From the Editor Every issue I have the privilege of going through dozens of submissions that come across my desk for consideration in our Real Weddings section. It’s no small task to whittle this list down to the 10 you see published here; the process takes weeks, and great care is taken to select weddings representing different parts of the state and utilizing as many local vendors as possible. And, since the wedding industry is nothing if not innovative, we also try to share those that showcase new trends and forward-thinking ideas. To me, this is where these featured weddings most shine: when the couple steps outside the box of what’s expected to embrace their passions and personalities. For example, I love the way Nina and Joseph surprised guests with a Vietnamese “lion dance” at their reception (page 33) and how Hannah and Victor used a bright marigold palette to infuse their coffee shop wedding with joy (page 48). No matter you and your future spouse’s style, I’m sure you’ll find some ideas worth bookmarking in this issue. I hope it leaves you empowered to make the day your own. Happy planning!

ith designers working on the West Coast as well as in Utah, the Northeast, and Arkansas, Brooke Baker of White Sage Events is building a wedding planning empire. Having moved to Arkansas in 2020 to be closer to family, she established a territory here in the South, bringing her California ethos with her. “We have a really high focus on design and bringing in more unique and modern pieces. I’m constantly pushing the envelope and asking for new things,” she says. For this styled shoot, she teamed up with the owners of Legacy Acres for a bright and colorful contemporary wedding scene. For flower arrangements, Brooke gave floral design company Arloh Flora free rein based on the pink and orange palette. mix of dried and fresh florals, and acrylic accents bring in the nontraditional flair Brooke imagines a modern bride might seek. “I think the foundation of the design is someone who's looking to be unique,” she says. “She’s really looking for something different than the everyday.” To help bring the scene to life, Brooke called on wedding vendors she could trust to go bold. “I am really intentional in selecting our collaborators so that I can give them their own creative freedom,” she says. For example, for floral design and catering, she gave those respective vendors a color palette and let them select the details. Even the sleek fashion selections play into the modern feel of the setting, creating an overall aesthetic that’s as effortlessly chic as it is inspiring. Winter 2023 | weddingsinarkansas.com 15

nna Carr and Tim Roncal were introduced by mutual college friends and dated for just over a year before he popped the question. “I am such a difficult person to surprise, so I picked up on some hints here and there that it was coming, but I didn’t know how it would happen,” Anna says. One weekend, her parents and best friend came to visit in her current city of Nashville, Tennessee. Tim joined them on a trip to a family friend’s property outside of town. Little did Anna know, Tim had been working with her parents and their friends to select a beautiful wooded area on the acreage to propose. While the surprise was almost sidetracked by a storm, the plan worked and Anna said “yes.” During their six-month engagement, the couple planned a celebration in Anna’s hometown of Searcy. Since high school she had dreamed of hosting her reception in a hangar at the Searcy Municipal Airport. “I envisioned having big band-style music playing with tons of greenery in a huge candlelit hangar,” the bride says. “Most importantly, I wanted it to be very traditional and classy.” Working with wedding planner and designer Jessika McCuin, the couple’s vision came to life. “Jessika made the process so fun for me and remembered every last detail in order to make sure the day was perfect from beginning to end,” Anna says. Guests dined on appetizers inspired by Tim’s Filipino heritage before a sit-down dinner followed by dancing on a white-and-gold checkerboard floor. When the evening ended, the couple took to the sky for a grand exit on a private jet. Following a honeymoon in Mexico, they are now at home in Nashville.

SETTING THE SCENE

Tanarah Luxe Floral and Crown Entertainment transformed the hangar with silk drapes that flowed from the ceiling and groupings of smilax vine interwoven with twinkling lights along the walls. A welcoming floral archway led guests into the space where large arrangements were made to look like magnolia trees. 28 Weddings in Arkansas | Winter 2023

MEANINGFUL MELODY

For their first dance, dear friends of the couple sang Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” with one of Anna’s college professors accompanying them on the guitar. “It was so special to have them perform that for us,” the bride says.

FAMILY RECIPE

Anna grew up with her great-grandmother making a coconut cake for all the family birthdays, holidays and special occasions. Wanting to honor her, she took the recipe to PattiCakes, who interpreted it on a large scale for the couple’s guests. The four-tiered confection was embellished with garlands of icing and topped with a vintage-style bride and groom.

R E A L W E D D I N G S Samantha wanted a palette of white and blue for the floral arrangements. She selected traditional standbys like roses and hydrangeas but gave the floral designers at Tipton & Hurst free rein to create a magical setting.

SEAL THE DEAL

Light blue wax seals held seating assignments to an acrylic board set against a hydrangea background, which mimics the fresh blooms seen through the celebration.

WE’RE BIG FANS

With the ceremony being held outdoors in early June, the couple gave each guest a paper fan in the day’s colors of blue and white.

S

amantha Partington-Farrow met her groom, Alex Cope, at a house party years prior to their actual first date. While Samantha was living in Australia, Alex messaged her to ask for a date to get sushi when she was back in the States. She held him to it, and on that first date they hit it off. After four years of dating, the two were planning a trip to the U.K. to see—and for Alex to meet—Samantha’s extended family. He was also planning to propose on this trip during a stop in Barcelona, Spain. “It was stressful left and right,” Alex recalls, noting the ring arrived just before they were scheduled to leave with little time for him to hide it. Luckily, Samantha was overjoyed to say “yes” and the two began planning their dream wedding. With Samantha having family abroad and Alex’s relatives traveling from across the South, their

hometown (and current city) of Little Rock seemed an ideal location for the nuptials. With the help of Taylor Hight with Amanda Reed Weddings, they began planning a late spring celebration at the Country Club of Little Rock that included a theme of blue and white, from the invitations to the bridesmaids’ dresses and the flowers. The couple tearfully exchanged vows they had written for one another with their guests seated in a radiating circle around them on the club’s lawn. After they were pronounced husband and wife, guests made their way indoors for a dinner of Southern favorites. Following one final, private spin around the dance floor, the couple exited through a tunnel of well-wishers tossing flowers and streamers from party poppers. After a trip to Thailand, they are at home in Little Rock. Winter 2023 | weddingsinarkansas.com 31

PICK YOUR PATTERN

Wanting something different than standard, solid-hued bridesmaid dresses, Samantha looked for blue and white patterned options. “My matron of honor sent me this dress from Reformation, and I fell in love. I immediately knew it was the one.”

FLORAL FEATURE

Along with arrangements of blooms in the blush color palette, Pigmint Floral Studio created an installation of greenery and disco balls over the dance floor. Nina’s bouquet featured roses, ranunculus, anthurium, and eucalyptus in a range of tones befitting both the day’s palette and the time of year.

T

hough Nina Phan and Joseph Nguyen first met in Fayetteville almost 20 years ago, it wasn’t until 2015 that their lives became more closely intertwined. That year, Nina had just moved back to Arkansas from Dallas, and it wasn’t long before the two started dating. “Secretly, I think he had a crush on me for a while,” Nina says with a laugh. In June 2021, Joseph—with the help of a few of Nina’s cousins—surprised his future bride with a proposal while on vacation in Cancun. She said “yes,” and the two started planning for a fall wedding in Northwest Arkansas. Right away the couple was drawn to Osage House for its open layout and contemporary aesthetic. “We wanted chic and modern,” Nina says, describing their color palette as “blushing noir.” It was also important to both parties to honor and incorporate pieces of their Vietnamese heritage into the big day. “The morning of our wedding we had a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony at our home, and at the reception we served a seven-course Vietnamese familystyle dinner,” Nina says. They also surprised guests with a traditional “lion dance” during their grand entrance, which symbolizes good luck and prosperity. After a honeymoon in Turks and Caicos, the Nguyens are at home in Tontitown.

fter meeting by their apartment complex pool on a hot summer day, Matt Bradley proposed to his bride, Brooke Clanton, three and a half years later on a very chilly ski trip with family and friends to Vail. “He kept walking around to show me all of the places that were significant to him during his six-month tenure there,” Brooke recalls. Matt steered their party toward a group of giant Christmas trees then got down on one knee, and Brooke said “yes.” “I wanted a spring wedding with soft pastel colors inspired by one of my mom and I’s favorite movies, Steel Magnolias,” Brooke says, adding that the couple wanted the day to feel like a “big family reunion.” She thought April 1, 2023 would be a memorable date, while Matt loved the idea of an April Fool’s anniversary and the pranks that could potentially come along with it. Having toured Rusty Tractor Vineyards while living in Little Rock, Brooke felt it was the perfect combination of “modern city with rustic agricultural roots.” Because she previously worked as a marketing coordinator at Tipton & Hurst and has a strong relationship with the floral designers there, she called on them for all the day’s floral designs. She showed the team pictures of bouquets with ‛Juliet’ roses and soft, romantic arrangements and then let them run with the inspiration.

Following the ceremony, the couple shared a private dinner featuring Mexican food and margaritas before making a grand entrance for their first dance and a continued celebration. Clusters of Osage oranges, a wild fruit native to the Southern United States, complemented the table arrangements and are a subtle nod to memories from Alex’s childhood.

BIG ON LITTLE ROCK

Custom invitation suites featuring an envelope liner of a map of downtown Little Rock set the tone for Alex and Jarrod’s big day, and a marbled pattern reappeared in other paper elements, such as the bar menu.

Jarrod’s dad provided antique Turkish rugs to layer and serve as the dance floor. “Jarrod and I both have eclectic tastes and carried that element throughout the style of the wedding,” Alex says.

chance meeting while watching a Razorback basketball game at Little Rock’s Hill Station led to love for Brooks Pender and Andrew Childers. After spotting Andrew across the room, Brooks’ aunt went over to ask if he had met her niece. He came by, bought her table a round of drinks, and the two hit it off. Brooks and Andrew dated for two years before he proposed on a rose petal-filled balcony at Pescado’s Seafood in Rosemary Beach, Florida. Wanting to marry the following spring, the two began looking at venues immediately. “I was literally sitting outside on my parents’ patio when the idea came to me; I want to be married in the backyard where I grew up,” Brooks says. Envisioning a Southern garden wedding, Brooks and her mother enlisted the help of wedding planner Jessika McCuin to make it a reality. Andrew’s grandfather performed the ceremony, uniting the couple in marriage while 200 wellwishers looked on. Afterward, the celebration continued at the nearby Country Club of Little Rock where guests dined on prime rib, salmon, and squash ravioli among other options. At the end of the evening, trumpets led the way to a getaway car where the newlyweds made their exit through a tunnel of bubbles. Following a honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, they are now at home in Little Rock.

HOME SWEET HOME

Being married in the backyard of Brooks’ childhood home amidst a blooming spring garden was a meaningful way for the couple to start their next chapter as husband and wife.

The floor plan for the reception was centered on the bride’s seven-layer cake. Guests had their choice of strawberry, vanilla, or lemon slices from the towering confection.

CHEERS TO THE COUPLE

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour as everyone made their way to the Country Club via buses. Refreshing strawberry vodka sodas were served from a bar cart outfitted for the occasion.

Following Brooks’ inspiration, Jessika worked with the team at Tanarah Luxe Floral to create an elegant, garden-inspired backdrop in the same blue and pastel hues seen throughout the celebration.

Pink and navy tablecloths played off the colors of the grooms’ suits, while thistle and roses brought the palette into the floral design. Tanarah Luxe Floral also worked maroon and burgundy hues, some of Garrit’s favorites, into the arrangements. “We wanted it to fit the garden setting, and we trusted Tanarah to make it all a reality,” Daniel says.

T

hough Daniel Keeley and Garrit Johnson had talked about marriage in the three years they dated, Garrit was still completely taken by surprise when Daniel popped the question on a trip to Key West, Florida. “I turned around and he was down on one knee. I was in disbelief and kept asking if he was for real,” Garrit says. “Of course, the answer was easy.” “Our friend took pictures, and the whole restaurant was applauding when we came back from the pier,” Daniel adds. When they envisioned their big day, the couple’s first thought was to have a destination wedding in the special place where they got engaged. But as the guest list grew, they decided to wed somewhere closer to home. The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks became the obvious choice. “Since I’m a garden designer, it seemed perfect, and we both felt silly for not having thought

of it sooner,” Daniel says. They worked with wedding designer Amanda Reed to create the garden party of their dreams: a casual, comfortable atmosphere with good music, great drinks, and a sophisticated air. After exchanging vows under the garden’s grand arbor, the couple exited to a shower of rose petals, then enjoyed cocktails and a private walk before joining their guests for a reception under a giant sailcloth tent. Daniel and Garrit’s first dance was a mash-up of two versions of “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” which kicked off a night of dancing to Memphis band The Bouffants. “Our wedding was a great encapsulation of us: the music, the camaraderie, the drinks—which were delicious. It was perfect in a way that we are perfect together,” Daniel says. The couple are at home in Fayetteville and will enjoy a delayed honeymoon to Paris in 2024.

OH SO BRIGHT!

Hannah and Victor shared inspiration with their florist, The Flowerslinger, who interpreted it into a vivid, romantic bridal bouquet, a floor arrangement incorporating disco balls, and bud vases with stunning singular stems for the café tables. “They knocked it out of the park and exceeded our expectations with their creative designs and whimsy,” Hannah says.

annah Hughes had just moved from Texas to Bentonville and was navigating dating during the pandemic when she met Victor Roble through the dating app Hinge. The pair hit it off and dated for more than two years before Victor popped the question. Following a day of Hannah’s favorite things, including a trip to the Fayetteville Farmers Market and a cozy night at home, Victor gave her a jigsaw puzzle. “It was a picture of us, but Victor had the missing piece in the ring box!” Hannah says. Without hesitation, she said “yes.” Wanting a unique venue, the pair originally considered hosting their wedding in a local bookshop. However, with a growing guest list, planner Kasarah Tyson with KDT Brides suggested a larger location—the Onyx Coffee Lab headquarters. “Choosing Onyx was a nobrainer for us. We love the vibe there, love their coffee, and love that it's such a Northwest Arkansas-specific location,” Hannah says. The couple wanted “a fun, kind of disco-party vibe” that reflected how excited they were to be getting married. Working with Kasarah, they accomplished this with colorful blooms and a delicious, casual meal of pizza and salad followed by slices of cake decorated with the hues of the day. Hannah and Victor enjoyed a private last dance indoors before making their exit through a tunnel of friends showering them with sparkling silver party poppers. After a honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen, they are now at home in Fayetteville. Winter 2023 | weddingsinarkansas.com 49

THE ROBLES’ ADVICE TO COUPLES

“Plan some intentional time to connect with each other before and/or during the wedding day events. We grabbed a craft cocktail at Pinky Swear, a bar in the same building as our venue, as we waited for the ceremony to begin. Spending that time together allowed us to talk about the gravity and magic of the moment before seeing our wedding guests. It made us ten times more at ease and excited.”

hen Courtney Hunter met Jordan Hanberry at her apartment complex’s pool, the two hit it off almost immediately and began dating. Two years later, Jordan popped the question on a trip to California’s Yosemite National Park. “He proposed on mile 9 of the hike in the valley along a small stream,” Courtney recalls. “We were alone, and it was very special.” The couple began to make plans for a fall wedding a year and a half later. Wanting a unique location with beautiful scenery, they fell in love with Moss Mountain Farm. “It was the perfect spot given its landscaping and proximity to Little Rock,” Courtney says. They worked with planners Anna Dickinson and Katy Faulk of Perception by Anna Dickinson to create a “classic, timeless, and clean” aesthetic that flowed throughout the ceremony and reception. With Jordan’s uncle serving as their officiant, the couple exchanged vows in the ethereal setting before heading to a tented reception. “I wanted my florals to complement the natural beauty of the venue for the ceremony but make a statement in the tent for the reception,” Courtney says. “The Perception team and Silks A Bloom really made everything so beautiful.” As their celebration came to a close, rain began to fall—a sign of good luck on a wedding day. Their original exit by sparklers was traded for party batons. “It was even more fun that way!” Courtney says. After a wedding trip to Scotland, the couple are at home in Little Rock.

Invitation designer Jessie Fuchs created a suite that perfectly captured the spirit of the couple and the season with the Capital Hotel’s iconic tree appearing on the reception card. “My mom, Beverly Watkins, has an incredible eye for color and spent hours making sure the colors of the ribbon and fonts were exactly the right shade,” Anna says. “The whole color story came to life because of her exquisite eye for detail.”

SENTIMENTAL ROSES

rkansas native Anna Watkins met her Mississippi beau, Tyson Attaway, on a popular dating app while the two were living in Dallas. “We had matched multiple times and finally decided it was time to grab a drink at our favorite local spot,” Anna says. The two found the chemistry was as real in person as it was online and soon began dating. Wanting to surprise Anna with a proposal, Tyson planned a getaway to Austin disguised as an early Christmas present. He set up hikes for the day and told Anna they would be going out for drinks with friends that night. When an Uber dropped them off at what Anna describes as “an abandoned house and junkyard,” she was confused. Following Tyson, she made her way back to a stunning greenhouse that was staged for a proposal. After

she said “yes,” the couple popped a bottle of champagne and FaceTimed with family and friends. On the same weekend the following year, the couple exchanged vows at Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock. Playing to the season, bits of holiday flair were sprinkled throughout their big day with their reception venue, the Capital Hotel, setting the scene for a magical winter night. Guests were greeted by holiday characters on stilts before heading up to the balcony for poinsettia cocktails and the sounds of a string quartet. After dinner, they danced the night away to the sounds of the Walton Stout Band. “We love good music, food, and friends so it was a celebration we’ll never forget under the mistletoe and Christmas décor,” Anna says. Following a honeymoon in Funchal Madeira, the Attaways are now at home in Dallas. Winter 2023 | weddingsinarkansas.com 55

Since then, it has grown to be one of the biggest names in bridal jewelry in the state. “We have exclusive bridal brands that are the highest quality in the industry and have been our partners since the beginning,” says owner Brittany Adair. They are always looking for new ways to help clients; for example,

they recently launched the “bridal box,” which helps brides-to-be get connected with other local vendors in Northwest Arkansas. Another new addition is space available for customers to host small parties, such as bridal showers and viewing parties. As for current trends, Brittany says yellow gold is back in a big way. “Fancy cut diamonds are still trending, and unique stones other than

diamonds are really hot as well,” she says. They are also seeing an increase in interest around lab-created diamonds and vintage looks. “We are engaged with our customers to get them exactly what they want when searching for that very important purchase,” she says. “Jewelry is very much an emotional experience, and we guide you through it as a partner and trusted friend.”
