force of nature Every year, our Summer Living issue tends to revolve around water. It’s a natural fit, given that so many people head to lake houses and pool parties when temperatures rise; even if you don’t go for a dip yourself, I bet you’ll admit that letting the time pass outside with the water in view is an ideal summer day. You can’t help but be Photography by Rett Peek in wonder of the world around us. It seemed especially unnatural, then, to witness water disrupt the lives of so many while we put together this issue. From the end of May through the early days of June, we watched as the Arkansas River rose higher and higher, flooding communities from Fort Smith through the Delta. Our neighbors lined their buildings with sandbags while we vacated the At Home in Arkansas offices and prepared for the worst. Here we were putting together an issue celebrating life on the water, while right outside our door, it felt like nature was turning on us. All in all, the At Home office was lucky; we stayed dry, unlike many homes and businesses close by, and we were far more fortunate than communities in the other parts of the state. As we continue to think about those affected and how we can help them recover (visit athomearkansas.com/flood for some ideas), we’re also reminded of the reason we’re drawn to nature in the first place: Its ability to inspire awe.

What’s New? SILKS A BLOOM LITTLE ROCK
JOON BRIDAL
Little Rock florist Silks A Bloom announced a new initiative to repurpose their floral centerpieces while giving back to the community. After weddings and special events, the floral team will take apart larger arrangements and reassemble them into smaller, household-size bouquets. These will be donated to an organization that might be able to benefit from the cheer fresh florals bring. “As it stands now, we would like to give the bride or event host a choice if there is a cause near and dear to them,” says Dale Adridge, owner of Silks A Bloom. So far, the 20th Century Lodge, Dorcas House, and Presbyterian Village Nursing Home have been recipients of the repurposed arrangements. “We know these arrangements won’t last a long time, but they are being given a second life, and it only takes a moment to make someone feel very special,” Dale says. To keep this initiative going, Silks A Bloom is seeking donations of small vases and vessels to be able to give away with the flowers. The company will hold a glass drive the second Tuesday of every month (this month, July 9) at their headquarters at 5507 Ranch Drive, Suite 2. silks-a-bloom.com
FAYETTEVILLE
Fayetteville bridal boutique Joon Bridal was born out of owner Beth Talebi’s desire to bring Arkansas brides more options for chic, unconventional wedding gowns. After opening and operating for a year on College Avenue, the shop announced its move to the Fayetteville Square into the space formerly occupied by Savoir Faire. “Although we didn’t intend to move into a new space so quickly, an opportunity arose that we couldn’t pass up,” Beth says. “It’s thrilling to know that Joon will be surrounded by the buzz of the Square, yet will continue to provide an intimate and exclusive experience for our brides.” Joon is open by appointment only at 1 E. Center St., Suite 170. joonbridal.com The “Golden” gown by Scout Bridal, available at Joon Bridal. Photo by Freckled Fox Photography.
PATTICAKES BAKERY CONWAY
PattiCakes Bakery, which has been open in Conway at 2106 Robinson Ave. since 2010, opens another bakery concept in the city’s downtown area this month. “My desire to open a second location in Conway is to bring scratch, European-style pastries to this area,” says owner Patti Stobaugh, who is also the proprietor of Stoby’s. The story of Patti’s bakery begins in 2006 when a small bakery was closing next to the Stoby’s in Russellville. Patti and her husband bought the location and opened PattiCakes.
In 2010, they opened a location in Conway and a year later, closed their doors in Russellville. “I grew up in a family of very good cooks and bakers,” Patti says. “Fortunately, I had a patient German grandmother who taught me much of what I know. I clearly remember in the fourth grade having a tea party for girlfriends and telling them, This is what I want to do when I grow up.” PattiCakes Downtown is located at 1137 Front St., next door to the Stoby’s offices. patticakesbakery.com Photo by Kayla Barker Fine Art Photography. Cuisine Art In Hot Springs Village, designer Sandy Sutton helps a couple revamp the hub of their lakefront home
BEFORE
WRITER & ST YLIST TIFFANY ADAMS PHOTOGR APHER RE T T PEEK
Jane and Tom Weiss’s kitchen makeover started with what they thought would be a simple stovetop switch. “From one little conversation, we ended up totally gutting the room and changing its style,” says designer Sandy Sutton of Sandy Sutton’s Design Center. Originally from Jonesboro but having lived all over the world, the Weisses settled in Hot Springs Village to enjoy the community, golf, and, of course, the lake. However, overly formal furnishings and rich colors were detracting from their view. “Everything was tired and faded, so they really wanted something that would allow them to breathe easier and not take away from the amazing view,” Sandy says. They also wanted it to be easy to maintain and welcoming for guests. “Since they
are on the water, they entertain all the time,” Sandy says. Turning the kitchen’s desk into a service bar created a space for them to set out appetizers and beverages, while new backless barstools provide kitchen seating for guests without obstructing views. Overall, an updated palette of white and gray with hints of blue points the focus to the water and the natural setting. “They are so much fun to work with, and they have an understanding of design and how they wanted the kitchen to function for them,” Sandy says. “Tom came to me one day at the end of the project and said I was like a tamed jalapeño: You give us all the fire and spice, but it’s very easy on us and on the eyes, he explained. I think that’s a true compliment,” Sandy says.

SINK WITH A VIEW
Outside the sink window, Jane and Tom have a view of their covered porch and boat dock as well as Lake Desoto beyond. Sandy updated the area by removing a dated window treatment, lightening the palette to a gray and white scheme, and installing new cabinetry as well as quartz countertops. Sconces on either side of the sink offer additional task lighting and bring flair to the space.

FUNCTIONAL FIXTURE
Sandy notes function was at the forefront of the faucet selection. “They often cook with large containers when entertaining, so the faucet needed to be tall to accommodate those. We also didn’t want it to get lost with the expanse of windows.”
2
PENDANT PANACHE
Seeded glass fixtures illuminate the working and eating areas of the irregularly shaped island. “These catch the eye but don’t stop the eye,” Sandy notes, “and they are low-maintenance.”

Polished nickel pulls are a streamlined finishing touch on the cabinetry that coordinates with the room’s palette. “I had been waiting for a place to use these,” Sandy says, “and they play well with this room’s architecture.”
4
BRILLIANT BACKSPLASH
A glass-and-stone backsplash tile brings personality to the bar. “We wanted something that wasn’t ho-hum,” Sandy says of the selection. “It’s a small space, and the colors really light up that area.”
Makeover Tip
During the renovation, the Weisses donated countless goods to the Hope Movement House in Hot Springs where they can be reused by those in need. Consider donating, selling, or repurposing anything not used in your remodel.

BEFORE OPEN BAR
A far wall that formerly housed a desk and concealed storage is now a workhorse of a different form, a bar and built-in buffet area for entertaining. Two base cabinets offer a place to stash larger serving pieces and small appliances, while glass-front upper cabinetry allows the Weisses to display crystal stemware and serving pieces. Jane often uses the counter to serve appetizers when hosting, and a built-in beverage fridge encourages guests to help themselves to drinks.

South Meets Beach Coastal inspiration and Southern flair come together in a patriotic lobster boil designed by Jessie Gillham of Festive Haus

LOBSTER CLASS
“Almost all of the guests said they had no idea how to eat a lobster,” Jessie says. She worked with Jessie Russell Fuchs to create a custom watercolor for the invitations and step-by-step cards (seen at left) that taught guests how to eat a lobster. “These were way more helpful than menu cards,” Jessie says with a laugh.
“In Arkansas and in the South in general, when we think of the Fourth of July, we think of barbecues and cookouts—and we all love that—but for this party I wanted to elevate it a little bit,” says event designer Jessie Gillham of Little Rock’s Festive Haus. Her inspiration? A coastal lobster boil with Southern influence and a patriotic palette. While fresh lobsters covered the seaside part of the celebration, Jessie partnered with Heritage Catering to create Southern-inspired side dishes that would pair well with the crustacean. She also incorporated a subtle red, white, and blue theme throughout the evening, starting with the invitations and carrying through to the linens. “There’s a patriotic spin on the party, but rather than using flags, we used the colors and did traditional bunting along the window boxes,” Jessie says.
28 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
While lobster and Champagne toasts may have an “elevated” connotation, Jessie’s goal was to make the party attainable and easy to pull together. “There’s a casual vibe that runs throughout the evening—and nothing is too overwhelming.” These qualities are key to Jessie’s approach to gatherings. “The whole goal of my business is to help people find the joy in entertaining,” she says. “It can still be easy, stressfree, and approachable.” She wants to help clients create the parties of their dreams—whether that’s finding and specifying invitations and decorations, or walking alongside a client from the concept to cleanup phases. However, as evident in this evening soirée, it’s the details she loves the most. “The special touches are so good, and they are some of the easiest to create,” she says.

For the dinner, Jessie used a wood-top table (rented from Victory and Co. Events). Seating all of the guests at one table and passing the food family style adds to the lowkey air of the evening and brings a sense of community and togetherness to the party. If you’re worried about protecting your table, put down newspaper that will also make for easy cleanup.

Front Porch Panache A west Little Rock couple transforms the faรงade of their home with help from landscape designer Chris H. Olsen

SIT A SPELL
Chairs made from repurposed wine barrels add a quirky, personalized touch to the front porch. Chris notes the porch is very private thanks to the numerous plantings. “You can sit on this porch and see your neighbors and talk with them but not feel like you’re on display,” he says. An orange and red bromeliad is potted with an arrowhead plant in the container atop the side table.
After building their home in the 1990s, the owners of this west Little Rock house were ready to update its exterior. Not only did they want to make it feel more current, they desired a place where they could sit on the front porch to visit with neighbors and enjoy the beauty of a flower garden. Designer Chris H. Olsen of Botanica Gardens had worked with them on the home’s landscape decades before, so it was a natural choice to call on him when it was time to make these updates. “Our goal was to give the exterior a cottage feel with lots of softness and texture,” Chris says. One way he
accomplished this was by bringing the garden all the way to the sidewalk with a pair of semi-circle beds, which he says makes the curb less abrupt. Alongside Chris, contractor Mary Jane Herr worked on the functionality of the space. The walkways were widened to be more inviting for guests and stone pillars and a gate became a part of the design. The house also gained a front porch, a feature Chris says it previously lacked. All of these elements combine to create a charming, cottagelike atmosphere. “You can create a courtyard without hiding your house. Here, it complements the home and gives people just a small glimpse inside,” Chris says.

WELL CONTAINED
Chris’s Jhemajang line offers pre-potted plants that can be transferred to a container of your choice. For example, this mix of winter-hardy succulents and tropicals was pre-planted in a hanging basket sold at his nursery and later transferred here. “It doesn’t get any easier than that,” he says.

GROWING UP
Chris added interest to the beds alongside the house with a container sitting atop a stone pillar. The focal point is a ‘Crimson Queen’ Japanese maple accented with ‘Bright Eye’ geraniums and a winter hardy carex grass. “All of this contrasts with the home’s neutral façade, and it looks like a living floral arrangement,” Chris says. Below, the bed is planted with knockout roses, boxwoods, and catmint, which gives the look of English lavender and is able to thrive in our climate.

BACKYARD LIVING
Points of Contrast Water and fire features play off high-style architecture and pool design to create a world-class retreat in Fayetteville

FOUR SEASONS
In designing this space, Casey and the homeowners were mindful of making it functional yearround, from cold winter nights to the hotter days of Arkansas summers. To this end, the fire feature serves a functional purpose—from its position next to the living area, it gives off enough heat to warm the space.
Sculptural white loungers on the wide steps descending into the pool offer a spot to cool off in the water.
The backyard of this new construction home in Fayetteville is a fusion of opposites. For example, sleek, clean lines in the hardscaping meet curves in the arched roof line over the grand foyer. White brick, concrete, and pavers are warmed up by a mix of woods throughout the backyard. And while the escape is undeniably stylish and current, it’s a place that offers comfort and community for the family of six and their friends who spend time here after school and during the summer months. Designer Casey Sarkin of Casey Sarkin Interior Design, who helped the owners of this house on both its exterior and interior, says it’s no coincidence people tend to gravitate to the back of the house. “The whole house was built around the pool area,” Casey says, noting that because of its ‘U’ shape, you can enter the
40 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
outdoor area from all five bedrooms, a pool room, and the open-concept living and kitchen area. For design inspiration, the homeowners shared with Casey pictures of places they’d seen and admired on their travels. “She knew she wanted fire, and we worked with Elite Pools of Little Rock on the pool and fire features,” Casey says. Fire plays a part in two areas of the layout: in bowls on pedestals near the deep end of the pool, and accenting one end of a reflecting pool seen through a window at the entrance of the house. “When you walk in the front door of the house and into the atrium, you see right through that window out into the pool,” Casey says. “We contemplated a spa there, and then a water garden, but decided to do this reflecting pool with bubblers and the fire. At night when you walk in and see it all lit up, it’s stunning.”
GRAND ENTRANCE
When guests come through the front door, they are greeted with the view of the reflecting pool and flames through large-scale windows, providing just the dramatic effect Casey envisioned for her clients. A channel of water connects the reflecting pool to the swimming pool so it can all operate on one system.
Casey kept the furnishings for this area clean and minimal with a palette of black, white, and wood tones. The curved backs of chairs from RH, Restoration Hardware play off abundant straight lines.

ELEMENTS COMBINED
Casey and the team from Grassroots Landscaping collaborated for the surface and landscaping design. For the pool surround, they installed a smooth pumice-finish concrete with grass joints, CLASSIC AND COOL Arborvitae as which complements the home’s contemporary architecture and graphic elements. Upholstered (seen under well as planters filled with Japanese maples and seasonal plantings bringpieces life to the hardscaping. the covered porch) invite comfort and relaxation. Covered in indoor/ outdoor fabrics, they can stand up to wet swimsuits while still being soft enough for cozy nights by the fire. Outdoor curtains pull closed to block the sun on bright days or enclose the area on chilly nights. Below, an all-white dining set introduces a level of sophistication and style that Tobi says makes guests “feel like they’ve been transported to a favorite resort.”

Home Away From Home Designer Shayla Copas brings the serenity of Greers Ferry Lake indoors in this classic and comfortable remodel
WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK
When Shayla Copas of Shayla Copas I nteriors first started talking with the owner of
about plans for a renovation, she soon discovered his children were the motivation for the project. “The husband spent a lot of time as a child in Heber Springs, and this was an area where he had great memories,” Shayla says. “He and his wife wanted to find a home on the lake where they could bring their kids and pass down those memories through the generations.” this home
46 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
PEACEFUL PALETTE
Since Shayla and her team opened up the layout of the home significantly, she kept the palette clean and cohesive with creamy neutrals and blues throughout. “The homeowners gravitate toward blues—any shade of blue,” Shayla says. “They also love neutrals, so the walls are a very light taupe, and the blues kind of pop off of that color. I suggested we paint the island and the cabinets in the butler’s pantry blue to add some areas of interest.”
July 2019 | athomearkansas.com 47
NATURAL FEEL
Throughout the home, Shayla chose details that would hint at Mother Nature’s presence right outside the windows. Case in point: The branch motif in the kitchen barstools. “Because this is a lake house, I wanted to put in some furnishings that had an organic feel,” Shayla says. Additionally, the pendants above the kitchen island are reminiscent of nautical lanterns and artwork depicting beach landscapes and waves are prevalent.
Turns out finding a house would be the easy part; the work would come in making it their own. They settled on the first house they looked at, immediately falling in love with its location and view. However, its existing style and layout needed to be brought up to date. That’s when the couple called on Shayla to help create a home that would be as comfortable for entertaining friends as it is for the family of four. One of the most dramatic aspects of the renovation involved removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room. “When you were at the stove cooking, you’d be looking at a wall
48 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
instead of out at the view. That wall had to come down so you could see the water,” Shayla says. She also notes another wall between the kitchen and living room was removed to make the space more open and livable. The end result is exactly the Greers Ferry retreat the homeowners had hoped for—and to top it all off, they have what Shayla calls one of the best views in the state. “When we did the install the very first evening, it was emotional when I saw the sun go down,” she says. “I couldn’t believe they get to relax and spend time with their family there. I would say it’s one of the prettiest locations in Arkansas.”
“Because this is a lake house, I wanted to put in some furnishings that had an organic feel.” —Shayla Copas, designer
ROOM WITH A VIEW
Keeping in mind the way the family would use the house, Shayla used Crypton and performance fabrics wherever possible. “I wanted it to be functional,” she says. In the dining room, host and hostess chairs covered in Thibaut’s “Peacock Garden” as well as the rug are specially treated to prevent damage from both stains and UV rays.
July 2019 | athomearkansas.com 49
The home’s existing layout had several small “inlets” along the walls. In one of these areas near the entry, Shayla added a drawer, shelf, and bench to make this area function like a mudroom.
THOUGHTFUL RENOVATION
While several walls came down in the kitchen, Shayla tried to work within the confines of the original layout throughout the rest of the house. “When I renovate, I like to find a couple of things we can keep in place,” she says. “That gives them a story and a connection to the history of the home.” A small powder bathroom (above) is a great example of this resourceful thinking: “There was already a vintage cabinet the previous homeowners were using as a vanity, so instead of taking that out and having a new one made, we decided to just paint it,” she says. “That and the mirror were in perfect shape; they just needed to look fresh again.” She also installed wallpaper, new hardware, and a pair of happy paintings for a cheery, eyecatching room. An existing butler’s pantry received all new cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, paint, and modern amenities such as a wine chiller. The wallcovering is Thibaut’s “Laos” pattern.
50 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
PULL UP A SEAT
Shayla turned the long, narrow living room into cozy quarters by grouping furniture into three distinct sitting areas: “The main area has two sofas and some good-looking recliners; there’s a game table for the kids; and then a seating area with swivel chairs by the windows,” she says. “There are also ottomans that can be pulled into each individual seating area. We wanted as much seating as possible for when they have friends over.” The room, which is now visible from the kitchen and dining room, continues the rest of the home’s palette of taupe, cream, and shades of blue.
An attractive credenza provides storage for the living room’s audio-visual equipment and board games for the kids.
July 2019 | athomearkansas.com 51
FEELS LIKE HOME
Throughout the home are markers of one of Shayla’s favorite elements of design: texture. “I love to layer texture in a space,” she says. “I feel like it adds warmth, makes a space comfy, and makes it feel more homey and inviting.”
52 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
SCENE OF SERENITY
The only other part of the house that saw extensive renovation was the master bedroom. “There was a ton a closet space, which most people would usually love, but this is a vacation home, and a good deal of the room doesn’t need to be taken up by the closet,” Shayla explains. “I took out one side of the closets so the room would be larger, and they each have a chest on their side of the bed.” Due to limited countertop space in the master bath, Shayla put a desk in the bedroom to be used as a vanity area.
“When I renovate, I like to find a couple of things we can keep in place. That gives them a story and a connection to the history of the home.” —Shayla Copas, designer

ON A BRIGHT NOTE
Teal custom headboards, ottomans, and bedding paired with navy and seafoam accents in the daughter’s bedroom are a playful take on the blue palette seen in the rest of the home. For artwork, Shayla chose groupings of ocean-inspired paintings that are as at home in this lake house as they might be on a beachfront property.
54 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
MULTIPURPOSE ROOM
The son’s bedroom, which Shayla converted from an office into a third bedroom, features a daybed and custom bedding with the family’s monogram embroidered. The convertible sleeping area means this room can do double duty as a hangout for kids during the day.

The
best things in life don’t often come
around twice .
However, for this Arkansas couple, a breathtaking waterfront neighborhood on Hot Springs’s Lake Hamilton has been their getaway at two different points in life. “When our children were small, we had a house nearby and would often walk down to the very point where we now built to watch firework shows and hang out with neighbors,” the homeowner says. After living out of state for a number of years, the family moved back and began to think about looking for a lake house in the Hot Springs area. “Someone told us they had cleared the lots at the point where we had previously had a house, and we were very interested. My husband went to the auction, and we were lucky enough to get a lot,” the homeowner says. With the view being a primary draw, the owners wanted to take full advantage of the location. Working with architect Carolyn Lindsey of Yeary Lindsey Architects and contractor Ron Formby, they began to develop and execute a plan for the home’s structure. “In addition to the sloped volume of the space, we used a lot of glass to bring the outdoors into each room,” Carolyn says. “For example, the living space projects toward the lake from the rest of the house allowing glass on three sides, which pulls that panoramic view into the room.” She notes that other features, such as the living room’s cypress ceiling, which continues onto the covered porch, help “reinforce the flow of indoor-outdoor space.” In addition to bringing the outdoors in, the homeowners also wanted to make responsible choices when it came to building materials and furnishings. “I wanted the house to be as green as possible,” the homeowner says. “I like using less chemicals, and I’m drawn to natural ways whenever possible.” Designer Brittany Nixon Brun of Brittany Nixon Creative helped the couple navigate these decisions while keeping a laidback aesthetic at the
NATURAL CHOICES
On its exterior, the two-story portion of the home is stucco with a linear chopped stone base, while the onestory section is wrapped in Brazilian Cumaru wood, a durable species that will weather well through the years. “We constructed the porches of cypress, with a design mimicking a rainscreen but spread out to allow light and breeze through,” Carolyn says. It was also important to the homeowners to leave the property’s trees intact when building the home, so the outdoor area was designed around them. They now provide abundant shade on the waterfront. Carolyn notes oversized sliding doors lead from the family room to the covered porch, thus reinforcing the connection between the indoors and outdoors.

forefront of the design. “They really like casual, comfortable pieces and also wanted the design to be eco-conscious,” Brittany says. “The homeowner did a lot of research on chemical-free products and energy efficiency features before we even came onboard,” she adds. Elements such as wool carpet, all-wood furnishings, and organic bedding are just a few of the eco-friendly pieces seen in the interior. Building off of Carolyn’s design for the home, Brittany also helped the couple make furnishing selections that would allow them to take advantage of the lake view from every angle and not detract or distract the eye from the wow just beyond. “Everything is very cohesive; the palette consists of blue and wood, which are very appropriate for this lakefront setting, where what’s outside the doors really makes the statement,” Brittany says.
CASUAL DINING
A cypress ceiling treatment begins in the dining room and carries through the living room out to the covered porch, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. Responsible use of materials also meant repurposing pieces the couple in the personal residence for use at the vacation home, such as the chandelier and dining table shown here. Brittany notes the homeowners have a cool collection of quirky pieces as well as art. Rather than adding built-in shelving, she brought in a standalone, industrial-style unit to house a few of these items.
VIEW POINT
A pair of swivel chairs in the living room offer what is arguably the best interior view of Lake Hamilton. The mix of woods, including acacia on the floor, cypress on the ceiling, and Cumaru outdoors, was carefully curated by the design team. “There are so many different species shown in this one space— and then we also used a couple of wooden furniture pieces—that we really had to make a concerted effort to have it feel cohesive,” Brittany says. Underfoot, a practical sisal rug is topped with a plush, bound-wool one for a comfortable feel.

LIGHT DINNER
Even in the kitchen, the focus is still directed to the landscape and lake seen outside the windows. A palette of white and wood creates a calm environment, while hand-painted tiles, seen behind the range, draw the eye. “I wouldn’t necessarily think to use these tiles in a casual lake house, but we loved the monochromatic look and wanted something with extra oomph,” Brittany says. The cerused finish found on the kitchen island is repeated in other rooms of the home.

SherwinWilliams’ “Comfort Gray”
SERENE SLUMBER
The master bedroom was originally sketched with a fireplace opposite the bed; however, after consideration, a wall of windows and a panoramic view of the lake won out. “The sea salt color here is very calming and refreshing,” Brittany says. “It’s not too blue and not too green.” The painting over the bed, a work by Benson-Cobb, was a housewarming gift from a friend who reached out to Brittany for advice on choosing a piece that would fit the space. Eco-friendly bedding and a bound-wool rug speak to the homeowners’ desire for natural products while still adhering to the comfortable, chic design.
64 At Home in Arkansas | July 2019
SOAK IT ALL IN
“The vaulted ceiling makes the architecture in the master bath very interesting to the eye,” Brittany says. Rather than paint the walls, she chose to highlight this feature and draw the eye upward with a textured tile that has the look of stone. As in nature, the stone blends with the wood cabinetry, which features a cerused finish. Wall-mounted fixtures keep the quartz countertops clear of visual clutter. “No matter where you are in this house, you get the view,” Brittany says of the placement of the tub. A chandelier with recycled glass pieces adds to the space’s light, airy style.

OUTDOORSY HYPE
One of the upstairs guest bedrooms has more of what Brittany calls an “earthy vibe.” “We left the blue downstairs and brought in more neutral, natural materials here,” she says. Again, harping on the home’s recurring theme of wood and water, this space speaks to the woodsy elements of the lake. A Gray Malin photograph featuring a zebra hangs over the bed; its graphic influence is echoed in the motif on the bedding and the structured grid fabric on the window treatments.
The guest bath continues a woodsy, textured design with a wall treatment featuring Kirei Board, made from reclaimed sorghum straw. An ebonystained vanity, copper lights, and iron mirror lend a hint of industrialism that works well alongside the focal wall.

preserving time While canning seems like a thoroughly Southern tradition, the practice of preserving perishables is essentially as old as civilization itself; in fact, historians believe certain methods originated around 2000 B.C. But more recently, at the turn of the 20th century, Southerners became particularly prolific canners, picklers, and makers of jellies and jams.
