COMPS ARE WERE BACK...

It was busy down at the Bud post Wednesday 23 June - South lockdown 4.0 with plenty of events either Claude Ciastkowski (13) 68 Nett completed or close to completion..... When the gates reopened after the June lockdown, competition golf had to take a back seat for the first week and it was social play only (very frustrating for some). It was a sigh of relief when comps returned from everybody but the Golf Shop EFTPOS machine, which enjoyed the break probably the most of all. Fortunately the Hebb Trophy and Women's Matchplay snuck in as well as the Monthly and Midweek Medals. Unfortunately though the July lockdown has put a pause on the TW Maw Trophy and Handiskins Final. The following pages provide an update on the state of play of some events and the results of others when golf briefly returned.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE When wandering the hallways of the RCC Clubhouse, it's hard not to see a certain surname appear on almost every honour board or trophy.....Marchesani. For lifelong members, the Marchesani name is a familiar one, but for newer members, you may have heard it somewhere but can't quite recall where.... James Marchesani may be the first face you see when you hand over your comp fee in the Shop, but for those who aren't in the know, there's plenty to know......

STAFF PROFILE James Marchesani

How did you get into golf?

Being a member at RCC already, Dad was the sole reason for me taking up the game. Which naturally progressed from Tuesday/Thursday night junior clinics held by Betty Hebb with 20-30 other juniors including Matt and Travis Bolton, "Breaking Jordan Hampton, Andrew Schonewille through early and my brother Anthony. From there we all joined as members, in my Senior spent endless hours around the bottom chipping green and having year gave me putting comps for $2 Pepsis. Dad and his mates were more than happy for that extra me to play alongside them when I got belief I was my first handicap (30), which to this day is probably a big reason I good enough." continued to practice and play.

Who were your golfing inspirations growing up? It would be extremely hard not to include Tiger, he won just about every tournament he played in from 2000-08. EVERYBODY wanted to hit it like he did. The two others growing up were Aaron Baddeley and Peter Lonard. I was fortunate enough to meet both at a young age and then followed their careers. Aaron at one of his Junior tournaments in Queensland and Peter in a Heineken Classic Pro-Am where I was a caddy for the day.

When did you know you were good enough to go pro? I think from around the age of 16 turning professional was all I wanted to do. But the realisation did not hit me right up until my final year of college. Although I had played extremely good golf for my first 3 years at Oklahoma City University, I still had not been able to win. I finished 2nd so many times it was only a matter of time before I would get a win. Breaking through early in my Senior year gave me that extra belief I was good enough. I went on to win another 4 times that year winning the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award which jump-started my professional career.

STAFF PROFILE You’ve had some low rounds at Rosebud, which one sticks out from memory? The 62 (-10) I shot on the South course in 2016 with my coach Greg McConnell sticks out as clear as day. The round featured 2 eagles, 9 birdies, a bogey and a double. I turned in 30 (-6) not thinking much of it until I birdied 10, eagled 11 and birdied 12. Very quickly the magical number “59” was talked about. After lipping out for yet another birdie on 13, I made bogey from the right bunker on 14, following that up with a 3-putt double bogey from above the hole on 15 from about 6ft. Quickly waving goodbye to the elusive “59”, I then finished the round by birdieing the last 3 holes for 62, a round I will never forget! I have since shot two rounds of 61 (-10) on the North course. My lowest round is a 60 (-10) in Oklahoma at Lincoln Park East Course.

Favourite hole at RCC?

It is becoming harder and harder to pick a favourite hole at RCC with how quickly the course is developing. Certainly, you cannot pass up the stretch of holes 12-18 on the North.

Top 5 courses played, excluding Rosebud? The Old Course at St Andrews (Scotland), Carnoustie (Scotland), The Australian GC (Sydney), Oak Tree National (Oklahoma, USA) & Clearwater Bay (Hong Kong).

No. 1 course on your bucket list? Easily Augusta National.

Who would be in your ideal fourball (alive or deceased)? You just can't go past Tiger and Jack in their prime, Dad would round out my fourball.

I finished with a yearly rank of 14th across all collegiate divisions.

STAFF PROFILE You played collegiate golf in the USA, how competitive is it over there at that level?

Highly competitive. The Oklahoma City University was in the NAIA division which sat below NCAA Division I and II. The NJCAA division sat below the NAIA. The NCAA governs 1200 schools, and the NAIA looks after 300. Most golf programs will have close to 10 players on their roster at one time, so there would be anywhere between 10,00012,500 golfers in the collegiate system per year. My senior year at Oklahoma City I finished with a yearly rank of 14th across all collegiate divisions.

How has the events of 2020 and 2021 affected you and your peers? Like everybody the events of last year shocked the world and changed how we go about our life on a day to day basis, but explain how being in lockdown stopped you (like most people) from earning a living or even practicing? It's been extremely difficult. Not knowing when things will open back up and revert to “normal” has been tricky to navigate. In 2019 I played close to 28 events and a handful of major Pro-Ams and in 2020 I played just 3 events over a 3-week span. As courses were shut, we as professionals were not able to practice for most of the lockdowns last year, so that made it difficult to keep on top of my golf swing. I spent most of lockdown hitting balls into a net to keep my swing somewhat grooved! My tour card on the PGA Tour of China was cancelled, and there has not been a return date set for that tour yet. Some of the PGA Tour of Australia events returned in early 2021, but we lost all our major events in the AUS Open, AUS PGA, NZ Open and Victorian Open, which made it difficult to make a reasonable living from competing. The outlook for the new 2021/22 season isn’t looking great already as both NSW and Victoria head back into ‘snap lockdowns’ which will likely effect players travel again.

Has COVID changed what you have to do during a tournament (i.e. scoring, handling shared equipment etc)? It has certainly changed a few minor details, but nothing dramatic. It has also depended on which state we were playing in as each had their own set of COVID rules. Scoring is now completed via mobile phones, just like how we score during our club competitions. We still sit with the official scorer at the end of the round, confirm scores with our playing partners then submit via our phones. We were able to remove flagsticks and use rakes as there were volunteers on each hole with sanitary wipes cleaning flags/rakes as we completed each hole. SINCE 1962 | PAGE 10

STAFF PROFILE The Players Series showcased RCC and just how far the club has come recently. Can you give us some of your highlights from the week?

"

THE MARCHESANI FAMILY WITH GEOFF OGILVY AT THE TPS

"

TPS was a fantastic week not only as a competitor in the event but as a member of RCC. Quite a special week for us Marchesani’s, with 3 of us competing side by side and Dad on caddy duties. It may have been a first for 3 siblings to compete against each other in the same professional field/event. I certainly did not play as well as I would have liked, but it was great to be able to compete so close to home and have friends, family and RCC members out watching, gaining an insight and appreciation for what goes on during a tournament week.

It was great to be able to compete so close to home and have friends, family and RCC members out watching.

As a competitor everything ran quite smoothly (bar the weather Thursday and Friday). The course was in fantastic shape and held up great over the 4 days. Personally, I really enjoyed the mixed format including lady professionals along with the country’s top boy and girl juniors on the weekend. As a member I could not have been prouder of the Club and could not wait to show off the course and facilities to my colleagues. I received nothing but high praise for how the course was presented. The event really has put the Club back on the map and it is something our members should be extremely proud of! I would personally like to thank and congratulate Danny McGrath, Ross Heinrich and the Board, Ian Todd and his staff, Heath Whittaker, the Golf Shop staff, Hospitality staff and volunteers for all of their work leading into the event and the week itself. Events that size are not easy to run, especially as it was a first for the Club in an awfully long time. I look forward to the event growing in years to come, along with the stature of RCC!

What do you see as the biggest technological advancement that helps separate the pros from the rest? I think as technology has advanced the athlete has adapted. We are starting to see a lot more male professionals over the height of 6 foot that are “golf fit” and swinging the club faster than ever before. The perfect example in the last 12 months is Bryson DeChambeau. He went from clubhead speeds of around 117mph (already a few mph faster than tour average) to up around 130mph. Every mph you can add gains roughly 2/3 yards of distance. In saying that, the general golfing public now has so much access to club fitting facilities, that there is no reason why they cannot get the maximum out of their equipment too. It is so important that your equipment fits your swing as it can affect shot shape, spin rates and most important carry and total distance. Luckily, for our members Matt Bolton has the facilities and all the technology to start this fitting process. So, when looking to buy your next set of clubs, whether it be a driver, or your next set of irons make sure you get fitted for them!

Finally, why did you cut the mullet? I really don't know and I regret it every day! If lockdown goes on any longer I'll just grow another one, give the people what they want!

Hybrid Bump & Run by Matt Bolton

important that we have the ability to adapt to varying situations AwhensoutGolferson theit’sGolfextremely Course. Prior to lockdown we had an influx of Golfer’s wanting a lesson on Chipping. This could well be a result of the change in seasons. With a change in seasons comes a change in turf conditions. Lies are becoming thinner and chipping is becoming harder. Below is a tip to help you with your chipping through the Winter months where turf conditions can make a traditional chip shot very difficult. Why would I use a Hybrid and not my Putter?

A typical Putter has between 3* and 3.5* of loft which is perfect for short cut surfaces like the Putting Surface (Green). Putting from the fringe of the Green can be extremely inconsistent, this is because the Putter doesn’t have enough loft to facilitate the launch needed to get the ball through the fringe efficiently.

So, What Hybrid do I use?

This is where our Hybrid comes into play. A typical 3 or 4 Hybrid will have somewhere between 19* and 23* of loft. This extra loft along with a hotter club face will allow you to execute your shots a lot more consistently off the tighter lies that we’re presented with during the Winter Months.

How do I play the Hybrid Bump & Run?

"

Take a Chipping Setup Putting from 1.Feet close together (Approximately one clubhead width apart) the fringe of 2.Take normal Grip (Grip down the Club / Hands on the lower half of the Grip) the Green can 3.Central ball position Make a Putting Stroke be extremely This simple tip will allow you to make better decisions resulting in better scores. inconsistent Stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all post lockdown for a tune up.
