IN LATE AUGUST 1619, A SHIP ARRIVED IN THE BRITISH COLONY OF VIRGINIA BEARING A CARGO OF TWENTY TO THIRTY ENSLAVED PEOPLE FROM AFRICA. THEIR ARRIVAL LED TO THE BARBARIC AND UNPRECEDENTED SYSTEM OF AMERICAN CHATTEL SLAVERY THAT WOULD LAST FOR THE NEXT 250 YEARS. THIS IS SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS THE COUNTRY'S ORIGINAL SIN, BUT IT IS MORE THAN THAT: IT IS THE SOURCE OF SO MUCH THAT STILL DEFINES THE UNITED STATES. THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE'S AWARD WINNING "1619 PROJECT" ISSUE REFRAMED OUR UNDERSTANDING OF AMERICAN HISTORY BY PLACING SLAVERY AND ITS CONTINUING LEGACY AT THE CENTER OF OUR NATIONAL NARRATIVE. THIS NEW BOOK SUBSTANTIALLY EXPANDS ON THAT WORK, WEAVING TOGETHER EIGHTEEN ESSAYS THAT EXPLORE THE LEGACY OF SLAVERY IN PRESENT DAY AMERICA WITH THIRTY SIX POEMS AND WORKS OF FICTION THAT ILLUMINATE KEY MOMENTS OF OPPRESSION, STRUGGLE, AND RESISTANCE. THE ESSAYS SHOW HOW THE INHERITANCE OF 1619 REACHES INTO EVERY PART OF CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN SOCIETY, FROM POLITICS, TRAFFIC, AND CITIZENSHIP TO CAPITALISM, RELIGION, AND OUR DEMOCRACY ITSELF.

GAIL BISHOP (REGINA HALL) IS THE NEW “MASTER”, THE FIRST BLACK MASTER OF THE UNIVERSITY, AN INITIATIVE WAS TAKEN BY THE UNIVERSITY TO PROMOTE DIVERSIFICATION TO UPHOLD THE MARK OF PRESTIGE AND STOP THE IMPLICIT BIAS OF DISCRIMINATION. Three years later, she started to build her first kit aircraft. By 2008, it was considered airworthy. She was given academic freedom when in 2014 her and her colleagues discovered the “spin memory effect”, which may be able to detect/verify the net of effects of gravitational waves. Under that academic freedom, Gonzalez Pasterski also published her findings of the Pasterski-Strominger-Zhiboedov Triangle in Electromagnetic Memory in a 2015 individual paper. Stephen Hawking later cited her paper in 2016, while George Takei recognized her work on social media.
These days, Gonzalez Pasterski, who studies black holes and spacetime, particularly trying to explain gravity within the context of quantum mechanics, has been cited by the likes of Stephen Hawking and Andrew Strominger, been offered jobs by NASA and Blue Origin, an aerospace research and development company Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos also started. She’s also received hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to support her work.
Gonzalez Pasterski’s involvement with the Let Girls Learn initiative has been recognized both domestically and internationally, ranging from White House invitations and published features to the Annenberg Foundation for her work in Cuba to the U.S Embassy in Moscow and Moscow Polytech.
SABRINA PASTERSKI SABRINA GONZÁLEZ PASTERSKI
Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is a Cuban-American physicist, who completed her undergraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and is currently pursuing her Ph.D degree in high energy physics at Harvard University, under Andrew Strominger.
At just 24 years old, the physicist has a résumé that even veterans of her field can’t match. Gonzalez Pasterski, who’s a doctoral student at the ivy league studying high energy physics, started showing signs that she’d break barriers in 2003, back when the then-10-year-old started taking flying lessons.

Native to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rey Blaylock has served as the Student Engagement Program Coordinator for the Center for Diversity and Inclusion since March 2020. Rey is a devoted Green Bay Packers fan, and lover of squirrels and all of nature's fur babies. She graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor’s in Social Work (2017), a minor in Psychology, and a Master’s in Student Affairs and Higher Education (2019). Her academic aspiration is to accomplish her Doctorate by 2025. She is planning to pursue her Doctorate in Philosophy & Sacred Theology. A proud activist & liberator for human and social justice rights, Ms. Rey Blaylock has dedicated her life to empowering diverse students through mindful and dedicated mentorship, encouragement of BIPOC groups to incorporate and retain healthy self-care practices. She is most excited about providing continuing professional and personalized support to the Identity-Affinity orgs and the Rose-Hulman campus community..
