COURSE REPORT - NOVEMBER 2021

Ian Todd

MASTERPLAN WORKS It’s been a very busy time on the courses with the commencement of Masterplan works to the 1st, 2nd and 9th North holes. Construction works began on Tuesday the 5th October with OCM and Jason McCarthy, the company’s construction and shaping expert installing two fairway bunkers on the 1st. Without doubt the results, even at this early stage, has provided an impressive opening tee shot in stark contrast to what was once a bland opening hole. In time, this hole will “set the scene” of great anticipation for the remainder of the round. Following on from the first bunkers, works proceeded to the right of the fairway levelling a section of rough to become a rear Tournament tee for the 2nd hole. The lengthening of this hole will better test the elite players with around 60 metres added to the drive. It is hoped with the extra length that most players won’t be able to drive this green as was the case during this year’s tournament. This tee may eventually be brought into regular play for Club members, but that decision will be for another day. After the tee was levelled the existing fairway bunkers on the right of the 9th were filled in and the area was re-contoured, and the area will become fairway, in due course. Construction of a new bunker on the left was installed with much better shape and contouring.

The greatest change in this current round of works has seen quite a transformation around the 2nd green. Initially, the 9th tee was lowered a little and broadened towards the 8th green allowing for much needed, additional teeing area. A large and dramatic bunker was placed under the tee on the left of the 2nd fairway replacing an “awkward to maintain” rough area. The green-side bunkers have also been altered to reflect a new style of bunkering that will eventually filter through the remainder of the course after future Master Plan works. The left-hand side of the green works much better with more fine turf allowing greater access for traffic to the 3rd tees and the short grass will also link into the new 9th tee.

The positioning of the new bunker is ideally situated for the strategy of the tee shot and the way the hole is shaped. LHS 2 North Green PAGE 1

Hydroseeding around the back sides of the bunkers have been completed and finer contouring and re-turfing are currently being finished by the staff. Once this has been completed the grow-in phase will commence which is critical to a successful out-come. The staff have worked very hard over the last two weeks to finalise all the areas to a high degree of quality and in a timely manner. 2 North Back Tee

Bunker styles play such an important role in the “look and feel” of a golf course and only the best and most serious of golf clubs have this aspect of quality. The transformation of all these areas has been a stark contrast to the previous versions and has set the tone for future works which will no doubt help the North course at Rosebud achieve its’ vast potential. There has also been some associated works that always happens with re-constructions. Repositioning of irrigation, including main-lines, cabling, sprinklers and even drinking water lines have been undertaken.

Please respect these new areas when playing until the grow-in has been completed in around 6 weeks. Try not to go into or onto the roped off areas but, if absolutely necessary, walk carefully. Ian Todd Course Superintendent
