I’m a natural-born rule follower. Always have been. In fact, I like rules. I don’t mind asking for permission, find comfort in knowing and understanding limits, and err on the side of “because you’re just not supposed to do that.” But, dare I say, I have a wild side. Remember the race scene in the movie Grease? Just before Danny revs his engine at the start line, his competition says, “The rules are, there ain’t no rules.” I’ll spare you my uncanny ability to quote this movie verbatim, but the takeaway here is important. When it comes to décor, I believe the rules for your home are— there are none. It doesn’t take long to figure out that I love color. From my wardrobe to my home décor, it’s clear I embrace the color wheel and march to the beat of my own can of paint. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good neutral, but something about pulling off the bold and unexpected makes my rebel heart sing. In this issue, much to my delight, you will see color in all of its glory. As much as I love to salute my fellow color enthusiasts and risk-takers, this issue isn’t meant to leave you thinking your beige walls should be hot pink. It’s really about celebrating the elements of a home that make you say, “Wow! What a bright idea.” Maybe it’s clever cabinets that maximize storage, unique lighting, DIY art, or pieces that make your home guest-ready in a snap. Whatever it is, your home should be an expression of who you are and how you live. Take a cue from these homeowners and designers who achieved just that. I guess some rules really are meant to be broken.

Paint Trends

with Shayla CopaS

what color are you predicting will be hot this summer ? Behr’s Lemon Burst is a fresh, clean yellow that I believe will be quite popular this spring and summer. Cool tones of yellows are making their way back into the design scene. what is your favorite neutral at the moment ? We are partial to Sea Salt by Sherwin-Williams. It is a pale blue/green with a spa-like quality. I feel that blue/greens are definitely making a statement as “neutrals” this year. what is your favorite bold color this year ? It is hard to decide because I love all colors. However, I think bold greens are definitely going to remain strong throughout 2017 since “Greenery” was selected as the Pantone Institute’s Color of the Year. We like to use this hue as an accent inside bookshelves with white accessories. do you have a “go-to” color ? Yes, we tend to specify a color called Unbleached Muslin by Martin Senour frequently. We love this warm neutral because it tends to be a chameleon color. what is your favorite trim color ? We LOVE Greek Villa by Sherwin-Williams. It pairs nicely with warm or cool wall colors.

HER POINTERS FOR PICKING A PAINT

PHOTOGRAPHY: RETT PEEK

1. DON’T BE SCARED; IT’S ONLY PAINT! Go with your gut, if you know that a certain color brings you joy or relaxes you try it in your space. If you need to start slow, begin with an accent wall or a small powder bath. 2. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Look for pictures of rooms in your favorite color or find spaces that catch your eye. Go into your closet and look at your wardrobe; you can usually find that over time you pick the same color choices even in clothing. 3. REMEMBER THAT COLOR CAN BE INCORPORATED THROUGH MANY DIFFERENT AVENUES. Color doesn’t have to be on the walls to be dramatic. Using color in accessories, artwork, and even in rug selection can help the timid achieve the effects of rich, bold colors.

HER POINTERS FOR PICKING A PAINT

“Taking cues from Pantone’s Color of the Year, Greenery, I think greens will be a big trend.”

Trendsetting Pastel: DAIQUIRI ICE BY BENJAMIN MOORE

1. EXPLORE YOUR OWN HOME FOR COLOR INSPIRATION. Is there a color in a fabric, painting, or an object that you gravitate toward? This is a great way to learn what colors you are drawn to and can help to make the selection process a little easier. 2. GATHER MULTIPLE SAMPLE CARDS. I recommend going to at least two different paint stores to see the variety of color options available. 3. EXAMINE THE COLOR AGAINST THE ROOM’S OTHER ELEMENTS. Think about the “role” you want the paint color to take on in the space. Is it a backdrop to other items or will it be the “personality” of the room? 4. EMBRACE PASTELS. I’ve heard so many people say “that’s too light” and “the light” is the magic in a pastel!

HOW SHE DESCRIBES HER USE OF COLOR Clean, simple, and timeless

HER POINTERS FOR PICKING A PAINT

1. LOOK AT YOUR WHITE IN THE LIGHT. White paints reflect a lot of light so always look at your paint color in the true light of day. Be sure to watch out for undertones that can shift them to blue, gray, yellow, or even pink. 2. LAYER YOUR NEUTRALS. Mix in different textures and hues to create interest and give the space an up-todate look. You can do this with paint treatments, accessories, and fabrics. Use wood accent pieces to keep the space feeling airy rather than sterile. 3. CONSIDER THE OPTIONS NEUTRALS OFFER. We are drawn to neutrals because they are forever fabulous! You never have to worry about adding a color that will clash, which makes decorating with them pretty foolproof. Plus, your rooms suddenly feel more spacious and less heavy when you choose neutrals.

“I think blush is the new neutral.”

Life/Get to Know

YOU STARTED REGENEROUS DESIGNS IN 2013 WITH A MISSION TO MAKE THE WORLD A MORE SUSTAINABLY FASHIONABLE PLACE. IN A FEW WORDS, TELL US HOW YOU’RE WORKING TO ACHIEVE THIS VISION. I create sustainable, handmade, limited-edition accessories from scraps that are leftover from clothing production. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A VERY WORTHWHILE MISSION. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS IDEA? After graduating from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, I had a couple of jobs in the industry and got to see firsthand the amount of waste there was during clothing production. After cutting out patterns, the leftover fabric scraps are collected until they have enough to call the trash man to come and haul them away. They’re still perfectly good pieces of fabric, just too small to use to make clothing. Nobody wanted these pieces…except me. I realized I could use this excess material to make something useful instead of it becoming waste. THE NAME “REGENEROUS” CERTAINLY SEEMS TO FIT THIS IDEA. Yes, we were trying to think of something that represented upcycling, reusing, and regenerating with a conscious heart. My mom actually thought of the name. Someday, I hope to incorporate a more philanthropic aspect into the business as well to fully encompass the generous side. Until then, I try to help in smaller ways where I can. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE TYPES OF ACCESSORIES YOU MAKE WITH THESE SCRAPS. When designing, I always try to keep functionality, versatility, and uniqueness in mind. The “Big Braided Headbands” are my top seller because they comfortably stay on the head and can be worn in several ways for different looks year-round. The smaller version, the “Button Band,” is unique in that it is adjustable thanks to the buttons through the braid. This makes it ideal to fit any head size. Scarves are also popular during cooler seasons. These are more of a one-of-a-kind item because when working with remnants I get weird-shaped pieces, and it’s like a puzzle to get them to fit together. ARE THERE CERTAIN KINDS OF FABRIC YOU USE? WHERE DO YOU FIND THESE SCRAPS? Regenerous Designs uses excess high-end material that ranges from soft knits and silky chiffons to heavier upholstery fabrics. Fashion production houses provide the scraps to us. YOUR LOVE FOR FASHION AND YOUR SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES SEEM TO GO HAND-IN-HAND. DO YOU THINK YOUR PASSIONS FEED OFF OF ONE ANOTHER? I really feel that sustainability can change the fashion game if people try to be more mindful of how things are created and where their excess is going when they toss it out. Pretty much anything can be used for something else if you just get a little creative. I guess all I can say is, one man’s fabric excess is another designer’s fashion goldmine! If they don’t want to come up with another use for it, I will. I love how this practice really challenges my creativity. What’s in a cup of coffee? If you ask BLUE SAIL COFFEE, the answer is opportunity—in large numbers. “Coffee is a part of our everyday lives. And for some of us, it is definitely more than one cup a day,” Stormie Perry, Blue Sail Coffee’s Director of Marketing & Social Media, says. Blue Sail Coffee is a growing business offering ethically sourced, locally roasted coffee. “We believe that we can help change the community in a positive manner through our passion for the coffee culture,” Perry says. “We believe that coffee doesn’t just begin and end with the barista, but it begins with the coffee farmers in other nations.” With direct-trade partnerships in Burundi, Columbia, Ethiopia, and others, Blue Sail is committed to educating consumers, and, in turn, helping the economy of these nations and their farmers. Kyle Tabor, company owner and founder, opened the original downtown Conway location in 2014. With few start-up resources, guests fell in love with the cozy atmosphere for socializing and studying, and Blue Sail began to soar. Now, state of the art espresso machines, live music, local art, and more, can be found at their three locations: downtown Conway, midtown Conway, and downtown Little Rock. Blue Sail offers an alternative experience to the standard grab-and-go coffee shop. Adding to its uniqueness, Perry shares some fun facts: “We are the first coffee shop in Arkansas to pull espresso from a Slayer Espresso machine—one of the best on the market—and we offer a small discount for riding a bike,” she adds. Need a bite with your latte? Blue Sail Midtown at Donaghey Hall on the University of Central Arkansas campus serves made-from-scratch brunch with quality local products. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Not many restaurants can say they started in a parking lot. From humble beginnings in Blackwell, Arkansas, to becoming a legend in Russellville, a unique flavor put FAT DADDY’S BBQ on the map. Today, Conway patrons can experience the history and cuisine. “We wanted to be a part of Conway’s vibrant downtown and the growth that has been going on here,” manager Blake Shirron says. A fun atmosphere and good food, of course, make this a must-visit spot and you can guarantee you won’t leave hungry. Fat Daddy’s guests will also feel right at home with their unique hours of business. “We open the doors Monday thru Saturday at 10:30 am. We do not necessarily have a closing time. We let the customers decide what time we close. If we are busy, the doors will stay open.”

“OTIS” THE BEAR

“HANGING OUT” AT DONAGHEY HALL Located at the corner of Donaghey and Bruce on the University of Central Arkansas campus, Donaghey Hall—a multi-use space blending student living, dining, retail, and more—is visually appealing, convenient for students and locals, and a symbol of Conway’s growth. But perhaps the most eye-catching part of the building is its permanent resident: Otis the Bear. Scaling the walls of this hangout spot, Otis is made of stainless steel weighing approximately 2,000 pounds. When ideas for the structure first started to form, local art gallery, Art on the Green, was called on to scout out an artist. Sculptor and university professor, Bryan Massey, was selected to bring the bear—which is named Otis after his favorite character on The Andy Griffith Show—to life.

sophisticated David Kirkpatrick, owner of CABBAGE ROSE, and floral designer Felecia Pleis played off of this home’s blooming spring garden when filling the wrought iron baskets on the doors. “We wanted to keep it natural, and we really felt that this home’s entry doors lend themselves to this look,” Pleis says. The baskets, which mirror one another, are filled with parrot tulips, field tulips, English ivy, forsythia, dianthus, hanging amaranthus, ‘Monte Casino’ aster, and tweedia. Classic terracotta planters filled with seasonal plantings line the entrance and complement the door displays. Pleis notes that while this arrangement uses fresh flowers— perfect for an event or party— Cabbage Rose could also create the look with silks for a longer life. soft enchanting His own front porch was the starting point for ABOUT VASE owner Dale Wallace’s take on welcoming warmer weather. He wanted to play to the character of the French revival home where he and his husband Jim Gunnell live, while also reflecting their style preferences. “Jim likes color but I tend to gravitate toward neutrals,” Wallace says. “When decorating, I try to infuse both to show our personalities.” Having been in the floral design business for 23 years, Wallace admits that he loves having fresh flowers at home, especially on the porch where the pair spends most evenings when

weather permits. He foraged their yard for branches, berries, ferns, and other greenery, and then added roses and hydrangeas from his shop to soften the arrangements in the urns. He notes that changing out these garden-picked items—along with providing fresh water—can be a way to maintain the creations and increase their longevity. The wreath, which features more fresh-cut hydrangeas and roses, follows the lead of the containers, while moss topiaries and spheres complete the look. Northwest Arkansas’ PIGMINT floral design company is known for using large doses of color. Their sister shop, Garden Living Supply Co., which offers outdoor supplies and nursery items follows suit with out-of-the-box plantings. To accent the charming porch of this historic Fayetteville home, owner Chelsea Hermez and Garden Living manager Jeffrey Waggoner brought an array of vivid plantings. “This house has a lot of pastel features and a beautiful jade green floor, so we played that up. We also thought about the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday and incorporated a number of pink and purple blooms as a nod to moms,” Hermez says. The hanging grapevine wreath, a locally made choice, is filled with a few of PIGMINT’s signature cut flowers, including ‘Coral Charm’ peonies, parrot tulips, double tulips, and ‘Free Spirit’ and ‘Pink Floyd’ roses along with a variety of foliage. Wisteria vines anchor the large teal planters on either side of the door. The team opted for these over traditional evergreens to add visual interest. ‘Angel wing’ begonias, verbena, ‘Mona Lavender,’ bougainvillea, and artichokes—which Waggoner notes “have beautiful foliage” add to the vibrant creation. Several cut flowers were also placed in water picks to give additional blooms and color—an idea that can spruce up any planted container for an event. THE ART OF

HOME

AFTER YEARS OF LOOKING FOR A HOME THAT WAS A PERFECT FIT, THIS EMPTY-NEST COUPLE FOUND A LITTLE ROCK COTTAGE THAT SEEMED TO BE AN IDEAL CANVAS FOR THEIR BELOVED COLLECTIONS AND CREATIVE IDEAS S TO R Y: T I F FA N Y A D A M S P H OTO G R A P H Y: R E T T P E E K ST YLING: ANGEL A ALEX ANDER

I

I wanted something that would have projects for us because I love projects, and I wanted it to be our house—not a house that someone else had already put their style on,” homeowner Cindi Maddox says. After almost five years of searching, they found just the house. Located on her husband Randy’s “favorite street in the whole town,” the charming 1930s cottage seemed to need the Maddoxes as much as they needed it. Many of the spaces had features that were original to the home, which spoke to Cindi’s love of vintage and antique finds, while other areas—including the finished attic—made the home large enough to accommodate them as well as their three grown children who often visit. However, it was in need of a few updates. Cindi knew she would need the help of a designer to complete many of these “projects.” After a glowing recommendation from a friend (see our May 2015 “Heirloom Revival” story), Cindi enlisted the help of central Arkansas-based designer Kathryn LeMaster. Together the pair remodeled the kitchen, orchestrated a whole-home palette, and found space for many of the furnishings the couple wanted to bring from their considerably larger former home in Searcy. “I love color; I love eclectic; and I love my stuff. Kathyrn has done a really good job of keeping this house streamlined so it doesn’t feel cluttered. The things that are here are the things that really meant the most to us,” Cindi notes. Of course, Cindi and Kathryn, who both enjoy searching for the perfect piece whether new or old, couldn’t help but add a few finds along the way. Here’s how they made the house a cheerful, welcoming reflection of its inhabitants. May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 45

DISPLAY COLLECTIONS Cindi is an avid collector and loves to visit flea markets and antique malls to hunt for her next treasure. She proudly displays these pieces throughout her home. The kitchen is home to her huge collection of Blue Ridge Southern Pottery (her pattern is “Rutledge”) and Jadeite glassware as well as a variety of painted tin trays.

CREATE A CLEVER KITCHEN Every inch of the kitchen was put to good use. Rather than losing space in corners, drawers that are set at a 90-degree angle were installed. Compartment dividers ensure that everything has a place and won’t be lost in the deep recess. A space under the island houses food and water bowls for the Maddoxes’ dogs. The island’s cabinetry doors also conceal a mixer lift, which pulls out and rises for ease of use. 46 At Home in Arkansas | May 2017

SEAT YOURSELF “I wanted a banquette in my house,” Cindi notes. “In every house that we looked at, I asked if there was space for one—if they didn’t already have one.” Cindi found the marble-top table at Sweet Home / clement., and Kathryn designed the dimensions of the nook based on its placement. Even though white and light blue are predominant colors in the kitchen, the coral and yellow seen in the other ground-floor rooms are echoed in the space’s fabrics, lighting, and accessories.

LET THE SUN SHINE One of the things the Maddoxes loved about this home is the natural light that appears to flood each room. To keep the kitchen especially airy, they opted for simple Roman shades.

May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 47

THINK VERTICALLY Since this home was somewhat smaller than the Maddoxes’ previous residence, they had to be creative when it came to accommodating their must-have items. A small space off the front entrance is now a music room. Randy (who Cindi and Kathryn refer to as Handy Randy) added custom built-in shelving to house books as well as some of the family’s smaller musical instruments. His impressive electric guitar collection hangs along the wall and acts as art.

Kathryn took one of Cindi’s needlepoint creations and had it reworked into a new throw pillow that complements the home’s cheerful palette.

48 At Home in Arkansas | May 2017

COLOR YOUR WORLD The palette of coral, turquoise, and yellow, which greets guests when they walk through the front door, flows throughout the home. “It’s an open floor plan; even though it’s divided into rooms, you can see all the way through to other areas of the home,” LeMaster says. “We wanted you to be able to walk from room to room and see a common thread but for each room to still have an individuality or life of its own.”

“IT WAS A HAPPY MOMENT WHEN I FOUND THE DRAPERY FABRIC BECAUSE IT REALLY TIES EVERYTHING TOGETHER.” —Kathryn LeMaster May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 49

PLAY FAVORITES Bookshelves are most commonly where homeowners display beloved titles. The Maddoxes took this idea to new heights— literally. “A friend of mine saw a picture of this idea and sent it to me. She knew I would love it because I’m a bibliophile; I was a reading specialist in the Little Rock schools,” Cindi explains. She and the rest of Team Maddox (an endearing term they use for their immediate family) personalized the idea by choosing their favorite books— both current and ones from childhood—to put on display.

50 At Home in Arkansas | May 2017

MAKE GOOD USE OF SPACE The home has four bedrooms; however, the smallest one is currently used as an office. When all three of the Maddox children visit, the couple needed another bed to accommodate everyone. Additionally, the master bedroom was in need of more closet or storage space for Randy’s clothes. The solution? Kill two birds with one stone by building a functional daybed that has deep drawers underneath the bed to store socks, T-shirts, and pajamas. “This was the only floor space left, so we made it a super daybed that can do both those things,” Kathryn says. Drapery panels pull back to offer privacy for sleeping, while built-in shelving holds beloved books from the Maddox children’s collection. Design Resources Interior design Kathryn J. Donna H anna purchased her Fayetteville fixer upper eleven years ago, and has since transformed the home into a glamorous, timeless showcase of art and collections. With more than twenty years in the design business, Hanna’s passion for interiors comes from a very personal place. “I have always been interested in design. My father was a developer and builder in Northwest Arkansas, so I’ve always been around building and remodeling. I would help him pick out paint

A VAST COLLECTION OF ANTIQUES, MODERN ART, COLORFUL ACCESSORIES, AND WHIMSICAL LIGHTING COMBINE TO BRING THIS NORTHWEST ARKANSAS HOME TO LIFE

colors and finishes for his homes. One thing led to another, and people started calling me to help them with their projects. That was the start of my business, Donna Hanna Interiors,” Hanna says. Her popularity and eye for high-end quality also gained the attention of Northwest Arkansas home boutique Christopher Allen Décor, where she currently works as the store designer. Many pieces from the shop seem to reflect her style and have made their way into her house. Read on for ideas on how to bring her signature style into your own home. May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 53

DISPLAY YOUR ENTERTAINING ESSENTIALS “I love entertaining and having friends over for a glass of wine,” Hanna says. An antique beverage cart tucked in the corner of the dining room adds visual interest when not in use and can be easily accessed when Hanna hosts parties and get-togethers. “Pieces like this beverage cart also help to break up the newness of a space and venture out from the showroom look,” Hanna adds.

54 At Home in Arkansas | May 2017

KEEP IT CLEAN A colorful house doesn’t have to mean colorful walls. A neutral palette of creams and whites allows Hanna’s furniture and accessories to take center stage and creates a spacious, airy feeling. Vaulted ceilings create more visual space to make the home feel larger. A clean backdrop also allows for new pieces to be introduced into the design scheme with ease.

WHEN IN DOUBT, ADD AN ANTIQUE “I like a little contemporary mixed with one antique,” Hanna says. For example, her living room boasts a stately antique secretary paired with a set of animalprint chairs. Floral pillows add a pop of color and unexpected pattern. “I don’t like everything being brand new. To me, that doesn’t take a whole lot of creativity. I love finding an antique piece that‘s just right for the space, and then pairing it with contemporary accessories. That’s a perfect blend.” Her general rule of thumb: One antique in every room.

May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 55

ADD SOME JEWELRY “I like to be surrounded with beautiful things,” Hanna says. The chandeliers found throughout the home are a testament to that love. From turquoise Murano glass to a Niermann Weeks chandelier made from shards of feathered glass (shown here), Hanna has a strong affinity for beautiful lighting. “It’s like jewelry,” she says.

INCORPORATE TRENDS IN SMALL DOSES “People cannot afford trendy design,” Hanna says. Instead, she suggests bringing in new influences through pillows and accessories and keeping the bigger pieces neutral. Bright pink flowers on the mantel and side table, a yellow lamp, and blue pillows add interest in the family room without overcommitting to a color palette. “The color of the day might be green, so naturally you want to run out and paint your walls green. But in a year it could be blue. You don’t want to have to go back three to four years later and redo the house again. It’s not practical or affordable,” she says.

56 At Home in Arkansas | May 2017

GO FOR BIG IMPACT “I’m into bigger pieces and less tchotchke,” Hanna says. Case in point, the sizable mirror with Murano glass accents that hangs in the powder bath. A piece of this size and stature creates a focal point with little need for accessories.

May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 57

PLAY WITH PAPER

A smaller space, like a study or bathroom, offers a great opportunity to play with pattern or color. In her office, Hanna used a muted floral wallpaper to add personality. Layering textures, such as metallics, animal hides, glass, and satin finishes, create a luxurious setting for this quiet space.

58 At Home in Arkansas | May 2017

SHINE BRIGHT A mirrored bedside table, metallic lamp, oversized wall mirror, and Lucite bench lend interest and dimension in the master bedroom. Adding reflective surfaces to a space helps to create more light and the feeling of depth in a small room.

EMBRACE THE UNEXPECTED Spotted Thibaut wallpaper hangs above a traditional chair rail mixing fun with formality in the dramatic dining room. “Ray let me do whatever I wanted,” Amy says with a smile. A nine-foot wooden table on a large green rug anchors the space, while a chandelier and blue velvet draperies add interest and whimsy.

TURN FINDS INTO TREASURES Amidst a variety of standout pieces in the dining room, a flea market experiment hangs center stage. “I wanted to try paint dipping, but I wasn’t willing to test it on a thousand-dollar portrait. I tried the technique on this flea market piece and fell in love with it,” Amy says. She created the two-tone effect on the matador portrait by literally dipping the piece, frame and all, in bright coral paint.

A

A ndy Warhol once said, “Everything is beautiful. Pop is everything.” On a quiet street in Little Rock’s Heights neighborhood, this mantra rings loud and clear. Amy and Ray Peeples are lovers of fashion, art, and color. With Amy being a former art teacher and Ray’s personal interest in home design, the creative pair had a strong vision for what they wanted when construction began on their new home. “We didn’t have an architect.” Ray says of the process. “We had a draftsman. They would send us floor plans and we would mark them up and make changes. We did that five or six times before it felt right.” As the project continued, Amy and Ray realized they needed help honing in their ideas. “We were expecting our third child, living with my in-laws, and building a house,” Amy says. The couple called on friend and designer Sarah Finley of Finley Design Group to transform their newly constructed blank slate into a high-style eclectic showpiece that welcomes the unexpected and inspires the imagination. See how Amy and Ray worked with Finley to create a home that represents their vibrant personalities but is also usable and comfortable. May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 61

THINK USER-FRIENDLY Usability of the entire house was a priority for Amy and Ray. Upon entering the home, guests are immediately introduced to not only the vibrant color palette but also the couple’s fresh take on family living. The large foyer adds livable space and showcases abstract art, an heirloom piano, and a lime green desk with a fur-topped bench. “My daughter plays on this piano while my other daughter sits in here and colors. Every inch of this house gets used; every room is safe and kid-friendly; and no room is off limits,” Amy says.

“Anyone who would come in this house would say it looks like Amy and Ray. THAT WAS THE GOAL. I would never want my name attached to any one style. I appreciate them all. IF YOU DO IT WELL, EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL. You just have to do it well.”

MAKE SPACE FOR EVERYONE The home’s floor plan is designed to be conducive to both entertaining and everyday life. “We designed it so that we could have a lot of parties and events and give the feeling like you are in one room,” Amy says. “But, if you want to sit and talk elsewhere and still be in the mix, you can.” With a kitchen and large island facing the living room and separate rooms for the dining area, study, and foyer, the first floor is open but still has designated spaces. “With three kids, they can be anywhere downstairs and I know what they are doing and what they are into,” Amy adds. DON’T BE AFRAID TO CHANGE PLANS The pink chairs that belonged to Amy’s grandmother were originally going to be reupholstered with suit fabric to create a men’s study vibe. Instead, the team further celebrated the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine by keeping the pink covering and adding dainty pillows, a zebra rug, and pops of neon yellow accents. “I love this room. It’s my favorite. This room can be quiet, and I can sit in here and be on my computer and feel like I have my space.” Amy adds.

PLAY WITH HISTORY With many pieces passed down from family members, the home’s furniture tells stories of the past, while more recently acquired pieces offer insight into Amy’s eye for treasures. Upstairs in their oldest daughter’s room, twin beds handed down from Ray’s sister were repainted in glossy red to complement an antique desk, another piece from Amy’s grandmother that was updated with new hardware and gray paint. Family heirlooms add personality and history and evoke the lived-in feel the couple was aiming to bring into their modern home.

DON’T MISS THE DETAILS The adjoining bathroom is wallpapered in a playful pink that caps off this little girl’s suite and also ties back to the bedding, which features mixed patterns of gingham, paisley, and floral. From natural coral adorned with jewelry to bright teal knobs from Anthropologie on the cabinets, no detail was left untouched. “Most of time when people build a house, they don’t have time to take care of details. Because of our friendship—and because of Ray being so involved, as well—it took pressure off of the big decisions and allowed Amy the freedom to make it home,” Finley says.

FINISH STRONG “I think the painter thought we were insane,” Ray says of the bold paint finish in the study. Taking inspiration from an image Amy found of a redlacquered study, the bookshelves were coated floorto-ceiling in high-gloss “Dress Blues” by SherwinWilliams. “We told them we wanted it dark blue and shiny enough that you could see your reflection in it,” Ray laughs. Family treasures, books, and collectibles fill each shelf to add personalization. May 2017 | athomearkansas.com 65

CREATE A RETREAT (THAT’S JUST YOUR STYLE!) The master bedroom, tucked away at the end of the second story hall, has a serene, masculine quality in a lighter and more airy palette than the rest of the home. “This is mom’s space. My sanctuary space. White and quiet,” Amy says. Trophies from Africa hang above an upholstered bed full of luxurious pillows in soft fabrics and embroidered textures. A pair of Flemish wing chairs borders a ghost console table and abstract prints by Lindsey Meyer, while wood tones, natural hides, and fur add warmth to the cool color palette. “Amy and Ray have style. They want to live in style. They didn’t need a ton of help. It was so fun to not only be with friends but also work with someone willing to take risks, see the vision, and be part of the creative process,” Finley says.

QUICK TIPS FOR BUYING & SELLING A HOME

While there’s no way to list everything you must think about before buying or selling your home, we put together a quick list that will—hopefully—get you on the move

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU’RE BUYING

GET AN APPROVAL LETTER BEFORE YOU SHOP.

If you are taking out a mortgage on a home, getting a letter from a lender with a preapproved amount can help to speed the buying process when you do find a home you love.

4

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU’RE SELLING

DON’T DELAY THE HOUSE HUNT.

KEEP THE SEASON IN MIND.

The actual process of finding a home, putting in an offer, negotiations, and closing can take months. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll be enjoying your new space.

PRICE YOUR HOME COMPARABLY.

SHOP NEW CONSTRUCTION HOUSES.

Thanks to a variety of factors, including nice weather and the break in school sessions, peak buying season starts in April and tops out in June.

Look to your agent for advice on the best way to price your home. He or she will be aware of similar houses and recent purchase prices as well as market trends.

OFFER INCENTIVES.

Sometimes you have to go above and beyond. According to REALTOR® Magazine, 37 percent of all sellers in 2015 offered some type of bonus or concession to get buyers to purchase their properties.

LOOK YOUR BEST.

While you may not like the idea of judging a book by its cover, prospective buyers are scouring the internet and deciding whether or not they want to see your home based on the listing’s posted images. Make sure your rooms are tidy and that the camera gives a good view of the home’s space.

Remember that many neighborhoods and builders are building homes to sell. You may find a home you love and even be able to pick out finishes if you purchase before construction is complete.

GET MULTIPLE MORTGAGE QUOTES.

Shop around for the best rates and incentives at several institutions to ensure you receive the best available deal.

APRIL 2012

“When I think of our color issues, my mind immediately goes to Andrea Brooks’ home. Her pink living room was—and still is—a favorite. It has a decidedly feminine flair yet the antique furnishings and traditional rug make it feel warm, inviting, and collected over time—the kind of place where you would want to host a girls’ night or curl up on the sofa for a movie. ” —TIFFANY ADAMS, MANAGING EDITOR

“I remember getting this issue in the mail and LOVING all of the different color ideas! From tiny details to whole home ideas, it definitely inspired me to get out of my box and go bold.” —NORMA EDWARDS, ART DIRECTOR

Green has always been a favorite of mine, and the cabinet color was actually the first thing I picked out.

The rustic cottage’s space-maximizing design adds depth and interest, balancing colorful accents against a neutral backdrop for a unified, polished look. Nodding to the horses that reside on the Clarks’ ranch-style property, designer Joanna McCusker incorporated the family’s beloved equestrian memorabilia throughout the den for a personal touch that blends with the rest of the home.

—LYDIA JAMES

For Randy and Lydia James building houses is a way of life. For more than 26 years, the couple has been working together to craft homes for Arkansans, so when it came to creating their own dream residence they had a few ideas in mind.

Working in tandem, a homeoWner and designer create a cottage filled With colorful flourishes

APPROACH WITH PASSION “Because we’ve built so many homes we knew what we didn’t want—and we didn’t want it to be too formal,” says Lydia of her Little Rock home’s overarching design. From the start, the Jameses decided to consult with Miguel Newberg of M. N’Teriors, with whom they had worked on several other projects. Not only were they fond of working with Newberg, they knew she could help them with the design process. “Everything was a challenge for me,” Lydia says. “I do it for others all the time [in spec homes], but I struggled with my own home,” she admits.

RIGHT ON HUE One major choice that seemed to stand out from the start was the color for the kitchen cabinetry. “Green has always been a favorite of mine, and the cabinet color was actually the first thing I picked out,” Lydia says. The alluring emerald has a modern feel that is still very much grounded in traditional design. The color was inspired by the cabinetry in Cameron Diaz’s Manhattan apartment, which was designed by Kelly Wearstler. After seeing Diaz’s kitchen in Elle Décor, Lydia fell hard for the bold, statementmaking color and knew she wanted to use it in her own home. “Through the process, I actually started waffling on the color, and I may have changed my mind if Miguel hadn’t convinced me it was perfect,” Lydia says. Luckily, she stayed the course, and it is now one of the room’s most-loved features.

NothiNg briNgs frieNds together like a good design project. At least that’s the story of homeowner/designer duo Jamie Clark and Joanna McCusker, who quickly became gal pals over mood boards and countless cups of coffee. As the pair’s shared appreciation of french antiques and functional spaces surfaced, McCusker recalls how the design consultations turned into “fun, little lunches and dinners,” and the rest is history. it’s no coincidence that Clark and McCusker found common ground in the crosshairs of interior design and culinary arts. After all, dining and entertaining in comfort were Clark’s initial inspirations to redesign her once-cramped kitchen, den and pantry areas. throw in McCusker’s knack for mixing old and new, and you’ve got a recipe for colorful, chic perfection with a touch of vintage charm. When Clark found her small, but character-rich cottage no longer conducive to her family’s daily lifestyle, not to mention entertaining, she recruited kitchen
