get creative This week, I took a trip to the dry cleaners to drop off a lovely tangerine-colored dress I wore recently in a friend’s wedding. The attendant brought out my clothes to pick up, and in the bag was a similar dress, but in lavender. I’d worn it in another wedding just a few months earlier. I smiled, thinking of the rainbow of hues I’ve worn in my dearest friends’ weddings over the years. Color is only one of the Photo by Rett Peek ways you can show off a bit of your personality in your wedding. In every issue, we try to showcase an array of palettes and styles in our Real Weddings section, and this issue is no different—but alongside this, it was fun to also see the other moments of creativity injected into the festivities! From a hanging installation of peonies and roses (page 40) to an aerial salute of paper planes (page 48), these brides and grooms made their celebrations memorable for their guests as well as special for the two of them. Whether you’re newly engaged (congrats!) or well on your way to planning a dream wedding, I hope you’ll find something in this issue that sparks an idea for your own big day. Best wishes!

NATURAL ELEMENTS

When Anna Dickinson of Perception by Anna started planning this styled shoot, she looked to her own wedding day—an elopement in Africa—for inspiration. “I got married in Zambia at Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. We were there for two weeks and went on safari, and it was amazing,” she says. “It was the first thing I thought of when I started brainstorming.” In addition to a faraway place, Anna drew inspiration from a different time period for the gowns, hair, and makeup for the models. “I started to think about the idea of this bride from the 1930s or ’40s, almost like an Out of Africa vibe, and what she would look like if we picked her up out of that time and put her in today’s world.” To help make this vision a reality, Anna called on a few of her “dream team” wedding vendors, including Tanarah Haynie of Tanarah Luxe Floral and Betsy Manning of Unveiled Bridal Collection. Together, they brought to life three distinct looks for three different models. “Tanarah had the cool idea of doing it at the zoo, and then it all kind of fell into place,” Anna says. “And as soon as I told Betsy about inspiration from the ’30s and ’40s, she took me straight to these dresses. She knew exactly what I was going for.” Rather than traditional bouquets, Anna and Tanarah worked together to incorporate floral designs into each of the bride’s looks in unexpected ways. “It just brings a whole different element to the design, and a whole different feel to a wedding when you think out of the box,” Anna says.

22 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall/Winter 2019

Anna mixed traditional elements, like her motherin-law’s china, with more modern pieces to create a tabletop scene that coordinates with the brides’ looks. “The candlesticks have a classic design, but the matte gold brings a more modern flair to it,” she says. Antler-like branches in the floral centerpiece also play into the wildlife theme.

Tousled hair and a bold red lip play off Anna’s idea for this look to represent a spirited, daredevil bride.

“When you’re planning weddings, you find every girl has a story that explains why she picked this wedding dress or where she’s getting married. It all makes sense together because it’s all part of her story.” —Anna Dickinson

ANIMAL INSTINCT

“A huge part of this shoot was about wearable art,” Anna says of floral creations carried by and attached to the three models. “We thought, What if a bride is so artsy that she wants to wear her flowers around her shoulders as a shawl or cascading down her back?” Anna says. “We wanted to show people that you can have artistic expression in your wedding design.” Here, a wearable installation on the bride’s right shoulder mimics the serpentine body of the snake seen on her left.

INSPIRED STYLE

To determine different looks for the three models, Anna developed a backstory for each of the brides they would be portraying, which influenced everything from the dresses they wore to the details of their hair and makeup. “When you’re planning weddings, you find every girl has a story that explains why she picked this wedding dress or where she’s getting married,” Anna says. “It all makes sense together because it’s all part of her story.”

It’s not every day a bride delivers her own ring to an engagement. But that’s exactly how Matt Overby and his bride, Jo Johnson, began their journey to the altar. Matt had purchased a ring and had it shipped to a friend in Arkansas, planning to get it when he moved there from St. Louis in the near future. However, he knew he would have to catch Jo off guard to surprise her with the engagement, so at the last minute, he joined in on a trip to Salt Lake City for a shoot with Jo and two friends, all of whom are photographers. Now, all he needed was the ring. Before she left, one of his friends was able to slip the ring under the driver’s seat of Jo’s car, where it rode with her to meet Matt in St. Louis before their trip. Once in Salt Lake City, he proposed at sunset in the Bonneville Salt Flats. “It took about an hour before anything hit me, which means the surprise was real, and I loved that,” Jo says. Back in Arkansas, they began planning their big day. As a wedding photographer, Jo says she picked the time of year that historically has had the best weather for weddings she has shot—the beginning of May. Wanting a small, personal ceremony, they exchanged vows on May 4 with 40 friends and family members in attendance in Highlandville, Missouri. Two weeks later, they held a reception with 175 guests at Drake Field in Fayetteville. “I didn’t have a vision of the details. I just wanted our people to understand how special they are to us and to celebrate them and what they mean to us during our big day,” Jo says. Describing their wedding as intimate and relaxed, Jo and Matt had special touches like her wearing her mother’s wedding gown to her rehearsal dinner and spending time with their small guest list playing games on the lawn. As for their advice to engaged couples, Jo and Matt say, “Follow your own heart! Don’t let other people influence your decisions. This is your day and you only get to do it once!”

Because Jo is a wedding photographer by trade, choosing a photographer was one of the hardest decisions. “I have a personal connection to so many photographers, so Matt made the final decision,” Jo says. “We were adamant that we find someone who felt like a friend.”

Working with Chris Norwood of Tipton & Hurst, the couple brought the look of spring indoors through floral design. “One of my favorite elements was the hanging flowers in the garden room at the reception, which Chris executed beyond my expectations,” Jane Anne says.

SWEET SITE

Jane Anne notes having the ceremony at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral was nostalgic for her as she grew up going to daily chapel here and participating in Christmas pageants during her elementary years.

Jane Anne Murphy and Ryan Shanahan might have met at a New York City bar called “No Fun,” but the celebration of their wedding day was anything but that! After four years of dating, Ryan surprised Jane Anne with a proposal in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in the spring of 2018, and the couple began planning their celebration in Jane Anne’s hometown of Little Rock. They selected May in hopes of beautiful spring weather where their guests could enjoy all that central Arkansas offers. “It was so special to bring all of our family and friends to Arkansas, a place many of our guests had never visited,” the bride says. However, while the wedding was set to take place in Jane Anne’s hometown, she wanted to make sure the weekend also had special touches of Ryan’s hometown, Potomac, Maryland. These included crab chips in guests’ welcome bags and cherry blossoms surrounding the dance floor. “Classic, bright, and fun” were the words the couple used to describe the décor and tone of their big day, which included 375 guests in attendance. The well-wishers dined on traditional Southern fare and danced the night away, starting with the bride and groom’s first dance to Aretha Franklin’s upbeat version of “You Send Me.” After a honeymoon in the Grenadines, the couple are now at home in New York City.

Lakin shopped for months before finding the perfect dress. For this reason, she decided to keep her selection a secret until the day of the wedding.

The top of the Eiffel Tower was the setting for Ryan Lofgren’s dreamy proposal to Lakin Snow. The pair were visiting friends who were stationed overseas at the time, and Paris was definitely a highlight of the trip. “It was truly a fairytale proposal that will never be forgotten,” Lakin says. Ryan, who grew up in the military and currently serves in the United States Air Force, was in Little Rock for training when he met Lakin, who is originally from Mountain View, at a local bar. From there, the couple dated four years before he asked her to marry him. While they were living in Arizona when they became engaged, the pair decided to plan a wedding in Arkansas, where most of their family members live. The day was laden with personal touches that made it unique, including handwritten notes from the couple for each of their 120 guests. Additionally, many of the themes throughout the day alluded to Ryan’s career in the Air Force—there were wooden planes, which were “flown” at the end of the ceremony; a custom leather pilot log served as a guest book; and an airfield-inspired seating chart was designed by the groom. Guests were treated to a sit-down dinner followed by pies and platters of warm cookies and chocolatecovered strawberries delivered later in the evening. The couple made their exit through a sparkler-lit aisle of wellwishers to John Legend’s “A Good Night.”

FLYING HIGH

Upon arrival, guests found handpainted wooden airplanes in their seats and were asked to “fly them into the venue just after the couple were pronounced husband and wife.

TO THEIR TASTES

Lakin and Ryan went for a cake tasting in the fall and fell in love with a white cake with pumpkin undertones, a seasonal flavor at the bakery. “At first we didn’t even want to taste it but after we did, we had to have it. It took a lot of convincing our family to try a pumpkin cake in summer, but there was no disappointment,” Lakin says.

Silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus were paired with ivory roses to create simple, elegant garlands for the tables.

IN FULL BLOOM

The bridal bouquet included bright flowers paired with soft greenery around the edges along with a few tropical flowers for an unexpected touch.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Both Brittany and Tim say their favorite memory of the day was the first look. “For that moment, it was not only the culmination of months and months of excitement and preparation, but it was also the reality setting in for us that this was OUR day and the first day of a lifetime of happiness together as a married couple,” Tim says.

Mexican restaurant brought them together. The pair dated for more than two years, during which time Tim’s job moved him to Chicago. He planned a trip back to Portland for Brittany’s birthday. While there, he took her to Bridal Veil Falls where he popped the question. While neither Brittany nor Tim is originally from Arkansas, they knew Bentonville, where Brittany’s parents now live, was the perfect location for their wedding. “We were absolutely blown away by Record as a venue,” Brittany says. “On top of everything, we knew our guests would be pleasantly surprised by Bentonville as it has so much to offer visitors. It’s a hidden gem.” They especially loved the idea of being able to exchange vows in a church and host their reception in an industrial space where Brittany says they could “integrate nature and a softness” into the day. To further personalize the celebration, a motif of bubbles and circles—a nod to Brittany’s childhood nickname, “Bubbles”—carried throughout the celebration. This included everything from champagne to circular balloons and guests blowing bubbles as the couple exited the church. To give their friends and family a taste of Arkansas, the couple served barbecue at the reception, followed by a cake featuring both her favorite flavor, lemon with raspberry buttercream frosting, and his, carrot cake with classic buttercream. Brittany and Tim enjoyed a honeymoon in Italy before returning to Chicago to make their home as newlyweds.

POM LINE

Brittany’s sister, who is an artist, created a pom installation, which served as a backdrop for the head table at the couple’s reception.

Morgan Huff and Jeremy Light. “I was a freshman and he was a junior,” Morgan recalls. “We were both in Greek life at UCA, so we met through mutual friends.” After four years of dating, Jeremy proposed at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs. “It was a very sweet moment for both of us. We were over the moon with joy and excitement,” Morgan says. Prior to the engagement, Jeremy asked for permission to marry Morgan and received a ring from her grandmother. “It was the first diamond my grandmother received from my grandfather, 11 years after they were married,” Morgan says of the cherished token. During their nine months of planning, the couple envisioned an intimate and romantic celebration. After selecting a day in December, they visited Goodwin Manor as they searched for a venue. “We knew as soon as we stepped foot there that it was the place. We loved that it felt like a castle and was perched on a hill,” Morgan says. Here, the pair said “I do” with 110 close family and friends in attendance. Afterward, they hosted a cocktail hour complete with a lobster bisque for guests to enjoy prior to the seated dinner. Later, they shared their first dance to Adele’s “To Make You Feel My Love” before exiting the night through a line of well-wishers holding sparklers against the wintry night sky.

DARK & DREAMY

Morgan notes she likes “dark colors and classic styles.” Thus, the intimate celebration was a true reflection of her.
