talk it out Tell me how many times you’ve heard this phrase: Communication is key. As a writer and editor, I feel this in my bones; words and stories are my currency. But even outside of my professional world, so much of my life revolves around good communication. I’m Photography by Rett Peek sure you can relate. Scheduling a visit from the plumber, sending out birthday cards, checking in on a new mother to make sure she’s adjusting well—these acts make up our day-to-day correspondence. While reading and writing the features in our New Construction Issue, I was struck by how essential good communication is in building a house. Homeowners described long conversations with architects, builders, and designers conveying exactly what they imagined their new house could be. I loved learning about the different ways homeowners approached this process, whether it was sharing thousands of inspiration images with their architect or sitting around the living room, ideas flying with gin and tonics in hand. Building a house is an intimate experience, and it must be a relief to be able to truly trust the people you’ve hired to guide you along the way. If you’re looking to build a house, remodel, or just make maintaining your space a little easier, we’ve included our first ever Best Home Pros list in this issue. We hope this special section can serve as a resource for your next home project, and that At Home continues to serve as your inspiration.

SUMMER DESIGN CAMPS STATEWIDE
Thanks to Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design and Alex Foundation, children around the state with an interest in design and architecture have opportunities for creative outlets in those areas over the summer. In June and July, Fay Jones School offers seven sessions of five-day camps in Fayetteville, Hot Springs, Wilson, Little Rock, El Dorado, and Bentonville (sessions in Fayetteville and Bentonville are already full, but you can apply for the wait list). Students in the Delta can find similar opportunities through Alex Foundation’s STE+AM Initiative, which offers students hands-on learning opportunities in architecture and design through sessions in McGehee and Lake Village, both in July. Alex Foundation is a nonprofit whose mission is to expose students to career possibilities in architecture and design with a special focus on children in the Delta. Alex Foundation is the winner of the American Institute of Architects’ 2019 Diversity Recognition Program. Learn more at fayjones.uark.edu and alex-foundation.org. Email info@alex-foundation.org to request an application for camps in the Delta.
TRITON STONE GROUP LITTLE ROCK
While Triton Stone Group, one of the largest importers of natural stone in the country, has had a distribution location in Little Rock for the past 12 years, the company opens its first Arkansas showroom at 10 Clearwater Drive on June 13. In addition to natural stone, the company supplies tile, faucets, tubs, and more, and will be expanding its product lineup this month. “With this showroom opening, we’ll be carrying a lot of new vendors, like Delta and California Faucets,” says general manager Jake McAllister. “We’re excited about this grand opening, which is open to the public. There will be food, a bounce house for kids, face painting, and representatives from all of our vendors,” Jake says, adding that he hopes people will take this opportunity to meet with vendor reps and become more familiar with the products. Find out more about Triton Stone Group at tritonstone.com.

OUTDOOR LIVING
Planning Your New Build Are you building a new home? Or dreaming of building a new home? It can be one the most fun experiences you have if you plan properly. Although the landscape and outdoor living spaces may be the last piece to the puzzle, it is never to early to start planning them. We encourage folks to involve their landscape and outdoor living professional from the beginning. Not only does this help to make sure your entire property flows as one unit from the front entry to the back patio, but it can also be of great help on the financial planning side of your project. We would love the opportunity to help you with your new project from design to implementation. Enjoy your summer in Arkansas!—David Munsey Better Lawns and Gardens | 501.454.9803 | betterlawnsar.com

BEFORE & AFTER
For Now & Later Designer Lori Carpenter reinvents her home’s master bath to last for years to come
BEFORE
After living in their Ash Flat home for the past 27 years, designer Lori Carpenter and her husband, Martin, were ready for a few updates—namely in the master bath. While they were planning, a foot surgery opened Lori’s eyes to numerous aspects of the space that might not work for the couple down the road. “I needed a bench in the shower to make it easier to use,” she says, “and we never used our Jacuzzi tub, because it’s difficult to get in and out.” She remedied this by removing the tub and using the space to install a large zero-threshold walk-in shower with a roomy bench and handheld shower fixture. The space where the shower was previously located became a water closet, and new counter-height cabinetry (rather than shorter versions that require stooping over to retrieve items), lighting, flooring, and accessories pulled the rest of the room together. “We gutted it and moved everything around to make it more functional for this stage of our lives,” Lori says. Along with function, the space also got a style upgrade. “I’m traditional, but I like the more dramatic side; I like a lot of black,” Lori says. To this point, the room’s standout features—the shower surround and a tall storage cabinet—are black while a mix of neutrals and metals add polish to freshen the design. “We love the space, and I think down the road we’ll be even happier that we did the renovation now,” Lori says.

ELEGANT GLOW
Lori had seeded glass sconces mounted on top of the wall mirrors to provide extra lighting for tasks such as shaving and applying makeup.
2
FUNCTIONAL STYLE
Lori notes the builtin bench, handheld shower wand, and grab bar are other age-in-place features that make the space functional for anyone.

MIXING IT UP
For the cabinetry hardware, Lori mixed metals and materials. She used Lucite and oil-rubbed-bronze pulls on her vanity and chose gold pulls for the black cabinetry.

PATTERN PLAY
Porcelain tiles laid in a herringbone pattern mimic the look of brick on the floor. “I used this in a client’s home, and absolutely loved it,” Lori says of the inspiration.
“I think about aging in place and how the renovation will benefit the client down the road in any remodel that I do.” —Lori Carpenter

ON THE GRID
“I went to the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Orlando a couple of years back and fell in love with a version of this shower. I knew I wanted to replicate it when we remodeled,” Lori says. The custom-made metal-and-glass structure features panes on the exterior only, allowing for easy cleaning on the inside. The graphic lines and dark black color play into her love of dramatic design, while neutral-hued, large-scale porcelain tile covers the interior walls for a clean yet warm feel.

When you first meet Kim Lane, there are a few things you’ll figure out right away. For starters, she loves her home—the city of Conway, her neighborhood surrounded by parks and trails, and the white brick house she shares with her husband, Aaron, and her stepson, Gabe. She’s also passionate about connecting with people, which she gets to do in her day-to-day role as CEO of The Conductor, an entrepreneur-focused program based at the University of Central Arkansas. So it goes without saying that she’s happiest when she gets to combine the two and spend long hours with loved ones at her home. Kim credits Mette, a family friend from Denmark, with introducing her to Danish culture and instilling in her a desire to place experiences over things. When Kim and her twin sister were babies, Mette was hired as the family’s au pair and lived with them while the twins and their older sister were young. “She had a huge impact on us,” Kim says. “Even after she no longer worked with my family, she would come to visit, and we’ve gone to visit her a number of times. My twin sister even lived in Denmark to au pair for Mette years later.” On one of those trips to Denmark, Kim and her twin took part in the country’s Sankt Hans, a celebration surrounding the summer solstice on June 21. “It’s the longest day of the year, so it doesn’t get dark until close to midnight there,” Kim says. “In the Danish tradition, you bring your picnic basket out to the beach, eat, make a fire, and just hang out.” To honor that tradition and the lifelong friend who introduced it to her, Kim and Aaron decided to translate the Danish tradition into a backyard party for their Arkansas friends and family.
LET THE TIME PASS
One of the places where Kim and Aaron like to spend the most time is on their back deck, which they built to serve as the dance floor at their wedding—also a farm-to-table dinner party in the backyard. “Another piece of Danish culture that we’re obsessed with is the concept of hygge, which is all about togetherness,” she says. “We’ve had many, many times where we’ve lit tall candles out here and talked until they’ve burned all the way down.”

EUROPEAN FEAST
When it came time to set the menu for this gathering, Kim reached out to WunderHaus, a Conway restaurant whose owners describe its fare as “farm-to-table European soul food.” She worked with Jacqueline Smith, who co-owns WunderHaus with her husband, brother, and sister-in-law, to develop a line-up that reflects the Danish reliance on seasonal and local availability. “We began with smørrebrød, the famed open-faced sandwiches that are ubiquitous in the Netherlands. We see variations on this dish in Czech, Norwegian, and Austrian cuisines,” Jacqueline says. “One of the wonderful things about relying on local, seasonal produce and focusing on broader European culinary traditions rather than regional cuisine, like Danish, is finding commonalities in these cooking traditions.”

CHEERS TO COMFORT
Kim took direction in the design of her living spaces from the Danish as well. “Their architecture is very simple, everything is white, and there’s a lot of indoor/outdoor spaces,” she says, adding that she also tries to follow their example of minimalism. To that end, she collects mismatched tables, chairs, and tabletop accessories from around the house to use at her gatherings, which keeps the atmosphere cozy and casual. “I basically designed the whole house with hosting people in mind,” she says.

LIGHT THE FIRE
“The iconic part of the midsummer party in Denmark is that everyone has huge bonfires,” Kim says. “The country has a really long coast, so when you look up and down the beach, you see bonfires all the way down.” Traditionally, groups cook snobrød, or twisted bread, on sticks over the open fire, much like Americans roast marshmallows for s’mores. While it was hard to replicate the beach in this Arkansas rendition, Aaron built a fire in the couple’s firepit and made dough so guests could experience this additional piece of the traditional celebration.
Since strawberries are a staple of summer in Denmark, WunderHaus prepared a layered cake with elderflower-soaked berries and Chantilly cream for dessert.

GREEN BUILDING
Taking the LEED A Little Rock couple creates the energy-efficient home of their dreams with the help of Herron Horton Architects and River Rock Builders
Ann and Rick Owen live in one of the most energy-efficient residences in the state, thanks in large part to the 42 solar panels on their roof.
WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK ST YLIST TIFFANY ADAMS
For Ann and Rick Owen, being environmentalists means always looking for ways to do more. Recycling and limiting waste are part of their everyday efforts, but recently they felt a growing desire to take a larger step—like building a more energy-efficient home. “We had done efficiency improvements, and those helped. But our former house was old, and it was hard to get good insulation,” Rick says, recalling finding much of the home’s insulation falling out under the house on one visit to the crawl space. “It was one of those things where if you lift the hood and see what’s underneath, it really had some issues,” Ann adds.

They started by researching solar panels as a solution for reduced energy consumption. Unfortunately, their chimney would be blocking some of the sunlight, so they considered reconfiguring the roof. One idea led to another, and the couple began to imagine all of the possibilities building fresh would present. They decided to tear down their former house—at one time a one-bedroom bungalow that had seen small renovations over the years—and build new. “We were so in love with what it could be, and we had fallen out of love with what it was,” Ann says of the house. To get started, Ann and Rick met with Jennifer Herron and Jeff Horton of Herron Horton Architects to talk design. “We wanted to get LEED certification and the highest level, Platinum, if possible, and they helped us think through those different aspects of the house,” Rick says, adding that the architects also encouraged the couple to be forward thinking in how they might use the home for decades to come. Deciding on a contractor was easy—everyone they talked to, including other builders, recommended Keith Wingfield with River Rock Builders, whose name has become synonymous with green design in Arkansas. In the end, the Owens surpassed their original intent for a sustainable home; not only is the home energy efficient, it’s energy independent, meaning it generates all the energy the homeowners need, plus a surplus—some of which is used to power their electric and hybrid cars, the rest of which goes back into the grid. The result is a structure the homeowners not only love to live in, but can be proud of as a model for others who might be interested in following a greener path.
COLOR AND LIGHT
When it came to the style of the home, the Owens were drawn to a contemporary farmhouse design that would be consistent with other homes in the neighborhood. “We wanted it to feel integrated, and we also wanted to send a message that you can build green and look a little more traditional,” Ann says. “I think a lot of times, people associate green building with stark modern, but green building can be in any design.”

1 RAINWATER SOLUTION
The home’s landscaping includes eight rain barrels that collect runoff from the roof. Even in a yard like this, which uses no fertilizer or chemicals, rainwater runoff can carry soil and other debris into the sewer system, which travels untreated into nearby streams. After rainfall, the Owens can attach a hose to the rain barrel’s spigot to water plants. 2 COUNTER CONSIDERATION

Vertrazzo countertops in the kitchen (seen here) and master bathroom are fabricated from pieces of post-consumer recycled glass. 3 MUSICAL INCLINATION
The Owens’ floor plan is open to accommodate large groups for house concerts, which the couple likes to host quarterly. “Some parts of the design, like the sliding doors out to the porch, were put in place with the idea that people could spill out here during performances and still see and hear the music,” Ann says, noting that they can fit more than 75 people in the space, compared to the 40 they could host in their old house. 4 ENVIRONMENTAL PIONEERS

The US Green Building Council developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification in the 1990s to recognize buildings with environmentally responsible methods of design, construction, operation, and management. Ann and Rick’s home was the very first single-family residential space to claim the LEED v4 Platinum certification in the state.

Points toward LEED certification are awarded based on decisions made during design and construction. Ann and Rick’s home scored 89, nine points more than the 80-point minimum required for Platinum certification. Below are some of the design elements that contributed to their high rating.
BUILDING MATERIALS The homeowners worked with their builder to use as many recycled materials in construction as possible. For example, bricks sourced through Antique Brick & Block had been salvaged from a historic hardware store in Prescott.
INSULATION
SandersSupply, Supply, Inc. Inc. Sanders Plumbing, Lighting & Hardware Showroom

As the Owens found with their previous home, insulation is one of the biggest contributors (or detractors) of energy efficiency. River Rock Builders used spray foam insulation in the home’s attic, walls, and crawl space.
SOLAR PANELS Forty-two solar panels are the biggest contributing factor in the home’s LEED certification.
LANDSCAPING The lack of lawn means less water usage, no chemicals, and no energy expended cutting grass.
DRIVEWAY A permeable driveway allows rainwater to seep into the water table rather than contributing to runoff.
REPURPOSED MATERIALS During demolition of their former house, the Owens donated or repurposed as much as possible. For example, Habitat for Humanity took the water heater, cabinets, and stairs to sell at its ReStore shops.

Rather than traditional grass, the pool is outlined with turf, a long-term, nomaintenance product that also looks inviting year-round.
When Brandy and R ichard H arp built their west Little Rock home , the backyard was a top priority. “We work hard but we want to play hard,” Brandy says. The couple, who have two young children, wanted to create an oasis where the kids could play together and friends would linger on weekends. The area was designed to allow the Harps a resort-worthy experience without leaving the backyard. “We don’t have to go back and forth to the main house,” Richard says. “We can grill, listen to music; I can even answer the doorbell from here thanks to technology.” Zones for dining, grilling, and lounging—along with the respite of an air-conditioned pool house on especially hot Arkansas afternoons— make the outdoor spaces ideal for a crowd of all ages. Plus, features such as a TV that folds out so guests can catch a Razorback game while floating on a raft and speakers that line the length of the pool add to the experience.
44 At Home in Arkansas | June 2019
As for the décor, a desire for a resort vibe as well as the main house’s color scheme were taken into account. “We told Tobi we wanted something fun, bright, and vibrant,” Brandy says, “and we didn’t want to hold her back on color.” Pops of chartreuse, which also appear in the family’s home, along with a range of blues reminiscent of water comprise the palette, showing up in artwork, accessories, and an array of upholstered seating options. “I wanted to make the outdoor area feel as residential as their home’s interior,” says Tobi, who also designed the interiors of the main house. “Life is so busy. Even though this family loves to travel, it was huge to be able to create a backyard escape that gives them the feeling of going away without ever leaving their home,” Tobi says. “And since everything we used is either vinyl, plastic, or indoor/outdoor friendly, it looks cute but there’s no worry. Everybody can relax.”
CLASSIC AND COOL
Upholstered pieces (seen under the covered porch) invite comfort and relaxation. Covered in indoor/ outdoor fabrics, they can stand up to wet swimsuits while still being soft enough for cozy nights by the fire. Outdoor curtains pull closed to block the sun on bright days or enclose the area on chilly nights. Below, an all-white dining set introduces a level of sophistication and style that Tobi says makes guests “feel like they’ve been transported to a favorite resort.”

A vinyl sofa and vinyl-coated fabric on the ottoman stand up to the wear and tear of summer gatherings and easily wipe clean.
ALL THE AMENITIES OF HOME
Save for an oven, the kitchen space has everything one could need for cooking quick meals or preparing side dishes to pair with grilled meats. Tobi employed an all-white color scheme to keep the design seamless from floor to ceiling. In the adjoining living room, a vinyl sleeper sofa allows the space to house guests for extended stays. An abstract Jane Booth painting plays off of the room’s palette.

WEST COAST VIBES
A hint of California flair comes in the form of a midcentury-inspired wood and lacquer media console. The fabric seen on the ottoman in the living space is echoed on the full bath’s wallpaper, and again lends whimsy to the design. Underfoot an indoor/outdoor rug softens the floor without being overly fussy. “We wanted style out here, but didn’t want anything to be too precious or for them to have to worry about upkeep,” Tobi says.

Diane I rby’s first home Twenty years ago she built a home on a peaceful property in Ferndale. After selling that house and temporarily relocating to a west Little Rock residence, she began to gather inspiration to build once again. At the same time she assembled a team to help, helmed by her daughter, artist Lori DeYmaz, her son-in-law, builder and president of Graham Smith Construction, Zack DeYmaz, and designer Sha Davari of Little Rock’s Art of Design. Each member of the group brought something different to the table: Lori, an artist’s eye; Zack, a contractor’s expertise; and Sha, the ability to mix styles and add personality. The trio sought to create a home where to build.
A SPIN ON TRADITIONAL
A piece of Lori’s artwork was the inspiration for the living room’s palette. “One day I popped over to Lori’s house and that piece was leaning against the wall,” Diane recalls. “She had just painted it, and I said Oh my gosh, I love that piece! Don’t do anything else to it; I want it just the way it is.” The rug and all of the upholstered pieces are new finds from Art of Design, while the mirrors and light fixture were pieces Diane fell in love with after seeing them in Sha’s room design for the Arkansas Symphony Designer House. Sha notes the pair of narrow coffee tables allows for a walkway and doesn’t overwhelm the room.
June 2019 | athomearkansas.com 49
FAMILY STYLE
An antique rug and a generous-sized table Diane had owned for more than 20 years were must-use pieces in the dining room. Sha paired them with comfortable upholstered chairs to soften the space and invite guests, including Diane’s six children, to linger during visits. Diane originally had a different fixture hanging over the table, “but I never felt like it was right,” she says. She spotted this one at Art of Design, and Sha agreed it was the perfect scale and blend of modern and traditional. Graphic black-and-white prints by Arkansas artist Michelle Moore echo the floral and branch motif on the chandelier.

CENTER OF IT ALL
The kitchen is a true hub of the home, with the living room, entry hall, outdoor area, bar, and music room all connecting to it. “Initially, the living room was more a part of this space,” Lori says. However, following one of the team’s nighttime drawing sessions, Lori had an epiphany to make it a point on a triangle, where multiple spaces would intersect. An accordion-style window opens to the back patio allowing conversation, food, and drink to flow freely between the two areas. Panels cover the appliances to provide the seamless look of cabinetry, while everything from pullouts for blenders and mixers to charging stations were incorporated into the cabinetry design.
Diane could entertain and host friends and family, including her six grown children. Lori, Zack, and Diane spent many nights sipping gin and tonics, sketching plans, erasing ideas, and then having revelations that led to the final floor plan. “When we started on the plans, we drew my back porch first. I love being outdoors, and growing up in South Mississippi, we were on the porch a lot,” Diane says. Aside from the porch, she knew she wanted a comfortable dining room to accommodate her large family, a kitchen with a place for everything (Diane even took her family-size cast-iron skillet to Duke Custom Cabinets to make sure there would be room for it in the cabinetry), a bath that felt like an escape
from the world, and a music room for one of her favorite pastimes. Construction began in 2018 and moved along as normal until Diane learned two of her sons were planning to come home for Christmas. “She came to me and said Zack, we gotta get this house finished! We did, and she moved in three weeks before Christmas,” he recalls. The plans and construction weren’t the only collaboration on the home. Diane and Lori worked closely with Sha to make the interiors comfortable and reflective of Diane’s personality. “I love antiques, but overall we wanted this house to be transitional,” Diane says. “I love the juxtaposition of old and new, and I like mixing it up and making it my own.”
June 2019 | athomearkansas.com 51
SERENE SANCTUARY
“I love to take baths,” Diane says. “It’s my sanctuary.” Soos Stained Glass created an eye-catching decorative window that adds style and provides privacy while also allowing light into the room. “My favorite thing about this room is how it’s symmetrical from the entrance,” Zack says. “The tub is dead center, and it’s the first thing you see when you walk in here. When the sconces are dimmed at night, it has a very cool ambience.”
52 At Home in Arkansas | June 2019
VANITY FLAIR
Lori used her talents as an artist to perfect the stain on the master bath’s cabinetry, spending countless hours creating custom blends to get the color they desired. “Lori is really good with colors, and my strong suit is more furniture placement, so I think we work well together because we don’t have the same strengths,” Diane says. Originally they had considered individual mirrors over the vanity sinks, but the placement did not feel right over Diane’s vanity, which has extended counterspace at the seating area. Sha and her team suggested using wall mirrors and taking them all the way to the ceiling to unify the spaces. A crystal chandelier speaks to the home’s mix of modern and traditional.
CHERISHED PIECES
“My daddy had lots of hobbies,” Diane says fondly. “He had three girls, and he made beds that were almost exactly the same for all three of us. It was a real labor of love for him, so it was important to me to use the one he made me here.” Other pieces, including the rug and artwork, are heirlooms handed down from Diane’s parents. A lumbar pillow in fabric made from Lori’s art along with custom bedding from Laura’s Draperies & Blinds soften the room.

GREAT ESCAPE
A fireplace and room for a crowd were top priorities in planning the home’s back porch. “It’s all about entertaining; I wanted it to feel very comfortable,” Diane says. Sha found outdoor furniture that complemented the home’s overall design. “Diane really likes all of the chairs in her house to swivel,” Sha says. “We joke that every chair in the house had to move; these chairs don’t swivel but they do rock,” she says. A dining table and outdoor kitchen area fill the opposite end of the porch, providing plenty of room for Diane and her guests to prepare meals and enjoy them in the peaceful setting.

THE ART OF
MODERN
Architect Burt Taggart, Jr., helps a family design and build their dream home
Lacquered cabinets, handcrafted in Italy by Cantoni, are the standout feature of the clean-lined kitchen. Red, an accent color seen throughout the home, makes an appearance amidst the backdrop of gray and white, bringing vitality and warmth to the room.

“This is a one-time thing, so we wanted to do it right,” Saima Majid says of the west Little Rock home she shares with her husband Majid Saleem and their three children. Influenced heavily by their extensive travel as well as their native Pakistan, the couple desired a contemporary home with efficient yet eye-catching features that could serve them for years to come. “When we thought about building our home, we knew we wanted an open, airy, and bright place where sunlight would pour through every window and where the outdoor space feels like an extension of the indoor,” she says. Enter architect Burt Taggart, Jr., who spent time— years, in fact—listening to Saima and Majid’s vision, interpreting it on paper, and seeing it through to move-in day. “We initially met with him on the site of one of his projects, and we immediately knew we were a match,” Saima recalls. “I bombarded him with pictures of things I like,” she laughs, disclosing that she probably sent him no less than a thousand inspiration images. “Saima poured her heart and soul into our house,” Majid says. “It was her vision, and she has worked really hard to pay attention to every single detail from the light fixtures and the door knobs to faucets, tiles, mirrors and even the color of the grout. She has great taste, and it is reflected through the house.”
While Saima and Majid wanted a modern house in every aspect, the lot on which they planned to build was located in a neighborhood of traditional-style homes. “I couldn’t make it too contemporary in context,” Burt says. “I honored the neighborhood’s roof pitches and forms— trying to mimic surrounding homes’ features with a totally different interpretation.” He also used the existing contours of the lot to screen the home as well as provide privacy for the owners. Burt goes on to explain the house is designed and constructed in such a way that it reveals more of itself and its modern personality the farther you go into it. Although much of the façade is concealed from the street, you get a better grasp of the home’s design as you enter the great room and see through to the backyard’s pool area. “When you open the front door, the house really just explodes, which is exactly what they wanted,” Burt says. “The procession is very purposeful.” While the homeowners selected all the materials and furnishings, Burt says they brought many things to him and did give him “veto power.” “I tried to create a neutral palette to enable them to add richness and detail,” he says. “In other words, I treated the interior as an art gallery so they could breathe life into it. I really love to be a party in creating an environment where clients find joy,” he says. June 2019 | athomearkansas.com 57
LINEAR AND LIVABLE
“I’m really so proud of our kitchen,” Saima says. “In the beginning, Burt joked with me and said, Are you really going to cook in here? And I do. I didn’t want just a showpiece; I wanted something we could use and enjoy.” An abundance of cabinetry as well as an adjoining pantry store small appliances and canisters to keep countertops free of clutter. Drawers, rather than traditional base cabinets, roll out to fully reveal organized spaces for everything from dishware to spices. A chic, unadorned vent functions effectively without drawing too much attention.

DINING SIMPLIFIED
A casual dining space opens to both the family room and kitchen, making it an ideal place for meals as well as homework and conversation. Wood-andleather chairs mix with a glass-top table for a simple yet sophisticated pairing. The exterior view takes the place of art on the walls.

ONE FOR ALL
“Our family room is really the focal point of the house,” Saima says of the space, which offers views from the front door through to the back outdoor area. Two sitting areas give the couple plenty of seating for entertaining, while a palette of neutrals with pops of red is cohesive with the home’s overall scheme. Saima notes Majid has an eye for lighting and picked many of the home’s fixtures, including the floating spheres seen here.

SPA SPACE
Influenced by aesthetics seen during their travels, Saima and Majid wanted the bath to have a spa-like feel. While luxurious features including heated floors and a spacious shower abound, the room still adheres to the home’s minimalist design. “Everything is sculptural in nature,” Burt says pointing to the sinks and low vanity that stand out against a large-scale tile wall.
PRIVATE RETREAT
The master bedroom and bath follow the clean, neutral palette of the rest of the home. “I didn’t want a huge master bedroom; it’s efficient and a place where we can relax,” Saima says. Sliding glass doors offer a view of the pool and access to the outdoor space. “If you plot a typical house on a lot, you’re always looking out to the view. Here, you look through glass walls—both interior and exterior— into your own home and life,” Burt says.

OUTDOOR ESCAPE
On the second floor, a playroom for the couple’s three children is cantilevered over the master bedroom, which Burt notes adds dimension without feeling contrived. He wanted the pool to feel like “a hole in the deck” in terms of design. Thus, its flat, streamlined surface blends seamlessly with the concrete surround, which was specially treated to mimic the look of the interior flooring. Saima saw a water feature similar to this one online and asked Burt to figure out the engineering to recreate it in their setting. “It’s very soothing, like a waterfall,” she says of the finished concept, “and the kids also love to play in it.”

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
The upstairs patio is a favorite place for Saima and Majid to unwind and drink tea. “I have very fond memories of evening tea with my parents. It’s always been a tradition in my family and that’s why I wanted to have that space where we can sit, relax, sip tea, and discuss our day,” Saima says. “We got an added bonus because the view from the patio is gorgeous and soothing at the same time because of the water feature in the pool.”
