merry memories Every year in early December as I start to unwrap the tissue around our collection of Christmas ornaments, I’m hit by waves of nostalgia. “Look, my mom gave me this one the year I started sewing!” I say, showing my husband a small gold ornament in the shape of a purse. When I unwrap a wooden figurine of Photography by Rett Peek Mother Goose, I imagine my sister’s coordinating Little Bo Peep that used to hang beside her on our parents’ tree. Probably my favorite of these relics is a shiny iridescent unicorn I picked out at a holiday market when I was about 4 years old; I loved it so much I begged my mom to let it share the bed with me (ouch!). We reached a compromise and the pointy thing stayed the night on my bedside table. There are newer memories represented on our tree as well. And by the time we’ve been married for 20 years instead of two—or when my sister’s kids head off to college—the turtle ornament from our honeymoon in Belize and the baubles painted by our niece and nephews’ tiny hands will hold even more meaning than they do now. One of my favorite things about our December issue is seeing the different ways people celebrate the holidays, whether it’s with Elf on the Shelf hidden in the tree (page 54) or sipping hot cocoa around the kitchen island (page 41). I know I plan to try at least one of the recipes in this issue (page 33)—and who knows, it might become a family favorite! I hope this issue brings you joy as you settle in to celebrate the holidays. On November 16, husband-and-wife team Niki and Jesse Weegens opened the first retail space for their custom furniture brand, American Estates. The couple have been crafting furniture for local coffee shops, restaurants, and retail stores since 2015 but have recently expanded their staff to make pieces more readily available. “We’re opening the showroom to make our goods more accessible to homeowners and give them the opportunity to set up appointments to talk with us about custom furniture designs and finishes,” Jesse says. The showroom will also have in-stock furnishings for sale as well as décor, rugs, and art—all of which fit the brand’s “urban industrial” aesthetic. From coffee tables to dressers, they create statement pieces built to last a lifetime using wood sourced primarily from the Ozarks. “We love having a connection to our community and celebrating where we live,” Jesse adds. Arkansas native Ashley Childers, who is the designer behind the Emporium Home furnishings line, recently launched a new jewelry line. The eponymous brand features necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings, all of which have been hand-sketched by Ashley in her Little Rock studio. She then partners with artisans around the globe to create the designs and personally selects all the semi-precious stones used. “Jewelry is personal, and it’s a reflection of our style. Most women have signature pieces they wear almost every day—pieces that have special meaning to them or that make a statement and show off who they are. I designed the Ashley Childers collection with those things in mind,” she says. Melody and Judge Chris Piazza asked friend and designer Mara Malcolm to update their home’s family room, she knew it would have to feature elements that catered to the smallest member of the family: the couple’s beloved pug, Pete. “I know how much they love Pete, so when I began designing I put a picture of him on the mood board. He is fawn, gray, and black, and honestly everything just came organically from his coat—and they loved it,” Mara says. Of course, while they loved the reference to Pete, the room also had to feel good to the couple, who recently became empty nesters. “They have very busy schedules, so this needed to be a place where they could truly be comfortable,” Mara says of the “fresh but not too formal” approach. “This is a room that feels as good as it looks— and it wears well,” she adds, pointing to plush carpet underfoot and an abundance of upholstered pieces. For the transformation, Mara updated paneled walls with gray paint. “The paneling was beautiful, and that’s hen

something I would normally keep, but even after cleaning it, there was an orange tint that couldn’t be removed,” the designer says. Working with the new neutral base, chairs and a sofa in a range of colors and coordinating patterns were selected to provide plenty of seating. Mara also infused the space with polished accessories, meaningful art, and a happy purple hue—seen most vividly on the tufted ottoman, which coordinates with the style of the Chesterfield sofa. “I don’t like predictability in design. I like juxtaposition of color and style and finishes. When done well, I think it adds interest and character and helps a space feel curated,” Mara says.

“The carpet is a huge part of why this room feels so good,” Mara says. She initially considered wood, but felt you couldn’t get the same comfort underfoot. The transitional print blends with the room’s mix of modern and traditional.

Mara says that even in rooms with cool palettes, she likes to add warmth with a variety of pillows. The animal print option is what she calls “a hint of the unexpected.”

Patterns and finishes abound in the room, and the hardware on the new built-in is no exception. A floral motif coordinates with the mix of geometric fabrics while also speaking to the numerous finishes seen in the space.

A range of grays, including the custom wall color, draperies, and hardware blend together harmoniously. “I like to use a solid fabric that is close to the wall color for draperies when possible,” Mara says. “It’s a great way to free up room in the budget for beautiful trim (like the Greek Key option here) and rods.”

It doesn’t take much to transform JoBeth McElhanon’s west Little Rock home into a winter wonderland. With a base of neutrals and greens, the addition of a few pops of red and an abundance of nutcrackers make the place come alive for the holidays. However, JoBeth, owner of event styling company Lilias & Olive, hasn’t always leaned on the classic Christmas color palette for the holidays. “I’ve had really neutral Christmas décor for years where everything was gold and white, maybe with some gingham,” she says. But when her 3-year-old son, Harrison, took a shine to her nutcrackers last Christmas, she couldn’t help but go with it. “I had not gotten them all out and displayed them like this in a really long time, but he just loved them,” JoBeth says. “The red in them really dictated the colors I used.” To that end, JoBeth used the collection—displayed both on the entry table in the foyer and on the kitchen table—as a kick-off point for an easy holiday gathering. “I wanted something very simple; something where

you could ask the neighbors over and tell them to bring their kids,” she says. In addition to a nutcracker centerpiece on the kitchen table, she used a paper table runner and placemats for quick clean-up. On the menu are an ice cream-based punch and iced muffins, both of which are perfect for a morning gathering anyone can pull off in the midst of a busy month.
The table and chairs in JoBeth’s breakfast area are indicative of her timeless aesthetic. The classic bamboo-back chairs once sat around a glass-top table, which she recently swapped for this wooden style. “Once we had a toddler in the house, we pulled in a farm table, and I mixed that with a bench that was easy for him to sit on,” she says. “This was also the first year we didn’t use a real garland, but faux. Things evolve once you have a family.”

SWEET STORYTELLING
For the tabletop, JoBeth was inspired by the classic ballet’s Land of Sweets. “There’s a lot of different candies representing the different dances,” JoBeth says pointing to chocolates, coffee candies, and peppermints scattered on the table. “When I’m planning an event— whether it’s for work or at home—there’s always a story, and I like to hide little bits of that throughout the design,” she says.

JoBeth’s first nutcracker (seen on the far right of the kitchen table display) was given to her by her mother at age 11. “It was the first year to have The Nutcracker ballet in my hometown, Blytheville, and I played Clara,” she says. Over the years, she has been gifted more soldiers to add to her collection and picked out a few she thought her husband and son might like, as well.

1 pint peppermint bark ice cream 1 pint chocolate ice cream 3-4 cups cold brew coffee (Tip: Use decaf for kids!) whipped cream, peppermint sticks, and sprinkles, for garnish
PREPARE
Scoop ice cream into a large bowl and cover with coffee. Stir until slightly melted. Serve topped with whipped cream, peppermint sticks, and sprinkles. Sip and enjoy!

Walnut and Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

In addition to ingredients listed below, have extra flour and butter on hand to grease pans 3 cups self-rising flour 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 4 eggs (room temperature) 2½ cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 15-ounce can solid pumpkin 1 cup canola oil ²⁄3 cup orange juice ¾ cup chopped walnuts ½ cup chocolate chips
PREPARE Yields 2 loaves
Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift flour, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and salt into one bowl and set aside. Combine eggs, sugar, and vanilla in another bowl and blend at medium speed for about 2 minutes, or until smooth. Mix in canned pumpkin, oil, and orange juice. Fold sifted dry ingredients into wet mixture until well combined, then add most of the chocolate chips and all of the walnuts. Pour mixture into two greased and lightly floured loaf pans, and top with remaining chocolate chips. Bake for 5560 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before serving. Note: You may substitute walnuts for pecans or omit nuts entirely. This recipe can also yield one bundt cake instead of two loaves.

In addition to ingredients listed below, have milk and extra flour on hand 1¼ cup cornstarch 1¼ cup self-rising flour 2 sticks unsalted butter 1 egg yolk 10 tablespoons powdered sugar, divided 1 13-ounce can dulce de leche (Sole suggests looking in the Spanish food aisle of your grocery store)
PREPARE
Yields approximately 50 alfajor cookies Combine cornstarch, flour, butter, egg yolk, and 6 tablespoons powdered sugar in a food processor and pulse several times until a dough is formed. Consistency should be firm enough to roll out, similar to pie dough. Add 1 tablespoon of milk if necessary; repeat until correct consistency is reached. Cover dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 330°F. Roll refrigerated dough out on a floured surface until ¹⁄8 -inch thick. Using a 1-inch round or fluted cookie cutter, cut dough into circles. Place cookies on baking sheets lined with parchment paper and bake for 17 minutes, or until cookies are firm to the touch and a light golden color. Allow to cool. For filling, spread dulce de leche on one cookie, keeping the amount of filling about as thick as each cookie. Put another cookie on top to form a sandwich and sprinkle finished alfajores with powdered sugar.

Peppermint Chocolate Brownie Cookies

1 box brownie mix (Abby recommends Betty Crocker Triple Brownie Fudge Mix) ½ cup flour ½ cup mini chocolate chips 5 tablespoons oil 1 tablespoon water 2 eggs ¼ cup chocolate or vanilla almond bark 8 candy canes or peppermint sticks
PREPARE Yields 12 cookies
Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine brownie mix, flour, chocolate chips, oil, water, and eggs in a large bowl. Form dough into 12 cookies and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes, being careful not to over-bake. While cookies cool, crush peppermints in a plastic zip-close bag. Melt almond bark in the microwave for approximately 2 minutes, or until smooth, stirring at 30-second intervals. Drizzle melted bark on cooled cookies and top with crushed peppermint.

1 16.5-ounce roll of refrigerated sugar cookie dough 3 tablespoons molasses ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¾ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground allspice ¼ teaspoon ground cloves 1 package white frosting (Abby recommends Wilton Cookie Icing) CUPCAKES
12 vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting 12 sprigs rosemary 1 cup candied cranberries shredded coconut cinnamon
PREPARE
Yields 12 cupcakes To make the gingerbread cookies, crumble cookie dough in a large bowl. Stir in molasses, then remaining ingredients (except frosting); mix thoroughly with hands. Divide dough in half, forming into two discs. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1-2 hours or until thoroughly chilled. Heat oven to 375°F. Take one chilled disc of dough and roll it out to ¼-inch thick on a floured surface. Cut with mini, floured gingerbread cookie cutters. Place cookies 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake 7-9 minutes, or until cookies are set and light golden brown around the edges. Let cool on cookie sheet for 3 minutes, then move to cooling rack to cool completely. Outline the cookie with your favorite cookie frosting, adding designs and features as desired. To garnish cupcakes, firmly place gingerbread men in the frosting of each cupcake. Add 3 candied cranberries in front and a sprig of rosemary behind the cookie. Sprinkle shredded coconut and cinnamon on top. Note: To make candied cranberries, coat fresh cranberries in a simple syrup. Let cool, then roll in sugar and allow time for them to harden. To simplify this recipe further, Abby recommends store-bought candied cranberries and Pillsbury’s Gingerbread Cookie Mix.

2 cups heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder SOAKED LADY FINGERS
1½ cup warm water 3 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 tablespoon instant espresso 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur (optional) 32 ladyfinger cookies
THE ADDITION OF CHOCOLATE TO THE CUSTARD IN MATCHA’S MOCHA TIRAMISU GIVES A HOLIDAY TWIST TO THIS DECADENT DESSERT.
PREPARE
Yields 12-16 servings To make custard, whisk egg yolks and sugar with a stand mixer on high speed until mixture is thick. (Mixture should be pale in color and falling slowly off the whisk.) Melt chocolate chips and heavy cream in the microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted. Pour melted chocolate, mascarpone cheese, and vanilla extract into egg mixture. Whisk on medium speed until well combined. Pour custard in a large bowl and set aside. To create cocoa whipping cream, whisk heavy cream, sugar, and cocoa powder with stand mixer on medium speed for about 1 minute, then turn up to high until mixture forms stiff peaks. (Pro tip: Put a kitchen towel over the mixer to avoid splatter!) Fold cocoa whipping cream into the custard until well combined, being careful not to stir. In a small bowl, whisk warm water, cocoa powder, instant espresso, and coffee liqueur until combined. Dip ladyfingers one by one into the mixture, then arrange in a single layer in a 9-by-13inch baking dish. Pour half of the custard mixture over the ladyfingers and distribute evenly. Place another layer of soaked ladyfingers on top and distribute the rest of the custard mixture over the second layer of ladyfingers. Use a small sift to dust the whole dish with cocoa powder. Cover the dish, making sure it is airtight, and refrigerate overnight before serving.

“I have been in love with this Hygge & West wallpaper for years, and when we moved in, I knew this would be the perfect spot for just a little peek of it,” Stephanie says. “I love it every day.”
Stephanie and Zack Smith started thinking hen
about building their fourth home together,
they had their eye on a certain piece of property down the road from where they were currently living. “It’s wooded and really pretty, and we could just see the way the lot would flow,” Stephanie recalls. “We left as many trees as

we could for privacy, and then we decided to build a cottage-style house, which seems suited to the woods.” The couple, who are no strangers to the building process—Stephanie is an interior designer under the name Zook & Pepper Interior Design & Build, and Zack owns Zack Smith Construction—found a plan by Texas architect David Wiggins that suited their needs perfectly. Zack built the house, and Stephanie
Stephanie says she, Zack, and their four children— Carson, 16, twins Cassius and Collin, 14, and Cai, 8— have a tradition of listening to music and drinking hot chocolate while they prep for the season.

got to work picking finishes and details for the interiors to make it their own. The result is an inviting, cabinlike home where the family of six spends time (and celebrates the holidays!) together. “We love the open floor plan,” Stephanie says. “At our last house, all the kids’ rooms and their TV room was upstairs, so they spent a lot of time up there. But here, it’s nice to all be out in the open.”

While all the walls are white, Stephanie painted the kitchen island and lower cabinets black to provide contrast. “I felt like the room needed some depth with it being so open to the living room, and the black really grounds the kitchen,” she says. She swapped upper cabinets for open shelving and chose a classic square subway tile to keep the kitchen’s style clean and linear.

MEANINGFUL MIX
The dining room showcases Stephanie’s passion for incorporating sentimental pieces into a home, whether it’s hers or a client’s. “I love taking what somebody has and shedding a new light on it,” she says. The china cabinet, table, and host and hostess chairs were Stephanie’s grandmother’s; she has painted the cabinet and chairs over the years but left the table untouched. “I love the fact that it’s my grandmother’s and she gave it to us, but I wanted to make it mine.” The antiques mix with midcentury-style metal chairs and a modern farmhouse chandelier as a further reflection of Stephanie's personal style.

Stephanie notes the two-way fireplace between the dining and living rooms was a major draw to this house plan. For the holidays, she used fresh garland on the mantels and throughout other rooms to bring the feel of the outdoors inside. “I wanted to keep it simple and minimal,” Stephanie says. “And since we have kids, I want it to be pretty, but I also want them to be comfortable here.”

The home’s neutral and woodsy palette continues into the master bedroom, where abundant windows let in natural light and give the Smiths a view of the wooded property beyond. The bedding skirt is another cherished piece from Stephanie’s grandmother, and the prints hanging next to the sliding barn door were a Mother’s Day gift from Zack. In the master bath, Sherwin-Williams’ “Hunt Club” adds interest to the vanity’s Shaker-style cabinetry. “I also did a floor-to-ceiling shower curtain in here to add a little texture and soften the design against all the white and the tile,” Stephanie says.

Inspired by her love of traditional design, Searcy designer Amy Williams creates a classic Southern home— complete with Christmas décor— for her family

Amy Williams. “I’ve always been interested in classic homes and interiors. In college, I even considered majoring in interior design,” she says. Ultimately, she chose to pursue a degree in elementary education and spent a number of years teaching first grade before staying home with her own children, Grace and Jack. However, her interest in design never left her as she continued to decorate and remodel the family’s homes. “As our kids grew older we decided we needed to move to a home that better fit our family’s needs,” Amy says. After weighing their options, she and her husband, Buddy, decided to build in a nearby neighborhood in Searcy. an appeal for

DRESSED TO DINE
As is the case with many homes, Amy says her dining room gets the most use during the holiday season. “I wanted the table to be accessible, so having a small centerpiece was key,” she says of the mix of greenery, magnolia leaves, and berries tucked inside a ginger jar. The pairing of blue and white with a festive red-and-green plaid speaks to the home’s holiday color scheme.
During the build, Amy’s love of design was rekindled even more so, and those around her took note. “When we were working on our home, the contractor’s wife liked what I had done and said, I’ll pay you if you’ll help me,” Amy recalls. From there, Amy Williams Design took off and has continued to grow over the past six years. “I have always loved a traditional, family friendly, Southern home,” Amy says of the elements that stand out throughout her house. She points to details such as the tongue-andgroove ceiling treatment in the mudroom, the walnut countertop in the kitchen and coordinating cabinetry in the master bath, the use of lanterns throughout the home, and a neutral color scheme that is accented with a range of blues. “There’s a soft blue gray that runs throughout the house and adds life to the design,” she says. “When we painted the walls,

my painter laughed and said, You like ‘no color’ color, because of all the neutrals I chose,” Amy relays. “But I wanted the bones of the house to be good, classic elements that I could punch up with color; I didn’t want anything to feel dated.” The same goes for the home’s holiday décor. Since moving in, Amy has called on the talents of Tanarah Haynie of Little Rock’s Tanarah Luxe Floral to help her decorate for the season. “Floral design is not my expertise, so I was happy to have them onboard to help execute the vision,” Amy says. Using the home’s palette and the family’s beloved ornaments and stockings, Tanarah and her team accented the spaces with a light layer of holiday wreaths, garland, and greenery. “I wanted the Christmas décor to have a very Southern, Low Country feel,” Amy adds, “which I think complements our house beautifully.”

COOKING UP A CLASSIC
“I chose the color for the kitchen cabinetry and walls (Benjamin Moore’s ‘Halo’) because it moves with the light,” Amy says. “Even six years after building, when I walk into this room I think, Man, I like that color.” The lanterns were a favorite piece she had selected before beginning the home. “I love the charm they bring and used lantern-style lights in several other places in the design,” Amy says. Blue and white ginger jars with greenery and tulips give the room a light dusting of Christmas décor and help carry the theme throughout the house.

Amy notes she’s not a fan of completely open floor plans, but rather prefers a home with a natural flow. Case in point, you can see a portion of the living room from the kitchen, but there are still walls to separate the two spaces. Features such as the use of marble (Calacatta Gold in the kitchen and Danby on the living room’s fireplace surround) make the rooms cohesive in the overall design scheme. The home’s blue accent color carries into the master bedroom in a lighter form. Here, Amy paired favorite timeless pieces, such as gourd lamps and block-print textiles, with practical design elements like the indoor/ outdoor dog-friendly rug and woven shades, which allow filtered light into the room. In the adjoining master bath, walnut cabinetry and a marble countertop echo the materials seen in the kitchen. Shapely mirrored medicine cabinets add style and function.

IN THE ZONE
During the build, the Williamses vacationed along Florida’s 30A and had the chance to visit a Coastal Living Idea House designed by Erika Powell of Urban Grace Interiors. “That house had shiplap in the hall and inspired me to use it here,” Amy says of the mudroom and drop zone, which has access to a side stoop entry as well as the garage. Lockers for each family member offer a place to drop backpacks, purses, and outdoor gear.

However, she didn’t sacrifice style in the name of comfort. “The architecture and style of this house really called for a lot of custom pieces. We wanted it to look pretty, but everything is also kid-friendly,” the designer says. For example, Tami mixed modern and vintage pieces in the couple’s daughter’s bedroom and paired polished fixtures and original art with durable upholstered pieces in the living spaces. Additionally, she complemented the everyday décor with an understated dusting of holiday accents. Amaryllises, berries, and greenery lightly dot the home, giving a warm Christmas feel without taking the focus away from the original design.

LET’S GET COZY
Using the homeowners’ directive for a casual and livable home, Tami created a living room with plenty of space and furniture for the family of five to relax by the fire or curl up on the sofa for a movie. The leather and acrylic coffee table is a durable, child-friendly option that can stand up to day-to-day wear and tear. “You can really sit back on the sofa and kick your feet up on the coffee table,” Tami says, noting nothing is off-limits or in need of extra care. Simple additions, such as the bowl of ornaments and a pair of amaryllises, bring a hint of holiday to the space.

O CHRISTMAS TREE!
Elf on the Shelf is a favorite holiday tradition for the family, so it was no surprise to Tami to find two of the characters hiding out in the home’s tree. “The family likes bright colors for Christmas, so I pulled the palette for the tree from the home’s more vivid hues,” Tami says. Under the tree, casual kraft paper and satin bows cover gift boxes.

ONE BIG HAPPY SPACE
A 20-foot island with seating for six takes center stage in the neutral-hued kitchen. The lightly stained maple island has a gray overlay that coordinates with the other cabinetry and backsplash as well as the Taj Mahal quartzite countertops. Brass finishes on the hardware and interior of the pendants add polish. “They use the kitchen every day; it’s not just for show,” Tami says. “They’re very healthy eaters and do a ton of meal planning and prep here, so it’s a great space for them to all be together,” she adds.

Color makes a slightly more subtle appearance in the master suite thanks to a range of purple hues. “I think this color is so peaceful and calming, and we really wanted this space to be a retreat for the couple,” Tami says. Still speaking to the owners’ desire for the home to be comfortable yet chic, Tami created a lounge area in the bedroom where the pair can watch TV and catch up after a busy day while bringing sophistication through the lighting, hardware, and even the marble flooring seen in the bath. The wallpaper is “Gigi” from the Harlequin Purity Collection.

The couple’s daughter’s bedroom is a prime example of Tami’s penchant for mixing new and old. Here, a pair of antique French twin beds and an aluminum Christmas tree blend with more modern lighting and bedding. “I wanted this room to be monochromatic with lots of pink and just a touch of ivory,” Tami says. The effect is a calming yet colorful space for the young girl.
In the mudroom, a locker for each child helps keep the family organized while a bench offers a comfortable spot to slip on shoes.
