I am amazed at how fast the months seem to pass by. It seems like just yesterday there were conversations taking place in the office about kids getting out of school and plans for upcoming family vacations. Now the conversation has changed to plans for the first day of a new school year and the adventures that await. Time is the one constant that does not stand still. For me it is something I never used to think about very often, but as I get older, I must say I do spend more time thinking about how to plan and manage my time better before it passes by. The August issue focuses on family homes that are to be enjoyed by all family members. Many people are skeptical about the thought of having an interior designer implement a highly styled space in their home with children living there every day. This was not a thought for the homeowners of this month’s featured spaces. Not only are these homes filled with youngsters that live in them daily, but friends of all ages are welcomed to enjoy these spaces as well. Molly Young is a great example of one such homeowner and designer. When you enter into this newly remodeled home in the heart of Little Rock there isn’t a doubt about how elegant and stylish the inhabitants must be, and you might not realize this home is also a haven to three small, rowdy boys. Not that a home must read as a daycare, but with light, pastel, luxurious fabric choices covering the latest furniture styles, you would not necessarily expect a homeowner to be so brave with her design choices. I love everything about this home and I know you will marvel at the style that one can achieve when you are not afraid to live every day to the fullest. Kevin Walsh, also known for designing some of the most beautiful and elegant spaces in the state, takes us into another one of his masterpieces. This family home he designed is another such home that has been finished for his clients to enjoy all the best in life. It is unique and personal to the homeowners’ style and preferences, but still seems timeless and ageless. Kevin’s approach to designing a family home incorporates the ideals of family living. He is a believer in living each day to the fullest, surrounded by the things and people you love. There are several other features you will enjoy—seeing how style and any age can go hand in hand. I must say that my favorite feature is the one closest to our hearts. Managing editor Tiffany Adams, along with her husband Ben, welcomed the newest member into their family just a short time ago. Tiffany graciously takes us into their home to share some unique family treasures that have made her new nursery special and delightful in more ways than one. Our At Home in Arkansas team is much like a branch of our own families and it is such a treat for us to share the joy in our lives with you, our readers.

Meet...
CHARLENE SIMON STEP INSIDE THIS AROMATIC BOUTIQUE IN HOT SPRINGS, CREATED BY CHARLENE SIMON, FOR AN ADVENTURE IN INDULGENCE WITH ALLNATURAL, HANDMADE BATH AND BODY PRODUCTS
HOW DID YOU GET INTO MAKING SOAP? This hobby–making soap–was literally created out of boredom. I was living in California at the time and my husband was on submarines in the Navy and he would be gone for extended periods of time. I was at home with our children who were very small then and I thought this would be a great outlet for my creativity and pass the time. HOW DID YOU COME TO HAVE A SHOP IN HOT SPRINGS? I am originally from St. Louis, but I moved to Hot Springs about 10 years ago to open my shop. I made the soaps in my kitchen for years and years and would give them as gifts for friends and family; but I’ve always wanted to open a shop in a small, quaint area. Hot Springs fit that perfectly. WHAT SETS YOUR SOAPS AND BODY PRODUCTS APART FROM OTHERS? Almost every thing we make is completely handmade. We have body scrubs, lotion, bath salts, perfume and natural deodorant. People are attracted to natural and handmade skincare because most of the ingredients are food based or edible separately. The soaps are made with plant oils like olive oil, coconut oil and rice bran oil. WHERE DO YOU ACTUALLY MAKE YOUR SOAPS AND BATH PRODUCTS? Everything you see in all our boutiques is handmade just two blocks from Bathhouse Row. We used to make them in the shop until about two years ago. We had to move production off-site as we were getting busier and bigger and were forced to move the kitchen due to space. We work five days a week hand-blending everything and then ship everything out to our other stores and from the website, which is like a full functioning store itself.

AS THE MOTHER OF TWO BOYS AND TWO STATIONERY STORES, TRISHA LOGAN CERTAINLY HAS HER HANDS FULL. When she isn’t shuttling her sons Crane, 11, and Finn, 8, to and from school and sports practices, she’s curating paper goods and gifts for her shop, Shindig Paperie, with locations on the historic downtown squares in Fayetteville and Bentonville. But even as a busy mom and business owner, she loves to throw the occasional shindig of her
own. “We like to do a small celebration the night before school starts, or after the first day of school,” Logan says. “The kids come home and I’ve set up a fun dinner for them.” To celebrate the new school year, Logan’s sons invited their friends to Shindig for craft night to make cards, newspaper hats, and envelope liners before heading over to the food truck court at Fayetteville’s Greenhouse Grille for a casual, al fresco dinner. August 2016 | athomearkansas.com 31
Newspaper Hats
Crane and his friends loved making newspaper hats, created from kits available at Shindig Paperie and decorated with washi tape.
Envelope Liners
Next, the kids made envelope liners from vintage map paper by tracing an envelope template (both available at Shindig Paperie), cutting it out, and using double stick tape or a glue stick to affix it to the inside of a blank envelope.
Assigned Seats No back-to-school party is complete without names spelled out on chalkboard. Logan created place settings for each child by writing their names in chalk on black cards, then affixing a pencil to the card with washi tape.

Washi Tape Cards Using washi tapes in a variety of colors and patterns (all available at Shindig Paperie), the kids created their own designs on blank notecards or envelopes, and trimmed the tape at the edges. “The kids can write notes to give their new teachers on the first day of school, or write a letter to their pen pals from summer camp, Logan says.

Al Fresco Feast
After the crafts were made, the crew gathered for dinner at the food truck court at Greenhouse Grille for a casual, summer meal of barbecue, coleslaw, and potato salad. Logan continued the map theme by covering the picnic tables in a red-and-white striped paper table cover and sheets of the vintage map paper. She add simple back-to-school centerpieces she created from bouquets of yellow pencils, vintage globes, and bowls of apples. August 2016 | athomearkansas.com 33

When you’re designing the home you’ve always dreamed of...
Life/Garden LUSH LANDSCAPING In keeping with the classic Southern style of this stately home, Keeley utilized hydrangeas throughout, including Endless Summer, Limelight, and Oakleaf varieties. Tall planters were given shape and structure with Kimberly Queen ferns, while purple Scaevola—Keeley’s favorite annual—adds a bright pop of color to the otherwise muted palette. Neatly trimmed boxwood and holly hedges juxtapose the lushness of the hydrangeas and ferns.

DOUBLE THE APPEAL The front lawn is divided into upper and lower halves. Keeley surrounded the upper lawn with hedges and lush plantings to create an intimate arrival area and extension of the front porch.
WITH STATELY, SOUTHERN HOMES, DESIGNERS WALK A FINE LINE BETWEEN IMPROVING ON THE ORIGINAL AND MUDDLING SOMETHING THAT WAS ALREADY BEAUTIFUL. But when Daniel Keeley of DK Design received a call that his clients were breaking ground on a remodel of this favorite Fayetteville estate, he didn’t hesitate to jump at the challenge, working alongside Alan Madewell Architects of Tulsa and Tim Janacek of Janacek Remodeling. The remodel allowed for a series of outdoor rooms around the property—the main terrace with an outdoor hearth and cozy seating area is a welcoming spot on cooler nights, while the fountain courtyard is a perfect reading nook. A dining area and fire pit around the pool terrace offer seating and lounging space for summer entertaining. Keeley used hedges and lush plant life to separate the rooms from one another and create a sense of intimacy, while luxurious furniture pieces in a monochromatic palette give the outdoor rooms a cohesive feel. “The homeowners’ commitment to quality and their ability to trust us and invest in the quality of the project is what makes this so great,” Keeley says.
CARPORT CONVERSION
Because a garage was on the list of additions in the remodel, an old carport off the dining room was no longer needed. Keeley repurposed the space as an intimate courtyard with comfortable seating and a water feature. The result was so beautiful, the homeowners added French doors from the dining room to access it more easily.

HEARTH OF THE HOME
Keeley teamed up with a local artisan to design a concrete console table that has the appearance of draped cloth, while chevron upholstered chairs and a white iron sofa create a space that feels as comfortable and chic as any indoor room. “I always tell people that outdoor furniture can and should be just as sophisticated as indoor furniture, he says.

This seating area is ideal for “sitting and chatting the night away” on the chic, color blocked banquette Molly had recovered. Two watercolors from local artist Ashley Saer hang above it, with a bar cart nearby to play the role of stylish bartender. Facing page: “The addition of the Philip Jeffries lavender grasscloth creates warmth and texture that feels like you are wrapped in a cocoon, and the Samuel and Sons beaded trim on the drapes has my heart,” Molly says.

Molly Young, a designer with Cobblestone & Vine, and her husband Rob have plenty to keep them busy. Not only has the Little Rock couple just finished remodeling their spacious family home in the sidewalk-lined Pleasant Valley neighborhood, but they also have three young boys: Harrison, 6, Henry, 5, and Hamilton, 3. A FRESH VISION After spending years in a French-Country-style home with “three under three,” the couple soon realized they had outgrown it. They needed more space—and a much cleaner palette to recreate Molly’s vision of youth and glamour. The Youngs embraced the blank, white canvas when they moved into their now newly remodeled home in Pleasant Valley, bringing with them only eight pieces of furniture from their previous home. Complete with a large, flat backyard for the boys to run around, Molly knew it was perfect. “The minute we walked in, I knew this was our house,” she says. “In the offer process, we learned the homeowners had raised their three sons in the house. That was my sign!” The Youngs embarked upon a year of planning and renovations with the help of Little Rock contractor Richard Harp. The plans included stripping the entire first floor down to the studs and creating individual spaces for their three boys. “One of the most rewarding design aspects of this August 2016 | athomearkansas.com 43
The Youngs brought in more natural light and removed countertop clutter in the all white kitchen. An informal dining area is complete with an inexpensive Parsons table from West Elm. “I knew the table was going to take a beating, so I didn’t want anything expensive or delicate,” Molly says. Facing page: A contemporary daybed folds out to a queen bed in the library, making room for extra guests and coordinating nicely with the modern shelving and an eye-catching chandelier.
particular house was creating the boys’ rooms because their personalities were a little more developed,” Molly says. As a mom and designer, Molly really wanted their bedrooms to not only be stylish, but function for years to come by using pieces that work for practically any age. SHADES OF BLUE Harrison has two twin beds to accommodate flexible sleeping arrangements, and Molly admits on many evenings one of his brothers will sneak into the extra bed. The Matouk bedding in white linen is accented with a navy tape accent and its crisp, tailored and preppy design contrasts with the playfulness of the window treatments, mirroring a splattered art project, and the accent pillows. Practical pieces like an inexpensive Ikea table with plastic chairs along with a casual rug provide both form and function for Harrison and his brothers. To match Henry’s room to his “spunky personality,” Molly chose A Bluesy Note from Sherwin Williams for the walls. Molly admits Henry has the nicest bed in the whole house with a 44 At Home in Arkansas | August 2016
luscious velvet upholstered headboard and frame and crisp white bedding. “It will still look great when he is an adult,” she says. COLOR SETS THE TONE While space and function were factors in their growing family’s needs, the color palette and fabrics finished out the plan and brought it all to life. “Color is a universal, non-verbal language; it’s not just a matter of aesthetics, but like music,” Molly says. “Color immediately connects the senses to create an emotional response.” And you can’t help but respond to the serene palette throughout the home—a mix of lavender, gray, and white with splashes of royal and pale blues. Inspired by another home they spotted in an issue of At Home in Arkansas, the entire home re-do stemmed from one paint color: Elation from Sherwin Williams. This contemporary purple hue instantly livened up the Young’s library, finished with built-in shelving, a daybed, and a Niermann Weeks chandelier. Elation was also used to highlight the ceilings of the living and dining rooms, and Molly chose a luxurious lavender grasscloth wall covering for the dining room walls.

The family room features a roomy sectional that is everyone’s favorite piece in the house. Low-level storage is also a key feature so the boys can access and put away their own toys. Facing page: Twin beds in Harrison’s room allow for flexible sleeping arrangements, and the Matouk bedding in white linen is accented with navy tape from Samuel and Sons to give it a preppy punch.
A FAMILY AFFAIR Antique brown hardwood floors provide continuity throughout the home, and patterned wool carpet keeps the kids cozy in the family room. “I wanted the kids to have a soft spot to play, but didn’t want to sacrifice style,” Molly says. The couple spent the most time thinking through the kitchen and how to best use that space. “Rob and I love to cook and entertain together, so we based the layout and workspace on how we both operate in the kitchen - together and separate,” she says. The Youngs incorporated a large window over the sink for natural light and to watch the boys in the backyard. They chose Calacutta Extra White marble for the kitchen counters and added modern conveniences such as two dishwashers and 46 At Home in Arkansas | August 2016
sleek pop-up Mocketts that spring upward from the counters to hide outlets. To add to Molly’s need for practicality with three small children, she added an inexpensive West Elm Parson table and reimagined her old dining chairs with a fresh coat of paint and new coordinating fabric for a relaxed family seating area. So where does everyone relax at the end of a long day? The sectional in the family room, of course. “I always tell my clients to invest in upholstery because it has to perform for you, not just look pretty,” Molly says. “Our whole family can comfortably spread out and watch movies on the sofa; the cushions are down filled and thoroughly squishy, making it a nap lover’s dream.”

An indoor tree house was the ultimate play space for the brother and sister pair who grew up in this Chenal home. However, now that he is away at college and she is preparing for her senior year, a tree house doesn’t hold quite the same appeal it once had. “Their mom decided it was time for the room to be updated since the kids are older, and she called me to come up with a design and color scheme that would work for the space and make it more usable for the kids now that they are older,” designer Peri-Gay Walker explains. At the top of the list was a lounging area and a space for friends who were staying over at the family’s house. To accomplish this Walker transformed the tree house into a fun, contemporary loft that includes a padded headboard and custom mattress—perfect for accommodating an extra overnight guest. In addition, she added an oversized pouf in the nook below the loft to offer space for relaxing and watching movies, as well as a new sleeper-sofa sectional. Aside from these functional updates, the room also received a complete style refresh in the process. Starting with the loft area where wood railing was traded for a sleek and modern wire option that coordinates with the silver leather headboard and beveled glass trim. The palette of the room was also refreshed in the aforementioned silver and shades of blue, including a soft blue wall color that was selected by the homeowners’ daughter. “We brought in the navy accents to ground the rest of the design and make it feel a little more boyish,” Walker notes. Finishing touches, such as the ikat accent pillows, a navy-and-silver bulletin board, a glass top table, and a futuristic-style ceiling fan pull the look together. Walker also took inspiration from Pinterest to create the gallery wall seen behind the sectional. To create each unique piece of art, she had a baroque-style frame cut into sections and then added framed pictures of the children through the years, along with silver sunburst mirrors to tie in with the mirrors used to trim the loft frame. The result is not only more functional for the family, it’s also given the room a new aesthetic that Walker describes as “sophisticated, but funky and cool.”

Sugar Spice A CHEERFUL COLOR PALETTE AND SWEET, PERSONAL DETAILS AWAIT THE DAUGHTER OF OUR MANAGING EDITOR, TIFFANY ADAMS.
“I didn’t know that I had always wanted a pink nursery, but I naturally drifted in that direction,” Tiffany Adams says. “Actually, I was convinced I was having a boy at first,” she says of the surprise pregnancy. After several months of hoping for a baby, Tiffany and her husband Ben decided to pursue other means to grow their family and began the lengthy process of being screened and approved as adoptive parents. One morning last fall, Tiffany awoke and took a pregnancy test — more out of habit than expectation — and to her surprise, it was positive. “The timing of it just blows me away, because the very next day, we got the call that we had been approved for adoption,” she recalls. For now, the Adams’ adoption is on hold as they welcome their daughter, Martha Ann, home. “I have been joking that her colors are blush and bashful, like Shelby says on Steel Magnolias,” Tiffany says. “But there are actually three shades of pink in the room.” A vibrant pink buffalo check

was the starting point for the nursery, and Tiffany hopes that the draperies will be used as Martha Ann grows. She and Ben updated a dresser and wardrobe cabinet with a bright raspberry color — a custom mix of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint — and new knobs from Anthropologie. The bedding, a combination from Pottery Barn Kids and Serena & Lily, adds the third, more subtle, shade of pink. A classic white Jenny Lind-style crib and an upholstered rocking chair round out the furnishings. To accessorize the space, the couple brought in a few pieces from their own childhood. The set of Beatrix Potter books belonged to Ben and an embroidered dress that Tiffany wore as a baby is framed in a shadowbox. Over the crib, an abstract piece called “May Blessings Rain Down” by Tiffany’s local friend and college roommate, Bethany Johnson, introduces a contrasting shade of mint green to the space, which Tiffany calls “sweetly chic.”

In the formal living room, a large rug connects two seating areas. Seating is by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair and Barbara Barry for Henredon. Designer Kevin Walsh of Bear Hill Interiors had the loveseat recovered in a bold animal print, and repurposed the homeowner’s mirror. Lavender silk draperies have an embroidered trim, and cabinets flanking the fireplace are outfitted with new doors and ring-pull hardware.
C
Can ‘chic’ and ‘family-friendly’ be used to describe the same home? Kevin Walsh of Bear Hill Interiors says a resounding ‘yes,’ and a recently completed addition to a Little Rock home is proof positive. After seeing his work in the home of a friend, the homeowner called on Kevin to liven up her own interiors and expand a traditional home to better suit her large family. She also wanted to inject some color into her mostly neutral furnishings. “She has a great eye for design, but she needed help pulling it all together,” Walsh says. First, they outfitted the living and dining room with cool shades of navy blue, gray, and lavender and then completed bedrooms for two young daughters. Next, they enclosed a garage to create a spacious kitchen—perfect for entertaining their large extended family—and gained a mudroom, home office, and a second-floor laundry and multipurpose space. GO BOLD “Color and pattern hide a multitude of sins,” Walsh says, who
54 At Home in Arkansas | August 2016
utilized both to bring life and function to the home. Patterned carpet used in the children’s bedrooms hides stains and traffic wear while bringing an additional layer into the design. “The house had a lot of beige when we first met,” Walsh recalls. The new palette uses plenty of neutrals to unify the rooms, but Walsh added a crisp element by sticking to white, gray, and various shades of blue as the base. Tones of lavender, plum, and even yellow enliven the cool palette. “A home with so many children will automatically have a lot of activity, so I used color to instill a sense of calm into the living spaces,” he explains. FURTHER REFLECTION With minimal accessories, most of the home’s sparkle comes in the form of crystal chandeliers and intricate mirrors—both safely out of reach of curious little hands. For more hard-working pieces, Walsh selected a lacquered finish in several rooms. “Not every piece of furniture has to be brown or wood-toned,” Walsh says. “Paint is
August 2016 | athomearkansas.com 55
a great option for bringing in more color, and lacquer is especially durable, in addition to being pretty.” NEW TRADITIONAL Damask wallpaper and silk curtains may not be the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of a fresh interior, but in Walsh’s deft hands, they are that and more. “A really neutral look just didn’t suit the homeowner,” he says. “We wanted to keep things traditional, but with more energy.” To respect the classic bones of the house, Walsh used traditional elements such as formal valances and European antiques, but styled them in an updated way. Grosgrain trim livens up the draperies in the girls’ bedrooms, and modern art and animal-print fabrics mingle with antiques 56 At Home in Arkansas | August 2016
in the living room. A mix of styles and eras—the dining room has Louis XVI dining chairs and an Art Deco sideboard—keeps things interesting. SMART FINISHES Gone are the days of sacrificing style for durability, and this home is a study in making good choices. A low-maintenance granite counter is similar in color and movement to marble, but without the upkeep. Walsh selected Sunbrella fabric for the breakfast room chairs and barstools for ease of use. “Outdoor fabrics are not what they used to be,” he explains. In the dining room, the lovely pearlized wallpaper is above the wipeable surface of the wainscot, making it just out of reach of potential fingerprints.

ROOM TO GROW The new kitchen is now the heart of the busy family’s home. “They are the kind of people whose home is always open—they frequently entertain their extended family, so they needed plenty of seating options in the kitchen,” Walsh explains. He designed a simple layout with a commercial-style range anchoring one wall and an expansive island in the middle. A nearby breakfast table adds even more casual seating. In the living room, he used an over-sized rug to unify two seating spaces. Upstairs, he tucked a bunk room into a former attic, and even made room for a daybed on the stair landing to maximize sleepover capabilities. With smart planning, a careful choice of finishes, and a heap of color and style, the once-dull home is now a haven for growth and creativity for this busy family of six. Walsh designed custom bunks -- one for each of the family’s four children -- that are accessible to each other via cut-outs in the wall. Each features a shelf for personal belongings and a nautical-inspired sconce by Circa Lighting. The graphic carpet is by David Hicks.

WHY HIRE A
If you’ve ever thought about hiring a designer but aren’t really sure if it is something you need to do or is worth the cost here are a few tips to keep in mind:
DESIGNER 1
Designers offer a wealth of KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE.
2
Designers have CONNECTIONS and ACCESS to vendors and RESOURCES for furniture and decorative items only available to the design trade.
3 4
Designers have CONTACTS and RELATIONSHIPS with home improvement professionals - contractors, painters, plumbers, electricians - who they work with regularly and trust.
The AESTHETIC will add value to your home.
5
You will SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN when you invest in items that create the cohesive look you desire for your home instead of continual purchases that don’t measure up.

SHAYLA COPAS INTERIORS Offering a full range of timeless and classic design services focusing on the originality of each client company name: Shayla Copas Interiors owner: Shayla Copas trademarks: I am known for my eye for color, texture, and detail. I do not have a signature style. From transitional to traditional, I believe that a true design should reflect the client while using my design talents to pull the project together. As a team we can make your dream home a reality! history: Shayla Copas has been designing homes and businesses in the South since 1997. She has built her business on integrity, her keen eye for detail, and that bond she creates with each of her clients. Shayla’s projects are full spectrum, from small to large. New construction, remodel, furniture procurement, or a small facelift of a room--she will tackle them all! design advice: First, scale is everything; going too small with furnishings and accessories can often hurt an otherwise great design. Second, put your signature on it! Even when hiring a designer, make sure to convey your taste so that the design reflects it. A perceptive designer will take hold of your favorite elements to make the design yours! Third, be careful not to get too involved with trends. Your key and largest investments should be timeless!

Summer Sensation With lingering hot summer days, there is nothing more refreshing than biting in to this luscious summer melon. Cantaloupes’ savory sweet flavor satisfies even the youngest sweet tooth and they make a great addition to salads, desserts, and beverages. Whether you enjoy them sliced, cubed, or wrapped—our favorite is with prosciutto—cantaloupes are a quenching treat any time of day. You’ll find the tastiest cantaloupes right off the vine so pick one up at the farmer’s market while they are still in season and enjoy!
