We have a saying at our house: “Teamwork makes the dream work.” It’s a phrase that’s usually pulled out when I want help unloading the dishwasher or when my husband needs a hand folding the laundry. And, while it may be a tad cheesy, it’s true and reminds us that everything we do is a joint effort. When I sat down to think about this issue, the phrase immediately came to mind. While I may get the pleasure of sharing this space with you, it is the work of so many that makes each issue inspirational. First—and perhaps foremost—it starts with the couples featured in the Real Weddings section. Each of these brides (and grooms!) spent countless hours planning everything from the stems in their bouquets to the shape and design of their wedding cake (check out the towering creation topped with hydrangea blooms on page 48). After the planning process, numerous vendors came together as a “dream team” to make everything look beautiful and run smoothly for each and every one of these celebrations. We couldn’t be more thrilled to feature their big days, and we are immensely grateful for the talented photographers who used their trained eyes to capture every flourish, tear, kiss, dance, and farewell exit. Last but not least, it is our own in-house team who brings the book to life. Whether the task is researching the latest trends to share, styling a wedding veil so it will fly effortlessly in the wind, writing the couples’ stories or pulling all the pieces together for a polished end result on the page, each member works together to offer ideas and inspiration that will, hopefully, help you to achieve your own dream day.

The Feast Peter and Katya made their guests’ enjoyment of the reception a top priority, particularly when it came to the food. They offered a buffet of crowd-pleasing options, including fried pickles, miniature crab cakes, shrimp cocktail shooters, mozzarella-andbasil-stuffed tomatoes, pulled pork sandwiches on rolls, chicken skewers, stuffed mushrooms, a mac n’ cheese bar, pesto tortellini skewers, and miniature corn dogs. For the wedding cake, Katya chose strawberry cake for the largest tier, vanilla for the middle tier, and lemon cake with raspberry curd filling for the smallest. The groom’s chocolate cake was made in the shape of a Razorback.

Katya describes her personal style as “simplicity with a statement,” and she used this mantra as the inspiration for the décor at the ceremony and reception.
A Working Relationship
“When it was time for Katya to walk down the aisle, I remember the huge grin on her face. She was the happiest I have ever seen her, and it just made me feel so at ease knowing that I was marrying my best friend.”
— Peter Love Lights When it was time for the pair to depart, their 175 guests lit wish lanterns in a symbolic display of their support of the couple’s bright future.
Outtakes As the couple were taking their vows, the officiant dropped Peter’s ring. It bounced once before the bride did what Peter calls a “one-arm, shortstop swoop and grab” move to retrieve it. Friendly laughter from guests made the moment especially memorable and lighthearted.
The Honeymoon Katya and Peter waited three weeks after the wedding—a much-needed recuperation period according to Katya—before traveling to Italy for their honeymoon. They visited Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, the Isle of Capri, and the Amalfi coast.
Magical Monday After six-and-a-half years of dating, the couple knew—and had discussed—that they eventually wanted to marry and become partners for life. However, Katya was completely surprised by Peter’s proposal one relaxed Monday evening, while they were busy cooking dinner and unwinding from the workday. “I was tending to the stove,” Katya says, “and Peter had gotten down on one knee behind me.” When she turned around, and she saw him kneeling with the jewelry box in his hand, she was completely flustered. Not until he offered his heartfelt proposal did things come back into focus, and she said, “Yes,” without hesitation.
Katya and Peter were coworkers and friends for four months before a mutual friend told Katya that Peter had a secret crush on her. Excited to see if their friendship could evolve into something more, Katya gave him her phone number, and soon they were making plans for a first date.
Meaningful Accents Personalized accessories made the bride and groom’s attire on the wedding day uniquely meaningful. Peter’s cummerbund had whimsical golf-themed details, a nod to one of his favorite hobbies. As her “something new,” Katya wore a pair of earrings given to her as a gift from her grandparents, and her veil was one that her aunt and cousins had also worn for their nuptials.

A Certain Ring to It Danielle’s engagement ring/wedding band were her maternal grandmother’s. Her grandfather proposed to her grandmother with it in 1957. A few years later, her grandmother misplaced the ring and eventually a new one was purchased. After time went by, they were unpacking boxes after moving, pulled out a baseball glove to play catch, and—much to their surprise—the ring fell out of the glove! Danielle has loved the ring since she was a little girl. She shared this with Tyler, who asked her grandmother for the ring a few months before his proposal. Her grandparents had the baseball glove where the ring was found bronzed, and it was displayed at Danielle and Tyler’s reception, alongside a picture of her grandfather.

“Most importantly, I wanted everything to be easy and enjoyable. And I wanted to have my closest friends and family with us!” Honeymoon Destination ~ Iceland “We rented a car and drove around the country, staying in a different town each night. It was absolutely beautiful and we are already dying to go back,” Danielle says.

Danielle and Tyler had a caricature artist on hand to entertain guests with handdrawn portraits.
Each place setting used for the celebratory dinner featured a different vintage floral plate. Some of these belonged to Danielle’s grandmother, while others were purchased by her mother on treasure hunts to vintage stores and sales.
Family Affair The bride’s cousin, who is a graphic designer, created the couple’s invitations and programs for the big day, and her uncle served as the officiant for the ceremony. In addition, many of her family’s personal mementos were used in the décor. Her stepfather even custombuilt the head tables for the bridal party.

Downhome Welcome The sounds of Lonesome Road, a bluegrass band assembled from Arkansas and Tyler’s home state of Missouri, welcomed guests during the reception.
Fairytale Meeting Danielle and Tyler met in Orlando, Florida. Tyler had gone to college there and stayed in the area after graduation, while Danielle moved to the city for the Disney College Program. During her transition to Orlando, a mutual friend of the two connected them thinking Tyler might be able to show Danielle around the area. They met for a round of putt-putt and dinner, and the rest is history.

Lauren’s “cookie obsession” made warm cookies a must, in addition to other sweets.
Art Scene Lauren’s vision for her wedding day was of a “massive garden party” in a setting with a contemporary aesthetic. Her major in college was art history, so Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art was a setting that was not only visually striking but also resonated with her interests. Since she and Preston both favor the look of modern design, they worked with wedding planner Todd Bagwell to infuse every aspect of the event with a linear, architectural theme.

Lauren’s Advice for Brides-to-Be: “Hire a wedding planner, especially if you know your wedding will have a lot of moving parts. You still have creative direction over your big day, but all the boring details are sorted out by someone else who can keep you on pace and on budget. You might even make a lifelong friend out of it.”
Mother Knows Best Lauren’s mother was the one who she says “choreographed” her first encounter with Preston. “She met [him] through her cousin, for whom Preston worked at the time, and she was determined to pair him up with one of her three daughters,” Lauren recalls. A mother’s intuition is often spot-on, and the meeting sparked a threeyear courtship.

Old/New/Borrowed/Blue During the ceremony, Lauren wore her great-grandmother’s sapphire ring—a treasure both borrowed and blue—that her mother also wore in her own wedding. Preston’s mother took cuttings from Lauren’s mother’s wedding dress to make a handkerchief, which Lauren tucked into the pocket of her wedding dress and carried with her throughout the day.
A Fiery Proposal One weekend, the couple set out for the bride’s family’s lake house on Lake Ouachita to enjoy a quiet fall retreat. As Lauren prepared dinner the first evening, Preston turned his attention to building a fire in the fireplace. It wasn’t as easy as he had hoped, but Lauren remembers how, “sweating and winded, he finally managed to create a perfect, roaring fire.” Preston called Lauren over to appreciate his handiwork—which she did, though she was eager to return to her cooking—and at that moment he got down on one knee and proposed.
Inspired Cake For the cake, taste was top priority, but the couple also wanted it to fit visually with the surroundings. As inspiration, Lauren presented an abstract, copper Christmas ornament from Crystal Bridges to the cake maker, and the result was a striking, sleek, seven-tiered confection.

After driving around to look at Christmas lights, the couple was at Kendal’s parents’ home when he asked Blair to come outside so he could talk with her. “I walked out in the backyard by the pool and he said, ‘I wanted you to come outside so I could show you the last lights of the night,’” Blair recounts. When Kendal turned on the lights the words “will you marry me?” were spelled out along a wooden fence.

Planning Team Waving Goodbye As the couple exited the front steps of the Junior League Building in downtown Little Rock, well-wishers waved burlap flags personalized with the pair’s initials.
Numerous individuals worked to make the day a success. Debra Brown, a family friend, coordinated the wedding and also made the couple’s cakes. In addition, the bride’s sister, Brittany, who the bride says is “very creative and talented” pitched in to help. Finally, Kelly Efrid of Efrid Flower Events designed what Blair refers to as “a magical day for us.”

The Engagement One evening the couple attended a performance of Bailey’s favorite show in Branson, “Six.” They arrived a bit late and were escorted to front row seats. The performers called them onstage to slow dance during a love song as part of the show, and while they were dancing Robert dropped to one knee. The audience cheered wildly after Bailey said “Yes,” and to her complete surprise four rows of friends and family were there to witness and celebrate the proposal.
Fairytale Wedding Bailey wanted her wedding day to feel like a fairytale, right down to her fivelayer, custom tulle veil.
personal reflection Bailey and Rob agree on their favorite moment of the day: the first look. Before their ceremony the bride and groom had a moment alone to focus and to exchange gifts. Robert’s gift to Bailey was a canary diamond ring, intended as a gift for their future daughter on her own wedding day.
Honoring Family It was important to the couple to authentically weave the cultures of their ancestors throughout their special day. As a symbol of his Croatian heritage, Rob’s grandmother’s rosary beads were incorporated into the ceremony.

The icing was then airbrushed to give the appearance of a tree with the couple’s initials and a heart “carved” in the middle. The whimsical cake was a nod to the pastoral setting and complemented the rest of the wedding’s décor. For the groom’s cake, Zane wanted to pay tribute to his family’s roots in Louisiana and his love of Louisiana State University. The bowl-shaped, chocolate cake with the LSU emblem was “filled” with crawfish and corn—all crafted from fondant.

Planning From Afar Since they were planning a destination wedding, Seanne and her mother knew it would be even more beneficial to have the advice and expertise of a wedding planner. They worked with Shawna Young of Young Designs. “Shawna was wonderful!! She helped my mother and I plan everything. Since, it was a destination wedding, we had to plan almost everything before we got there—which can be a challenge. Shawna was a great help before and during the wedding,” Seanne says. Shawna was also able to meet with the resort’s wedding planner to ensure all parties were on the same page and that the day would flow smoothly.

A Special Christmas Present Tyler drove from his house in Springdale to Rector on Christmas morning and proposed while Seanne’s family was opening presents. Seanne had always said that she wanted her mom to be there, so Tyler felt that Christmas was a perfect time. He had just graduated from law school, and Seanne had just completed her counseling degree from John Brown University.

The couple envisioned a small beach wedding for their nuptials, and Seanne wanted to be married in Cabo. She and Tyler searched until they found an all-inclusive resort they knew their family and friends would love as much as they did. Having stayed at a Secrets Resort previously, they felt that Secrets Marquis Los Cabos would be a fun and accommodating location for the wedding as well as their guests’ vacation. They chose a summer date, in hopes their 45 attendees would be out of school and ready for a tropical getaway to celebrate their vows. “We really wanted our wedding to be laid back and be a vacation. That is exactly what it was. We really wanted to have fun and enjoy the week,” Seanne adds.

I have now turned my documentary story-telling skills toward weddings. I was born and raised in New Orleans and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1995 with a degree specializing in photojournalism. WHAT ARE THE TOP CONSIDERATIONS TO MAKE WHEN CHOOSING A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER? In my opinion, it’s very important that all couples choose their photographers based on their own style preference, not just on price. There are a lot of talented wedding photographers in Arkansas, but their photography styles vary widely, ranging from traditional and literal to documentary and spontaneous. As a couple, you want your photographer to fit your personality. IN TERMS OF MEETINGS AND THE BIG DAY, WHAT SHOULD A COUPLE EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU? Spending time with your photographer BEFORE the wedding on these photo sessions is so very important. I work together closely with my clients to schedule their engagement and bridal sessions. I love to see how my couples interact with each other (and with me) in front of the camera. I try to make them as comfortable and relaxed as possible so their true personality can shine. For the wedding day itself, we meet about two weeks before the wedding to

finalize the timeline and to discuss their list of photos they want for family formals. I let the day flow as naturally as possible without interruption while working to keep everyone on time and on schedule. WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OR APPROACH TO WEDDING DAY PHOTOGRAPHY? My style is to provide my clients with natural and real wedding day photos. They don’t want anything that’s overly posed or contrived. They want real moments. Working for a newspaper has taught me one very important lesson—be ready before the moment happens. Because with a wedding—your wedding—there are no doovers. Sure, you can recreate just about any moment, but it’s just not the same. WHAT DO YOU FEEL SETS YOUR WORK OR BUSINESS APART? In addition to my photojournalistic style, I strive to set a high bar for customer service. As a consumer, I hate feeling blown off, brushed aside, or made to feel less than important. We try to encourage everyone to have a gentle cleanser, eye cream, moisturizer, and sun protection as part of their basic everyday routine. WHAT CONSIDERATIONS SHOULD A BRIDE MAKE WHEN IT COMES TO HER WEDDING DAY BEAUTY LOOK? Makeup is part of your style & fashion! These questions are among the first we ask: What does your dress look like? How are you going to wear your hair? What are the colors of the wedding? When brides are very conceptual about their wedding we really like to collaborate with what type of makeup works into their concept. For example, if someone wants to look bohemian, we suggest soft smoky eyes, pink cheeks, and soft pink lips. WHAT TYPES OF LOOKS TEND TO BE THE MOST POPULAR FOR TODAY’S BRIDES?
