Rosanne & Her Fur Baby Sasha Upon Arriving in Florida [Jan 12, 2016]
Rosanne’s Book of Poems & Short Stories [Re-Released 2013]
Rosanne Today [Apr 27, 2016]
LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER: Thank you for coming here for the spring / summer magazine--the second issue for 2016. I almost wasn’t able to bring The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers to you for April… the reason? As some of my dear readers know from my Facebook posts ( http://www.facebook.com/rosanne.catalano ), I am now residing in Pompano Beach, Florida in the County of Broward. Florida definitely agrees with me—the sunshine makes me smile, laugh, & love. However, the template for this magazine is still on the desktop computer that was in New York; I wasn’t able to retrieve anything when I suddenly left my now-ex-husband—a day before I was scheduled to have neck surgery—on Jan 11th. I had to cancel surgery in New York and start all over with a Neurologist and Neurosurgeon here in Florida because my now-ex-husband fell off the wagon shortly after he retired last June; he had started drinking from morning to night until he passed out. Since I would have needed him to take care of me once my mother went back to Florida—she was only going to stay 10 days to help me recover from neck surgery then fly back to her home in 2 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
Florida—I realized after 18 years that he was incapable of taking care of me. Yet I had taken care of “him” for most of the eighteen years; making me a Caregiver to a very ill man who also ended up getting alcohol-related Dementia. So I am now in Florida with my Sasha (the ex-husband had begged me to leave my Cordy behind for him to take care of so I did…) Both Sasha and I are now living with my mother and her two dogs while the ex-husband is still residing in Queens, NYC. Bottom line is that I am happy once again and I love living in south Florida. Plus, I hit the jackpot in being surrounded by my loving, caring and supportive family. The neck surgery will be done here in Florida. But I must first get my dental work completed before the Neurosurgeon will even operate on my neck. Neck surgery is only Part One of all the surgeries that still have to be done to fix the internal injuries I got when I fell years ago. Once I recover from the neck surgery, which should be about 6 months or more, I will be going in for back surgery then knee surgery. I’ve avoided these surgeries long enough. And I did know this day would finally come so my mindset is positive at this time. Yes, I did write a story titled “Imagine If You Can…” about the main fall down stairs that first caused my internal injuries (a story which I also shared on my blog but which is not published in my book: http://www.thecatsmeowforwritersreaders.com/publishers-blog.html ) Why do I need to have neck, back, and knee surgeries done? Because I have been living in pain 23 years now and I am sick of taking pain medication & wearing pain patches when I know the surgeries will enable me to not have to use Tramadol and Butrans patches anymore; thank God I’m no longer taking Vicodin for the pain. I will come back online after I have fully recovered from neck surgery, which should be sometime in September 2016. Please know that I will miss you while I’m recovering and wish only the best for all of you. In the meantime, enjoy the April-June magazine issue. And if you would like to read five-star poetry and short stories, do purchase my book, ‘Mirrored Images’ on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, Lulu.com, or wherever books are sold; Amazon.com is actually best to buy from because their reviews— more so than Barnes&Noble.com or Lulu.com—can bring an author to “Bestseller” status. Thank you for your continued support. Having support means a lot to authors, writers, editors and publishers. Last but not least, in honor of “National Poetry Month,” which is every year in April, in this issue there are a lot pleasingly gratifying poems—some in honor of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day—and a couple of thought-provoking 3 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016

SPECIAL BULLETIN BOARD Sharing A Letter from the “Academy of American Poets” to Me: Dear Rosanne, As Chairman of the Academy, I am glad you became an Associate Member. In joining us now, you entered into a new and exciting relationship with the best American poets of today and tomorrow. You have become an important champion of the essential contribution that poets make to our lives and our culture. And, because of your acceptance of our invite to become an Associate Member, you will now receive public recognition for your support along with a number of special benefits that bring you closer to the center of the poetry world. Founded in 1934, the Academy of American Poets is our nation’s largest member-supported organization advocating for poets and poetry.
5 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
Since then, our programs, prizes, and publications have helped to advance the work of such indispensable poets as W. H. Auden, Elizabeth Bishop, Lucille Clifton, Robert Frost, Robert Hayden, Langston Hughes, Robert Lowell, Marianne Moore, William Carlos Williams, and hundreds of others, well-known and not-so-well-known. And over more than eight decades, the Academy of American Poets has earned its reputation as one of our nation’s essential cultural institutions. By joining us today as an Associate Member, you have become an important patron of this essential art form that, without your help, cannot be selfsustaining. As an Associate Member, you make possible a wide variety of Academy programs that help bring poetry to life for literally millions of individuals each year. Your support helps provide fellowships and awards that support poets at all stages of their careers, particularly new writers who are likely to become poetry’s acclaimed voices in the years ahead. You help us to sustain National Poetry Month, which this April marks its 20th anniversary of introducing poetry to new readers and is now the largest literary celebration in the United States. You also ensure that we can continue our increasingly popular Poem-ADay series, in which we publish new poems by today’s distinguished poets and distribute them via email, social media, and newspaper syndication to more than 350,000 readers. And you help us to encourage poetry readings across the United States, creating a greater appreciation and a broader audience for contemporary poets and poetry. As the Academy of American Poets continues to expand these programs, it means a great deal to us, and to poets throughout the country, that you became an Associate Member.
6 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
Most importantly, you have the personal enjoyment and satisfaction that comes from being a part of a great effort to champion our nation’s poets and poetry. Thank you for your support as an Associate Member. Sincerely, Michael Jacobs, Chairman.

DEBORAH H. BATEMAN AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF THE ‘DAILY BIBLE READING SERIES:’ Dear Rosanne, I wanted to let you know that I have published the next book in the “Daily Bible Reading Series.” The Book of Psalms: Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman About the book: The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman is part of the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms. Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: “Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet.” The book of Psalms is one of Deborah's favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies. The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.
The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or 18 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups. Go to: http://amazon.com/dp/B00UY7H5DE Get your copy now! ---------------------------------Have a blessed day,

My Parents ŠDARREN B. RANKINS aka POET RANKINS STANDING BY MY SIDE, my two wonderful parents. With the love of God, together they created me. All that I have given the world has stemmed from both of them. My loving Mother, whose pain has not gone unheard. A strong woman, whom I adore for a lifetime. My mother, whose words of the birds and the bees came while she served breakfast, with that springtime smile on her face. My mother had way of getting those messages across without landing a hand. My mother, a beautiful woman. My father, a man who seems to have the answers to all those untold secrets. With his hands, a handyman who could fix the world problems, if given the chance. My father, whose words could make a strong man cry, but at that same moment finish with a smile. Stories of pure love. 21 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016

The Beauty of the Soul ©JOSEPH J. MAZZELLA Author of “Walking the Path of Love” and “A Journey of Love”
I WAS WALKING INTO THE STORE TODAY TO BUY A BAR OF SOAP. I had no idea why I had forgotten it on my regular shopping trip but my soap bar was now down to the size of a quarter so I had to get one. I wasn’t in a hurry so instead of heading right to it, I found myself walking among the aisles amazed at all the products. There were several brands of soap and bottles of liquid soap too. There were shampoos for oily, dry, and baby’s hair. There were so many types of toothpaste and mouthwash. There were shaving creams, shaving lotions, and aftershaves. There were acne pads, deodorants, and body sprays. There were hand lotions, face lotions, and body lotions. There were hair dyes, lip sticks, eyeliners, foundations, and blush. There were dozens upon dozens of items all designed to keep us looking young and beautiful. As I walked among them, though, I kept remembering a picture I had seen the other day. It was of an old woman. She was so ancient that it was impossible to guess what her age might be. Her thin gray hair was pulled back on her head. Her skin had grown coarse and leathery. Her forehead, eyes, nose and cheeks had the deepest of wrinkles. All of her teeth were gone except for one small one in her lower jaw. By all of our modern day beauty standards she would have been called ugly. Yet, when I saw the sparkle in her eyes and the happiness in her smile I could tell how beautiful she was. She had lived. She had loved. And her face was a testament to that.
30 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
Saint Augustine wrote that “Love is the beauty of the soul.” That beauty doesn’t just stay in the soul, however. It shines forth in our faces and in our lives. It radiates out in everything we say, everything we do, and every smile we share. It is seen by God and everyone else in this world. Fill your soul with love then. Fill your life with living. Fill your days with joy. Make yourself beautiful from the inside out, today, tomorrow, and forever.

IT WAS OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO. MY YOUNG FAMILY AND I HAD just moved into the house I live in now. I could hear my children playing in my son’s bedroom while I washed the breakfast dishes in the kitchen sink. Our television was on the country music video channel and I was humming along to the tunes while I scrubbed the frying pan. Suddenly, I felt a gentle tug on the leg of my blue jeans. I looked down and saw my little daughter looking up at me with her sparkling blue-grey eyes. She had snuck back into the kitchen unheard. I smiled down at her, dried my hands, reached down and picked her up. I held her in my arms and we swayed back and forth for a few minutes to the music coming from the TV. Then she giggled, gave my neck a big squeeze, and motioned that she wanted down

again. I gave her a final spin around, set her down, and watched as she laughed and ran down the hallway to play again. I knew that she probably wouldn’t remember this moment, but I made sure to place it carefully in the treasure chest of my soul. Even then I was aware of how fast she was growing up and knew that if I blinked I would miss it. I was right too. The days flew by far too fast. Soon she was too “big” to dance with Dad anymore and hugs and kisses had to be done in private so I wouldn’t embarrass her in front of her friends. Before I knew it she was in high school, then college, and then living on her own. Yet, when I look at my adult daughter these days part of me still sees that bright eyed little girl so full of laughter and love. Time in this life is brief. Always remember then to take the time to dance. Take the time to love. Take the time to pray. Take the time to laugh and to sing. Take the time to give hugs and kisses. Take the time to watch the sunset. Take the time to thank God for every day you have. Take the time to cherish each moment you are given. Life is too short not to be lived in joy.

Mother’s Day Deconstructed ©MICHELLE VIOLETTO PLEASE DON’T WAKE ME UP GETTING YOUR FATHER OUT OF BED to help you cook "the" breakfast. I'm in the same bedroom and can hear you whispering and then you say to me, "Mom don't get up, go back to sleep." Easier said than done. Trust me. The breakfast is planned like a culinary secret mission, as if they were flying to South America to pick the coffee beans and harvest the eggs from a free range farm. There are few things I don't like, but they seem to make my least favorite. I get pancakes, but this time they are buckwheat pancakes. Talk about a distinctive flavor. Were they trying to conjure days from long ago, pioneer days, pot belly stoves and log cabins or were they just concerned about my gluten intake? Activities and food choices should reflect the honoree. I would like to go to a museum in NYC, and not on the suggested hike on a mountain side. My family forgot I have a fear of heights. MOMA and The Met would be delightful indulgences. We compromise and stay home. I am told not to clean anything on this sacred day which is ludicrous, because I know what awaits me if I take the lazy approach. It will be a tornado of a mess that will surely anger me greatly the very next day. So I make the bed, do some laundry and straighten the living room. By midday my family has forgotten their no cleaning rule. Conversations should be vetted. Having a conversation about finances is not the best choice for the day's topic, in fact it is quite possibly one of the worst. I want you to lie to me, save me the stress for the day. Today, if we must celebrate, I want to be blissfully 35 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
ignorant. We can talk about payment due dates tomorrow when it's not my big day. While lying around all day, I take a look at social media, and I get more annoyed. Posts on Facebook for the most part are competitive declarations detailing exactly how other mothers were made to feel special and loved. Everyone's family resembles June Cleaver's, the archetypal suburban family. Mine doesn't, so I'm a little concerned and I try not to compare. Logging off for the rest of the day. I know I'm not a superhero and no one thinks I am, so I don't believe the Mother's Day hype the Hallmark cards propagandize. Thank me a little over time. If every day could be Mother's Day, just a little bit, with an occasional thank you and an appreciative glance, I could be persuaded to enjoy my family fawning over me for one day. I may even learn to love pancakes.

Darren B. Rankins: A Man on a Mission Darren B. Rankins is a poet, an author, a professional photographer, and a public speaker. He has received prestigious awards for his poetry, and his works have been featured in several media outlets such as The Nashville
Pride, Christian Focus, and The Daily News Journal. While gifted, he boasts of a greater call—spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Rankins’s spiritual awakening began simply by asking God if He was real. The encounter changed his life. “I remember seeing a glaring powerful light that filled the entire room,” he says. “This light was so powerful it changed my entire outlook personally and exclusively [which] enables me to seek God and continue the work of evangelizing those I come in contact with––anywhere and simply everywhere.” In 1995, Rankins launched a t-shirt giveaway ministry called PureThoughts. Each t-shirt displays a Scripture. He chose this method because of the spiritual effect on the person wearing the t-shirt and others viewing or reading the message. People are encouraged to change or to grow spiritually. To date, over 1,500 t-shirts have been given away worldwide. He recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to donate tshirts to Nashville’s homeless population. Even with his great success, he is setting higher goals. Rankins plans to expand the ministry to distribute other novelty items and seeks to establish his own nonprofit to engage others in his vision of reaching out to the lost. After participating in a walk/run in Rutherford County, where his t-shirts were distributed and worn by many, Rankins wants to have his shirts worn at more Christian gatherings, especially here in Nashville. It is his hope that Nashville will even host a similar event in the future, “We have a walk/run for everything else, why not for Jesus,” he says. Rankins has given countless hours to humbly serving God with his talents. He says, “You must be in the will of God in any ministry to glorify God and God alone.” by Latresa Witherspoon @lwitherspoon ================================================================

Nashville Artist Raises Funds and Faith with Launch of Crowdfunding Campaign Photographer and Poet Darren Rankins Continues Quest to Donate Inspirational T-Shirts to Nashville’s Homeless and Nonprofits NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Local artist Darren B. Rankins is spreading messages of hope and love with his collection of faith-based t-shirts and his actions. His recently launched crowdfunding campaign has raised over 10 percent of its $7,000 goal to donate t-shirts to members of Nashville’s homeless population, the Salvation Army, Feed the Children and other local organizations.
Rankins is a published poet, photographer and the founder of Pure Thoughts, a Christian based movement committed to feeding and clothing the homeless and supporting local nonprofits with free photography services. With the help of supporters of his crowdfunding campaign, he recently donated 50 t-shirts to the Nashville Rescue Mission.
Rankins first came up with the idea of Pure Thoughts when he was inspired by his belief that all people can co-exist together. “By focusing on God first and thinking the best of each person we meet, those positive actions can make a real difference,” he said. His initial focus was using his talent as a poet to express his love for God and to be an inspiration to others. He has published three books of poetry, Pure Thoughts Vol. 1-3, and is working on Vol 4. Rankins received the Margaret Smith Award for Dedication to Poetry from Bridge Your Soulful Journey, a local not for profit organization founded to recognize poetic excellence, in 2010.
While he continued to achieve success with his writing, he knew he wanted to have a greater effect on people. “I knew that my poetry was helping to 42 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
inspire people, but I wanted another way to spread a message of hope,” said Rankins.
It was then he came up with his idea of using t-shirts as a way to not only help advance his message but to also help with clothing those in need.
He describes his shirt designs as a combination of original poems, beautiful graphics, and timely Bible verses. “It is my belief that when a person reads the word of God in large print, there is a positive connection,” Rankins explained. “Seeing the word of God is transformative and can change someone’s thoughts and actions from negative to positive.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: ROSE ANNA SCHOENE was a native New Yorker who made her writing debut with ‘Absolutely the Last Resort,’ a charming and nostalgic family-oriented book, which fictionalizes many of
the
author’s personal experiences owning a resort with her husband, brother, sister and parents in the Catskill Mountains of New York for over 30 years. That resort was called ‘The Jolly House.’
That book reflected just one aspect of the author’s life and creative talents, and introduced us to her artistic and comedic nature in life.
She had a writing style that is both entertaining and uplifting which reflected Rose Anna’s true writing persona; yet she proved the versatility of her literary scope with her second novel, ‘Where Are You?,’ which offers a serious, dramatic and paranormal-love storyline, and her third novel, ‘But! I’ve Always Loved You.’
RIP author, artist and Rosanne Catalano’s cousin, Rose Anna Schoene (aka Rose Anna Infranco); Born Mar 1, 1925 – Died October 17, 2014. You will never be forgotten. And you are still greatly loved and missed.

MIRRORED IMAGES
137 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
Author, Founder and Publisher ROSANNE CATALANO (RC KAYLA), is pleased to introduce her book Mirrored Images, which is a quick read at 98 pages! It is a book containing the author’s collection of short stories and poems (some fiction, some fact) written for your reading enjoyment and for those who love guessing games!
“Mirrored Images” by Rosanne Catalano begins with a poem about, and dedication to, her late father and still-living-mother and goes into a short story about an experience with bullying in the eighth grade of school to being saved by a guardian angel when the story character was in her mid-30’s. An interesting read in which you, the reader, may want to guess which of her stories are fact or fiction…
Reviews for ‘Mirrored Images’ by Rosanne Catalano: By Mark Rubinstein on Sept 19, 2014: ***** “I read Mirrored Images by Rosanne Catalano in two sittings. This is an intriguing collection of short stories (10 in all) spearheaded by a lovely poem. In my mind, they are all loosely interconnected, and the author invites the reader to guess which of the stories is true and which is false. To my way of thinking, they are all products of the author's vivid imagination, mixed with elements of true life, as is the case for any author in virtually any fictional genre. Where true life leaves off and fiction begins is always, at best, murky guesswork. The important thing is that Ms. Catalano writes beautifully. I was captured by her prose, and am waiting eagerly for her forthcoming tale, which will be a crime novel. Mirrored Images gets five well-deserved stars.” --Mark Rubinstein; Crime Fiction & Nonfiction Author and Psychologist.

***** “I purchased a copy of Rosanne Catalano’s book, Mirrored Images, and this short collection of short stories (you will have to try real hard to decide which are fact or fiction), articles and poetry, both touched my heart and made me smile. Rosanne’s book Mirrored Images is truly a great read! It touched me because of the love shown for her parents, God, and her husband. It touched me because I was the kid with glasses who was bullied and picked on and I could feel Rosanne's pain when it happened to her. It touched me because I have lost my parents and her tribute to her father, and mother, brought back all of the good times and love I had with/for my own parents. It touched me because Rosanne, as I feel so many of us are but never put it into words so eloquently, is a survivor. I believe we all have guardian angels and Mirrored Images proves it to all who will listen. No one but angels could have saved her from bullies in junior high school, have looked over her until she found the perfect mate, and still guide her to this day in her writing craft. These are stories we should not only want to read, enjoy reading, but they are stories we all need to hear. I get a glimpse of the love and courage that Rosanne shows, and shares, in her magazine--and our most welcome online correspondence. Rosanne is writing a continuation of Mirrored Images titled Escape and Redemption. I can't wait to read that! But first, my readers, you must read Mirrored Images.” --Barbara Deming; Author, Writing Instructor, Publisher, and Blogger.
***** “I read Rosanne Catalano’s book Mirrored Images and I love it!!! She had somewhat of a hard life in some areas and a good one in others. The author had a lot of heartache, with the loss of friends early in her life, and the ridicule and horrendous behaviors of other kids when she was in junior high school. Though it sounds like she had a most wonderful Dad and Grandmother too; her grandmother reminded me so much of my own Grandmother who passed away last year! I enjoyed very much reading all of her different short stories and the poems she included. I really loved reading about her little cheese episode in ‘Christmas with Grandma,’ and her little sneaky trek to the store thinking she could hurriedly fix what she had EATEN…LOL!!!! I LOVED IT--------- And I can still see Rosanne so clearly eating all of the 139 | The Cat’s Meow for Writers & Readers Magazine April-June 2016
cheese!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ROSANNE CATALANO all the way around! I will get her next book soon...I like this book’s title by the way, and the picture of Rosanne on the back cover; she looks so relaxed.” --Sandra L Hoynacki; Author, Poet and Retired-Nurse.
**** “Rosanne Catalano’s book, Mirrored Images, was a delightful read! I LOVED IT!!!! IF the abuse at school and all was about her, Rosanne has become a beautiful person and woman. I'm so glad she now has a wonderful spouse and her life is filled with love.” --Carol Dee Meeks; Writer and Poet.
Rosanne Catalano’s next book, Escape and Redemption, will be a continuation of Mirrored Images—which will start off where her last story “Bags to Riches” left off—only as a crime fiction novel rather than a collection of her poetry and short stories. She will be writing as “RC Kayla,” her pen name.
Escape & Redemption by RC Kayla Coming Soon!
