My mother has always said that I was the child who could entertain herself. Whether it was playing with my dolls, coloring, or swinging in the backyard, I was perfectly content with alone time. As I’ve grown, it’s funny how I still find myself needing this time, especially when things get busy. For me personally, this has been, without a doubt, the busiest year I’ve yet to experience. Between a new career and a wedding, I feel like all I had to do was blink and June had arrived! And it’s not slowing down yet. This time of year is a busy period for most of the state as we all prepare for vacations, pool parties, summer sports, lake trips, and, all-in-all, some much-needed time spent outside. (At least before the Arkansas humidity kicks in, anyway.) What a treat it would be to turn in for the night in a calming master suite. Between luxurious linens, tranquil color palettes, and high-end finishes, the spa experience is closer to home than you might think. For this issue, we have gathered some of the most beautiful master retreats to prove just that. Whether it’s a house full of kids, a demanding schedule, or embracing the peace and quiet of empty nesting, there are plenty of reasons to spoil yourself with a dream master bedroom and bath. As we listened to the homeowners of our featured spaces, each having unique lifestyles and schedules, one thing rang clear: they were looking for a place to escape, relax, and enjoy some quite moments. As the calendars fill up and temperatures rise, I hope you, too, find time to stop and enjoy some time to yourself. It just may leave you thinking stay-cation instead of vacation.

YOU CREATE BATHTUBS—BEAUTIFUL, FULLY FUNCTIONAL BATHTUBS—FROM WOOD. HOW DOES THAT WORK? It’s a process. From start to finish, it takes about two months to build each one of these. I begin by gluing up a board and cutting a circle with a bandsaw. Once I get a rough form, I carve it down with all of the curves. And then, the magic happens with a fiberglass cloth. This is what makes the wood usable and able to hold water. It’s also the longest part of the process. You form the fiberglass cloth around the tub and then a clear epoxy goes on it. It’s a similar process to creating a yacht or a kayak. So you actually aren’t sitting on the wood, but rather on the epoxy. It gives strength and prevents the tub from leaking. THAT’S A PRETTY AMAZING PROCESS. WHAT FIRST GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO DO THIS? The first one I made was 13 years ago for a business competition called the Governor’s Cup [Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup]. A buddy of mine and I were going to make a canoe but I was building a house and needed a bathtub, so I said let’s try that and enter it into this competition. So we did, and we won the technology award. That tub is still in my old house today. That’s part of why we were confident in doing this venture—because we had an almost 14-year beta test to see how it would stand up, and it’s doing great. We bathed all our kids in it and really abused it, and it’s still in great shape. SO, YOU DIDN’T IMMEDIATELY START YOUR BUSINESS, WATERWOOD? That’s right. I wanted to see how they would stand the test of time, and had some other life experiences. My wife and children and I ended up moving to Russia and then eventually to Mongolia. That’s where I saw the opportunity to be planted and start the business. We are currently splitting our time between the Mongolia workshop and my wife’s family farm in Searcy, Arkansas, where I also have a workshop. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY FOR ARKANSANS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN SEEING OR PURCHASING A PIECE TO LEARN MORE? We have a model set up at PC Hardware in Little Rock. You can go to the showroom to see the tub and feel the finish, and then we can customize options. We are actually making a square one from walnut now for a customer that saw the one on display and wanted a more modern design. WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR RADAR? We are currently hoping to expand our reach here in the States. We are looking at showrooms in Aspen, Atlanta, and North Carolina. Many people tell us these tubs are a great fit for mountain homes, lodges, or lake houses, so we are trying to make that accessible. Rooftop venues have long been popular in cities such as Charleston and New York—places where space is often at a premium and must be maximized. However, while necessity may be touted as the mother of invention, it need not be present for one to enjoy the fruits of its labor. Space in Arkansas’ capital city runs rampant in comparison; however, the view is one that, in opinion, may only be fully appreciated from a perch. The owners of this Little Rock condo recognized this and decided to cultivate an exterior space that would allow them to enjoy the skyline, as well as each other’s company. With the help of three local experts, here’s how they created a rooftop oasis in the heart of downtown. THE GROUNDWORK While the pool was already in place, many of the space’s hardscape areas were in need of renovation. The homeowners called on outdoor living expert David Munsey III of Better Lawns & Gardens to update the pool’s coping and mastermind an intricate installation of pavers and artificial turf. “She wanted a checkerboard-like pattern with pavers and grass,” Munsey says of the homeowner’s vision. “It was a challenge to make this aesthetically pleasing and also functional. Our design now has the entire floor on a custom drain that keeps everything in tact and prevents water from accumulating,” he notes. “Water is a big concern when you’re designing a rooftop space and you need to make sure you can control it. We have the resources to do that and put those to use here.” In regard to the pool, the directive was to refresh the top surround to give it a sleek and clean look. The same Atlas Concord pavers used for the floor were employed along the sides of the pool for a streamlined feel. Tiles were cut at a radius along the entry steps to add flair. The repetition of this one material, along with the existing charcoal herringbone pattern seen on the base, allows the surroundings to become the focus. “It’s so important to consider the view when you’re working on a rooftop project. You really want to step back and see how everything looks in the environment,” Munsey adds. June 2017 | athomearkansas.com 33

THE FURNISHINGS Designer Tobi Fairley, who worked with the family on their home’s interiors, helped to make selections for the outdoor kitchen and furnishings. The kitchen features a grill, refrigerator and bar area, along with a workspace for prepping cocktails or dinner. “The furniture for the exterior is an extension of their chic and sophisticated style,” Fairley says. “The homeowner and I were both fans of the always classic Chinese Chippendale fretwork pattern on the seating, and the black-and-white-striped fabric is the perfect combination of bold and timeless; plus, it is a continuation of a striped floor pattern in the entry of the home. I always love bringing the indoors out so that the exterior space feels much like a real room inside the home,” she says.
THE PLANTINGS Chris Olsen of Botanica Gardens designed a variety of plantings to complement each of the aforementioned elements. Trellises, which were inspired by the fretwork on the furnishings, line the wall space, adding both dimension and texture. Both the iron trellises, which were made by Accent Iron in Benton, and the actual containers had to be able to travel via elevator to the rooftop—a consideration that both Olsen and Munsey had to take into account for all parts of the project. Thus, they were designed and built to travel to the penthouse and be assembled onsite. Heat and wind were top considerations for Olsen as he selected plantings. White Confederate jasmine, an evergreen with a sweet scent, climbs the trellises and will continue to offer color and cover the expanse of the structure in years to come. Wintergreen boxwoods and dwarf mondo grass fill the planters for what Olsen describes as a “clean and elegant” approach. At the pool’s edge, charcoal black planters hold succulents and blue scaevola, heat-tolerant options that will not drop into the pool. “There are really endless options to what we can do with these,” Olsen says of the containers. The same may also be said for the number of ways in which one can enjoy this refreshing oasis.

Chef Casey Copeland is carving a new path when it comes to dining in downtown Hot Springs. The Texas native is no stranger to the Arkansas food scene having served as executive chef at Little Rock’s SO and been named the winner of the 2015 Arkansas Hospitality Association’s Iron Chef competition, among other notable posts. Copeland feels as though he has found his niche in The Natural State, and now is hoping to make locally sourced cuisine a favorite for diners at The Avenue, his popular new restaurant located inside The Waters Hotel. “I want to bring a better dining scene to this area. I want to be able to use all the local farms we can and also grow produce onsite here for use,” Copeland says. “I’ve built some relationships with local farmers, and I have transitioned in my cooking. I use less seasoning and instead take these beautiful ingredients and highlight them with just a few notes.” The Avenue currently offers dinner service Wednesday through Saturday with a menu that changes every five to six weeks according to Copeland. “I love to have something new and I don’t let things get stagnant,” he says. Examples from their current offerings include grilled free-range chicken, Southern paella, and duck confit tacos as well as the filet and scallop recipes seen on the following pages. Each dish is served in a tapas or shareable-plate style, encouraging diners to linger, converse, and enjoy the experience. In mid-April, they also began hosting a Sunday brunch which Copeland says allows him to get back to his roots with favorites such as biscuits and gravy, breakfast tacos, and eggs benedict—all at $6-15 per plate. As for the aforementioned onsite garden, Copeland already hosts hives of bees on the rooftop, allowing him to produce his own honey and he has plans to install tower gardens that will also supply the restaurant. Equally exciting are the owners plans for a rooftop bar, which will allow guests to take in views of the spa city. “There was a rooftop bar near a place I worked in Austin and it was always the place to be,” Copeland says. “I want to be a part of bringing that here. I have some great ideas coming forward; I have a great staff and ownership behind me, and we’re excited about what’s happening here,” the chef says. COLD SMOKED FILET with Whipped Cauliflower, Red Pepper Coulis, Charred Onion Petals & Fried Leeks
Life/Flavor COLD SMOKED FILET
PREPARATION Start smoldering wood chips in a smoker grill without actually starting the fire. Place filets in the grill chamber away from any possible heat, but still allow the smoke to surround them for 3-5 minutes. Remove from grill. Allow the meat to rest in the refrigerator until you are ready to grill it. Grill on an open fire to desired level.
WHIPPED CAULIFLOWER
INGREDIENTS 3 cups cauliflower florets heavy cream (enough to cover cauliflower) ¾ tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon granulated garlic PREPARATION Cook all ingredients in a pot on medium heat until cauliflower is very tender. Transfer to a blender and puree. Place in a container in refrigerator to cool. You can spoon or pipe onto plate or into charred onions.
RED PEPPER COULIS
INGREDIENTS 5 red bell peppers; charred until black on all sides, and then deseeded 1 carton of chicken stock ½ teaspoon granulated garlic ½ teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon smoked paprika 1/8 teaspoon cayenne zest of one lemon PREPARATION Place prepared bell peppers in a large pot; cover with chicken stock and spices and bring to a boil until slightly reduced. Transfer to a blender and puree the bell pepper mixture until smooth. Add the lemon zest and pulse a couple times to finish.
CHARRED ONIONS INGREDIENTS 1 yellow or white onion olive oil salt pepper
PREPARATION Remove the skin of one yellow or white onion. Rub with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Cut in half and roast in oven at 350°F for 10 minutes. Remove and transfer to a smoking hot pan to char the flat sides and blacken the edges. Cut into strips to act as cups for the cauliflower whip on the plate. June 2017 | athomearkansas.com 39
Life/Flavor TRUFFLE POTATO COULIS INGREDIENTS 3 Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and diced heavy cream (enough to cover potatoes) 1 cup chicken stock ½ teaspoon truffle oil salt and pepper, to taste
SEA SCALLOPS with Truffle Potato Coulis, Spinach Oil, Roasted Purple Cauliflower and Black Pepper Tuile
PREPARATION Place potatoes in a small pot and cover with cream. Cook on medium heat until potatoes are very tender and soft. Transfer to a blender and add remaining ingredients. Puree until silky smooth.
SPINACH OIL INGREDIENTS 6 cups spinach 3 cups canola oil
1 teaspoon salt cheesecloth strainer or China cap
PREPARATION Blanch spinach in boiling water for 45 seconds. Remove and place in an ice water bath to shock, so the bright green color remains. Strain, making sure to remove all ice and water; use your hands to ring remaining water out of spinach. Place in blender with oil and salt. Puree until smooth. Place cheesecloth inside of a strainer, creating a lining through which the spinach oil will pass. Hold the lined strainer over a large bowl or container that can catch the oil, and begin to pour the puree through the strainer. Allow to drip until the beautiful green oil has finished running.
ROASTED PURPLE CAULIFLOWER INGREDIENTS cauliflower florets melted butter
salt pepper
PREPARATION Toss cauliflower florets in melted butter, salt, and pepper. Roast on a sheet pan in the oven at 350°F. When the cauliflower starts to get a little color, remove from the oven.
BLACK PEPPER TUILE INGREDIENTS ¾ cup sugar 3 egg whites ½ cup butter, melted and at room temperature
½ cup flour coarse ground black pepper, to taste
PREPARATION Mix all ingredients in bowl, and cool in fridge for two hours. Line a sheet tray with parchment paper. Spread a very thin and consistent layer of the mixture onto the tray. Sprinkle with black pepper. Cook in the oven at 375°F until golden brown. Let cool to room temperature, and then break into bitesize pieces.

SEA SCALLOPS
Note: These should be cooked last. INGREDIENTS sea scallops salt
pepper melted butter
PREPARATION Salt and pepper each side of the scallops. Place a non-stick skillet on medium-high heat until very hot, and then coat with melted butter. Sear both the top and bottom of the scallop, but do not flip until the first side has a nice brown crust. Place the scallops on a plate with the tuile, cauliflower, and coulis. Drizzle the spinach oil over the finished plate.

When you work in the healthcare field, your days can be filled with consultations and treatments, and your nights and weekends may include on-call shifts. With the workload and urgency of this profession, having a place to unwind is paramount when it comes to designing your home. A pair of doctors, who own this Fayetteville home, called on designer Melissa Haynes to create a serene master suite that would allow them to do just that. Here’s how she created a sanctuary the couple could enjoy at night or during the day.
Haynes notes that the cream, campaign-style desk is one of her favorite pieces in the room. Deeper blue hues are incorporated on the upholstery of the chair back and seat. Facing page: The fireplace was formerly covered with natural stone. Haynes centered it on the wall and refaced the surface with a marble surround for a sleek look. The pair of chairs, which previously featured a loud print, was recovered in a soft blue fabric.
LAY THE GROUNDWORK Of the two rooms, the bath was in need of the biggest overhaul when it came to construction; “there were some interesting window scenarios that we wanted to make work in our favor,” Haynes says. Most notably, there is a large transom over the vanity. The designer reconfigured the layout to center the vanity and mirror on the transom, allowing the homeowners to benefit from the natural light but not drawing one’s eye to the feature. Tall upper cabinets bookend the updated design. In the bedroom, plantation shutters were removed to allow for more natural light as well as a cleaner overall feel. The fireplace that sits opposite the bed was shifted to be centered on the wall, and its natural stone façade was traded for marble—a material that was in line with Haynes’ light and calm vision for the spaces. CHOOSE A HUE “She told me that she really wanted a place where they could rest and also for it to be a room where they would hang out,” Haynes says. To set the tone, the designer used Glidden’s “Westerly Wind” on the walls of the bedroom, a color she had chosen for use in their prior home. “The homeowner loved this color, and it made sense to use it here again,” the designer says. “It can be cool and clean, and it changes a lot based on the light and time of day.” Haynes also notes that it complements the view of the acreage where the house is situated. The wall color carries over into the bath at a lower saturation. Throughout the adjoining spaces, the hue is complemented by a range of blues that can be seen on upholstered pieces, throw pillows, draperies, and even on the bedside lamps. The effect is a design that doesn’t allow any one object to stand out too boldly but rather creates a sense of calm that fills the room. “We didn’t want it to be too busy with pattern, so we saturated the space with color variation,” Haynes notes. PLAY FAVORITES The wall color wasn’t the only thing that carried over from the couple’s previous home; many of the furniture pieces were brought from their former residence. “She had some great pieces—many from when we worked on the renovation of her other house—and we really wanted to use those. It just made sense,” Haynes says. However, the designer was not aiming for a repeat of the couple’s former bedroom. “From a room we put together in 2008, we took the classic furnishings and then made it more current, more fresh with acrylic pieces, reflective surfaces, and accessories,” she says. This blend of modern and traditional gives the room an edge that appears equal parts timeless and trendsetting—a look that is sure to be inviting and revitalizing for years to come. Even though the area is secluded, a shade over the tub lowers for additional privacy. ELIMINATE THE TELEVISION. This allows the space to be a safe haven from the world without outside distractions. INCORPORATE A VIEW. When possible, plan the design to take advantage of a scenic outlook.

“We bought this house because I wanted to live on this street; it’s full of kids,” says the owner of this West Little Rock home. “Two years ago, I was at a dinner party and met the couple who lives across the street. I told them, ‘Some day I’m going to live on that street.’ When they came over to see who bought this house I said, ‘See? I told you!’” she laughs. While she and her husband were fond of having a large space with a yard where their four boys could play (two currently live at home and two are away at college), they weren’t enamored with the inevitable projects the house presented—namely the work required to update the master bedroom and bath. Enter her longtime friend Ellen Yeary. “I have known Ellen since grade school, and we asked her to help with the house,” the homeowner says of the Little Rock architect. Yeary reworked the floor plan in the bath and recommended Brittany Nixon Brun of Brittany Nixon Creative to help with the interior design. “It made it so much easier because they [Yeary and Brun] frequently work together, and
Brittany gets the story that you give her. She understood that I wanted it to be peaceful,” the homeowner says. CLASSIC MEETS CALM Brun spent time with her client and began to learn her likes, dislikes, and perhaps most importantly, her needs. “You get to know someone and you understand the lifestyle of having boys, and you think immediately, ‘OK, you need a bedroom that is a retreat,’” the designer says. “I knew it needed to be feminine, but not too dainty. It’s got to be true to their personality and the style of the house.” A fabric swatch was the starting point for the design. “The fabric [Schumacher’s “Westbourne Grove” in Mineral] really jumpstarted the design in the bedroom,” Brun says. “It had just enough color and just enough of a traditional motif. The brown, cream, and tan kept it all toned down. Everything in this room is basically built on it.” Brun used Benjamin Moore’s “Quiet Moments” on the walls of the bedroom to complement the fabric. over to the bath where the designer went with “Healing Aloe” for the wall color. “This is a shade lighter and teeny bit more mint; it’s more of a sea salt color,” Brun notes. BELOVED PIECES The owners had a number of meaningful antiques and works of art that had been passed down to them—many of which are in vogue today. Brun found a way to use these pieces to create a personalized environment, thus bringing a sense of comfort and familiarity to the owners. Additionally, much of the furniture found in the bedroom was previously used in other rooms of their old house, including a pair of tapestry chairs that formerly held court in the living room and a buffet that was painted and repurposed for use as a media cabinet. The bed, custom bedding, lighting, and many of the accessories were new purchases that give the space a refreshing feel. VANITY FLAIR In regard to construction and redefinition, the biggest change came in the adjoining bath. Yeary updated the footprint of the space, taking it from a dated 1990s room (complete with maroon and hunter green finishes as well as carpet) to a functional, breathable bath. In a move that Brun refers to as “genius,” Yeary designated the existing bay window area (which had accommodated a large tub) as the new home for a his-and-her vanity. “When they decided they didn’t need a tub, it just made sense to put the vanity on this wall,” Yeary says. “I really love to put vanities on walls where there are windows. It gives you great natural light at the face.” Additionally, eliminating the tub from the room’s design allowed for a makeup vanity with space for a chair. The toilet, which previously sat across from the tub, is now concealed in a water closet near the master closet. Practical features, including comfort-height countertops and built-in hampers, make the bath function well, thus adding to its calm feel. A FAYETTEVILLE COUPLE GETS THEIR DREAM RETREAT THANKS TO THE GUIDANCE OF HARPER HOWEY INTERIORS

“Simple. Timeless. Clean. And a lot of light,” are the words Kimberly Harper of Harper Howey Interiors uses to describe this Fayetteville family’s home. As a friend and former neighbor of the homeowners, Harper led the design plans from the ground up. “I’ve been involved from the very beginning stages,” Harper says. A tranquil escape in the form of a master suite was a necessity on the couple’s list. “For two years, I had been going through pictures and gathering inspiration,” the homeowner says. Harper worked closely with the owners to see this vision come to life. The result of their labor is a fresh take on traditional style that features a light, airy color palette infused with modern art, finishes, and accessories. WORTH THE WAIT Knowing that their “forever home” was on the horizon, the homeowners looked forward to making their new house what they always wanted. “We lived in our previous house for over eight years. I knew ultimately we wanted to build, so we never changed anything there. It was outdated and we needed a fresh start,” the homeowner says. This disciplined process prompted the couple to create a hefty wish list for Harper and her team on their new build. “That’s been a lot of fun—staying patient in our other home even with stuff driving me crazy,” the homeowner laughs. “We didn’t want to invest in anything there knowing what was coming. the entire home, the master bedroom and bathroom beckon with luxury and sophistication. “I wanted something calming and, although it sounds cliché, I wanted the spa-like experience for our master suite,” the homeowner says. In the bedroom, the soft paint color and plush bedding create a relaxing palette of cool blues and neutrals, while stronger finishes, like a set of swinging wooden doors that lead to the bath, add a masculine touch to ground the space. Bold, abstract art above the dresser brings an unexpected pop of color. “Our previous home was very dark with not a lot of natural light,” the homeowner says. In contrast, large windows without panes bring light into their new master bedroom and also showcase the backyard’s expansive green space. The same effect is echoed in the adjoining bath where a picture window was placed over a freestanding soaking tub to provide light and a view. Sitting center stage, the tub is nestled into a built-in, arched nook set against a tiled wall. Mirroring vanities create a symmetrical design to draw the eye in to the focal point. Wooden doors leading to a water closet and dressing area tie in to the double doors that separate the space from the bedroom. “This home has very traditional bones. The pieces in the bathroom are traditional, but the hardware and finishes add some personality,” Harper says. These touches—like square brushed silver drawer pulls, gold faucets, a geode chandelier, and a geometric tile floor design—bridge the gap between traditional and modern. “I love traditional design,” says the homeowner. “You can see the English style throughout the home and the touches of Gothic architecture,” she continues. “But I wanted some fun, too.”

A calming master bedroom is a typical top-of-the-wish-list request when a family sets out to build a new home. However, creating a unique space can often pose a bit of a challenge for designers. When Katie Henry of Katie Grace Designs was called on to design a Fayetteville master bedroom, the homeowners knew she was sure to deliver something unexpected and delightful. “They wanted the room to be serene and elegant yet livable and durable for their family and young kids. I always like to create master bedrooms to feel like a ‘retreat’ for the homeowners,” Henry says. Read on to see how she used color, and perhaps a little bit of geometry, to create a tranquil space. LAYERS OF LUXURY A unique color palette of mint and blush lends a feminine yet organic flair in the spacious bedroom. “The colors we chose definitely create a calm, soothing, and romantic atmosphere for this couple,” Henry says. This combo can be seen vividly in the bedding accessories. A cream, tufted, upholstered bed serves a neutral backdrop for teal and mint pillows in varying patterns and textures. a blush throw pops against the crisp white duvet. “We used a neutral palette throughout this entire home but wanted to bring in pops of color through the artwork and accessories,” Henry says. PRECISELY POSITIONED The noticeably symmetrical design creates a formal, balanced feel in the master bedroom. His-and-her, matching chests serve as nightstands, while the table accessories—including stacked ball lamps, books, and floral arrangements—are also mirrored in placement. Complementary abstract paintings by artist Joanna Posey cap off each bedside vignette and tie together the soothing colors and calming nature of the room. “We worked with Joanna by sending her the fabrics and finishes we had picked, and she created the most beautiful finishing pieces of artwork to pull the entire room together,” Henry says. Opposite the bed, a reading nook is another balanced focal point, featuring club chairs, an upholstered ottoman, framed mirrors, and a dresser. The color palette is continued with pops of pink in throw pillows as well as another abstract painting in hazy blues and greens. Richard Harp jokes that the owners of this West Little Rock home selected him as their contractor because he was an Eagle Scout. “The lady of the house found out that I was an Eagle Scout. Much of their family have received this honor as well, and I really think that’s how we ended up working together,” laughs Harp. However the initial contractor selection was made, Harp earned merit when he and draftsman Jim Johnston were able to piece together the dream home this couple envisioned based on numerous magazine clippings, floor plans, and houses they had seen in person. “She wanted special spaces throughout the home, and the bath was one of those,” Harp notes. While working with Harp during the planning phase, the homeowner brought in designer Laurie McFarland to help achieve the look and feel she imagined for the interiors—namely the master bath.
SOPHISTICATED FEEL “She tends to like a more organic look, but she wanted the master bath to feel more polished than the rest of the home,” McFarland says. “This is the one place that is just for them, so we felt like we could do that in here.” To accomplish this, McFarland specified classic cabinetry and countertops along with polished nickel hardware that will not wane in style. Expansive beveled edge mirrors serve a functional purpose on both the his and her vanity areas, while also adding to the clean look. “We mounted the sconces on the mirror to play to the light and airy feel of the room,” McFarland notes. Attached to the woman’s vanity, a dressing table nook provides a comfortable spot for applying makeup and adds to the room’s sophistication. Additionally, a freestanding tub with a telephone-style fixture has a timeless appeal and is also the perfect spot to unwind at the end of a long day. DOWN-TO-EARTH DETAILS While the bath has an elegant look upon entry, there are several organic and personal touches that tie it to the rest of the home’s design—namely the wood-look tile flooring. “The rest of the home has a lot of natural elements and we chose to use this tile in the bath to carry that throughout the home,” McFarland notes. In the shower, the homeowners decided to forgo the bells and whistles they had in their previous home in favor of a more streamlined design. They also requested that the antique chair, seen near the back window, be incorporated in the design. McFarland had the family piece recovered in an inviting smoky gray velvet, which makes it a comfortable spot to lounge. Overall, the designer notes that having worked with these clients on a previous home helped her to gain perspective on their likes and dislikes, allowing them to truly customize the space to meet their needs as well as their style.

A freestanding rectangular tub from Waterworks and a Lowcountry Originals iron chandelier create an inviting setting in the renovated master bathroom. ETREATS to make sure each would stand up to frequent use and accommodate family and friends. In the living room, sofas are long enough to fit many guests, but streamlined so they don’t appear oversized. The adjacent dining room is narrow, so we custom made a long table that fits the space, yet can easily seat 10. We also added a zinc top to the table for durability. Side chairs are an easy-to-clean painted finish, and host and hostess dining chairs are upholstered in outdoor fabrics, as are many of the furnishings throughout both the main house and the guesthouse. My favorite is the faux ostrich fabric on the stools in the bar and kitchen—you can wipe it clean easily. On the screened porch, we used teak furnishings and ceramic garden stools to hold up to the elements. Sunbrella fabrics cover the cushions, and underfoot a striped all-weather rug reinforces the color palette. These spaces became so comfortable that the family spends as much time as possible here, even holidays.
