It’s no secret that most little girls love to dream about their wedding day. From the flowers to the cake (strawberry, please!), the dress, and the groom, countless hours are spent prospecting the details of the day. However, when your future husband gets down on one knee and opens a small ring box everything suddenly becomes very real—dreams become plans. I remember well the day my husband proposed and all the joy that came along with that moment. However, as the days passed, my attention turned to a larger box—one that my mom and I filled with inspiration clippings, appointment notes, and other wedding planning essentials. A sweet local photographer had given us the box as a part of her presentation, and we thought it was the perfect way to keep ourselves organized. I’m sure people thought we were crazy each time we brought out that brimming box, but it served us well. Now, a year and a half later, my husband and I have yet another box—a wooden one made by his great-grandfather that is tucked away in the back of our closet. The contents of this box—much like the one he offered on the day he proposed—mean the world to us. Inside, we’ve placed concert tickets, funny notes from each other, and even the receipt from our very first date. It’s stuff that anyone else would consider trash, not treasure; but these little scraps of memories are an important part of what makes us a couple. They serve as a reminder of the times we’ve shared and all the fun we’ve had along the way. As I write this, the box is already overflowing with these “pieces of us,” so much so that the lid will barely close. However, I have no plans to stop saving these special markers. Worse case scenario? We’ll build a new box. While you may need a box (or two) of your own to hold all of the ideas for your dream wedding, I hope the details and stories in this issue will be a part of the inspiration you need to plan and create memories of your special day.

When interior designer

Lee Anne Henry, owner of Whiteline Designs, and her husband Mark exchanged vows at their Fayetteville home several years ago, guests raved about the venue. Not only was it a meaningful choice for them, but it also had the all makings of a perfect wedding locale for any discerning couple. Lee Anne and Mark welcomed several other close friends and family to use the home—known as Autumn Ridge Plantation—as the location for their weddings, and before long they were thinking, “Why not offer our home as a wedding venue?” says Lee Anne. “We wanted everyone to be able to experience its beauty,” she adds. Located on ten acres on the edge of Fayetteville, Autumn Ridge Plantation offers a sweeping view of the Boston Mountains from the home’s back lawn, while the façade and interior architecture were inspired by plantations built in Natchez, Mississippi. Couples that select the venue have full use of the grounds as well as access to a newly designed bridal suite and groom’s quarters both located inside the home. While couples may choose their preferred vendors to hire, Lee Anne and Mark worked with a talented team of friends and industry experts to bring their own vision of an ideal day at Autumn Ridge Plantation to life for our pages.

Jenn Bowman & Andy Tatum THE DATE March 22, 2014 HOW THEY MET Jenn and Andy met while working together at Starbucks. After a year of working side by side, Andy switched jobs and the friendship between the two became stronger and led to two and a half years of dating. THE ENGAGEMENT In July 2013, the couple took a trip to Jenn’s home state of Maine. Andy mentioned that he wanted to see a lighthouse on their trip, so they went to Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. They went up into the lighthouse and asked a lady to take a few pictures of them. Andy asked for one more picture, and then got on one knee. He took a sock out of his pocket—where he had been hiding the ring during their trip— and asked Jenn to marry him. “When he began to ask me, I just remember shaking my head ‘yes’ and forgetting to speak. It was a perfect moment,” Jenn says. THE PLANS The couple decided to marry in Northwest Arkansas since Andy is from Rogers and they knew they would be living in the area after they were married. While Jenn took the reins when it came to planning, she relied on the support of her mother and Andy’s mom, who was familiar with the local venues and helped the two to find a place for the ceremony and reception. “I happened across a photo of The Garden Room, and we decided on it once we toured,” says Jenn of the Fayetteville venue located on Dickson Street. From there, the couple set out to create a day that was intimate, rustic, classic, and, above all, a true reflection of them as a couple. They used Andy’s antique and vintage book collection as well as decorative pieces from their shelves at home to give their wedding setup a personal feel. THE BIG DAY Jenn surprised Andy by walking down the aisle to “Falling Slowly” by The Frames / Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, a song that was meaningful to both of them. “It’s beautiful and talks about falling in love slowly, which was us,” Jenn says. “I chose the song and didn’t tell him. I wanted it to be a good surprise, and it was.” Andy now says it was one of his favorite memories of the day. Against a backdrop that Jenn planned and sewed herself along with altar arrangements of spring flowers in birdcages, which reminded Jenn of her mother and grandmother, the couple exchanged the vows they wrote for each other. After the ceremony, guests toasted the couple with Andy’s favorite local beer, Core Brewing Company's ESB, while sampling a variety of artfully made berry and citrus pies (Jenn’s favorite), tarts, and cheesecakes. When it was time to leave, guests took home magnets with a block print of the couple and salted caramels that Jenn and her mom made from scratch. Fall 2014 | weddingsinarkansas.com 19

Haley Stobaugh & Andreas Pfeffer THE DATE May 24, 2014 HOW THEY MET Haley and Andreas met through a mutual friend and dated for three years before becoming engaged. THE ENGAGEMENT The couple has a tradition of going to Garvan Woodland Gardens each Christmas to see the light displays. They took their annual trip on December 18, 2013, and it turned out to be the most special one yet. Andreas had asked Haley’s parents to accompany them. While they were walking through the lights, her parents became separated from them but they continued on the tour. Andreas asked a lady to take their picture in front of one of the displays and told her he was going to ask Haley a question. When he got back to Haley’s side, he got down on one knee and proposed. Fortunately, the lady taking the photo switched the mode to video and captured the entire proposal for the couple. THE PLANS Haley and Andreas knew they wanted an outdoor wedding and chose May for its spring temperatures. Haley already had the perfect venue in mind—her grandmother’s property at Win-Meadow Lake in Greenbrier. “Even before Andreas and I met, I thought it would be the perfect place to get married. After we got engaged he loved the idea of having it there as much as I did,” she says. When it came to inspiration, Haley says, “I knew I wanted it to be whimsical with vines and hues of green and blue, but at the same time classic with a lot of white flowers and linens.” The couple also didn’t want anything overly ostentatious, so they created an atmosphere that was more laid-back and in tune with their personal tastes. When it came to the floral selections, Haley says she put total trust in Jessica Zimmerman of Conway’s Zimmerman (formerly A Southern Tradition). “I basically told Jessica and her team my color scheme and showed them a few pictures and they designed the entire thing. I couldn’t have been happier.” THE BIG DAY Haley and Andreas exchanged vows on the scenic property with 100 guests on hand to celebrate with them. Next, they headed to Conway’s The Brick Room to dine on an Italian buffet and tiered wedding cake, which featured red velvet, Italian cream, and traditional white layers. Rather than a traditional groom’s cake, Andreas opted for a cheesecake bar, which included a selection of sauces, nuts, and fruit for toppings. The couple shared their final dance of the night to John Legend’s “All of Me” before their guests gathered at the front entrance to shoot confetti as they exited the reception and headed to Punta Cana for their honeymoon. 24 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall 2014

Brittany Short & Derek Allen THE DATE June 7, 2014 HOW THEY MET Brittany and Derek were introduced to one another at a mutual friend’s birthday dinner at a pizza restaurant in Fayetteville. They dated for two-and-a-half years before they became engaged. THE ENGAGEMENT The couple took a Disney cruise with Brittany’s family in 2012. The second night aboard the ship was a formal dining night, and everyone in their group dressed their best. The cruise director chose a few children to interview on the red carpet for the night’s show, and Brittany’s cousin, Madison, was selected. Brittany and Derek joined Madison on the red carpet as she answered questions about Cinderella and Prince Charming. As this was going on, Derek dropped to one knee and asked Brittany to marry him. The proposal was filmed by the crew and broadcast on the ship, so the two received lots of well wishes from their fellow passengers. THE PLANS Brittany and Derek chose June 7th as their date because it is a good time of year for an outdoor wedding and doesn’t conflict with SEC football schedules. The couple knew they wanted both the ceremony and reception to be outdoors and fell in love with Horton Farms for the setting. Aside from the outdoor location, peonies were another feature that Brittany dreamt of incorporating into the design. “I knew I wanted peonies no matter what,” she says. They worked with Fayetteville’s Flora to incorporate these into arrangements and bouquets wherever possible. From there, the couple turned the planning efforts over to Bartus Taylor of Buzz Events. “He was my saving grace,” says Brittany. “I told him what I wanted and he made it happen.” THE BIG DAY Brittany wore an Eve of Milady gown. Due to her interest in fashion design, she had been a longtime fan of the label, and this was one of her must-haves on the wedding wish list. For her “something old,” Brittany wore her great-grandmother’s wedding ring, which will be 100 years old next year. The couple exchanged vows in the airy outdoor setting with more than 200 guests present. Derek surprised his bride by having doves released at the altar during their first kiss. At the reception, guests dined on chicken Marsala from Bordino’s before tasting both a bride’s cake and a groom’s cake. The bride’s cake featured different flavors on each tier and was topped with fresh floral in the wedding palette. The groom’s cake was a nod to his love of the Razorbacks and duck hunting. When it was time to say farewell, everyone lit exit lanterns and released them into the night sky for a beautiful ending to the day. 28 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall 2014

Jessica Buckland & Brad Hampton THE DATE April 5, 2014 HOW THEY MET The couple met through mutual friends and dated for seven years before becoming engaged. THE ENGAGEMENT Brad and Jessica were visiting New York City with friends. On the last day of the trip, Brad took Jessica to Rockefeller Center where the two took pictures from the building’s top observation deck. While Jessica was awestruck by the view, Brad pulled her back for one more picture, and then got down on one knee to propose. Not only did he capture Jessica’s attention, but also the eyes of the 50 or more tourists who happened to be there as well. “It was an absolutely perfect proposal and October 7, 2013 [their engagement date] will always be one of my favorite days,” Jessica says. THE PLANS The couple knew they wanted a short engagement and chose April 5, 2014 as their wedding day to ward off the possibility of a heat wave at their selected venue—Fayetteville’s Drake Field. I knew instantly that’s where we would get married,” Jessica says. Not only did the venue have plenty of space for their 350 guests, it also had “so much character with the wooden barrel ceiling and old planes and cars,” she adds. The couple chose a light palette of blush, gold, and taupe and carried these colors throughout the event. Jessica actually saw her dress two years before the wedding; it was one of the must-haves on her list. However, her mother made it extra special by adding a personal touch—a cloth heart that she cut from Jessica’s late grandmother’s wedding dress and stitched on the inside of her gown. “I could not have loved my dress any more as it was, but that addition made it even more special,” Jessica says. THE BIG DAY As with most weddings, there was an unexpected surprise on Jessica and Brad’s wedding day; Brad woke up with a stomach virus. Luckily, he was able to compose himself and the wedding was only stalled for 45 minutes. Jessica walked down an aisle lined with baby’s breath where she and Brad exchanged vows. They shared their first dance to Lady Antebellum’s “When You Got a Good Thing.” Guests enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres, and later the couple cut into the bride’s cake, a five-tiered confection, which featured edible gold paint, and Brad’s groom’s cake, which featured two squirrels, a nod to his Winslow, Arkansas, high school mascot. They exited the museum through a line of well-wishers holding sparklers. The two enjoyed a honeymoon in Playa Mujeres before settling into their home in Siloam Springs.

Courtney Phillips & Will Parrish THE DATE November 2, 2013 HOW THEY MET Courtney and Will graduated from high school together in their hometown of Greenville, Mississippi. Several years after they graduated, they reconnected through a mutual friend, and then the pair dated for two years before getting engaged. THE ENGAGEMENT While visiting their hometown and families over the 2012 Christmas holiday, Will made plans for his family and Courtney’s to have dinner together at her parents’ home. That night he surprised her with an early Christmas present—a bible with her new name, Courtney Phillips Parrish, engraved on it. While she was opening the bible, he dropped to one knee and proposed. “I was completely surprised by the proposal,” Courtney says. Afterward, the couple celebrated with family and close friends. THE PLANS Courtney and Will knew they wanted to have a destination wedding, but wanted the venue to be close enough for friends and family to travel to easily. On the suggestion of a family member, they visited Hot Springs’ Garvan Woodland Gardens. “As soon as we stepped into Anthony Chapel at Garvan Woodland Gardens we both immediately knew it was the perfect place for us to get married,” Courtney says of the stunning Arkansas venue. They chose a fall weekend that would offer a beautiful backdrop of foliage, yet didn’t conflict with Ole Miss or Mississippi State football schedules to keep their friends and family happy. Since they were planning the wedding from afar, they relied on the help of family as well as Randi Slick with Signature Events of Hot Springs. Using local Arkansas vendors, they were able to create a beautiful, laid-back weekend in this historic area of The Natural State. THE BIG DAY Courtney and Will exchanged vows in front of 200 guests in the stunning Anthony Chapel, which features floor-to-ceiling glass walls. During the ceremony, both sets of parents joined them for a unity prayer at the altar. “They each took a turn praying over our marriage, which was very special to us,” Courtney says. After moving to The Regency for the reception, guests enjoyed a buffet-style dinner featuring everything from fried ravioli to salmon and cream cheese canapés along with a traditional layered wedding cake. In place of a groom’s cake, the couple treated guests to bread pudding, which is both Courtney’s and Will’s favorite dessert. The two shared their first dance to Ray Lamontagne’s “You are the Best Thing.” The bridal party and guests danced the night away to the sounds of RAM Entertainment’s Funkytown before wishing the couple well, as the new Mr. and Mrs. Parrish headed for their honeymoon in Playa Mujeres, Mexico. 36 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall 2014

First, the bohemian style is very popular right now and will be a part of our 2015 line. Secondly, lace is still in and isn’t going anywhere. Third, the back of the dress has become the star of the show with low dips, illusion shaping, and lots of lace or fully beaded details. When it comes to bridesmaids, it’s all about color. We are continuing to see blush and taupe as popular hues along with coral and oyster or charcoal gray dresses. Greens, such as mint and jade, are also on the horizon for 2015. Many brides are choosing either one color and allowing maids to select different dress styles in this color, or they are choosing one dress style and ordering it in different colors. When it comes to the guys, suits are definitely the go-to choice now. A lot of couples want a more casual feel, and suits in tan, navy, or charcoal are popular options to achieve that look.

appointment only, we are a custom cake shop, and do not offer pre-decorated cakes in refrigerated cases. We set aside an hour for each consultation. I ask questions that help me understand their personalities, their taste levels, and the overall design of the wedding. I love seeing the couple’s Pinterest boards, magazine tear sheets, and pictures

of the wedding details. I want as much information as possible to help me build the perfect sketch for a wedding cake. They should also bring their sweet tooth for the amazing cake tasting. We usually include our top eight trending cake flavors and at least seven basic buttercreams.

We work by appointment so we can give our clients our full attention. The first meeting will take place in our showroom so we can get an idea of the wedding’s look. Then we will do an onsite walk-through of the venue where we take pictures and define the vision. From there, the couple will receive a computer assisted drawing of their space with our proposed layout of the event’s setup. We work with them to perfect this until they are happy with the result. When it’s time for the event, we deliver all the items one to two days prior to the wedding. We offer the option of setting everything up for you or leaving it to you. When the event is over, we can take it down or you can deconstruct and we will pick up.

Any other advice to help couples navigate this process? Know your

In terms of meetings and the big day, what should a couple expect when working with you? Do you have a process you follow? I love

getting to know my couples and laying out all of our plans for a perfect day at the beginning of the planning process. We’ll plan as precisely as possible to make the day

seamless and full of joy. From dressing in the bridal suite to the sparkler exit, we’ll have everything organized so that I can perfectly document every special moment.

Do you create a wedding day shot list or any other helpful guides for each couple? My couples hire me because they trust me and my expertise in this area. I know the flow of a wedding day and my shot list is in my head. We will discuss any special things that need to be considered, but I never need to be tied to a list to do my job well.

What do you feel sets you apart from other wedding photographers? I love being involved in the

planning process of my couples’ weddings. I never want to just show up and break out my camera. I want to know their families, their stories, their triumphs and tribulations in planning for the big day. If a decision has an effect on getting the most amazing wedding photos on a couples big day, I want to help and be involved in that decision—as much as a couple wants me to, anyway.

What are some of your best suggestions for making the most of a floral budget? You want guests to be

wowed when they walk in the door, so I suggest putting your budget toward one or two big statement pieces that will make a lasting impact rather than trying to cover every area. Also, try to use seasonal flowers, which are more readily available. And, be mindful of supply shortages or extra fees if the wedding date is near a holiday.

As far as the design, are there trends you are drawn to now?

My work is known for having a ‘Southern elegance’ style. Our arrangements are both beautiful and timeless. The forms may be fuller and the elements may tweaked, but overall they are classic. With that said, I’m always happy to incorporate the bride’s vision and fashion-forward trends, and Tipton Hurst has a huge selection of props and rentals available to achieve this.

Secondly, decide if you want an indoor or outdoor reception or a combination. The weather may be a factor, so consider rain plans and temperatures. Lastly, look at the amenities included in the venue. Are tables and chairs included? Set-up? These are items that might cost extra or need to be rented. The more the venue includes, the better.

For many brides, finding a gown is one of the most cherished and important tasks of planning HER wedding. Dorcas Prince, owner of the storied Low’s Bridal and Formal shop in Brinkley, shares her ten rules for selecting the perfect dress

gown eight to twelve months prior to the wedding. Gowns typically take four to five months to arrive once ordered, and you’ll want to allow plenty of time for alterations and portraits.

2. Find Inspiration Before you go

3. Set a Budget Discuss budget with the people that are helping to pay for the wedding. We never want a bride to fall in love with a gown only to find out it is out of her price range.
