From the Editor While the month of March has been known to usher in cold snaps across Arkansas, I can’t help but feel the full force of spring while flipping through this issue. How can you take in the overflowing greenhouse, lush landscapes, and resort-worthy pools on these pages and not want to jump into warmweather mode? I’m ready to bid adieu to the nest of blankets I’ve huddled under through the winter and start spending evenings on the back porch, where we can see the top of the sunset and listen to the soft sounds of the neighborhood winding down for the day. I’m not saying I’ve put all my sweaters up for the season just yet, but I am saying I’m ready.

Fort Smith native Holly Udouj Trotter has always had a knack for interiors. “I hoarded design magazines as a child and painted my walls at least 10 times,” she recalls. Working in her grandmother’s floral shop from an early age, she had the opportunity to try on all the hats of a design business, from going to market and bookkeeping to eventually becoming the lead florist. Inspired by this experience, she soon after opened Holly Udouj Home & Garden. It was here that her talent for interior design became apparent as customers—including the owners of this bath, Audra and Trey Jackson—saw the shop and began requesting her help with their own spaces. “They have four children, so life is very busy for them,” Holly says, noting this primary bath, in particular, needed to operate as a retreat.

Playing off of the home’s traditional style and color palette of gray and white, Holly designed a space with all the amenities the couple wanted. “I like to create a timeless and classic foundation and then add in a few fun pieces,” she says. “I want a project to be as beautiful in 15 years as it is the day I finish it.” Working within the existing floor plan, the cabinetry was updated with paint as well as new countertops and hardware. A deck-style tub was traded for a standalone option and a dark, enclosed shower area was replaced with a glass surround. Heated floors, a warming drawer for towels, and a zero-threshold shower entry also checked boxes on the couple’s wishlist.

His-and-hers vanities in a custom paint color sit opposite the tub and shower. Geometric chrome hardware coordinates with the shower floor, while a leather-topped swivel stool provides a comfortable perch for applying makeup.

Classic large-scale sconces provide additional task lighting at the mirrors and also adhere to the room’s overall timeless appearance. Their chrome finish is repeated throughout the space.

In the shower, what Holly refers to as a “variation of a braided pattern” brings interest underfoot while coordinating with the shower walls and the rest of the bath’s marble-look porcelain tile.

SLEEK SHOWER
The previous shower was enlarged and enclosed with glass for a more open feel. A floating infinity-style bench and dual showerheads are practical additions that also add elegance.

With a background spanning dance, photography, textiles, and floral design, Alecia WallsBarton is the quintessential renaissance woman. Her recent passion is visual art made from dehydrated flowers, a creative outlet she explores under the name Alchemy Atelier. “Alchemy is a term that refers to early chemistry. I like that word because it has a scientific feel but also a magical, mystical quality,” she says, likening this work to her experience in the photography darkroom. “I’ve always been drawn to historical techniques, and I find myself happiest when working through that slow, methodical process.” Alecia’s interest in botanicals began in her mother’s flower shop. After graduating from Memphis College of Art, she joined her in the business of floral design. “I’d grown up around flowers, and I fell in love with

them all over again,” she says. It was here that she started to experiment with pressings, first with deconstructed bridal bouquets and wedding arrangements. “I hated the fact that flowers had their one day and then were tossed in the trash—it felt like such a waste,” she says. With Alchemy Atelier, she uses dehydrated foliage to create framed pressings and three-dimensional works. “Like a lot of artistic pursuits, it’s not the technique that takes time to perfect—it’s the expression,” she says. “It’s all about the process for me. I get to take something that was already beautiful and extend the life of it.”
WORLD OF WONDER
Dehydrated peonies, roses, zinnias, celosia, lavender, bleached ruscus, and palm are captured under glass cloches to create intriguing art for tabletop displays. “There’s something really beautiful about being able to see it from 360 degrees,” Alecia says. “The flowers become their own little worlds in there.”

HISTORY OF THE ART
Though the use of dried flora in medicinal, cosmetic, and spiritual applications can be traced back through ancient history, we have the Japanese to thank for elevating the practice to an art form. Their intricately arranged pressed petals, called oshibana, became prominent in the 16th century. Preserved florals have cycled in and out of fashion ever since.
DRY IT YOURSELF
Interested in pressing flowers at home? It’s as easy as having a heavy book, absorbent paper, and a few blooms on hand. “This is a very accessible hobby, and there are so many ways to do it,” Alecia says. She recommends finding how-to resources online and starting small. For example, practice with single petals before attempting a full bloom. Much has been said about Fort Smith’s The Unexpected since its inception in 2015. The public arts project has received international praise, local criticism, and everything in between—and that’s the point, according to director Claire Kolberg. “From our perspective, if you’re talking about art in a way you weren’t before, that’s a good thing,” she says. The Unexpected is an annual event that invites muralists from all over the world to adorn the exterior walls of Fort Smith buildings with their signature large-scale paintings. It is an ongoing project of 64.6 Downtown, a nonprofit with the larger mission of increasing the viability of Fort Smith’s historic business district. Since the initial event, the city has hosted close to 40 creators from Portugal, South Africa, New Zealand, the UK, and beyond. The nature of the project means interest in the murals doesn’t

dissipate after the weeklong festival wraps and artists return home; out-of-town visitors flock to see these permanent pieces in person, while Fort Smith residents are also invited to consider their environment in a different light. “This is really a way to encourage people to get out and be curious about their city,” Claire says. “We also want to give people a reason to look somewhere they might not have looked before,” she adds, referring to the way the murals both enrich the urban landscape and open people’s eyes to all there is to love about Fort Smith. “The growth here might be slower than you see in other parts of the state, but it’s all very grassroots,” Claire says. “It’s multi-generational; you see a second and third generation of people, who care about the city, picking up where their parents left off.” Read on for a few of our favorite reasons to discover Fort Smith.

Myranda Grulke uncovers a passion for gardening while renovating a historic property

These days, Myranda Grulke describes gardening as “part of her lifestyle.” 42 At Home in Arkansas | March 2022
But judging from the lush beds of seasonal color and a greenhouse brimming with potted plants, you would never guess she still considers herself a beginner. This Little Rock local’s love of plants began several years ago when she and her husband, Lamonte, bought their first house: a property in foreclosure that needed a little TLC. “Like any young couple, we wanted to find a home we were comfortable in but also be smart with our money,” Myranda says. “We looked at neighborhoods all over Little Rock and ended up really wanting to put love into downtown.” They happened upon this 1920s
cottage in the Central High School Neighborhood Historic District and knew it was the one. “When we started looking at it, we thought, this could be possible!” she says. While working on the house, the Grulkes were mindful of restoration guidelines that would not only allow them to qualify for helpful tax credits, but also ensure the home remained a “contributing property” to the neighborhood’s status on the National Register of Historic Places. In doing so, they replaced brickwork, matched the existing mortar, and returned

Myranda also has a passion for houseplants, which was the driving force behind the addition of a greenhouse to the garden. “I had 10 houseplants before we moved; in the new house, that number multiplied to about a thousand,” she laughs. The structure is pre-built from Arkansas company Yoderbilt, and the couple customized it with a porch, interior lighting, and plumbing to create a true backyard destination.

It was through boosting the home’s curb appeal with beds of elephant ears, rosemary, maiden grass, and gladiolas that Myranda was bitten by the gardening bug. The next summer, the couple moved their attention to the backyard, which had been in a state of disarray before they purchased the home. Filled with old cars and scrap metal, they spent a lot of time cleaning, clearing, and prepping before Myranda could even undertake plantings; once she got started, the garden took off. “At the time, I was keeping it small because I didn’t know what I was doing,” she says. “It kept growing and growing, then we started looking into

irrigation and ways to make it more efficient.” While the painstaking renovation of the home’s interiors might be complete, Myranda’s garden continues to evolve, serving as a source of joy for both the Grulkes and their neighbors. “Gardening is such a giving community. When you grow something, you want to share it,” she says. “I make bouquets for my neighbors and share eggs with them. Kids on the block come by to see the chickens and look in the pond. I love that I can share it with them, especially in a day and age when younger people maybe don’t get into gardening. I feel like if they want to try it one day, that means something. It’s such a healthy pastime and a very giving hobby.” AH

“Even though I love it, I’m still kind of new at gardening. I’m growing flowers that are beginner-proof yet still rewarding,” Myranda says. While Lamonte had no carpentry experience prior to this house, he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty while figuring it out. Among his projects is the backyard’s above-ground pond, which is home to koi and goldfish as well as floating plants like water lettuce and water hyacinth. A box along the top has ornamental plantings and a water feature. He also built the home’s cedar window boxes.

“Since they like to entertain, the Heathmans wanted to have all the amenities of a full kitchen outdoors to keep from running back into the house,” David says. The space is equipped with a sink, refrigerated drawers, and a smoker with a side burner. A mounted television allows them to watch the game from the bar, pool, or lounge area. “Since everyone gathers in the kitchen—even outside—we built it to accommodate a crowd,” he adds.
IN THE SWING
A porch swing was a must-have for Kelli, who says she loves relaxing in either a swing or rocker. “It’s funny because you can say these are in style right now, but growing up in North Carolina, they’ve always been a part of my home,” she says.
“E
veryone who knows me knows this is my dream house,” says Kelli Heathman of the home she and her husband, Dr. Monty Heathman, share. The bones of the house—its French country influence, in particular—spoke to her tastes, and since moving here in 2015, she and designer Mona Thompson Phelan have worked to refresh furnishings and accents throughout the interiors. Recently, they turned their attention to the outdoors, bringing in David Munsey, III, of Better Lawns & Gardens to create a retreat. “I travel a lot for work so I wanted a place where I could relax on the weekends,” Kelli says. “Plus, we love to entertain and both wanted an area where there was plenty of room for guests and a flow of different spaces to welcome them.” Beyond the home’s existing covered porch and fireplace was a spacious, wooded lot ripe with opportunity for all their desires—from a pool and lounge area to an outdoor kitchen. “Our goals were to make sure it didn’t feel too detached from the home and that from inside they had a panoramic

He notes the space’s terraced landscape draws one to look out from the back porch, walk down to the pool area, and then continue on to the outdoor kitchen. “There’s a natural progression, and when you look out from the home you get this as well,” he says. Attention to detail was also given to the structure’s form, the materials, and the palette so the space would appear as though it was constructed when the home was built. “We really worked hard on the front end of this design before we began construction,” David says.
“It was her vision coming to life.” A key element of this was adhering to the existing aesthetic. “This is a very French country, traditional style with a lighter palette of cream and soft blues. Even the structure has a chateau look,” says Mona, who sourced furnishings and accessories that were an extension of what is seen in the interior of the house. “We tried to think of anything and everything because this is our forever home,” Kelli says. “It’s so tranquil and relaxing that we spend all of our free time here. We used to go out for date nights but now we just head to the backyard.” AH

The owners of Porch View Home create a homestead where their passions for gardening, design, and time well spent can grow
T
odd Smith and Charlie Groppetti may have generations past to thank for their love of rural life. “We both grew up with grandmothers who loved having a garden and growing flowers,” Charlie says. While he spent time with his grandmother in his native California’s Central Valley, Todd’s roots are here in central Arkansas, just outside Vilonia—a place the two of them could envision themselves once their son, Leland, joined the family. “We loved our house in North Little Rock’s Park Hill, but Todd had always wanted chickens and I wanted more space for plants,” Charlie says. However, while these were draws, the driving catalyst was the neighbors, or, more specifically, the family. “It was important for us to be near Todd’s parents so they could spend time with Leland and we could have help after school or when we needed to travel for work,” Charlie says, noting Todd’s parents live just up the hill from them. As the founders of Porch View Home, a home and lifestyle brand, they wanted the aesthetic of their property to reflect the products they create. “We are all about relaxed living, and our line is based on this; we love antiques, and we love time-worn pieces and a patina,” Charlie says. “When we set up our showrooms,
we bring the country to the city. We come with branches of blooming peaches and apples. It really makes us stand out and helps us convey the farm-to-table look we love.” To this end, the property’s plantings feature an abundance of Southern classics, including hydrangeas and magnolia. “Repeating them creates interest and brings so much texture to the garden, which is an aspect we love,” Charlie says. “My favorite time of year is when everything is green and white in the garden and the textures shine.” He also notes the vistas seen throughout the grounds, which allow for peeks of the mountains. “There’s a lot of depth in the landscape so you can’t tell where our property ends and the natural landscape begins. This was very purposeful,” he says. “We joke about being off the grid, but we do want to be self-sustainable,” Charlie says. There are the expected vegetables and herbs they grow and the eggs they gather from their chickens, but this sustainability includes cut flowers as well. “Whether we need to create an arrangement for a funeral, a bouquet for a bridal portrait, or just something to enjoy in our home, we want to be able to walk out and cut from the garden,” he says. NEW HOUSE, OLD LOOK
The home, which was built seven years ago, was designed to look as though it has been in place for decades. “We wanted it to look like an old farmhouse,” Charlie says. Its muted color transitions well to the surrounding environment, while a salt-finish driveway and large landscape rocks add to the better-over-time character. Beds filled with timeless plantings of magnolia, hydrangea, and boxwoods meander around the front exterior for a welcoming feel.

The family room off the breakfast nook is where the Palmers spend Christmas morning. “This tree is very special to us because it is filled entirely with ornaments Jon’s aunt has given him since he was born,” Kricia says. To bring a coziness to the comfortable gathering space, she painted the ceiling in a grounding blue.
SECRET GARDEN
As you leave the front porch, the grass is dotted with slabs of stone that measure as large as 6 to 8 feet. “We didn’t want a tornado to blow them away,” Charlie says with a laugh. These lead to a circular planting he says feels almost like a “natural playhouse” in the middle of the property. “It’s a completely private, screened landscape border—you can’t even see the house when you are there.” He and Todd have set up a firepit here and often cook beans or roast s’mores with Leland in the secluded setting.

ON THE RIGHT PATH
Fence panels were repurposed as gates that lead from the front drive to the pool area. “We left them just as they were with the peeling paint and rust because we love that old, established feel they have,” Charlie says. Rather than traditional 3- or 4-foot-wide sidewalks, the designers opted for a 6-foot path that allows seasonal blooms to spill down the walkway without overtaking it.

THE GATHERING PLACE
One of the last additions to the home was a pool and outdoor lounge area. A natural stone surround connects it to the landscape, while a short wall separates the space from a vegetable garden. “We keep the pool uncovered yearround because the water and organic feel is so pretty to look out and see,” Charlie says.

Palms and sweet potato vines fill massive containers that mark the pool’s entrances. “I love magnolias and boxwoods—more formal plantings— but Todd loves palms so we put these by the pool, and I’ve come to like them here; they give an oasis feel,” Charlie says.

Chris H. Olsen Chris H.
