Travis and Kendra On the day after Christmas, Travis Fox gave Kendra Watts one last gift. In Kendra’s words, Travis asked “the easiest question ever.” And of course, she said “Yes!”

There’s nothing quite as enchanting as a happy bride. At Weddings in Arkansas we get the pleasure of reading submission notes from these brides and seeing numerous pictures of the celebrations that they enjoyed. For us, it is the smiles, laughter, and occasional tears of joy, that make the magazine worthwhile. This issue is no exception, we have filled our pages with six beautiful weddings from brides and grooms across Arkansas, including one couple who took the plunge together twice—once in Little Rock and again in the groom’s native France. Wherever the location, we are certain that each couple’s happiness will bring a smile to your face and, perhaps, even inspire a few ideas for your own big day. In addition to the merriment shared in these real weddings, our inspiration section is equally blissful. Our fashion feature showcases everything from a stunning, voluminous striped gown by Hayley Paige to a bohemianinspired dress by Maggie Sottero. Rich hues reign in our floral design section where Tanarah Luxe Floral and Tipton & Hurst both offer their takes on modern bridal bouquets and centerpieces. Finally, what could be happier than a day at a carnival? A team of local vendors united their talents for a colorful, flirtatious, and just plain fun wedding photo shoot at Burns Park. I think you’ll agree their treat-inspired set up is a sweet way to say, “I do.” If you’re a bride-to-be or helping to plan a wedding, I hope the resources and ideas in this issue will inspire you to create a day—make that a lifetime—of happiness.

Best Wishes!

“We just wanted to do something fun,” Tanarah Haynie, owner of Tanarah Luxe Floral, says of this mid-century-meets-colorful-carnival inspirational wedding setup. “We’ve seen a lot of organic, very serious inspiration on Pinterest and we wanted to have something that was poppy and more playful.” With this thought in mind, the team of vendors (listed in the resource section) chose the carnival area at Burns Park as the backdrop for the day. Its vivid, whimsical feel ties in with the floral design, invitations, cake, and even the tulip table and red crystal-inspired stools. The park also allowed plenty of space for the Loblolly Creamery ice cream truck to park and serve up a signature berry sorbet. The bride and groom’s attire was equally playful. “I wanted something that had a 60s vibe and was reminiscent of a young Marilyn Monroe for the bride’s dress,” event designer Rachel Haynes says. “I chose a fun and flirty throwback dress to carry the mid-century look throughout the shoot.” In the same fashion, a suit and bowtie ensemble, rather than a tuxedo, is a more casual approach to the groom’s attire.

COLOR WHEEL “Peonies and garden roses are the flower du jour. They have a great color schematic and luscious blooms, which was important because they needed to be in scale with the lollipops we added,” Haynie says of the raised floral arrangement on the white tulip table. “Someone might not necessarily copy this exact look for their wedding but this is all meant to inspire. It could be fun for a bridesmaids’ luncheon or shower or any other party,” she adds.

Chocolate cupcakes made by Natalie Madison Artisan Cakes give the option for individual treats. A three-tiered cake—also created by Natalie Madison Artisan Cakes—echoes the day’s colorful mid-century vibe with red, white, and blue embellishments and a simple bridal flower with netting. Carnival-inspired invitations set the tone with guests before they arrive at the celebration. Facing page: In the bride’s bouquet, licorice sticks and round suckers blend with pink stock, zinnias, carnations, and calla lilies, while a group of Giant Pixy Stix® combine to create a holder at the base.

A GROUP OF LOCAL VENDORS, LED BY PHOTOGRAPHER AMY CARPER, NAVIGATES THE WATERS OF A EUROPEAN WEDDING TO OFFER ARKANSAS BRIDES THE OPTION TO MARRY ABROAD PHOTOGRAPHY: CARPER CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

Fall/Winter 2016 | weddingsinarkansas.com 21

INSPIRATION

You probably recognize A my Carper’s name from her work as a nationally renowned wedding and lifestyle photographer. The Arkansan has made a name for herself in the industry and is now offering her services on an international level—in Italy to be exact. While vacationing in Canelli—in the Italian Province of Asti—at Agriturismo Acino d’Oro with her husband and children, an enticing opportunity presented itself to Carper. “The owners of the estate were interested in hosting weddings—specifically for Americans,” Carper says. Upon learning of her profession, they hit it off and began a relationship that would lead Carper—along with fellow Arkansans Tanarah Haynie of Tanarah Luxe Floral and photographer Stacy Kinzler—back to Italy a short time later to create a dreamy wedding scene. “We really went back to work out the logistics for brides,” Carper says. She now knows how to troubleshoot for a wedding abroad and exactly what brides and grooms need—from how to transport the dress to arranging accommodations for guests— in order to say “I do” abroad. To give engaged couples a vision of what they might expect when booking an Italian destination wedding with her, the group—she, Haynie, and Kinzler, who served as the model bride—created and photographed a fictional wedding. The images featured here give brides-to-be an idea of the picturesque setting that awaits. Ceremonies can take place on site at the Agriturismo Acino d’Oro villa or at a nearby interdenominational church. Dinner and a reception at the villa can follow. Carper notes that the estate, which features vineyards just below the terrace, is located in such a beautiful setting that the décor doesn’t have to be fussy. Instead, the day can be about family, friends, and the celebration of marriage in a picturesque area. Carper envisions wedding guests arriving to a welcome party on their first day, enjoying an outing to nearby Milan or Turin on day two, taking part in rehearsal festivities on day three, and finally enjoying the wedding on the following day. “This is just a beautiful setting for someone who wants an intimate ceremony and reception,” she adds. Carper is currently looking into additional sites in Italy and other regions abroad. CAT’S THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE DAY Soft, Inviting & Personal

Bill

FAMILY TRADITION Cat and Bill were married in the same church, Grace Presbyterian, were her parents said their vows. She also notes that her maternal grandparents were founding members of the church, which made the venue even more special.

Graceful Exit With approximately 200 well-wishers on hand for the big day, Cat and Bill made their grand exit through a tunnel of swirling ribbons.

WOOD

FIRST DANCE SONG

Well Documented Cat and Bill advise newly engaged couples to make a video diary. “The process goes so quickly so it’s nice to have something to look back on and remember the emotions,” she says.

JANUARY 23, 2016 LITTLE ROCK

"It’s Your Love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

HELPING HAND Cat says the pair would have been lost without her mother, Elizabeth Garland. “We never had a wedding planner, but she seemed to always have the answers,” she notes.

Making a Menu Cat advises engaged couples not to fret over the menu for their celebration. “Honestly, I barely remember what we ate…and I think there is a lesson in that. Don’t worry too much about the menu for your special night. It’s just one meal; in the course of a lifetime, it’s no big deal,” she says.

A Cliff Hanger After dating for six years, Bill took his high school sweetheart, Cat, to the bluffs near North Little Rock’s Emerald Park to propose. Cat recalls almost turning around because she was still wearing heels after a long day at work. “We finally made it to the cliff’s edge where we took pictures of the beautiful Arkansas landscape,” she says. “I said it was about time to go, turned around, and he was on one knee. I was completely surprised and relieved I didn’t fall off the bluffs in excitement.”

BELOVED OFFICIANT

Kristen KING

&

A Very Special Delivery Grant, who is a dentist, was working to set up dental clinics in unreached areas of Indonesia. Kristen was planning to join him for three weeks of the summer to help. While he was there, Grant decided the time had come for him to propose. After asking for her parents’ permission, he worked with his mom to formulate a plan. Grant’s mother created a care package for him and asked that Kristen get it to him safely. Unbeknownst to Kristen, the package contained Grant’s great-grandmother’s diamond ring. She packed it away in her checked luggage. However, the bag did not arrive with Kristen’s flight. “Grant was secretly freaking out,” she says. Luckily, she received her luggage the following day—and Grant got his care package.

SURPRISE PARTY PROPOSAL During their time in Indonesia, the couple worked hard for two weeks. One evening Grant told Kristen they were invited to a neighbor’s home for dinner. On the walk there, he began to talk about their future and then proposed. “Of course, I said ‘yes,’ and I look around and somehow we have been surrounded by many cheering people of the village. They threw us our first engagement party, full of good food and live music,” she says.

Grant

DAVIDSON

“The man that officiated our ceremony, Kyle Cromwell, is someone that we love dearly and have grown to respect immensely,” Kristen says. Cromwell started the organization that invited Grant and Kristen to go to Indonesia. “Kyle and his wife Leigh are two of the bravest, funniest, loving, encouraging people that we have come to know in life. We feel honored that they were such an important part of our wedding day.”

Naturally Artistic Kristen notes that the floral design for the day was “whimsical and romantic.” No two arrangements were alike and moss seemed to flow from table to table, giving the reception a true-tonature feel.

SWEET SENTIMENT

APRIL 30, 2016 BENTONVILLE

On their wedding day, Grant gave Kristen a Field Notes journal filled with entries that dated back to his time in Indonesia. It included his thoughts when he decided to propose, the days prior to his proposal, and notes throughout the engagement. “It is my favorite gift that he has ever given me,” Kristen says.

Kristen on How She Envisioned the Day “Honestly, I was not the girl that envisioned every detail of her wedding. I just knew that I wanted to walk down that aisle and be looking at someone that I knew was the right one. I knew that I needed to have a peace in my heart that he was the right man. The rest of the details came together largely due to my wedding planner, mother, and mother-in-law.”

GARDEN-FRESH PICKS

Meridith WHITE

&

HOLIDAY HAPPINESS Pierre proposed to Meridith on Christmas morning in December of 2013. He asked for help from their daughter to give her the ring.

Double Ceremony Pierre is from Bergerac, France and Meridith is originally from Pine Bluff. The pair wanted both an American wedding in Arkansas as well as one in France. They were married in June of 2014 at their home in Little Rock and two years to the day later, they tied the knot in France. “We knew that we wanted to wait a little while before the ceremony in France, so we decided on June 2016. The date itself, June 11, 2016, was chosen because it is a palindrome,” Meridith says.

FAMILY PIECES Meridith’s grandmother and great-grandmother played a large role in her “something old, borrowed, and blue.” The jewel on the belt of her bridal gown was originally part of a favorite slide bracelet that belonged to her late grandmother. Its aquamarine stone was the perfect hint of blue for luck. She also wore her late greatgrandmother’s wedding ring, which she had given to Meridith before she passed away.

Pierre RANOUIL

French Flair

The floral design was kept simple in an effort to highlight the beautiful backdrop for the ceremony and reception. “I chose what was in season,” Meridith notes. An arch made of curly willow branches and hydrangea was constructed for the ceremony. White hydrangea and eucalyptus were used for the attendants’ bouquets, while the bride’s held pale pink peonies. The reception tables were dotted with the same stems composed in low vases in an effort to encourage conversation. “French weddings are simpler in regard to décor,” Meridith notes. “The resources are put toward the food, wine, and dancing instead!”

Long-Distance Planning Meridith’s in-laws, who live near the ceremony and reception site, helped tremendously with the planning. “Since we live over 4,000 miles from the ceremony location, I depended on them for details such as choosing the florist, tasting and finalizing the menu, and so much more,” the bride says.

GUESTS FROM AFAR Close to 100 guests—including the couple’s young daughters, Isabella and Emma (seen below)— shared in the joyous occasion. Pierre’s family traveled from their nearby home, while many friends and family members made the voyage from the U.S. to France to see the couple exchange vows in the 17th century château.

It is French tradition for a wedding to be a lengthy, much-enjoyed affair. After Meridith and Pierre’s ceremony, which took place at Château les Merles, a reception with champagne, punch, and light hors d’oeuvres was held. Following this, guests were welcomed into the courtyard of the château for dinner. “A traditional French dinner begins late and ends very late—this was no exception,” Meridith says. Guests were treated to a six-course meal, each with its own wine pairing. Games and a lively round of karaoke took place in between the courses. In addition, all of the guests were invited back to the château the next morning for a brunch.

CLASS ACTS Julie and Braden first met at Arkansas Tech University where they had the same majors (history and political science) and minor (speech communication). They had numerous classes together but they first started talking in a judicial process class, where Braden claims Julie came in and sat next to him. She, however, remembers him coming in to sit beside her. Either way, they struck up a conversation and began dating in January of 2010.

Easter Proposal

Julie says that she and Braden wanted their wedding date to be memorable and feel right, rather than choosing a random day. They opted to go with May 21. Her grandparents, Henry and Betty Paladino, were married on October 21, 1951 in the same church where Julie and Braden would exchange vows, so the 21st felt like a natural fit for them.

Braden proposed to Julie on April 5, 2015—Easter Sunday. The couple had gone to mass with Julie’s family. After the service they made their way out to the front of the church where Julie asked Braden if he thought this church (St. Joseph in Center Ridge) would be an option for the two to be married in one day. He replied, “there’s only one way to find out” and got down on one knee to propose. “Braden knew that when the day would come for him to ask me, that I would want it to be around my family, and at a place that was special to me. It was perfect,” Julie says.

Peonies, garden roses, tulips, seeded eucalyptus, and white stock.

Heritage Meal Julie paid careful attention to the fare her guests would dine on following the ceremony. “The menu for the reception was important to me and a way I could showcase my Italian heritage,” she says. They served homemade spaghetti and smoked sausage, along with salad, sauerkraut, corn, and bread.

TWICE AS FUN The couple made two distinguished exits as man and wife. For the first, following the ceremony, they drove away in a 1948 Ford two-door deluxe coupe. After the reception, they made their escape in a limousine.

A Meaningful Date

FLORAL SELECTIONS

“Deciding to use a professional planner was one of the most important decisions that was made,” Julie says. “I wanted to be able to work with someone who saw my vision for the special day. From designing to coordinating the wedding day, Natalie [of Natalie Scott Events] worked with me and my family to make it all happen. She was so helpful and made the entire process go with ease.”

PERSONALIZED VOWS Gretchen and Tyler chose to write and say their own individualized vows during the ceremony. “We went back and forth on this decision but ultimately decided we wanted to make our vows personal and unique to us as a couple,” Gretchen says.

Triple-Flavored Confection Lemon was the couple’s first choice for cake flavor; however, in an effort to please their guests they also included almond and chocolate layers in their wedding cake.

WEDDING DAY MUST-HAVE “We had to get married outside! We had friends and family warn us about possible weather conditions but the weather was perfect on our wedding day,” Gretchen says.

Something Borrowed Gretchen’s mother gave her a lace handkerchief to carry around her bouquet. Her mother and a group of her best friends from college all carried it in their weddings, and since then the tradition has continued with their daughters now using it.

GRETCHEN’S ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE THEIR WEDDING DAY STYLE: Whimsical!

Favorite Memory of the Day She Said: “At the end of the reception the guests all filed out to get ready for our send off. We stayed behind and danced to one of my favorite songs, ‘At Last’ by Etta James. From the dance floor we were able to truly embrace all of the decorations and floral. It was truly an incredible night!” He Said: “My favorite memory was watching Gretchen arrive in the horsedrawn carriage and begin walking down the aisle. I had not yet seen her in her wedding dress, and it was stunning. She looked like such a princess tying the entire fairy tale scene together for an amazing night.”

The Ultimate Hunt Tyler sent Gretchen on a scavenger hunt the day before the two were set to graduate from Ouachita Baptist University. The hunt included numerous places around the campus that were important to the couple, and family and friends were at each stop along the way to hand Gretchen her next clue. At the end, she was surrounded by loved ones reading a fairytale that Tyler had written for the two of them. It was then that Tyler came in and proposed to her.

DOUBLE DATE

Nancy CHU

&

A BLESSING AND AN ENGAGEMENT Nancy and Allen had been looking for engagement rings, and she mentioned to him that her parents are “old school, and if he was going to marry her, he might want to talk to Papa Chu.” One night after work, the couple visited her parents and got a blessing from both Nancy’s dad and her mom. After returning home, Allen was still on a high and couldn’t wait to ask Nancy. He proposed to her in her kitchen, and with tears streaming down her face, she said, “Yes.”

Nancy and Allen wanted to be married in the fall; however, they are both huge Razorback football fans and didn’t want their ceremony to take place on a game day. “Looking for a bye weekend, October 17th just happened to be the only open date. We looked at each other and gave that stare that we share. Laughter busted out because it just happens to be my birthday,” Nancy says.

Worth the Wait Nancy and Allen dated off and on for the better part of 10 years. The couple notes that something kept bringing them back together when they were apart.

CULTURAL CELEBRATION “We wanted to incorporate both of our cultures, so it was more of an Asian-fusion blend,” Nancy says of the wedding’s overall style and design. “With my aging parents, I wanted to include more Asian traditions and styles for my family. I am full-bloodied Chinese and the last of my sisters to get married. Red is a popular color [in Chinese tradition], so I used it with my Asian phoenix and dragon ‘cheongsam’ or dress that I changed into after the daddy-daughter dance.”

Family Meeting Fantastic Florals Tipton & Hurst took a bold approach to the day’s floral design, which also included an Asian flair. Orange, red, and burgundy flowers comprised the bride’s bouquet, while red Asian orchids in tall vases lined the petal-covered ceremony aisle. The theme of brightly hued flowers—in both high and low vases— carried through to the reception.

Nancy and Allen met through his sister, Dana. Nancy and Dana attended the same church and lived just two houses from one another. She introduced the pair. “We are not sure who made the first move [me or Allen] to ask or give out a telephone number, but we’re so glad one of us did,” Nancy says.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FIRST DANCE SONG “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

Nancy and Allen exited their reception through a line of guests who were holding sparklers to light the way.
