September is a busy month. School is back in swing; the first official day of fall is approaching; and some are trying to squeeze in one last vacation. But in my years on this earth, the month has always been synonymous with one thing: football. With a double dose of devoted sports fandom from both my father and older brother, my younger days were shaped around Friday nights at the local stadium and college game day Saturdays in the South. The passion for the sport is still with me today as this weekend tradition continues. Whether heading to a game or gearing up for a watch party, September officially kicks off my excitement (and stress) level for the new season. (Just ask my husband!) In the world of At Home in Arkansas, September takes on another exciting theme: kitchens. There are so many creative things happening today with kitchen design—two-toned cabinetry, open shelving, unique finishes, state-of-the-art appliances, and more. It’s an area of the home that allows us to express our personalities through both décor and function. This issue is packed full of ideas (over 80, in fact!) to really get things cooking. We traveled statewide from El Dorado to Fayetteville to highlight trendsetting spaces primed and prepped for family meals, gatherings with friends, and, of course, football watch parties. Plus, with a glamorous tailgating setup from Kevin Walsh and a game day ready outfit, we’ve got you 100% prepped for all of the month’s sport-focused festivities. Whatever September may represent to you, may the fall season bring a fresh start, cooler temps, quality time in the kitchen with your family and friends—and perhaps a win or two for your favorite team.

Q&a

Kitchen & Bath Design Trends with Shayla CopaS

what is hot right now in kitchen design? Kitchens are going lighter and brighter. Gone are the heavily carved days for cabinetry which are replaced with cleaner lines. Cabinets are now painted instead of stained. Grey and white are the most popular colors in kitchen design for 2017. what will we be seeing in hardware for 2017? I’d say ”everything goes” right now! We are seeing brushed copper, brushed gold, nickel, acrylic and so forth. Bronze is fading out. tell us what is currently trending in counter surfaces? We are seeing more clients moving to quartz surfaces because of their consistency in color and because they do not stain as easily as marble and granite. Products like Cambria and Ceaser Stone are taking over the design market. what is popular in bathroom design? Classic/retro tile, clean crisp colors, patterned tile and textured wall tile. Wallcovering is back in a BIG way for powder room design and French shower door enclosures are trending.

YVES DELORME NOW AVAILABLE AT JAYSON CAIN INTERIORS The full line of Yves Delorme bedding and table linens are now available through Jayson Cain Interiors in Little Rock. The brand, which previously had a separate standalone location in the capital city, has merged into the designer’s Cantrell Road showroom. Hugo Boss, a label under the Yves Delorme line, is one of the new offerings. “This is a more contemporary look with a lower price point but it has the same feel and quality as all the other linens,” Cain says. The shop will also have the Roma collection, percale 500-thread-count bedding that is available in eight colors at a lower price point than some of the brand’s other collections. Additionally, they will offer customers the opportunity to create custom bedding by choosing from hundreds of patterns and colors through the Bespoke program, which creates your vision in just six weeks. 8202 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, (501) 960-4802, jaysoncaininteriors.com

Popular Pine Bluff gift, floral, and décor store Shepherd’s Florist is now a part of central Arkansas’s Tipton & Hurst family. The business, which will now be known as Shepherd Tipton & Hurst, will continue to be a full-service florist and offer bridal registry services. Tipton & Hurst president Howard Hurst noted that both Shepherd’s and Tipton & Hurst have long-standing traditions of customer service and he plans to continue the businesses’ philosophies of doing whatever it takes to satisfy customers following this transition. “We have known the Shepherds for a very long time and when John, the founder’s son and current owner, decided to retire, we felt like it was a natural fit and great opportunity for us to take on this business,” Hurst says. He also notes that the staff, which includes numerous talented floral designers, interior designer Dixie Pittillo, and new manager and Pine Bluff native Mary Talbot, is a part of the community and enjoys helping each person who walks through the door, and they look forward to serving Southeast Arkansas. buildings associated with mining had vanished. Driving back to Fayetteville, I happened to see barns. When I told my professor, he said, “Well the Romans had their coliseum, we have our barns.” I spent the whole semester in Northwest Arkansas photographing barns and mapping their locations. At the end of semester, I received a grant to continue studying barns over the summer. Three years after architecture school, I entered graduate school and started painting my first series of Arkansas barns. Ten years later, while teaching in Tallahassee, Florida, I painted a second series of tobacco barns. Twenty years later, I did my third series of barns. This led to a large project where I painted a barn in each county in Arkansas. I’ve painted the inside, outside, and looking through the barn. ASIDE FROM BARNS, YOU CREATE A WIDE VARIETY OF THEMES, INCLUDING BIRDS, BICYCLES, ROCKS, AND MORE. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE MULTIPLE SUBJECT MATTERS? My work is directly related to my location. For instance, after graduate school, I moved to San Francisco and painted fire escapes. When I was in Ohio, I painted steel mills. In Tallahassee, I painted tobacco barns. Florence, Italy is where I began to work on various themes in nature. I would usually work on these different subjects two and a half to three years at a time. But today, I work on several different things in the same day. It’s a change in my creative process, but I prefer the variety now.

Life/Get to Know

YOU’RE KNOWN TO MANY AS A WATERCOLOR ARTIST, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE AN EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND IN ARCHITECTURE. HOW HAS THIS SHAPED YOUR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AND PAINTING TECHNIQUE? That question comes up a lot. Of course my training in architecture plays a large part in my process. It influences the technical approach I have to painting, but I was painting long before I ever knew what architecture was. The first painting I did was in 1960. Painting every day for forty years is what really shapes the work. I am responding to what I see and hopefully people interpret the work in different ways. BARNS ARE ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC THEMES IN YOUR ART. HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN THEM AS A SUBJECT? When I was in architecture school at the University of Arkansas, I took a historical preservation class. The professor wanted us to do a semester-long project of documenting building types with photography. I had just discovered a 35mm camera. My father was a coal miner in Paris, Arkansas, so I planned to document coal mines. On my trip to Paris, I discovered that all of the

WITH AN EXTENSIVE CAREER AND TRAVELS ALL OVER THE WORLD, YOU ENDED UP IN YOUR NATIVE ARKANSAS IN A PICTURESQUE SETTING THAT COMBINES YOUR LIFE AND ART. TELL US ABOUT YOUR GROUNDS AND WHAT A GALLERY-GOER CAN EXPECT TO SEE WHEN VISITING. I first purchased 6 acres of property in Goshen [rural Fayetteville] in 1984 after returning from teaching architecture at King Faisal in Saudi Arabia. I was not yet living in Arkansas, but rather teaching in Tallahassee. I’ve had galleries in New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami, Washington, D.C., and others. Around 1995, I felt confident enough in my painting to give up teaching and move back to Arkansas. That is when I first built my house and later came the studio and gallery. I have added 24 acres over the years. One of the properties has a barn that I continue to restore. The studio and gallery exhibit many original watercolors and art glass. Our main gallery space is open yearround by appointment, and we have open studios throughout the year. This fall’s open studio will feature recent paintings and art glass. It will be free and open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays in September and October.

“Why not make it chic?” Kevin Walsh says of his philosophy on tailgating. “That’s really my whole mantra with everything.” Whether you’re heading to a polo match, a fireworks display, a picnic in the park, or a football game, convenience is also key when it comes to packing up the car, unloading, and enjoying the day with friends. Here, Walsh uses items from his home as well as his Little Rock shop, Bear Hill Interiors, to set the scene for a laid-back day with kicked-up style. Follow his tips to create your own stunning setup.

32 At Home in Arkansas | September 2017

Life/Entertaining Walsh used fabric swatches from his studio to create a pennant-style garland.

SHOP YOUR HOME FIRST Make your setup a reflection of your own personal style and your friends are sure to spot you quickly in a crowd. To do this, Walsh recommends gathering items from around your home. Blue and white is a favorite combo of his, so he used the colors as a jumping-off point. If you have a breakfast nook or casual gathering space in the home, consider borrowing its chairs for your outing. The French bistro chairs shown here have a plastic covering that makes them outdoor friendly and easy to clean; plus, they stack for convenience. “The blankets are ones that I picked up for next to nothing, simply because I liked them. You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve used them for table coverings or to wrap up on chilly nights outdoors,” Walsh adds. KEEP YOUR GEAR READY TO GO The hardest part of tailgating can be gathering and organizing your gear. Create a designated basket (like the large wicker one seen in Walsh’s vehicle) that holds tableware, blankets, and anything that won’t spoil, so you are prepared to head out at a moment’s notice. FRESHEN THE LOOK WITH ADDITIONS To keep the setup from getting stale at event after event, add a few new pieces each time you pack the car. For this occasion, Walsh created a pennant garland from fabric swatches that were stapled to a length of grosgrain ribbon. “You could use paper scraps or something that is specific to the event; there are a ton of options to personalize this idea,” he says. Fresh flowers along with potted plants and herbs (which normally grace his back porch) also add vitality. SERVE TRAVEL-FRIENDLY FOOD & DRINKS This refers not only to dishes that you can prepare ahead of time and take with you to the venue, but also to fare that can be picked up and eaten while you walk around—finger foods, if you will. For this particular occasion, Walsh served fried chicken—a crowd-pleasing Southern staple, along with assorted cheeses, crackers, and pretzels. Other ideas include berries or grapes, small sandwiches or sliders, cookies or miniature cupcakes, and even deviled eggs. “To ensure everything is fresh, keep your cooler stocked with extras that you can use to replenish your serving platters easily,” Walsh says. The same idea goes for beverages. Consider using acrylic tumblers—which Walsh notes can be picked up for close to the same amount you would spend on disposable cups—for water, cocktails, or wine. These cups are shatter-resistant and can be washed and placed in your kit to be ready for the next adventure. Walsh also brought water in a large vessel rather than using individual plastic bottles. “I particularly like that all of these containers are earth-friendly and that they allow you to coordinate your own look,” the designer adds.

Keep throws on hand for an extra seating option or to wrap up on cool days.

BUILT FOR BOTH PERSONAL ENJOYMENT AS WELL AS ENTERTAINING, THIS ARKADELPHIA FAMILY’S OUTDOOR SPACE INVITES RELAXATION AND TOGETHERNESS

Terri and Taylor King’s backyard had numerous things going for it: a generous-sized porch, a pool, and a sweeping view of their pasture. However, after raising two children in the home they built in 2001, they were ready for a few updates. “Richard Harp worked with them on a renovation of the interior of their home, and when it came time to talk about the backyard, he suggested the Kings meet with us,” David Munsey III of Better Lawns and Gardens says of his introduction to the project. Specifically, the Kings hoped to create a space they could enjoy together on weeknights as well as when family and friends visited.

“THERE IS A PANORAMIC VIEW THAT EVOLVES WITH THE SEASONS, SO I DIDN’T WANT TO DO ANYTHING THAT BLOCKED THAT.” — TAYLOR KING

“This is their forever home, and we wanted to help them create something that would last and that they could enjoy with their kids and grandkids for years,” Munsey says. First things first, Munsey needed to ensure the foundation of the area was secure and the existing features were primed for the transformation. To accomplish this, a large retaining wall was constructed at the edge of the backyard using local stone. Munsey and his team also extended the pool deck and used earth-toned pavers to make the surround fit with the transition to the wooded area behind the property. With these elements squared away, the focus shifted to the construction of a pavilion and how it would be used. “There is a panoramic view that evolves with the seasons, so I didn’t want to do anything that blocked that,” King says. To keep the line of sight clear, Munsey chose an appropriate place to situate the structure and used low walls that allow 36 At Home in Arkansas | September 2017

one to see through most of the pavilion. “It’s essentially three rooms under one roof,” Munsey says of the space, which includes a kitchen, a sitting area, and a dining space. The centralized living area features a wood-burning, gas-ignition fireplace and television, along with a tongue-and-groove ceiling treatment and recessed lights, both of which flow throughout the structure. The kitchen is a full-service galley-style space that features a grill, sink, refrigerator, and granite countertops, which allow for ease of use in prep work and clean up. Munsey put the Kings in touch with Antique Brick Outdoors in Little Rock, and the couple made a trip to their showroom to select comfortable furnishings. “Mrs. King likes color, so Loren at Antique Brick Outdoors really worked with her to find cushions and fabrics that would tie everything together with the natural environment,” Munsey notes. In the dining area, a concrete table is surrounded by chairs from Summer Classics. Similarly, generous-sized rocking chairs and a sofa pair with a teak coffee table and concrete side table in front of the hearth. Outside of the pavilion, the look conveys with chaise lounges that feature cushions in the same palette. To complete the design, Better Lawns and Gardens filled Jackson Pottery containers with plantings that provide additional color and will last through mid-fall. “This is my oasis; I really enjoy coming home at the end of the day and having a place to relax,” King says of the end result.

DESIGNER KIMBERLY HARPER OF HARPER HOWEY INTERIORS GIVES HER KITCHEN A HIGH-STYLE YET FAMILY-FRIENDLY FACELIFT S T O R Y: K AT I E CO O P E R P H O T O G R A P H Y: R E T T P E E K

August 2017 | athomearkansas.com 43

When undergoing a renovation, it’s important to take into account what currently functions well in the space; often times there may be some things worth leaving as is. When it came time for designer Kimberly Harper of Harper Howery Interiors to take stock of her kitchen before a remodel, she knew the existing layout of perimeter cabinetry needed to remain intact. However, the countertops, island, appliances, and laundry area needed a new lease on life. Read on to see how she created a colorful, contemporary space. >>>

44 At Home in Arkansas | August 2017

By using shiplap detail on the island and upper cabinets, contemporary hardware, and an abstract backsplash, Harper transformed the kitchen. Facing page: The kitchen sink is centered on a large bay window—perfect for an indoor herb garden.

The starting point for Harper’s design came from the graphic, dark blue backsplash. “The backsplash tile is from the Robert A.M. Stern collection from Walker Zanger. I love the deep color and contrast with the cabinets,” she says. Amidst the cream upper and lower cabinets, Harper used a coordinating custom shade of blue on the reconfigured island. “The island used to have two posts that extended the countertop to allow for barstools. I wanted to simplify and make it a little smaller so that we would have more room in the breakfast area,” Kimberly says of its new compact footprint. The designer also notes that one of the main priorities in redesigning her kitchen was the countertops. “I really disliked the previous ceramic

tile, and I didn’t care for the grout lines,” she says. A neutral-toned quartz with gray veining adds a fresh, clean look. “And I love the smooth surface for rolling out dough,” she adds. A shiplap treatment adds interest to the island’s sides and is a detail that can be seen from the adjoining sitting room. This same style can also be found above the upper cabinets giving the illusion of to-the-ceiling cabinetry. “This kitchen had a country cottage look, and the cabinets were a light maple stain,” Harper says. “The house is traditional in its style of architecture. I wanted to add a little contrast to that using updated, simple lines with the shiplap and brass contemporary hardware on the cabinets.”

August 2017 | athomearkansas.com 45

Floating shelves above a new commercial series stainless steel gas range (Harper’s favorite part of the kitchen) create an area for decorative accessories. “I removed the glass cabinets above the range and added shelves. This also allowed me to carry the backsplash tile all the way up the wall and still have a bit of storage,“ Harper says. Just around the corner from the kitchen, Harper’s laundry area—which also serves as a small entry for guests coming through both the home’s side door and garage—received a high-style makeover of its own. Distressed black-and-white tile flooring adds a touch of whimsy to the small space. A built-in cabinet with coordinating brass hardware is equipped with an apron-front sink and large drawers for storing laundry essentials. A stackable washer and dryer set is hidden behind closet doors to keep the pass-through area tidy.

46 At Home in Arkansas | August 2017

In the breakfast area, a dark wood pedestal table fixed under a large pendant chandelier is eclectically styled with three acrylic ghost chairs. “The ghost chairs were perfect for the small space; it is a tight area so that helps,” Harper says of the chairs’ visually light weight. To round out the seating arrangement, a curved banquette upholstered in blue and cream fabric is nestled in the large window. Draperies in a white and gray Greek key pattern bring a soft texture to the space. An adjoining sitting area comprised of four club chairs with colorful geometric pillows is arranged around a white painted brick fireplace. Abstract art in bright red, magenta, and blue caps off the open concept kitchen/living space for Harper and her children to enjoy.

The laundry room makeover included new cabinetry, a beveled subway tile backsplash, and oldworld-inspired flooring. Facing page: Harper’s open concept kitchen blends seamlessly with the adjoining sitting room, which is styled in neutral tones with pops of color.

LET THE LIGHT IN A FRESH TAKE ON FARMHOUSE DESIGN BRINGS LIFE TO THIS RANCH-STYLE HOME’S KITCHEN

Tucked away on two acres of property in West Little Rock sits the home of Angie and Bob Alexander. Inspired by the setting, the couple was eager to create a home that complemented the natural environment. “This is a Chenal home right in the middle of town, but it feels like it’s out in the middle of the country,” Katie Henry of Katie Grace Designs says of her clients’ rural-like setting. The Alexanders previously hired Henry to revamp their family room, dining room, and entry way to evoke a light, farmhouse-inspired style—coined as “Chenal Transitional Farmhouse” by Henry. “Angie called me

about six months after that ready to do a full-home remodel and asked if I would help her,” Henry explains. The most significant part of this remodel was the transformation of the dark, cramped kitchen. Henry notes the homeowners had clear priorities for the makeover: increase the size and openness while updating the style to match the farmhouse elements seen throughout the rest of the home. To accomplish these goals, Henry called on Mark Caruthers of WillMark Homes to lead the construction portion of the project. “Originally the kitchen was very chopped up with two small pantries and an angled hallway,” Caruthers says. “We took everything out, including the cabinetry, and in doing so, we doubled the square footage of the kitchen.”

TEXTURE CAN MAKE THE DESIGN. IT CAN GO FROM LOOKING BLAND AND BORING TO HAVING RICHNESS AND DEPTH,” —Katie Henry

With twice as much space to work with, Henry and her team designed a simplified, open layout with an oversized island. Toneon-tone white shaker cabinetry, subway tile, and granite countertops complement the neutral walls, which are painted in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. “She’d gone from dark to light throughout the entire house, so we carried that into the kitchen,” Henry says of the now-cohesive, airy palette. Sleek hardware adds contrast to the all-white backdrop, and floating shelves in a light wood finish bring in personality through a display of colorful accessories and dishware—many of which are handmade by Angie who is a talented potter. A preexisting built-in seat on the bay window provides a nook to take in a view of the large backyard. “The only thing that stayed was this window seat and the skylight,“ Henry says—two important elements that bring in natural light. Henry used the window space as an opportunity to incorporate pattern and texture through printed textiles, rattan window shades, and Moroccan-style side tables that double as an ottoman or stool. “Texture can make the design. It can go from looking bland

A window seat with plush pillows creates a cozy corner in the open kitchen.

and boring to having richness and depth,” Henry notes. For instance, the designer chose a handcrafted subway tile rather than a style that is completely flat. “We wanted a tile that had some movement in it,” she says. Other farmhouse-inspired elements, such as the gray-wash stain on the white oak floors, bring home the space’s simple, natural feel. Henry notes that the inspiration for the floors actually came in the middle of the project. “When the floors were first installed, we all fell in love with the light tone of the raw wood.” The designer chose a light gray-wash treatment finished off with a matte clear coat to preserve the natural hues. “When Angie saw them, she wanted them throughout the entire house!” Henry says. By bringing in these down-to-earth touches, Henry and the team brought to life the Alexanders’ vision.

CENTRAL KITCHEN STANDOUT FIXTURES AND INTRICATE DESIGN DETAILS BRING PERSONALITY TO THIS WEST LITTLE ROCK SPACE

A shared situation can often make for the best relationships. For designer Miguel Newberg of M. N’Teriors and her West Little Rock clients, temporary displacement brought them together. “We had known each other for a number of years,” the designer relates, “and then we discovered we were living in the same apartment complex while I remodeled and she built.” The homeowner says she had “always wanted to work with Miguel,” and the shared circumstance seemed to bring them together. The homeowners were already in the process of building their dream home with the help of Dustin Hennard of Hennard Custom Homes. Hennard helped the owners tweak the floor plan for the timber-frame hybrid house to fit their needs both now and in the future. “She was very forward thinking,” Newberg adds of the spatial planning the homeowner desired. An X motif is repeated throughout the kitchen on the glass-front cabinetry doors as well as on the range hood and island.

A palette of grays covers the transitional-style space, while variations provide visual interest. For example, the painted cabinetry is covered with a glaze that adds a patina while highlighting the door frames and architectural elements. Additionally, freeform silver and charcoal veining runs through the quartzite backsplash and countertops. The hue also carries over to the fifth wall. “They sent me a couple of pictures of options they liked,” Hennard says of the inspiration for the ceiling treatment, “and I scrounged to find enough pecky cypress wood to use for this design.” The result is an eye-catching diagonal installation in the coffered ceiling that is sure to have eyes looking upward.

In the same fashion, standout features await at every turn in the kitchen. A large island was a must-have on the homeowner’s list. This centrally located work and dining space is accented with two oversized pendants. The pair of fixtures frame the custom range hood, which features the room’s repeated X motif. “I asked her to start files online with pictures of rooms and decor she liked,” Newberg says. “This X pattern was one of her inspiration pieces; I loved it and helped her to carry it throughout the room on the cabinetry design for continuity.” To create contrast with the neutral, serene backdrop, four ladder-back barstools, which came from the couple’s previous home, were painted in a vivid turquoise. Similarly, a mix of metals fills the space; unobtrusive oilrubbed bronze hardware can be seen on the cabinets while a hammered copper sink and pull-down faucet take center stage at the island. “She is the type of client who would rather wait a bit to find just the piece that really sets the space apart, and that really makes the overall design magnificent,” Newberg says.

The transitional space features a mix of copper, stainless steel, and oil-rubbed bronze finishes, all of which are tied together with the gray backdrop.

A MOTHER-DAUGHTER DESIGN TEAM UPDATES A QUAINT HILLCREST KITCHEN TO MAKE IT FUNCTION FOR A BUSY FAMILY

Picturesque homes with historic architecture

and charming details are what make the Little Rock neighborhood of Hillcrest a popular, sought-after area. With the beauty of these homes sometimes comes the sacrifice of space. When Melody and Judge Chris Piazza set out to renovate their Hillcrest kitchen, they shared the following wish list with Mara Lamb Malcolm and Retha Lamb of Lamb’s Interior Design: better flow, additional storage, updated surfaces, and a central gathering area. “This is a busy family and they often entertain,” Malcolm says. “They wanted to keep the cozy feel of the kitchen— particularly the small breakfast area where they share meals with their son—but we needed to improve the flow and cohesiveness of the space.” To accomplish this, the design team reworked the space while still honoring its original integrity.

A patterned Roman shade adds personality and softness to the neutral-toned kitchen.

“The layout of the kitchen was our jumping off point,” Malcolm says. The design team knew they needed to better utilize the square footage of the kitchen and breakfast room in order for it to function in a more efficient fashion. “Mom is truly a space genius—she suggested we remove the wide island, and replace it with a long, narrow option,” Malcolm says of the planning process. They called on Nick Turchi from Kitchen and Bath Ideas to help execute these plans. The reconfigured island with an extended countertop now allows for additional bar seating when needed. The trio then decided to construct a large dining bar in the adjoining breakfast space. “This piece most impacted the function of the kitchen,” Malcolm says. Upholstered stools with nail-head trim are arranged around the built-in, bar-height table that mimics the kitchen cabinetry and its countertop—a unique alternative to the traditional table-and-chairs setup. “Carrying the cabinetry and surfaces into this previously distinct breakfast space not only increased the overall size of the kitchen but also created new dining options and tons of space for entertaining buffet-style or the occasional school project,” Malcolm says of the multi-use structure, which features strategically placed

A Roman shade featuring an Eastern-influenced print (“Luzon” from Thibaut’s Enchantment Collection) hangs above the window at the sink, bringing in personality and a color way of gray, black, white, and gold that ties in with the rest of the home. The large windowsill is the perfect spot for fresh picked Arkansas tomatoes and peaches. “This is my favorite part of the kitchen,” Malcolm says. “Arkansas produce framed with beautiful textiles against a marble backsplash—that’s as good as it gets.” Overall, the design of the Piazza kitchen keeps with Lamb’s signature style—casual elegance. “We used upscale finishes and details that meld seamlessly with the historic architecture,” Malcolm says. White recessed cabinets line the perimeter and contrast with the original wood floors which Turchi notes were restored by sanding and restaining. Marble beveled subway tile on the backsplash adds texture and interest and also ties in with the gray veining on the quartz countertops. “Respecting the historic nature of this home was paramount. Its beauty is due in large part to its simplicity,” Malcolm concludes.

In March 2016, Dawne and James “Tuffy” Hill faced a situation no homeowner wants to experience; a flood damaged the entire downstairs level of their rural Dumas home. “We had a foot of water that stood in our home for five days,” Dawne says. Knowing the damage was severe, they made the decision to fully gut and remodel the first floor of their home, and immediately called on designer Leslie Tetrev of North Little Rock’s Inside Effects. “I had worked with them on a remodel of their master bath and very recently completed their pool house, and I was eager to help as they started this renovation” Tetrev notes. In talking, the Hills and Tetrev realized the aftermath of the natural disaster had provided them with an opportunity to not only refresh the style of the kitchen but also make it more functional for the couple, who often host their children and grandchildren for family dinners as well as holidays. “Before, I had a tiny kitchen with

a small dining area,” Dawne explains. “Bringing down the wall between my formal dining room and the kitchen really opened the space. It has changed the way we use our house. We really use our [adjoining] dining room much more now.” The removal of the wall also prompted a shift in the direction of the island, allowing it to now run parallel to the perimeter cabinetry. The cooktop, which was previously located in the island, was also moved to the back wall and took the form of a combined range/double oven for a streamlined appearance. The sink was installed in the island to allow for ease of use when chopping vegetables or washing dishes. “When I stand at the sink, I can now see out the front of our home, which I love,” Dawne says. Aside from the layout, the space also received a style update. “I like timeless pieces and muted colors,” Dawne says. To create a customized look Tetrev employed a mix of materials, including

two countertops—marble and quartzite, three cabinetry stains in graduated hues (seen on the island, perimeter cabinets, and side wall installation), and two different backsplashes, a brick-look tile and a geometric marble and wood selection. “No one thing stands out, but rather it all works together,” Tetrev says. Additionally, the designer requested the home’s beams be highlighted. They used reclaimed wood from the family’s farm to complement the room’s other industrial-style materials, and the beams are repeated throughout the house for a concerted design. “These were important to me because they tie the home together, and the beam between the kitchen and dining area creates definition between the two spaces,” Tetrev adds. Although it can be difficult to see the good in any natural disaster, the Hills have certainly made the best of it by creating a space that is perfectly personalized to them while being spacious enough to accommodate their entire family. AN EL DORADO COUPLE REDEFINES THEIR BELOVED HOME’S KITCHEN TO SERVE THE NEXT GENERATION

A walk-in pantry offers an abundance of storage for dry and canned goods, leaving the cabinetry free to house serving ware and small appliances.

Two years ago, these El Dorado empty-nesters made the decision to move across town into a residence that formerly belonged to one set of their parents. As the home where the couple took their own children for family gatherings, the 1963 ranch-style house held a lot of memories and charm. However, they agreed it needed to be modernized for them, their three now-grown children (including At Home staffer Laura LaRue) and their spouses, as well as their grandchildren, all of who visit frequently.

The couple worked with architect and designer Richard Wharton on the renovation. “They took the project seriously, and since they have a history with the home we wanted to be respectful of the entire house,” Wharton says. In thinking about their needs, space became a high priority. Rather than remodeling the home’s existing kitchen (which is now an entry/laundry room), the homeowners created a new one that is all their own. “This space was non-existent; it was previously the backyard,” the homeowner says. “Our house is now in a U-shape with the kitchen looking out onto our patio and two wings on either end of the house. I love how open it is now, and because we are on the edge of town, the windows off the kitchen look out into a wooded area.” With the newly created space came plenty of room to accommodate the couple—who both love to be in the kitchen and cook—as well as their extended family. A 14-foot, L-shaped island is the centerpiece of the design, offering seating for six (the exact number of their grandchildren) as well as plenty of workspace for mixing cookie dough or chopping veggies for a salad. “I saw an island this color on the cover of At Home [in May 2015] and called Laura to see if she could help me track down the paint color,” the homeowner says. The color, Sherwin-Williams’ Cyberspace was the perfect mix of blue, gray, and black for the homeowner’s taste. Outside of this rich hue, “we stayed with a neutral, clean palette so that the people who fill the kitchen could be the focus,” Wharton says. Since both the husband and wife enjoy preparing meals, top-notch appliances were a must on their wish list. A commercial-style gas range and double ovens are a fixture against the room’s side wall, while a pot filler adds convenience. “We also added a warming drawer— something we did not have in our previous house,” the homeowner notes. “This has become one of my favorite things; you can put prepared dishes or takeout in there and then eat whenever you’re

ready,” she says of the popular addition. Lowmaintenance quartzite countertops cover the surfaces for added ease of use. The pair also enjoys entertaining friends. A separate wet bar area includes an icemaker and wine chiller, allowing guests to serve themselves without interfering with food preparation. The top-mounted, glass-front cabinetry keeps barware close at hand. The newly finished space is a treasure to both the couple and their family. “To see my parents complete this renovation and move in is pretty special for my whole family—especially since the home belonged to my grandparents,” LaRue says of her mom and dad’s new addition. “For all of the grandchildren to be able to grow up and play here (and run around that kitchen island), just adds to the countless memories that we all have made under this roof over the years,” she concludes.

Pieces from the homeowner’s collection of McCarty Pottery bring a happy dose of blue to the neutral backdrop.

traffic patterns Request: Eliminate the home’s compartmentalized spaces and give it a streamlined, cohesive flow. Result: Removing the expansive wall that separated the kitchen from the living area, created one large gathering space that allows the family to interact whether they are cooking dinner or watching a ball game. “Because they are so family oriented, an open floor plan was the first thing that came to mind when they started talking about how they envisioned being together and using the home,” Nixon says. Additionally, a furnace was relocated, allowing for a hallway to create an opening between the dining room and kitchen. The dining room was previously a dead-end room, but moving the furnace and creating the walkway brought it back into the flow of the home—making it easy to cook in the kitchen and entertain in the dining room.

A large island anchors the home’s centrally located kitchen. Delicate details, including the intricate design in the tone-on-tone backsplash and the trim along the barstools’ seats and backs, add flair while an abundance of countertops and cabinetry provides functional space for preparing meals and storing kitchen essentials.

What appear to be separate panels and drawers are actually part of the facade on this full-size door that opens to reveal a walk-in pantry.

Designed by Brittany Nixon Brun workable hub Request: Make the kitchen more functional for cooking and dining, and create more storage space. Result: A large island was installed to serve as a defined work and eating zone. Its extra-deep construction provides the couple with more storage for serving pieces and cookware. Because the kitchen had only one wall for upper cabinets, Nixon and Lindsey used the space wisely by bringing the cabinetry surrounding the cooktop all the way down to the countertops. “When we open a kitchen up to the living room we like to provide a space for everything behind doors to keep the counters uncluttered,” Lindsey notes. Large appliance garages hide a coffeemaker, toaster, and blender, while still keeping them close at hand. Perhaps the biggest change in terms of functionality was eliminating a home office that sat at one end of the kitchen. Nixon and Lindsey cleverly relocated the office’s necessities to the master bedroom and transformed this area into a concealed pantry that is accessible through what appear to be oversized cabinetry panel doors. This entry blends seamlessly with the panels on the full-size freezer and refrigerator, which are located on either side of the pantry entrance. Storage was also maximized here: “The pantry is really large, so it becomes the overflow of kitchen, but it remains very concealed,” Nixon notes. Incorporating a countertop inside the walk-in pantry also allows for a prep-work or baking station, adding to the convenience and efficient use of space.
