in almost every detail, such as this treeshaped table base.

“It’s really important for me to share this space with family and friends because I’m so grateful to have it.” —Michele Anthony, homeowner

In the dining room, the modern nature of the custom wood and iron dining table is balanced by softer, more traditional slipcovered dining chairs.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

The kitchen started with a trip to the stone yard, where Ashley and Michele selected the perfect slabs of quartzite for the countertops. “It’s a durable yet natural stone with some really pretty greens and blues, as well as a rust-colored brown that warms it up,” Ashley says. She paired this with a feminine pastel shade on the cabinetry to soften the space. Open shelving provides Michele and Kim a place to display collected pieces as well as everyday dishes, and the barstools feature an iron joinery detail that mimics the construction of the beams overhead in the great room.

DIFFERENT TAKES

“Saybrook Sage” by Benjamin Moore

One challenge Ashley encountered during this project was the great room’s abundance of wood. “When you get a lot of wood in a space, it can feel heavy, but with all the natural light coming in, we still wanted the home to feel light and bright and airy,” she says. To this end, different finishes were carefully chosen to create contrast between the surfaces. While the hardwood floors are stained and the ceiling was given a whitewash treatment, cerusing adds interest to the kitchen island.

ALL ABOUT BALANCE

In the home office, Ashley tempered the more masculine tone of the built-ins with a sparkling crystal chandelier. Among the shelves, Michele’s tiny childhood cowboy boots are perched alongside mementos from traveling and a treasured family photograph. While this room gets plenty of use as a study and working office, a pullout sofa allows it to easily transition into an additional guest space, too.

SOOTHING RETREAT

The element of water inspired almost every detail of the master suite, from the veining in the granite countertops and tumbled pebbles underfoot in the bathroom to the pattern in the bedroom curtains. “I love that I can escape down here and see the pool and hear the waterfall,” Michele says of the view from her bedroom window. “Everything is very soothing and serene in here. I wanted it to be a place where I could come on a busy day and rejuvenate.”

Josh and Britni with their son, Lincoln. Not pictured: daughter, Alex.

Making their home in a Jonesboro subdivision was not part of the plan

Britni and Josh Brown. “We had purchased 10 acres, revised a house plan, and were pulling the permit to build when we got a call about this house,” Britni says. However, with a wooded landscape, nine acres to roam, and even backyard access to a lake, the property hardly felt like it was in the middle of a neighborhood. “I’m attracted to older homes, so I wanted to see this house,” Britni says. “And, as soon as I saw the backyard, I fell in love. We couldn’t have gotten the natural landscape on the other land.” While the setting drew the couple in enough to lay their plans to build aside, the interior of the home also spoke to them. “I knew there was a lot of potential inside,” Britni says. Having built a home once before, she recalls not being hands-on during the process and felt like the outcome didn’t truly reflect their tastes. “I thought, Styles are going to change, so you might as well do what you want,” she recalls. for

YEAR-ROUND RETREAT

“We spend a lot of time outside but were missing a gathering place out here,” Britni says. “We added this during quarantine, and now we eat dinner here four or five nights a week.” The structure provides shade after swimming in the nearby pool, while a fireplace offers warmth during cooler months. Lauren brought the look of the interiors outside with a concretetopped dining table from Article paired with green chairs.

“I wanted a place where people feel welcome; a place that is easy and not intimidating.” —Britni Brown, homeowner

Josh mentioned their friend (and At Home in Arkansas art director) Lauren Cerrato’s Instagram account to her, and it became apparent the two shared a similar aesthetic. “She had a bunch of images saved, and it was funny because I had some of the same ones,” Lauren says. Lauren not only got the style direction but also understood the overall aura the couple wanted their home to have. “I wanted a place where people feel

68 At Home in Arkansas | November 2020

welcome; a place that is easy and not intimidating,” Britni says. “In the whole design process, casual and family friendly were the main goals,” adds contractor Tommy Westbrook, who also worked alongside the couple from the start. Updates like removing a wall between the kitchen and living room, creating an island for gathering, and building an outdoor pergola all speak to this and allow the family—and their guests—to enjoy time together.

Britni uses the map in the entry to pray for people around the world.

A mix of plaid, stripes, and geometric prints make the guest room a focal point at the top of the stairs.

COMFORTABLE & COZY

A wall came down to connect the kitchen and living room, while a set of glass-paned doors remained to retain character. These, along with the banister, were given a coat of black paint to accentuate their dimension. Throughout the home, tile floors were traded for wood while white walls give a fresh backdrop for warmer accents. In the living room, the coffee table and a brown sofa from their previous residence made the move, while all the other pieces were purchased to complete a look truly reflective of the Browns’ style. An oversized, colored version of each family member’s thumbprint creates a wall of artwork unique to them.

November 2020 | athomearkansas.com 69

The dining area adjoins the kitchen and features a stone fireplace, liveedge table, and leather chairs, all of which speak to the home’s natural surroundings.

MODERN NATURE

Removing the wall between the kitchen and living room eliminated some of the cabinetry storage. To remedy this, the team created a 14-foot island with plenty of space for organization as well as seating. Waterfall quartz countertops encapsulate the structure for a more contemporary feel, while the mix of olive green and unfinished maple cabinetry along with black and brass accents keep the look grounded.

70 At Home in Arkansas | November 2020

HIS DOMAIN

Since the Browns didn’t need a formal dining room, this space was converted to Josh’s office. “The idea was to keep him where he still felt part of what's going on, even if he had to work,” Tommy says. “The custom-built hutch serves as a coffee area and storage piece but doesn’t give off a study vibe,” he adds. A sleek desk styled after a WWII plane wing sits in front of the hutch. “Cheating Heart” by Benjamin Moore

“The navy here, the green in the kitchen, and the black throughout work together because they’re all very dark, muted, and subdued,” Lauren says. She filled the built-in with orange and brown pottery pieces that stand out and added in family photos Josh cherishes as a personal touch.

DOWN TO EARTH

In the master bedroom, a single-piece headboard and shelving unit has a low profile against a wall that holds a tapestry (an Etsy find) featuring earth tones. Near the window, a swivel chair that can easily pivot to take in the outdoor scene offers a quiet place for reading and reflection. A work crafted entirely from nails on a canvas by Jonesboro artist Beau Jones depicts Jesus wearing the crown of thorns.

RELAXING RETREAT

“This is a really cool before and after because the entire space by the window was a built-in Jacuzzi tub,” Lauren says. One side of the tub’s alcove features a floating vanity and a television while the opposite has a window and bench. “They love to take baths, so I feel like this space was made for someone who actually appreciates the tub,” she adds, noting the scenic view of the private backyard. Matte black tile, a fringed light fixture, and walnut his-and-hers vanities call back to the organic nature of the design.

Parkinson Building Group Bill Parkinson founded Parkinson Building Group in 1999 and focused on remodeling work in Hillcrest. Through the years, the company has grown and evolved to include high-end, custom homes in addition to large scale renovations. “To me, custom home building is about creating a home that is deeply personal to someone. As such, we believe our role is to advise and serve our customers to create a home that meets— or better yet, exceeds—that goal,” Parkinson says of his team’s guiding role. As the Parkinson Building Group team continues to grow, they remain focused on that goal. They begin each new build by gathering information and creating a step-by-step process to align with their client’s vision and carry that vision through to completion.

The Preserve at The Woodlands In business for more than 40 years, Bosley Construction, Inc. is a third-generation, family owned company. “Home building is what we know. Chip and I were raised in the industry, visiting job sites and builders conventions since we were little,” says vice president Brennan Bosley of he and his brother, president Chip Bosley. This year, the Bosleys are proud to introduce The Preserve at The Woodlands,

a new residential development in Benton. “We strive to make this so much more than just another neighborhood,” Brennan says, noting 3.5 miles of walking trails, a private fishing pond, and community pool are among the development’s many amenities. “In planning this development, we have gone to great lengths to preserve some of the acreage to be used for people to get outside and connect with each other

and nature. We are really seeing this neighborhood come alive with people planning events such as front yard concerts and events at the pool,” he adds. Lots at The Preserve at The Woodlands range from ¼ acre to 4 acres, and Bosley Construction works to make sure each home fits its future owner’s style and needs. “Every home built is customized and drawn to fit its specific lot, so no two

homes look alike. We build to suit,” Chip says. Additionally, the plan design, interior and exterior finishes are overseen by Keri Bosley. “We all pay close attention to every detail in the homes we build,” Keri says. “Knowing a new home is most likely our clients’ biggest investment, we treat every job site like it’s our very own home.”

Clearwater Construction After working as a construction superintendent for a local mass-production company, Jon Dennie founded Clearwater Construction in 2008. Since then, he has welcomed both new construction and remodeling projects that present a challenge and are unique in nature. To keep clients connected, Jon and his team members utilize an app with access to daily logs, change orders, and design selections. “We couple all of that with a family atmosphere that we feel is most beneficial for a successful project,” he says. The builder encourages clients not to rush the house plan process, but rather to envision how you will live in the home to create the best outcome. “If you want to be happy for years to come, you need to think down the road,” he says. Currently, Jon says he is seeing a number of minimalistic modern plans with less square footage take the place of the larger building footprints of the past. “Building a home is supposed to be a memorable and enjoyable experience, and the contractor/ client relationship should be viewed as a partnership,” Jon says. “If you go into the process with the right mindset and expectations, there is no reason you can’t walk away from it with everything you want.”

In fact, they were the recipients of an energy-efficiency award by the US Green Building Council in 2019. “This home is the first single family residence to meet LEED Platinum v4 in the U.S., and it is the only ‘net zero’ home in central Arkansas,” Keith says of the award-winning space. River Rock Builders is also known for taking on rugged terrain and

other challenging pieces of property. “We always advise prospective clients to fit their house plan to the topography, not try and force it the other way around,” Keith says. No matter your building needs, Keith’s advice is always to ask prospective builders, Have you done this before? As part of their design-build process, River Rock Builders uses 3D software to help clients visualize the end result from the very beginning. “It’s then very fulfilling to build what we’ve helped create for each client,” Keith says.

Carl Gray Henson Builders

Homeowners have trusted Carl Gray Henson to build their custom homes for more than three decades. In fact, it’s the business of returning clients that Carl’s wife, Kathy, says is a testament to their reputation. Since 1990 the business has developed into a company devoted to helping clients create dream homes while remaining small enough to give each customer the personal attention he or she deserves. Carl and his team work tirelessly with their clients on lot selection, design, construction, and service after completion. According to

Kathy, “Homeowners today are very smart. They’re knowledgeable about what they want in their home. One of Carl’s strengths is keeping clients informed about what is going to work or not in their plan,” she says. “He also works hard at keeping them within budget so there are few surprises at the end of the project.” While Carl prides himself on creating homes with timeless appeal, the current customization requests he is seeing are “smart home” technology,” safe rooms, custom office designs, and mother-inlaw suites.

Hennard Custom Homes Dustin Hennard has been in the home-building industry since he was 17 years old. “I started framing houses for a local builder when I was in high school and fell in love with building,” he says. “At age 31, I was able to go out on my own and start my own company.” Hennard Custom Homes works relentlessly to create unique homes clients can’t find on the market. He encourages clients to make thoughtful decisions during their build. “Budgeting and

making concessions for overruns, scheduling, and being patient are all part of the process,” Dustin says. “There should be a realistic budget, but you don’t want bottom line to be the deciding factor on everything.” In the end, he believes every custom build (or even semi-custom build) should showcase the client’s style. “That’s what is fun and specific for our industry,” Dustin says. “Everyone is different so you get to know the needs of the customer and cater to those needs.”

Spradlin Homes Harold Spradlin launched Spradlin Homes in 2016 after decades in various construction roles and he and his team approach each new project with their motto “Building Memories” in mind. “When we create a home, we’re creating a space for love, for family, and I care a lot about that,” Harold says. To that end, Spradlin Homes believes communication is of top importance in the building process. “If you’re on the same page, it’s going to be a good experience for both of us,” he says.

Whether starting a new build or remodeling project, Spradlin Homes is committed to setting a budget early and sticking to it. “We pick out all materials at the beginning so the client gets a true estimate, plus they can see how it’s going to come together visually,” Harold says. It’s also the company’s flat-fee rate structure that sets them apart. “I’m an open book, and I feel the client can always trust my advice because my answer is not tied to a cost-plus fee,” he says.

Recently, Mark says he’s come to the realization that he’d

like to keep his business small to preserve client relationships.”I really love being hands on in every aspect of the build and having a personal relationship with my clients,” he says. Indoor-outdoor living spaces, modern designs, and attention to detail have all become the “new standard” in Mark’s projects. “I try to learn something new from others in the industry and from every build that I do focusing on design, integrity, budget, and client relationship.” he says.

“Art pottery” refers to handmade ceramic pieces that rose in popularity during the early 20th century. In Arkansas, a line known as Niloak was produced in Benton. Made using the locally found Kaolin clay (which also gives the pottery its name, as Kaolin is Niloak spelled backwards), the pieces were first seen in 1910. The line continued to be made through the mid-1930s until the company moved into a wartime-production mode and eventually dissolved. Vases, cups, and planters in solid hues with either little decoration or in the shape of animals were produced alongside the company’s “Mission Swirl” pattern (not pictured), which has a marbled appearance. Identifying marks include everything from “Benton, ARK” (one of the earliest) to Niloak stickers. Today, earth tones and simple silhouettes have played a role in the pottery’s continued appeal. Start your own collection of Arkansas art pottery with Niloak and other brands, such as Camark and Dryden, by visiting local estate sales and vintage markets around the state and beyond.
