NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER:

(Photo: the Publisher’s Book of Poetry and Short Stories)

Thank you for coming here for the winter magazine--the first issue of the New Year! Now, my dear readers, I have something very important to tell you. On January 12, 2016 I will be going in for major neck surgery to repair lots of damage done when I fell down a flight of stairs in 1993 and when I fell on our cement garage floor in 2008. This means that I will not be able to come online afterwards. So I ask for your patience as I bring you this issue before my surgery. I am sorry to say, however, that I may not be able to publish the April-June 2016 magazine. It depends on how well I recover... Although I have both a desktop and laptop, most likely, I will not be able to use either while wearing a neck brace. Neck surgery is only Part One of all the surgeries that have to be done to fix the internal injuries I suffered from these falls--once I recover from the neck surgery, which should be about 6 months, I will be going in for back surgery then knee surgery. Besides the upcoming Presidential election, surgeries are what I have to look forward to in the year 2016. However, I am okay with this because I need to have them done; as I wrote in my story titled “Imagine If You Can…” (A story which I also shared on my blog but which is not published in my book: http://www.thecatsmeowforwritersreaders.com/publishers-blog.html )

2 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

Why do I need to have them done, you ask (if you have not yet read “Imagine If You Can…”)? Because I have been living in pain 22+ years now— after two falls I took when I was in my 30’s—and I am sick of using pain medication when I know these surgeries will enable me to not have to use pain medication anymore. I will come back online when I am able to. Please know that I will miss you and wish only the best for you in this “new” year. In the meantime, enjoy the January-March magazine issue. And if you would like to read five-star poetry and short stories, do purchase my book, ‘Mirrored Images’ on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, Lulu.com, or wherever books are sold; Amazon.com is actually best to buy from because their reviews—more so than Barnes&Noble.com or Lulu.com—can bring an author to “Bestseller” status. Thank you for your continued support. In this issue there are a couple of thought-provoking and emotional short stories, one helpful article and pleasingly gratifying poetry by my many contributors, and the book authors and literary journals in the ‘Off The Press! Corner’ showing you’re their wonderful books, newsletters, journals or magazines and where you can purchase your very own copies of their work:

DEBORAH H. BATEMAN AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF THE ‘DAILY BIBLE READING SERIES:’ Dear Rosanne, I wanted to let you know that I have published the next book in the “Daily Bible Reading Series.” The Book of Psalms: Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman About the book: The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman is part of the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms. Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: “Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet.” The book of Psalms is one of Deborah's favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies. The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups. Go to: http://amazon.com/dp/B00UY7H5DE Get your copy now! ---------------------------------Have a blessed day,

The Best Christmas Gift ©Joseph J. Mazzella Author of “Walking the Path of Love” and “A Journey of Love”

THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT I EVER GOT WAS BOTH EARLY AND LATE. My first born child came into this world on December 16th, nine days before Christmas. He was supposed to be a Thanksgiving baby, however, when my wife went into labor 3 weeks late he had to be delivered by an emergency Caesarean section. My first word when I saw him wasn’t even a word but a sigh of relief, love, and joy. My early Christmas present had a red, splotchy face from being overdue but it was washed several times over the next few days with happy tears from me, my wife, and several grandparents.

My son was named Joseph John after me and “J.J.” as he was called soon became the most cuddled and photographed child around. He was the first grandchild on both sides of the family and spent his first Christmas going from arms to loving arms as everyone wanted a chance to hold him. I looked forward to a blessed life watching my first born grow up to be a strong and smart man.

That dream, though, wasn’t to turn out the way I thought it would. As my son entered his second year we realized that his language wasn’t developing as it should. He only seemed interested in a few things and would jump up and down over and over to amuse himself. We finally got him tested but were given no answers. We were only told that he wasn’t normal. It was raining that day as my wife and I drove home and finally we pulled the car over, held each other, and added our own tears to the storm. 17 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

With the end of that dream came the birth of another. We decided to find out exactly what was “different” about our son to do all we could to help him become all he could be. Soon a local Doctor saw what the specialists hadn’t. Our son had Autism. In that day very little was known about Autism or what could be done to treat it. My wife and I read every article and researched every treatment there was to help our son. We put our anger at God aside and asked instead for His love and guidance to help us with our boy. We enrolled J.J. in Special Education at school and worked with him every day at home. We were blessed to get a loving, kind-hearted, and patient personal-aide for him at school and she became like a second mother to him. It was by her side during another Christmas season that my boy spoke his first sentence about the beautiful Christmas tree at the school.

As we continued to work with my son I noticed something else too; his loving spirit was also working on us. His smile was contagious, his cheer was infectious, and his innocent love was purifying. Over the years I became a better, kinder, more loving, and more spiritual person just by being around him. He taught me so much about love, so much about joy, and so much about embracing life. His language continued to improve and he became beloved by his teachers, fellow students, and especially by the school football and basketball teams where he worked as the equipment manager. His loving presence became a comfort to my days. His gentleness helped me to deal with money struggles and career problems. His sweetness helped me when his younger brother was born with an even more severe form of Autism and I gave up teaching to care for them both.

Now as the best Christmas gift I ever got approaches his 28th Christmas with me I have realized that he is the gift that keeps on giving. Like a ray of sunshine he brightens the day of everyone he meets. Like an earth angel he touches the souls of others with his gentle love. He shares his smile with everyone and calls everyone by name. He goes through his life making this Earth a little more like 18 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

Heaven. He lives out God’s dream for him which is a far better dream than mine ever was.

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas. May your Christmas and all of your days be full of the best gift there is, the gift my two special sons give me every day--the gift of LOVE. God bless you always. Copyright © December 14, 2015 Joseph J. Mazzella.

The End is The Beginning ©Joseph J. Mazzella Author of “Walking the Path of Love” and “A Journey of Love”

WITH WINTER COMING ON I FINALLY DECIDED TO REPLACE THE worn and torn blanket and quilt on my bed. Years of washing and dogs and cats jumping on them had left them threadbare and full of holes. I found a nice blanket cheap at a local store and dug an old quilt out of an older dresser in my room. When I looked at the quilt, though, I noticed that underneath the corner was a piece of tape with my Dad’s name written on it. Then I remembered that this was the same quilt he used at the nursing home during the last months of his life. I pealed the tape and held it in my hand. I looked up to Heaven and smiled. I didn’t think Dad would mind me using his old quilt now. I knew that he was in a place of never ending warmth, love, and light. Spreading out my Dad’s quilt on my bed I remembered the greatest paradox of life: the end is really the beginning. Everything we go 19 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

through in this life is a preparation for the greater life to come. Everything we face in this world can help us to become better, stronger, kinder, and closer to God. The love we choose in this life is the love we carry with us into the next. Knowing all this doesn’t diminish your love for life here on Earth either. It intensifies it instead. Life here may be momentary, temporary, fleeting and fragile, but it is a gift from our Heavenly Father.

And how we live it is our gift to Him.

My advice then is to live like today is your last day. Wake up in the morning with your voice and soul saying: “Good morning God. I love You too and I thank You for my life.” Go through the day with an open heart that gives your love away freely. Embrace all the joy that the day gives you and share all of that joy with others. Help all the people you can. Learn all you can.

Cherish every second you are given. Make your day a quilt of love that warms everyone you meet. Then your last day will be your best day and your end a new beginning. Copyright © December 7, 2015 Joseph J. Mazzella.

There is No Religion Higher than Truth ©Don Crawford

INTRODUCTION: ALL WE NEED TO DO IS READ THE DAILY MEDIA OUTPUT TO REALIZE the whole world is in chaos and disarray. Greed and endless desires reign supreme and the great majority of mankind fall daily to the prey of those Brothers of the Shadow, the Black Magicians, whose forces of darkness are leading us down the low road of despair and keeping us captives in the world of effects and illusion. And why should we allow them to do that? Our ignorance is pervasive. The time is well passed when we need to rise up against these enemies of humanity who use us as fodder to feed their greedy, selfish and selfpreserving interest. There has never been in our world a greater need of a guide to Righteousness and Altruism; the need for the daily practice of Universal Brotherhood. DISCUSSION: Realizing that there currently exist in our western Judeo-Christian culture a major resistance to the very name of Buddhism, all that is being requested in this essay is to not reject these magnificent concepts out of hand and at least consider them as “working hypotheses.” One of the tenets of the Ancient Wisdom, which Buddhism contributes to in small part, is that no one is required to give up one’s current beliefs or opinions. Even Gautama Buddha stated clearly that if what one hears of his concepts do not ring true in the very depths of one’s inner being, they are to be disregarded; meaning the person has not yet evolved sufficiently to resonate with these concepts. How many westerners are aware that the Gautama Buddha is, so far, the most spiritually advanced entity in this world period? He is 22 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

even more spiritually advanced than the Christ, who is his younger spiritual brother; a hard truth for any westerner to accept.

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS OF THE GAUTAMA BUDDHA: The Buddha’s approach to wisdom is quite simple. He wished to help humanity to acquire freedom from sorrow and pain and the necessary rounds of incarnation. To do so, he realized the need of humanity to destroy all ignorance. Ignorance, he said, produces desires. Unsatisfied desires are the cause of human misery, endless pain and suffering. To get rid of sorrow and pain, one has to escape the cycle of Birth, Death, and Rebirth, which the Ancient Wisdom calls Reincarnation. To escape from endless reincarnations, one must extinguish desires. To extinguish desires one must destroy all ignorance.

THE DESTRUCTION OF HUMAN IGNORANCE: The method he advocated for destroying all human ignorance is to attain the wisdom of altruism and universal Brotherhood and overcome all desires. He also advocated the gaining of high intelligence, by which he meant wisdom in thought and behavior, and the destruction of the lowly personal pleasures, meaning all worldly desires. Once these required goals are achieved the individual will attain Nirvana, which is defined as the extraction of the Soul from Matter and an end to earthly reincarnations. He also stated, “Cease from all sin; gain virtue; purify the heart.”

According to both the Buddha and the Ancient Wisdom, sin is defined as creating an imbalance in nature by trying to defy the Laws 23 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

of Nature, and going against the spiritual evolution of humanity and opposing the Will of God. Righteousness is defined as living fully in accordance with the Laws of Nature, maintaining nature’s balance and beauty, and doing everything one is capable of to advance humanity upward on the evolutionary arc. There is no doubt this requires a high order of human self-control of all aspects of human endeavor. His response to this need he called the Eightfold Path.

GAUTAMA BUDDHA’S EIGHTFOLD PATH: The first of these Paths he called, Right Knowledge or Belief. In essence, this would require some awareness of the concepts of the Ancient Wisdom, and especially an acceptance of reincarnation and karma that are of such importance to an understanding of our true human identity and what LIFE is all about. The second of his Paths he called Right Thought, which follows from Right Knowledge and also allows for those Paths which follow: Right Speech and Right Action; the third and fourth of his Paths.

The fifth of his Paths he called, Right Occupation. What he meant by this is that a person in gaining his livelihood should do no harm to any other person. Occultists call this harmlessness toward others ahimsa, a Sanskrit term. And, the term has a wider application than just in occupation. It is to be applied in all manners of personal interactions. The sixth of the Paths, he called Right Endeavor, meaning applying a sense of Brotherhood in all our daily activities. The whole idea of Brotherhood is the awareness we are all part of a much larger whole and there is no real separation in our universe. And whatever one engages in, to do so whole-heartedly.

24 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

The seventh Path he called Right Memory or Remembrance, which refers to our need to remember only those positive things from our past and never to harp on or reinforce the negative or unpleasant experience of our lives, past or present. We need to remain positive and hopeful in all we do. The eighth Path he called, Right Meditation, which he defined for his followers as meditating daily on one’s body, one’s emotions, one’s mental creations (thought-forms) and recalling the Buddha Dharma doctrine, which is the bases of his concepts. Can any intelligent and right thinking individual find fault with these simple rules for human life? To follow them in earnest would bring an end to most or all of a human entity’s pain and suffering and eventually gain for that person enlightenment, which is what the word Buddha means. Buddhism is not to be considered a religion; it is a purified moral philosophy.

The follower of Dharma Buddha does not rely on a Supreme Being, Who overshadows humanity, but relies solely on the inner growth of the individual alone; it assumes an enormous self-responsibility. The Buddha never intended to be a personage of worship; only a human being whose Self-discovered truths were to be emulated for the betterment of the individual and others.

Coping with Older People on Holiday ŠBrenda Campbell (aka B. Campbell)

ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE TO SEE LOTS OF HOLIDAY ARTICLES ON the subject of how to cope with babies and young children when away, the subject of elderly relatives seems to be much less frequently discussed.

This is a generational thing because in the past older family members typically stayed living with their family and were looked after including during the holidays. Practices have changed a lot over the last half-century but even so, many people today face the challenges of taking elderly relatives on holiday with them.

Here are a few general thoughts and ideas that might prove useful.

THE WEATHER It hopefully goes without saying that the older people can be particularly vulnerable to chillier temperatures and draughts etc.

So it might make sense to select a location where the weather is more or less guaranteed to be warm and sunny at specific times of the year. 28 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

ACCOMMODATION If your elderly relative has limited mobility then obviously you will be fully aware of the need to select appropriate accommodations.

However, what is sometimes overlooked is that your relative might not be able to accompany you and the rest of the family on your various daily activities. It would be unreasonable though to expect the rest of the family not to go out or to have one member always left behind to look after the individual concerned.

That might not be necessary though in situations where the accommodation is safe, comfortable and well equipped with things like TV entertainment and above all, a decent outlook.

Many elderly people will be perfectly happy to stay in such accommodations and allow the rest of the family to stretch their muscles in more strenuous activities during the day.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS Look very carefully at the bedroom sizes and dimensions.

Sometimes limited mobility and access in the case of older members of your party may mean that, upon arrival, you discover that they need to have the biggest and most conveniently located bedroom. That might be an unpleasant surprise if it means one person is occupying a double room and two others are trying to share a single.

29 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

Remember also that older people may tend to like to eat and get to bed earlier. That might be a challenge if you’d planned for them to sleep on a fold-down couch in the living room because it means everybody else will need to go to bed at the same time.

As a final and slightly delicate point, remember that older people sometimes need access to the bathroom more frequently during the night than younger folk. So, you’ll need to select accommodation where their designated bedroom is relatively conveniently placed in that respect.

UPPER FLOORS Even the most modern lifts in hotels and apartment blocks can break down.

That’s never amusing but it will be even less so if you have someone with you who has limited mobility. So it might make sense to aim for ground-floor accommodations if you have elderly people traveling with you.

SUMMARY The good news is with a little bit of additional forethought and perhaps some rather more careful holiday planning around accommodation layout than you would normally engage in, taking elderly relatives with you can be perfectly feasible and great fun.

PATCHES MY BEAUTIFUL CALICO CAT HAS BEEN GONE A YEAR already. Her ashes in its beautiful tin sits on my desk. Her memory is fresh in my mind every day and my wife and I miss her.

We have four cats now but Patches was with us fifteen glorious years and our hearts are heavy with sadness from her loss. She was the big mama cat—kind of the boss of the others she lived with. She was so loveable and loved us deeply I'm sure. Now I pray that she has been taken by our good Lord and runs about within the gates of Heaven. God Bless Patches, With Love from Mom and Dad. Cat Laugh ©Samantha Gee

MY CAT HAS KILLED HER SENSE OF HUMOR (IT’S BURIED IN THE yard.) She sits by it and laughs sometimes, But the sound is short and hard

her mouth curls up as if in triumph—it makes me quake inside all good humor has been clawed out. The vital part has died

(I did once see her laughing at the statue of a cat but what humor was in the sculpture, that she should laugh at that?)

I must remember to hold my smile, even if at my own play she will not join me in scrambling romps—she’ll pointedly turn away!

My cat can never careless be; she is piercing in her poise an awful, restrained, librarian glare at any careless noise

I've started glancing around corners; her eyes are watchful pennies But she strolls around me so politely—like an evening walk with sentries

A Fiction Medical Thriller

By SANDRA L. HOYNACKI On Call

MIRRORED IMAGES

138 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

Author, Founder and Publisher ROSANNE CATALANO (RC KAYLA), is pleased to introduce her book Mirrored Images, which is a quick read at 98 pages! It is a book containing the author’s collection of short stories and poems (some fiction, some fact) written for your reading enjoyment and for those who love guessing games!

“Mirrored Images” by Rosanne Catalano begins with a poem about, and dedication to, her late father and still-living-mother and goes into a short story about an experience with bullying in the eighth grade of school to being saved by a guardian angel when the story character was in her mid-30’s. An interesting read in which you, the reader, may want to guess which of her stories are fact or fiction…

Reviews for ‘Mirrored Images’ by Rosanne Catalano: By Mark Rubinstein on Sept 19, 2014: ***** “I read Mirrored Images by Rosanne Catalano in two sittings. This is an intriguing collection of short stories (10 in all) spearheaded by a lovely poem. In my mind, they are all loosely interconnected, and the author invites the reader to guess which of the stories is true and which is false. To my way of thinking, they are all products of the author's vivid imagination, mixed with elements of true life, as is the case for any author in virtually any fictional genre. Where true life leaves off and fiction begins is always, at best, murky guesswork. The important thing is that Ms. Catalano writes beautifully. I was captured by her prose, and am waiting eagerly for her forthcoming tale, which will be a crime novel. Mirrored Images gets five well-deserved stars.” --Mark Rubinstein; Crime Fiction & Nonfiction Author and Psychologist.

***** “I purchased a copy of Rosanne Catalano’s book, Mirrored Images, and this short collection of short stories (you will have to try real hard to decide which are fact or fiction), articles and poetry, both touched my heart and made me smile. Rosanne’s book Mirrored Images is truly a great read! It touched me because of the love shown for her parents, God, and her husband. It touched me because I was the kid with glasses who was bullied and picked on and I could feel Rosanne's pain when it happened to her. It touched me because I have lost my parents and her tribute to her father, and mother, brought back all of the good times and love I had with/for my own parents. It touched me because Rosanne, as I feel so many of us are but never put it into words so eloquently, is a survivor. I believe we all have guardian angels and Mirrored Images proves it to all who will listen. No one but angels could have saved her from bullies in junior high school, have looked over her until she found the perfect mate, and still guide her to this day in her writing craft. These are stories we should not only want to read, enjoy reading, but they are stories we all need to hear. I get a glimpse of the love and courage that Rosanne shows, and shares, in her magazine--and our most welcome online correspondence. Rosanne is writing a continuation of Mirrored Images titled Escape and Redemption. I can't wait to read that! But first, my readers, you must read Mirrored Images.” --Barbara Deming; Author, Writing Instructor, Publisher, and Blogger.

***** “I read Rosanne Catalano’s book Mirrored Images and I love it!!! She had somewhat of a hard life in some areas and a good one in others. The author had a lot of heartache, with the loss of friends early in her life, and the ridicule and horrendous behaviors of other kids when she was in junior high school. Though it sounds like she had a most wonderful Dad and Grandmother too; her grandmother reminded me so much of my own Grandmother who passed away last year! I enjoyed very much reading all of her different short stories and the poems she included. I really loved reading about her little cheese episode in ‘Christmas With Grandma,’ and her little sneaky trek to the store thinking she could hurriedly fix what she had EATEN…LOL!!!! I LOVED IT--------- And I can still see Rosanne so clearly eating all of the 140 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

cheese!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ROSANNE CATALANO all the way around! I will get her next book soon...I like this book’s title by the way, and the picture of Rosanne on the back cover; she looks so relaxed.” --Sandra L Hoynacki; Author, Poet and retired-Nurse.

**** “Rosanne Catalano’s book, Mirrored Images, was a delightful read! I LOVED IT!!!! IF the abuse at school and all was about her, Rosanne has become a beautiful person and woman. I'm so glad she now has a wonderful spouse and her life is filled with love.” --Carol Dee Meeks; Writer and Poet.

Rosanne Catalano’s next book, Escape and Redemption, will be a continuation of Mirrored Images—which will start off where her last story “Bags to Riches” left off—only as a crime fiction novel rather than a collection of her poetry and short stories. She will be writing as “RC Kayla,” her pen name.

Escape & Redemption by RC Kayla Coming Soon!

Synopsis of Escape & Redemption: Rachelle Norris is escaping a painful past. She lands in the State of Delaware and meets Marie Glück, a homeless woman whom Rachelle saves from dying of a heart attack; changing Marie Glück’s life forever. 141 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine January-March 2016

Both Rachelle Norris and Marie Glück are redeemed from their pasts after opening up a small business and fighting for it against those who practice bullying, imminent domain takeovers, and murder.
