local love I’ve never been a big fan of online shopping. As a tactile person and an experience seeker, I enjoy walking through a store to pick up and touch the things I might buy. Even for groceries and toiletries I prefer to skip online delivery, since I just know there’s something I’ll forget if I’m not physically in the aisle to tick it off my list. Photograph by Rett Peek Of course, I’ve had to change my ways since March; no one wants me idly wandering their stores in a pandemic, after all. Online shopping has been the way to go for new clothes (mostly lounge wear!) and birthday gifts, though I’ve tried hard to steer myself toward the websites of those local stores I love who are missing foot traffic most. These are the places that make my neighborhood so interesting and my hometown feel vibrant. When loved ones visit Arkansas and ask for recommendations, I don’t send them somewhere they could find in Mississippi or Texas—I send them to the places that make us unique. A family friend posted on social media recently that he aims to do all of his holiday shopping locally this year, and I plan to follow his lead. I encourage you to do the same. To get you started, we have 24 local businesses represented in our annual Holiday Gift Guide (page 63), many of whom sell online or can offer curbside delivery. As you gather around your tree to open presents this Christmas, it will feel good knowing your thoughtful shopping turned out to be a gift to more than the person untying the bow. Happy holidays,

What’s New? FRECKLED HEN HOME FAYETTEVILLE
This fall, Natalie and Luke Freeman announced their boutique general store, Freckled Hen Farmhouse, will be expanding into a second location with a focus on home goods. This sister branch, Freckled Hen Home, will be located at 1904 N. College Ave., which Fayetteville locals will recognize as the previous home of Weathered Goods. “Freckled Hen has always offered homewares, including cozy pillows, throw blankets, rugs, vases, candles, and more,” Natalie says. “Now with the opportunity to grow our square footage, we can offer an even larger selection of what our customers already love.” Additionally, the couple will operate the residence behind the new location as a nightly rental known as Freckled Hen Cottage. The cottage will be “shoppable,” so everything from the coffee mugs to throw pillows guests use while staying there can be purchased through Freckled Hen. “Since the beginning, we’ve had customers come from near and far to visit Freckled Hen and the amazing sights of Northwest Arkansas,” Natalie says. “We’re thrilled to now offer a space for them to rest and retreat from the hustle and bustle of life.” Bookings for Freckled Hen Cottage start December 1, and Freckled Hen Home is set to open in March 2021. Interiors, floral, and event designer Laurie Miller has launched an online store for her brand, The Velvet Boxwood. She cites the song “Home For Photo courtesy of The Velvet Boxwood the Holidays” as the line’s inspiration. “That song is one of my favorite Christmas songs without a doubt, and I truly feel it captures the reason I wanted to show Christmas through the eyes of The Velvet Boxwood,” Laurie says. When K athryn LeMaster started working with M arnie and Dennis Wightman on their home remodel, her challenge was in helping them achieve the ease of use they desired while still giving the home elements of interest and a “modern edge.” “They had a good idea of what they wanted for the layout, and they had already worked with the architects on opening it up,” Kathryn says. “When I came on board, it was all about choosing finishes and making it feel like all three rooms—the kitchen and nearby dining and living rooms— could flow from one to the next.” First, all the appliances needed to be resituated for accessibility and flow. “The two points with the highest traffic, the stove and sink, were back to back; from a functional
standpoint, it made sense to separate those,” Kathryn says. Additionally, relocating the refrigerator to a section of the wall separating the now-open kitchen from the living space created clean sight lines into the adjoining breakfast nook. In keeping with the desire for simple, transitional style, Kathryn worked with the Wightmans to select finishes for the kitchen that would be seamless with the rest of the design, from the blue on the kitchen island to the mixed metals in the fixtures and hardware. “Brass is one of the common denominators found in the light fixtures throughout,” Kathryn says. “And, the cabinet hardware is nickel to reference the appliances. The way we mixed metals was intentional so it would look tasteful and sleek.”

For the backsplash, the designer and homeowners landed on an elongated subway tile with a hand-finished look and laid it in a herringbone pattern. “All of these details keep it simple while adding some fun surprises,” Kathryn says. The custom bar cabinet makes functional use of the space to the right of the refrigerator while adding warmth and interest.

Conway’s historic district as well as a new wholesale company, Porch View, Charlie Groppetti and Todd Smith have become known in the Natural State and beyond for their inviting, down-toearth décor. And, the holiday scene at their Vilonia farmhouse is no exception. “We keep it casual with the focus on the warmth of the holidays. There’s lots of great food, good company, and plenty of seasonal flowers and foliage,” Charlie says. They particularly enjoy hosting guests on the screened porch, which serves as a passage to connect their farm to the home’s interiors, and, more specifically, the kitchen. Cranberry Spritzer Punch SHOP
1 liter cranberry juice 1 liter ginger ale fresh cranberries oranges, sliced ice rosemary, for garnish
PREPARE
Combine all ingredients, except ice, in a large punch bowl or drink dispenser. Serve over ice in glasses. Garnish with additional cranberries, orange slices, and rosemary, if desired.
RECIPE
Turkey and Swiss Puffed Pastry SHOP
8 slices shaved smoked turkey 4 slices Swiss cheese ¼ cup cranberry sauce ¼ cup mustard 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, unthawed
PREPARE
Preheat oven to 350°F. In a small bowl, combine the cranberry sauce and mustard. Spread evenly on one side of each puff pastry. Layer the meat and cheese between the sheets of pastry. Place on a baking sheet and cook approximately 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Cut into small slices to serve.

Create Your Own Garland To make your own version, you’ll need paddle wire, rustic wire, wire cutters, and a bevy of fresh greenery and accents. Canadian hemlock, eucalyptus, boxwood, Leyland cypress, rosemary, bay leaves, magnolia leaves, and lemon leaf salal are great green layers, while hydrangeas, rose hips, pomegranates, artichokes, tangerines, and pine cones are just a few ideas for accents. To create the base, cut a piece of rustic wire to your desired garland length. Create a loop on each end by bending the wire back on itself. Attach the paddle wire to the rustic wire by wrapping it around one end. Select a piece of greenery and use the paddle wire to secure it to the rustic wire. Do not cut the paddle wire, but continue wrapping it around your greenery pieces to secure them to the rustic wire until you complete the garland. When you complete the greenery layer, cut the paddle wire and begin to attach accents such as fruit and flowers with individual pieces of wire.

A Louis XVI bust sits atop the large-scale island. “He’s probably my ultimate favorite piece I’ve ever bought, and he travels all around the house,” Anna says of the resin statue, which is easier to relocate than it may appear.
Anna Dickinson likes to think outside the box. Having spent a number of years in the design industry, formerly as the owner of Little Rock home design store White Goat and now as owner and lead wedding designer and planner at Perception by Anna, she’s been exposed to a variety of styles. This continues to push her to go beyond the norm when it comes to her own home. After starting their family in a smaller house, she and her husband, Thomas, felt the need for more space, which prompted a move to a nearby neighborhood. “I walked into this house, and it had the aesthetic appeal I was looking for. I especially liked the wide plank floors, the beams, and these unique little latches on all of the doorknobs,” she says. Anna hired Katie Rees of Katie Grace Designs to help her “put the puzzle pieces together,” using her collection of vintage home goods along with a few new additions. “I can walk into a wedding venue or someone else’s home and tell you exactly where to put things because I’m not personally attached to them; but it’s much different in your own home,” she says. The same goes for her Christmas décor, which was brought to life by Tanarah Luxe Floral. “Anna epitomizes the word whimsical, and at Christmas, with all of its magic, I can’t think of a better way to be,” owner Tanarah Haynie says. “I had never done pink before,” Anna says of the palette’s main hue, “but I found a pompom tassel that I thought was really fun. I took it to Tanarah and she said, I can do pink Christmas!” “I don’t want to walk in someone else’s home and see the same things as I have in mine. I love it when people ask, Where’d you get that?” she says.
KITCHEN CHARACTER
The Dickinsons were fortunate to purchase a home with a recently updated kitchen and, therefore, did little to the space outside of bringing in personal style through barstools, rugs, and accessories. Midcentury modern chairs and an upholstered bench pair with a vintage marble-top table to create a cozy breakfast nook (above). The artwork over the banquette was purchased at a fundraiser for juvenile diabetes and was a joint creation by a child involved with the organization and artist Eleanor Dickinson, who is also Anna’s sister-in-law.

Last year was the first time Anna and Thomas hosted his side of the family for their 30-year tradition of Christmas breakfast together. Anna purchased the marble table, which can seat 12, with this gathering in mind. She kept the original chandelier and paired it with contemporary wishbone chairs with fur seats to mix old with new. Pink chargers at each place setting and magnolia wreaths on the interior of the windows carry the holiday theme throughout the home.

“This is my room,” Anna says of the sitting room where the family tree is on display. “I love everything about this space, especially that so many of the pieces are vintage.” Case in point, the Queen Anne chairs, antique Oushak rug, and refurbished midcentury modern coffee table, all of which fit together in a seemingly effortless reflection of her personal style. Additionally, the monarch-style portraits and bull horn are both finds from one of Anna’s trips to the antique markets in Round Top, Texas.

Jonathan toasts the season.
An eye for design and a passion for creativity combine in Jonathan Stiers’s Rogers home Design is a way of life for Northwest Arkansas native Jonathan Stiers. Even before graduating from the University of Arkansas, he began working as a graphic designer with Walmart and has risen in rank, having the opportunity to change departments and focus over the course of two-plus decades with the company. Today, he works with their sister brand, Sam’s Club, as the senior creative director for their private label. However, he doesn’t check his ingenuity at the office door; it manifests itself at home. “I encourage people in creative roles to find a secondary outlet to help avoid burnout— something you can have 100 percent ownership and influence over,” Jonathan says. Taking his own advice, he started blogging about food and home interiors. “I love styling things and bringing a scene to life. It’s all about trying to create a moment you want to live in—much like my work,”
he says. “I also enjoy doing interior design in my home. In this realm, I don’t have to negotiate with anyone but myself.” Since purchasing a new-construction Craftsman home 13 years ago, Jonathan has put his spin on almost every square inch, in the form of a few full-scale renovations and with furnishings and accessories. During the holidays, he takes the same approach, blanketing the home in a palette of red that complements the everyday blue-and-white scheme. “People know that it’s Christmas at my house,” he says, pointing to the trees that can be seen from the front windows. “I like for my house to be rooted in the traditional themes of the season but still have a transitional feel overall,” he says, adding that he is drawn to Ralph Lauren’s timeless aesthetic and use of plaid. “It always feels fresh, even though it’s classic.”

When it comes to holiday decorating, Jonathan likes to start with his existing pieces as a base layer and then work in festive accessories such as the tartan table runner, greenery, and stag’s horn candelabras shown in the dining room (opposite). Nearby, a bar cart stocked with party favorites sits below a framed piece by artist Josh Young. “These portraits are the perfect encapsulation of taking something so traditional and adding a contemporary conversation starter,� Jonathan says.

“Symmetry is king in this room,” Jonathan says of the living room’s layout. Prior to last year, he had gone with one tree; however, after updating a few furniture pieces and their arrangement, he added a second to balance the décor. The room’s everyday blue-and-white palette is accented with red for the season while the zebra rug and mix of accent pillows speak to Jonathan’s love of layering to create a robust design.

A built-in banquette, pedestal table, and French bistro chairs comprise the breakfast nook. Jonathan saw the opportunity for a gallery of works on the adjacent blank wall. “I’m a sucker for a gallery wall, and I love a grid but I wanted organic, randomly placed pieces here,” he says. Using a combination of new and found art he also introduced a hint of yellow.

“The kitchen was brown-on-brown-on-brown before I remodeled it about five years ago,� Jonathan says. He removed some upper cabinetry to make way for open shelving and added a farmhouse sink that contrasts with the honed black granite countertops. Pomegranates and fresh greenery carry the holiday feel into the utilitarian space.

In 2015, Jonathan made the decision to gut the master bath in favor of a new design with a freestanding tub and steel-framed shower. “This room is like stepping into a glamorous black-and-white movie,” he says of the look, which was inspired by the framed photograph of Marilyn Monroe from a London gallery. “I love this picture of her because it’s not a cliché; it’s one I’d never seen before,” he says.

A Little Rock designer helps Mechan and Dr. Susanna Shermer meld their distinct styles in a cohesive, well-loved family home
Dr. Susanna Shermer has always had a knack for reviving homes in her favorite Little Rock neighborhoods, the Heights and Hillcrest. However, when she and wife Mechan first stepped foot in their current home, they had different thoughts about just how much renovation the place required. “When this house came on the market, Mechan was like, Oh, it’s perfect! We don’t have to do anything,” Susanna recalls. “And I was over here going, this has good bones, but we can change everything.” As soon as they moved in, Susanna got to work on the spaces she recognized as areas for improvement. “She’s touched every part of this home,” Mechan says of Susanna’s involvement in the process, which included painting all the walls, removing heavy draperies, and updating the kitchen with new countertops and a concrete finish on the brick pillars. “My preference is so neutral and light and airy, and everything was a lot darker when we moved in,” Susanna says. During this process, Susanna was taken by a piece of art she saw featured in an issue of At Home in Arkansas. She reached out to the artist, Northwest Arkansas painter Allison Hobbs, and commissioned something similar—a woman’s face in

abstract, which now hangs in the couple’s foyer. “Once we got that piece, we knew we had to make some changes,” Mechan says, noting that its modern nature didn’t mesh with the French country furnishings left over from their previous abode. “I would say that piece was probably the launching pad of us moving into a complete redo of our home.” While Susanna was comfortable picking out paint colors and kitchen finishes, she felt she needed the help of a professional to combine her love of simplicity with Mechan’s desire for a touch of eclecticism. She headed to one of her favorite design stores, Cobblestone & Vine, where Stuart Thalheimer Davis was working at the time. “I said, I would love to talk to one of your designers, and God gifted us Stuart,” Susanna laughs. “She’s so patient and sweet, and she took both of our visions and just made it happen.” “Since the home is so much about neutrals and textures, we really let the art be where color comes through,” Stuart says. She helped the Shermers find furniture, light fixtures, rugs, and accessories that drew from both the piece in the foyer and the bright abstract in the sunroom (also by Allison Hobbs) in subtle ways that carry throughout the design. “They had some of the most amazing pieces already, and it was really about merging their two styles together,” Stuart adds.

In the living room, Stuart helped the Shermers resituate the layout, allowing the mantel to become a focal point. In doing so, they moved the television to the wall opposite the fireplace and, in its place, installed floating shelves to display pottery collections and seasonal décor. “They also wanted it to feel like a place where their family of three could all be together, so we added swivel chairs to make it more open and relaxed,” Stuart says. Neutral stockings with colorful tassels reflect the home’s playful spirit.

In the kitchen, the couple had two brick pillars resurfaced with concrete, which gives the otherwise traditional room a more modern, industrial slant. They also updated the backsplash with a classic white subway tile, added a faux vent hood (the stove is a downdraft model), and replaced dark countertops with light Taj Mahal quartzite. Mechan collects handmade pottery and vintage crocks; glass-front cabinet doors and built-in island shelving provide opportunities to display her pieces.
Stuart balanced the farmhouse style of the breakfast table with chairs that have a midcentury vibe. The woven seats add another layer of texture to the design.

A pass-through space between the living room, screened-in porch, and kitchen presented a design challenge. “That was a tricky spot for them,” Stuart says. “They showed me an inspiration picture of this great window seat area, and this was the perfect place to add something like that.” As busy moms of 5-year-old Hudson, Susanna and Mechan also loved that this solution created storage for toys, craft supplies, and games in close proximity to so many of the home’s living spaces.

The Shermers also called on Stuart to help decorate their home for the holidays. “For Christmas, we wanted to bring in lots of greenery but keep it pretty loose and organic,” Stuart says. “Nothing’s too formal. That wouldn’t be fitting for the house, and that wouldn’t really be fitting for them.”
MOUNTAIN LIVING
One of the biggest changes the Shermers made to this house was the addition of a spacious screened-in porch complete with a stone fireplace, porch swing, and dining table. “Susanna’s grandparents on both sides of her family had screened-in porches, so every house she’s been in, that’s been important to have,” Mechan says. “We love the mountains, especially Aspen and Eureka Springs, and we wanted to incorporate a little of that feeling out here with the stone,” she adds.

INSPIRED BY TRAVEL
Both the master bedroom and bath contain subtle influences from another one of the Shermers’ favorite travel destinations: Seaside, Florida. “We’ve vacationed there every year since Hudson was a baby,” Susanna says. Their bed frame was inspired by one in the very first cottage they ever stayed at in Seaside. Stuart helped customize their bedding around an Aztec-inspired blanket, one of Mechan’s favorite motifs. In the bathroom, they maximized the small space by replacing a walk-in shower with a tub/shower combination and a pedestal sink with a more storage-friendly vanity. For the shower surround, Susanna worked with Kaufman By Design West to come up with something “white and beachy.” “That’s my little beach nook,” Susanna says. “I just wanted a piece of Seaside at home.”
